merzîye ferîqî [1958 - 18 sept. 2005] was a kurdish singer from marîwan, eastern kurdistan. throughout her life, she was a singer, a mother, and a peshmerga with komala. she was the wife of peshmerga and singer nasir rezazî. she died unexpectedly after complications due to surgery in sweden. she has a daughter, diłnîya rezazî, and sister, leîla ferîqî, who are also famous singers.

this song is based off a poem written by a kurdish man imprisoned by ba’athi forces. it’s about the man’s 6 young children that he was forced to abandon. he remained in jail for many years and never found what happened to them. he wrote this poem while in prison to stay sane and called his 6 children ‘butterflies’. it became so popular and a symbol of kurdish resistance that singers turned it into a song.
