The crows caw and cry to the critics of the sky; darkness preaching their prehistoric sermons of candor and valor to the burning edge of the sun.

Lucie couldn't help but think that the feathered fiends were merely Lucifer's spies in disguise.

One crow, largely feathered and more worse with wear, sat stiffly on Nate's shoulder. The bird was eagerly watching Lucie with a single beady eye.

Nate was satisfied; forgetting and he stood in the shadows of the trees. He was soaked in the leafy canopy and his eyes were slits as he stared atJesse.

Nate's vicious smile was a story of cruelty and pain; threats and promises screamed into the maddening night.

Lucie shivered imaging all the terrible things that could happen to her and Jesse.

Her first instinct was to bolt by herself after Belial took off in a dramatic spark and smoke. To her credit, she tried and tried again.

Nate managed to be faster with the crows cowardly obeying his careful commands. The birds were circling and calling out her direction to him.

Lucie screeched and cried out when Nate's grotesque skeletal hand aburptly grabbed her from behind. Lucie blinked, struggling as bones in fingers cracked under pressure. He grinned as he held her up by the throat.

Without warning, he swung her around and flung her hard against the bark of a tree as if she were nothing more than a sheet on the wind.

Nate did this twice to Lucie.

She was knocked unconscious the last time and when she woke up, her lip was bleeding slightly and Jesse was beside her.

Lucie's head aches and her wrist is twisted at an awkward angle.

Now, she squints into the darkness under the canopy of leaves and scowls. "No wonder no one ever speaks of him. He's awful."

Jesse frowns, cradling her tender arm in his long, pianist hands as he studies and steadies the shape of her shaking fingers. Lucie sits abnormally still beside him on the grass. Tears are already stinging her eyes he gently moves her clearly broken fingers.

"Do you have your stele?" Jesse asks, his eyes moving to study the painfully awkward angle her hand is bent. He looks dubious that the stele could straighten the bones.

Lucie shakes her head sadly, and Jesse glances up to watch her loose curls bounce on her bare and freckled shoulders. "Belial took it."

"I could try to make a sling," Jesse offers, his eyes shifting to meet hers. It takes Lucie a long minute to figure out he is serious. His hand lingers on her skin; delicately long fingers are comfortingly warm on Lucie's arm. "It would hurt less."

Lucie nods, unsure of anything but the need to kiss him. "Alright."

While Jesse pulls off his white shirt, Lucie Herondale looks away and blushes.

Her eyes scan the area, searching out escape route possibilities as a distraction to the closeness of the moment. She needs an easy out and with Nate watching her, she can't be sure it is possible.

She frowns, pulling her knees to her chest as Jesse rips a long strip off the bottom of his shirt. He leans towards and then over her, the long strip of fabric twisted in his hands. Lucie tries not to look like she's dreamy and she struggles to breathe as his face comes within inches of hers. He smells of cold pine and pancakes on late winter mornings; two scents Lucie momentarily finds inextricably intoxicating.

Instinctively, she closes her eyes and puts her good hand on his chest. Lucie smiles as she leans up, into and inviting Jesse.

Jesse says her name like a practiced prayer as he closes his eyes. His hands drop the fabric and slide around her waist as her lips brush the soft skin on his mouth.
