The Mass Effect series was originally released to widespread acclaim, with praise heaped on its story of intergalactic war and survival against all odds. However, Mass Effect also tells a story about human colonisation and expansion across the galaxy – a far more complex and fraught topic. (…) It’s important to note that Mass Effect’s whole narrative discussion of colonisation is explored through a colonial lens – and one that represents the act with positivity. For players that do not treat the idea of colonisation with kindness, this narrative can be distinctly alienating.
Aside from Ashley, people were also noticing how dated the dialogue and story felt by today’s standards, and just how problematic it had been. (…) She’s an incredibly uncomfortable character whose views represent most of the human colonists that are expanding their reach through the galaxy. In some respect, it makes the option of leaving her out of your story so much more meaningful – but that decision also comes with its own issues. (…) But where the portrayal of each side differs is in how the aliens are depicted: as the problem. (…) For me, in exploring and saving these human colonists I began to wonder: ‘Are these the people I really want to save?’ For the most part, the answer was ‘no’. (…) Playing Mass Effect years later, I’m irritated with how this series constantly wants you to go along with the actions and dialogue of racist, xenophobic behaviour in order to mine depth and meaning from the plot. The game keeps illustrating the expansion of the human colonies across the galaxy as a good thing, despite those human colonies being filled with racists who want Aliens dead. It makes it hard to root for the humanity portrayed in Mass Effect to survive. I feel as though Mass Effect would have a far more interesting story to tell if we were anything but human. Though it does dabble in the ideas, Mass Effect as a series struggles to portray any meaningful anti-colonialist, anti-expansion narrative, because it simply does not want to. Mass Effect champions a colonial struggle against the threats of an expansive galaxy, and in returning to the game, I realise just how little room there is in this story to find myself and my values.
—Mass Effect’s colonisation narrative isn’t pretty, ten years later by Nich Richie, GamesHub.com (8 Nov 2022)

from velcro to bunny ears — carmen berzatto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
warnings : mentions of emotional neglect ?? distant relationship from siblings. not an x reader.
a/n: i wrote this in 20 minutes please excuse me if there are any typos..
I have a feeling Carmen always had trouble with the milestones other kids his aged reached.
Mental math, riding a bike—it all came to him much slower than he was ever comfortably able to admit. Kind, but not smart. Polite, but not friendly. Creative, but not handsome. Imaginative, but not funny.
He's been this way for as long as he can remember, occasional dabbles in art and his passion for culinary being the only part of himself he could be sure would be seen as the best of the best, even if he didn't truly believe he was quite at the epitome of perfection.
Shoelaces.
Fuck, were those the bane of his existence at just 7 years old. Stupid Velcro that made a tearing sound that was similar to a bloodcurdling scream.
He'd been wearing shoes with Velcro strips, or short laces that purposefully looked tucked and didn't require tying, since he could walk.
Jesus. Carmen never even learned how to tie them. Asking anyone, even his mother, was simply too much to ask. Instead, he would insist that Velcro shoes were okay, and he wasn't too old for them.
Until Uncle Jimmy came to visit during the summer of 1998.
Mikey, barely 16, was out with friends for the weekend, possibly getting drunk on beaches and rolling joints on the roofs of parking garages. And 11 year old Natalie was celebrating her classmate, Ashley's, 12th birthday. Rollerblade hockey was the new craze. Why wait for mucky fishponds and vast lakes to solidify and freeze over in the dead of winter when you could just go across the street and bust your ass on the concrete instead?
It wasn't necessarily Carmen's idea. Cicero, being the overbearing babysitter he'd become due to Donna's negligence, couldn't handle seeing his poor little nephew cooped up in the tiny upstairs bedroom riddled with hand drawn artworks plastered on his walls. It wasn't right. Summer was for bruises and scabs that would be forgotten about with the booming sound of fireworks and taste of sugary popsicles dripping down your arms.
"Why don't you go hang out with the kids across the street, Bear?" Cicero asked him. Carmen picked his little head up from his sketch book and looked out the view of his window.
He only shrugged.
"They're playin' rollerblade hockey. Your brother Mikey fuckin' loved that, y'know? When he was your age, I mean. Give it a shot, eh? Might be nice kids."
The Raymondville's. Carmen didn't know much about that family. He didn't know they were nice, or played rollerblade hockey like his older, therefore much cooler, big brother. All he knew was that they were also older, therefore much cooler than him too.
That's all that mattered anyway. But he had this tendency to follow in his brothers footsteps. With Jimmy's rare visits and Donna's unpredictable and equally scarce moments of wanting to be an actual tender and caring mother, Mikey was the closest thing to a reliable adult he ever had. Natalie was too busy spending every moment she could out of the house until she'd come crawling back to Mom, who would only scold her for ever wanting to leave in the first place, to notice how perfectly Carmen blended into the wallpaper.
A happy house.
Rollerblade hockey sounds fine.
After a dig through the attic and rummaging through a box of old sports equipment—low and behold lied the skates. Black and turquoise. Mikey's favorite colors. The 4 wheelers were a little intimidating, but Carmen faintly remembered spending a week with Aunt Lisa and learning how to at least stroll down the sidewalk of his cousins neighborhood.
"Go on," Cicero gave a gentle push to Carmen's small and trembling shoulders, leaning back on the front porch to carefully watch his nephew try and be an active member of society from a distance. His little blonde curls blew in the evening wind, the humidity from earlier in the day still weighing them down. His hands shook vigorously which were tightly gripping a pair of Mikey's old rollerskates.
A jumble of "hi's, my name is," and "can i play's," fell out of his quiet mouth. They were met with nods from the 5 boys, easily ages 9-12, the oldest being 13. But this was only after shared glances and shrugs of discomfort were shown. The Raymondville's had never seen this fragile little kid in their lives: short and skinny. But they knew the Berzatto's. They knew cool Mikey and pretty Natalie—but not average Carmen. A breath of relief washed over Carmy, and he sat down on the fluffy and bright green grass to remove his white lace-less sneakers and shoved his feet into the slightly too big skates.
The straps snapped down easily. But those damned laces, thick and white with little black stitching, taunted him. He swallowed.
Carmen simply tucked them in, his stomach queasy at the feeling of the plastic aglet's poking his feet.
He stumbled a bit, but he secured himself as he remembered to bend his knees just a bit. It wasn't all too different from skating on the ice in mid-January. Except now it was mid-June, and every wheel could easily catch itself in the bumps and cracks of the old streets of the neighborhood that hadn't been patched in years. But alas, the laces came loose, and one had caught right in the metal bolt of the wheel and zipped right around it, knocking little Carmy off his feet and onto his bum.
Tears immediately pricked at his waterlogged eyes when he looked around just to see everyone had already started the 5th game of the day without him.
Uncle Jimmy simply sighed and beckoned his hand toward himself, shaking his head in pity rather than surprise. Carmen's shoulders shook with silent sobs as he held his skates in one skinny arm and his sneakers in the other. He couldn't even wipe the snot that pooled from his nose or the consistent tears that streamed down his cheeks and soaked his t-shirt.
"Jesus," Cicero swore under his breath, leaning forward "Nobody ever teach you how to tie your shoes, Carm?" he raised a brow, carefully taking his nephews Velcro shoes and setting them down on the porch beside him. At 7 years old, with a one sibling being 12 and the other being nearly 16, one would expect he could tie his own shoes. He couldn't tell which question was greater: how he hadn't learned through observation, or why he never just asked?
"N—no," Carmen hiccuped, wiping his eyes and taking a seat down beside his uncle. He carefully watched as Cicero went through step by step instructions of the 'bunny ear' method. The little boy was mesmerized by the simplicity of the loop Cicero wrapped around his thumb, pulling it into a tight and secure bow in such quick timing. He never forgot after that day.
Sometimes he still mumbles "wrap around the coop, push through the loop," as he ties the laces of his white Nike Cortez sneakers before going on his 3rd soul searching and ultimate sensory seeking 15 minute walk of the week.
"Bunny ears," Uncle Jimmy said to Carmy.
And 'bunny ears' he did.

Ashly Burch’s Contribution to LGBTQ+ Representation
Tumblr media
Four of Ashly Burch's roles, all of which are canon LGBTQ characters
Recently, Ashly Burch, a well-recognized voice actress, singer, and writer, came out as pan and queer. Taking into account this development, I decided to examine some of her past roles and offer my thoughts on her contributions.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Feb. 11, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-eighth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on July 30, 2022.
On July 1st, Ashly Burch came out as pan and queer, saying she is "old fashioned pansexuals". She added that this is not a shock because half the characters she plays are "members of the rainbow fam" and added more in a longer thread.
Burch has added herself to the list of other LGBTQ+ voice actors who have voiced LGBTQ+ characters in media. There's Anna Akana, a bisexual actress of Japanese and Filipino descent. She recently voiced Sasha Waybright in Amphibia and Daisy in Magical Girl Friendship Squad. Both characters are bisexual.
A non-binary actor, Iris Menas, has voiced non-binary characters in various Disney series. Ian-Jones Quartey, a bisexual creator, has voiced various characters, including Radicles "Rad" in his series, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. Abbi Jacobson, a bisexual actress, voiced a bisexual princess named Bean in Disenchantment. She also voiced a lesbian woman named Katie Mitchell in The Mitchells Vs. the Machines.
In many ways, Burch is definitely a queer icon. Apart from her video game voice roles, live-action roles, commercial roles, and dubbing roles, there are five roles that stand out to me. This article focuses on those roles and their significance in LGBTQ+ representation.
Ash in Hey Ash Whatcha Playin'
Tumblr media
Ashly with her beauties in Season 1 - Finale Part 1 of Hey Ash Whatcha Playin'
In May 2008, the series Hey Ash Whatcha Playin' first premiered on Destructoid. It would garner tens of millions of views. The series used surreal humor and sibling rivalry with her brother Anthony. Each episode focused on video games, and their themes, trends, and societal impacts. In 2011, the series began airing on YouTube. Papa Burch, Burch's actual father, and Ashley "Leigh" Davis, who becomes Anthony's girlfriend, also appear. Guest stars include Burch's mother and many others.
Many episodes had queer themes. One implies that Burch had sex with sex workers. In another, she says things can be "really gay" when everything becomes male genitalia. The icing on the cake was when she struggled with the homophobia exhibited by Orson Scott Card, whose ideas inspired the game, Shadow Complex.
In the show's second season, Anthony had gay sex through a message board. Ashly asked her dad for help with "lady problems" (i.e. liking a lot of women). Some episodes had Ashly joking about how brains are "gay" and defending her brother as a person who doesn't bash gay people. Others included dildos, Papa Burch coming up with imagined gay scenarios, or defense of female characters.
One episode stands out from the lot, the one where Ashly says she likes pretty girls and runs away when she sees a girl she likes. Later episodes have Ash loving a female villain-of-sorts or portray her losing her cool when people use the word "lesbians".
Enid in OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes
Tumblr media
Enid (left) and Red Action (right) in an episode of OK K.O.!
Burch is known for her role as Enid Mettle in this action-adventure-comedy animated series by Ian Jones-Quartey, Rebecca Sugar's husband. In the series, Enid is a bisexual woman previously in a relationship with Radicles "Rad". She is later Red Action's girlfriend.
Enid has a key role in OK K.O.! as a witch and a ninja all in one. She also fights villains and works at Gar's Bodega. Burch has voiced Enid in almost all her appearances apart from the original pilot. She has been the subject of much fan art and over 700 fan fics.
Somewhat like Enid is Lainey in Loud House, who Burch also voiced. Lainey is dating another character, a woman named Alice. Unlike OK K.O.!, Lainey only appears in two episodes. In the former series, she becomes very romantic with Red Action, a lesbian character voiced by actress, comedian, and model Kali Hawk.
Ash in Final Space
Tumblr media
Evra (left) and Ash (right) in an episode of Final Space
Burch is less known for her role as Ash Graven, who has the same first name as her. In the series, Ash is a humanoid alien who strikes up a romance with Evra (Jasmin Savoy Brown), a genderless being, in the Season 3 episode "Forgiveness". They sit together in a romantic moment, watching lights that resemble the aurora borealis.
Before this, she says she hates a man named Jordan Hammerstein with all her guts. This hints that she is a lesbian rather than  "ambiguously bi," as I noted in my review of the series. In that review, I noted a podcast where show creator Olan Rogers confirmed Ash as an LGBTQ character. At the time, Rogers said he would expand the relationship between Evra and Ash if he had another season.
Ash is only one of the many LGBTQ characters in the series, although the others are recurring characters rather than protagonists. Unlike Enid, she becomes an antagonist, and villain, akin to Cassandra "Cass" (Eden Espinosa) in Tangled. She is a character as complex as Cass while both are exploited by someone else who plays on her trauma triggers.
Rutile Twins in Steven Universe
Tumblr media
Rutile Twins (right) brings Lars and Steven to the Prime Kindergarten where Off Colors are hiding out in their debut episode.
In a little-known role, Burch voiced a non-binary Gem fusion named Rutile Twins in Steven Universe. She later said she was "extremely honored" to be on the show. Unlike the other characters she voiced, these characters are non-binary women, as are all Gems as Rebecca Sugar confirmed in a 2018 article. So that makes this character unique beyond any others mentioned in her resume.
In an interesting trivia, since Burch voices both components of the character, they have the same voice, but with different tones. The same is the case for the Amethysts, all voiced by Michaela Dietz, or all the Rubies voiced by Charlyne Yi. Real-life rutiles are said to help with the stabilization of emotions and relationships. They reportedly evoke romantic feelings and aid with handling past trauma.
The Rutile Twins are outcasts who are part of a group of Gems ostracized by society, the Off Colors. These Twins later join Lars Barriga, and the other Off Colors, traveling through space, and living on Earth. In Steven Universe Future, the Off Colors graduate from Steven's school for Gems, known as Little Homeschool.
Molly in The Ghost and Molly McGee
Tumblr media
Andrea (left) and Molly (right) in the "Andrea Song Takeover"
Burch voices a lead character named Molly McGee. Unlike her other roles, Molly is half-Thai and half-Irish, like Burch in real life. The series incorporates Thai culture into storylines and helps educate viewers about Thai culture.
In The Ghost and Molly McGee, Molly befriends a ghost named Scratch after moving to the Midwestern town of Brighton with her father, mother, and brother. Also appearing in the series is Molly's grandmother. She meets many friends there. This includes a Latine and Jewish girl named Libby Stein-Torres (Lara Jill Miller). She also has a geeky friend Sheela (Aparna Nancherla) and a sweet pink-haired friend, Kat (Eden Riegel).
Although Molly is not a canon queer character, some fans have shipped her with her frenemy, Andrea Davenport (Jules Medcraft), with their ship being Mollandrea. Others have shipped her with Libby Stein-Torres, with their ship called Mollibby. This ship has been denied by Bob Roth, a show creator, who said that LGBTQ representation unfolds naturally in the series.
Closing thoughts
There are many other characters Burch has voiced or played since her career began in 2007. She voiced Josette Grey in Blackford Manor and Tiny Ghost in Chainsaw Richard. She offered her voice as Lila Twinklepipes in Pig Goat Banana Cricket, Meadow Springs in Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, and Miss Pauling in Expiration Date, along with others in Over the Garden Wall and We Bare Bears.
She is further known for voicing Bun Bun and Breezy in Adventure Time, Ridley in Glitch Techs, and Cass Wizard in Bee and PuppyCat. Recently, she played Rachel in Mythic Quest who is in a relationship with a Black woman named Dana (Imani Hakim).
Many of these roles aren't canon LGBTQ+ characters. However, since Burch came out as pan and queer, this could lead to new interpretations of these characters. Burch was also a writer for "Shadows at the Gates", the fourth episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, a mature animated series filled with LGBTQ+ characters and based on the Critical Role podcast.
In the end, Ashly Burch will likely continue to voice queer characters, working with other such actors to continue improving queer representation in media.

when I started playing hp again I decided to randomly generate colors and phenotypes for my horses since I’ve always enjoyed playing around with horse genetics. when I bred them I paired up their genetics and counted the possible color outcomes, then generated a random number to see what color baby they’d get. now that I’m two generations deep, I thought I’d do a little visual graphic on what I’ve gotten so far from my main stable stud and his three girlfriends (you should be able to click on these to see them a bit larger)

Ashley Best: ‘I Can’t Let It Go’
Tumblr media
He says ‘Giddy Up’ a lot, probably too much sometimes and not enough at others. His name is Ashley Best, and he’s always wanted to live up to his surname by becoming a country music singer/songwriter talented enough to play the Grand Ole Opry, but that has yet to happen. He’s not been discovered. He and his bride, Tennile, still live Cadiz, Ohio, and Ashley works at the local feed store. And Ashley works hard, and he has for a very long time. “I’ve gone back and forth with it, I really have,” he said. “I know it and I do love it. But I want to be on stage. That’s what I really want.” In fact, this is what appears on ashleybestcountrymusic.com: “Ashley Best, son of a Coalminer, the last of 4 children and raised on the top of a hill above the very small town of Little York in Ohio. He was raised there until the age of 14, where he enjoyed fishing in strip ponds surrounding the region and watching local farmers farm the land. He grew up listening to the country radio station that his mother played while cooking, baking and washing dishes. At age 14 he moved with his family to Cadiz, Ohio, onto what would become their family farm.” That’s why, most weekends of every year for a few decades now, Best has grabbed his guitar to perform live on a stage, in a bar, and even on local radio. “I think, deep down, I have always wanted to make it as a country music star,” Best admitted. “When I was 16, I used to stand in front of my bedroom window, and I would see my silhouette just like the ones Dwight Yoakam used to make. I thought if I could do that, and learn every Dwight Yoakam song I could, and try to be him, I would make it. Now I know that was a mistake, but it didn’t seem like it at the time. “I realized it was a mistake when I went to Star Lake to see him perform. I looked around and I realized right then that no one else at that show thought the same about him. It hit me then that I didn’t really want to be him. Maybe like him a bit, but not the way I was going about it,” he said. “That’s when I was more concerned about being me, and that translated into my songwriting, too.” Ashley Best & The Set Em' Band will perform at the Bridge Music Bar in Pittsburgh on Friday, March 31. “Oh you'll never gonna turn on the radio, Hear my songs on a countdown show This I, I know but still I can't let it go, no I can't let it go …” That’s the chorus of a song Best wrote called “I Can’t Let It Go,” and yes, it pertains to his music and to the lack of a superstar career. And of course, he knows the Brad Paisley story. He knows it well. It’s just he wanted his own fairy tale to come true, too. “I can’t lie – I still dream of being up on that stage in front of thousands of fans,” he said. “That’s what my song, ‘I Can’t Let It Go’ is all about. That’s my reality. “I know I’ll probably never get on the Grand Ole Opry and achieve some of the big goals I’ve set for myself. I know I’m never going to be a household name, but I can’t let it go. I just keep chasing it. It’s what I want to do.” Best only performs his own songs, and he works with local musicians like Bob Mizell. Some nights he plays solo, and other evenings he rallies his Set ‘Em Band to play venues like the Monroe Theatre in Woodsfield or the El Gran Patron Restaurant in Moundsville. “I believe my songwriting is star worthy, I really do. I believe my songs tell stories like no one else,” Best explained. “My songs are good. 100 percent. They make for good music, but do I want to hear someone else singing my songs? No, I don’t. I want to be the one singing my songs because that very first time I stepped up on a stage, I knew that’s where I belonged.” Best is employed full-time and works on his family farm, too. But these days, he sings his truth: “I look in the mirror I only age, Slowly slippin' is the Opry stage, I tell myself it's gonna be alright, at least I'm out here playin' tonight …” “I don’t seek that success for the money in the sense of becoming a superstar with all the money in the world,” Best said. “It’s not about fame and fortune. What I seek is making a living at it, and that’s why me and the guys in the Set ‘Em Band have worked our tails off to become as good as we can get. That I know for sure. “So, it’s not about limos and gold records, but it is about success, if that makes any sense,” he said. “I guess we just want what we think we deserve. But I’ll tell ya this … when I’m out there singing, I’m giving it my soul.” Read the full article

Side note i think i lost a few followers for not knowing who Ashley Tisdale is and that is fucking hilarious. Y'all said I can't follow anyone who doesn't remember the name of a child star from a movie and some shows you never watched
