The Sonic Dreem Teem
To start off the blog is probably one of the series Wave Master is best known for - Sonic. We’ll be profiling the 5 people who have been most instrumental in developing and enriching the music of the series from the Dreamcast onward.
PART 1: Jun Senoue
Tumblr media
Probably the most famous musician working for Sega and the one most people think of when they think of Sonic music. Jun joined Sega in 1993 and is one of their longest-running inhouse musicians. He has a self-admitted reputation as a rockstar thanks to his side work as the guitarist of Crush 40, his prominent status within Sega, and the solo albums he’s released that collect his work (aptly named “The Works”).
Jun’s specialty is as a guitarist. His distinct style of modernized classic rock was codified by his work on Sonic Adventure 2, and is instantly recognizable. He plays with a variety of different subgenres of rock, including industrial, heavy metal, ska punk, thrash, fusion, acoustic, and symphonic. However, thanks to his joining Sega during the Genesis era, Jun also has an apt skill in synthesized music more inline with the traditional Sega sound.
Contrary to popular belief, his role in Sonic 3 and Knuckles was relatively minimal, only composing bonus stage themes and jingles (most notably, one any fan of the series should know), but he first got to really show his stuff in the Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island, before securing his status as sound director for the hedgehog’s 3D debut, Sonic Adventure; working together with Kenichi Tokoi and Fumie Kumatani to bring the series to a new age and a new sound.
Jun moved to San Francisco to join Sega Studio USA in 2000, where he served as lead composer for Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic Adventure 2. After Sonic Team Japan took back the reigns in Sonic 2006, the geographical distance and general desire for a reboot in the series’s sound resulted in Jun stepping away as lead composer. During this time, he climbed the Sega ladder into more of a supervisory position, providing occasional new tracks, coordinating and recruiting the singers for vocal songs, and producing many of Sega’s album releases.
Following a restructure in 2008 which saw the closure of Sega Studio USA, Jun returned to Japan and since then has been much more actively in the compositional trenches. He’s returned to his duties as Sonic’s lead composer on special occasions, including Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic 4, Sonic Generations, and Team Sonic Racing, provided guest contributions to games like Puyo Puyo Champions and Super Smash Bros. Brawl+Ultimate (where he sealed Sonic’s epic entrance with a terrific performance of S3′s Angel Island Zone), and played live at several concerts both with Sega and with Crush 40. He assisted Tomoya Ohtani in recruiting singers around the world for Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll, and played guitar on his aptly-titled track with Skye Sweetnam, Lava Rock.
youtube
Jun’s soundtracks are marked heavily by his frequent collaborations with outside artists. A huge fan of a wide variety of rock and music artists, Senoue is  surprisingly well-connected to the music industry. Thanks to this and his fluent English, he is usually the one to contact and recruit the Sonic series’s wide variety of guest singers and composers, along with generally representing Sega. Senoue’s frequent collaborators include Tony Harnell, Ted Poley, Julien-K (and their side project Circuit Freq), Tee Lopes, Cash Cash, Bentley Jones/Lee Brotherton, TORIENA, Hyper Potions, and of course, Johnny Gioeli. He almost always plays guitar with his trusty bassist Takeshi Taneda by his side. Likewise, he often returns the favour by playing guitars on tracks by his fellow Sega composers. In 2005, Senoue released an album called “JxJ: READY!” featuring voice actress Junko Noda, and in 1998 made a very rare non-Sega album appearance as a guitarist on Super Robot Wars Vocal Collection 2, further showing his willingness to collaborate outside the box.
Notable quote:
I started playing piano and keyboard when I was 3-years-old. I kept playing them 'til 12, then stopped when I moved to Panama, and started playing bass under the influence of the band Duran Duran... I thought the bass player, John Taylor, looked cool.
Then I started playing guitar when I was in high school. The reason I changed from bass to guitar was simple -- I wanted to be the kid in the spotlight! [laughs] During that time, MTV was airing many rock band videos and that made me want to be a rock star. I played in many bands when I was in high school and during my college days. Then... I don't remember the exact reason, but I started writing songs for console games at Sega in 1993. I just wanted to find some work where I could use my music talents, so I joined Sega and now making music is my full-time job!
Notable games worked on:
Main/Lead composer: Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island, NASCAR ARCADE, Sonic Adventure series, Pro Yakyuu Baseball series, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (Episode 1 and 2), Team Sonic Racing
Additional composer: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dark Wizard, Metal Head, Daytona USA Circuit Edition, Sega Rally 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Angel Island Zone), Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, Puyo Puyo Champions, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Mega Man 4 Medley)
Guest musician: Burning Rangers (guitar on Burning Ship), Super Robot Wars: Vocal Collection 2 (guitarist), NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (guitarist), OutRun: 20th Anniversary Album, Sonic Unleashed (guitarist on Super Sonic VS Perfect Dark Gaia), Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll (guitar on Lava Rock), Chain Chronicle (guitarist for Chain Band), Sonic Forces (guitar on Infinite’s Theme and Eggman’s Facility), Sonic Mania Plus (guitar on Time Trials Plus)
Tumblr media
Personal Thoughts:
Hard rock isn’t actually my favourite genre of music, but Senoue is someone I personally admire for his attitude, his knowledge and respect for his own inpirations, and love of teamwork and collaboration. Although he’s often easily pigeonholed, his music is a lot more diverse than he’s often given credit for, and the deep, rich grooves of his music are simply phenomenal. That being said, like most great guitarists, Senoue is at his best when he works together with other musicians, something he seems happy to agree with when you consider he basically thinks of composing for Sega as being in a band. SA1, for example, is one of his most diverse outings when it comes to the range of genres and influences he covers, and you can tell it’s because he was playing off and working more closely with Tokoi and Kumatani than in SA2 and Heroes (where he was more isolated from them due to working in San Fran). His soundtracks for Generations and TSR are triumphant love letters to the series that made him famous, with excellent remixes of classic tracks, all-star lineups of carefully chosen collaborators (and Richard Jacques), and a sense of freshness and energy that really come from Senoue knowing how to choose people he plays off of and contrasts well.
Favourite tracks:
Pleasure Castle, Windy and Ripply, GUN Fortress, After the Adventure, Keys the Ruin, Bingo Party: Lap Music, Mega Man 4 Medley, Sand Road: Lap Music, Casino Park, Sea Gate, Chemical Plant (Modern)

GONNA ASSUME THIS MEANS WRITTEN SONGS BY MUSIC ARTISTS BECAUSE THIS ONE IS VAGUE AF!
Escape from the City, specifically the version from Ted Poley and Tony Harnell from Sonic Generations. I’m not a fan of the constant auto-tuning done to all of Cash Cash’s versions...Although I still do like Sonic Boom 20th Anniversary remix so *shrugs*

( so here’s a headcanon i’ve been sitting on for a while and idk if i ever really mentioned it but ?? after Sonic drifted away from his old bandmates and bounced around from place to place doing small guitar gigs i like to think that when his heroic reputation had started proceeding him, he was approached by some “official artists” (aka the Sonic World equivalent Jun Senoue--- aka Sonic’s favorite guitarist of all time !! (because crush 40 !!!!!!), who had heard of Sonic, was a big fan and also heard his sound with the guitar, so he wanted to do a collaboration with the blue blur.
they ultimately decided they wanted to write a song about Sonic and his lifestyle, and they worked together to develop the lyrics and arrangement for it. Thus, his theme song- It Doesn’t Matter, was created. Sonic preformed as lead guitarist in the official release as well as some background vocals--- along with Jun Senoue on base & helping with arrangements while Tony Harnell was on front vocals. While he doesn’t actually preform in the second version of the song, he did write the melody for it himself as his own more upbeat, faster pace take on the song. It was probably the fondest memory Sonic could take away from those days, and to this day he still shares profits from the song.

how cool is that !! being a world renown hero and having your own theme song you got to write with your favorite musical artist !! it was a 15 year old’s dream come true. )

My obsession with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal...
Being born in the 90′s is not fun for a hair metal girl, but I’ve learned to make the best out of it by inspiring others to find the true beauty and mystery in Rock n Roll that I have found.
Growing up as an only child I was either drawing, writing, or playing the piano. I always enjoyed music and constantly played my baby keyboard I got when I was 4. I started playing the piano fully when I reached the age of 9. I played for a few years and was classically trained.
My european parents grew stricter as I got older. I never really indulged in fun activities and spent the majority of my time with my best friend who lived across the street. At the age of 10, I discovered a few of the “emo” bands that emerged in the early 2000′s, but quickly fell in love with Lady Gaga, Blondie, and Cindi Lauper. I was intrigued by their interesting styles and drag like influences.  I was dabbling with different mainstream metal-core artists and also goth/industrial/black metal artists from the nordic countries. I was always into the 80′s, the high pitched screams, and of course the fast riffs. I  just did not now where to find it.
One day I was sitting in front of my TV and I discovered a song on a car commercial called “Piece of your Action.” I was automatically hooked and typed the lyrics into google to find out who it was. Now... the first thing that popped up was US FEST 1983 Motley Crue. My life took a complete 360. I had finally found everything I had been looking for.
I started watching That Metal Show, Metal Mania, and Metal Evolution. Those 3 shows taught me literally everything I needed to know. I became obsessed with the evolution of heavy metal. That is ALL I did with my life in high school. I was so in love with the changing economical and societal environments and how the music was impacted by it. My background before my crue incident was heavily influenced by punk music. The fast sound “Too Fast for Love” emulated my love for punk but also emphasized the signature 80′s look which I was in love with.
Either way, ever since the crue incident happened I became obsessed. My whole life was dedicated to watching, learning, listening, and LIVING hard rock and heavy metal. I began watching interviews in school, at home, at night, in the morning... 24/7!! I was pretty lonely growing up. I had barely any friends and I found refuge in music.
Now in my college years I find it harder and harder to fit in. Most think it gets easier but for me it hasn’t. The majority of my friends are males who are in their 20′s and 40′s. I love them. I have made friends with a lot of bands and I’m forever grateful for that. When I’m not studying law or business, I spend the majority of my time studying heavy metal. There is something about it that gives me comfort. No matter how lonely it gets I can pop a cd in my vintage stereo, I can spin a vinyl on my turquoise Victrola, or even sync my Spotfiy to my purple Webster speaker.
I worship the ground that musicians walk on. To me, hard rock and heavy metal is a lifestyle and my first love.  I can’t imagine my life without it. It still is and always has been my my only refuge in tough times.
Biggest Influences/Icons (solo, specific members, and band as a whole):
Mark Slaughter/Slaughter, Van Halen (Roth Era), Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin, Eddie Van Halen, Motley Crue, Dokken, Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine, and DOOONNNNNNN Jamieson, George Lynch, David Lee Roth, Michael Sweet/Stryper, Kiss, Judas Priest, Axl Rose, Ralph Saenz, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, Arthur Brown, Screamin Jay Hawkins, Ronnie James Dio, Michael Tramp, Great White (Jack Russell Era), Rainbow, Joe Lynn Turner, Sam Dunn, Britny Fox, Steve Stevens, Michael Angel Batio, Deep Purple (Gillan and Coverdale era), Humble Pie, Eagles, Taime Downe, The Beach Boys, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rush, Johnny Winter, Hanoi Rocks, Tim Kelly, Motorhead, Buddy Rich, Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Doug Aldrich, Cinderella, K.K Downing, Steven Adler, Bon Scott, Randy Rhoads, Glenn Frey, Lizzy Borden,  Tony Harnell, Kix, Helloween (Kai Hansen), Glenn Hughes, Venom, Frankie Bello, Dave Ellefson, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Bobby Blitz/Overkill and MANY MORE.
I from the bottom of my heart want to thank all of you for putting love back into my heart. In my loneliest times I have always had your melodies serenading my every move. I do NOT know what I would do without all of you. Rock n Roll has impacted me so deeply. I have been truly blessed to have discovered such an amazing genre of people/artists/performers who have paved the road to happiness for me. I love, appreciate, and will continue to support you until my dying day because in my worst days YOU were there whether you know it or not.

Former TNT Singer TONY HARNELL Defends His Right To Speak Out On Political Issues
Former TNT Singer TONY HARNELL Defends His Right To Speak Out On Political Issues
Former TNT and SKID ROW singer Tony Harnell has defended his right to speak out on political issues. He told Tom Leu of the Sound Matters Show: “A lot of people feel that artists should not get involved and say anything— or actors or anybody. But I don’t really understand that, because if you have a platform and you have an audience, a lot of people listen to you, I almost feel like everybody…

METALLICA's 'Enter Sandman' Gets 'Jazz' Treatment By ROBERT HAGLUND With Help From BRUCE KULICK
RARE BLACK METAL COLLECTIBLES
Bruce Kulick (KISS), Rudy Sarzo (QUIET RIOT, OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE), Kee Marcello (EUROPE) and Tony Harnell (TNT) are among the guest musicians who appear on Robert Haglund's new album, "I Wanna Be Somebody". Famous Swedish singers like Svante Thuresson and Jan Johansen also contribute duet vocals. Haglund has been a professional musician for 20 years now."At the age of 15, I already knew that I wanted to become a musician," he says. However, as a teenager a lot revolved around the rock star myth. Robert was realistic and talented enough to actually become a trained musical artist, going on the become hired for both shows and musicals. When he saw the DRIFTERS live, he got the idea to form a vocal group. Thus, the FANTASTIC FOUR were born, combining Motown soul with crooner aesthetics. All along, Robert kept enjoying his old favorite rock bands, like KISS and VAN HALEN — rockers with a strong image and great songs with a groove. Soon the idea was born to revisit the world of rock, but from a jazz angle. It wasn't as far-fetched as it may seem. VAN HALEN always had influences from swing jazz — the father of the Van Halen brothers was a jazz clarinetist, and even played on some of the band's albums. "It was also through their lead singer, David Lee Roth, that I discovered Frank Sinatra," says Robert, who once was a contestant in the Swedish version of "Stars In Their Eyes", sucessfully taking on the role of Roth. The idea of an album took shape. Having guest artist seemed obvious, but Robert wanted to whip the material into shape first, in order to be able to present the concept clearly. He took his ideas to multi-instrumentalist Erik Mjörnell, together with whom he created most of the arrangements. A lot of songs were tried out, since not all had the natural swing it took for them to work in this setting. "Arrangements of this type aren't put together in 15 minutes," Robert explains. It had to sound alive, natural and not like the new instrumentations were forced upon the songs. When the track listing was decided on, and arrangements finalized, he started contacting a number of musicians and vocalists. To make sure their hearts were in it, he let them decide which songs to contribute to. The first one to show interest was Kulick, solo guitarist of KISS between 1984 and 1996. "He got back to me the very day after I had contacted him," Robert says. Bruce only works with projects that he genuinely likes, and he found this project to be cool, and well put together. The fact that Kulick ended up appearing on three different tracks was the seal of approval needed to get others on board. Sarzo joins Kulick on the KISS classic "Love Gun". "Sarzo turned out to be another humble star with a big heart," Robert says. "He spends a lot of his time taking care of homeless dogs." The album also features a few Scandinavian musicians and vocalists of note. Marcello gets to showcase his jazz rock and fusion chops in "The Price" by TWISTED SISTER. "Kee is a super musician whose versitality not eveyone is aware of," Robert enthuses. He really made the song shine. If you listen carefully, you can even find a litte tribute to THE BEATLES' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in there. Robert was also very pleased with THIN LIZZY's "Don't Believe A Word", a duet with Harnell. "Tony loves LIZZY, and his voice has a bluesy tone that suits the song perfectly," Robert says. The Swedish stars singing duets with Robert on the album aren't half bad, either. Jan Johansen has his roots in melodic rock, while Svante Thuresson is the only one guesting the album who originally comes from the jazz and swing world. "Svante turns 80 next year, but is still curious about new things," says Robert. The legendary singer chose to lend his smooth voice to "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", a Bobby Bland classic that WHITESNAKE took to another level. The title track, "I Wanna be Somebody", was originally written and recorded by W.A.S.P. Another visual, highly image-driven band that Robert grew up listening to. "Some may think that the title referes to me, but it's mainly about the fact that a lot of people today want to become celebrities at any cost," Robert says. "Our whole society seems to be consumed by this dream of becoming famous." All in all, there are ten brilliantly re-arranged rock classics on the album. Needless to say, Robert is pleased that it will finally see the light of day. "It's easy to lose heart at times, when the jigsaw is spread out, you have kids and everything seems to take more time than it should," Robert says. "But, just like my childhood heroes, I refused to let others decide on my destiny. If one door closes, another one usually opens, and now the album is finished!" It is Robert's hope, and belief, that listeners will find these versions worthwhile. "A lot of rockers probably feels that they have heard a song like 'Enter Sandman' enough times. Here they may find new sides to the song, and others on the album." "I Wanna Be Somebody" will be released August 19 on MMS Records, and distributed by Universal Music.
