Full Name and Family Headcanons
For the extended 141 family plus the fruity bastard betrayer (derogatory (affectionate)), some more complete than others. If any of this is directly contradicted by canon, I don't care, that's why they're headcanons
Soap
John Steven Donald MacTavish
Two loving parents, the youngest with at least 3 older siblings, all sisters. Closely enough related to the Chief of the Name and Arms of MacTavish to a) be considered low upper class and b) know his exact place in the line of hereditary succession. Also the kilt he wears on special occasions is always the modern MacTavish tartan, do your research. Grew up in Bonnyrigg outside Edinburgh and is emotionally attached to Sir Salter Scott
Ghost
Simon Lorcán Riley
Same family and circumstances as '09 Ghost (extremely poor, abusive dad, oldest of two boys), but give him loving maternal grandparents and three cousins. He's Irish by ethnicity and heritage, which a few family members kept alive and passed down to him, but British by nationality. His great-great-(great-?)grandparents migrated to Manchester during the Great Hunger, but his aunt moved back to Ballylongford where some of the family originally lived. His cousins and maternal grandmother are all alive but think he's dead and he keeps it that way for their safety. His middle name is after his maternal grandfather who died when he was young and was given to him by his grandma. I do also hc he's trans and have a deadname headcanon for him but I don't share those. The specific neighborhood he grew up in inside Manchester was Beswick
Gaz
Kyle Adam Garrick
Grew up in Brixton in London, relatively poor with two loving but working parents, but also with an enormous tight-knit community and more neighborhood aunties and uncles and cousins than he knew what to do with. Has one baby sister but she's 20 years younger than him so she's a baby baby and he was already enlisted and moved out when she was born
Price
John Matthew Price
Grew up in Anfield in Liverpool, near the football stadium. Avid fan, ropes Ghost into Liverpool vs Man United debates every season. Ghost doesn't even like football. Middle class, working dad and stay at home mom, older sister, younger sister
Roach
Gary Parker Sanderson
Working poor, older sister, younger brother
Laswell
Katherine Emma Laswell
Middle class child of divorce, no step-siblings or step-parents, lesbian wine aunt who's basically Kate Kane (coincidentally Kate's favorite superhero)
Nikolai
Nikolai Antonovich Pokrovsky
Absent parents, one younger sister
Farah
Farah Leyla Karim
Canon family - two loving parents killed by AQ, one older brother. Her middle name is the Georgian spelling of the Arabic name Layla (see my post about Urzikstan and Abkhazia for why this spelling)
Alex
Alexander Jeremiah Keller
Two older sisters, two triplet sisters (one an hour older, one three hours younger), two younger sisters, single mom, also raised by aunt and grandmother
Alejandro
Alejandro Ernesto Vargas Leon
Grew up working poor, dad died when he was three, mom had to work, older brother 4ys older took jobs for the cartel starting at 12-ish to make ends meet and left Ale as the "man of the house" at 8. Also has one 4ys younger sister (same dad, mom was pregnant) and 12ys younger twin baby brothers (different dad who chose not to be in the picture, oopsie babies). He loves the twins but wants to hang them upside down by their shoelaces more often than not, his sister is just as mischievous but more mature and subtle about it which made her easier to raise
Rudy
Rodolfo Ildefonso Parra Rosales
Born into a poor family, cartel killed his parents when he was three, adopted by a single mom after that. His new family is unrelated to the Cartel but his bisabuela is just as feared and respected as El Sin Nombre and La Araña before her, if not more in some parts of the city. Learned his best chancla skills from her. Only child but grew up in a massive multigenerational multifamily home with at least 20 older cousins - was the baby until he was 7 and now he's the second youngest
Graves
Phillip Windsor Graves
Upper class, born to parents who had an heir to the company because it was expected of them but who didn't actually want or like kids. Essentially raised by a rotating cast of nannies

If you have 26 minutes and want to become more wholistic about the conflict, watch the Israeli narrative that beats the Arab narrative by a mile. There are a few things that should be added here. The British switched sides from Jewish to Arab after 1939 for fear that the Arabs (much bigger population than Jews) would join the Nazi camp. The British were also disappointed that the French conceded to Nazis and London believed that it should take the whole Mideast to itself. When the French came back in 1945, they took Israel's side while Britain was on the Arab side until 1956, when Nasser's nationalization of Suez brought them back together against him. To understand how the British took the Arab side against Israel, think who took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Israel. It was the Jordanian Army led by British general Glubb Pasha. My professor at AUB left Haifa while a kid with his family in 1948 to Alexandria. He used to tell us in class that they left everything in their house as is thinking they would come back from a summer vacation in Alexandria. They were told that the Iraqi Army was coming, would destroy Israel, then they could come back. The Arab armies did come, but they only took the West Bank that Jordanian King Abdullah I wanted to annex. His rivals, at the time the Saudis, vetoed the move at the Arab League, and that's why the West Bank stayed in limbo, a former mandate land without any recognized sovereignty over it (until today). In 1964, Nasser was engaged in war against Saudi and Jordan, in Yemen, and wanted to undermine Saudis and Jordanians, so he instigated the Arabs of the West Bank to secede by proclaiming Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza (then join him in union after Syria had exited the United Arab Republic in 1961). The Palestinians gathered in East Jerusalem and planned to proclaim their state in the West Bank and Gaza, but the Saudis shot down the creation of Palestine at the Arab League because they didn't want to allow their rival Nasser an easy win. Instead, the Saudis propped up their own Palestinian faction that doubled down by saying Palestine would not be West Bank and Gaza only, but all of Mandate Palestine. This was Yasser Arafat. After losing in 1967 and 1973, Saudi and Egypt came to the conclusion that the eradication of Israel was impossible, and decided to share the land with Israel and create Palestine on West Bank and Gaza only, but now it was the radical crazies (Iraq, Syria, Libya) who shot down such plan and propped up Palestinian radical militias. When these Arab regimes weakened, Iran picked up the tab in 1979, has been doing so since. The rest is history.

With Handala Demanding an immediate ceasefire As Israel's aggression against Palestine intensifies, people around the world are wondering what we can and should do. In Italy, 80 cartoonists drew the backs of their own cartoon characters in a campaign to "demand an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, without flags and united with the Handala". "Handala" is a symbol of Palestinian resistance drawn by Palestinian artist Naji al-Ali, and is still depicted in various places in Palestine. "Handala" means "suffering" in Arabic. The back of Handara still continues to appeal for resistance and liberation. Many people in Japan are also thinking about what we can do. They are taking various actions such as demonstrations, boycotts, signing petitions, and standing for ceasefire. Seeing this campaign in Italy, we planned this project in the hope that we could create an appeal with the cooperation of Cartoonists in Japan, along with Handala, to appeal for the back of their own characters. To cartoonist in Japan who agree, please contribute your characters in the back. Any nationality is welcome, as long as you are a manga artist living in Japan. [Additional Notes]  We began accepting applications on December 31, 2023 and immediately received a great response, and the next day, January 1, 2024, we created a official X (formerly Twitter) account and began reposting pictures of  own character's backside tagged with the #withHandala hashtag. Many people agreed but some of them commented that both sides should stop attacking each other. We will refrain from reposting on this account because there is room to discuss such matters. Because we consider this "war" to be ethnic cleansing / ethnocide / genocide by Israel. However, #withHandala has spread as a much larger movement than the three of us had originally anticipated. At the same time, #withHandala has become a big swell that has left our hands. While we respect the wishes of those who agree with the purpose of the #withHandala, we plan to repost mainly "pictures" related to the #withHandala. When we compile the collected drawings, we will mainly select works by professional cartoonists or similar artists, as was our original plan. Please understand that this may be an arbitrary decision. Thank you for your continued support. Italian publisher Eris Edizioni URL ※You can read Naji Al-Ali's books published in Italy in PDF format from this site. Campaign introduction site URL in Italy Naji al-Ali was a Palestinian cartoonist, noted for the political criticism of the Arab regimes and Israel in his works. Al-Ali is best known as the creator of the character Handala, a personification of the Palestinian people that has become prominent symbol of Palestinian nationalism and resistance. One of the best-known cartoonists in the Arab world, and celebrated as the greatest Palestinian cartoon artist. Al-Ali drew over 40,000 cartoons, often reflecting Palestinian and Arab public opinion and offering sharply critical commentaries on Palestinian and Arab politics and political leaders. On 22 July 1987, while outside the London offices of al-Qabas, a Kuwaiti newspaper for which he drew political caricatures, Al-Ali was shot in the neck and mortally wounded.  He died five weeks later in Charing Cross Hospital. He was 50. A Child in Palestine The ruthlessness of Israel, the hypocritical United States, the self-serving Arab ruling class.  Author Naji Al Ali borrowed the perspective of a boy named Handala and quietly and bitterly left Palestinian anger in the form of a single newspaper cartoon. Hi Daphne! I’ll be in London during the cusp of June/July. Where should I hit up for good deals on makeup/fragrances (I.e. covent garden Boots? Superdrug?) Not sure if selfridges is having a sale but I’ve been dying to get my hands on Robert Piguet’s Fracas.
I can't say for much for makeup but your standard Boots, Superdrugs, Harrods Beauty are great! I would be on the look out for Charlotte Tilbury classes where you can learn which makeup suits you can you get a cash back to spend on their products ( aka its free) . If you have time please make a stop at the Face Gym and lemme know how it is!
For perfumes however, I do have more reccomendations:
For Arabic perfumes, Al Baraka is well known for having everything for decent prices. It has become popular on tiktok so not sure how that has impacted the prices. Another option is Al Arabiya which is nearby so you can stop at both whilst there. Arabian Oud Oxford street is a more high end alternative.
In terms of British houses, you have the flagship store for Penhaligons (Luna is a gorgeous summer scent!). You also have Ormonde Jayne,Roja Parfums and Floris ( Would recommend Floris mouthwash ).
For a niche curated selection head to Jovoy in Mayfair which carries some of the aforementioned brands and others as well. If you wanna go even more niche, Bloom Perfumery is a great option.
(Also obviously Harrods Beauty carries a lot of your common well known perfumer brands like Kurkdjian and Diptyque )
Hope this is helpful

THE MOORS
During the European Dark Ages, between the 7th and 14th century AD, the Moorish Empire in Spain became one of the world's finest civilizations. General Tarik and his Black Moorish army from Morocco, conquered Spain after a week-long battle with King Roderick in 711 AD. (The word tariff and the Rock of Gibraltar were named after him). They found that Europe, with the assistance of the Catholic Church, had returned almost to complete barbarism. The population was 90% illiterate and had lost all of the civilizing principles that were passed on by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Tumblr media
The Moors reintroduced mathematics, medicine, agriculture, and the physical sciences. Arabic figures including the zero and the decimal point replaced the clumsy Roman numerals. As Dr. Van Sertima says, "You can't do higher mathematics with Roman numerals." The Moors introduced agriculture to Europe including cotton, rice, sugar cane, dates, ginger, lemons, and strawberries. They also taught them how to store grain for up to 100 years and built underground grain silos. They established a world-famous silk industry in Spain. The Moorish achievement in hydraulic engineering was outstanding.
They constructed an aqueduct, that conveyed water from the mountains to the city through lead pipes from the mountains to the city. They taught them how to mine for minerals on a large scale, including copper, gold, silver, tin, lead, and aluminium. Spain soon became the world centre for high-quality sword blades and shields. Spain was eventually manufacturing up to 12,000 blades and shields per year. Spanish craft and woollen became world famous. The Moorish craftsman also produced world-class glass, pottery, vases, mosaics, and jewellery.
The Moors introduced to Europe paved, lighted streets with raised sidewalks for pedestrians, flanked by uninterrupted rows of buildings. Paved and lighted streets did not appear in London or Paris for centuries. They constructed thousands of public markets and mills in each city. Cordova alone had 5,000 of each. They were also introduced to Spain's underwear and bathing with soap. Their public baths numbered in the thousands when bathing in the rest of Europe was frowned upon as a diabolical custom to be avoided by all good Christians.
Poor hygiene contributed to the plagues in the rest of Europe. Moorish monarchs dwelled in sumptuous palaces while the crowned heads of England, France, and Germany lived in barns, lacking windows, toilets, and chimneys, with only a hole in the roof as the exit for smoke. Human waste material was thrown in the streets since no bathrooms were present. Education was made mandatory by the Moors, while 90% of Europe was illiterate, including the kings and queens. The Moors introduced public libraries to Europe with 600,000 books in Cordova alone. They established 17 outstanding universities in Spain.
Since Africa is a matriarchal society, women were also encouraged to devote themselves to serious study, and it was only in Spain that one could find female doctors, lawyers, and scientists. Moorish schoolteachers knew that the world was round and taught geography from a globe. They produced expert maps with all sea and land routes accurately located concerning latitude and longitude; while also introducing compasses to Europe.
They were such expert shipbuilders that they were able to use their geography expertise to import and export as far away as India and China. It was not by accident that a Moor named Pietro Olonzo Nino was the chief navigator for Christopher Columbus on the flagship Santa Maria.
He is said to have argued with Columbus as to who really discovered America. One of the worst mistakes the Moors made was to introduce gunpowder technology from China into Europe because their enemies adopted this weapon and used it to drive them out of Spain.
Europe then took the 700 years of civilization and education re-taught to them by the Moors and used this knowledge to attack Africa. While the Moors were re-civilizing Europe, great empires were thriving in Western Africa and frequently traded with the Moors.
These included the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, which prospered between 700 AD and 1600 AD. Africa was not a dark continent awaiting European civilization. In fact, Black African Egyptians and Black African Moors are credited with civilizing Europe."

Could you rec the classic one of them is from a different class?
Yes, we love interclass romances!
Indigo by Beverly Jenkins has an upper class rake from a rich Creole family in New Orleans fall for a freedwoman after she ends up caring for him following his injury as he works as a part of The Underground Railroad.
Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins has a cook fall in love with the rich guy in town who she thinks is white (he's not--he's passing and he's super in love with her).
Butterfly Swords by Jeannie Lin has an emperor's daughter fall in love with a mercenary she meets after her entourage is attacked when she's on the way to marry a warlord.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath--Of course, Jack Dodger is a street rat grown up, and Olivia is a refined duchess. Maybe the ultimate version of this, for me. Like, the opening pages are literally her describing how hot he makes her as she looks at him in a chair and then thinking "..... I MEAN GROSS".
Surrender to the Devil by Lorraine Heath--The next book in the series, she's the former street urchin, he's a duke. Super emotional and romantic and I find that the narrative really challenges the hero to be a better person.
Of course, this is also like... the entire conceit of Lorraine's Sins for All Seasons series, as the Trewloves are illegitimate and they fall for people in the upper classes. Would especially rec:
Beyond Scandal and Desire--Mick is a powerful man of business who decides to ruin his legitimate half-brother's fiancee as a part of Revenge, only to be like "gosh she's pretty" all the time.
When a Duke Loves a Woman--Gillie Trewlove owns as a tavern and doesn't take any shit; she then finds a glasses-wearing hot man duke on the street after he's mugged and nurses him back to health. But he's meant to marry another, oh no!
The Scoundrel in Her Bed--Lavinia, a fine lady, was in love with Finn Trewlove when they were younger, only for fate (and other things) to tear them apart. Years later, he finds her hiding out on the streets and trying to help illegitimate babies who've been abandoned by their parents. Incredibly angsty and emotional second chance romance stuff ensues, and reader, I did cry for real.
Beauty Tempts the Beast--Beast, The Biggest Trewlove, meets a former aristocrat who's fallen on hard time and asks her to teach his employees (sex workers, because Beast accidentally came to own a brothel but wants to help the women get out of the trade what with it being Victorian London) refinement. She says yes, but only if he teaches her seduction so that she can become a rich man's mistress, as she thinks that's all she can do.
Rules for a Proper Governess by Jennifer Ashley--The hero is an upper class attorney, the heroine is a streetwise con artist who becomes obsessed with him (because he's a DADDY) and ends up becoming the governess for his two kids. This hero has an oral fixation and there's a scene where he sucks on her finger and it's great.
S.M. LaViolette's The Seducers series (Melissa and The Vicar, Joss and The Countess, and Hugo and The Maiden) are all about sex workers or former sex workers falling for people from the middle or upper classes. Super hot.
KJ Charles's The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and The Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel are both m/m interclass romances involving the Doomsday crime family falling in love with lords~.
Marry Me by Midnight by Felicia Grossman has a rich heiress fall for a poor synagogue employee while she's looking for a husband. So rare to find a historical that focuses on the Jewish upper class in England.
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy has a duke who's cash poor find out that the castle he thought he owned has been inherited by an Arab-American woman who ends up being his arch rival. Also, he wants to hold her and kiss her and deck her out in gold and fuck the shit out of her.
After Dark with the Duke by Julie Anne Long has a war hero, stuffy duke fall in love with a much younger (17 year age gap) scandalous opera singer. How to Tame a Wild Rogue is a bottle romance by her, in which a fine lady who's become a spinster falls for a roguish privateer. They end up sharing a room at a boarding house during a storm and... dot dot dot.
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian is a m/m book in which an upper class lord asks a former highwayman to teach him how to crime so that he can steal an important book from his shitty dad. The next book, The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes, has the lord guy's stepmother fall in love with a con artist dude. Unmasked by the Marquess is another queer historical by Cat (m/nb) in which a marquess falls in love with a his new best friend, who is not who they seem to be...
Grace Callaway writes a lot of interclass. Would recommend Pippa and The Prince of Secrets (upper class widow falls in love with crime guy who gave her her first kiss), Glory and The Master of Shadows (duke's daughter falls for a Chinese vigilante guy who's seeking revenge against the people that killed his family; it's very student/teacher), and Her Protector's Pleasure (upper class widow meets detective guy as he helps her look for her missing daughter).
Duchess By Day, Mistress By Night by Stacy Reid has a widowed duchess hire a lower class guy who's risen to be a known fixer to help her find her son's governess when the governess goes missing. He doesn't wanna be paid in money...
A Scoundrel of Her Own by Stacy Reid has a poor upper class woman fall in love with the guy she knew as a kid, who's lower class but now wealthy. He's always wanted her and wants to take advantage of her falling on hard times--but, you know, feelings.
Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas--Annabelle is upper class but poor, Simon is rich but comes from the lower classes. He asks her to be his mistress when her family falls on hard times.
Joanna Shupe's entire Uptown Girls series has the daughters of an upper class New York guy fall for lower class self-made guys (a lawyer/fixer, a casino owner, and a gangster).
Elizabeth Hoyt has plenty: The Raven Prince (earl/his widowed secretary), The Leopard Prince (heiress/her steward), The Serpent Prince (titled lord and a poor girl), Thief of Shadows (widowed lady/middle class schoolmaster), Duke of Midnight (duke/lady's companion to a woman he's courting, though her family used to be fine), Dearest Rogue (duke's sister/her bodyguard), Duke of Pleasure (duke/street urchin), Duke of Sin (duke/his housekeeper).

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Here are some books I highly recommend written Asian authors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Stories for punjabi widows ( sorry for not saying the full name of the book I don't want Tumblr to hide this post for " inappropriate material") by Balli Kaur Jaswal. This is not a collection of short stories. This is a novel set in London that focuses on law school drop out Nikki who is trying to pay the bills well finding her place in life. On a whim she takes up a teaching job at her local Sikh Community Center. Before she knows what's going on her students have hijacked the class and turned it into a writing workshop for their favorite scandalous subject. Full of love, humor, drama, trauma, and secrets, Nikki starts to understand the women in her community better and starts to ask the harder questions she's been ignoring her whole life. This book was a joy to read. Be forewarned there is both humor and heartbreak. Trigger warning: arranged marriages, child brides, bride burning, domestic violence, harassment, threat of violence, physical violence.
2) NOT your Sidekick by CB Lee. I love love love this book! A young adult novel set in the futuristic world. You have queer main characters, a comedic villain, loving and supportive parents, fear of not being good enough, confronting the model minority myth, having to compete with the gold star older sibling, this book hits on some really good issues. Jess is in high school and is the most average person in her family. Being the only person in her family who does not have super powers she's trying hard to not let anyone see how upset she is when she accepts the fact that she's never going to be a superhero. Determine to make her college application look good, she signs up for an internship. After signing a non-disclosure agreement she finds out she'll be interning for the local c-list super villain. Things aren't exactly as they seem though, the more research Jess starts to do, and the more she starts to think about it, she's convinced that the government is up to something and the superheroes are involved. Well I'll admit this is the type of story that you can immediately figure out how it's going to end from the first chapter that doesn't mean that it's not enjoyable. Trigger warning: racism
3. We hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal. This fantasy novel was a delightful fairytale rich in Arabic lore. Zafira is a hunter who is just trying to keep the people in her Village alive as they have no means to grow food or hunt on their own thanks to a curse that has taken over her country. Enter Nasir, the prince of death. An assassin who has to do his father's evil bidding. When Zafira meets a witch who sends her on a magical quest that should help restore magic to the land, the sultan sends his son after Zafira to intercept her quest. Alliances, foes, magic, mystery, the book keeps you guessing who's going to betray who up to the end. Trigger warning: violence, death.
4. Build your house around my body by Violet Kupersmith. Written by a mixed-race Vietnamese American author, this book is about loss, wanting to be accepted, wanting to belong, wanting to fit in and find community, as well as the emptiness left by colonization. The book takes place over about seventy years. It jumps around time periods and focuses on several different characters. Nothing is told in a linear fashion so I know some readers have been confused by this. Basically we learn about Vietnamese American Winnie who has moved to Vietnam and wants so badly to fit in and find her home amongst Vietnamese Nationals but she just doesn't fit in with Vietnamese society. We also follow the childhood of three best friends who grew up in Vietnam and learned about their eventual dirft apart as they enter adulthood. There is an orphan boy who is living under the tyranny of French Catholics and we hear about how he got to watch the French be chase out by the Japanese. Then those Vietnamese children who were under French rule became oppressed by Japanese colonisation. Missing women, people looking to sell Vietnamese women as brides for foreigners all over the world, a ghost, plantations, build your house around my body feels like one big Vietnamese ghost story. Trigger warning: child abuse, violence towards women, murder, death, exploitation of people.
5. In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami. Kenji is an unlicensed translator and tour guide for tourist in Tokyo. One day Kenji gets a American client who makes him very uneasy. Most of the book takes place in Kenji's mind as he contemplates what's going on in the world around him and whether or not his client is acting weird or is just being an obnoxious American. With a violent serial killer on the loose and many coincidences piling up Kenji's paranoia might be justified. Well there's not much plot to the book itself, I really suggest it because of all of its social commentary. Although published in the 90s, it deals with Timeless issues that are still culturally and universally relevant to this day. Issues like sexism, exploitation of sex workers, cultural identity, domestic violence, xenophobia, loneliness, poverty, consumerism, are just a handful of the subjects this book touches on. There is a moment in the book i like where the tourist tells Kenji that he is surprised to see the Japanese youth dress the exact same way that African-American youth dress in New York. Even Kenji has a moment of realization. In the beginning of the book he is quick to condemn teenage girls who become sex workers to pay the bills, saying that if they weren't out at night with adult men they would not get hurt but by the end of the book he gets mad at how everybody always blames the girls in these situations and never blames the adult men who attacked them. Trigger warning: gore, mutilation, Bloodshed, violence, body parts being sliced off, murder, this book is not for the faint of heart. If you seen the 1990s Japanese horror film the Audition, Ryu also wrote the Audition novel. In the Miso soup follows a similar style of it's a slow build-up to the scary scene.
6. Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar. If your fans of Neil gaiman's Stardust you'll like Star daughter. Sheetal is the daughter of a South Asian man and a literal star. Her mother came down from the heavens and fell in love with her father but when Sheetal was a child her mom returned to the heavens. As her 17th birthday draws near, Sheetal is unable to control her new powers, and ends up accidentally injuring her father. Wanting to correct her mistake, Sheetal and her best friend travel to the mysterious Night Market to try to find a cure. Instead they end up in the heavens where her mom resides and finds that her maternal side of the family are extorting her. In exchange for healing her father they want Sheetal to be their champion in a competition that will decide who gets to rule the heavens for the next millennia. Lies, family secrets, tragedy, love, Beautiful lore, and even more beautiful outfits, this fairy tale is a lovely young adult novel. Trigger warning: abuse, torture, mental health decline, blood
7. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. A mix of folklore, sci-fi, fantasy, and historical fiction, if you're a fan of Pacific Rim I recommend Iron Widow. This book is very fast-paced from the get-go there's a battle, death, and bloodshed from the very beginning. Wu Zetian is the main protagonist of the story. On a quest to avenge her dead sister, Wu Zetian isn't going to let anyone get in her way, not her family, not her best friend, not the government, not the patriarchy, not even the aliens invading the planet. Li Shimin is the sexy but scary inmate with a mysterious past, on death row for murdering his entire family, who finds himself unwillingly being partnered up with Wu Zetian. Gao Yizhi is the rich son of one of the wealthiest men in the country and he's not afraid to rub it in your face if you piss him off. In fact my favorite line from this book comes from Gao, " you can't kill me, I'm rich!". He's very self aware and also Wu's best friend who wants to help keep her alive. As the three characters who are completely different come to rely on one another they end up uncovering multiple conspiracies and forming a wonderful polyamorous Triad. Trigger warning: mentions of sexual assault, death, abusive family, torture, violence towards women
8. Arsenic and Adobo by  Mia P. Manansala follows the shameful life of Lila as she unwillingly returns to her small home town to live with her auntie after she is unable to get a job with her college degree and a bad breakup. Her tia Rosie runs a Filipino restaurant and is being harassed by the local food critic. Unfortunately for Lila the annoying food critic is also her ex-boyfriend. Things get worse when he dies at her aunt's restaurant and shenanigans ensue from there. Full of love, Millennial and Gen Z humor, lots of delicious food, and unapologetically Filipino this book is definitely not your grandma's murder mystery. Bonus points, there is some recipes at the end of the book. Trigger warning: death, murder, mentions of addiction.
9. The Bone People by Keri Hulme. Kerewin is a painter and indigenous Maori woman living in isolation in New Zealand. One day she finds a mute white child named Simon in her house. No one really knows much about Simon. He washed up on the beach one day after a shipwreck and doesn't talk. He is still able to communicate with other characters. He is both kind and loving but also prone to temper tantrums, violent outbursts, and stealing. Joe is a mixrace widower who takes on the responsibility of being a foster father for Simon but due to his alcoholism he abuses and beat Simon. As the three characters confront their own identity issues and trauma, they come to love one another and form a family together. This book is unsettling but at the same time heart-warming. Trigger warning: violence, alcoholism, child abuse.
10. The Vegetarian by Han Kang. Set in South Korea, this psychological drama takes place in 3 parts, all from the different points of view of Yeong-hye's relatives. Yeong-hye decides she is going to become a vegetarian one day. This decision does not come about in a quiet subtle way but rather radical in your face shock as her husband walks into the kitchen one day to find meat on the floor and in the trash can as she announces they will no longer have meat in their house. From her husband's point of view we find out that he is an unreliable narrator as it's clear he's pretty toxic, possibly even abusive towards his wife and constantly belittles her. In her brother-in-law's prospective he sees Yeong-hye as very attractive and wishes that his perfect Korean model wife was more like her sister. I won't give away any spoilers from the final part which is told from her sisters perspective but I will say it is sad. Ultimately the book is about conformity and how much Yeong-hye has had her life ripped away from her by her family, friends, and Society. Trigger warning abuse, toxic relationships, family abuse, attempted suicide, blood, medical abuse, mental health issues.
That's all for now. Have you read any of these books? Do you like any of them? Got any books to recommend for AAPI month?

FULL NAME: ILLIR VORPSI » MEANING: Ilir [Albanian; Freedom or free. A character from Albanian mythology. ]; Vorpsi [The Vorpsi surname is a native Albanian surname/tribe of Tirana. It originates from the words vorbull and vorb, meaning 'whirlpool' and referring to the families' occupation was pottery. Another theory is from Maja e Vorbatines, a mountain range in north Albania which they could be related too, but the occupational surname theory is more credible.]
Adding coz KARKANXHOLL I guess doesn't literally translates to 'werewolf" but... It sounded cool so, Illir and I was like, YEP. In Albanian Mythos, The ‘’Karkanxholl’'  was that Culture’s ‘’Vampire’’ figure. However, unlike the ‘’traditional’’ Vampire Beings, The Karkanxholl was also part-Wolf. As such, They were often portrayed in A rt and Literature as being ‘’Humanoid’’ with the overall qualities of both ‘’Vampire’’ and ‘’Werewolf’’. The set-apart for The Being was that it was most shown as being ‘’Human’’, but wearing Chain Mail (a loose fitting Armor). Blood Drinkers, The Karkanxholl were most often Male in portrayal – and could be ‘’extinguished’’ like most traditional ‘’Vampires’’.

i think one thing this vacation has been good for is allowing me to think about what i want my future to look like and assess where i want to go and how long i want it to take me. i was really frustrated with the writing of my dissertation but against all odds and contrary to my own beliefs, i ended up doing way better than i'd have expected. like if i had to give myself a grade it'd be way below what i got and i guess people will say "stop being so hard on yourself" but that's who i am lol i am a tough crowd. anyway now that I've spent hours meditating in the pool and the ocean i think i have a solid game plan. it's quite flexible tbh but i want to be more intentional with my time and effort and less opportunity-based. also literally right after i wrote the last sentence i opened LinkedIn and i saw one of my old mutuals on there she wrote an article that my friend who now lives in London liked zjfkjdsg talk about a small world. should i hit her up like hey girlie remember me LMAO. ok back to the topic: i will focus on the next steps. and i will take this serendipitous encounter as a sign that yes i should get arabic classes in 2024

OERA LINDA BOOK
On or about April 19, 1820, Aafje Meylhoff— nee Oera Linda—took possession of an old manuscript, part of her ten-year-old nephew Cornelius's inheritance, and hid it. The mysterious Oera Linda Bok, a mix of historical document and magical grimoire, had been in the family since the sixth century BC. In 1848, a much older Cornelius took the manuscript to Dr. D. Verwijs, who determined that it had been written on cotton paper using iron-free black ink, and had been copied in 1256 from a previous document.
This bewildering book tells of a northern continent called Atland (not Atlantis), a semicircular land mass off the Netherlands' Frisian coast. It had a semitropical climate, abundant food, and peaceful people until 2193 BC, when a great catastrophe destroyed the island. Some of the inhabitants survived and moved south.
The era Linda Bok covers many topics. Some include:
* the Greek hero Ulysses visiting Atland in search of a sacred lamp that would make him king of Italy;
* numerical symbols coming from ancient Frisian language rather than Arabic;
* Atland's use of Britain as a penal colony;
* Atland's legendary founder, a half-mythical woman named Frya;
* a warrior named Friso, an officer of Alexander the Great and an offspring of the Frisians who went south after the disaster to Punjab, India, about 1550 BC.
Dr. Verwijs wanted the book published. The first publisher condemned it as a hoax, but in 1876 a respectable London publisher released it, with the original Frisian script printed alongside an English version, under the title The Oera Linda Book: From a Manuscript of the Thirteenth Century.
The Oera Linda Bok comprises six "books" though only one of the six is actually a book. The Oera Linda Book: From a Manuscript of the Thirteenth Century.

Things in YuuMori that could be the authors not quite knowing or it could be part of the story - Part 1
So, we can all agree that YuuMori takes quite a few ... artistic liberties, when it comes to western historical accuracy, christian themes etc. (Which I, as a christian-raised european, actually quite enjoy, it takes the forced "perfection" out of the equation and makes for a much more pleasant reading of the actual story)
Now I was thinking of some things, that stood out to me, when reading the manga, that I wanted to talk about
(This will mostly focus on the english translation of the manga, because my japanese is not yet good enough to reliably understand the whole context, so if you see something, that doesn't come across in the english translation very well, but is in the japanese, please do not hesitate to tell me)
This will also be a multi-part-series, because it goes on longer than I thought it would
Sherlock's Cockney Dialect
As people have previously pointed out, Sherlock and Mycroft were born in "North Riding" (presumably "The North Riding Of Yorkshire", which is a historical region near York in, you guessed it, Yorkshire), as per the official character sheets in Volume 18
In Volume 2 Chapter 5 "The Noahtic, Act 1" William says Sherlock "[CHOOSES] to speak with a Cockney Accent"
Tumblr media
And while Sherlock doesn't actually speak in a Cockney Accent in the manga (because american translators can't write british dialects apparently) it does get implied every now and then
Now, Cockney is a VERY regional dialect and sociolect of english, that is basically only spoken by the working class and lower middle class in London (which is about 300 km away from Yorkshire (which doesn't sound like a lot, but for a dialect it is))
Side Note - Cockney can also historically more or less refer to people, things, culture etc. from London's East End (The place where William and Louis grew up, before they were adopted into the Moriarty house hold, and I think it's quite funny to imagine William and Louis being able to switch between Cockney and The Queen's English quite easily, and maybe even other dialects)
So Sherlock was born in Yorkshire, has a brother who speaks The Queen's English and chooses to speak in Cockney ... How does that make sense?
And some people have proposed that Sherlock might have commuted between Yorkshire and London when he was younger and therefore he might have picked up Cockney on some or other escapades to The East End Of London, but that doesn't seem completely right
And honestly I did think at first that it was just Miyoshi-Sensei and / or Takeuchi-Sensei not being quite aware of english dialects (and granted, that could be the case)
BUT it could also be, that Sherlock and Mycroft's The Queen's English speaking father, married their Cockney speaking mother
(At this point it should be stated that "proper" The Queen's English is more or less an "artificial dialect" (as artificial as english dialects can get, (which is not very)) and learned and used a lot by for example the BBC (that's why it's also sometimes called BBC english) and government officials (at least until a few decades ago) and about as close as you can get to a british "high english" as some other languages have "high languages" (high german, high arabic etc.))
So father Holmes, presumably a government official, might actually come from The North Riding Of Yorkshire, learned The Queen's English, met mother Holmes, had children with her
And while Mycroft, probably already early on, was involved with the Holmes' legacy and almost always has to hold himself in a "proper manner"
Sherlock, as the second son, probably didn't feel as much pressure to conform (or he just didn't really care) and if he has a better relationship with his mother than he has with his father, then maybe he just decided he did not want and / or need to "[FIX] his accent" (as he says to Billy in Chapter 67), the dialect of his mother, Cockney
Tumblr media
He might consciously choose to speak in Cockney and not force himself to speak The Queen's English, because he is proud of his and his mother's roots, like William says
I will for now try to ignore the fact that it doesn't really make sense for someone like Sherlock and Mycroft's father (who is presumably a relatively high-ranking government official like Mycroft) to marry someone from a class in London that speaks Cockney (like Sherlock and Mycroft's mother and / or her family apparently does)

is that ZAYN MALIK? oh, no, that’s RASHID SYED, a THIRTY year old SOUS-CHEF at INESPERADO who uses HE/HIM pronouns. they currently live in LAS TIERRAS DEL SOL HOUSING in QUILPUÉ, and the character they identify with most is MIRAGE from APEX LEGENDS.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ basics.
full name: rashid syed .
nickname(s): n/a .
age: thirty .
zodiac: leo .
birthdate: 8th of august , 1993 .
ethnicity: pakistani - british .
gender: cis male .
pronouns: he / him .
orientation: heterosexual / heteroromantic .
occupation: sous - chef at inesperado .
language(s) spoken: english , urdu , arabic (reading only) , (basic) spanish .
other character inspirations: octane (apex legends) , sett (league of legends) .
aesthetics: caffeinated energy drinks , the slice of a lemon on the edge of an iced tea , the sky just before sunset with bright orange and red hues , the refreshing sensation of the occasional cool breeze on a warm day , the smell of a homemade dish of food , the thrill of riding every roller coaster at an amusement park , the strange urge to throw your phone out of a moving vehicle , the chaotic mess of a kitchen during dinner rush .
most replayed song: am i wrong by anderson .paak .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ personality.
high-energy, either due to his line of work or the amount of redbulls he drinks. means well, truly, but is a dumbass. while energetic, he still tends to be a man of few words, unless he truly loves you. he's only really serious when it comes to food, otherwise he enjoys good banter and basking in a "himbo" lifestyle. adrenaline junkie, a daredevil. only really feels alive when cooking or doing something chaotic. enjoys working out as a way to release a lot of his energy. claims he hates dancing, but dances when no one is watching. has a bit of an ego (especially in the kitchen) but tries not to let it get too his head too often.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ background.
born and raised in london, rashid was the first son and middle child of three blessed into a loving, growing family. his parents were both successful in their careers: his father being a well-respected surgeon and his mother being a professor at a renowned university located in the city, which allowed rashid and his siblings to live a comfortable life in the upper-class neighborhood of notting hill. surrounded by high-end restaurants, rashid seemed to get an affinity for food early-on. he'd pick apart his favorite meals from the surrounding restaurants his family would go to, studying the meal in order to replicate it at home. as a child, he would often help his mother with cooking meals for their family; and once he was old enough, he begged his parents to allow him to cook the family dinners on his own every few days, which only further pushed his love for the skill. rashid was always a rambunctious and curious child, often getting himself into trouble (or simply driving his parents mad). he participated in multiple sports both in and outside of school, but he still had so much pent up energy. he expelled it as best as he could in his youth, whether it was through football (he'll go crazy if you call it soccer in front of him), attending gym class, or trying his best at parkour (he was never really that good; he just liked the thrill of it all). once he was old enough, he started doing things that really tested his need for "thrills": he became a full-fledged adrenaline junkie. he enjoyed racing, doing tricks on a motorbike, going out of his way to only ride the biggest rides at parks, doing bungee jumps, anything. he never got tired of the exhilaration, always feeling the most alive when he was doing something risky. after he finished his education at university, he wanted to do something different. at this point, he had spent over two decades in the same city, doing the same thing over and over again. he was ready for something new. he picked up a few jobs at some of the high-end restaurants in his neighborhood, traveled out on his own, and experimented with different recipes at home. he continued this for a few years, feeling... content, but never really satisfied. it wasn't until a coworker of his mentioned traveling the world to work at renowned restaurants and broaden their horizons. something about that made a spark in rashid's eyes. after months of research, he finally made his decision: he would travel to valparaíso, home to the famous restaurant known as inesperado. he applied, obtained a job as a sous-chef, packed his bags, and moved across the globe. as of 2024, he has been living in valpo for about two years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ headcanons. (tw: marijuana mention)
has a penchant for cooking pakistani meals, as taught to him by his mother (as she was taught by rashid's paternal grandmother). his favorite dishes are sajji and gobi aloo.
he enjoys running. it's probably the easiest way for him to stay in shape and expel his high energy. he also enjoys football (soccer) and motorcycling.
he loves going bungee jumping, rock climbing (mountains more than rock walls but he'll enjoy either), street racing, etc. typical daredevil stuff. but more than anything, he just loves the rush.
he loves r&b. his favorite artists include anderson .paak, goldlink, d'angelo, marvin gaye, and kyle dion. he'd also die for sza.
he's a dumbass. through and through. simple things don't connect to him and he'll sometimes just stare at you while he's trying to figure out what the hell is going on. it's either a mouth-breathing blank stare, or a big grin with empty eyes where you can see the cogs staying still. there is nothing behind that gaze.
is close with his family back home, calling and texting them regularly. they've yet to visit him, though. he claims to not mind, he's a grown ass man, but he gets sad over it sometimes.
he knows he's attractive. not in a mean, big-headed ego way, but he is confident in himself. benefits from pretty boy privilege.
with that being said, he's still a playboy. he enjoys flirting and the attention that comes with it. he's currently single and has no plans to change that. claims its because he wants to focus on his career, but, c'mon...
the only video games he plays are nba2k and apex legends. he is, in fact, an octane main (don't boo him).
he loves his job at inesperado. it's pretty much a dream job for him to work at such a renowned and world-famous restaurant as one of the sous-chefs. the second he walks into that kitchen, he's in his zone.
in the same vein, the only time you really see him using his brain is when he's cooking. you can tell upon first meeting him that his man loves to cook.
ratatouille is his favorite disney movie! referencing it is a sure-way to get on his good side.
he enjoys the occasional joint. doesn't indulge regularly as he doesn't want to get into legal trouble and lose his job. does not smoke cigarettes. enjoys drinking socially, always has a bottle of wine to crack open with friends in his apartment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ wanted connections. (more tba!)
typical friendship dynamics! neighbors in quilpue, people he sees at the gym when he attends, his favorite regulars at inesperado, people to smoke with, friends he's made since moving to valpo two years ago, etc.
an ex, someone rashid was seeing for quite some time until things were broken off. maybe he broke things off to "focus on work", or maybe your muse broke it off for their own reasons. more details can be plotted out!
fwbs, flings, one-night-stands turned awkward interactions when they bump into each other around the city. maybe a regular that has a crush on him? maybe he has an eye for them too? or maybe it's one-sided?
other adrenaline junkies, daredevils, or anyone looking to do crazy shit. someone rashid can hit up to go on a late-night ride with where they'll inevitably speed and swerve through traffic. someone he knows would be down to do chaotic shit with.

LENA YENER —
cis female & she/her
32
august 8, 1991
artist / owner of the broken spine
south addition
biography
lightening round —
born and raised in washington dc. parents emigrated from turkey. father was a diplomat and mother still works as a translator/interpreter
had a very strict and conservative upbringing. suffered abuse at the hands of a family member and was kept in silence about it
went to nyc for university and her first art project. the first exlorations into her art and ideas began with photography at music festivals, art directing for advertisements and magazines, and music videos
met her first partner and began a relationship with them during this time, even asked them to move back to washington dc with her when her time in nyc came to an end
the relationship always felt as though it were missing something and as though lena kept coming up short. when a new project came up and lena was to relocate for her work (to anchorage) she asked her partner to come with her and proposed. the no on both counts was devastating but she poured her pain into her work. plus it went along with the theme of her life
the move to anchorage was only meant to be temporary but lena ended up in a rebound relationship that fulfilled a void and she ended up staying even after her project was complete. making a home in anchorage and traveling when necessary
upon settling into anchorage, lena opened a book bar called the broken spine and has too much fun running it
as with anything else in her life relating to love, the rebound relationship eventually came to an end. leaving lena to stop making her work about heartbreak and push for something greater
a few of her projects/series have brought her international attention and acclaim. the first being, ‘i could not protect her’, a multimedia work, both her signature cinematic still photography along with a silent film detail her journey though abuse and the unchecked actions by the abuser. the next being her series titled “3ieb!” in arabic / “shame on me!” in english. a series that equally caused an uproar and gave voice to hundreds of thousands of middle eastern women all over the world
recently lena has been dipping her toe into video work once again, beginning to shift away from her decade long photography medium by publishing a book of a compilation of all her work. a little different from the music videos she’d produced in the past and her recent foray into short film, lena is interested in moving forward in long-form video work
the positive shift in her love life, experiencing real love for the first time without the usual toxicity she’d fallen into in the past and finally experiencing healthy love has also made a big difference

THE MOORS By: Dr. Leroy Vaughn, MD, MBA. A Dynamic, Honest and Powerful View of Black History.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the European Dark Ages, between the 7th and 14th century AD, the Moorish Empire in Spain became one of the world's finest civilizations. General Tarik and his Black Moorish army from Morocco, conquered Spain after a week-long battle with King Roderick in 711 AD. (The word tariff and the Rock of Gibraltar were named after him). They found that Europe, with the assistance of the Catholic Church, had returned almost to complete barbarism. The population was 90% illiterate and had lost all of the civilizing principles that were passed on by the ancient Greeks and Romans. They produced expert maps with all sea and land routes accurately located with respect to latitude and longitude; while also introducing compasses to Europe. #Africa

All's Fair
A/N Dear gentle reader, I would not start a new story. But this came to my head, and I had to get it out. This will be a short story but with our favorite people.  I credit anyone who has had this story before.  @ladymeraud
AO3
She sits on the stern of the ship as it makes its way across the English Channel heading to England and the Evac Hospital that awaits her. How did she end up here? She wanted to be a botanist, not a nurse in the middle of a bloody war! Would Geillis be sent to Paris and her Uncle Lamb back to Egypt?

It was those thoughts that made her legs waver and had Geillis sitting her down and running to fetch water for her.  She fears being alone, like she almost was at five, when her parents passed.

A boating accident whilst they were on vacation took their lives. Luckily, for her, she was at their cabin on Loch Lomond, with her nanny when it happened.

Her uncle was called, by her nanny. She recalled him coming from Egypt, where he served as a curator for the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He packed her bags up and they moved to Egypt.

Her uncle worked with a long time friend, Yussef. Yussef’s mum became a type of second mum to her. Nubia took care of her and her Uncle Lamb.

She spent as many hours at Nubia’s house as she does her and Uncle Lamb ‘s. There she learns Egyptian and Farsi. She teaches her to cook and clean, how to sew and embroider. Claire learns the Egyptian stitch, which she makes into chains that become blankets. It is a skill that Nubia learned from her own great-grandmother.

As the years went on, Claire realizes that Uncle Lamb and Yussef are more than good friends. It doesn’t bother her.

Uncle Lamb was offered a position on a research project that took him to Mexico and South America. Though Nubia offered to look after Claire, Uncle Lamb took her with him. There she added  Portuguese and Spanish to her vocabulary. While in Argentina, a bit of German, as well.

When they made it back to Egypt, Nubia continues her education, teaching her about plants and their many uses. That is when Claire decided she wanted to be a botanist.

When she turns fifteen, Uncle Lamb moves them to England so she can take her tests and finish her education at Oxford. She is admitted to Oxford University at sixteen. Her uncle takes a job as a Professor of History. They keep in touch with Yussef and Nubia through letters written in Arabic, which Claire writes and speaks well.

Her thoughts of the past are interrupted when Geillis returns with the water. They are almost at London and the waiting Evac Hospital. Her thoughts turn from the past to the future and her boyfriend, Frank.

They meet at Oxford, in the one class she didn’t test out of, history.  He pursued her desperately. They went on two dates but, she wasn’t in love with him and had given thought to contact him before the accident.

She was in the middle of finishing her schooling. Hitler and the Nazis were making more and more noise in Europe. A war was inevitable. Claire understood that a botanist wasn’t needed but a nurse was. She changed course and went after her nursing degree at the John Radcliffe. By September of 1938, the Nazis were bombing England. Though war hadn’t been officially declared, it was only a matter of time. Claire is ready as an official nurse.

Geillis comes and asks if she is ready to move downstairs, to their room, as night falls. Two strong men help Geillis carry her down and get her settled. She dreams of her Uncle Lamb.

In January of 1939, on the cusp of war, they start gathering doctors and nurses, taking  them to the ports ready to head to France. Frank went with her to the train station. Before she climbs onboard, he slips a ring on her finger.

“A promise ring, Claire. A promise that, when you return, we will be married.”

Internally, she is rolling her eyes. He isn’t the man for her but, right now, he is the only person in her life. She enters the train and a whole new world.

Getting to France was easier then they thought, as the Nazis had yet to start bombing the coastlines.

Once they arrived in La Herve, they debarked the boats and were sent by trucks towards the new hospitals that are being set up to attend to British and French wounded.
