Revolution Day Speeches, Part Two
Damien Styles: Union President, Resource Workers United
Styles walked up to the podium and held his baseball cap up in the air, flashing the bold red letters to the camera. Most knew the routine by now. “See this hat? What does it say!?”
“It says BOSS!” The Union workers in the crowd roared.
“What does it mean!?”
“It means you’re in charge!”
He puts the hat back on his head. “Damn right it does. I won’t worry about any other introductions. You pay your utilities; you know who I am- you’re welcome. You already know about what we’ve been doing last year. This year, I want to bring up something.”
“We still don’t have Hades yet. Believe me, I’m upset too. No empty promises from me, people- we’re getting serious now. The avalanche that hit Yard 6 over the winter came out of nowhere and our mining head just finished his survey. That thing was triggered. No points for guessing who.” He waits for the murmuring in the crowd to stop. When it didn’t, he held his hand up to the mircophone and the magnetic feedback caused a harsh shriek. “CALM DOWN! You’re talking to professionals here! I already have a plan. My promise this year is to make absolutely sure we don’t see that shit again. The Union is going to be having a trip up into the mountains to see what else we can find. We’ll be taking volunteers but ONLY the ones who make the cut. If you can’t handle the cold, don’t show up. If you can’t handle the mountains, don’t show up. If you’re afraid the dark, heights, or tight spaces, don’t show up. If you think this is going to be easy, don’t show up. If you think you’ve got what it takes, talk to Axton Walsh as soon as possible. We’re leaving no stone unturned and paying that bastard back for every life he stole. Styles out.”

Lucianna Markella: High Priestess of the Consecration of Creation
“Creation bless you all this Revolution Day.” The High Priestess was looking slightly disoriented from being that close to Styles’ magnetic shenanigans but was shaking it off well enough even after taking a moment to hold her head under her large mitre. “As you know, the tragedy that befell Smokey Gardens fell to the rest of the city to come together and help our fellow man. Truly, we were being smiled on that day. The Church can offer little in the ways of material comforts, but we keep the soul of this city alive. To that end, I would like to thank the rest of the council for helping with a grand new project. Mayor Lowell will tell you all about it. Rest assured our acolytes and priests are working tirelessly to aid the efforts. As ever, the Consecration’s doors are open to all who seek comfort and guidance without the need for membership or the pressure to purchase anything. We hope to continue to set a shining example moving forward.”

Tyrael Cheshire: CEO of Cheshire Financial Group
“Greetings. Last year’s financing of incoming foreign business has shown quite a lot of success despite some... difficulties at several of the events. However, I can assure you that the matters are still being looked into and I would like to personally extend my thanks to all the bounty hunters who helped prevent catastrophe at last year’s charity gathering. In light of this, I have extended a sizable portion of funding to a introductory training program for up and coming bounty hunters taught by some of the best in the field. As a former bounty hunter myself, I will be among those who will take on a small handful of students personally. As you know, I have always valued the potential of the next generation. This will come at no charge to you, but do understand that the slots will be few and quite in demand. We cannot guarantee entry for everyone. Please, send your inquiries to my business office.”

Flavian Lowell: Mayor of Apricus City
“Let’s hear it for the council, ladies and gentlemen!” The Mayor waited for any possible applause to die down. “Now I’m sure you’re all ready to get on with the rest of the festivities but we have one more announcement to make! As you may have seen there’s a new building being constructed in Capitol Square, right next to the main rail station. That, my good people, is an answer to the natural disasters that have hit us so recently. Every single member of the council pitched in to make it happen. May I present the opening of the Apricus City Home of Rebuilding- a council-funded shelter for victims of tragedy. Here people can stay in a safe place while they find new homes, jobs, or a place to rest should the unthinkable befall them or their loved ones. We hope to expand this to other public service as well. That said! The city is looking for volunteers and the council’s various organizations are hiring to manage its various aspects. Remember, this will be run largely by donation and while the council has pitched a substantial amount, we will be giving you, the people, and opportunity to also contribute. For any amount you donate to the shelter, you’ll receive some discounts and coupons for multiple businesses who have contributed. We hope this becomes a major stepping stone in helping our fellow citizens.
“Words cannot adequately describe how proud I am of every single one of you. It is the privilege of a lifetime to be your mayor. Now let’s ring in this Revolution Day!”

“They weren’t stupid, either. Nothing’s been taken from us. I think they purposefully avoided the actual detectives in the crowd. Sneaky bastard.”

“Olivier’s gone to talk with the council members. If we want to help, we should talk to security. I’ll go find who I can. Keep an eye on things here for anything suspicious.”

He had the worst luck didn’t he? He had thought he timed his schedule where no one else would be in the bathing area, clearly he miscalculated somewhere seeing as he had company. “Hello.” He greeted back suddenly more conscious of the situation, at least she was screaming at him to leave. “...if you don’t mind, pardon the intrusion...” The relaxation tub was probably his favorite part about the facility, he was willing to endure the situation instead of being in a crowded tub with his teammates. He kept his towel around his waist until he was fully submerged in the water.

The Ciar Gala event will start tonight. It’s intended to be a weekend long event. Feel free to mingle with anyone involved. Since we already had one of these, the tag for this one is “Ciar Gala 2″. So try and run with that.

Mayor Lowell Presents: Apricus University Observatory
“Greetings, Apricus City! I’m Mayor Lowell giving you this week’s presentation-” The mayor stretches out his arms as the camera pans up to a field of stars and planets. “FROM SPAAAAAACE!”
The camera slides back down to him, showing off the equipment behind him. “Well, sort of. This is the Apricus University Observatory. Here students and scientists alike study the stars, planets, and vast reaches of the cosmos. The actual equipment here is... delicate and complicated to say the least.” Mayor Lowell walks over to a massive telescope surrounded by control instruments and various floating screens. “Take this telescope for instance. It’s powerful enough to look far into space, almost to the edge of the solar system. though things do start to get a bit small again half-way through. However, this is one of the most sophisticated pieces of technology at the university’s disposal and all these instruments keep it running. But don’t take my word for it, I’ve brought along someone who can explain this a bit better. Professor Menril, take it away.”
“Thank you, Mr. Mayor.” The edit crawler on the bottom of the broadcast read ‘Dr. Shani Menril, School of Technology’. “The observatory as it currently stands has been in operation for about thirty years after the completion of the Rogerson Telescope. We have been able to chart stars and planets more efficiently ever since. For those hoping for practical applications of this- understand that celestial navigation is how our ancestors saw the world and today we use it to assist in tracking satellites that give the city its GPS and internet access. All of these are systems I have had a personal hand in designing and improving. We eventually hope to do a manned mission that isn’t simply satellite repair, but equipment and training will take some time. This is only a brief explanation of the purpose of the observatory so I hope you will come and listen to the open lectures and presentations we have.”
“Thank you, Professor. I do hope I’ve at least piqued the interest of a few intrepid souls who want to learn more about the cosmos. Let’s give a bit thanks to our University once again being at the forefront of improving our lives with their new discoveries. As always, I’m Mayor Lowell and this has been Mayor Lowell Presents. See you all next time!”

Mayor Lowell Presents: Apricus Docks
“Hello again, Apricus City! Today’s tour of the city will be a sort of double feature, but also... not.” The mayor stands on a large barge overlooking the city from the waterfront. Behind him is a huge assortment of ships big and small at the massive harbor of the north docks.
“For those of you who aren’t aware there are technically two docking districts in the city on each side of Aurora Vale- both of which are run by Larsen’s Mariner Services. Each of them serves a specific function to the maritime economy and defense of the city and it’s something Hector and his Marines take quite seriously. We’ll go over both of them today as we cruise down the coast of the city.”
“As you can see, we’re at the Upper Docks. This is the bustling business center of the Docks and where Larsen’s Mariner services has their headquarters. It’s home to quite a lot of the coast’s more well known sights as well, several of which we’ve covered here before! But let’s talk more of the district’s function.”
“The Upper Docks contains the base of our coast’s most prominent industry- seafood. Fishermen bring their hauls to docks here to have their food inspected, graded, and sold. You can find plenty of fresh fisheries and restaurants here. Almost all fish found throughout the city comes through this place and you can watch many a hard-working man and woman here plying their trade.”
“In addition, at the center of the Upper Docks we’re passing now we can see a parade of warships behind me. We’re now entering the waters of the military base that serve as Apricus’s navy. You may think I’m revealing a major security secret here but rest assured, the Marines have more than enough gumption and ability to handle any threats that come our way. The most common of course are pirates and sea monsters. But we’ll talk about that when I finally discuss the Marines themselves in another presentation.”
“Let’s make our way further south and you can start to see shipyards and workers repairing and building both military and fishing vessels as well as exploratory ships. Larsen’s Mariner Services also partners with Apricus University and some of these ships will be sent to the Univeristy’s Aquatic Research Center offshore. The deep can hold just as much value as the surface of the water I’m told.”
“While we wait for our tour to continue, we’re entering Aurora Vale again. Here we’ll drift between the lit up coastline and several of the major islands near us. It’s certainly a sight, but not what we’re here for, sadly. Let’s make a note to come back to explore the pier out here sometime.”
After a short cut, the scenery changes and the mayor is now drifting behind a series of massive containers and other ships in a slightly dirtier looking set of docks that stretch the horizon behind him. “Here we are, the Lower Docks. It may not look as impressive but it’s vitally important. These docks have two primary functions- shipping and trade. The rivers that come down from the mountains empty out here so the Lower Docks serve as a distribution hub for goods that come from overseas. They’re brought here and examined by our city’s customs office. These containers behind me are a variety of imports and exports that have been exploding in use ever since the city opened up its borders to visitors in full. This is often the first place a new arrival to Apricus City will see depending on the price of their voyage. Docking fees here are quite lower than in the Upper Docks, after all. So long as you don’t mind being surrounded by shipping containers you’ll find cheap passage. Sadly there aren’t nearly as many tourist attractions here but easy access to Delta Town means those who wish can see some of the oldest buildings in the city in no time!”
“I’ve hope I’ve given you all a good overview of what to expect in the Docks and what they offer the city. Mayor Lowell Presents: Apricus University
“Hello again, citizens of Apricus City! Today I wanted to take you down a tour of one of the city’s major districts. As you might have noticed by the overwhelming seas of young people and the student organizations, we’re at the University!” The mayor spreads his arms to a massive circular courtyard with various buildings far off into the distance. “We’re starting here at the student center- an enormous building that comprises of the university’s food court, student rooms, auditoriums, administrative offices, and the school’s famous aquarium where Aristotle, the school mascot lives. This is the heart of university activity for the student body and there courtyard never has any shortage of student lead organizations and even small businesses like food trucks and artist stalls. The University’s district status comes from just how industrious the students here are and turned the school into their own thriving fully fledged community! But this is only the beginning. Let’s move on, shall we?”
The camera cuts to a lavish garden, one recently rebuilt. “This is the Univeristy Gardens... one of the largest natural enclaves in the eastern half of the city. It acts as natural sanctuary for many of the local natural flora and the college of natural sciences surrounds it. This is another popular destination for students who want to get away from the bustle of city life and find somewhere more natural to relax in.”
“You may have also noticed several other buildings surrounding the sprawling campus. These are the colleges that students who seek to find their profession will go to. Everything from social work, to astronomy, to history, to physics, and anything else you can name is offered here and any major subjects offered commonly have their own buildings. It’s not uncommon for jobs in other districts to require a degree from the University to apply and there’s multiple grants and partnerships with the likes of Cheshire Financial, Ciar Industries, the Bureau, and the Union to help educate their new leaders and managers. Branch offices of those colleges can often be found in the relevant districts so not all students need to move to there to learn.”
“But of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the three major services the Univeristy offered the city at large. First is in the realm of education. The city’s primary schools are also run by the University and all teachers have to be licensed by them. This also extends to many libraries found throughout the city. Second is the hospitals. Medical training and facilities are University run and the Apricus City University Hospital on the campus itself is the largest and most advanced medical facility in the city. The last part of the University’s contributions to the city is in its most used one: the internet. Apricus University’s School of Technology is massive, to be sure, and it has to be in order to keep your aShines functioning! Dr. Shani Menril, the head of the college, is also the head administrator of the city’s entire network and Univeristy technicians keep us all connected to each other and the college’s massive public network of databases.”
“We all rely on the University every day of our lives whether we realize it or not. The power of eductation is truly something to behold. If you ever come to the University campus at any point, I personally recommend that aquarium. Aristotle does love visitors! And be sure to thank the doctors, technicians, and teachers that make all our lives better. I’m Mayor Lowell and this has been Mayor Lowell Presents!”

For You, the City
Mayor Lowell stood at the administration building, looking out at the city. The sheer shame he felt knowing it was in enemy hands weighed. “How can I possibly call myself the leader of this city if I am not the first one to take action when it’s in danger?” He takes a few steps forward and walks into the central plaza- a massive atrium easily capable of holding hundreds of people.
“You know...” He says aloud, letting his footsteps clack on the ground, “I hoped it would never have come to this...”
He stepped up to the microphone and pressed the emergency declaration button, turning a key that he hoped would get past Hades’s interference. “People of Apricus! I know you are fighting hard. I know you are fighting for your lives! I see you! I hear you! Know that! Know that I believe in you!”
He hangs his head. “But belief isn’t enough... is it? I know what some of you are thinking. I should not be hiding in the administration building- not when even the council is out there. You’re right.” He pans the camera to the large atrium where several hundred copies of Mayor Lowell stood. The real one at the center put on a helmet and sat in a massive chair strapped to several computers.
Anyone who could see one of the large train rails form their location would see them start to glow with blue light. That same light was coming from the doubles of the mayor. As they moved, they started to form hard light train cars around them that zoomed toward the train, all creating their own tracks to follow and hitching themselves to the rail at unbelievable speed.
“Animatronics to be sure, but I will be pushing myself to the limit to control them all at once. You are not alone in this, my citizens! It is my duty, no, my pleasure and honor to fight alongside you.”
As the illusory trains carrying the doubles detached from the rail, they rocketed toward every part of the city where fighting was happening or people needed rescue.

Mayor Lowell Present: PWSB Priority Bounties
Mayor Lowell is standing inside of a Bureau investigation room with a large screen behind him. Several uniformed officers are going about their business. “Hello, Apricus City! I’m here at the central headquarters of the Post-War Security Bureau. As you know the bounty system is the core of criminal justice in Apricus. While bounties may be privately posted through the Bounty Hunters’ Association, the city’s law enforcement also make use of this system to focus on the city’s more dangerous aspects; and they don’t get much more dangerous than the priority bounties!”
“For those who don’t know, priority bounties are any bounties listed by the Bureau for dangerous of criminals for whom capture is of the utmost urgency. All bounties listed here can be collected following the capture, or in some cases proof of executing, the offending party. Only the heinous and dangerous of criminals make it to this list. Publicly listed bounties may have higher or lower totals than the Bureau’s system for the same crimes but be advised they may not be accurate in the assessment of how dangerous a person is as opposed to the Bureau’s rankings. You may also call the Bureau bounty office to leave tips for the capture of criminals. If this leads to an arrest there is an award involved. However, prank calling the line will result in civil fines.”
The Mayor moves to the side to show a list of names and bounty totals. “These are the names currently listed by the Bureau as being priority bounties in order.”
Hades: A highly dangerous terrorist wanted for the murders of Apricus City officials and workers in multiple districts, inciting public panic, and conspiracy against the Council. Bounty rewards will vary on whether or not he is captured alive or dead. He is known to have associates going by the code names Loki, Hermes, and Eris. Any credible information will be met with a direct credit reward.
The Dark Angel: Wanted for serial murder. Calling cards and sightings reveal the culprit may be of former Bureau origin but nothing else has been confirmed at this time. Witnesses report a massive figure sometimes seen in a white cloak. There is no known pattern in the deaths so far. They are also suspected in the disappearance of a resident of Cherry Hills.
<A photo of a figure in a blank mask that seems to swirl multiple colors>: Presumed to be the ringleader of an underground trafficking ring and red room bloodsport arena that broadcasts to darknet sites that vanish as soon as they catch up. Bureau records of what few broadcasts it managed to locate are gruesome and sealed in police archives but they are believed to be genuine. Any information regarding their identity and veracity of these broadcasts is highly desired.
The Gentlemen Thief: Wanted for multiple counts of grand theft. His most recent stunt was the robbery at the Cheshire Charity Ball. Known for leaving behind crudely drawn replacements of stolen materials and seems to prefer paintings and art.

Mayor Lowell Presents: Civil Solutions in Apricus
“Greetings Apricus City! I’m Mayor Lowell and today we’re going to be talking about the law. The bounty system is all well and good for criminal conduct but what happens when citizens have disputes that don’t require something quite that drastic? Well as it so happens each district as its own method for solving disputes between citizens. Perhaps a refresher is in order, especially for all our newcomers here. In cases where there’s cross district conflict, there’s usually some degree of special negotiations involved after the fact, but the common practice is to defer to the method of the district an argument started in.”
“Let’s begin with Capitol Square itself. The district has no actual residents but those who wish to take a civil argument up with the city as a whole may file a complaint or request at the city administration building. I have a team specifically for these things and I assure you there is no “accepted” tray conveniently above a paper shredder. You can submit electronically anyway. From there things go to a review board for consideration.”
“Next up we’ll discuss Aurora Vale. Ciar Industries has a privatized court system wherein one hires a judge to hear their case where they decide the outcome based on civic arguments. Those fees may be lessened or waived if one consents to having their trial aired for one of their legal-focused television shows.”
“Both the Bureau and the Marines have a similar military tribunal system. If a civic case must be heard in the Guardian District or the Docks, it goes to a tribunal hearing. Both districts tend to err on the side of guilty until proven innocent, however- depending on your rank.”
“The University goes through an ombudsman to settle their disputes and this goes double if it’s a problem between a student and a teacher. Other matters may be sent to an elected school board of individual colleges wherein they discuss a report brought to their attention.”
“Solis Heights may seem like it would be confusing seeing as two major city players call the district home, but it’s actually quite simple. Civil disputes are commonly brought before Merek’s temple for moral judgement, usually in the form of a high ranking Potentialist asking both sides questions about their arguments. The Cheshires appear to have simply allowed this to be the norm of the district and even have their own questioner on their payroll.”
“Conversely, the Consecration has a similar but more elaborate method for disputes in Delta Town. Disputes are framed as a theological argument. A priest oversees the hearing and both sides must make a faith-based reasoning for their actions. However, instead of focusing on who was right or at fault, the Consecration focuses their problem solving on which side they feel was acting with the most faithful religious morals. Results can be surprising!”
“The Union of Smokey Gardens handles their disputes exactly as advertised. Disputes are brought to the workers’ union representative to files a complaint with the higher ups. This escalates until a resolution is reached. By default burden of proof is always placed on the higher levels of the hierarchy. Not even Mr. Styles himself is immune to this and has been the defendant in a Union hearing more than once by sheer virtue of running it.”
“Lastly, let’s talk about some of the... stranger cases. The Diamond District settles its disputes with business. Usually a mediator is asked to work out negotiations between parties and usually someone winds up owing someone else some degree of money or work as compensation. Workers are even allowed to try and gamble their debt down at one of the district’s many casinos. Of course, this means that debt can also increase.”
“The Bounty Hunters’ Association of Evergreen Basin don’t really have a centralized method of problem solving and simply expect afflicted parties to solve their problems on their own. If not well... to the bounty board it goes.”
“And finally we have Cherry Hills who also have no conflict resolution method because they don’t have any. The tight knit community of Cherry Hills believes in nipping conflict in the bud before it becomes a problem and instead uses talks and neighborly agreements before anything boils over. Mrs. Bell has gotten this down to a science I’m told. Anyway, I hope this has been an informative introduction on how each of the districts settle civic disputes in Apricus City. Hopefully you’ll never find youself on the end of these, though! I’m Mayor Lowell and this has been Mayor Lowell Presents!”

Cheshire Charity Ball: Missing
Kimberley stumbled through the crowd, crying and shoving people out of the way. “Siiiiiiiiiiis!” She plowed into Charlotte, clutching her jacket.
“What are you doing, Kimberley!? We are very busy-”
“Listen to me! It’s gone! GONE! Mom’s necklace!”
“You had better not lost them! They can’t just be gone.” Charlotte turned to a security officer holding up a screen who had approached. It showed stills of a figure who was clearly holding several belongings but beyond that, nothing was easy to determine.
“Miss Montague. You might want to see this. Several guests are reporting missing belongings- and it appears something went missing from the auction gallery. They left a calling card- the Gentleman Thief came and went during Mr. Cheshire’s match.”
“GIVE ME THOSE CAMERAS! SCOUR EVERYTHING!”

Cheshire Charity Ball: Interruption
“Announcing Resource Workers United Union President Da-.”
Styles blew past the announcer and walked into the ballroom and examined the banquet. He didn’t bother dressing in any formal outfit in clear violation of the dress code. “Yeah, this is about what I thought. Fresh fruits, prime meats, cakes baked with all the best stuff our farms can make.”
“You’re welcome by the way!” He shouted into the crowd. The piano kept going despite a momentary glare from Cassandra as if ignoring him would make him go away. “Yeah yeah, I get it, you all get to pretend you’re giving a bunch of money to people in need while eating like kings and waltzing at a resort. We all know the routine.”
Tyrael moved into motion immediately, stopping just a few feet from the other councilman. “What is the meaning of this?” He asks quietly.
“The meaning?” Styles didn’t bother lowering his voice in kind. “Besides giving your caviar sucking self-congratulatory circle jerk a reality check? Ever since Hades showed up you’ve been acting like nothing’s wrong. Half the council has boys in the tunnels bleeding to keep things under control and you won’t even acknowledge it! There a reason for that!? Maybe a Baskerville related reason!?”
“My wife has nothing to do with this and you have no right to barge in here and cause a scene, Damien Styles. Leave before I have security throw you out.”
“Oh I’d love to see them try. Fine, you won’t tell me what you’re up to I’m just going to have to beat it out of you. You’ve got an arena here, right? Let’s take this there. You can even have your little betting pool in on it.”
Styles turns to the crowd and sneers. “Ladies and gentlemen you’re in luck! I would like to apologize for my sudden appearance by making an announcement! We’ve repaired the damage to the building after a lot of negotiations about who was responsible and we can now positively say that the Cheshire Charity Ball will be held from October 1st through the 3rd. Everyone who purchased a ticket will be given a 100 credit voucher for one event of their choice at the ball or the attached vendors. Yes, this also means suit and dress rental.”
