He needed to talk to someone else, someone who understood their parent abandoning them and would know what to say to help him make sense of the day.
Jeff sighed as he got his phone from his back pocket, leaning back in his seat after. He hoped she still wasn’t busy at Shirley’s, but it was Thanksgiving and Pierce was with her, so either way an escape would probably be welcome, at least he hoped. He went to the speed dial, to one of the numbers on the top.
She picked up on the second ring.

Just the sight of her name on his lock screen is enough to make Jeff shift into an upright position on the sofa. Of course, it isn’t like they never talk. Sure, it’s been awhile, but she’s been busy with her career, and then there’s the time difference, of course…
Jeff is still staring at the lock screen on his phone, when it abruptly goes dark as it automatically shuts off. However, before he can thumb the screen back on, it vibrates in his hand and lights up once again and, instantly, his heart begins to pound in his chest.
