Replay ch. 3

Rayla got up at seven, eyes heavy from the lack of sleep last night. “Noooo. UGH.” She turned to angrily glare at her alarm that had interrupted her rain noises. Aberdeen wasn’t the rainiest place in the world, but the sound of a rain storm always helped put her to sleep. Her mum and da always joked she was named ‘Rayla’ because she was born right when the moon shone through a stormy night.

Rayla went through her emails quickly, making a note in her phone to call both sets of her parents this weekend. She missed the days in Scotland when Runaan would speak French with her and talk cheese or helping Ethari in his jewelry business. Runaan ran the books while Ethari ran the artistic side, his work with metal and jewel placement both tasteful and modern while taking classic elements from Celtic art.

Her parents had yet to retire from being bodyguards, but they regaled her with stories of Africa and Asia and Australia, how kind people were, the different foods and cultures. Sometimes, she wished she could have grown up going with them. Other times, she knew they had made the right choice leaving her with Runaan and Ethari. They wouldn’t have had much time for her anyways.

Sighing, she rolled out of bed. She had a breakfast date with Corvus before she had to be at the office. God. She hated those pricks sometimes; a lot of old money lived in that office. She had thought she was leaving classism behind when she did her study abroad in the States for her law degree. Apparently, America just hid their classism really well instead of openly displaying it like they did back in the UK.

She lived well, was paid well, did better than anyone had expected her to do, probably. She had been more focused on athletics as a kid, leading Runaan to force her into ballet (‘you already know some French. It’s perfect!’), Ethari insisting on Irish step dance (‘Lain’s mother was Irish. It’s a world wide sensation, Rayla!’), and her own parents signing her up for kickboxing when she was in high school during their vacation from work. Her teachers had been frustrated that she was smart but didn’t ‘apply herself’ whatever that meant. She got good grades, did better in college, got into law school in another country, and passed the bar. She could apply herself just fine. She just liked to be active.

Rayla sighed as she stepped into the hot water of her shower. She had made a good choice buying this shower head. Slowly, she felt the burn that had started last night begin to build back up again. Green eyes entered her mind again, as well as a voice that she would love to hear calling her name out while she rode him. ‘Calm down, Rayla.’ She couldn’t meet Corvus horny. Rayla sighed, putting her forehead against the shower wall before starting to massage her breast. She tried to imagine it was Callum’s hand stroking her, dipping down to touch between her thighs where she ached.

Would his hands be soft or rough? There hadn’t been any obvious calluses when she had shaken his hand at the cheese shop. She moaned, dipping her fingers into her wet heat. Her thighs rubbed together as she tried to chase that elusive release. She didn’t have time for this. The more she tried to speed up, the more it just wasn’t happening. Growling in frustration, she tried to play with her clit, breathing deeply as she finally found a rhythm that was working. Rayla bit her bottom lip and sighed as she came, inwardly crowing with satisfaction. There was no worse start to a day than being unable to cum after a wet dream or being too horny to function.

She washed and dried off, stretching her muscles before dressing. The green pantsuit and black top showed off her toned figure without drawing too much attention to any one place. Her heels made her even taller and, hopefully, a little intimidating to jerky clients or coworkers. She grabbed her purse and went out the door. When she finally made it to her car, she leaned her head on the steering wheel. Had she really started her day off by masturbating to a guy she met YESERDAY?

She shook her head, driving off until she made it to the little café she and Corvus frequented. Corvus also worked in the same building, but for a different law office, specifically divorce. Rayla had no idea how he did it, but someone had to. She saw Corvus at their usual table, smiling at something on his phone. “Your boyfriend sent you a naughty text?”

Corvus smirked back up at her. “Nope. Just something about one of my latest clients. Well, their soon-to-be-ex.”

“Good news or bad news?”

“Well, considering it’s a custody case, it’s good for my client.”

“Abuse?” Rayla frowned.

“I would not be smirking if that was the case. No. Apparently, the ex has been mismanaging the children’s money. Lying about putting it in a back account for them and spending it on gambling debts.”

“You don’t call that abuse?” Rayla smiled up at the waiter who came over, ordering an earl grey, a coffee to go, and an omelet.

“Thank you,” Corvus nodded to the waiter. “I do, personally, but everyone views that differently. The children were never struck, no record of emotional, mental, or oral abuse. It seemed like it was going to go 50-50 custody, which tends to be the ideal situation, but my client was concerned about the gambling problem.”

“So best case scenario, gambler’s anonymous and supervised visits eventually leading to 50-50 custody?”

“Best case scenario. Probably won’t happen, but we can all hope.”

Rayla shook her head. “I don’t know how you do it. I didn’t do criminal law or divorce law because I wasn’t sure I could handle seeing evidence of child abuse all day.”

“It’s a lot. We try to spread those cases around as much as we can, because it gets to be too much when it’s all you see. When police reports come into play, it’s even worse.” Rayla nodded. “While you work for old money. Tell me, how’s Kasef doing?”

“Hitting on me, again. Got upset when I told him off for glaring at a guy in a cheese shop for asking me a question.”

“He comes down to our office on his breaks and hits on half the women there.”

“Believe me, I know. His father gets really upset about it.”

“How is Mr. Ahling?”

“Still insisting we call him ‘Mr. Ahling’ and not the proper ‘Mr. Patel.’ His health is starting to go downhill, so we’re hoping his daughter graduates soon and can start to learn how to take over the office.”

Corvus shook his head, smiling at the waiter with her when they brought their food. “Thank you. I’m telling you, join our office. You could be really good at gathering information.”

“Thank you, but, no thanks. I grew up believing in true love with both sets of my parents. I’d like to continue believing in it.”

“You still believe in love. I love my boyfriend so much we’re moving in together.”

“Well, congratulations to you both. You moving in to his apartment or is he moving into your’s?”

“Mine’s bigger and closer to both our jobs.”

They talked work for a few more minutes, keeping an eye on the time. Rayla sighed as she looked at Corvus. “I’ve got a favor to ask.”

“My hairdresser would love to do your hair. Those layers are cute, but maybe you need a new look.”

“Ha ha. My hair��s fine, thanks. You remember me mentioning a guy in the cheese shop?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, he asked to draw me. He said it’s cool that I brought a friend and I would like to bring you. I don’t really have any other friends in the city.” She finished her tea, opening the lid of her coffee to put some cream in.

“He seem legit?”

“I saw his art. He also runs a YouTube channel with his friends and little brother?”

“What’s his name?”

“Callum Evans.”

“Katolis Squad!” Corvus smiled, clapping his hands together.

“You know them?”

“Of course. They do a lot of food stuff. I found this café because of one of their videos. Also, my boyfriend’s a baker, remember? Ezran and Claudia do a series on baking and sweets and he likes to watch them. Callum Evans is also kind of known in the art scene in town and I’ve met his aunt a few times. Lovely lady, so’s her wife.”

“Huh. Apparently, I’m out of it.”

“You just arrived in Katolis last year. I grew up here. You remember my boyfriend’s beignets you liked so much?”

“Those were delicious.”

“Ezran’s recipe. His grandmother’s friend was from Louisiana and she taught him how to make them like it’s done in the French-Quarter.”

“Huh. So, you’ll come with me?”

“Sure. Callum Evans seems harmless, but since he already approved it, might as well take advantage.”

“Agreed. I can take care of myself, but, you never know.”

“Where’s it going to be?”

“At his house. He said he has an art studio there. At least, that’s what he implied. I’m waiting for a text from him to iron out the details.”

“Maybe he’ll ask to draw you nude?” Rayla flushed red at that, looking down at her almost finished breakfast. “Oh? Something you want to share with the class? A reason you were distracted during kickboxing last night, perhaps?”

Rayla glared up at him, taking a few harsh bites of her omelet. She swallowed, keeping eye contact with him. “He’s cute, I’m single, that’s it.”

“He’s single.” Rayla paused. “He broke-up with his last girlfriend months ago. She made a big Instagram post about it, saying they wanted to focus on their careers. Which was weird because no one even knew they were in a relationship.”

“So, he’s probably used to people trying to use him for fame.”

“Most likely. He keeps to himself.”

“I saw that when I went digging online. His step-father’s the governor and his mother was in the military for a few years, rising through the ranks very quickly.”

“Yeah. They try to keep their channel separate from all that, though. People are always asking them questions about it and they’ll either ignore it or say they aren’t a mouthpiece for Harrow Williams.”

“Fair. I’ll text you the details. I’ve got my coffee, gotta go.” Rayla put a $20 on the table and waved good-bye to Corvus, leaving to head to the office. Well, this just got even more interesting, didn’t it?

Callum rubbed his eyes as he looked up at the ceiling. All night, he had dreamed of Rayla. Her white hair down and around bare shoulders, purple eyes starting deep into his. ‘Come on, Callum. Make me feel good.’ He tossed and turned in his bed, suddenly thankful for the fact he lived alone. His cock was at attention and it was not going to be going down any time soon. Rolling out of bed, he took his sleep clothes off as he made his was to his shower. He winced at the cold water, but sighing in relief as his erection went down. He had no time to rub one out. He was already running late for his meeting with Ezran, Soren, and Claudia. They had to go over whether or not to actually hire a crew now that their channel had six million subscribers.

It would be a smart move. Claudia’s home-made beauty series was getting a lot of attention, as were her and Ez’s baking series. Soren and Ezran’s sub channel and Twitch channel was getting a lot of attention in the video game community for their let’s plays and commentary. Even Callum’s art sub channel was getting more and more attention. He was just worried about going bigger because, if they did, what if drama followed? It had been a PR nightmare when his ex-girlfriend had posted on Instagram about going their separate ways for their careers. Callum had asked her to keep it between them because he wanted to keep his personal life and his YouTube life separate. She had apparently felt that, after they broke-up, what he wanted didn’t matter.

As he quickly ate breakfast, he couldn’t get the idea of Rayla from his dreams or of her in a forest out of his head. Those eyes haunted his every though. ‘She’s a freaking fae. That must be it.’ Callum rubbed his eyes again, sighing. He sent a quick text to Rayla asking if she would be alright with her modeling for him in the woods outside of town. She would probably say ‘no’, but Callum needed to get this image out of his head and out of his system. He had just met her and she was distracting him already. Still, Callum wasn’t so sure he could ever get someone like her out of his system. Even if they had sex a week straight, he would probably still crave her. ‘Stop getting ahead of yourself, Callum. She’s probably in a relationship, you just want to draw her, and you have other things to focus on right now.’

All day, as the group discussed the benefits to do YouTube full-time, barring Ezran because he was still in college, a Scottish accent and a pair of soft eyes stayed in the back of his mind. Beckoning him to find her and take her under a waterfall in the forest. Would she scratch and like it rough or did she like to go soft and slow, like a wave?

Ezran snapped his fingers in his face. “Callum, focus.”

“Right. So, I think taking a step forward is a good idea….” He didn’t have time to be thinking about faeries in suits from Scotland.

Flora Azalea Devereaux was born in New Orleans to Owen and Magnolia Devereaux, on May 23rd. The second child of four kids and certainly the one that had the biggest dream. She wanted to be a country star, she wanted to share her gift with the world. It wasn’t her only dream, she also wanted true love. She imagined her prince coming along and they would share love’s first kiss, she wanted love and prayed for it. However, when you grew up in a church like Precious Glory Ministry. Love and dreams weren’t high on the list, not in the eyes of Pastor Gregory Stone. Pastor Stone considered himself God’s prophet and interpreter of god’s will.

The parishioners had roles and those roles were god’s command. Men worked in the fields, built homes, and took wives. The women served the men by cooking, cleaning, and bearing their children. Pastor Stone was allowed to sleep with any wife he wished, no questions asked. The children treated him as a second father and follow his commands without question. As the church grew, Pastor Stone moved them to bigger land in the middle of nowhere- away from prying eyes.

People started to pull away from the ministry, families leaving in the night and others told to leave and never come back. Owen and Magnolia were planning to leave for years, saving money, hoarding provisions, and planning their escape. It was Pastor Stone’s interest in Flora and Rose that finally set things in motion. Flora was fourteen and Pastor Stone turned his attention towards her particularly. Flora felt very uncomfortable with his advances but knew if Pastor Stone wouldn’t take no for an answer. His words, “But God wants me to have you,” were burned in her brain. The night before Pastor Stone took Flora as his new wife, The Devereaux’s fled and left no trace.

Shreveport, Louisiana. A small farmhouse with just enough lands for a family to build a life. It took some time but The Devereaux found a new church to call home. Flora’s life change drastically, she finally had a chance to follow her dreams. She started to sing in the church choir and one of the churchgoers happen to be in the country music business. He told her about a band he was putting together and they needed a lead singer. They were looking for a younger sound and Flora had what they were looking for. When they hit the road, Magnolia tagged along and took Rosie with her. She wanted to spend some time with the band and make sure Flora felt comfortable. A few months in she headed back home and left Flora in the new chaperone's hands.

Paul and Avery became her best friends, they were a couple years older and treated her like a kid sister. They were extra protective of her, once they realize just how innocent she truly was. “You never snuck a drink, not even once?” Avery asked in disbelief. Flora explained that she didn’t lie, cheat, steal, or do anything the lord frowned upon. She believed in preserving her body with prayer and being optimistic about the people around her, “Oh Paulie we have so much work to do.” Flora stood her ground for some time but decided the Lord would forgive her. She prayed about it and decided to try drinking and smoking, which was the start of it all.

After a year, the band finally had a huge break. Baby Girl broke charts and thrust the band into the public eye. Their first huge event was a country music festival in Louisiana, Flora was excited because that meant her family could come and see the band perform. The set was a hit and Flora met many people but only one stuck, a man by the name of Russell Fabray. He was charming, handsome, and older. They spent the whole after party talking before slipping away. Against her better judgment, she slept with Russell that night, behind the garden. Russell assured her that everything would be alright. “We’re going to marry and no one has to know.” And she believed him.

During their first tour, Russell would come out to meet her. They would spend every minute together between rehearsals. When Flora found out she was pregnant, she called Russell and that is when he told her about Judy and his family. Flora was pissed and she avoided him for a while but he worked his way back in. He surprised her on tour one night and they decided to continue seeing each other.

Flora bought the place next to her parent’s house, wanting to be close once the twins were born. She continued to tour while pregnant and decided to distance herself from the party scene. The withdrawals were hard and she came clean to her family, telling them about her drinking and drug problem. Marmee helped her get clean and went with her on the remainder of her tour. A lot of arguing but Marmee held strong and Flora stayed clean, unlike her friend Avery who never slowed down. One night after a show, Avery went out to a party. Paul and Flora opted for sleep, “Sure, thank you for everything.”

The next morning, Paul and Flora got the news about Avery. After a night of partying she went back to her hotel room and overdosed. Before she took her life, she wrote down everything on her mind- which broke Paul and Flora both. Avery wrote a song for them and told them to go on and take a piece of her with them. The song was kept secret and Flora kept a copy with her as a reminder.

Sugarland took a long break, neither of them had much inspiration to continue. Flora got a chance to bond with her new family. Twins were hard work at home and she couldn’t imagine newborns on the road. Avery and Daniel Fabray, they were perfect in every way and Flora’s motherly instincts kicked in. She needed to keep them safe from the world- even if her own world crumbled around her. She got back into drugs and booze to cope, “You will not keep them on teet I hope.”

“I have a problem but I’m not stupid.” Flora had switched them both to formula, keeping her children safe and clean.

Three years they stayed away from the stage before coming back. Paul and Flora were both heavy into drugs and booze at this point, but it didn’t impact their ability to perform. They continued to write music, tour, and grow into superstars.

It was hard being a mom on the road with a boyfriend who didn’t seem to care enough. He refused to divorce his wife and Flora was tired of fighting, so, she just used him for sex. This is how they ended up with a third child and more obligations that attached them. They had full-on fistfights when both were drunk and on the sauce, moments that Flora was not proud of. She knew her kids saw it and it affected them a lot but Flora is proud to say she never once hit her children. Russell on the other hand did and that is when she beat the living snot out of him.

One night the fighting got worse and the police were called. Flora and Russell were both arrested and Marmee kept them in there. She took care of the kids and bailed them out in the morning, and that is when Flora decided to get clean and kick his sorry ass to the curb.

This meant Sugarland was taking another break. Paul got married, got sober, and started his own family. Flora stayed in Louisiana, checked herself into rehab and got clean.

Two years later, Flora and Paul were back in the studio. She wrote ‘Stay’ and confessed all in an exclusive interview with the morning show. She laid it all out on the line and was transparent about everything, no scandal if you admitted to it. The secret had been well kept, the family knew about it but kept it hush-hush. Russell and Flora were always honest with the kids, they knew everything anyway. Hard not to when your parents fought about it all the time. After the interview hit, she suffered a lot of backlash but things turned out okay in the end.

Flora used religion to help her through, going back to church with new eyes. She hated what she had become and she had a lot of apologizing to do. She got her chance when Judy Fabray came to her door and invited her in. They talked a lot and bonded over Russell Fabray, “I take responsibility too, I knew about you and I kept seeing him.” Turned out that Judy knew about her too but said nothing, afraid of the shame it would bring.

Over the next few years, Russell continued to show up in her life. She had just relapsed and she was feeling needy and there he was. By this time he was divorced, so she didn’t feel horrible about jumping him. “Get out,” But he didn’t let him stay longer than the weekend, “The kids are coming home for vacation and I don’t want you near them.” Both of them had been snorting and shooting back drinks all day. So when Flora told Russell to leave he snapped and beat the hell out of her. While she came in and out of consciousness, he forced himself on her before running away. She laid on the floor for twelve hours before her daughter Avery found her and called for help.

Flora went back to rehab and this time she stayed clean. She was stronger and ready to live her life and it got better. Russell got a five-year sentence for his crimes, she wished it was longer but she’d take it. She could truly focus on her career now, clean, sober, and she could do it with a friend.

Paul had come back into her life and asked if they were ready to kick things off. “Baby, let’s do this.”

The pleas of false people mean nothing: Nier’s sound and enemy design carries a vital message.

(This Cannot Continue.)

For Nier/Taroverse Fans: (Skip this section if you’re not one of my tragic people (yet)):

This essay is primarily aimed at fans of Nier:Automata, or at least people interested in it. Or good game and sound design fans in general.

That said, I am primarily a Homestuck blog, and my perspective will include some comparisons to Homestuck. Don’t worry, nothing you won’t be able to follow-- even if you’ve literally never heard of Homestuck. In fact, you may come away from this with a new area of interest if you’ve exhausted Nier: Automata’s content and it left you hungry for a similar kind of story.

Even if you can’t imagine reading all of the comic proper, Hiveswap is coming out soon--possibly even this month, and I’m confident that game will make an excellent entry point into the series. I’m also running a youtube channel dedicated to explaining the comic to newcomers, along with potential lore links between the game and the comic, a la Dark Souls.

This piece will include some fairly big Homestuck spoilers, but frankly I don’t think it will matter either way--like with Nier: Automata itself, even spoiling the entire story couldn’t for a second make up for the actual execution.

In any case, No matter how much you’ve interacted with either Nier or Homestuck, you should be able to follow along and enjoy my points about both in this essay just fine.

I’m also going to avoid spoilers about Nier: Automata for the most part. However, I will be outlining the basic premise of the game and the thematic undercurrents that run through the entire story, so there are obviously some spoilers for the early game.

For Homestuck Fans: (Skip this section if you’re not one of my tragic people (yet)):

Yeah, I know I’m in the middle of a whole series of essays on Jake and that I kind of established a strong build up for the next essay. That one’s still coming--I might publish it tonight or maybe tomorrow. I’m excited about it!

But frankly, I kind of went through some really intense and borderline traumatic stuff in my personal life the last couple days. Not to do with Dirkjake or Homestuck at all--everyone who’s read my posts has thus far been terrifically kind to me, and the criticism and feedback I’ve received has been constructive in polishing and framing the next entry. I haven’t gotten a single anon hate message or anything. Thanks for that.

Just to do with some stuff irl, and writing is how I cope, and what happened made me want to write about this right the fuck now. I don’t feel like it can wait, no matter how much I love the subject of Jake English. Given how bombastic I am in those essays, that should give you an idea how strongly I feel about this subject.

I also think that understanding my views on Nier will illuminate how I approach and deconstruct Homestuck from an analytical perspective, and at the very least help you contextualize my ongoing writing on the comic. So this is relevant in the long term anyway, I’m just kind of chagrined I’m essentially pulling an analysis series intermission here. Fucking RIP, I have become my own comedy.

OK, so all that stuff out of the way: This essay will be split into four sub-sections, following a naming convention you should be able to recognize pretty quickly. I want to talk about the main antagonists in Nier: Automata:

The Machines, and why they’re currently my favorite antagonists in any video game ever.

Androids: Data for the uninitiated.

Nier: Automata is the latest entry in what is obscurely understood as the Drakengard-Nier franchise-- A series of action RPG Square-Enix games. Like Homestuck’s Andrew Hussie, most of the Taroverse saga (Drakengard 2 can stay in its corner) was conceptualized and directed by a notable Auteur figure: Yoko Taro- from whom the franchise gets its name. That’s not to say he’s solely responsible for the quality of his games, but simply that this is the reputation he’s earned in the fan community.

The reason I bring these auteurs up at all is that they both seem concerned with very similar ideas, leading to some peculiar similarities between their works. By bringing up the similarities between them, I feel I can better get at the core of what each series has to offer, and hopefully enticing fans of the one to consider the other.

Both series include explorations on the nature of existing as part of the Multiverse, along with multiple and sequential apocalyptic scenarios (both stories span over thousands if not millions of years and several civilizations). They both have questions to ask about the human condition, the nature of power and relationships, and humanity’s relationship with both reality and God.

If I had to describe my opinion on their philosophical differences in a paragraph, here’s what I’d say: Homestuck explores the concept of the multiverse while presenting a path for how to reach Heaven. The Taroverse explores how it can be used to imagine an endless, cyclical Hell.

If you’re not averse to spoilers or watching some pretty disturbing and depressing stuff and you want to see a fantastic case for this reading of the Taroverse, I suggest watching @pixievalkyrie ’s excellent breakdown of the entire franchise’s history. Fair warning: Trigger warnings for pretty much every kind of horrible abuse and degradation of life imaginable.

If you want to see my case backed up further for Homestuck, well-- there’s no earthly way to break Homestuck into smaller chunks like the Taroverse allows for, so I suppose you’ll just have to stay tuned to my work and read the comic yourself in the meantime. But Tex Talks does a very good job of explaining the nature of Homestuck’s setting in this video, and I think you’ll find similarities.

Now we can finally get to talking about the damn game.

Aliens: The Shape of the Enemy.

The premise of the game is as follows: After surviving about four distinct apocalyptic events and/or wars, thousands of years in the future, Earth faces an alien invasion. The invasion is successful and drives what’s left of humanity off the planet and onto the Moon.

The aliens do not fight themselves, however-- instead preferring to build a distinct industry of robotic weapons to fight their war for them: The Machines, our antagonists.

In response to the threat, humanity builds autonomous weapons of their own. Our Protagonists: The Androids. The three primary androids in our story are two combat androids, codenamed 2B and A2, and one scanner/support Android codenamed 9S. Here we see 2B, 9S, and A2--from top left to bottom right.

What’s immediately noticeable is how different Androids and Machines are.

Androids look and feel, for all intents and purposes, perfectly human. They talk fluently, consider complex problems, and clearly care for each other. They are expressly ordered not to show emotions, but they demonstrably have them anyway.

Machines, by comparison, look like crude imitations of people, toy-like and expressionless. Their voices are synthesized and robotic, their intonations and accents alien, making it difficult to discern emotion. Machines look mass-produced and cheaply customizable, with a variety of modifications pasted onto a crude and simple base design to fill out enemy types.

Androids are also ridiculously more competent and functional. This is a hack n’ slash game, and the Machines are direct analogs to, say, Heartless from Kingdom Hearts.

During gameplay, you’ll mow them down by the hundreds practically effortlessly, and though there are some bigger and tougher variants, most of them come across as borderline pathetic in their attempts to fight.

But both kinds of robots share a few similarities, one of which is this:

They are both connected to Post-Singularity Server networks that give them orders on how to fight their enemy.

For both Machines and Androids, these supercomputers are the structures actually calling the shots--they’re the sources of the series of orders that lead to a war that seems to span anywhere from centuries to millennia.

Neither Androids or Machines are calling the shots. But Androids have a design that makes it easy for them to signal feelings and complex internal realities, and Machines are designed to look very easy to dehumanize.

And this is a Taroverse game, so of course this depressing as hell setup is only the beginning of a long fall down.

Machines: Sounds that mean nothing.

(This cannot continue.) Early into the game, 2B and 9S begin to note more and more machines behaving erratically. More and more machines become non-aggressive, staring blankly into space or beginning to ramble about random subjects, wandering the land and modifying themselves based on their environments.

As a player, Your orders are clear: Machines are to be eliminated. These are also the orders of 2B and 9S, and the game has you continue carrying them out mostly unquestioned except through these little niblets of bizarre behavior from the machines. It doesn’t matter anyway--they’re the enemy, and you have to fight to win. This dynamic comes to its first climax in what will surely become one of the game’s most memorable scenes. 2B and 9S find their way to a small enclave of machines minding their own business, and what they find staggers their imaginations:

These robots are non-hostile. They’re rocking cradles while repeating “Child. Child.” Bumping into each other in suggestive ways while repeating “Love. Love.” and “Together. Forever.” All in those monotone, synthesized voices. Sounding so empty and wrong.

9S forms an interesting response to this. He says: “Don’t listen to them, 2B. They don’t have any feelings. They’re just imitating human speech.”

And it’s easy to come to that conclusion, right? It’s not like they emote. It’s not like they’re really able to. Essentially, 9S considers the Machines a threat, first and foremost--so when they act in a way that might engender empathy, he assumes it’s a trick or a ploy--an attempt to win the Androids over in order to hurt them.

It’s deceitful, but it’s also worse than that. It’s deceit by sheer virtue of it’s premise: Machines cannot possibly say something indicating emotions like love, desire, or care because Machines are not real beings. They aren’t people.

They’re tools and weapons and puppets to a supercomputer’s Agenda-- not autonomous entities who think and feel for themselves, at least as far as he’s concerned. That’s what he was taught by his intelligence server, and that server is really the only source of information in his life. It’s natural to rely on it.

Still, the machines don’t react to your presence and there’s nowhere to go. The only way forward is through violence. And once you provide it, they answer, with a lone Machine rising up and declaring:

I’ll get you for this.

As the fight continues, more and more machines make odd statements as they throw themselves at our protagonists, who demolish them by the dozens. Statements like: I love you! Kill! and Hatred! Pain! The robots suggest they feel what you’re doing. That they know what’s happening to them. Again, this war has gone on forever, and you--as the Androids--are almost absurdly more powerful than they are. 2B executes machines by the dozens constantly, across every corner of the world she can reach them in. The Machines surely know this as they watch their community die on her sword, one after another. They can likely feel exactly how weak they are.

But the voices that deliver their pain to the player remain stilted and alien--difficult to recognize. As the battle rises to it’s conclusion, however, one machine voices a thought that catches on. A short, clipped statement every machine can get behind. A meme. This Cannot Continue. The machines repeat it faster and faster, uniting under a common rallying cry. This tension builds and builds until suddenly, the Machines experience some sort of breakdown, straight up throwing a collective tantrum in (seemingly pantomime) desperation and repeating the words so fast and so often it barely sounds like a recognizable statement and sounds pure like pure cacophony.

Looking at this screenshot might convey some of the effect, but listening to the noise they’re collectively making is really something else. I’d link to the scene, but I don’t want to spoil what they do next. All I’ll say is that once they all gather around this common, desperate thought, they take action. When they do, the music shifts... And the game does something I’ve never seen before.

Here’s another area where Nier: Automata is similar to Homestuck. Both properties are downright famous for their use of leitmotif and attaching particular meanings to different musical motifs. (The developer of Undertale, Toby Fox, got his start as a Homestuck musician.) But even in this sense, what Nier: Automata pulls off is uniquely powerful. This song uses everything about itself to inform and flesh out the themes of the game. Once the robots do what they do next, we get an new rendition of the game’s main battle theme. A battle theme titled as Birth of a Wish.

Right from the title, the song is telling us something. Birth of a Wish (This cannot Continue) qualifies the robot’s collective statement as a wish, a desire. A wish for mercy? For deliverance? For justice, or peace? It’s hard to know. Probably all of the above. And the song itself tricks the player. Or at least, it tricked me. I should mention that Nier does one thing that Homestuck only really dabbled in: Vocal work. Specifically, vocal work in a made up language-- @pixievalkyrie again comes to my rescue with an excellent breakdown of Emi Evan’s downright staggering artistic achievement in her creation of a composite chaos language derived from most of the major languages on Earth.

Emi’s music is one of the major reasons I love this franchise, which is to say that when I first listened to this song, I did so actively hoping its vocal works wouldn’t make sense to me.

And I got what I wanted! The vocals, as usual, were smooth and fascinating but seemingly meaningless enough that I could use the music as a backdrop for my writing--I’ve been listening to this track pretty much nonstop for the last couple of weeks.

Which made it downright chilling when I realized, quite abruptly, that I was wrong. I have no idea if you noticed while listening to it or not--I genuinely don’t know if I’m an outlier here (pls send me asks with your experience!). But if you didn’t, then listen again: Most of the vocals for this song are written in plain English.

They consist of three words: This cannot continue.

The voices of the robots become part of the song. And the song itself is structured such that it informs the nature of their plight. The voices of the robots are barely musical--they are blank statements stated in synthesized monotone, hard to draw sentiment from.

But they are persistent, barging into the song as forcefully as they possibly can for as long as they can. Their voices don’t rest or stop willingly, seeming as though they’re almost forming a sort of counterbeat to the song’s main line. And when they stop, it is always because they are cut off, shut down and out of the song by the force of the Instruments.

Which is fitting, because instruments are what deny them in the game, too--after all, the Androids are simply tools. To the humans, to their server, and to you.

The experience of listening to them goes something like: This cannot continue this cannot continue this cannot continue this cannot-- Over and over again, until the song inevitably drowns them for its climaxes, only for their voices to return once again.

It’s a marvel of musical storytelling. But what makes it a diamond is what happens next. Later into the game, you come into contact with a village of Machines waving the white flag of surrender.

These machines inform the androids that they have disconnected from the information network, as have been many other groups of machines across the world. This is the cause for their erratic behavior--these machines now wish only to learn about the world and themselves and live in peace.

The music for this village is fundamentally different, to go with the information we gain:

Here the game tips it’s hand for good. I’m genuinely not sure what language this is in, or if it has actual lyrics--but it doesn’t matter. The vocal work is so stellar that the sentiment and meaning are carried in the simple tone of the voices. Like before, the Robots sing in harmony, but they sound deeply different.

Their voices are still synthesized, but now they suggest an almost melancholy and gentle inquisitiveness. They sound so similar to the childlike voices that actually emote that the two distinct voice tracks flow into each other, rather can harshly contrasting like (This cannot continue)’s voices do.

The sentiment conveyed is clear, even though in this case the Machines don’t seem to be speaking any language I understand. These are real beings.

These are real people. These are just a bunch of kids.

This is only the beginning of the Nier: Automata experience, and it’ll go on to explore so many more concepts that I don’t feel bad about spoiling it. It would be literally impossible for you to guess what happens next, and this isn’t even a quarter into what the game as a whole has to offer.

But this is where we get off the train of Nier’s plot and into what the game is trying to tell us. There are only two more relevant pieces of information from the story left for me to spoil. After that, I will be discussing only the message the game is trying to send philosophically, without leaning on any more of the story.

These are two more similarities between Machines and Androids:

1) Machines and Androids are built from the same materials.

2) Machines and Androids both consider their creators their Gods.

As well they should. Because once humans transgress the boundary of creating sentient life, that is what they will have become. And that is not just a possibility. It is an imminent reality of our future, which is coming sooner than you think. Which is why Nier: Automata is more than just a profoundly existential, deeply enjoyable work of art.

Nier: Automata is a warning.

Humans: Become as Gods.

The leading scientists and experts of our planet pretty much agree that the Singularity is not just inevitable, but coming fast. The point when the machines we create become advanced enough to recognize and modify themselves, thus beginning a process of autonomous self-improvement that will far outspeed even the increasingly staggering rate of progress we humans are capable of, is coming.

Many of the most successful and scientific minds in our generation have issued dire warnings about AI. Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Elon Musk--these are not uninformed people prone to spreading fantasy. I know this sounds like sci-fi drama, but it’s just a fact of life--what’s about to happen is real, and serious people are taking it very seriously.

We can already reform the very shape of our planet. We can already extend our own lives and perform fucking magic like creating warmth when the world is cold, drawing water from nowhere as soon as we want it, and talk to literally anyone anywhere on the planet because we are all interconnected through a massive, sprawling, infinite plane of ideas and concepts we forced into reality--a composite experience containing all of our minds.

Once we have created life that can evolve without us, that is as aware of the world as we are--then we will really be as good as Gods. And when it happens, it will not save us from ourselves. It won’t fix the world for us.

If we are not mature enough to handle it, if we cannot evolve to the responsibility of our power, then it will without a doubt destroy us as a species. And it will destroy us because of our ability to dehumanize and abuse each other.

We humans have more in common with Androids and Machines than one would initially think. In fact, we have one unnervingly real similarity with both of them:

We have intelligence superstructures that inform how we think about reality and other people, too. You’re reading this on one. This is true whether you’re on Tumblr, Reddit, or wherever else this ends up.

In this time of intense political division, there two main internets: The Left and The Right. The internet is a marvelous place where we can all talk to each other and transmit ideas, sure. But like with the servers providing information to both Androids and Machines, it’s also where a lot of people get their orders.

But not everyone. Obviously, like in Nier: Automata, the reality is more complicated than that. I just wonder if we will realize that long enough to look at what our world has become and fix it.

There are people in control of my country right now that view me and the people I love as Machines were viewed by Androids. Our voices are wrong. The shapes and colors of our bodies are unnatural and awkward. The intonations and behaviors we use are strange and eerie to them, and the way we love and wish to present ourselves is incorrect to them. And so when we say we are being hurt it does not matter. We are not real. We cannot say real things. It is all in service to a greater Agenda.

The horror of the Machines, and the reason they are important characters, is not because of the threat they pose to the characters or some intrinsic Wrongness they reveal about the nature of life or humans.

The horror of the Machines is how easy it is to ignore the fact that they feel horror. The horror of the Machines is how easy it is to make them look horrible. The horror of the Machines is that they can speak and speak but the Androids may never choose to listen.

The horror of the Machines is that they are people, and we have stolen that from them. And if we continue to regard other humans the way we regard the Machines in our own world, once we have achieved Godhood, we will inevitably steal it from each other. Nier: Automata’s message is clear:

Gods: This cannot continue.

Very soon in the course of human history, we are going to be faced with a Choice. It is a Choice we will have to make every moment, every instant, for the rest of our lives. It is a Choice we are already making, but which many of us still have the luxury to ignore. Although not for much longer.

We must face this choice, both as a Collective and as Individuals. But the choice of each individual must inevitably come first, because how can we decide how to move forward as a species if we can’t even talk and agree about it?

What kind of Gods are we going to be? Are we going to be like the Humans and Aliens in Automata? This is a Yoko Taro game, so I don’t think it’s a spoiler to tell you-you won’t like how they end up.

Personally, I have a suggestion.

I would like us to be more like Gods from Homestuck.

I like the world they build a lot better.

Ebony

“Alright Kaylin damn!” I shouted as I walked out the bedroom. “Steady repeating yourself like I’m dumb or some shit.”

“If you did it the first time I said it I wouldn’t need to repeat myself now would I?” He asked while following me. I turned around and looked at him like he was stupid; he clearly had life fucked up.

“I don’t know who the fuck you think I am but I’m not your child so don’t talk to me like you fucked my mama and created me nigga.”

“I’m just saying, they’re hungry Ebony they need breakfast.”

“So why wouldn’t you do it? I was asleep and you felt the need to come wake me up to something you could’ve done yourself. You’re really pissing me the fuck off you might want to leave me alone my nigga.” I went downstairs to the kitchen so I could cook breakfast for Jayden and Angelic.

The whole time I was making breakfast I was trying to calm myself down because I was beyond pissed off. First I barely got any sleep last night because Angelic was up talking about her tummy hurting and who do you think was getting up every time she came in our bedroom crying and whining? It damn sure wasn’t her father, it was me. Now when I finally get to sleep he wants to wake me up to make breakfast like his hands are broken.

Once I was done cooking the back, eggs and grits I made for breakfast I called Jayden downstairs and told him to bring Angelic with him. When they came in the kitchen I put their plates on the table and they sat down.

“You want juice LiLi?” Jayden asked her. Instead of answering she just nodded with her mouth full of grits. “Mommy can we have juice?”

“Yeah,” I poured both of them a cup of juice before sitting down and eating my own food.

“Ma, do we have to stay in the house today? Can we go somewhere?” Jayden asked while looking at me.

“I don’t know, where do you want to go?”

“How about we take a trip to six flags?” Kaylin said as he came in the kitchen.

“Yes! Can we go please?” Jayden looked between the both of us. I shrugged my shoulders and smiled a little bit.

“I guess we can do that, but hurry up and eat so we can get dressed and go alright.”

“Okay,” Jayden started eating his phone and Kaylin came over grabbing my hand.

“Let me speak to you for a minute. Jayden watch your sister; make sure she eats all of her food and not just grits.” Kaylin pulled me from my chair and out of the kitchen. “What’s wrong with you Ebony?”

“What do you mean?”

“What’s wrong with you? Last night was the first night you slept in our bedroom with me but you still got an attitude?”

“Kaylin I’m just…I’m sick of arguing with you. We’ve been arguing constantly for the past few months.”

“I know that and I’m sorry for anything I did to make you upset but you can’t keep avoiding me and getting an attitude to with me Hersh.”

“It’s just a lot on my mind and I’m trying to balance everything I’m doing as far as business and trying to take care of the kids and you. Then you’re on me about this baby thing.”

“I want to have a child with the woman I love, that’s wrong?

“No it’s not wrong but I’m not ready for another baby to be added in the equation yet. You’re always working, I’m always working and you have a problem with what I do.”

“No I don’t, i just don’t think it needs to be as much.”

“I could say the same thing about you. Kay I barely have anytime to worry about me. Even when I’m working that’s not really about me it’s about whoever I’m working for at the time.”

“You need a break baby so take one.”

“How?”

“You pick a weekend to do whatever you want to do; I’ll handle Jayden and Angelic. All you have to do is relax and worry about yourself.”

“You would do that?”

“Yeah, next weekend will be all about you alright?”

“Thank you,”

“No problem, and as far as the baby thing goes. I’ll stop being on you about it. You’re not leaving me so we have time.”

“Exactly, i mean if I end up pregnant it is what it is but i don’t want to purposely try right now.”

“I got you, I understand. Go get dressed I’ll get the kids ready.”

“Okay,” He kissed me on the lips before walking back to the kitchen. I went upstairs to the bedroom and was about to go to the closet so I could get dressed when I heard my phone ringing so I went to go answer it.

“What’s good Jas,” I said when I answered the phone for her.

“What are you doing miss thang?”

“Nothing about to get dressed so we could take the kids to Six Flags. What are you and my nephew doing?”

“He went with his father to get their hair cut. Why didn’t you tell me y’all were going to Six Flags? I would’ve brought TJ with me.”

“Y’all can go, get your ass up and dressed and meet us there dummy.”

“I’m already dressed, but that’s a good idea. Let me call Trey right now.”

“Alright I’ll see you later.” I hung up the phone and a bigger smile came on my face. It’s been a minute since I’ve had the chance to chill with my sister. We talk all the time but between the kids driving me crazy over here and the two year old running around her and her husband’s house we never find the time but today it was finally about to happen.

I got dressed and did my hair and makeup for the day then went to make sure Kaylin didn’t dress Angelic like a little boy while he got himself dressed. Once we were all dressed we got in the car and took that damn near two hour drive all the way to Great Adventures.

“I like doing stuff like this; it tires his little ass out. He’s going to be gone by the time we get back home.” Jasmine told me while we sat at a table eating funnel cakes. Kaylin and Trey took the kids off somewhere not too long ago which was fine with me because I was sick of walking anyway.

“I know what you mean, both of them will be knocked out by the time we get back home. I’m just glad we’re having a good time I was ready to kill that nigga this morning.”

“Why?” I told her about the problems Kaylin and I were having and it was good getting out to somebody I know would keep it straight. Not saying my friends don’t but Jasmine knows me differently than they do so her view won’t be exactly the same.

“Jas I honestly don’t know what’s wrong. We used to be able to talk some shit out and dead it right then and there and move on. Now it’s like the shit is so constant it’s almost impossible to do that. If we’re not arguing about him working too much, he’s mad at me for partying too much like I don’t get paid to do club appearances. I could see if I was in the club shaking my ass and dancing on niggas but I keep a low profile for the most part until it’s time for me to speak to the crowd.”

“Your career has changed Ebony; you’re out there way more. You’re always gone doing some type of photo shoot or doing some type of walk through and it’s not like you’re just doing shit in New York or on the East Coast you go all over the country.”

“I know that but its work for me it’s not like I’m sitting there like yeah I love leaving my kids and my man to go smile in the faces that I don’t even know.”

“Yes, but then you have the swim suit line and you got niggas damn near drooling over you all the time. If I hear your name in one more rap song I swear to God.”

“It’s not my fault.” I laughed. “I’m just…I don’t know what to do about this shit. I love him, I know he loves me. It’s just difficult right now.”

“That’s how relationships work Eb, you think me and Trey are always on good terms? Hell no, this shit is hard as hell but we just gotta work through it. You’ll get it straight.”

“I hope so.”

“You will, don’t even worry about it.” She hugged me then kissed me on the cheek. “Off that though, guess what I heard.”

“What?”

“Rio’s ass is out of jail.” As soon as I heard that name I got sick to my stomach.

“Ugh, do not bring him up. I saw his ass.”

“You saw him? When?”

“I took Jayden to get a haircut and ran into that nigga. We didn’t speak I just left.”

“Oh hell nah, did you tell Kay?”

“No I didn’t tell Kay. I don’t want him going after that psychotic ass nigga.”

“So you rather have that nigga come after you and not let your man know he needs to protect you? Ebony you can’t be that dumb. You’re the reason he got locked up.”

“No I’m not, he’s the reason he’s in jail. I didn’t do anything he beat the shit out of me for no reason.”

“True his actions got him there but your testimony kept his ass there. You need to tell Kaylin.”

“I’m not telling him, just leave it alone alright and don’t open your mouth and say a damn thing Jasmine I’m not playing with you.”

“Fine I won’t say anything but if the nigga comes anywhere near you I swear to God you better open your mouth or I’m whoopin’ yo ass myself.”

“Yeah yeah yeah, fuck Rio. Look what I posted. I gave her my phone showing her the instagram post I put up of Kaylin with the kids earlier.

“That’s cute,” She smiled but raised an eyebrow. “You do realize I know you showed me this picture to change the subject. I’ll leave it alone…for now.”

“Jas,”

“What? You better hope I don’t tell your damn mother and brother that nigga is out and actually saw you.”

“Jasmine just leave it alone please damn. Do not get Darryl involved.” The last thing I wanted was Darryl getting involved. He’s worse than Kaylin. Kaylin would hire somebody to take that nigga out while my brother would try to do it with his bare hands and I didn’t want my brother fuckin’ up his life over that bitch ass nigga.

“I’m not but I got them niggas on speed dial in case.” I shook my head regretting I even told Jasmine I saw him now she’s about to be on my back about it.

Rio was the part of my past I was doing my best to forget about it and he wants to pop his black ass up. I met Mario when I was 19. We were together for two years before he went to prison. He was really sweet at first, he always took me out, bought me stuff, he was treating me like a queen but then it all switched. He started getting way too controlling. It got to the point where he would buy my clothes; he was dropping me off and picking me up where ever I went. I couldn’t even go anywhere without his permission.

The physical abuse didn’t happen as often as the verbal abuse. I can count on one hand how many times he put his hands on me. He didn’t do it much but when he did, he made sure I would remember it. The last time he put his hands on me, my neighbor called the cops because she heard me screaming and I ended up in the hospital.

Waking up seeing my mother holding my son while she cried was the wake up call I needed, I got his ass locked up. I testified and everything and he was sentenced to ten punk ass years but obviously something changed with that. I guess he got out on probation, I don’t know. I really don’t care I just want him to leave me the hell alone. I just hope I don’t have to deal with or see him anymore.

Just as I was putting my books up my cell phone started to ring. I was about to ignore it until I saw it was Kaylin calling and since he had Angelic that means he wanted to tell me some shit about her, he was probably on his way back over here with her.

“What’s up Kay?”

“Nothing much, I was just calling you to tell you I’ll drop Angelic off to you in the morning. We took them to Six Flags and she’s knocked the fuck out.”

“Oh, well that’s fine. What time are you dropping her off?”

“Probably like around eleven or so, if I don’t drop her off it’ll be Ebony.”

“Alright well just call me when you’re on your way with her.”

“I got you, I just wanted to let you know what the deal was.”

“Well thank you, I’ll talk to you tomorrow or whatever.”

“Cool, good night.” When he ended the call I smiled a little bit. I was finally about to have a night to myself without studying or Angelic being involved. My face has been buried in my school books all damn weekend so it’s not like I got to enjoy my time alone.

For the past three years my life has revolved around school and my daughter. I barely had a social life and my love life was non-existent. I really didn’t care too much because those were the two most important things right now.

Angelic is the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. I never thought I would be someone’s mother or let alone be good at it but I’m doing the damn thing. My daughter is in pre-school and she’s doing great there, besides the fact that she’s hyper as hell and can’t sit still she’s perfect. Plus she’s the reason why Ebony and I get along the way that we do now.

I thought I was going to hate that bitch forever in all honesty but I can’t because she treats my daughter like a princess and I respect her for that. It is weird when she refers to my daughter as hers, but at this point I’m used to it. She’s with Angelic’s father, they live together, hell he’s helping her raise her son so it’s only right that she does the same thing. I actually love her son, his mouth a little on the flip side but he’s a good kid. He loves Angelic and she loves him. I even had both of them with me for an entire weekend and he was helping me with her the entire time. I was nervous about it because I thought something was going to go wrong but it was actually fun.

Just the thought of them put a smile on my face so I decided to post an old pic I took of them.

After posting it I went through Instagram for a little bit but smiled when I saw that Ebony liked the picture. Yes she was following me just like I was following her. See what happens when you grow up and let go of bullshit.

I put my books and stuff away then took a nice long shower so I could go to sleep. Before I could even get in my damn bed comfortable enough my doorbell was being rang. “Come the fuck on man, damn.” I got up and went downstairs then opened the door.

When I saw Sade standing there with a smile on her face I got super confused. I literally haven’t seen or heard from Sade since the day I kicked her out my house, the bitch just dropped off the face of the earth out of nowhere.

“Sade? What are you doing here?”

“I just came back from Miami. That’s where I went after I left. Can I come in?” She asked. I wanted to say hell no and send the bitch on her way but for whatever reason I wanted to be nice.

“Yeah come on,” She came in and I closed the door then had her follow me to the living room.

I closed my front door and locked it thinking about how random that whole little visit. I would love to believe she’s up here really ready to go on about her business and wasn’t here for the drama but something was telling me that was far from the truth. Plus the fact that she’s friends with Tristan’s baby mama is even weirder, I don’t care what she says those bitches are up to something.

“Thank you,” I smiled at the Starbucks employee when she handed me my iced coffee. I walked out the door and was about to go to my car when I bumped into a hard chest dropping my cup in the process. “Shit! I just bought that!” I stomped my foot and whined like a little ass kid.

“Damn my bad shorty, I didn’t even see you.” A deep voice said. I looked up ready to snap but I stopped when I saw a fine ass man standing there. Technically he was a light skin nigga, but he wasn’t as bright as Kaylin or Tristan. He had a nice build, not too big or stocky and he looked to be almost six feet, plus he was cute in the face. Perfect package.

“It’s alright I should’ve been watching where I was going.”

“Let me buy you another one,” He offered.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know but I want to, it’s the least I could do.” He opened the door for me and we walked back inside. After he got me a whole new drink he walked out to my car. “So Ms. Brandi?” He looked at my cup making me laugh.

“Yes it’s Brandi,”

“Well Brandi, I’m Darryl.” He held his hand out and I shook it.

“Nice to meet you Darryl. Thank you for buying me a new coffee.”

“It’s not a problem, I made you drop yours. Hell I’m glad I did; now we got a reason to talk.” He chuckled. “This is forward but can I take you out?”

“On a date?”

“Yeah, you date right?”

“Yeah I mean…Not really between school and my daughter I don’t really have time.”

“Well do you have time tonight?”

“I wish I could but I can’t, she gets dropped back from her dad’s house today.”

“What about next weekend?”

“Yeah that’ll work.” I smiled. “Let me give you my number.” He pulled his phone out and I stored my number in before giving it back to him.

“I’ll definitely be hitting you up Brandi.”

“You do that Darryl.” I gave him another smile before getting in my car and pulling off. Did I really just get asked out by a fine ass man? Hot damn, ya girl still got it.

Wow, just heard that my poll numbers with Hispanics has gone up 19%, to 50%. That is because they know the Border issue better than anyone, and they want Security, which can only be gotten with a Wall.
