Usually when someone blames Alicent for The Dance, my gut reaction is to defend her and say that it’s not her fault. It’s the fault of Viserys and the various systems already in place, and that The Dance was inevitable without Alicent’s direct involvement. And it’s a relatively normal reaction because the fandom has largely agreed that The Dance is, in fact, very bad. Lots of innocent lives are going to be ended or ruined and war is never a particularly good occasion. But honestly? I don’t even feel like I should have to defend her from the claim that she is the cause of The Dance. Aside from that being verifiably untrue…it’s commendable in a way. The lost lives are incredibly sad, so I’m not cheering for that, I want to make clear. But the beginning of the fall of the Targaryens? The destruction of the dynasty that causes constant wars and bloodshed? The end of a line of incestuous blood purists with a superiority complex against all of their people? BIG FAN. Like really. The fact that Alicent fans need to fight this huge fight that Alicent is mostly innocent is so annoying. Because even if she wasn’t innocent, I support it. Alicent was abused by the Tagagryens and used to birth sons and satisfy Viserys’s wishes for nothing. She deserved to end the line. And even if she wasn’t innocent, the fall of the Targs is always, 100% going to be good in my book.
So yeah, I’ll argue that Alicent is innocent because it’s the truth. But even if you refuse to believe that she’s innocent, I’ll still be on her side. Because if she was genuinely guilty, she’d have done the right thing personally and societally in the end.

Honestly, Alicent destroying the Targaryen dynasty would've been the funniest event in the entirety of Planetos. Imagine claiming you're the greatest, purest dynasty because you have dragons and incest then getting wiped out because one woman was neurotic. Queen shit.

Please explain
Edit:
In the second the Dance happened. Both Aegon and Rhaenyra declared themselves Queen/King.
In the third one, Rhaenyra is the Queen and the problem is in Rhaenyra's reign.
In the fourth answer, Rhaenyra becomes Queen and Jace King after her. The problem is in HIS reign.

Cersei Lannister & Rhaenyra Targaryen:
Are forced to marry someone they don’t love, so they find solace in the arms of a family member and commit incest
Seduce members of the Royal Guard
Have their husbands murdered because they didn’t like them
Have three bastard kids
Commit atrocities to claim the Iron Throne
Betray their allies when they feel threatened
Rule with fire and blood
Live in constant paranoia so they murder innocent servants whom they believe will betray them, even if said betrayal would be a direct consequence of the way they treat their subjects
Are hated by the people
and lets us not forget the -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But no, please go ahead and tell me all about how Rhaenyra is this feminist icon who has the divine right to rule over hundreds of thousands of people because her daddy said so, therefore if I don’t support her I’m a misogynist.

The way people use Aemma Arryn's death to justify the hate Alicent gets needs to studied.
Aemma Arryn was used as a broodmare since a young age, married to a man older than her. She was put through multiple pregnancies, miscarriages and stillbirths against her will and when time came, she didn't even get the dignity to die in her own terms. She was gutted like a pig as she got held down, as she begged Viserys to stop. All because Viserys wanted a Son.
Alicent also marries a man who's far more older, old enough to be her father, the man in question being her childhood companion's father, someone who watched her grow up alongside his daughter. She too goes through multiple pregnancies; anyone of them could've been her last, anyone of them could've resulted in her meeting the same end as Aemma. But she doesn't, she in fact bears Viserys THREE healthy sons. Viserys gets THREE of what he killed his first wife for and he neglects them.
So what's the difference between Aemma and Alicent you might ask? Well according to some TB members Aemma Arryn suffered with class or grace as she fulfilled her queenly duties, like the High Valyrian Queen she is.
A stark contrast to the "Filthy Low Class" Alicent Hightower with her "inferior genetics" who wanted Viserys to give a damn about the kids he had with her. How dare Alicent Hightower want what was the best for her children? Only Rhaenyra gets to do that! How dare she show any agency or ambition instead of sitting in the corner and let the "rightful queen" walk all over her and her children.
How dare she get mad when her son got bullied for not having a dragon? How dare she loose her composure when that same son losses his eye because he got attacked by those same bullies? How dare she attack Rhsenyra the "rightful heir" when she latter asks that her now freshly mutilated son be sharply questioned Why can't she just roll over and die?

Sick of hearing about how sexually liberated Targaryens are. Targaryens are more "sexually liberated" than the rest of Westeros in the way Mormon fundamentalists are more "sexually liberated" than the rest of America.

“i, criston cole, a grown man in my early twenties (when the show starts), met the princess when she was 14 (in hotd) and 8 (in f&b), groomed her, and then had sex with her while she was intoxicated (and still a teenager) but my stans seem to believe that i, A GROWN MAN, was the one taken advantage of and raped.”
even though she was a child in f&b and these were unsubstantiated rumors. even though he’s been an adult since the show started and she was still a kid. even though he’s been her closest confidant for years and watched her grow up. even though the writers and producers and show runners and actors ALL AGREE that it was meant to be consensual in the show. CRISTON is the one who was taken advantage of? CRISTON is the one who was raped? either get real or get slapped because i have no time for that type of bullshit.

I will never forgive HOTD for making me sit through TWO Rhaenyra births and TWO Rhaenyra weddings…
But never having us see Alicent’s wedding or births. Scenes that would have forced the fans to confront the true reality of how despicable her situation is. It would force viewers to see a child, devastated, as she walks down the aisle to her creepy old man of a husband. It would force viewers to watch a little girl have a child. Completely unprepared and alone, crying for her mother and finding no sympathy. She has no father to protect her. No mother to guide her and comfort her. No husband who cares about her.
It would force team black to stop seeing her as the evil seductress, for even a moment. And see her true vulnerability. See how she doesn’t, and never did, want this. See how these are not consequences of her actions, but instead the consequences of the men around her that she has to suffer for them. Because they don’t care about her. Viserys doesn’t care about her.
These are scenes that are meant to bring sympathy to her character. To give Alicent a reason to be righteously angry at the family and system that broke her down and stole her childhood. It gives Alicent a valid motive to fight aside from fear. And it takes away the chances for team black to deny her suffering at least a little bit.
Because as the current narrative sits, it’s easy to ignore Alicent’s experience and warp it into a much more pleasant story. They see Alicent “seducing” the king and then she is already married. And then she’s pregnant and the babies magically appear. No screaming or crying or bleeding involved. All is good. The teenager definitely didn’t suffer at all. And by doing this some people can’t sympathize as much or they are given allowances to intentionally not sympathize.
Instead. The current narrative allows for Alicent to be the seductress, the crazed woman, the jealous bitch, and the villain. But if we saw what she actually went through. Alone, scared, suffering, neglected, and holding it all in. We would be allowed to see her as she truly is. The victim. Finally crushing under the weight of it all and lashing out.
(And the narrative would be all the better for it because instead of feminist icon team vs crazy trad wife and co (as far as team black sees it), we would have woman fighting against patriarchal narrative for her own claim vs woman fighting against patriarchal narrative to destroy the people who hurt her)

i can't even begin to understand the thought process of rhaegar and his utterly absurd decision to take the most powerful kingsguards with him to either fight or to guard his 15-year-old mistress/abductee (?) and their babe with questionable legitimacy while leaving behind his wife and his two children (one of them is his fucking heir) to be guarded by who exactly? 16-year-old jaime lannister? (who was “guarding” the king that kept him “hostage”)
rhaegar knew damn well his father is going even more insane after a war he started by his utter stupidity and selfishness and they won’t be safe yet he didn’t bother to ensure their safety before he fucks off… the only explanation is that he didn’t give a flying fuck about anyone but himself and his delulu which makes him complicit in their tragic death as much as his mad daddy who kept them hostages and the lannisters who slaughtered them

Yknow what? I agree with Criston Cole.
He shouldn’t say that about Rhae!!- Why not? He’s allowed to dislike ONE woman who was his BOSS.
He shouldn’t bully Rhae’s kids!!- nah he should have bullied them harder. (Also if he was nice the court could say they were HIS kids, putting him in more danger!
He shouldn’t have killed Joffrey or that other guy (I forgot his name 💀)- ight, Daemon shouldn’t have killed Vaemond but y’all cheered that on so idk.
I think he should have been WORSE, I want him pushing the strongs in the dirt and laugh when aegon copies him. I want him to be disgusted by Rhaenrya, Daemon, and Viserys; to fight back a gag when he has to be near viserys, to use his power as a kings guard to be an asshole to those under him cuz he’s alicents favorite.
Melt him be a lil brat he deserves it.

I know it must’ve really gagged Rhaenys when Vaemond told her that it was a queen that sat the throne. Like I bet it truly boils some Targaryens *cough Daemon cough* blood that little miss sad brown eyes with no dragon managed to peacefully rule over something they see as a right or a power only someone who is like them should have. They lash out at her because she is the outsider in ‘their’ territory.
And it’s extra sad bc Alicent literally tried with all of them. She dressed in red and black, she wanted to show Daemon those nasty tapestries, she supported Rhaenyra’s claim till she just couldn’t anymore. She wanted to ‘assimilate’ bc often that is all you can do when you are in a hostile environment or powder keg situation. It’s why I hate the ‘alicent’s kids aren’t real targs’ or ‘she’s trying to get rid of targ culture’ arguments. On top of just not making sense, it’s not true. She TRIED. All she was met with was resentment, often for decisions that were out of her control.
It is easy for them to use Alicent (the outsider) as a scapegoat bc if they didn’t they’d have to look at their own behavior and how their ‘Targaryen exceptionalism’ has done nothing but make them greedy and stupid

I can't understand how anyone could look at the Storming of the Dragonpit - the greatest act of courage to ever be seen in Westeros - and despise the smallfolk for it.
The bravery, the discontentment, the hopelessness for their own future, and yet, the undying hope for the chance of liberation that would push those who suffer the most from the vicious wars for a metal chair that is meaningless, to finally say - Enough.
To risk being burned alive so that their children won't be. Knowing that the chance for failure is tremendous and nevertheless trying. Because they have to. Because enough is enough. Because no one is safe, not even their own. Because there is no other way. Because the Targaryens will always resort to this. They will always resort to Fire and Blood.
The rule of the dragons must come to an end.
And to look at the greatest act of revolution against the Iron Throne and think it anything else but justified, earned, bought and payed for with their own blood. That anyone would find it in their hearts to pity the dragons, that are nothing more than weapons of mass destruction is so contrary to the spirit of the series that I wonder if people know what they're reading/watching at all...
