Why Fairy Tail's and Eden's Zero's fanservice is a problem
I'm a big fan of Fairy Tail. I started watching it in 2020 and got hooked due to the comedy and characters. It was such a good anime, and the manga was even better.
However, as I went on watching it, the fanservice began to get, too excessive. Everytime, it felt nearly every comedic or serious moment that had a midway gag was interrupted by showing off Lucy's chest or something.
This got even worse later on, with one of the anime episodes having an episode where all the women in Fairy Tail had to dress in skimpy swimsuits in front of a whole crowd.
Now, you maybe wondering, what's the big deal about being fanservicey? Well, for one, it ruins all potential gags for funny moments. There could be a clever moment for a joke, only for the punchline to literally be boobs. And when there's a serious, high-stake moment? Interrupt it with BOOBS.
Not only does this ruin moments or just lazy jokes, but when I'm watching the anime or reading the manga, I feel like a pervert, and hiding it from sight.
And Eden's Zero made it even WORSE!
You know what happens in the most important lore-drops of Eden's Zero? The girls are bathing in the nude, and the boys are chilling. No, the meeting doesn't take place in like a conference room or a designated area like a normal meeting, no, a fucking bath. Just so they can show off the girls bodies and shit. And these aren't just adults, there are also some minors there!
Everything fanservice related in Fairy Tail and Eden's Zero is absolutely terrible, and should really be removed.

I just rewrite the characters in Fairy Tail for the sake of my mental health
Honestly same and mood.
Your fanfic ideas always sound 100x times better than whatever junk (cough gr///via for once cough) Mashima is churning out now anyway!

Looking back at it, Natsu treated Lucy so horribly. Calling her fat as "jokes", calling her "weak" at some points in battle, or the cheap "she's always n*ked in battles", ditching her for a year with nothing but a letter, constantly breaking into her house and gr0ping her multiple times...

Gray should use his creation magic more
I really hated how erza just talked abt his ice maker magic being beautiful once and it was never brought up again
I don't think most of y'all understand how OP it can be. Imagine being able to create things out of thin air and not utilize it to its limit which really doesn't exist because creation is only limited by one's imagination
I want to see Gray create bigger and much more complex stuff I want him to be able to enchant things with his magic and create more different and stronger structures not just weapons
Ice maker could easily be one of the strongest most dangerous kinds of magic but NOOO ice make lance go prrr hasn't mashima watched frozen or smthn
Gray should be able to create ice particles, manipulate said particles, fuse them with whatever element compatible with ice and then control said element or just use these particles to make others choke on ice
Again, creation is only limited by imagination and Gray absolutely rocks in that department

Growth, and Trauma in Fairytail
I love fairytail with all of my heart unfortunately it’s my special interest so I’ve overanalysed the hell out of this series and one thing I have noticed with mashima’s writing is the way characters process their trauma. (This post will contain anime spoilers) ALSO TRIGGER WARNING FOR S AND VIOLENCE
Aka, non-existent. For the most part at least. However there are some exceptions to this like with Gray. With characters like Gray, it’s very clear to see why and how he copes with traumatic events take what happened to Ur as example. Gray believes Ur’s death was his own fault (my guess is probably because he was the one who brought up the deliora situation to her causing her to come to rescue him but as a result having to nope out if life), as a result he believes he doesn’t deserve to live as it ‘should’ve been him’. His actions show this as early as Galuna island arc with our boy using iced shell against Lyon. And multiple other times, he always tries to dish out that spell as a sacrifice because he believes his life is worth nothing more.
This is proof that mashima can and does write trauma well sometimes however his writing can also pale in comparison like with the death of igneel. Specially in the Alvarez arc. Natsu was absolutely traumatised by what had happened and we can see this with him running off for a year with happy. He needed his alone time and yet once he returns its as if nothing had happened, he’s his same old smiley silly self. If you told me to look for the differences in natsu’s character between the first episode and the final season, I would have a very very hard time. There was no growth to his character apart from getting ‘stronger’, we don’t get to see how he comes to terms with the fact his one life goal is void or how he deals with the aftermath of tartaros. Afterwards he is back to his smiley goofy self again like nothing ever happened. There’s no signs at all of Natsu even being affected by it apart from getting stronger. His one life goal is now six feet under ground and he has no visible signs of being depressed over that. He’s capable of smiling, being happy, and his usual self. Even during alvarez arc he’s just as fearless and unchanged as ever. During the alvarez arc Natsu had come face to face with this killer once again and instead of showing any signs of fear at all he looks acnologia in the eyes and takes him head on as if he were a weaker oponent or something.
Realistically acnologia should have terrified natsu. Just like how natsu had been afraid of gildarts seeing his raw power, and acnologia is ten times stronger than gildarrs. Especially considering that dragon had KILLED natsu’s dad. Ripping him in half right in front of him, someone Natsu probably viewed as the strongest and indestructible torn apart just like paper. I understand everyone processes trauma differently but we’ve SEEN first hand Natsu showing fear to stronger opponents like Gildarts. So why is it that all of a sudden when Natsu is faced with acnologia in person once more there is no signs of fear, no memories of the trauma, no nothing rather this cookie cutter hero moment again. Where he takes aconologia on as if he were a weaker foe, even laughing to himself and making witty remarks. We’ve seen at the face of truly terrifying power Natsu shrivels up into a stuttering sweating mess. So it doesn’t make any sense that he feels nothing seeing acnologia again. Saying he did the healing during the one year time skip through tartaros doesn’t even make sense because he challenged gildarts to a fight during the manga and you can see him shrivel up in fear unable to speak once more as soon as gildarts destroys a mountain to save him.
Natsu can feel fear. Yet why not with acnologia? Someone who should have traumatised him.
This happens so many times throughout the series. Trauma being swept under the rug like its just another tuesday. I dont get why he can write trauma fine with Gray, but when it comes to people like Lucy or Natsu suddenly its void.
I just wish the characters in this series were given more growth but time and time again it feels like im watching the same characters from episode one over and over again.
But anyway that’s just my two cents on fairytails writing of trauma. This is my first real post on tumblr so it’s probably dogwater, but yeah im open to hearing other peoples thoughts on this and thank you for reading this low effort post.

(this is a LONG rant post about nalu and big 4 and how mashima doesnt give a damn about any of them. buckle in it is the year of the christian lord 2024 i dont give a damn if i strike a nerve with big 4 shippers by criticizing this fucking series. yall run this damn fandom and have mashima pander to you every week. let me complain and HEED THE TAGS)
i rmbr the other day i saw a post by a big four shipper talking about how they were so lucky to be getting the new anime and how nalu shippers had been living off scraps for years and i gotta say some of yall are STRANGE and out of TOUCH cuz damn whats all this official art and these nalu moments in every other chapter??
but even then, genuinely what makes yall think mashima GAF about making nalu endgame? that he ever cared about making any of the big 4 endgame?
yes ik gajevy is canon but are you srsly okay with the way mashima handled it?? "ah yes this girl was brutalized by this one guy severely and he wants to make amends but dont have him say it out loud or apologize, just through little gestures, OH suddenly shes okay with him being close to her and doesnt have any trauma or nightmares or panic attacks around him ever at all and have her drift away from her literal best friends and only ever be with him and oh she performed mouth to mouth on him okay- THEYHAVEABABY."
i really do believe he didnt intend for natsu and lucy to be together from the beginning which is why he hadnt made them kiss or anything in the OVER A DECADE LONG main series. like bruh he is MILKING THE SHIT out of his IP by dangling nalu like a carrot on a stick and dropping official art here and there and having casual ship moments (aka typical close friendship stuff but make it romantic by including breaking and entering, sexual harrassment) cuz he knows thats what gets continous readership. he'll keep pandering to yall and giving yall bullshit at the expense of the original story and characters (see: gajeel and levy becoming shells of what they used to be for the sake of some unhealthy rushed ass het ship)
anyways i am lwk bitter about that post cuz FUCK DO YOU MEAN CRUMBS YALL ARE THE LOUDEST BITCHES IN THIS FANDOM LMAO 😭😭😭

kinda sad sting’s strong queer coding is masqueraded just as “admiration” for natsu because mashima is a coward. like yes that’s cute but i’m tired of it just being “i want to surpass natsu-san” and overall being a natsu fanboy but NEVER giving any hint of being interested on other men, it’s annoying
I feel like he's just not capable of outright writing a character as queer. Loudly gay. Within Fairy Tail, characters like Laxus, Cana, Mirajane, Sting and Freed have had many interactions and moments that were arguably "gay" but while I could look at these mfs and call them a bunch of fruits all day I know it's all literally been jokes. Jokes.
If Mashima were to actually imply that Sting's admiration for Natsu were based on love, it wouldn't be sincere on his part. It'd definitely come off as a punchline and I'm sure it wouldn't come without another character looking at him odd in the same panel 💀

Y'know what, maybe I'll just pretend Fairy Tail ends at the Edolas Arc so it's a win for everyone. Lisanna comes back alive, there's no Zeref to worry about, Loke and Lucy are hinted with the "Is he your boyfriend?", Juvia and Gray don't end up together, not much of the Mystic/Jellal & Erza bs, and so forth.
That means you'd get about 95 episodes without having to worry about fanservice or forced pairings with just a tiny bit of filler in the middle. It's before it gets all "what the fuck is happening/why are we wasting so much time" segment and arcs.
A perfect ending in the rain while most of the characters concerns are finally resolved. It would be an intense, but well-executed ending instead of what we actually got.

Listen im natsu's number one i love that boy more that anything but him vs rogue and sting was BULLLLLLSHIIIT. I remember at the end of phanthom lord where natsu legit tried to befriend Gajeel after their fight ended (it did not last cuz Natsu blew up his home valid Gajeel) and...i dont know i feel like at least THAT natsu would have been excited to fight with him on a team.
Where is the drama?? The forcing to work together when they realize oh shit sabretooth has better teamwork?? The pushing the rivalry aside for their found family's pride??
Where is the confused as fuck why the hell is a unison raid activating between us-oh. Aw fuck we're friends. And one of them denying that forever while the other smirks/grins and goes yea we are???
things like this make me wish Mashima just did slice of life cause COME ON. The OPENING SONG HAD A BETTER FIGHT.
Sorry for the rant i have Feelings about this.
It's not just less than what Sting and Rogue deserved, it's not just less than what Gajeel deserved, it's less than what Natsu deserved.
An easy win that deflates the hype isn't a great mark for Natsu. Good fights are fights where the hero has to struggle, and overcoming the odds is why they're impressive. Retroactively telling me "oh yeah, Sting and Rogue suck, Natsu can take them on his own" is as much a disservice to Natsu as the rest of them. I'm not gonna go starry-eyed just 'cause you effectively tell me they were never a threat to the shining hero.
You know, I'm also kind of mad because this could've been one of those times where the anime changed things up. At least just a little. They extended and altered a couple fights in the first anime, but I have the distinct feeling that, judging by several other factors, Bridge was way less independent and more willing to swig the juice Mashima was serving than Satellite was.

i hate to break it to y'all but mashima is not the all powerful god of writing women that you think he is. the way he wrote lisanna as nothing more as a roadblock to his main c*sh*t couple? misogynistic. the way he's constantly drawing lucy and erza getting tortured and stripped against their own will, chalking it up to fanservice? misogynistic AND creepy. the way he constantly writes wendy into being ashamed of her body (the fact that she has small boobs. which. sir why are you thinking about the boob size of 14 year olds?) misogynistic AND pedophilic. the way he writes juvia to be nothing but completely and totally obsessed with a man? misogynistic. the way he writes levy forgiving gajeel so easily after what he did to team shadow gear? misogynistic. why do people (shounen anime fans, INCLUDING women who are fans of shounen anime) pretend mashima is the gold standard of writing women.

I remember a long time ago I fell upon a translated interview with Mashima talking about being a mangaka and FT. I remember the disappointment when he said that juvia was his favorite female and how Gray was the character that he put most aspects of himself on. I remember thinking that there was no way gruvia wouldn’t become canon now. And not bc it was good or made sense for the story but bc it was a self insert and the authors “waifu” completing a personal fantasy.
Mashima's Favorite WHAT??
My jaw literally dropped reading this, Anon. I had never seen that interview, and now I wish it didn't exist because- what???
juvia lockser is Mashima's favorite female character???
HOW???
My already immense disappointment in Mashima plummeted to new lows after hearing about this. I'm not sure it can get any lower, but I'm sure he'll continue to one-up himself as 100YQ continues.
You interpreted gr///via perfectly based on this interview, Anon, that it turns out he really just made Gray his self-insert character just so he could fulfill his fantasy of, uh, having a creepy, crazy, stalker waifu lust after him??? Ew. I do not want to associate Gray Fullbuster with Hiro Mashima in any regard.
You're right that gr///via is not good nor does it make sense for the story. I've already talked extensively about how gr///via is a terrible ship, so focusing on the latter point, it just doesn't make sense for the story of Fairy Tail whatsoever. The whole fricking moral of Fairy Tail is friendship and family, and yet juvia shows time and time again she couldn't care less about friendship or family if it's Gray versus them no matter the circumstances.
How does that fit the moral???
And some Pros are so delusional to say that juvia is a boss lady and that she's an example of woman empowerment when she literally cannot function without a man. juvia is a weak, selfish parasite, leeching off of Gray and tearing him and herself and everyone around her down, and Mashima likes her the best???
??? is all I can say right now, really.
Thank you very much for your very informative ask, Anon, you've helped me understand gr///via as Mashima intended it to be much better... And I am disappointed in him right alongside you...

Do I STILL really believe Nalu won’t happen?
Short answer: No.
But you know that's not how we do things here.
It feels so good to be back! (sort of, at least) I know I've been away for some time. Part of it is being busy with things in real life. Part of it is mental health not doing too well. Some of my plans for things have shifted quite a bit, as you might be able to tell.
All that said, this hasn't changed.
I haven't talked about this in the proper context of the sequels. I've taken shots at the ship. But have I given this ship the treatment I'd probably be expected to?
Or, at least, have I explained my reasons for still doubting the ship will happen? Because I don't have to like that a ship is happening to believe it will happen.
Speaking of which, what better place to start with than talking about that other ship I rag on a lot: Gruvia. I've said this a few times, but I don't like Mashima's writing of Gruvia in the sequel. To be brief, the ship's focus is different from what I believe it should be. And having Juvia as an active series member has long since passed the point of straining reality.
At the same time, no one denies that Gray has decided to accept Juvia's feelings. He's come to terms with himself in this regard and will accept Juvia as a lover once the mission ends. (How are we still on the fourth dragon?) It's hard to see something like Gray wishing for an alternate universe where he's married with a kid and ask myself, "How serious is Mashima about this ship happening?" You know, as if it isn't only a matter of time.
The issue is that Nalu isn't on that level. That sounds like me being biased and denying the reality right, especially if I listen to certain people.
But let's compare these two ships and what's happened to them in the sequel.
When the gang visited Fairy Nali, their version of Juvia was the catalyst for Gray being as open with Juvia as he's poised to be. Fairy Nali has its own Nalu, but nothing meaningful came from it. Natsu got jealous because of Lucy, but that's not brought up again and doesn't affect anything.
They go to Edolas and see their alternate-world kids. I'll grant you that Natsu and Gray want to bring their "kids" to the Earthland. But what else happens? I mentioned what goes on with Greige already. Ashley talks with Lucy about the possibility of a future romance with Natsu, but she's not meaningfully moved by it.
Come to think of it, there was a similar conversation to that when they were on the Earth God Dragon. Lucy heard Touka had a romantic interest in Natsu. Her response wasn't one of jealousy. She figured it wouldn't go well once she heard about it. (It's almost as if she knows that Natsu isn't currently interested in a romantic relationship if he ever will be.)
Nothing showed that more than the one moment I've talked about the most from the sequel: Natsu and the women in his heart. The fact that Natsu's bunch of women is canonically juxtaposed with Gray's feelings for Juvia shows that Mashima's taking this ship as a joke.
To be a Nalu shipper, I must believe one of a few realities. It's possible that Natsu does have romantic feelings for all these women and can't decide between them. You know, despite Wendy being in that bunch. It's also possible Mashima, being in tune with fandom, is trying to appease fans of Natsu's most-popular ships, even outside of Nalu. It wasn't as if I expected anything involving Nali in the sequel. My theory, which I alluded to when it happened, is Mashima making a callback to a sketch he made a while back. That would explain why Mira and Cana were there but don't talk. They weren't in that old sketch.
I can't say for sure what this moment is supposed to mean. But I know that this isn't helping Nalu's case as a romantic ship. Not just because it's multiple women. Not just because Gray's only interested in Juvia. Natsu's focus in the matter is that Yakune put his friends against him. Not women he's interested in romantically used to distract him.
By the way, I'm sick of having to say this after eight years of having this blog. But I guess some things never change. Characters being put in awkward potentially sexual positions isn't proof your ship will happen. At best, it's a cheap gag that could reveal characters' feelings through their reactions. At worst, it's one of the most annoying tropes of the medium we love and want to take more seriously. Lucy wanting Natsu to touch her anywhere doesn't hold the kind of weight I'm annoyed to know so many fans want it to have. That doesn't matter how real or fake Lucy or whoever else is.
But what tells me Nalu isn't likely isn't any of that. It's not anything involving Gruvia or chapter 71 of the sequel. I don't think I'd say this a few years ago. But the thing that sells me against Nalu is Jerza. Of course, this isn't to say Jerza happening would jeopardize Nalu. But Jerza has been making strides toward becoming canon.
A few years ago, I concluded that Erza would never willingly leave Fairy Tail, even to be with Jellal. That means the only way Jerza could happen would be if Jellal accepted his actions as being forgiven and was willing to join Erza to some degree. This could be joining Fairy Tail or some sort of mutual partnership outside of it. Mind you, this was for how I was thinking of how to pair them in rewriting the series. (Also, thank "Kidnapping Erza".)
Now, what's happened in the sequel?
Awkward and annoying as it is, Jellal put his past behind him. At this point, it's more a matter of conviction, similar to Gray not using Iced Shell. Erza invited Jellal to join Fairy Tail. He's currently considering the offer and isn't too enthusiastic about it. But if the guild was willing to accept Gajeel destroying the guild and stapling Shadow Gear to a tree, Jellal's not too far from being accepted by the guild. Not because Tower of Heaven isn't objectively worse. Because if the one person in the guild hurt by his actions is willing to accept him, no one else has any reason to reject him. Especially considering she might become the next guild leader if Makarov dies (again).
And all the while, they genuinely get flustered at the idea of being in a relationship with each other. The notion of a Jerza romance is treated as all but a certainty by characters familiar with them multiple times in canon, including the the past few chapters we’ve got from the sequel. As far as I can tell, no one operates under the assumption this ship isn't happening. Nothing has convinced me this shouldn't be the case.
What can I say of Nalu in this regard?
It's one thing if I question whether or not Nalu will happen. I've never seriously liked it and have outright said it won't and shouldn't happen multiple times for multiple reasons. In years past, I probably would point to that and call it a day. But, if there’s any benefit to being away for the past few months, I’ve had time to justify something crazy.
For the past few years, Nalu fans have questioned if the ship will happen. People who like the ship genuinely wonder if Mashima will make the ship happen or if they're right to doubt its prospects. I've seen this all over the internet, not just here on Tumblr. It’s a question people bring up on Reddit. It’s mentioned in places like Youtube and Twitter.
And as much as people will reassure them that it's going to happen, this isn't true of the other ships in the Big 4. As a fandom, we're convinced Jerza will happen. We're convinced Gruvia will happen. No matter how people feel about them, I don't see anywhere near as many people questioning these ships happening as Nalu.  Gajevy's already happened, and we know how that's supposed to go.
And, to be honest, this has been amazing to notice. Going from everyone taking Nalu for granted to seeing the whispers of Nalu not being as possible genuinely makes me feel so vindicated. When I made my big post about Nalu years back, I was terrified someone would tell me I was wrong and tear down my post as idiotic. If I were to remake that post now, I'd have so much fewer worries making the post. Even making the sequel to that post after Mashima’s supposed positive comments about Nalu at NYCC was so much easier knowing they weren’t meant to be.
It's almost a shame that I've all but run out of things to say about the ship. At this point, there's not a whole lot else for me to say but "I told you so, idiots" to the people who doubted me and those who agreed with me. It's not unlikely that something new will happen that requires me to talk about Nalu between now and Mashima's final decision on the ship. Something always comes up, be it a moment or something in fandom. Some Nalu fans may reply to my posts, and I'll answer them. But nothing to change how we all view Nalu will likely happen for some time.
Is Nalu possible? Yes, Nalu can still happen as long as Mashima's still writing the series. I don't think that a canonized Nalu will look anywhere near as interesting as the fandom wants to believe it would be. However, it's not as if Nalu is entirely impossible. I said that when I made my first long post about Nalu. (I didn't in the sequel because I figured the series was over.) I said that when we learned Mashima didn't plan the ship originally. I still believe that now, despite everything that I've said.
While nothing is set in stone, I'll enjoy all the salt from the Nalu fandom.
