One moment in "Dungeon Meshi" that I really liked was the Kelpie (early SPOILERS). Because, yeah, Senshi has spent a lot of time with this creature and had many neutral / non-violent interactions with it, he's even named it and it appears to like him, but it also still tries to kill him the moment he makes himself vulnerable to it because it's still a wild animal! It's a large carnivore! It is not tame and absolutely not domesticated!
It's good policy in most decent zoos that keepers don't EVER have any direct contact with certain animals and are never in the enclosures with them! Because it doesn't matter if the animal was born and raised in captivity, or if the animal has been trained to cooperate with medical check-ups and feeding procedures, it's still a wild animal who might suddenly decide to kill or maim anyone who gets too close one day. Even herbivores can get super territorial and aggressive, angry or scared or startled, no matter how "nice" they seem, and the large ones can also accidentally break every bone in your foot just by standing on it even while being friendly. People have to be super careful with trained DOMESTICATED critters too! Horses, cows, dogs, etc. can all be super dangerous if you don't respect their strength and their personal space!
Senshi being "friendly" with a Kelpie is in many ways no different from someone making "friends" with a tiger or a polar bear. Like, sure, maybe it'll accept scraps and seem playfully curious about you upon your first encounter, and miraculously leave you intact, but, HONEY, THEY EAT PEOPLE. It does not like you like you like it! You look like food to them! It's like asking a housecat not to eat a pet bird! One day, it'll be hungry or bored or grumpy, and you'll stop being lucky! Don't feed it and for the love of your neck, don't TRUST it.

I'm thinking about Anne the Kelpie and about animals and their instincts
About those people who raise tigers and bears and chimpanzees and get mauled. How my cat would eat me if we were the same size.
How an animal can love you, and still kill you, because of their instincts
How maybe Anne didn't want to hurt Senshi. Maybe she loved him like he loved her. She got to eat well when he was around and she didn't have to fear him.
But then he got on her back. And her instincts kicked in. Maybe she wanted to eat him all along. Maybe she couldn't help it. Maybe she felt betrayed. Maybe she loved him too.

Dunmeshi Theory under cut
Tumblr media
I can't really be certain, but Laios roping her may be the reason Anne attacks Senshi.
Like, I definitely understand that Senshi is too comfortable with creatures that can and will kill him, as with the Mandrakes and the Golems, but I don't think 'Coin Bugs eat Mimics, The Chicken-head is the Tail, pull your mandrakes,' Kui would have it just be 'oh yeah nah, a Kelpie's a Kelpie.'
Senshi named her.
The only other monsters I've seen he has a name for are his Golems.
That said, he'd never previously tried to ride her.
He'd also never been down this far with another group.
I think the group made Anne nervous, but here's the biggest point of confusion for me.
Did Laios draw Engarde, or did Engarde draw itself again? We don't get to see that this time around. If Laios drew Engarde, Engarde might not have sensed any danger.

okay i need to know if anyone else has been devastated by a creature having different defining features in dungeon meshi than like childhood stories
bc i adore this series (i am showing So Much restraint not reading the manga and watching it with my family as it comes out) but the kelpie my beloved
her hooves were not backwards and its killing me (kelpies were the closest i got to being a horse girl as a kid)
Tumblr media
the seaweed is very nice and accurate (i say this as if ive seen a kelpie (not the dog) in real life) relating to the stories where the kelpie is made of seaweed or the shifter stories where it becomes a handsome young man with an unsettling amount of seaweed or sand in his hair
and the tail is a very cool nod towards it being a sea (limnistic? is that a word? relating to rivers and lakes) creature but the defining traits are that shes got backwards hooves and shes probably sticky when you pat her
like ik itd probably be hard to animate backwards hooves but aaaaa (expression of misapplied and disproportionate injustice and disappointment)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at how fancy they are (((right picture from ben-the-hyena here on tumblr they did a whole series of drawings of mythological horses as carousels and its so pretty))) (image on the left is described as a nykur which to my knowledge is a similar icelandic water spirit )
((also vaguely disappointed she didnt try to get the others on her back to show off her cool elongation abilities for maximum snack collection but thats not the point i was trying to focus on here))

Senshiii I get your emotions but that was a wild animal. She quite possibly did genuinely like you. They don't all think like us.

Watching the Dungeon Meshi anime and Laios is really sweet? Whenever someone, usually Marcille, is having a bad time emotionally he's really patient and nice with them. Hilarious though that Chilchuck is pulling him aside almost every episode for a scolding though.

Dungeon Meshi Ch14- The Kelpie, when you were a mythology kid
Tumblr media
"That's a Kelpie."
Tumblr media
"No, she's not, that's a kelpie, kelpies are ravenous beasts. Stop whatever you're doing, Senshi."
Tumblr media
"Yes, they're omnivores that lure people onto their backs, drown them, and eat them."
Tumblr media
"Senshi, no. That is exactly what a Kelpie wants someone to do so it can eat them. You will get eaten."
Tumblr media
"Listen to the boy! When the monsterfetishistlover thinks its a bad idea, the man who reads about monsters in his free time, it's a bad idea."
Tumblr media
"Senshi. Stop. Get off while you can. If you can. You're an idiot. Fucking stop this idiocy."
Tumblr media
"Get that fucking shocked look off your face, Senshi, this is what kelpies do. You literally did this to yourself. Because you're an idiot."
Tumblr media
"SENSHI. THAT'S JUST WHAT KELPIES DO. THEY'RE NOT MAGICAL WATER HORSES, THEY'RE SHAPECHANGING MONSTERS THAT TAKE ON THE FORM OF A HORSE TO LURE DRUNKEN IDIOTS ONTO THEIR BACKS. THIS IS LIKE SAYING 'I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THAT DRAGON BURNED DOWN A VILLAGE AND TOOK OUR SHEEP.' IT'S WHAT THEY DO. YOU'RE LUCKY YOUR PARTY DIDN'T CONSIDER YOUR DEATH TO BE THE JUST CONSEQUENCE OF YOUR IDIOCY, AND SAVED YOU."

a mermaid scene for mermay!!!!!
i decided to illustrate some of my favourite lines from this video: an ròn/ann an caolas od odrum by julie fowlis !!! (i put them under the cut in case ur not interested lmao 🤣🤣)
ann an caolas od odrum --- in the od odrum strait
far an caidleadh an ròn --- where the seals sleep
far nach cluinnte guth duine --- where no human voice is heard
ach fuaim tuinne 's glog geòidh --- but the sound of the waves and the cries of geese
an ròn rìoghail a' gusgail --- the regal seal wails
an eala guileag ri thaobh --- the swan warbling by his side
a' mhaighdean-mhara 's i bruadar --- the mermaid is dreaming
anns an uaigneas air laoch --- of a hero in her solitude
as always, if u'd like to have all the lyrics, pls just ask!! i'll be happy to share them with anyone!! 😊😊😊

One thing I adore about the dungeon meshi kelpie arc is how it delineates the difference between “trained” and “tame” SO WELL. Anne the kelpie was nice around senshi, because he fed her and was always respectful. She was trained to not attack him, effectively. But she’s still a monster/wild animal, so the moment he showed “weakness” by trying to ride her, her instincts kicked in and she attacked. And. You’d think Laois, the resident animal lover, would be upset about having to kill a seemingly tame monster. But he suggests it first. He’s not just an animal lover, he’s a biology nerd, SO HE KNOWS ITS UNSAFE TO BE SO BUDDY BUDDY WITH A CARNIVOROUS WILD ANIMAL!
