Check out my part of the zeldacreators Spirit Tracks themed Discord Banner!
Tumblr media
Here you see: - The spirit of Tetra (not as she would have looked like before death, but simply taking on the form of her young adult self)
Tumblr media
- Anjean (The way we see her in-game)
Tumblr media
Both show up together, still hanging out after life has passed for one of them, since they are such good besties.
For Tetra I ended up going with something that looks like a royal uniform, to fit her role as leader of New Hyrule, but also her pirate captain self.

Looking Back: Spirit Tracks over 10 years later
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was my very first official video game ever. I was first introduced to LoZ through my cousin. So, for Christmas, I was gifted with a DSI and Spirit Tracks plus Phantom Hourglass. Since the first time I popped that cartridge in, I knew Spirit Tracks was going to be something special. I was mesmerized by the world, the music, and the characters. As I played more and more Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, Spirit Tracks became that fun, little game I played as a child. However, that little game always had a special place in my heart. Playing it now, for the first time since I lost my original DS and copy of the game in 2019, it still remains my favorite.
The world: The world of Spirit Tracks to me is breathtaking. This world feels so real to me. There is so much to explore. Yeah, the train can be tedious, but aside from that the map is huge. Skyward Sword feels so limiting in what you can explore. And don't me wrong, I love Hyrule field, but even that feels small to me at times. Twilight Princess has the best Hyrule field of the older games. Spirit Tracks has so many places to explore. Although the villages aren't, I still appreciate the unique design of all of them.
Tumblr media
The dungeons: While the dungeons or bosses in this game will never be as grand as the Ancient Cistern or spooky as Arbiter's Grounds, I still adore them. To me, they are what dungeons should be: challenging with fun puzzles. And that's the key word here: fun. These dungeons do a great job implementing the puzzles and items collected. I love how the Tower of Spirits continues to get challenge your puzzle-solving skills. The bosses also are just fun adventures for Link to take on. They don't need to be crazy or super grand because this game is meant to be a fun, little adventure.
The characters: We could argue which game has the best characters for hours (it's Skyward Sword stop arguing). That being said, I say Spirit Tracks has some really great characters. The Lokomos are all unique, Cole is a delightful little menace, and Byrne stole my heart. Thanks the the side quests, we do get some pretty fun interactions with the various npcs throughout the game. I love the teacher who has to disguise himself to get out of the castle. The rabbit man and his wife make for a cute romance story. And Ferrus is just a jolly man who loves trains. It's a great cast.
This game also has one of my favorite versions of Zelda. Just like with Skyward Sword, Spirit Tracks does a great job setting up her relationship with Link. Their relationship is so genuine and wholesome. They're friends who may pursue a romantic relationship when they're older. It's that good. They also gave Zelda a personality and stuff to do other than show up for the first and last few minutes to dump exposition. Y’all want playable Zelda? Well, here she is! She's adventurous, funny, caring, and feisty. There's so much life to her. She helps Link as much as she can and is a way better companion than Navi ever could be. Zelda is amazing. Her interactions with Link are stellar. I also love that the game shows just how much the two of them love and care for each other. Link and Zelda are perfect.
And yes, Byrne was my first fictional crush. It's his design I tell you. I love broody, tall men. It's that simple. But also, he does have a great arc. He becomes evil because he wanted power. Yet, he still had a soft spot for Anjean. After he's betrayed, he realizes the horrible truth and decides to help the heroes. Thanks to Anjean and Zelda's forgiving nature, they take Byrne in and help him. In turn, it is he who helps Zelda reclaim her body and gives his life. He's wonderful *sigh*.
The music: Spirit Tracks has some of the best Zelda music in my opinion and it's sad that it gets overlooked by like... every other game. I will be brutally honest, I genuinely don't remember any of the music from BotW or TotK. I'm sorry, that's the truth. But, I always remembered Spirit Tracks' music. From the upbeat title theme to Byrne's unique leitmotif, the music has always been fun. Cole's theme is one of my personal fave villain tracks. I love the music changes as you ascend the Tower of Spirits. I love the Lokomo songs even if the flute mechanic was a tad annoying at times. I love the Demon Train's intimidating theme. The Dark Train's leitmotif was the og anxiety bringer way before the guardians were even a thing.
Tumblr media
The Story: I also adore the story of this game. When an ancient evil strikes, Link, Zelda, and co. must rally to save the day. I like that the train in this game actually has a meaning. It's not just a means of transportation; the tracks have magic in them that protect the world from demons. It's simple but effective. There are fun side quests that are optional but yield satisfying rewards and nothing feels too repetitive. In short, it's great. One thing I really appreciated was that Zelda couldn't just enter her body right away. She had to focus her power. It makes the game more interesting. And it’s one of the only Zelda games where she basically dies. This game has stakes!!!Byrne's death shows that there are consequences for one's actions and sacrifices that must be made. Saving the world isn't an easy path. Overall, I think it's a fun and effective story.
The Downsides: Obviously, it's not a perfect game. The flute mechanics are frustrating at times, especially when playing the Lokomo songs. I can't begin to tell you how annoying it is when you play everything right and the game still says retry. The train can also be a bit tedious. It does take time to get from place to place. At least the game isn't rushing you. Thankfully, the portals and force gems help make the journey more bearable. Finally, Malladus isn't that memorable of villain when compared to Demise or Ganondorf. Even Cole is more memorable and he's the secondary antagonist. The design of him sucks and isn't screaming "demon king" at all. That being said, Malladus' actions do standout. His murder of Byrne and using Cole as a vessel without the latter's consent are legit great moments. It does establish his cruelty and willingness to do whatever necessary to win. Also, Possessed Zelda is freaky.
If y'all made it to the end of this post, congrats. I know I'm in the minority when I say Spirit Tracks is my fave Zelda game, but I'll defend it nonetheless. It's a cute and wonderful game. I'm excited to replay it again in the near future. For now, I'll continue to listen to the music. I love this game so much guys.

Did Anjean ever even meet the Hero of Winds? She’ll talk Zelda’s ear off about how she was friends with Tetra, but doesn’t even mention knowing someone who looked and dressed the exact same as Link.

the reason anjean even knows about lokomo reincarnation is that, well, she's witnessed it firsthand. byrne, the lokomo of shadow -- he fell prey to a demon, and was reborn into anjean's care.
no lokomo had ever had an apprentice, or anyone they needed to teach before, but anjean did her best. after all, he was still her old friend, even if he knew her differently now. and when he left, tainted by desire for power, it hurt. she felt like she had failed.
quietly, after treating his wounds on the spirit train, anjean told byrne just who the demon that killed him the first time was. and how afraid she was... that he had killed him a second.
(in the end, when all the demons are gone, and the evil is purged, she departs for the heavens in the company of her old friend byrne.)

"Byrne may not have any memory of these events, but years from now, he'll return in a new form." - Anjean, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Byrne's Rails of the Realm concept! Really proud of his design, but man is the Yiga outfit complicated (and I didn't do any favors to myself with that arm...)

LINK, FROM OUTSET ISLAND Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Hyrule Warriors
[From my original Linkverse, That Broken Promise]
GENDER: Male (amab) PRONOUNS: He/Him HEIGHT: 5'1" AGE: 22 HEALTH: Mostly blind [macular degeneration], severe flogging scars
WEAPONS: Staff, Seabreeze Boomerang ITEMS: Telescope, Grappling Hook, Power bracelets SPELLS: Magic Armour
On his twelfth birthday, Outset crossed paths with the Helmaroc King when it kidnapped his little sister. With the help of Tetra, he met the King of Red Lions who was the transformed King of Hyrule from the distant past. He opened the Tower of the Gods, retrieved and revived the Master Sword, and defeated Ganondorf with Tetra's aid beneath the seas. After, he left his home with her and was drawn into saving Oshus, the Ocean King, from the predation of Bellum before they made their way to new lands. However, their first landing ended in disaster with the Admiral of Gamelon attempting to kill him. They retreated to “cursed” lands nearby, under the watchful eye of the Lokomo Anjean where they stayed while he recovered. His recovery, however, was interrupted and he and Tetra were both drawn into the timeline holes created by Cia’s near death. They gave what aid they could, given his condition, and before too much time had passed they could return to their new lands.
Outset is a gregarious, fiercely independent person who is loathe to admit his limitations. He will try anything that seems fun, and only ask for help after he's started nine times out of ten. While he and Tetra founded New Hyrule, they were only so many people. At present, they’re focused on bringing people back and often they get sidetracked by random whim.
Outset speaks easily and is technically literate, but he can no longer see well enough to read or write. He also does not know, nor see well enough to understand sign language most of the time.
Outset is mostly interested in women but is game to try almost anything. He is a little shy about new people and picky about how they treat him with regards to his blindness. He’s never had a serious relationship, and he and Tetra have only recently gotten over a long fight about her feelings of guilt about when he lost his sight.
CURRENT MEDIA: Though There Be Fury On The Waves, rated E for violence Two WIP
Songs from the playlist for Outset: Go The Distance, by Michael Bolton Sea of No Cares, by Great Big Sea Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely), by P!nk

now. totally 100٪ picked at random,,, spirit tracks? (or skyward sword if youve already gotten that one)
Ok tumblr deleted my giant ramble about Spotify tracks so take two 🙄
If you didn’t like phantom hourglass I implore you to try spirit tracks because it fixes all the issues I have with phantom hourglass. The music is PHENOMENAL, the world is so diverse and vibrant, the different towns are fun and the side quests helps you connect with them more, and overall it’s filled with charm. Zelda and Link easily have the best Zelda and Link relationship and they bounce off of each other super well! This Zelda to me is so complex and interesting and I adore her so much! The story is good, Anjean is wonderful, Byrne is fascinating, and everything is so wonderful. I love this game so much, I almost played through all of it in four days! I injured myself doing that! That’s how good it is!
Now it does have flaws, some parts of this game are so hard that it actually makes me mad lol. The sand temple and the item you get are AWFUL, and I’ve been stuck on the final boss for a year now 😔 I haven’t finished it so I can’t talk about the ending unfortunately, but yeah…. I also kinda wish the descendants could a little bit more love. Like Alfonzo looking a bit different than Gonzo besides the outfit, Zelda having a different design, Linebeck III being more than Linebeck with a hat. Like Joynas gets this treatment perfectly why can’t everyone else get that 😞 I also kinda wish Linebeck III was more than a cameo cuz Linebeck was so important to Phantom hourglass, but that’s just cuz I’m insane for Linebeck. And lastly, Byrne is wasted potential to me :( I wish we got to see him develop more cuz I feel like he didn’t get the amount he needed you know? It’s a shame cuz he’s super cool!
But yeah, haven’t finished it yet but I’ve played most of it where I feel like I can talk about it lol.

OHOHOHOHOHO THIS IS A WHOLE AU???? This is INCREDIBLE my heart is MELTING LOOK AT THOSE SWEETIES!!! A thought to keep Wind away from the Tower of Spirits, in the Septimus Heap books there’s a rule where “when dead you only tread once more; where living, you have trod before” so perhaps Wind being a natural ghost unlike Zelda isn’t able to go above the lobby of the Tower. Cause let’s be real, he would totally go through the dungeons but Anjean would have his hide if he tried to go up the Tower.
Also, is this LU? Totally cool if not! Just the two of them having fun together is enough to get me bouncing off the walls!
Ooooo a lot to unpack with this one!
First of all, THANK YOU! I’m so happy that you love the au!! I’m having so much fun making it, so I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
Tumblr media
Next, I’m gonna answer the LU question because that answer is going to be shorter.
Honestly, I’m kind of glad you asked because I’ve seen people mention it a few times in comments, reblog tags, etc of some of my AU posts before, which made me wonder if there was some confusion about it. So, I’m glad I’m getting an excuse to clear this up.
While LU is super great (seriously go check it out if you haven’t) and I am incredibly honored that you think they are worthy of standing together on the same playing field, it is a separate thing.
The Wind’s Track AU is not associated with Linked Universe in any way. That is to say: in the “canon” of The Winds Track AU, the events of Linked Universe DO NOT AND WILL NOT EXIST.
Of course, if y’all want to make fan content that is a blend of the two AUs, that’s fine with me. All I ask is that, if you could, please make it clear somewhere that, normally, the AUs are separate entities to avoid any confusion for people who don’t know. Also, it’d be really nice if you’d give credit to the au creators so newcomers know where to find our AUs. (Also tag me so I can see it 👀🤭)
Again, I don’t mind if people make that kind of content to combine the aus, but I would hate for people to come here expecting LU due to miscommunication and then not get it. Y’know?
Now, I can talk about Wind and the Tower of Spirits.
I never actually considered him NOT being involved in solving the floors. The idea that he CAN’T is REALLY INTERESTING. Ohhhh that’d kill him inside.
This boy is so used to being at the center of the adventures, and now he has to leave it to someone else? AND HIS LITTLE BROTHER AT THAT?? AND YOU MEAN TO TELL HIM HE CANT DO ANYTHING BUT WAIT??? OHHHH.
Not to mention the fact that this is the location in the game that you revisit the most for the story.
The way I can picture this poor boy ready to just race up those stairs, regardless of potential consequences. Anjean would probably be tempted to tie him down if he wouldn’t just phase through the ropes.
I LOVE THIS IDEA. Not only is it angsty, but it fixes so many of the potential issues I’ve been trying to solve within this AU.
I don’t think I mentioned this before, but I was also trying to figure out a way to get Zelda to go help in the Tower of Spirits in the first place. The only reasons she goes at first in the game is because Anjean tells them that it’s too dangerous for Link / Spirit to go by himself, and during that time, she is the only one available to fill that role. If Wind were able to go, then there wouldn’t have been any reason to essentially force her in the role. There would need to be a new reason made.
This idea, however, FIXES THAT. THANK YOU!!
I also love that it reserves a portion of the game’s events to just be for Spirit and Zelda. They have such a wonderful relationship in the game, so having the events of the Tower be for just the two of them could really help in maintaining that strong bond that helped make Spirit Tracks so special.
I’ll make a point to find ways for Wind to be more helpful in other parts of the game to make up for his exclusion from the Tower of Spirits’ floors.

Spirit Tracks and the Mind-Body Connection
In anticipation for Tears of the Kingdom I have been replaying Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Despite its flaws, Spirit Tracks is probably one of my top Zelda games.
I think there is something really intriguing about ghost Zelda’s anxieties around losing her body and occupying new “bodies,” ie: the Phantom Armor.  I was trying to think about why these themes really resonate with me. I am not trying to interpret author’s intent, this is just my own interpretation of the imagery in the game. Maybe it can help you see it in a new way!
A lot of Zelda games are directly or indirectly about the Triforce. Link usually begins from a humble position, all he has is courage to face the challenges presented to him. The challenges he faces are puzzles and combat, representing wisdom and power. This is Link developing into a balanced character, and returning the world to a peaceful state. The problem with Ganondorf is not his pursuit of power, it is that he does not balance those things with courage and wisdom. Spirit Tracks is about how Zelda’s wisdom is not balanced with courage and power!
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the game, Chancellor Cole has imprisoned Zelda in her own castle.
If we see the kingdom as a metaphor for the body, and the ruler is the mind controlling the body, Zelda’s inability to leave the castle is the mind being disconnected from the rest of the body. Zelda is already a “ghost” before actually becoming one.
Zelda’s body is taken to the top of the Spirit Tower, and the tower is broken into segments. Anjean explains that the tower connects the kingdom with spirit tracks. Restoring the tracks reconnects the land to the tower, enabling Zelda to connect her mind to her body again. The story of Spirit Tracks, then, is Zelda’s literal and metaphorical journey to reconnect mind and body.
Tumblr media
As a ghost, Zelda frequently uses sensory descriptors like “damp,” “hot,” and “cold”, despite the fact that she can’t feel these things without a body. I think it suggests that she wasn’t feeling them much in the first place. Zelda intellectualizes instead of feeling her feelings, so she almost treats them like a performance.
Intellectualization is blocking out or ignoring the emotional side of a problem, and instead, viewing it in a completely rational or intellectual manner by only comprehending the facts around it . This spares the individual of the anxiety and stress of dealing with the emotions, focusing instead on the cold facts. Intellectualization can help us solve problems and understand situations, but it may also leave us emotionally disconnected.
Trauma victims often experience this kind of brain/body disconnection.  Shutting off areas of the brain becomes a way to cope and survive. This can result in a loss of self-recognition and self experience.
Tumblr media
I think this is just kind of a funny/sad moment of Zelda realizing the ways in which she wasn’t appreciating her body when she had it.
All iterations of Zelda depend on their intellectual intelligence to make sense of things and navigate the world around them. I think that Zelda in Spirit Tracks is specifically preoccupied with using her intelligence to seek safety and security, so that she can be prepared for problems. Her fear is being unprepared and unable to defend herself from danger. Her path to healing is about confronting those fears.
(So, at the beginning of the game we have planning prepared Zelda. She uses the graduation ceremony as a cover to get Link to sneak her out to the tower, and has planned everything nearly perfectly. Her anxiety comes from being in a situation where she can’t plan ahead, but she also feels invigorated and recharged when there are plans, like going to the temples to reconnect the tower. A lot of her “prissiness” comes from missing the things that gave her life a comfortable routine.)
Tumblr media
When Anjean suggests Zelda travel with Link, Zelda initially wants to stay behind, saying “That’s what princesses have always done. From what I understand, its kind of a family tradition.”
Personas are a Jungian concept, they are the masks we wear which enable us to be seen and identified by others.  At the beginning, Zelda may be identifying too strongly with her “Princess” persona. This is a sign of her own stunted psychological development- she doesn’t have a strong sense of self outside her persona, and can’t imagine a personal capacity to act outside that role.
When she loses her body the persona disintegrates, initially throwing her into disorienting chaos. The journey through the Spirit Tower is a quest through the labyrinth of subconscious to find Zelda’s authenticity. Restoring the rails is restoring a mind-body connection as well.
Tumblr media
On her journey, Zelda adopts a new, temporary persona - the Phantom Armor. The phantom armor addresses all of her previous anxieties - she is well-defended to the point of being indestructible, and has the strength to fight monsters and protect Link. Its a persona that initially feels inauthentic,  but it finally allows her space to explore herself, build a partnership with Link, and connect with her true self. Together, Link and Zelda work their way up the tower and reconnect with her body.
I think its worth noting that Link also goes through a new persona when Zelda gives him the palace guard uniform. Towards the end, Zelda asks  if after this Link will become a warrior, an engineer, or something else.
Tumblr media
But they are too late, and Malladus occupies Zelda’s body. If  an extreme, one-sided tendency dominates the conscious life, a strong counter-tendency can build and break through conscious control. Enantiodromia is the emergence of the unconscious opposite. In this case, the shadow-self. The shadow is what Jung called  the unconscious and hidden parts of our personality, the rejected material from the ego and persona of t he conscious mind. The things we hate about ourselves.
Tumblr media
When they finally get the demon Malladus out of Zelda’s body, it still isn’t enough. Zelda’s body doesn’t recognize her, and she passes right through it.
Most talk therapy uses “top-down” processing- focusing on our thoughts and l logical mind. But this can be difficult when your body is dysregulated due to trauma. “Bottom-up” processing allows the trauma symptoms in the body to be processed and the nervous system to be regulated, and allows the pre-frontal cortex to gradually come online.
Zelda cannot reconnect to her body with thinking or logic. She must concentrate on the sacred power within her body to reconnect with it.
Tumblr media
In the end, Zelda reconnects with her body, and develops a more flexible persona. She is now confidently fighting side-by-side with Link instead of project coordinating from the sidelines. Zelda’s triforce may be wisdom, but her powers come from her body. And to show that she is now fully connected mind with body, Zelda now has access to her sacred powers. At the end, Link and Zelda come together to stab Malladus. What a trip! Peace and love restored to New Hyrule.
If I have the energy, I might write about how I interpret this game through a queer lens. Ok goodnight!
