I have a really weird relationship with gift art. Truth be told, I've often felt like it's an obligation rather than something I can do freely whenever I want. I have met so many wonderful people over the course of my life, and many of them are people I'm glad to call my friends. Some have even reached the status of close friends. But the downside is that because I know so many amazing people, I simply do not have the time, energy, or drive to draw for all of them. Sometimes it's because I'm busy and have a lot on my plate. I don't draw as much as I used to because I'm exhausted, and my feet are wet in so many mediums that it's hard to dedicate as much time to illustration for myself, much less for other people. Sometimes the characters they have aren't something that translates well into my style or skill level. Sometimes I'm more into hearing them be excited about the thing than I am the thing itself. All of those things are valid, I'm not obligated to draw or create for everyone. I hope that spending quality time with me is enough, the conversations we have, the laughs we share, I hope those are enough of a gift for people.
I worried for the longest time that if I went and drew for one person but not another, feelings would be hurt. I started to feel like I "owed" everyone, and at a certain point, it became easier to draw for no one rather than for just the few. No one could be hurt if I treated everyone the same, right? Well no, people will still find ways to be hurt. Many don't mean to, some have good intentions, and some do not. There have been many people in my lifetime that felt entitled to my time, attention, affection, and art, even when I don't draw for anybody. Some of them are people who have created something for me, and some are people who have used me. It's happened with my drawings, my voice, my writing, all of it.
I don't know how much this comes across, but I give a lot of myself, sometimes too much. I try very hard to make sure I have enough to go around with my time, attention, affection, etc, and it's hard. Sometimes I don't exist for myself, sometimes I give too much and don't live for my own sake. I don't come from anywhere strange though. The whole theme of my dad's funeral was that he lived a life of service, and so many people came that had their lives changed by the things he did. Sometimes he worked himself too hard, and while I admire what he did, I hope he got to live enough of his life the way he wanted. I hope he had a better balance about give and take than I do that I don't know about. I love my dad a lot. You know what he said to me, over and over? "Go live your life." He told me I had so many wonderful gifts, and the right people will appreciate them when they get to know me. I was so worried that no one would want me for me growing up, that I'm only as good as the skills I can bring to the table. It was really important for me to hear that I am more than my skills, because my gifts aren't just things I do, they're things that are a part of me.
And you know what? He's right. I think, the friends that I have now, the ones who care about me and get me? They get that I only have so much bandwidth and aren't gonna take my lack of art as a slight. The people who really know me and love me don't keep me around because of what I can do for them, they like having me because I'm an enjoyable, interesting person to be around.
And for the first time in my life, I feel a little bit safer daring to draw something for someone else. I joined Art Fight this year to help me work through some of those complicated feelings, improve my skills with traditional line art, and draw something nice for my friends, and I'm so glad I have. Every person I've drawn for has been so incredibly thankful and sweet about the things I've made for them, and it fills my heart with so much joy. My work may not be the fanciest thing any of them receive this year, but it's filled with heart, and I think that shows. Likewise, I have been incredibly thankful for every piece that people have done for me. I've gushed to each and every artist in DMs and servers and comments on the site and social media to let them know they did an amazing job. I want all of them to feel the love! I didn't expect to get attacked period, nor for the characters that have gotten attacks to get the kind of attention they did, and it's made my heart feel so full and warm. Like, y'all didn't have to say such nice things about my stories and designs, but you did and I'm not over it, aaaahhhh!
Having a format where I can show my love that's got easy ways to make my boundaries clear has been really helpful. I like that I have clear guidelines for what people are hoping for for art too, it makes it easier to figure out what's a good match for how I do things so I can really make someone's day. I've made it very apparent that I won't be doing revenge attacks for everyone, and no one is being mean to me about it. That is a good feeling. This is just, really really good. I'm glad to be doing this. It's gonna be okay. I'm just, so relieved. This is okay. I'm okay. I'm free.

thank you so much for requesting Heathie! I hope you enjoy this fluff. it’s the last fluff you’ll be gettin from me hehehehe
Tumblr media
The brisk cool air fights its way through every crevice in your two-sizes-too-big olive green overcoat as you desperately attempt to walk faster towards the movie theater. Your shoulders are hunched so high they’re almost touching your ears as you try to maintain your body heat. Who’s wise idea was it to make any plans that involved stepping outside in late winter? You just hope the movie theater lobby is warm.
The sun has long since laid to rest upon the horizon and, finally, you’re standing under the cheap yellow lights that display the current showings. The line isn’t too long, thank goodness, so you’ll only have to stand outside just a little bit longer before you can get the feeling back in your fingertips and nose.
As you wait in line, you can’t help but feel awkward standing there alone, the people around you freely chatting with their family members and friends or their dates. It shouldn’t worry you too much, you know that deep down, but standing alone in a crowd of people has always left you feeling out of place. Thankfully, your friends shouldn’t be too long now.
Ten minutes go by and it’s finally your turn to purchase a ticket at the booth. Before approaching the teller, you take one last hopeful look behind you, but all you see are unfamiliar faces.
You can’t help the droop of your shoulders as you trudge your feet across the pavement, mumbling a pathetic, “One ticket please,” as you stare at your beat up sneakers.
“Sure! For which movie?”
You wince and shut your eyes for a moment, mentally cursing yourself for not preparing this while you had all that time in line. Your friends specifically said they would pick the movie, as per tradition in the group where one person chooses a movie and the rest follow along like a herd of sheep following its shepherd. It’s supposed to be Choa’s turn tonight.
“I-uh, uhm,” you take a deep breath only to lose it in a millisecond as you look up at the man standing behind the counter. He’s absolutely gorgeous and appears to be close to your age. Blonde hair has never looked so good on a man, especially contrasted against the drag grey background of the booth along with his black polo. He has a soft, kind smile that tweaks just a bit larger as he takes his pointer finger to casually push back his black framed glasses back into place.
Seeing your flustered reaction, he moves his microphone away from his mouth and leans in closer to the window, his body weight supported by the counter. “Are you okay?” Sincere worry sparkles in his golden brown eyes, glistening through the lens of his glasses.
Something about his demeanor and tone of voice calms you and you’re able to swallow back the lump of anxiety that was caught in your throat. Your shoulders relax and you shyly admit, “I was supposed to meet my friends here. They were going to pick out the movie. But I don’t think they’re going to show up.” Normally, this would be the part where you would flinch as someone laughs at you or calls you a freak for being stood up by your supposed friends. Instead, that kindness remains in the man’s eyes. It doesn’t even waver for a second.
“You do not seem like the kind of girl that would get stood up, let alone by people who are calling themselves your friends.” He turns around to look at the screen displaying the movie titles and showing times. The muscles in his back and shoulders shift as he readjusts his weight, those muscles now tightening in all the best ways as his finger points to the screen. And that’s when you see the light reflect off of something on his shirt. It’s a name tag. And it reads ‘Yoongi’. You mouth the name silently to yourself and smile, nearly drifting into dreamland as he’s naming off different movies to you. The only thing that brought you back to reality was someone bumping into your back as they walked past you.
“Any of them sound appealing to you?” He asked, turning back to you.
Well, something definitely looks appealing to you right now.
“I’m not sure,” you chuckle softly, “do you...have any personal recommendations?”
Yoongi, you hope that’s his real name and not someone else’s name tag he’s borrowing, looks to his left and right before leaning in close to the cheap glass separating you two from one another.
“There’s actually this feel-good rom-com that just came out the other day. People have been saying it’s really good.” He pauses and looks away from you, puffing out his cheeks as they start to turn a light shade of pink and using his pointer finger to draw invisible shapes onto the counter. “Would you...maybe....want to wait another fifteen minutes? That’s when my shift is over and it’s right before the 9’oclock showing. So I could go with you-if you want! I wouldn’t want you sitting all alone and bummed out in a movie theater. Unless! That’s what you want!”
Your cheeks hurt from how much you’re trying to suppress what has to be the biggest smile you’ve ever displayed on your face. You watch the cute boy stammer and steal glances at you as he continues to babble on about who even knows what at this point. A boy has never flirted with you like this before. At least, you hope he’s flirting.
“I wouldn’t mind waiting at all.” Your body naturally sways back and forth with the wind, but this time, you don’t feel cold at all.
The line behind you has completely dispersed and the other teller signals at Yoongi to let him know she will be taking her break before he’s off for the night.
“Here, I’ll sneak you in so you can get warm.” He ushers you towards the side of the building where an outside door resides.
For the next fifteen minutes you get to know your date. And yes, right away he asked if it was alright with you if he could upgrade his movie theatre companion role to the role as your date for the night. How could you not agree? You sat in the corner of the booth, perfectly out of sight to any approaching customers, watching as Yoongi smiled at every single person while wishing them an enjoyable night. As soon as the customers left, his attention immediately went back to you.
All too soon, his coworker comes back, not even glancing at you as you remained huddled in the corner. Yoongi laughs and turns to you, his smile widening.
“Time to clock out!” He jumps off his stool and stretches his hand out to help you stand. His skin is soft against your hand and you marvel at the warmth that overcomes your fingertips as he perfectly rotates his hand to interlock his fingers with yours. Smooth.
Yoongi doesn’t let go of your hand as he manually types in his employee number into the time clock. As he’s doing this, your phone vibrates in your coat pocket. You take it out and see over fifteen messages from your friends that you were supposed to meet tonight:
[Choa: Y/n? Where are you?]
[Hoseok: You were supposed to be here twenty minutes ago...are you coming?]
[Minhyuk: Sowon you remembered to tell her which movie theatre we were going to right? That we’re not meeting at our usual spot downtown?]
[Sowon: ….crap]

Akiba Souken Interview with Jizue
Tumblr media
On the original soundtrack of “Hoshiai no Sora”, which demonstrated the uniqueness of Jizue.
The ones who composed the soundtrack of the TV anime “Hoshiai no Sora” were the instrumental band Jizue, which is based in Kyoto and widely active both nationwide and overseas. It is said that they, who claim to have always wanted to work with video, encountered “Hoshiai no Sora” due to a certain coincidence. Their music, which is pleasant to hear despite being so technical, draws the youthful patterns of a soft tennis club, matching splendidly with the worldview of “Hoshiai no Sora” as it approaches the emotions of middle school students. We have asked members Inoue Norimasa-san and Katagi Kie-san about the soundtrack CD, released on December 25th 2019.
Raw || Index ||  Ko-fi/PayPal ( ╹◡╹)っ’・*
Being provided with an environment where they could unleash the uniqueness of Jizue.
——Jizue is a band with a long career, right?
Inoue: We used to be a song band at first, but it has been thirteen years that we became an instrumental one.
——Why did you decide to be an instrumental band?
Inoue: Counting with the drummer who has left the band by now, we, the three male members, were childhood friends from grade school. We had always been a song band, but we sensed limitations somewhere along the way, so we decided to create cool sounds with just our instruments. Then, we started wanting a pianist, so we added in (Katagi) Kie-chan, who was an acquaintance of our drummer.
Katagi: I was always alone, playing from classics and jazz to pop, so Jizue was the first band I ever joined. Since it is an instrumental band, so I could play the piano as much as I wanted, and it is really fun to build up strength by overlapping with the other instruments.
——Instrumental bands have an image of talent to them, so hasn’t this genre been on a rise in the past years?
Inoue: I do not know whether it has been on a rise or not, but many cool instrumental bands have been around since the time when we started ours, and in comparison to before, I think this genre has been receiving more recognition lately.
Katagi: Instrumental bands have been blending into regular rock festivals often, and costumers who got to know about the genre through soundtracks for doramas have been gathering up at live concerts.
——In these circumstances, Jizue started making music for animated works, right? How was it decided for you to be in charge of the “Hoshiai no Sora” soundtrack?
Inoue: This is something that we also only came to know about later, but the cue was that the director of the recording company happened to have listened to one of our songs, “March of Monkey”, by chance. Then, he looked up the band name and recommended us to the anime’s staff.
Katagi: We had made music for commercials before, but it was our first time working with a soundtrack, so we were happy.
Inoue: Like, “A soundtrack commission has finally come our way”. We were happy, but at the same time, we had no idea how to make it (laughs). At the first meeting, Director Akane said that he wanted us to create Jizue-like tracks without being too conscious of the anime’s worldview, so we were relieved.
——How was Director Akane’s first impression?
Inoue: There were no detailed orders like, “I want you to add a sound like this” or, “I want you to use a melody like that”, so I thought he was the kind of person who was going to let us create freely. The only thing that surprised me was when he told us to make forty or more short tracks, with one to two minutes of length for each. I wondered if people make that many tracks for an anime.
——I believe the specific orders for the tracks were made through a music menu. How was it?
Katagi: Yes, we received a menu. The emotions he wanted us to express through certain tracks were written there, together with their length and tempo, so it was a new way of ordering.
——Who wrote the compositions?
Inoue: I was mostly the one who did it. All the members of Jizue write tracks, but we thought had to bring out a sense of uniformity for the soundtrack, and that it was necessary to have someone take the initiative. So I allocated the members, asking Kie-chan to take care of the piano tracks.
Fast and clear melodies are one of the “flavors” of Jizue.
——How did you get into composing the tracks?
Inoue: There was an order from Director Akane for us to make a number of main songs, so we started from there. At first, we made three-minute tracks like usual and went on to consolidate their images. The initial tracks from the OST, “Ingenuity”, “W -Hoshiai no Sora-“, “slow and sure” and “heart rate”, were conceived like that.
——“W -Hoshiai no Sora” was also included in your latest album “gallery”, which you released July 2019, with the title “W”. Does that mean you already had this track from the very beginning?
Inoue: No, it is a song that we made from scratch for “Hoshiai no Sora” and we liked it a lot, so we asked permission to include it in our own album. “W” is a title we put on it with both the meaning “doubles” and of “versus”, as in fighting against an opponent, and it is a song that we made with the excitement and dizziness of a game match as its image.
——It is often used in the anime and is also the track that represents “Hoshiai no Sora”.
Katagi: When I watched it online, the comments would go, “Here it is~” in unison whenever “W -Hoshiai no Sora-“ started playing. That made me happy.
——Katagi-san’s high-speed piano is cool and I think everyone loves it.
Inoue: Melodies like that are one of Jizue’s quirks, so we thought we should use them in this soundtrack too, no matter what. Ever since the earlier stages, we have been adopting passages fast enough to make people go, “So they can play that much”. I believe that this gap of having clear melodies in-between is characteristic of Jizue, so for this time, I would write phrases that were, if anything, quick-paced, and would ask Kie-chan, “Can you play this?”.
Katagi: I played by practicing a lot (laughs). “W -Hoshiai no Sora-“ has a tense air to it and I think it is a cool track.
Inoue: The track is not just hard to play - there is a sense of liberation from the hook’s melody, so it resulted in a track that is easy to ride on. Not just the anime’s staff but also the people who watched the anime have liked these tracks that we made the way we wanted, so we have this feeling that we created good tunes.
——This time, when you were making the soundtrack, what did you have in mind?
Inoue: There are tracks in it that last less than a minute, so I had wondered for a moment if people would enjoy listening to such short ones, but when I listened to them in sequence when working on the mixing and mastering, they sounded amazingly good. If I had to tell you why, I would say it is the track’s feeling - there is this sensation that the feelings of the tracks we want people to listen to the most are lined up in rows. When I realized this, I found soundtracks to be fun.
——I believe there were tracks for depictions of everyday life that you would not normally make. How was it trying to produce these tracks?
Inoue: We made them enjoyably, without any resistance whatsoever. We had the desire to bring out the uniqueness of Jizue even in such tracks, so I think they turned out as slightly eccentric daily life tunes. For example, their tempo becomes irregular.
Katagi: Nori-chan is the genius type when it comes to songwriting. Just from him humming a tune that he came up with at random, the tempo becomes irregular, but you can listen to it without any sense of misplacement whatsoever, even when the time signature goes from seven to eight. He is also a recording engineer, so by the time he creates a melody, he already has an image of its sound as a whole in his head.
——So you have a clear vision of the final form from the initial phase of composition.
Inoue: I do. This specially applies to instrumental bands, but I believe that the coolness of a track changes greatly depending on its sound design.
——While Jizue’s compositions are complex music pieces backed by advanced techniques, I had the impression that they were easy for the ears to get familiar with.
Katagi: Normally, when we are creating them, we members have an unspoken consent to make the hook’s melody into something that people can sing to, no matter what. Beautiful things will definitely resound within people’s hearts, regardless of how difficult they might be, so we think it is good to put in such melodies.
Getting to create tracks that take a full swing on emotions due to being given a setting from the outside.
——I felt that the nature of Jizue’s music was a perfect fit for “Hoshiai no Sora”.
Inoue: It makes me happy when people who watched the anime think so. When making them, we wondered about how the sounds would go with the animation, but when we actually saw it on-air, they matched so well that even we were surprised. As expected of that anime’s staff, starting with the director. We made countless tracks for the games, but all of them were used in good ways, so since they match so well, I wanted to have made even more of them (laughs). As we made a soundtrack ourselves this time, I started paying attention to the soundtracks of other animes.
Katagi: We would look forward to every episode of “Hoshiai no Sora”. We were only told the story of the early stages, so we were curious about the continuation.
Inoue: We were told it would have not just a sense of youth but also pain, yet I had not imagined it would be this much of it (laughs).
Katagi: In the menu, there was a specification like “fear toward his father”. We made a dark song with just the piano, but when we watched the initial parts on-air, the dad turned out to be way worse than we had pictured.
Inoue: The episode about Itsuki-kun getting the burn marks on his back was a huge shock, and I was like, “You can’t do that to kids, no matter what!”. But the mother’s suffering was also conveyed and felt realistic. I got sad.
——This is a series where the amount of painful scenes is not small, so while making tracks for youthful scenes and heated-up tennis scenes, you also had to make sorrowful and disturbing ones.
Inoue: And make them we did. There are not such dark tracks amongst our usual ones, but I personally like melodies in minor a lot, so I made them without any resistance.
Katagi: We were able to shake off our emotions and create these tracks thanks to the setting being given to us from the outside, like how it went this time. We normally write tracks while picturing sceneries and stories that have moved our own hearts, but we had never made such worked-up feelings into the theme.
Inoue: It was interesting to make them by being granted a theme. And I was really happy to have a proper response and see them properly matching the animation.
——Who decided the track titles and order for the soundtrack CD?
Inoue: I decided on both. For the track order, firstly, I wanted to line up the tracks we made as the main themes of the series, going from the lighthearted tracks into the dark zone from that point on, and then make a beautiful flow toward the ending theme, “Kago no Naka no Bokura wa”. I really like the opening and ending themes of “Hoshiai no Sora”.
Katagi: I think coming up with titles for all thirty-four tracks was a hassle (laughs). You did a lot of research on English language when thinking about them, right?
Inoue: I thought they had to match the mood of the tracks no matter what. Also, there is a code hidden within the titles altogether.
Katagi: There is actually a meaning as to why there is upper case mixed with lower case.
Inoue: We hope people enjoy this too.
——Do you want to keep making anime soundtracks from now on too?
Inoue: We so do. If any anime’s staff calls to us, we want to do it right away (laughs). A discussion has been raised about us making a series by merging Jizue itself with animation, and there are many opportunities to deliver our music through video series collaborations with an apparently wide scope of people, so we would like to keep actively going at it in the future too.

Berlinale Film Festival 2021, Industry Event, Final Day
There was an added bonus to our originally scheduled plan for five days of press streamings. On the weekend following those five days, the winners of the Competition program would be available on Saturday, and the winners of the Encounters program would be available on Sunday. Winners from Generations and the Shorts programs would also get a second screening.
Since I’d made a point of seeing the Competition films, I decided to focus on the ones from the Encounters lineup that I hadn’t got a chance to see. (In case you’re wondering: here are the lists of award-winners for Competition, Encounters, Generations and Shorts.
First up was Lê Bảo’s Vị (TASTE), a film that cites six countries in helping with the production: Vietnam, Singapore, France, Thailand, Germany and Taiwan. It won the Special Jury Award in the Encounters program, and it’s not hard to see why. The film is legitimately striking; a bold visual poem about a Nigerian who comes to Saigon to play football, breaks his foot, and begins working a mysterious job with four middle-aged Vietnamese women. There isn’t much more plot than that, very little is explained, there’s hardly any dialog, but the film evokes a lot of different feelings through its artfully staged tableaus of bodies at motion and at rest. The color palette is severe — greys, blues, whites and rusty earth tones — but also beautiful. There is the periodic burst of sunshine that enters in through a window or doorway, and small splashes of color that come from the ingredients of the food they spend a lot of time preparing. But mostly, we’re in a chilly underground location that has little else besides a few beds and an old television.
It’s difficult to parse out the meaning of TASTE, but I’m not sure such an endeavor isn’t foolish. You could say there’s something about worker exploitation here, but if you squint and tilt your head, there could also be a message about the transcendence of work as well. Ultimately, this is an art film. It wouldn’t feel out of place in the halls of MOMA or wherever else you find eager minds for the abstract. One of the appealing things about the film is that it is freely open to interpretation and can be read in different ways. The only thing that’s for certain is that TASTE is about connections, those we make with our surroundings, our food, and those we work with. It’s about the ceremonies we create to forge those connections and help us through our days.
It’s not easy to make a film that truly feels like a dream. Sure, TASTE has a lot of unresolved mystery to it, but as a foray into dream logic, it is comfortably consistent in its mood and atmosphere. This is a plus and a minus, because TASTE is also quite effective in lulling you into a kind of heavy-lidded hypnosis. It taps into a very different part of your brain than the average movie.
The last feature film I caught up with was the newest film by Ramon Zürcher, this time co-directing and co-writing with his brother Silvan Zürcher. Ramon’s previous film, THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT, was a hit on the film festival circuit back in 2013. I still need to catch up with that one, and I will, even though I found little to enjoy in the Zürcher Brothers’ THE GIRL AND THE SPIDER.
The set-up is pretty interesting. Lisa, a young woman, is moving to a new apartment and leaving behind a few roommates. One of those roommates, Mara, isn’t taking it so well. In fact, she seems to be rather heartbroken and bitter — and maybe a little self-destructive. But mostly she seems to be intent on making barbed, passive-aggressive comments at Lisa and everyone who has the misfortune of getting close to her. You see, Mara is like a spider. She’s alluring and mysterious enough to draw you in, but once you get close, you just become trapped in her abusive mind games. As I mentioned, pretty solid set-up for a tricky, dark relationship movie. There’s something to it, and the movie kicks around the idea of lonely hurt people hurting other lonely hurt people, but we don’t get very far.
One problem is that as the movie goes on, and we meet the other roommates that Lisa is leaving behind, we start to get the idea that maybe Mara has always been this mean manipulator. Maybe her heartbreak over Lisa leaving isn’t that much of a motivator. Maybe her other roommates are also passive-aggressive emotionally damaged loose cannons. Why can’t anyone say what they mean? Must everyone be so aloof? Must every line of dialog cryptically dance around true feelings? Why must someone be eavesdropping behind a door during every other conversation? To me, it just comes across as sub-par writing. Before long, it felt like the only reason these people were talking this way was because if anyone spoke honestly the movie would be about 15 minutes long. Instead, it slowly drove me crazy over a very long 98 minutes.
Now, some of these choices are understandable. I’ve lived with roommates. I know that these situations can be passive-aggressive nightmares where no one feels comfortable enough to say what they really feel. This too, is a good set-up for a movie, with plenty of interesting angles to explore. But again, we only dance on the surface. None of the characters open up, everyone’s motivations are fuzzy. In the end, these people remain more or less as we found them. Mara comes closest to revealing a little bit about herself, but it’s all very frustrating. On a few occasions, the film takes detours, cutting away to visualize a story being told. Sometimes it involves an elderly eccentric neighbor in the building, other times it’s a fantasy about the previous owner of the piano that sits in the apartment. Immediately, the protagonists of these stories become way more compelling than the dreary twenty-somethings that we’re stuck with the rest of the time.
Aside from my issues with the writing, the movie looks great. The Zürcher’s have a good eye and they know how to observe misery while luxuriating in icy detachment like, say, Michael Haneke. There are also good rhythms going on here. From the little I know THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT, it would appear that Ramon Zürcher is still interested in capturing the details of interiors, and paying attention to the animals that are running around people’s feet. Scene’s often end with still-life portraits of items on tabletops, knocked over bottles, subtle signs of life and little punctuations upon the preceding scene. It’s a nice touch. I only wish those scenes told a more engaging story.
Thoroughly exhausted, with the last remaining hours of the streaming schedule dwindling away, there were a few award-winning shorts left to watch. Feeling like animation might be a nice change of pace, I went for EASTER EGGS, a Belgian/French/Netherlands production, written and directed by Nicolas Keppens. In some ways, it was a perfect little finale.
Even though EASTER EGGS could be a contemporary story, it feels like a tender look back, maybe some twenty years ago, at a painful teenage moment. It’s a story about two kids, Kevin the bully and Jason the enabler, and their woefully unhealthy friendship. There’s a vague plan to capture some valuable birds that were left behind when a local Chinese restaurant closed down — and there are some laughs to be had — but mostly it’s achingly sad to watch Jason pine for Kevin’s attention and approval, while Kevin just walks all over him. But given the gentle hand that this story is told with, that sadness is more poignant than depressing. Keppens shows a love and sensitivity for these characters. They’re way more than just some Belgian Beavis and Butthead. They represent something many of us have gone through in our youth — longing for friendship and someone to share your imaginative, ambitious plans with. It’s not exactly a feeling that goes away, which is why EASTER EGGS still carries a lot of weight.
Let me just add a few more thoughts to this First Round of 2021’s Berlinale Film Festival. Despite my longings for more time to spend with such a quality lineup of films, I’m impressed that everything went so smoothly. The streaming platform worked incredibly smoothly (even if it was a bummer I couldn’t cast that stream onto my TV), and the quality of the films was excellent — both in picture and sound as well as moviemaking craft. It wasn’t ideal, but it was great to be a part of. I’ll also take a sentence here to recommend visiting the Berlinale Meets page, as well as the video section, where there is an impressive collection of conversations with this year’s filmmakers for more viewing enjoyment.
While there’s a lot from this festival that I’m still hoping to see, judging from the Competition and Encounters films that I have seen, this was an exceptionally strong year for female voices and female-led stories. This was clearly one of the most impressive things about the 2021 Berlinale. PETITE MAMAN, A COP MOVIE, MEMORY BOX, I’M YOUR MAN, HERR BACHMAN, WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY, BALAD OF A WHITE COW, BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONEY PORN — each of these films, which are just from the Competition section, were either directed by a woman or told stories about women. In the case of WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY, there were three stories and three female protagonists. (You could probably make a case for adding WHAT DO WE SEE WHEN WE LOOK AT THE SKY?, but I digress...) And you know what, those were the best films in the main lineup. I’ll also throw in the strong entries in the ENCOUNTERS category, Dasha Nekrasova’s THE SCARY OF SIXTY-FIRST and the best film winner of the category Alice Diop’s NOUS (WE). Personally, I especially liked the connections between PETITE MAMAN and MEMORY BOX, which both dealt with making connections between mother and daughter in unique, cinematic ways. I hope this level of representation continues in the years to come.
Now, let’s keep our fingers crossed for Part Two of the Berlinale, the Summer Special. See you June 9th.

Congratulations Amos you’ve been accepted to Crimson Revolt as Gideon Prewett!
↳ please refer to our character checklist
First of all, I have to address that there’s a wonderful irony in accepting someone with the same name as my character in the rp. But honestly, your app was a delight to read -- the depth of exploration in your personification of Gideon absolutely beautiful. You left us with such a clear picture of the character, both in his backstory and in the potential future effects of the war, all while bringing through Gideon’s humor as well. We’re so thrilled to welcome you into the rp and can’t wait to see you explore all of the dimensions to Gideon that you presented in your app! *your FC change to Eddie Redmayne has been accepted!

OUT OF CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
Amos, 20, he/him, GMT
ACTIVITY
I won’t lie, I can get extremely busy, I am currently training at drama school in technical theatre, and some weeks it is manic, that being said, I have missed writing so much, and I have missed being part of an rp group even more, I am committed to making it part of my daily routine again. My uni work should calm down for the next couple of months and I really want to write as much as I can in that spare time. 5/10

HOW DID YOU FIND US?
I searched for HP RP in tumblr and your ad was one of the most recent posts, I had a click around your blog and really liked the look of you!
WHAT HARRY POTTER CHARACTER DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH MOST?
I am a Neville Longbottom through and through. I could be painfully awkward, self conscious, under confident, clumsy, making goofy mistakes, but in the last couple of years I think I’ve really come a long way. I’ve found my voice, and my confidence, I am happy with who I am as a person, and am no longer striving to be someone I’m not, I have recently decided to stop being so embarrassed all the effing time and just accept that sometimes I do silly things and it’s better just to laugh about it than worry over it for the next week. It has honestly enhanced my life. I’m still waiting on the magic physical transformation into a greek God though.
ANYTHING ELSE?
If there is anything in my app that doesn’t fit with your current Fabian’s headcanons and such, then I will be most happy to adapt if I got in and had a chance to speak with them!
IN CHARACTER
DESIRED CHARACTER
Gideon Prewett
FACE CLAIM
I would be happy to keep Ryan Gosling, although in Fabian’s bio it says the twins look exactly the same, so I would also be quite happy to take on Eddie Redmayne. I would quite like them to be identical, unless of course Beth would prefer them to be unidentical.
REASON FOR CHOSEN CHARACTER
I have been in love with the Prewett twins for a good couple of years now. I wrote Fabian in another rp for a long time and got very attached to him, although I have played both Fabian and Gideon at various different points. When I first started I thought every rps interpretation of the twins would be very different because there is so little on them in the books, but it turns out everyone has very similar ideas. I love that, I love that their character shines through those small details and through the legacy of their family in the books and through the reputation of the Order and through what we imagine the first wizarding war must have been like.
I love that they are essentially broken people trying so hard to make everyone else around them safe and happy, and I love that they are the kind of people who rebel against growing up. I do think it’s very important to see them as individuals, but I think their relationship with each other is one of their most essential qualities. I think it is what makes them unique characters to write. Even if you were writing other twins, I don’t think you’d have the same kind of experience. I think it’s that relationship that keeps drawing me back to them. Their personalities and their backstories, occupation, hair colour whatever, can change from rp to rp, and I love exploring each slightly new character, but most of all I love finding out how they interact with their twin, and what their priorities are during the war, and what lengths they are willing to go for their family.
I think my interpretation of Gid in this rp, is someone who is not necessarily hiding their negative emotions by putting on a brave face and cracking jokes, but instead, he is separating the good from the bad. He doesn’t mind when people see he’s having a bad day, or if people can tell he’s angry, or stressed, he won’t do much to hide it whilst the situation is still having that negative affect on him. But as soon as he gets to the party or the pub, or he’s having a laugh with a friend, he lets go of whatever is bothering him and enjoys the moment. And think it is people who generally make him happiest, like, he can find enjoyment in food and sunsets and such, but it’s interacting with people that really brightens his mood.
PREFERRED SHIPS // CHARACTER SEXUALITY // GENDER & PRONOUNS
No Preferred ships as yet. Bisexual but with a higher preference for men that he’s not quite willing to admit yet. Male, he/him.
CREATE ONE (OR MORE!) OF THE FOLLOWING FOR YOUR CHARACTER:
Gideon works in the Department of Magical Transportation. It’s not his dream job, or something he’s particularly enthused about, but it keeps him busy and it pays the rent. He got a job in a low level position a couple of years after graduating Hogwarts, thinking it would simply be a filler until he found what he was really supposed to be doing. However a summer temp job turned into 7 years of small talk, paperwork and rank climbing. The truth is he never really figured out what he wanted to do, apart from boyhood dreams of being a quidditch player, he never found a career that grabbed his entire attention. Now with the war, he has higher priorities than finding his true calling. It is a stable job and it gives him a good position in the Ministry, which is helpful for Order work. Despite what all this may point too, Gideon is a very intelligent individual, perhaps not academically outstanding, but his brain is always ticking along, even when it is being numbed by repetitive form filling and box ticking.
Gideon is very interested in the arts. He always liked music, but after graduating from Hogwarts and moving to London he fell in love with muggle artist like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. It started with him curiously walking into a muggle record shop and buying a few singles, now he is hooked on Ginsberg’s poetry, and Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography. Particularly Mapplethorpe. Gid really likes that they don’t move, like a one way mirror, he can take as much as he likes from the photo but it doesn’t take anything back, it almost feels like a secret, and being a twin, he doesn’t get too many of those. A couple of years back he picked up a guitar, and now he can play a few chords or pick a few tunes. He also likes to scribble down ideas whenever he gets a chance, half finished lines of poetry or prose litter his apartment collecting coffee stains and dust.. Sometimes he thinks maybe he was meant to be an artist, but he brushes those thoughts quickly away.
Gideon isn’t great at relationships anymore. A couple of years ago he had a fling with a guy at the ministry called Anthony. Gid fell head over heals, he felt it was a lot more than a fling, but Anthony insisted that it was just a bit of fun. He didn’t allow Gid to tell anyone, explaining that his family wouldn’t be very understanding if they found out, and at first he was fine with that. At first everything was spectacular. But eventually Gid ended up giving a lot more into the relationship than he was getting back. Gid was essentially at his boyfriend’s beck and call, but if Gid ever had a bad day, Anthony always had some excuse for why he couldn’t come over. It went as far as Gid being guilt tripped into missing the birth of one of his nephews because his boyfriend had a cold and needed looking after. Anthony often asked to borrow money from Gideon and although Gideon barely had anything to give, he would give it freely, to the point where the boyfriend spent money Gid needed for food on a new pair of shoes. Anthony would near constantly flirt with people infront of Gid, but if Gid so much as looked at someone else the wrong way, Anthony would fly into a jealous rage. In short Gid was miserable, but he was living in those moment of blissful hope where Anthony would make him feel like the only person in the entire world who was worth a damn. Unfortunately, those moment became few and far between. Eventually someone (probably Fabian, let’s be honest) got worried about how far Gid had declined from his old chipper self, and intervened. Gid had to break up with Anthony, and after a tumultuous on again off again period Gid finally broke ties completely. On the outside it appeared like Gid soon bounced back to his old self, but underneath he still carries the scars of the relationship. He finds it hard to commit, or trust people’s affection, the insecurity that probably lead to the relationship getting so out of hand in the first place, even more pronounced now. He never thought he would be sucked into abuse like that, always the first to speak up about other people’s injustices, but he quickly found out it was much different when he was submerged in the situation himself.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
♔ If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it? Feel free to name it: Right, I was thinking about this the other day, and I think it would be really very useful to have a spell that let me see round corners. Because, the other day, I was in the arse end of London, at a pub, a muggle pub I should add, those places are crazy! But anyway, I needed the toilet quite badly, I stumbled in, there are just two stalls, neither of them have door so I storm into one, and there’s two people furious shagging on the loo, now, if I’d been able to see round that corner, I would have made a strategic retreat before getting anyway close to that cubicle. Although, I suppose, being in muggle London, I couldn’t have used magic anyway. And really, if I hadn’t been so drunk I might have taken the loud moaning and groaning as a cue too. But, you get my point! It would be a handy thing to have up your sleeve!
♔ You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one other character and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you’d want with you: Fabian, of course, in this purely hypothetical situation that we have never done before because it is completely FORBIDDEN and not allowed at all. But I’d probably bring a packet of smokes, maybe something a little stronger, Fabian could bring a wireless because I’m cheating and assuming he’s getting one item too. Then we could find a nice little clearing somewhere and relax far away from the troubles of the world, closer to the very real troubles of getting speared by an angry centaur. Again, like I said, a purely hypothetical situation.
♔ What kinds of decisions are the most difficult for you to make? It takes me forever to decide what to eat at restaurants, everything sounds so good, the whole place smells amazing, the guy across from me has something on his plate that looks delicious, but it’s all so expensive! Maybe I’ll just have a salad. Oh no, but you’re ordering a steak and my mouth will water the whole meal, Screw it! Bring out three pheasants, oysters and a bucket of champagne!
♔ What is one thing you would never want said about you? That I don’t care about something I definitely do care about. I don’t care if someone says I don’t care enough about signing Stacy’s leaving card, because honestly I spoke to Stacy once and I really don’t care about signing her leaving card. But if someone dared say I didn’t care about my family, they were have a hex coming their way. I know sometimes I can come off a little nonchalant because I like to have a good time, but that does not mean I don’t care. I care way too much for it to be discarded by an offhand comment from someone who has no idea what they’re talking about.
WRITING SAMPLE
It was the hottest day of the year so far. Gid could feel the sweat making his shirt stick to his back, his school tie and cloak had long since abandoned. Nearly everybody was down by the lake. Couples were sitting on the grass enjoying the last light of the sun giving their significant other’s acne clad faces a golden glow. Groups of friends pretended to do their homework whilst exchanging the latest gossip and daring each other to throw things at the squid. And then there was Gideon and Fabian. They stood apart from the rest, purveying over the scene in front of them. Gideon was relatively satisfied by the turnout, of course, the poor fools didn’t yet realise they had turned out for anything.
“You definitely set the timer up right?” Gideon asked Fab as they waited.
“Yes, definitely. Any second now.”
“Really? Because that’s what you said last time. Remember how disappointing that was. Just a good job we didn’t advertise this time.” Gideon smiled despite himself and Fabian gave an amused huff.
“Any second n-”
Fabian was cut off by the abrupt explosion from across the lake. Reds and greens and purples burst into the twilight sky. Flowers and streamers of light illuminating the faces of the Hogwarts populations as they looked on in avid fascination. Gideon very nearly fist bumped the air. The fireworks were an incredible success. People were gasping and laughing and screaming.
People were screaming.
Gideon came too. He was on his knees, sweat slick hair stuck to his face and his head hung uselessly on his chest. His hand clenched around his wand feebly at first, then stronger. People were screaming. They were running. They were terrified. Someone booted his leg as they ran past and stumbled over his inanimate body. He barely felt it.
His eyes were open, but he couldn’t see anything. Just dust, the thickest cloud of dust, he couldn’t even make out the ground in front of him. He struggled to remember where he was.
He had lit a fuse. He had been told to light a fuse. He had thought it would be a good idea. He had thought it would make a difference. Now people were screaming. There was a baby crying somewhere. The dust and chaos cleared fractionally and Gideon could make out the wreckage of the blast.
What had he done? He tried to get to his feet, but his legs wouldn’t work. He dragged himself over to a wall, he couldn’t breath. Every time he drew in a breath, he sucked in the dust and began to cough. He would die here. He couldn’t breath. He had killed people here. Innocent people. The baby had stopped crying. He had to get out.

The line drawn in the sand
On The Line I was once asked by someone who was engaged in online debate with me regarding the merits of certain positions relating to the idea of rights and equality for LGBT people where I draw the line in terms of rights to be granted. As is my personal custom, rather than simply dismiss the question for the attempt at derailing that it was, I determined to answer it, as it was something I had been considering for several years. This represents the point at where I draw them. I derived these from the U.S. Bill of Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and various international Human Rights documents, with the clarifying impact of the Yogyakarta principles. The purpose here is to allow for people to gain an understanding of where I stand in terms of rights, which ultimately impact the decisions and efforts I engage in and write about. There are additional aspects to this overall outlook, this “line in the sand” that I draw for “how far I will go”. The other aspects will eventually make an appearance, but will deal with things like the structure of government and related elements. I do not believe that utopia is possible, or even desirable. I tend to favor government involvement in aspects of business, capitalism with boundaries, fiscal conservatism, local rule over federal, and I oppose the imposition of international government on other nations without consent of the governed. All of that, and, underneath it all, I am generally opposed to the idea of nationalism, in favor of a very different kind of structure. So introduced, I present The Line: The Civil Liberties of Citizens Noting that the nature of the State is a country of freedoms and liberties, and that it seeks to reaffirm the dignity and worth of human person, and the equal rights of all those people therein, 1. The Agent of the People 1.1. It is likely going to take me a while to finalize the 10th set of Rights that mark the line I draw here, as I still have research to do in this area. Of particular concern here is the availability of resources, especially water and energy, in a nation that tends to not entirely be aware of the impact of its consumption of the natural resources we have is having on our current and future lives.
