I used to assume engineers would have all the latest gadgets and up-to-date technology, and that my engineering grandad was just an outlier for choosing the least practical, more expensive solutions instead of just updating his methods.
And now I'm an engineer and just spent £16 on an external DVD/CD player for my laptop, I'm beginning to think there may be a theme.

I'm imagining a fundraising brainstorming session post Reunion/Big Talks Completed/Etc Dramatic Things
Whole crew, assembled on the deck, where Stede admits yeah so the whole money always on tap bc I'm rich thing? No longer a thing. We do actually have to Do Pirate Stuff for money now
Cut to Buttons talking cryptically abt how he knows of a list of Secret Pirate Tasks that will really earn good money-
Lucius interrupts to note that he's ninety percent sure Buttons just means dick pics (aka below the waist sketches of various poses and things that Lucius makes, has each person autograph, then sells for ridiculous amounts at random ports. Everyone absolutely makes up fake names for their signature on these, and that's half the fun tbh)
Which no one is against, but Lucius' wrist will need rest now and again what with all the dicks and other body parts (and the sketching of them) so there's got to be something else to do in addition to that
That's where I can't decide if they just go hog wild trying and even succeeding in raiding every ship they run across, setting up some sort of additional gigs (Roach offers baked goods but only if everyone takes shifts helping bake bc he should not have to do all that work alone and he's right and he should say it, Wee John suggests setting up a booth wherever they stop to offer sewing/darning/etc fabric repairs, Fang mentions Ye Olde Hot Topics are always hiring so if they stay near a safeish port for a week or two they could make some extra that way, Black Pete could absolutely make bank whittling things like I myself would be in line for something from him, etc)
or
or
some combination of all the above which gives the delightful moments of
'oh god our ship is being raided by these two terrors and their crew and wait. Wait. The guy holding a cleaver to my neck rn definitely sold me an amazing layer cake two ports back; hey, before u kill me can I pay to have one sent to my family with a note that I'm dead? Yeah? Okay, cool, someone get a pen or just write this in my blood on the deck i guess-'
And Roach would agree to it. Lucius would take down the address and write up the receipt (and the oh god im so sorry im dying at sea and leaving my family alone note to go with the cake) and they'd all be dividing up loot at the end as well as logging random sales made during the raid aksjdjfngg
And somehow they're still barely breaking even and if it weren't for Ed's previously earned funds (he starts sneaking personal financial tips into his pillow talk with Stede each night, and at first Stede hates it but then he's Pavlov'd into getting hard whenever Ed discusses budgeting, and that does make such conversation much more enjoyable for him at least)
like. they wouldn't be wholly Fucked, but it would be a much more nervous situation and everyone is just boggled that Stede doesn't seem to Get that.
But he's eager for all the side gig ideas at least, and even helps (aka he does his best, he's trying to learn how to do the work available to them, even if it isn't always the most amazing result aksndjf)
I like to think he'd eventually realise he has stuff he can offer too, like, maybe he's got a decent hand for fixing the binding of books (bc he's never trusted anyone other than himself, Ed, and the crew with his books tbh, and that v much includes repairs to them.)
Just. Lil guy, sitting by Wee John who's got a sewing project in hand that'll be picked up by end of day, and the same customer left one old much loved book with Stede to be fixed and it's his first customer and he Will Not Fuck This Up
and Frenchie and John are desperate not to giggle (with love) over how nervous he is as they chill beside him and sew away bc like
he's actively sweating with worry but his hands are moving and fixing and reglueing and whatnot with him barely even having to think abt it bc he's so used to doing this particular thing
He doesn't need to worry so much abt this particular thing! Their entire financial situation, yes, but this particular task he actually has some mastery over and everyone wants to see him acknowledge it!!! Not just for his self esteem but bc then he'll promo himself more and hopefully make more fucking money aksndkfng

Ambulances No Longer in Service? Earn Cash Instead!
Tumblr media
If you own an old ambulance that's no longer in service, you may be wondering what to do with it.
Fortunately, there's a solution that not only gets rid of the vehicle but also puts some extra cash in your pocket.
Cash for cars companies will purchase your old ambulance, no matter the condition, and give you cash on the spot.
In this article, we'll explore the benefits of selling your old ambulance, the process of doing so, and what happens to the vehicle after it's sold.
The Benefits of Selling Your Old Ambulance
There are several benefits to selling your old ambulance to a cash for cars Sydney company.
First, the process is quick and easy.
You can get a quote and schedule a pickup within a matter of days, and the entire process usually takes less than an hour.
Second, you'll get cash in hand, which can be used for anything you like.
And third, selling your old ambulance is environmentally friendly.
By recycling the vehicle, you're keeping hazardous materials out of landfills and reducing the need for new manufacturing.
The Process of Selling Your Old Ambulance
To sell your old ambulance, simply contact a cash for cars company.
They will ask you a few questions about the vehicle, such as its make, model, year, and condition.
Based on this information, they'll give you a quote for how much they're willing to pay for the ambulance.
If you accept the quote, they'll schedule a pickup time that works for you.
On the day of pickup, the driver will give you the agreed-upon amount of cash, and you'll sign over the title and any other necessary paperwork.
What Happens to Your Old Ambulance?
Once your old ambulance is sold, the cash for cars company will salvage any usable parts, such as the engine, transmission, and wheels.
These parts will be resold or used to repair other vehicles.
Non-usable parts, such as the body and frame, will be recycled.
This involves shredding the metal and other materials and using them to create new products.
Any hazardous materials, such as batteries, will be disposed of safely and in compliance with environmental regulations.
How to Prepare Your Ambulance for Sale
Before selling your old ambulance, there are a few steps you should take to prepare it.
First, gather all important documents, such as the title, registration, and maintenance records.
This will make the process smoother and faster.
Next, remove any personal items from the vehicle, including medical equipment, clothing, and paperwork.
Finally, give your ambulance a thorough cleaning, both inside and out.
This will help present it in the best possible light and may even increase its value.
Factors That Affect the Value of Your Old Ambulance
The value of your old ambulance is influenced by several factors.
The first is its age and mileage.
Generally, newer ambulances with lower mileage will fetch a higher price.
The second factor is the condition of the vehicle. If it's in good working order, both mechanically and aesthetically, it will be more valuable.
Finally, market demand for parts can also affect the value. If there's a high demand for ambulance parts, you may get a higher price for your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions about Cash for Ambulances
What if my ambulance doesn't run?
Cash for cars companies will still purchase your ambulance, even if it doesn't run. They specialize in buying vehicles in any condition.

Tumblr media
See? This is the why antis will never understand.
They run like kids throwing a tantrum while covering their ears and singing out loud their favorite song.
This confession blog it's SUPER antirecast, and ain't afraid to show it, giving rush up priority for everything against recasts (or artist they dislike, partial my as*!).
No matter if we've covered every reason why a person would prefer a recast, and why this wouldn't affect the artist, they just keep covering their ears and screaming outloud.
I'll list it once more, with felling:
1) it's true. If a person isn't going to buy (never-ever, for whatever reason you choose, there's a lot of them, I'll list them bellow) the original from the artist, it means, even if this person buys a recast of the same doll, the artist isn't loosing money or sales.
I don't see where on that statement there's a confusing part for antis, but, oh well. But the fact that the OP "doesn't care" how we think it works because we should all accept what some say and "never think or question things by ourselves", just making antirecast (or so called "proartist") arguments a hell of a lot more fishy.
2) sorry, but if a person want to buy a minifee chloe, but then chose to buy a SOOM minigem? pretty sure that's the definition of "Fairyland just lost a sale" regardless of if it's an original or not 😑, since if the person has the money and means to buy a legit (and I'm talking about purchasing straight from the company, secondhand MP isn't even included on this example, as much as you want me to, because you want to sell a ten year old doll all banged up for twice what you paid to the original company brand new and complete), choosing another company that's legit would mean FL lost a sale. Simple logic here.
Only case for FL not to loose such sale it's if (for example) a person it's going to buy a MNF chloe, but then changes it's mind about the MNF model and purchase another MNF, like a mika.
3) Again, if a person goes to buy a recast MNF chloe, FL didn't lost a sale. Here's why, people who will not buy a legit:
- people who can't afford the original. And yes, some people it's not rich, or struggle with a financial situation (ALL their lives! who would have guessed that some people are just born on a working home and die the same way?!).
And, (because I know you're going to bring it up), YES, poor people deserve "nice things too", even more than wealthy people, because they actually appreciate saving every penny until they can snuggle "a cheap recast" for themselves to help them cope with a life you snobby antis might never understand (unless you're one of the brainwashed newest generations that just wanted to "fit in" somewhere and now think "this is your war" while actually making the rich people dirty work for free).
- people who can't save for 5 years (like you say you did so "everyone can") to ""support the artist"" because they don't have an extra to "save", they just cash in and pay medical bills, rent, food, ... and they're back to square one with no capacity to save a single penny.
- people who want a discontinued doll (or part) no longer sold and oftenly not even sold in any MP secondhand either ("splits" were a snob orders a full set just to get the items they want and sell spare stuff to the meaningless crowd aren't new).
- people who want to be able to actually play with their dolls and not being afraid of touching something that worth more than several internal organs.
- people who want a resin skin color not offered by the company and don't have the guts and cash to go around painting or blushing expensive dolls that WILL have chips of paint constantly falling off, OR, uneven dye on each part of the body (process that, by the way, fades away with time).
- people who just don't want ANY doll, but a SPECIFIC one, and for any previously listed reason, can't get the original. Because, let's face it, in any other context it'll be hilarious if you go buy chocolate chip cookies and another costumer at the store force you to take cinnamon cookies that you don't like just because "you shouldn't buy generic brand cookies, it's taking money out the original manufacturer! YOU MONSTER!" (🤣).
(and I could go on all day long, like artist who don't ship to the place you're from, small waiting lists that you never can get into for years, horrible quality issues with legit original dolls that the seller doesn't want to fix, or will only fix if you cover shipping back and forth, irrational waiting periods of time from 3 to over 8 months to sometimes a year+, and more)
So yeah, plenty of reasons to buy recast.
Tumblr media
4) "the main issue with people buying recast" it's not about companies or artist, it's about old fandom crew brainwashing new members into their benefit.
Ya no gonna lie t me yo!
Tumblr media
I was there when you, hating elitists snobs pro artist sc*ms , told people who didn't got a Volks that "it wasn't a real BJD", I was there when you called "Dorito fingers" to people just because you mean to be evil at them, or "cheap bastards" to the ones who couldn't buy imported clothes from japan, I was there as you called "hobo doll" to a resinsoul doll because the owner only got her a ""sock dress"" and ""the fussy cheap fur wig"", I was there when it was NEARLY ILLEGAL according to "the doll police" to make a legit hybrid with one head from a company and a body from another (and this was a perfect solution for people who couldn't pay the full doll, so they got the legit head of their grail and a cheaper legit body, but for the ""now called pro artist"" this was TRAVESTY!), I was there when CustomHouse and BrownieFelix, original companies with ""loving artists"" took money in advance and banished never delivering a thing, I was there when the now "conveniently banished" topic on DeanOfAngels was how the owner of legit BrownieFelix Doll declared bankruptcy after two years of taking order and not shipping a thing for then to sell the company TO HIS EX WIFE who legally didn't had to own any of the mess!, I was there when DeanOfAngels decided it was OK to exclude 5stardoll "aiden" because "it didn't had a defined nose bridge" according to snob admins (or other dolls, for reasons like "the high heels part doesn't have a joint in the ankle"), but DolfieDream wasn't even made of resin and still wasn't banned as "off topic" just because it was Volks.
I was there for ALL your sh$#@&$* and you, you guys, where blaming people who got a doll from a legit original artist or company long before recast were a thing. So own your actions, all of it, not just "the convenient part".
You push people around for a decade at least, telling that big obitsus aren't real BJDs because they're made of vinyl and "not resin", but Volks DolfieDream was fine "because VOLKS". You trashed (constantly for years) people who couldn't get an expensive brand name, marking them as "inferior", excluding them from your meetups and reunions, insulting them even if they owned legit, or ignoring them if they just didn't got the doll yet and were still saving for it, just because they had a resinsoul, a lostangel (now it's mirodoll), or a bobobie, you, YOU, told people in front of me that they would NEVER be ""part of the hobby"" because it was a hobby ONLY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO COULD AFFORD IT (rich people like you consider yourself), ...and then you give me a lecture on moral because karma hit your back door and EVERYONE can have the doll they want?!
Laughable.
Tumblr media
And you know the funniest thing?
Recast weren't even made or sold back then, and you were still trying to put a "I'm better than you" difference between people who could pay $1500 upfront and people who could only pay $300 tops. FROM LEGIT ORIGINAL COMPANIES.

Faded Away
Angel on Fire Chapter 1
John Shelby x reader
Word count: 2.3k
Warnings: They're criminals guys, they do bad things.
Tumblr media
(gif by @bonniebirddoesgifs)
You giggled as your best friend swung you around on the empty street. Isaiah, Finn and Michael walked behind you both and laughed in various degrees at your foolishness.
"The girls are already mad," Isaiah said as he stepped forward and took your hand. He pulled you close before twirling you away from him. "We're in for a night, lads."
You laughed and spun with your hands outstretched as he did the same to your friend.
"They're always mad," Michael scoffed as he rolled his eyes. "They're fuckin' winding up for the snow."
You stopped spinning and raced toward Finn, a mischievous grin on your face as you crashed into his arms.
"There's no way you're a Shelby, Michael," you laughed as you pressed yourself into Finn. "You're far too dusty. You're a wet blanket."
Finn barked a laugh as he took your wrist and spun you back toward Isaiah.
"You make no sense, (Y/N)," Michael scowled as he lit a cigarette. "Am I dry or am I wet? You can't make up your mind."
Your friend trilled a laugh. You rolled your eyes as she left Isaiah's grasp to cling to Michael.
"You know our girl," she joked as her hand found his chest. "Always too busy with her own thoughts to make much sense. I don't think you're dry at all, Michael."
"That's because you'll wet him right up, won't you?" You said exasperated.
Finn and Isaiah laughed as Michael coughed on his cigarette. Isaiah winked at you and lifted his arm. You ran into his side to claim his warmth as he pulled you close.
"Be nice to little boss," he chastised before his tone lowered as if to tell you a scary story. "Too much longer and he'll be just like Tommy, and you wouldn't dare say such a thing to him."
The night was like most nights. You and your friend went with the Peaky boys to the Garrison under the promise of drinks and snow. You'd been doing it for years, long before Michael joined the little crew, and it was old hat by now. The boys liked the entertainment and needed you to parade their product and make a scene to attract customers. You got your drinks and snow free as long as you attracted attention. Sometimes Isaiah or Finn would give you a cut of their cash on an especially good night. There were worse things to do to get extra coin.
"I don't take anything the bait says to heart," Michael said. "They're not much more than pretty wrapping to attract the men and put the girls at ease."
"But we are pretty," you pouted mockingly as you cocked your head back to see Michael. "You might not have a use for smart girls, but you have use for pretty."
Michael inhaled his cigarette, taking his time, making you wait for his response. Hang on it. He loved to make everyone wait on him like it was a sign that he was in charge of things. If everyone hung on his word, you'd all forget to breathe until he did. He'd become in charge of everything, including the air in your lungs.
The smoke lifted from his mouth and into his nostrils before he exhaled it all away.
"And your mouth is good reason to find better bait," Michael said evenly. His eyes were always so cold. You shuddered involuntarily as you lost eye contact with him and turned back around.
"Oh now, little boss," Isaiah pish-poshed. "You know (Y/N), she means no harm. Besides, these two fillies are the bread and butter of our nights."
Isaiah tucked you into his side with a squeeze, smiling down at you. You wrapped an arm around him inside his coat and squeezed back.
"You watch your hands, now," he joked. "I'm a respectable young man."
You threw your head back against his arm with a loud laugh and met his gaze nose to nose.
"Isaiah Jesus, your name might be holy but you are sinful as they come," you taunted, ghosting your lips across his.
Isaiah mocked shock, good mouth agape as he shot a look to Finn who had sped up to walk beside you two.
"Finn, did you hear what she said?" Isaiah said as his free hand clutched his heart. "She called me sinful. She's yours now, mate. My heart's done broke for the night."
He dropped his arm from your shoulder and playfully pushed you into Finn who caught your arm as you stumbled his way.
"Striking out with everyone already, are ye?" Finn chuckled. "Not a good omen for the night."
"You know why Isaiah calls him 'little boss,' right?" You taunted, loudly whispering so everyone could hear.
"Yeah, why's that, then?" Michael said, mouth tight as your friend hung on him.
"Shhhh," your scowled at him before turning your full attention to Finn. "I'm talking to a real Shelby."
Michael scoffed behind you.
"Yeah, Finn's a real asset to the company," Michael deadpanned.
Finn's face grew tight. You quickly grabbed his chin and made him look at you.
"Hey now, boss," you said lightly. "You pay no attention to Mr. Fancypants over there. You're more man than he'll ever be. He's just acting tough to make up for all those years in his perfect little village."
Finn's lip twitched and his face relaxed into a small smile. You playfully knuckled his chin and kissed his cheek.
"Enough now," Isaiah called as he took the lead of the group. "We're almost to the pub, just stop bickering and have a good time, yeah?"
You all toned in agreement.
You felt a weight in your stomach as you reached the Garrison and saw the people pushing to fit in the pub. You had been going most nights every week for ages, on top of your day job at a desk, and honestly the booze and the drugs had started to lose its appeal.
"Come on," your friend squealed as she dragged you through the doors.
The pub was packed, but the sight of the boys behind you cleared a path to a table. It's occupants stared at your group wide eyed before quickly tipping their hats and leaving their seats. Finn pulled a chair back for you and you playfully patted his cheek as you sat, your friend sitting across the table next to Michael. Finn and Isaiah sat with you in the middle, your back to the busiest part of the pub. The seat made you uneasy, vulnerable.
You jumped as you felt a hand brush your shoulder.
"Here ya'ar," Harry said briskly as he sat whiskey down for everyone and gave the boys beers as well.
The table mumbled their thanks and the boys started a conversation you quickly tuned out. You looked around you to the other patrons, scoping out who could be reeled in for snow or smoke or even the bit of opium in Isaiah's pocket.
Most were men tired from the long day of work, but there were pockets of young people with girls your own age that were out for a raucous night. You always focused on them. They usually had the money and the nights to lose. Asking the working men always felt like taking food out of their family's mouths, and the extra layer of scum from the thought sickened you.
"You don't have to go to scoping right away," Finn yelled down your ear to overcome the boon of voices surrounding you. "Relax. Have your drink. We're all friends here, are we not? No need to rush off right away."
You smiled thinly and nodded, looking back to the table. Michael had his arm swung around your friend's shoulders and she had taken his cigarette to smoke while he continued on some sort about the office. You only heard every other word from the roar of the pub, but he leaned forward to slap the table and the boys erupted with laughter, so you chuckled weakly along.
Isaiah wrapped an arm around you absentmindedly as he went on with his story and you ran your middle finger around the rim of your whiskey glass.
"So Arthur sent me to collect from…"
You toned him out, thoughts swirling your head as you circled your glass. Did you want to drink? Should you? It would surely help with your nerves from the noise. But oh, being drunk had become so dull.
"... And I said 'well we either take your eyes out your coin, you choose!'" Isaiah said as he rocked back in his chair and put his hands behind his head, his smile smug.
"Give 'em protection and they don't even wanna pay for it," Finn scoffed. "Bloody ungrateful."
You gritted your teeth together before you gripped your glass and drank it down in one go. The whiskey coated your throat and burned down your throat to the brick in your stomach. It eased your muscles as you rolled your tongue against your teeth. I guess we're doing this again.
It might have eased your body, but the crowd felt louder, more invasive. Having your back to the door felt like wearing a target. You itched to move. You looked around the pub again, your hand idly on your glass as you skimmed the crowd. A set of eyes locked with yours.
You smiled slowly, raising a brow in challenge. The young man smiled back. He wasn't ugly, nor was he entirely attractive. Just a random face in the pub to pull to the table to sell some tokyo. A little flirting might get you a drink from the deal. You tilted your head slightly, looking over to the bar and back to the man before you twisted back around to the table. You stood up with your glass, bent slightly to Isaiah's ear.
"Got a bite," you said. "I'll be at the bar."
Isaiah nodded.
"Feel him out and bring him 'round then, yeah?"
You stood up and made your way for two seats near the end of the bar, near the private Shelby room. You sat down on the one farther in, giving the man a clean exit if he was uninterested in what you were willing to offer.
You held your breath until you felt someone stand beside you.
"(Y/N)," He nodded as he pulled out the chair and sat.
"John," you replied, mimicking his tone but you couldn't help but lift a brow in surprise of the older Shelby boy joining you at the bar top.
You both were around each other enough to know of each other, but you rarely spoke. You stayed around the younger group and away from Tommy and Arthur. The oldest two were nice enough, but you knew their business and had seen when they decided not to be nice. Better to keep your head down and stick to the younger men who were still enamored with snow and tits.
John lit a cigarette and watched as you ran a finger around the rim of your empty glass, not daring to turn to look him in the eye.
"You're not yourself lately," he said with an easy smile before he inhaled his cigarette.
He pulled it from his lips and let out an exhale as he nudged you with his shoulder and offered it to you.
"How do you know what I'm like?" Your finger froze on the glass before your hand fell to the side.
You picked up your glass to drink, but at it down as you realized it was still empty. You slowly turned your head to look back at him.
"You're grinning gunpowder most nights, ready to blow at a moment's notice," John chuckled as his eyes roamed your face and down your body. "Lately you've been different. Not all checked in."
"That so?" You smirked as you took his cigarette from his hand and took a puff. You sized him up as your hand rested the cigarette on the counter. "Do you usually watch your little brother's pals this closely?"
John gave a short laugh.
"You should see Tommy," he said. "He knows every dirty secret of anyone who so much as spends a night around a Blinder."
"Smokes and mirrors," you said before you brought the cigarette back to your lips and inhaled. "You didn't answer my question."
"No."
"So why'd you sit by me, then?" You exhaled with a curl of smoke. "Tommy making sure one of his brother's bait girls isn't stepping out of line?"
"Is that it?" John said as he took his cigarette back. "You like a boy that's not a Blinder and rather be with him most nights?"
You snorted.
"There's no boy," you said incredulously. "Think me that foolish? Or that shallow?"
"Well if it's not a boy you aren't knocked up," John said as he smoked.
"Not everything is sex and drugs, Shelby," you scoffed. "I know none of you believe that, but it's true."
"Who says we don't believe in more than that?" John said. "Sometimes we believe in guns."
You rolled your eyes but couldn't help but crack a smile.
"Ehhh, see?" John said as he nudged your shoulder. "There's still a bit of the old girl in there."
"The old girl is just getting sick of the same old thing," you mumbled.
"What's that?" John frowned.
Harry appeared, hastily wiping the bar as he set out a glass for John and refilled yours.
"Sorry, sir," Harry rasped. "Night's a bit crazy. Makes me think we should hire another as help."
"It'sfine," John nodded at Harry as he wrapped his hand around his drink and turned toward you. "Now what're you on about?"
"I asked what you were after," you said louder. "You older ones don't bless us with your presence much."
"Not that much older," John grinned. "You're Isaiah's age, right? Six year age gap is nothin'."
"You know I'm not myself and my age," you said amused as you squeezed your glass, "but you won't tell me what you're after. Mr. Shelby, are you chasing after bait?"
John smiled, a mischievous glint in his eye.
"Love," he said as smoke poured through his teeth. "I don't chase no one."

These pretty Italian villages in Calabria want to pay you $33,000 to move in
(CNN) — Ever dreamed of opening an artisan boutique and settling down for good in an idyllic village in Italy's deep south where it's warm almost all year-round -- and get paid to do it?
For those willing to take the plunge, it could soon no longer be just a dream.
The region of Calabria plans to offer up to €28,000 ($33,000) over a maximum of three years to people willing to relocate to sleepy villages with barely 2,000 inhabitants in the hope of reversing years of population decline.
These include locations near the sea or on mountainsides -- or both.
Tumblr media
This isn't money for nothing, however. To get the funds, new residents must also commit to kickstarting a small business, either from scratch or by taking up preexisting offers of specific professionals wanted by the towns.
There are a few other catches, too.
Applicants must take up residency and -- sorry boomers -- be a maximum of 40 years old. They must be ready to relocate to Calabria within 90 days from their successful application.
It's hoped the offer will attract pro-active young people and millennials eager to work.
Gianluca Gallo, a regional councilor, tells CNN the monthly income could be in the range of €1,000-€800 for two to three years. Alternatively, there could be one off funding to support the launch of a new commercial activity -- be it a B&B, restaurant, bar, rural farm, or store.
"We're honing the technical details, the exact monthly amount and duration of the funds, and whether to include also slightly larger villages with up to 3,000 residents," he tells CNN. "We've had so far a huge interest from villages and hopefully, if this first scheme works, more are likely to follow in coming years."
New life
Dubbed "active residency income," the project aims to boost the appeal of Calabria as a spot for "south-work" -- the rebranded southern Italy version of remote working -- explains Gianpietro Coppola, mayor of Altomonte, who contributed to the scheme.
He says it's a more targeted approach to revitalizing small communities than the one euro house sell offs that have recently hit headlines.
"We want this to be an experiment of social inclusion. Draw people to live in the region, enjoy the settings, spruce up unused town locations such as conference halls and convents with high-speed internet. Uncertain tourism and the one euro houses are not the best ways to revamp Italy's south," says Coppola.
The "active residency income" project -- and application process -- are expected to be launched online in the next few weeks. The region has been working on it for months and has already earmarked more than €700,000 for the project.
The region of Molise and the town of Candela, in Puglia, have adopted similar schemes in past years as an alternative to selling crumbling homes for the cost of an espresso.
Over 75% of Calabria towns -- roughly 320 -- currently have fewer than 5,000 residents, leading to fears that some communities could die out completely in a few years unless regeneration occurs.
"The goal is to boost the local economy and breathe new life into small-scale communities," adds Gallo. "We want to make demand for jobs meet supply, that's why we've asked villages to tell us what type of professionals they're missing to attract specific workers."
As global travel resumes and Italy welcomes back tourists, visiting the region this summer might be a good way to get a feel of the Calabrian village life.
Santa Severina
Tumblr media
This village rises on a tuff rock cliff overlooking the Neto River. It's built in layers depending upon wealth: palazzos belonging to the richer families are at the top of the hill, the humble dwellings below, dug into the rock.
There's a Greek and Hebrew district with palm trees.
The baptistery here is the oldest Byzantine monument in Calabria, while the impressive well-kept castle features frescoed undergrounds and stables.
Santa Severina is known for its oranges. Villagers are dubbed Aranciaru, meaning "orange-eaters" in local dialect. Oranges grown here are the pride of Calabria, due to the fertile soil and exceptional nutritional qualities. They're sought after in top restaurants and fruit shows.
San Donato di Ninea
Tumblr media
Dating back to before Greek colonization, this charming village lies in the deepest area of Calabria's Pollino national park.
It's so remote and tucked away on the hills that barely anyone outside of Calabria knew it existed up until the 1970s.
The view from high up on the peaks takes in the region's two seas: the Ionian and Tyrrhenian.
This untouched and pristine location is home to many wild animals and plants and is considered one of Italy's top wilderness reserves.
Orchids grow along mountain trails unwinding to panoramic huts. It's a chestnut heaven with popular food fairs.
Civita
Tumblr media
At first even Italian speakers might feel a little lost here. Locals speak a weird-sounding slavic dialect called Arbereshe.
The community was founded in the 1400s by Albanians fleeing the Turkish empire.
Perched on a rocky cliff within the wild Pollino national park once inhabited by bandits and outlaws, this tiny hamlet of barely 1,000 people is what "authentic" Calabria is all about.
The Raganello river gorge, Italy's largest canyon, is dotted with human-shaped rocks.
Tumblr media
A serpentine path goes down to the "Devil's bridge." Old traditions, Byzantine rituals and peculiar foods live on.
Old houses are connected by circular narrow alleys dubbed "wrinkles" and have scary-looking chimneys believed to keep evil at bay.
Samo and Precacore
Tumblr media
You'll get the thrill of living in two ancient hamlets at the same time here. Samo was founded by ancient Greeks looking for shelter on the hills but not too far from the shore, turning the village into their "harbor."
Time stands still.
In the morning the smell of newly baked bread and fresh cheese wafts over the village as women leave their low-cut peasant stone houses carrying baskets of food on their heads, just like in the old days.
The best part of Samo is its sister-ghost hamlet of Precacore, rising right in front over the valley. From Samo's main piazza a little winding road departs uphill to the abandoned district.
Locals fled following a series of quakes but today Precacore has been brought back from the grave and comes to life during summer.
Hikers, tourists and descendants of former families flock here to admire the Greek-Byzantine ruins.
Aieta
Tumblr media
Founded on the ashes of a Greek settlement, the village lies close to the cozy beaches of Maratea and Praia a Mare.
It's tiny but elegant. Dwellings with red tiled roofs are clustered at the feet of a majestic fortress with panoramic loggia.
Renaissance palazzos and lavish stone portals offer a glimpse of Tuscany in Calabria.
Eagles and wolves inhabit the woods. Trekking routes lead to the nearby villages of Papasidero, Laino Borgo and Laino castello.
Bova
Tumblr media
Legends says an Armenian queen built this village on a hill where cows grazed -- hence the name which nods to the term "cattle" in Italian (bue).
Known as the region's "natural balcony" for the mesmerizing coastline scenery, it's located right on the tip of Italy's boot close to Sicily, in the heart of "Greek Calabria" which flourished with settlers from ancient Greece.
Noble stone mansions with elaborate portals are situated below the cliffhanging ruins of a Norman castle.
Strolling through the narrow alleys you can still hear the clacking of old looms. Weaving tradition dates back millennia, and the unique fibre broom plant is still picked on the peaks of the nearby Aspromonte mountains.
Fresh goat milk is on sale each day. Ethnic music festivals, a Byzantine Easter party with fruit decorations and a picturesque carnival are top events.
Caccuri
Tumblr media
This spectacular hilltop castle, built as a lookout post against pirate raids, overlooks a maze of alleys, stone homes and tiny piazzas with private entrances.
Across centuries powerful feudal families ruled over the village, killing and poisoning each other.
Olive groves dot the hills and produce a premium extra virgin olive oil. Part of the fortress, featuring high walls and a loggia tower hiding inside a cistern, has been turned into an elegant designer resort.
Albidona
Set at an altitude of 850 meters but with territory stretching all the way to the sea, this community enjoys an enclosed pinewood and a cozy beach featuring a Saracen tower.
It's close to the border with Basilicata and Puglia, making it an ideal spot for touring all three regions and getting the most from the Pollino national park and the warm sunny coast.
With a 10-minute car ride locals can hop downhill for a swim or uphill for a refreshing yoga or trekking session.
Legend says it was founded by a blind seer fleeing from burning Troy. Ruins of a crumbling castle overlook cherry, almonds, and wild apple orchards. The terrain is made of the same stuff as that of the Ionian Sea in Greece.
Sant'Agata del Bianco
A rural vibe survives in this collection of humble peasant dwellings where thick yellowish stone walls and painted green doors whisk tourists back into the past.
The entire village and its rough cobble alleys have been neatly restyled. The local "Palmenti Route" trail takes in a network of old wells cut into the rocky ground and once used to make wine.
Keep an eye on the region's website for news of the project.

Do I have to tax a car if it is insured? I know that you HAVE to insure a car if it is taxed.....?
What I know. You have to tax your car unless you do a SORN. If you have done a SORN you don't have to pay car tax or even insure your car if you don't want to. If you don't intend to drive your car but it has car tax then your car HAS to be insured by law. But what about the other way round ...? If you have a car insured but it is in the garage and you never intend to drive it, for example it is a collectors item, do you HAVE to tax it? I can find on the net yes you have to insure your car if it is taxed but cannot find confirmation either way whether you HAVE to also have your car taxed if you never intend to drive it but you do want it insured. If someone confirms that it doesn't have to be taxed, could you provide details of where you found this information so that I can obtain a copy for my records please? Many thanks Lisa""

Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""

What's the cheapest way to commute between Liverpool and Manchester?
Hi, I'm starting a new job in Manchester next month and I'm trying to find the cheapest way to commute. I'll be travelling from Rock Ferry to Manchester Piccadilly 5 days a week and my working hours will be roughly 9am to 5pm, although some days will require an earlier start and a later finish. I've looked at a rail season ticket and was shocked to discover it would cost 3008.00 with First Trans Penine. I've also read that the train journey is horrendous. My wife and I share a car but realistically, she can't rely on me to pick her up and drop her off at work at the same time every day (she works in Liverpool) so we would potentially need another car. With that, comes the initial cost of buying the vehicle, then tax, insurance, MOT and weekly fuel, which in my mind will cost even more than the rail season ticket. Added to that is the fact that we're not particularly well off so can't afford more than a couple of thousand for a 2nd hand car. A brand new car on finance would be out of the question. So, are there any regular Liverpool to Manchester commuters out there and if so, how do you keep your costs down? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!""

What's the cheapest option for car insurance for a teen?
I just recently passed my driving test and I'm completely taken away by the prices I've saw for car insurance on my parents Astra, I'm getting prices up at 7K. I've decided to go out and buy a category 1 insurance car (or any that's a low category) so it will be cheaper to run but the only problem is, I don't have a job at the moment so only have savings. It wouldn't bother me not taking out my own policy because I understand that can be more expensive but is there an alternative for me until I get a job and earn money to get the policy so I can collect NCD's? One of my friends use to have his own policy on his family car, a big car like ours, until he had an accident and the price shot up. Now because he can't afford the monthly costs he just takes out 1 weeks insurance at a top when needed and this costs him around 40. What I don't understand though is that he's 18, the same age as me, and I thought you werent able to do short term insurance as a new driver? Although I think he somehow takes it under his parents policy? I'v no idea how this works if someone could shine a light on it? Another friend also had a Nissan Micra and was paying around 80-90 per month which I thought was very cheap (also the same age as me) for an insurance which makes me wonder if he is on his own policy? My dad will be getting insured on my own car also and be using it for work at nights. If anyone could come up with some solutions for me that would be great!! :) Thanks""
First car recommendations and insurance help?
I'm 17 and I'm about 3 or 4 months away from passing my driving test. I've been looking at cars and really like the look of a peugeot 206 or 207 or a new model renault clio. however, the insurance is at the cheapest 2,220 - that's with out any pass plus or other drivers on it. I was just wondering if there are any other cars you people would recommend for me (my budget is 1000 for a car) and any insurance tips. no-one be stupid please, I'm a good driver and yes i do need a car :-)""
What are insurance rate for a motorcycle driver?
What are insurance rate for a motorcycle driver?
Car Insurance quotes - when you get an online quote and it asks you?
how much your car is worth, do you quote the price you paid for it or its present price..? I ask because if you think about it you could have bought your car last year for 12, 000, and one year later it's worth 9,000. If you car is written off it isn't as ther inusrance company will pay out on the amount you paid for the car.. this happened to my brother and they only paid the value it was worth on the day of his crash which was considerably less....""
