“Your Majesty!” Glenn shouted as he burst into the room. At the far end of the room Crono and Lucca could see an older man in fine robes and a woman who looked just like Marle.
“Chancellor?!” Glenn asked in surprise. The older man growled and said, “What do you think you’re doing here?”
“I’m here to save the queen from you, it would seem,” Glenn replied as he stepped forward, readying his bow. “Betraying the king for the Mystics?”
“You’re one to talk of betrayal ‘Sir Glenn’,” the Chancellor laughed. “You would risk death to save her? Very well then…”
Queen Leene ran towards Glenn as the Chancellor began to morph into a massive insectoid beast with long ram-like horns. It’s beady eyes gleamed and sharp fangs filled its mouth.
“You two! Protect the Queen!” Glenn shouted as he stepped forward to fight the fiend. “I’ll take care of this fiend.”
Leene hurried over to Crono and Lucca. Lucca asked, “W-what is that thing?!”
“Yakra,” Queen Leene explained. “It’s one of Demon King Ozzie’s lesser generals… He was going to kill me and have a fiend take my place. I don’t know what he’s done with the real Chancellor…”
While Lucca had her gun aimed at the door, Crono unsheathed his katana and watched Glenn shoot several arrows at Yakra. While many found their mark, it didn’t seem to slow the fiend down as much as Glenn had hoped for. Yakra charged at Glenn who barely had time to dodge the attack. Realizing that there would be no way to keep his distance, Glenn put his bow away and unsheathed his sword.
Yakra charged at Glenn yet again. This time, Glenn dodged to the side and slashed Yakra. Crono watched the fight continue and was in awe of how skilled Glenn was. A loud bang caught his attention. He turned to see Lucca had shot a Naga that had tried to enter the room and Queen Leene was covering her ears.
There was the sound of some rather startled voices. The door swung open as a Diablo charged in. Lucca fired another bullet and struck the fiend in the shoulder. She quickly pulled the trigger again and shot it in the chest. As it fell over dead, she could see a few Gnashers and a Hench standing behind looking stunned.
“How do the humans have magic?!” hissed one of the Gnashers. The Hench turned and ran back down the hall, not keen on meeting the same fate as the Naga and Diablo. The Gnashers slithered forward and lunged at Lucca. Lucca panicked as she shot at the giant snakes, only hitting one of them. Lucca’s gun went click and she called out, “Crono, I need to reload!”
Crono quickly moved himself between Lucca and the incoming Gnashers. He swung his katana and cut one down. The second Gnasher lunged at him and he stumbled to parry its fangs. Crono managed to find his footing and stabbed the Gnasher. Seeing that the fiends were either dead or running away, Crono looked over to see Glenn being slammed against the wall when Yakra swung its horns to attack.
Glenn steadied himself and swung his blade, slashing Yakra across the face. He had heard Lucca use her weapon a few times before yelling something about reloading. His focus was on Yakra and stopping it at any cost. Realizing Yakra had him cornered, Glenn hoped that Crono and Lucca would be smart enough to take the queen and make a run for it while he kept the fiend busy.
As he braced to block another attack from Yakra, Glenn was surprised when the fiend reared back in pain and turned its attention on Crono. Yakra shot quills at Crono who managed to dodge the attack. Crono clumsily swung at the fiend who swung its horns and disarmed him.
“Damnit!” Glenn cursed to himself as he moved to rescue Crono from Yakra. He leapt and stabbed his sword into Yakra’s back. The fiend screeched in agony and thrashed around. Glenn held on and pulled out a hunting knife.
Crono managed to get away and pick up his katana as Glenn stabbed the knife into the fiend’s neck. The thrashing slowed and eventually came to an end. Glenn wordlessly pulled both blades from Yakra’s body and wiped them clean before sheathing them. Crono began to thank Glenn when the swordsman looked up with a stern expression. It reminded Crono of the rare times he’d ever seen Lucca’s dad look angry. Glenn shifted his attention to Queen Leene and bowed before her. “Your majesty, we should make haste before the Mystics regroup.”
Queen Leene nodded and followed Glenn down the hallway. Lucca and Crono exchanged glances before hurrying to follow them out. The way back out was without incident, the remaining fiends had apparently fled with the death of their leader.
As soon as they were a good distance away from the cathedral, Glenn turned to Lucca and Crono. He looked like he wanted to yell at them but he was at a loss for words. Even so, Crono could see a look of concern in the swordsman’s eyes. Queen Leene broke the silence and Glenn’s concentration.
“Glenn, I will tell my husband of how you rescued me, perhaps-“ Queen Leene began to say. Glenn held up a hand to stop her. He turned to face her and bowed.
“I apologize, Your Majesty, but I doubt the King or his Knight Captain will forgive me for my crime even if I did save your life…” Glenn said with a sigh. “I must take my leave before word reaches Sir Cyrus that I’m in the kingdom. Be safe, my Queen. I entrust your safe return to Crono and Lucca.”
He looked at Crono and Lucca and said wearily, “Please be safe and get the queen back to the castle.”
Queen Leene frowned as Glenn walked away into the forest. She looked at Crono and Lucca. “I don’t know how we can ever repay you. Tell me, why did you come to my rescue?”
“It was the right thing to do… and our friend was mistaken for you so we knew we had to find you,” Crono replied. Lucca looked towards the forest and asked, “What was Glenn talking about?”
Queen Leene turned away and began walking down the road towards the castle. She kept a brisk pace, impressive considering her elaborate dress. Crono and Lucca walked beside her and Lucca looked expecting an answer. Finally, Queen Leene spoke.
“I only know Sir Cyrus accused him of treason and desertion years ago although I’m not sure what exactly happened,” she replied. “Truth be told, today was the first time I had seen him in a decade. I’ve worried about him for ages and I’m glad he’s alive.”
Crono and Lucca exchanged looks. They wondered what Glenn had done and why he would apparently risk his life for the queen if what Queen Leene said was true. It didn’t take long for a patrol to come across them and escort them to the castle. Queen Leene explained to the soldiers that Crono and Lucca had found and rescued her, saying nothing about Glenn.
