Road Trip around Kent
Hi, I am Marie and my husband is Drew. We hope you like our blog based on our recent visit to Kent. Welcome to Jenkins Journeys, cycling, and adventuring through life.
I had received a number of recommendations to visit Kent and as I had never been before, we decided to do it as a road trip to get the most out of the visit. We decided to hire a Motor Home and was delighted to pick up a spotless 6 berth Ford Chausson MotorHome from Motor Home Hire UK. It was a comfortable and easy drive especially as this was my first time hiring a motorhome. The vehicle came with all the extra’s you need, such as electric hook up, gas cylinder and kitchenware.
Tumblr media
Day 1
We decided to head towards Epping Forest for our first night, as we are keen cyclists we thought it would be great to explore the area and find a campsite that was close to the Forest. Once in the area, we came across Debden House Campsite. It is a conference centre and had 6 large fields for the use of campers and large groups. It cost us £32 for the night which is more than what we would usually pay for a pitch, but as it was on the edge of the Forest we decided to stay for the one night. After a cozy sleep in the double bed above the driver's cabin, we set off for Whitstable, which we decided would be our next overnight stop.
Day 2
We traveled across the Dartford Crossing along to Rochester,( it is important to note that you must log on to the website and pay your crossing charge before midnight on the day you travel), this was for a quick comfort break and I am glad we did as this was our first sightseeing stop, as there was lots of history in the area and an impressive Castle sitting proudly in the centre of the town. I especially liked the wonky buildings.
Tumblr media
We arrived in Whitstable mid-afternoon and after a drive along the seafront out of town we came across Sea View Holiday Park. It has lots of static caravans, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that they had a touring site and offered pods right next to the entertainment area and washing facilities.
As we wanted to explore the immediate area we decided to stop for the next 3 nights. The touring site was literally a stone’s throw (or pebble throw) on to the pebbly beach, with a long promenade. Once we had set up the motorhome, filling up the water tank and getting our set up right we headed out on our bikes back up the prom to Whitstable. It was a fantastic ride along a wide concrete prom passing lots of beach huts and bars and restaurants. As the area is famous for its Oyster Farm it was no surprise to learn that many of the restaurants offer wonderful seafood menu’s. As it was Sunday late afternoon most of the shops on the high street were shut, but it had lots of small independent shops and had a quaint feel to it.
Tumblr media
Day 3
We were up early because we wanted to get out on our bikes and cycle along to Margate. As it turned out we traveled a lot further and made it to Ramsgate, this was partly due to the fantastic prom that made cycling along the coastline so much easier. The trail along the prom is called the Oyster trail and it leads on to the Viking trail, it is well signposted but given that your following on one path it is easy to navigate anyway.
After leaving our campsite the first area we came in to was Herne Bay, we stuck to the trail but it seemed like a beautiful area. Just after the bay, the trail heads away from the beach, however, we decided to push our bikes along the pebbly beach to do some beachcombing. Once around the Bay, we rejoined the trail and came to Reculver Castle Towers, an interesting stop for a quick refreshment break.
Tumblr media
We continued on to Margate and popped into the town for a quick look around and then continued on the trail along the way we passed some stunning coastline, namely Botany Bay, Viking Bay, and Broadstairs. Due to the time of year, there was a number of tourists but we were able to cycle along at an easy pace without having to dismount.
We reached Ramsgate and this was a pleasant surprise, it had a lovely old fashion seaside feel to the town and we visited a wonderful Fish and Chip Shop that was a well-deserved treat after the 25 plus miles ride. After sitting on the beach to enjoy our fish supper and ushering the seagulls, we took the cycle back. Lucky for us the wind was behind us and we arrived back at the campsite early evening, after a full day cycling and sightseeing.
Day 4
The next day we headed inland and took the Crab and Winkle trail on our bikes to Canterbury. The ride from our site was approx 8-9 miles along a disused railway line through gorgeous countryside and woodland. We visited Canterbury Cathedral which we believe is a must to visit when you're in town. It is steeped in history and was undergoing major renovation work, and has masses to see and learn. The town itself had lots of mini shop fronts and they also have punt trips along the Great Stour from West Gate. Here the wonky shops continued.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After speaking with a lady on the gates of the Cathedral that lives in Whitstable we decided to stop off for a seafood lunch in Whitstable, at Wheelers Restaurant. It was a quaint restaurant, with a large selection on the menu. We chose a fishcake starter and a seafood Mezze. We were instructed that the restaurant only takes cash payments and if you want a glass of wine with your meal there is an Offy across the road with a large selection of local beers and ales. So plenty to try while enjoying your meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our way back to the campsite we picked up some fresh Oysters from the Whitstable Oyster Company, we paid £10 for 6 super fresh Oysters. We took them away and had them for our evening meal. It was great to hear about the history of the Oysters in the area and it was interesting to learn that this farm has over 10 million Oysters just off the shoreline.
Day 5
After packing up and moving on, we had decided to head towards Hastings and we came across a sign for Bodiam Castle as a member of the National Trust and after seeing it in our book we decided to do a slight detour and visit the Medieval castle ruins, its a wonderful sight to see, surrounded by a motto. It is one of the most impressive picturesque castles to go and see.
Tumblr media
Due to our impromptu visit, we decided to find a campsite in the Royal Tunbridge Wells area, this was partly due to the fact that there is a number of National Trust sites to visit in the area that we wanted to visit. We had a quick google and found what we thought was a campsite called Sunninglye Farm. On arrival down a small lane, we were met by a lovely lady called Jill, she explained that they are a working farm but also have 7 stunning camping lodges or safari tents as we would call them. Although they are not set up as a campsite, she was kind enough to offer us the opportunity to park up our motorhome on their bottom sheep field close by to the communal shower block. We excepted graciously because it seemed like such a lovely location and we were not disappointed. We had two fabulous nights here and will definitely return in the future to stay in their lodges, it's a wonderful site and has lots to offer for families or groups. On this afternoon we cycled just a few miles into Royal Tunbridge Wells, the town had a number of architecturally interesting buildings but you could also see that the town is having a huge amount of upgrading and investment.
We had the privilege of cooking some of Jill’s home-reared pork in their pizza oven and it was great to make new friends of the farm animals. The chickens are free-range and would often wander around by where you sit. Take a look at their fantastic lodges. I particularly liked that the lighting was by gas lamps and you use a log burner as a stove. They had 3 bedrooms, 2 double and one was bunk beds. I think 2 of the lodges had ensuite showers but all lodges had their own toilet. Each lodge had stunning views of the countryside.
Tumblr media
Day 6
This was a final day so we headed out on our bikes to visit Scotney Castle which was approx 8 miles from our site, this stretch was a little hilly for novice cyclists but the effort is well worth it when you reach this National Trust site with a detour to the small village of Lamberhurst. This is by far my favorite NT site, there is so much to see here. The house which was lived in by Betty Hussey, right up to recent times 2006. Its a beautiful time capsule of how she used to live, but then you have the stunning old castle and folly which you can view from the library window and explore. It’s important to add that the cafe and walled garden are worth a visit too. We did want to visit Chatwell House the home of Winston Churchill while we were in the area but we just ran out of time. So great reason to return to the area.
Tumblr media
Day 7
Today we were heading home but on route, we decided to visit Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury, which is a French-style Chateau, previously owned by the Rothchild Family. The restaurant was superior for this type of national trust site, but we chose a traditional English Cream Tea, which was a welcome snack before we explored the impressive interior rooms of this impressive building. Again this was a wonderful property with lots of magnificent artworks and sculptures. You could spend a full day at this site but we were heading home, so we could clean the van in readiness to return it in the morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is our first time in the Kent area and we were blown away by the number of things to see and do and we know we only scratched the surface. The motorhome experience was one we would also do again without hesitation. We have had a fantastic holiday and we crammed lots in and we would say if you're considering a holiday to somewhere new this is an area of the UK that is definitely worth your consideration. The people we have met have been friendly and extremely helpful and the changing landscapes from Coastlines to woodlands have been a joy.  Right I'm off to plan our next journey, wild camping the southwest coast path in Cornwall in a few weeks.

Truly Tropical! Some of games best beaches.
The image of a beach is often a sandy tropical paradise. Palm trees, tropical fruit, oceans, birds and wildlife. Of course, let’s not count the blistering hot sand and sunburns. In games, the beach level is often an early level, it symbolizes fun and relaxation as opposed to difficulty. This is not always the case however. I have lived either on or near a beach for the near entirety of my 22-year life. To celebrate where I came from, I present to you a list of beaches in video games! Grab your sunscreen, your umbrella and your towel and get ready to get sandy!
Tumblr media
Emerald Coast (Sonic Adventure) Ah, the first level of sonic Adventure. This level is set on a tropical beach and a series of islands and stone pillars. Four of the six characters have a stage here. As sonic, Tails and Gamma, you race over sandbars and jump from boardwalk to boardwalk. As big you just…fish…but it looks nice at least! Spike traps litter some paths, a lighthouse stands tall and proud on the islands, and a giant whale is in the mood for some sonic food. Overall, as the first true 3d sonic level, it does a good job! The music is great too!
Tumblr media
Beach Bowl Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy) A fun tropical beach that Mario can visit during his intergalactic adventure. This small area is primarily underwater. The surface is of several islands and a cliffside that overlooks the bowl. Underwater there are pillars of rock, some giant eels, and penguins taking fishing lessons. Try to jump onto the rope swing and dive in! Overall this level is small but fun.
Tumblr media
Treasure Trove Cove (Bajo Kazooie) Every time I hear about the levels in this game, people talk about this one. This level is a great example of a good beach level. The music fits, the palm trees, the boss crab, the pirate ship… A lot of cool things can be found in this level, including new moves! Now be careful swimming out into the water, because there is a very hungry shark that wants to eat you. On the top of the level is a lighthouse. So this level seems great for exploration and I can see why its considered one of the most iconic beach levels.
Tumblr media
Destiny Island (Kingdom Hearts) Ah, where it all began. Destiny island is the first level of the original kingdom hearts. This tropical island served as a hangout for the main characters, Sora, Riku and Kairi. Also some final fantasy characters can be found here too. A small island that serves as a tutorial, Riku was not content with just this small island and wanted to go somewhere else, in a weird twisted way he got his wish. The island was swallowed by darkness, and was only restored at the end of Sora’s first journey. The island would later appear in future installments, but Sora has yet to return to his home. So this island represent the humble beginning to what will eventually become one of the biggest franchises of the past 20 years.
Tumblr media
Phon Coast (Final Fantasy XII) The Phon coast is one of the many locations you will traverse in order to reach the end goal in FFXIII. This coast is one of the few places where the main characters relax for a bit. Some hunters have set up shop here and the concept of rare game is introduced here. Along the sandy shores are many treasures and many monsters, be careful because some of them can fly. Even though you will come back here often for the rare hunter quest, the overall beach is often left unvisited. Enjoy it while you can.
Tumblr media
Virmire (Mass Effect) This planet is a tropical paradise with massive waterways and cliffsides. On any other day it would be nice to kick back and enjoy the beach, unfortunately today is not a good day. The planet is under siege and its up to commander Shepperd to confront the main antagonist here. The commander and his allies will have to fight their way through an army of Geth soldiers, and even confront a reaper, in order to reach the end goal. In the end the villain gets away anyway… However this battle remains as the most memorable moment from mass effect 1 for me.
Tumblr media
The Beach (Donkey Kong Country Returns) The beach isn’t just a level, but an entire world to traverse in the wii game. True to its title, this level is primarily set on a beach. This beach has boardwalks, wooden contraptions, caves and sunken ships. Giant crabs patrol the beach and will attack the Kong duo. After overcoming a barrage from a pirate ship, a giant squid attack and dodging tidal waves you will be able to face the boss. This level is some tropical fun and a good romp.
Tumblr media
Ryoshima Coast (Okami) One of the largest areas in the Okami series. This coastline houses a city and several npcs. Cliffs, beaches and trees dot the coast. Initially it is cursed and has to be cleansed in order to explore. The ocean is home to a sunken ship that is said to hold treasures. Unfortunately for everyone, the sea dragon is rampaging and causing havoc. A lagoon can be found nearby too. This place is beautiful and is visited relatively early in the Okami game.
Tumblr media
Sunny Beach (Spyro 2 Ripto’s Rage!) This beach is home to some peaceful turtles that are being captured alive by poachers. The majority of this level is underground or in caves, but there is a beach there as well. In this level Spyro will help guide baby turtles to safety and defeat the poachers that want to turn them into stew. Explore every nook and cranny of the underwater portions to find all the gems. Once the level is complete, the baby turtles will be safe once again.
Tumblr media
Outset Island (Wind Waker) The beginning of Wind Waker takes place in Link’s home island of outset. This small tropical island is primarily a beach with a forest on the very top. A relatively quiet island that is far away from the more populated areas, and thus it does not see much action. Link’s adventure starts when his little sister is kidnapped by a giant bird that comes to this island. Later on, a mythical creature makes their home here as well. The inhabitants are friendly towards Link as well, giving a sensation of home. This island is also home to a special secret dungeon.
Tumblr media
The beach (Pokemon Snap) The first and arguably the most iconic level in Pokemon snap. This tropical trail has a decent amount of pokemon to take pictures of. Some pokemon won’t be exposed until later on, so this level will be revisited often. The beach is sandy, the ocean has a Lapras that occasionally raises its head. There are grass patches with pokemon hiding within them and some creeks and ponds as well. This level serves as a great tutorial, not fast pace or extremely hectic with who to snap a picture of. It remains one of my personal favorite beach levels of all time.
Tumblr media
Ash Lake (Dark Souls) A truly cinematic area, quite a shame its optional. This small portion of the game is primarily a sandbar that connects some giant trees suspended in a large calm lake. Upon your first visit, a large menacing Hydra will antagonize you until it has been dealt with. This area is calm and almost eerily serene, after said hydra is dispatched of course. Be careful going into the trees because basilisk make their homes there. At the end of the long sand bar is one of the last everlasting dragons, who will give you the ability to join a covenant. There is not much to gain from coming here, but the experience alone is worth the time.
Tumblr media
Cape Claw (star fox adventures) A jungle peninsula full of boardwalks, secrets and of course, beaches. This location is visited later in the game and is home to some enemy soldiers. Explore through sandbars, waterfalls and ruins to find the treasures of the area, including bars of gold! There is a friendly dinosaur here as well that Fox can talk to. Eventually there will be a temple that needs to be navigated as well. This level, or zone as it would be considered, is a great beach level. Tis a shame people don’t seem to view this game very fondly.
Tumblr media
Goo lagoon (Spongebob battle for bikini bottom) Ahh, Goo Lagoon… This level is one of the first levels in the childhood classic spongebob game. This level takes place on a beach and on a boardwalk. You’ll have to navigate over platforms, redirect beams of light and play mini-games a plenty. Be careful though, because none of the characters can swim, so the water, or goo more specifically, is an obstacle. Some new enemies will pop up here as well.
Tumblr media
Sentinel Beach (Jak and Daxter) One of the first levels of Jak and Daxter takes place on a beach. Some grassy cliff aligns this coast as well. A waterfall and a pool that is safe for swimming. Some ruins can be found farther back on the coastline. Be weary of the hermit crab enemies. There are some blue eco vaults here to allow some sky-high jumps, use them to explore the rock pillars. Overall this is a fun easy beach level, just take care not to swim out to far or else you might not make it back.
Tumblr media
Wam Bam Island (Borderlands 2) One of the most colorful locations on planet Pandora. Wam Bam island would be a vacation paradise, if said vacation was full of pirates, monsters, cannibals and assassins. A giant sea monster resides here, just itching to do battle with the vault hunters. On top of that, some assassins have been hired to take out the dwellers but they… lets just say they failed at their job. The few locals here are just like anyone else on Pandora, crazy. So have fun in the sun. explore an underwater tunnel, fight giant crabs and try not to meat your end by the hands of the locals.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that was fun wasn't it? Hope you don’t feel burned out or have sand in your eyes! Next time we are gonna look at some characters, who you may ask? Well lets just say they all share one thing in common, and that is a love for miniguns.

The Gulf of Siam Thailand-Your Tropical isle Hopping Journey Honeymoon vacation Location
Ever seen the video, The Beachfront? Idyllic beach locations, perfect seas and unending venture: the chain of isles inside the Gulf of Siam is the ideal spot for a sizzling-hot honeymoon, intimate but in addition adrenaline working.
Come getaway preparing, measure the many pros (all goods mentioned above) and downsides (costly airline flight, very long air travel) and you'll see that the benefits definitely outweigh the disadvantages. Lazing about on hammocks looking over this type of water, island hopping and forest trekking a la Leonardo DiCaprio inside the Seashore is the best fit for venture-getaway seekers.
The islands of Koh Chang on the east of the gulf, and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Samui on the west, are all within short and easy bus or train routes from Bangkok. On these small islands you'll find anything from beautiful, quiet shorelines, noisy and un-stopping complete moon parties, 5 star high end lodges, fairly sweet and uncomplicated cabanas, and also every h2o adventure imaginable.
Here is a two-week journey-getaway itinerary from Thailand's capital, Bangkok Town, to the main islands from the Gulf of Siam.
Below is the 14 Days Plan for Your Island Hopping tours Thailand Adventure:
Day 1:
Reach Bangkok international airport from the afternoon and go on a cab for the very affordable Amari Boulevard Shop Accommodation inside the center from the professional section (consult with your local travel agent, since this luxury shop hotel often hosts package deal handles Thai Airlines.)
After unpacking as well as a quick lunch or dinner of Cushion pineapple and Thai fruit juice for 60 baht (about 2 US dollars - makes up to the pricey airline flight! ), walk across the major strip from the place, loaded with souvenir and traditional gift shops. Back in the resort, reserve a very inexpensive carefully guided visit of your metropolis for the next working day. Then go out to the web café/travel book and outlets a shuttle vacation, about an hour eastern side, towards the tropical isle of Koh Chang.
Day 2:
After a young breakfast time inside the hotel diner, climb up aboard the bus around 8: 30 from the expertise and day the vibrancy of the area: the tuk-tuks tugging people over the road, blossom marketplaces with buckets loaded with clean blossoms and lovely Thai silk dresses.
On the visit, you will definately get to find out a number of the city's favorite scenery: the Fantastic Palace of Siam, Wat Pho Temple, as well as the famous Reclining Buddha (that also can make an look in the video, The Seashore).
Day 3:
Climb early on and find the coach to Koh Chang Tropical island. It is actually about 1 hour ride throughout the wonderful country. From Trat, you'll require a wonderful ferry journey on the normal water for the island.
After disembarking the ferry, hitch a ride on a friendly truck to Magic Resort - a family run resort with private cabanas and honeymoon suites right on the beach. The on-web site restaurant will serve scrumptious meals - natural curries, mango salads, spicy fish mix-fry.
Day 4:
Fulfill your hosts: Nong, the community fisherman, Neng, the small town Elvis (referred to as for his wonderful karaoke performing), and Henry - a part time expat from Germany who lives in the vacation resort a few months from the 12 months and is the English translator for your loved ones. They may be a riot.
Day 5, 6:
Still right here. You won't would like to keep. After singing karaoke, you have been to each of the area thatched-roof top pubs, ridden on elephants in the jungle and viewed villagers touch the rubber trees and shrubs.
You've peaceful about the breathtaking bright white sands from the beachfront and read many books from protect to pay for, or you've meditated about the h2o, seeing monks glide over the yellow sand inside their saffron robes. You're sitting beside the one you love, inquiring, "Is that this a honeymoon vacation? Or a fantasy? "
Day 7:
Returning to Bangkok. From there book a workout to the tropical isle of Koh Samui. It is possible to capture a comfortable coach or possibly a local flight to help you stretch out your thighs and legs, even though a lengthier ride.
Day 8:
You happen to be in Koh Samui, being at the high quality Amari Palm Reef Resort. It is here, using the unrivaled view of beaches, 2 pools, and hot tub services which you will delight in the intimate "honeymoon vacation" point from the journey (in the event you haven't presently! ) Wonderful palm-fringed, hilly landscapes, Cheweng Beachfront nearby, and merely minutes or so from Wat Prha Yai, home of your sitting Golden Buddha. Hire a scooter and trip round the isle. The scenery is wilderness.
Day 9:
Still in the pool area. You only can't depart.
Day 10 and 11:
Acquiring a little bit bored stiff? Catch a ferry over to another tropical island about 30 minutes north to Koh Phangan - rumored to get the recording website for The Seaside. Here you are able to snorkel the serious oceans and living room in hammocks in the daytime. Love a seaside Thai massage therapy for 6 US bucks. Then become a member of the Fifty percent Moon or Whole Moon party through the night.
Day 12 and 13:
Another quick ferry drive north goes to Koh Tao. This can be the favorite tropical island for most journey honeymooners because of its unspoiled splendor. The surfaces is hilly, a bit more challenging for your scooter to navigate, but much less touristy.
It is actually a great diving and snorkeling location and also boasts some terrific places for rock-climbers (all of the items for these adventure sporting activities are plentiful from rentals in the isle.)
Day 14:
To the big area by teach. After your final authentic Thai dinner, find a cab straight back to the airport. In the plane, prepare a strategy for when you'll after that profit for an extended stay.

June Gloom
Welcome back to the seemingly never ending carnival ride that is Kung Fu Breakfast. It’s June, one of my favorite months of the year for shooting in LA because it’s warm but not too hot, the days are long, and you get a good bit of that June gloom soft even light. Things on my end have been a bit overwhelming with plenty of things going on including my trip to Miami to shoot with Dahliaisdopey and her cam girl crew. Because of all that we have a GRIP of new sets. This might actually be a record of new sets for one post so let’s jump right in.
Easing things in is a new mini set with Ms. Petra Blair. Many of you may recall Petra’s first set in the forests of Switzer Falls from my last post in May. I invited Petra out for a drink at The Offbeat in my neighborhood of Highland Park. We wandered over to a late night laundry mat and shot until some woman working there kicked us out. Mini shoots are always fun in their organic nature and the story of what I do in my off time so hope you like it.
Several months ago Brittny Nicole took me down to San Diego to shoot with the babes of Little Black Diamond. On that trip I got to meet the owner of Little Black Diamond, Adrienne Abelle. Adrienne and I really hit it off and spent the next few months working on getting together for a shoot. We finally made it happen and enlisted the help of The Cosmic Daughter. The three of us explored a bit around San Diego before winding up on a beautiful little set built right in the Little Black Diamond warehouse. It was a really fun multi-muse shoot with vibrant colors everywhere.
I often go back and forth on my favorite types of Muses but rock chicks are always up there, including a new muse for me: BB. BB (of the band The Drained) is a mutual friend of my muse Xtine Reckless and we were able to connect on social media. BB had no real modeling experience, really only shooting some photos with her boyfriend and I thought she was a wonderful Muse. The two of us met up in Victorville to shoot at the abandoned George Air Force Base. It was super windy that day so we spent most of our time inside but you can see in the outside shots her hair just blowing everywhere. Love BB’s look and attitude and you’ll definitely be seeing more of her in the future (probably sooner than you think)
Last month I was very inspired by my solo adventure sets in The Bay so I decided to continue this new feature to the site including this new mini set I shot in the Los Feliz/Silverlake area. I actually wasn’t alone for this as I was with my friend Quinn but it has those solo vibes since I didn’t shoot any models. I did however shoot this beautiful Vhils/Shepard Fairey collab, a cute dog, and a Jurassic Park car amongst other things.
So from keeping it local we travel across the united states for my Miami sets. I’m going to do something a little different here and write about all of these sets together because really it was one main adventure that wielded seven sets. My friend Dahliaisdopey hired me and put me on a plane to shoot with her and her cam girl friends down in Miami. I arrived late on Tuesday night to a cute little Air BnB in North East Miami. I had no idea where Dahlia and the girls were staying until I got in the Uber and headed across town to Southwest Miami. Once I arrived I entered this dope house where I was greeted by Dahlia. Dahlia introduced me to her housemates Chloe Rydr, Daddy Daycare, and Neko. After a little meet and greet I got to work and shot solo sets with Chloe, Daddy, and Dahlia (Neko wasn’t feeling too well and decided to skip out).
I shot mostly around the pool area and a bit in doors with each of them but eventually I suggested we all get out of the house. We headed to Wynwood (Miami’s Arts District) where Dahila and I previously shot at one of my favorite abandoned places: The Old RC Cola Plant. My history with the RC Cola Plant goes far back as my first solo adventures to Wynwood in my street art days. The most time I ever spent there was during 2015 when I documented Angelina Christina and Fanakapan creating a mural inside the plant during Art Basel for The Bushwick Collective. Later I would do the shoots with Dahlia and Angie Mitchell there as well.
Unfortunately when we arrived The RC Cola Plant had crazy new reinforced gates and we were unable to get in. Still we had a fun shoot around Wynwood. After the shoot we headed to dinner at a fancy Mexican place where I met Millie Knoxx and her boyfriend. The five of us got amazing ice cream and then called it a night.
The next day I headed back to the Cam Girl Casa for more shoots. I shot more solo sets with Dahlia, Chloe, and Daddy around the house and eventually even got in the pool for the first shoot I’ve ever done where both the model and I were in the pool. I also burned forgetting how harsh the Florida sun can be. My favorite part of the pool shoots had to be the giant floating duck with sunglasses. I tried to include him in as many shots as possible. After some time Milli Knoxx and her boyfriend joined as at the end house and I shot a group set with Dahlia, Chloe, Daddy, Millie and the aforementioned Neko. I believe this was my first time ever shooting extensively with five models (my previous record is four when I shot with Satan’s Children) though I mostly wound up breaking them up in to smaller groups. Neko also had to leave us pretty quick which reduced the group down to four.
After a fun time in the pool, Dahlia, Millie, and I headed to the Master Bathroom where we shot a beautiful shower set. I’ve previously shot in showers just a few times but the last time was with Dahlia in Orlando so currently she holds the record for Kung Fu Breakfast shower sets! After the shower I chilled and relaxed for a bit at the house before shooting my final and favorite set of the group. Dahlia and Chloe put together a Velma and Daphne of Scooby Doo cosplay. I was pretty drained by the time we got to this set but the costumes just inspired so much creativity that I hit a new creative stride.
Overall this was a really fun experience to shoot so much content with so many lovely ladies over this period of time and I hope I get a chance to again. Chloe and I really connected creatively. She’s a badass and would just come out of the shower, nude, fresh faced and I saw how beautiful she looked and wanted to photograph her and she just smiled and started posing. We talked music and geek stuff and have since traded Spotify playlists. Daddy was a dynamo with a real spitfire personality. This girl gives no fucks and was on top of her game including the fun watermelon stuff we did in her solo set. Millie was really rad to shoot and had great chemistry with all the girls. We talked later that we both wished we had had more time to shoot. Fun fact: Millie and I are both New Englanders and Millie is a skater. I didn’t get to spend much time with Neko but she seemed really sweet and we got some fun photos during the group shoot. And of course I love Dahlia with all my heart and appreciate her bringing me out, taking care of me, and being a killer Muse.
Did you think my Florida adventures were over? Oh far from it. After leaving the ladies in Miami I headed North to go stay with my family in the West Palm Beach area. I got to see my niece’s dance recital, I wandered around West Palm Beach and checked out some street art, visited an old Courthouse turned Palm Beach Historical Society with my folks, went on a little day roadtrip with my older brother to Lake Okechobee, and went on a walk with my Mom around the neighborhood, shooting all along the way. I was in a Sunshine State of Mind
Finally before leaving Florida I got a chance to head down to Miami one more time to shoot once again with Angie Mitchell. Angie is one of my favorite muses of all time and I was so happy to get the chance to shoot with her for the time since our first time way back in the beginning of last year. We started off our shoot in this little cornfield near her house. I love when Florida doesn’t feel like Florida and this was definitely it. After that we headed to the island of Key Biscayne to visit an abandoned spot I’ve had my eye on for a while. The Miami Marine Stadium was the arena for boat racing and has been left abandoned for years. It was a wild place and I loved shooting with Angie there before we eventually got kicked out by some very polite security guards. We finished our shoot further down the island at this weird creepy park we found. I loved my first shoot with Angie but this might have topped it.
My first shoot back in LA reunited me with my homegirl Ingrid Mouth. Ingrid and I last shot at the end of 2017 so we had a ton to catch up. We head down to the South Bay of Los Angeles to hit up Sunken City and Angels Gate Bunkers. We started at Sunken City but there were so many people out that day it just kept getting so distracting (though we did get some rad shots). After that we made our way to Angels Gate Bunkers (my unofficial studio) and really hit our stride. This was a really fun shoot where we definitely got in to some weird stuff including the appearance of a tentacled strap on.
This next set might be the rowdiest shoot I’ve ever done. Getting back to LA I realized I had a lot of free time that week and hit up the one and only Girlwolf Cindy Clark who just happened to be free. We decided to keep things kind of local heading back to Downtown LA where we previously shot together. Cindy brought along her friend Viola and the three of us got super silly for the afternoon. I had seen Viola around social media for a while I swear we talked about shooting together sometime awhile back so I was really stoked to meet her. Viola was a super cool chick and I hope to shoot some solo stuff with her in the future. We sound some cool industrial spots around the outer edge of downtown, eventually making our way over to the Arts District.
We shot a bunch at this arcade bar by the name of EightyTwo. I’m always reluctant to shoot too much at private businesses in LA as most places either want to be compensated or just hate shoots all around. Cindy said she had shot before before so I figured it was chill. For a while it was and we got in a full look for the two of them playing all over the arcade games. The girls bought beers so that probably helped our cause. After we left Cindy and Viola realized they hadn’t closed out their tabs. After a quick outfit change and a little more shooting we headed back to EightyTwo. The girls bought more beers and we decided to shoot in the pinball room. Well after not too long a bouncer came barreling towards me yelling “ARE YOU DOING A PHOTOSHOOT?”. We agreed to leave despite the fact that the bouncer seemed to have more interest in scolding us than anything else. Finally on our way out he called out to us “FUCKING WEIRDOS” and that was it.
We threw together a few more outfits in the parking lot where we all met up including set off some sparklers that Cindy brought. Despite the scolding incident we had a wild time and probably never stopped laughing. Normally I like get plenty of solo shots during these multi-muse sets but I didn’t have the heart to separate the girls so this is all non-stop Cindy and Viola or Beavis & Butthead
Sometimes a Muse is new, but not really. Sometimes you’ve known someone for years but you just meet them. Maybe that doesn’t make sense but that’s the case with this next muse. Dri and I have known each other for years on social media through the world of street art. I’m friends with both Dri and her boyfriend Quinn on Instagram and started bugging Dri about doing a shoot together a few months ago. At first Dri was a little nervous as she hadn’t really done any modeling but eventually hit me about a month ago asking if I’d still be interested. I actually wound up meet Dri and Quinn in person just before I left for Florida. I met up with Dri at the Los Feliz coffee shop she works at and Quinn just happened to be there. Quinn and I left and went hiking with a friend of us for the day which is why I shot the Los Feliz/Silverlake set from earlier in this post. After she got off work, Dri met up with us and we all hung out.
Fast forward a few weeks to our shoot. Dri and I met up in the late afternoon and had a really rad shoot starting at her apartment building rooftop and trickling out to Downtown. Dri put together some rave looks and for someone with little to no experiences I thought she great to shoot with. We really clicked like old friends and put together a bootyful set.
In my adventures I drive a lot. I really depend on my car, but every now and then it’s nice to get away from it and jump on public transportation. When I got back to LA I needed to have a new adventure with Miss Chaos so along with the returning Liza, the three of us decided to take The Metro from North Hollywood to Santa Monica. We had a fun adventure though I have to say that taking the trains takes SO LONG. We stopped in Downtown for a bit before heading to Santa Monica. We shot some photos along the way so this set is sort of a mixed solo adventure set for me as well as a multi muse set with the ladies. My only regret is that I wish we had shot some stuff on the train.
Remember how I said' you’d be seeing BB again sooner than later? Well a few weeks after our shoot I caught her band The Drained at The Silverlake Lounge and decided to bust out my camera for some live music shots. The Drained really rocked and it was cool to see BB in her element. I didn’t tell her I was coming so she was really appreciative and grateful to see me. It’s always a fun time to see my performer muses doing their thing.
This next Muse is making her debut solo set BUT actually made her first appearance last month during my trip with The Spritely One and Steven Burhoe to The Renaissance Faire. Besides being such a big fan, Sprite also happens to work at The Ren Faire, so when we went together she introduced me to a ton of cool people including a girl portraying a Puritan and shaming the vistors of the Ren Faire, who’s real name is Cheyenne. Cheyenne and I connected on social and quickly made plans to shoot together. The two of us headed deep in to the forest to one of my favorite spots, Murphy Ranch. Cheyenne is a cosplayer and brought some dope outfits including a pinup type look and a super creepy exorcist type witch. We had a really fun shoot and also get in a more casual Cheyenne look. Sadly one of my favorite buildings at Murphy Ranch, The Stables, had collapsed in some time since the last time I visited. I had great affection for this building was and sad to see it ravaged by time, though these things certainly happen. The shoot was really lovely and Cheyenne and I will be reuniting in about a week during Anime Expo so stay tuned to my social media.
And finally the last set (whooo!) brings me back together with my love Rose Page. I travelled out to Victorville to see Rose. I had already shot with Rose at The George Air Force Base and had been there a few weeks before with BB anyway so I really wasn’t sure where to go shoot. Rose and I explored and wound up finding this really bizarre and cool park overlooking some train tracks. The park said it was by reservation only so we were really alone there and no one bothered us. Afterward we found a few little small spots to shoot before I realized how close we were to The Rock-A-Hoola Water Park. I hadn’t been to Rock-A-Hoola since I shot there with Laura Wrong because during that trip my car had been broken in to by junkies. I felt the magnetic pull of the abandoned spot and decided to risk it. Well once we got there we realized someone had broken in to one of the entrances to fence and we were able to drive right in and keep an eye on my car. We busted out a ton of amazing photos and I’m really glad I was able to go back to this location as it gives me such fond memories. It was wonderful catching up with Rose and the next time you see her here will be her maternity photos so congrats to Rose!
Before I got I want to take a moment to pay tribute to a Muse that is transitioning out of our world. Recently Mika Mae Jones had a seizure that caused her to fall and left her with severe brain damage. Her family has been very forthcoming with everyone on social media about what is going on with her and have stated that they are currently in the process of finding people to donate her organs to before she passes on. Mika was one of my first muses. I found out about the incident the day after my shoot with Cheyenne, which only hit harder because Mika was the first person I ever went to Murphy Ranch with. Mika had Muscular Dystrophy and still made the 300 stair walk in and out of Murphy Ranch. Though we only shot together once, I loved photographing her. She thanked me during our shoot for shooting with her despite the fact that she had chipped her tooth around that time after a previous seizure induced fall. She was a gentle soul and touched so many people particularly in our Los Angeles Art Community as a Muse, Painter, and Human Being. Mika was very important to my early confidence as a photographer and I will always be thankful to her for our time together. Thanks you Mika from the bottom of my heart.

Top 10 issues to do in Vietnam
From the world's largest cave to exploring the Mekong Delta to enjoying weasel coffee, Vietnam has an unimaginable quantity to offer. Here's our concepts for the Top 10 issues to do in this traveller favourite
1. Gentle a lantern in Hoi An
Selling handmade lanterns, Hoi An (Shutterstock) Each Tet (Lunar New Year), the stunning city of Hoi An is reworked right into a kaleidoscope of color and light as a part of its New Yr Lantern Pageant. The competition lasts seven days, with the highway from An Hoi Bridge to the Hoai River Square adorned with hundreds of brightly colored lanterns. Over 50 lantern workshops from the city take part within the event, every making an attempt to create the most stunning lantern. The colours are shiny and the designs strictly traditional. The center of the festivities is the old town, between the Japanese Lined Bridge and the Cau An Hoi Bridge, and spills out onto the surrounding streets and river bank. It’s crowded, chaotic and festive, with spontaneous singing and food stalls at every turn. It is as much a celebration for locals as it is for guests. Probably the most breathtaking sight is 1000's of lanterns floating on the river. For a minute sum, you can buy a lantern and set it free. Or hire a sampan to take you right amongst the lanterns or to launch yours additional out from shore. Don’t worry in case you can’t make it to Hoi An for the New 12 months. Smaller lantern festivals are held every full moon.
2. Visit Halong Bay’s equally spectacular neighbour
Bai Tu Long Bay (Dreamstime) Halong Bay is rightly considered considered one of Vietnam’s most lovely spots, a shocking bay dotted with 1,600 craggy limestone karsts reaching majestically for the sky. It’s on every visitors checklist and the rationale why at any given time there are over 500 boats cruising its waters. The bay is large, however it could still feel a bit crowded. Bai Tu Lengthy Bay, only a few miles away, provides the same jaw-dropping surroundings but sees only a fraction of the guests. Right here, the karsts rise just as majestically. You possibly can discover caves and tiny beaches, and you may clamber aboard conventional floating fishing ‘villages’ and eat seafood pulled contemporary from the emerald waters. Boat journeys to Bai Tu Lengthy Bay depart from the crowded dock at Halong City, similar to the ones to Halong Bay. You’ll just head off in the opposite direction to where the islands are rather less taller and slightly more spread out, however, in accordance with locals, a little extra like what Halong Bay was once like.
3. Cruise the Mekong Delta
Mekong River boat (Dreamstime) After travelling over four,000 kilometres from the Tibetan Himalaya, the Mekong hits Vietnam and slows down to a extra languid pace. Passing islands, paddies, stilted villages and a way of life that hasn’t modified for centuries, it’s as if the river wants to take it straightforward and absorb the view. Hitch a journey with a cargo boat and you can do precisely that too. Merely find a shady spot to hitch you hammock and gaze listlessly at faraway riverbanks as your boat, weighed down with fruit and rice sacks, ploughs the treacly brown circulation. Or take one of the many business cruises that ply elements of the enduring river. The cruise from Cai Be to Can Tho is widespread and an effective way to expertise an evening on the river. As you travel to vietnam southwards alongside the Mang Thit River linking the Tien Giang and Bassac programs, the channel turns into so slim you can peer into the riverbank’s rickety stilted houses.
4. Drop into the world’s largest cave
Hang Son Doong cave (David W Lloyd) Quang Binh province is a wild area of barely penetrable jungle-clad limestone karsts that occupies Vietnam’s skinny middle, near the border with Laos. The area is riddled with a whole bunch of deep caves, together with one of many largest on the planet – Hang Son Doong. It comprises a cavern so tall that a skyscraper could fit inside it. Your base for visiting the caves is Phong Nha, a small city that is the epicentre for the world’s caving adventures. Right here you may hire both guides and the gear you’ll have to descend into the caves. If going underground doesn’t appeal, the area's also famous for trekking. Nearby jungle is peppered with beautiful waterfalls and an active and noisy population of monkeys and flying foxes.
5. Take pleasure in a cup of weasel espresso in Buon Ma Thuot
A civet considering another coffee (Dreamstime) Buon Ma Thuot is the regional capital of the central highlands of Vietnam, a gorgeous space of thundering waterfalls and the traditional villages of the local Ede folks. Look out for stilted buildings reached by a ladder and marked by carved breasts. In this fiercely matriarchal space, they can solely be used by the women of the house. Buon Ma Thuot can also be the center of Vietnam’s thriving espresso business. The Trung Nguyen espresso firm is the big player here and there’s not a nook of paddy field or industrial zone in the space that doesn’t bear their logo. The upside is that the espresso right here is superb, especially the weasel espresso. Weasel coffee is the Vietnamese variation of Indonesia’s Kopi Luwak, produced with the help of small weasel-like creatures referred to as civets. The civet eats the espresso berries, passes them quickly, and imbues them with a uniquely bitter style. Aficionados declare it is the finest espresso on this planet and are prepared to pay big costs for it. You'll be able to get pleasure from it at the supply for a fraction of the cost.
6. Search for Vietnam’s greatest pho in Hanoi
Pho. Now open. (Dreamstime) Pho is a Vietnamese staple, a quick, tasty meal created from four easy substances: clear stock, rapidly boiled beef, rice noodles and herbs or green onions. In Vietnam, you’ll discover it served on road corners and upscale restaurants and in every family house. Hanoi has gained a repute as the pho capital of Vietnam. Every restaurant right here boasts a secret recipe with knowledgeable locals searching for out favourites and adding there personal twist with a squeeze of lime or a touch of scorching sauce, often made in house. Observe the lead of the local beside you. A present favourite is Pho Skinny on Lo Duc within the historic French Quarter. This unassuming traditional pho home, with picket benches and laminated tables, does issues somewhat differently, stir frying the meat in garlic earlier than including it to the soup. Local foodies insist it gives the pho an unusual smokiness, not present in other eating places. Locals agree. Pho Thin is at all times packed.
7. Perceive Vietnam’s bloody previous in Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City museum (Shutterstock) Greater than 60 per cent of Vietnam’s population were born after the tip of the Vietnamese War. But that doesn’t mean their conflict-torn historical past is ignored. As a nation, they've moved on. However the sacrifices made by each side of the conflict are still remembered in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City Museum has many informative exhibitions, and explains the nation's bloody past through photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. It's sensitively carried out, with out glossing over the atrocities, and (quite mockingly) is housed in the Gia Lengthy Palace, where Ngo Dinh Diem spent his last hours in power earlier than his assassination in 1963. The Warfare Remnants Museum is a more grisly – however equally important – reminder of native atrocities. From eerie bomb remnants and first-person accounts by struggle veterans to a bloodied guillotine and pictures of horrific napalm burns, this is a chilling reminder of life not-too-way back.
8. Go to church Vietnamese-style
Worshipping in the Cao Dai temple (Dreamstime) Tây Ninh, a busy city on the Mekong Delta, is perhaps probably the most unlikely holy metropolis on the planet. Right here, amongst the busy streets stalls and noisy visitors sits Cao Dai Temple, the Holy See of the Cao Dai religion. Caodaism is a peculiarly Vietnamese hybrid faith based in the Twenties. It fuses Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, occult and Islam with the last word intention to break free of the cycle of life and dying. Hedging its bets, the sect reveres, among others, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed and even French novelist Victor Hugo. From a distance, the temple’s towers resemble a French parochial church. Nearer inspection reveals an eclectic facade with sword-brandishing gods, swastikas, a Communist red star and an Orwellian all-seeing eye. Prayers are carried out 4 instances a day, with the one at midday fashionable with day-trippers from Ho Chi Minh City.
9. Cycle Hue
Cyclo drivers in Hue (Dreamstime) Midway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, Hue marked the divide between the north and the south through the Vietnamese warfare. Set upon the pretty Fragrance River, it has all the time performed an essential part in Vietnamese historical past and is dotted with essential historic websites. Additionally it is an important place to cycle. Set off in the cool of the morning and head three kilometres out of town to the little identified Tiger Fighting area. It was Vietnam’s model of the coliseum, a spot the place elephants and tigers would combat to honour the power of the monarchy. Next, head to Tu Duc Tomb earlier than reaching Vong Canh Hill, the most effective spot for panoramic views of the Fragrance River. From Vong Canh Hill it’s downhill to one in every of Hue's most atmospheric pagodas, Tu Hieu Pagod, positioned in a tranquil and picturesque pine forest. Swing by the tomb of Minh Mangl, the second emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, before heading back to town. Upon reaching the walled fortress of the Imperial Citadel, you could have two decisions: take a leisurely cycle by means of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and Vietnam's version of the Forbidden City or enjoy a calming drink down the Perfume River. Sound too much like arduous work? You discover any variety of cyclo drivers available to do all of the exhausting work for you.
10. Discover romance at Sapa’s love market
Hmong women at a market in Sapa (Dreamstime) The market city of Sapa, in Vietnam’s mountainous north, first turned widespread as a French hill station in the Thirties. Set on a 1,650m excessive mountain ridge, the town boasts cool air, fabulous views of the Hoang Lien Mountains and a vibrant market attended by hill tribes from the surrounding countryside each Saturday. The city's grow to be increasingly standard with vacationers, however there are nonetheless outdated traditions hidden in its secret corners. A kind of is the Love Market, the place Dao (and H’mong) men and women come from miles round to sing songs of love to one another. Held on the finish of buying and selling on the Saturday markets, over-zealous visitors taking intrusive photos has pushed the custom underground. The Love Market still exists, but now it takes place in secret places at midnight, well away from the intrusive gaze of visitors. But if your curiosity is real and you'll find an area prepared to belief you, hill tribe romance can nonetheless be discovered

The Olympic Peninsula is known around the world for its beautiful mountains, its beaches and the Twilight Saga.  Well, there’s more to it than that.  We’ve spent countless days exploring the OP and not just visiting our old favorite haunts we’ve known all our lives, but also exploring places that are new to all of us.  That’s the joy of the Olympic Peninsula and why we’ve got a handy guide to get you familiar with our favorite region of the Pacific Northwest.
So, why visit the Olympic Peninsula over the Oregon Coast or the Eastern Seaboard?  Well, quite simply there are fewer tourists here and more opportunities to be in the middle of nature with nobody around.  The quietest place in the USA is on the Olympic Peninsula.  The original metropolitan center of the Puget Sound area is on the OP.  The largest successful dam removal project in the USA is on the Peninsula.  So many reasons to visit!
Locale of the Olympic Peninsula
You can drive to or take a ferry to the Olympic Peninsula depending on your starting point.  If you’re visiting Seattle and want to explore the OP you can hop a ferry from either downtown Seattle or from Edmonds.  You’ll have to drive about a half hour to cross the Hood Canal Bridge and from there either head south along Hood Canal towards Lake Cushman and the Pacific Ocean or head north to loop around the Olympic Mountains on Highway 101.  The other option from Seattle is to drive around through Tacoma, but that takes forever with Tacoma’s awful traffic.
If you’re coming from the north, such as Victoria or Vancouver BC, you’ll also need to take a boat.  From Victoria BC, you can drive onto the Blackball Coho Ferry for an hour boat ride into Port Angeles.  From Vancouver BC you’ll need to cross the border into the US up near Blaine/Bellingham and then drive south towards Whidbey Island.  Head through Anacortes and across Whidbey to the Port Townsend ferry.  Boom!  You’re on the Olympic Peninsula!
Tip:  for either the Coho (Victoria) or WSF boat (Whidbey Island) you can make reservations for your preferred sailing.  We highly recommend reservations for either otherwise you’re at the mercy of every other traveler.
Port Townsend: a Victorian Seaport
The perfect start to an adventurous visit to the Olympic Peninsula is with a day in Port Townsend.  Established in the 1800s as the primary seaport for the Puget Sound (prior to the railroads declaring Seattle as such), the town was built to be beautiful and have all of the features of a keystone city:  Victorian downtown, mansions uptown, amazing courthouse complete with looming bell tower…and a castle. Eventually Fort Worden was built and then eventually decommissioned… but then became the backdrop for the movie An Officer and a Gentleman.
Today, it’s got everything that a tourist could want.  Local beer (PTBrewing), local wine (Fairwinds Winery) and cider (Alpenfire) are available throughout the town.  The NorthwestMaritime Center is right on the water and ready to pull you into wooden boat culture.  Fort Worden has beach, woods and WWII bunkers for exploring, as well as the Point Wilson lighthouse and the most amazing field for flying kites.  I didn’t get into all of the shops in the downtown, because that’s its own day, but hit up what I just mentioned and kids and adults are set for fun.
Tip:  if you can set aside two days for the Port Townsend area you’ll be good to go.  It’s the perfect seaside town for relaxing and exploring, and weekends really are best.
Beaches of the Olympic Peninsula
We live by a beach, but we are really far into the Puget Sound, so there aren’t actual ocean waves.  Also there’s not a ton of sand. Cue the Olympic Peninsula…
Such cool beaches:  enormous drift wood at LaPush or the Dungeness Spit, the softest sand ever at Salt Creek, tide pools on the Strait of Juan de Fuca or at Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park.  What makes the beaches here so different and fun is that they are playable with kids.  The sand isn’t dry and blasting your eyes with from the wind.  The shore is gradual, so there’s lots of sandy space.  The waves aren’t the size of tsunamis straight from Japan so you can actually play in them when it’s warm.
The beaches of the Olympic Peninsula are great for spotting wildlife too.  We get a lot of seals all around the Puget Sound area, and the sheltered beaches on the Peninsula are prime places for raising young seal pups.  Also, we’ve seen grey and humpback whales just from the shore on several occasions; you just have to keep a look out.
Tip:  bring binoculars year round to watch for passing grey, humpback and orca whales.  We’ve been able to see whales with the naked eye in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and off the beaches of Olympic National Park.
Tidepools on the Olympic Peninsula
We’re a bit obsessed with the ocean and not actually being a mer-family we have to enjoy it in ways other than living underwater.  Luckily, our kids are just like us dads.  They love to play in the water and sand, but now they’ve been exposed to something even better: tide pools!  Tide pools, for those who don’t know, are the low spot in rock outcroppings that are full of water after the tide goes out.  This means that there is an environment that can hold life even at low tide.
For a child who loves the sea, this is the perfect spot to see all of the tiny friends that normally are out in the water.  We often see hermit crabs, anemones, sculpin (fish), chitons, huge barnacles feeding. limpets, mussels…  Also, the rocks are home to many pelagic seabirds, so it’s great for bird watching at low and high tides. The tide pools on the Strait of Juan de Fuca are really fantastic.  They are easy to traverse as an adult or child, or as a parent wearing a baby in a pack (with caution).
Tip:  the best shoes for tide pooling are sandal-type shoes with a little traction.  They’ll provide good footing on the rocks and then dry fast.
Alternative plan:  if the Olympic Peninsula isn’t close enough when you’re visiting Seattle or Portland, check out Whidbey Island’s tide pools, or if you’re south, the Oregon Coast has a plethora of opportunities for them.
RULE:  do not take anything from a tide pool.  Example: an empty snail shell might actually be a hermit crab’s home.  Would you want somebody to take yours?
The two best tidepool areas we’ve found on the Olympic Peninsula are Salt Creek Recreation Area and Ruby Beach at Olympic National Park.
Hiking on the Olympic Peninsula
The Olympic Peninsula is where the mountains literally meet the sea.  What this means is that you can either hike hike or walk hike.  For hardcore folks they can traverse the Olympic Mountains from all sides, climbing Mt. Rose or heading up out of Staircase by Lake Cushman.  For those of us with kids, we’ve got some other options.
The Hoh Rainforest is one of our favorite places because it makes us feel like we’re walking with gnomes.  I know, silly, but when you’ve got little kids to entertain along the way, it’s nice to be able to look for gnomes.  The Hoh is so dense with moss and fallen trees that it’s almost like another planet.  The streams are full of algae and other plants; they look like alien rivers.  Sol Duc Falls is also absolutely incredible for the lush forests and totally PNW experience in Olympic National Park.
Other easy hiking includes heading to the beach areas for walks in the sand or if you’ve got the time and energy, trekking all of the way out to the Dungeness Spit lighthouse.  There’s such a variety and with something different to see at each stop, you can’t go wrong.  Hurricane Ridge just outside of Port Angeles is also a great day hiking spot, with views going all the way to Victoria, BC and Seattle.  Beware of mountain goats at Hurricane Ridge.  They’re not indigenous and are still angry about it, so they’re not friendly.
Tip:  despite being called a temperate rainforest, the Hoh can actually be rather hot and dry.  Be prepared with lots of water and the energy to carry little people, as the mugginess can be draining.
And another thought if you want to go hiking with toddlers and younger:  for younger kids, having an actual hiking child-carrier is very helpful and will make you all feel much better about your adventure when you realize how much more comfortable it is than just a standard baby pack, such as a Bjorn or Ergo.  Kelty Kids and REI both make great child-carrier hiking packs if you need to invest in one.
Whale Watching on the Salish Sea
There are a few approaches to whale watching.  1.)  Set up a chair on a bluff or beach and wait for the whales to swim by, hoping to catch a glimpse.  2.)  Hire a random guide in a marina in Sequim or Port Angeles to take you out on a small boat and hope that they are whale-wise and responsible.  3.)  Spend the extra money to go on a whale watching expedition with a company that guarantees sightings.
It sounds weird that they can guarantee sightings, but here’s why:  the reputable companies all work together to share whale locations as they’re spotted, thus making for quicker sighting and more positive guest experiences, thus building their businesses and awareness of whales and their plight.  It’s all a rather good set up.  Since the tour companies are regulated and the Fish and Wildlife chaps are out in their boats monitoring, the whales are treated well and given wide berth for going their own way.  The experience is great and there’s nothing like seeing the wonder in your child’s eyes when an orca jumps out of the water in front of them.
Tip:  excursions are typically 4-5 hours, but it’s worth the time to be on the water and see such beauty, regarding the sealife and sights.  And there’s no shame in being prepared with a little entertainment for younger kids, as boat travel isn’t always the most exciting part of the day.
There is, of course, far more to do and see on the Olympic Peninsula.  Native American culture thrives in several areas, so watch for totem poles.  The Twilight Saga was filmed on the OP and going out of Port Angeles and Forks, you can go on Twilight themed tours.  There are some beautiful National Park lodges to visit or stay at from Lake Quinault or Kalaloch up to Lake Crescent. And camping!  Everywhere! Seriously, you could do a two week vacation here easily and everybody in the family will have an amazing time.
We have all kinds of other ideas for visiting the Olympic Peninsula including more hiking recommendations and options for where to stay.  If we were to break down the must-see sights for a tight vacation schedule, here’s what we’d say to do:
Port Townsend – Victorian charm, great food, local beers
Hurricane Ridge – hiking and epic views across the mountains

Despite the fact I prefer volcanic to arctic, the air in Faenza these days is inescapably infernal. Today a mischievous humidity also creeps about so thick and damp it seems an unruly throng of teenage boys holds a bucket above, dripping hot droplets on passersby. But I still have memories of the Appennini outside Modena where recently I went for a mountain-bike powered sojourn and the air was cool as a cucumber — er, cetriolo.
Tumblr media
Go Lisa’s bike, go! Dai!
The first morning, leaving with my friend — let’s call him Luigi — somehow became comically difficult. Even exiting his parents’ house was its own unique struggle — it was one of those mornings where both of our heads may have fallen off if they weren’t connected to our necks. We forgot forks, then found them again, victoriously managed to fit two bikes and a surprising amount of camping gear inside the petite car, made it to the store and managed to tackle dinner and aperitivo but spaced lunch (until our stomachs started growling). We made a u-turn and hit another store for sandwiches. On the way, a wasp launched into the window, somersaulted off Luigi’s arm, wedged itself between my shoulder and the seat and bit me like a mad, miniature Dracula. By the time we applied After Bite, wrangled taleggio e proscuitto panine, drove to the trailhead, unpacked the mess that was the car, reassembled bikes and repacked the car, we’d cleared the noon hour like an Olympic hurdling champion.
Tumblr media
To think we almost tried to ride to a rifugio with all this crap…
During those days, my friend and I circled the stomping grounds of his youth on our bikes like happy vultures. For him some of the terrain was familiar, only he viewed it now (excited, endearingly like a kid on Christmas morning) from the seat of his new red steed; for me, it was all new and fantastic.
Mornings weren’t early ones. Nights were spent, after a cold but free shower at otherwise buttoned up Rifugio Capanna Tassoni, nibbling cheese and big green olives and sipping Sangiovese at a picnic table, waiting for tuna pasta to come together on dueling stoves. Of course, we forgot a couple of key ingredients: oil and salt, but — Bear Grylls style — instead used oil from the tuna can and olive juice. Later, with stars and fireflies as our audience, he played guitar and I sang and squinted at lyrics of old partisan songs emanating from the worn-in strings. The nights, it must be said, were veritably cool and — I’m sure to never live this one down — I forgot one important article. Yes, Luigi, I (the mountain “expert”) departed for the mountains without a jacket.

Monte Cimone, here we come…

Maps are neat…

Colazione (breakfast) 🙂
Three days of perfect weather allowed for daily two-wheeled journeys of about 20 kilometers (13 miles) each with 700-900 (2296-2956 feet) meters of climbing. We discovered (or rediscovered) cool forests and mountaintops with curving single-track spines, rocks jutting from their craniums like stubborn chins and views to either side stretching farther than our imaginations. And we perfected the art sweating very profusely. If there suddenly had been a lakeside photo shoot one or both of us — gleaming in the mountain sunlight — would’ve been hired on the spot.
Tumblr media
Hike-a-bike section complete!
We devoured sandwiches on ridge tops, presiding over the expansive views like king and queen of a relatively wild kingdom. Or on the patio of Rifugio Lago del Scaffaiolo, where the buttery sun warmed the nearby lake sharing the same name and melted the cheese on our sandwiches, along with any cares lingering in the corners of our sleepy eyes. Or we dined at splintered ski area porches where old couples tanned and bright yellow Snow Rabbits waited patiently for winter’s white blanket.

Snow Rabbit!!! (aka Snow Bunny?? :))
For dessert, we destroyed a package of Haribo Happy Cola, one of my favorite pedaling pleasures. And in our downtime, I taught Luigi the questionable virtues of “That’s what she said” jokes (“she said that!”) and he taught me the names of (fake?) constellations. On rides, I took way too many pictures of everything per usual and he shot lovely videos of flowers, mountain scenery and me attempting to mountain bike (and inevitably dismounting too early for what he had in mind :)).
“Not much biking up there but the view is nice,” said the only other three mountain bikers we saw.
On the road to Monte Cimone.
Same same.
Once upon a time I truly loved to mountain bike; I arrived in Colorado in 2005 with only a duffel bag and a suitably decent navy blue and white Giant. Later that year, I broke my collarbone aboard (or rather, Supermanning off of) the Giant in spectacular, go-big-or-go-home fashion: three fractures and surgery. Afterwards, I was timid on a mountain bike and never quite recaptured the reckless joy 20-year-old Sylva found.
But — like so many other facets of life now — everything is coming back around. The treasure map led to Italy and I’ve unearthed all sorts of gems, including mountain biking! On this trip, miraculously (for me at least), we managed to kick some technical butt. The trail scored some goals too… I fell off Lisa’s trusty little Trek more times than I can count, often in the inevitable slow motion fashion that allows enough time for: I think I’m falling? Yep, I’m falling. Oh, look, blueberry bushes…
Tumblr media
Getting to the ridge on the first day.
Tumblr media
Cascate (waterfall) del Dardagna.
Another notable dismount occurred in the woods, when I somehow managed to stick to my bike like After Bite to a wasp sting. A sharp, steep corner started it all; according to Luigi my front wheel popped out and he thought, “I’ll get off my bike and help her.” But somehow, I stayed astride, almost saved it, then slid through a shortcut between two innocent bystanders/trees. I hooked one slim trunk with my left arm, swinging around it (still astride my bike) like a pole dancer. At this point, Luigi thought, “I should get my camera out and film this…” Turns out he’s quite the little film-maker, but my bicycle dance move remains committed to memory alone…
Tumblr media
Look! A meowntain!
By adventure’s end, I had a pedal bite on the back of my right leg that would put a pit bull’s to shame and so many unaccounted for bruises I’m not sure if I won or the mountain bike did. All I know is the good vibes are taking the trophy. Probably because I always feel most at home in the outdoors. And with no home at all right now I was instantly content in the Appennini, even laying on a bike grease-stained sheet observing butterflies and a leaf blowing in the wind that I felt oddly connected to. Or awakening in the wee hours to a lingering, eerie call (which Luigi’s bro correctly thought was an owl). I fell in love with the proud peaks outside Fanano, the radio-tower crowned Mt. Cimone (at 2165 meters or 7100 feet, the tallest point in the northern Appennini) and — as a word nerd — my favorite alpine feature, the Libro Aperto (or Open Book).
Tumblr media
Greenery!
On the eve of our return to normal life, we returned to Luigi’s parents’ house, just high enough on a breezy hill to dry off our freshly washed mountain bikes. If we turned around and shaded our eyes, we could spot the mountains in which we’d fallen off our bikes quite recently. That evening, his delightful family put on a barbecue (perfectly executed even without my dad’s jet-powered Man Grill), replete with local sparkling wine and flavorful grilled local cheese and Romagnolo sausage. I was so tired my Italian was even more pathetic than usual — I think I actually said “I like horse” to his brother’s lovely wife, who owns four horses. We retired relatively early, for Italian standards, especially since we had to catch a train eons before the lazy hour at which we’d risen in previous days…
Table set by the cutest mom in the land…
Late night guitar playing with full bellies…
Post-Apenninos, I’ve traded mountains and forests for beaches and rivers and an open book for an open computer; yesterday, I turned in my article for the Italian magazine, Ossigeno. I also started tutoring the bright little munchkins downstairs in English. And Lisa returned from more tour leader adventures, after which, attached at the hip, we lived like rockstars for a few days (kicked off by a cameo from her hilariously awesome air traffic controller friend Nico). More on our wayward, water-themed escapades on the next Sylva Lining…

Some of the prettiest faces this side of the Adriatic…

Nico, Lisa and Sylva enjoying Boca Barranca… again…
