So uhh.... I really dislike the Traffic light trio kid designs in the show because to me they look like the old art that just made babies look like shrunken adult men because literally nothing changes about the characters besides the height. Which lead me to decide I wanted to show how I would design the traffic light kids.
For Mei, Because her family seems rather strict i decided to make her look a bit more cleaned up. She explained in "Coming home" how she wasn't very proper when she played, which her parents looked down upon. So I imagine they would've liked for her to usually be more refined in how she looked - which means when things get out of place or messed up from her playing it's seen as a bigger deal. I also gave her some scales by her eyes because mei having dragon features gives me life and i think they look cute.
For MK i just made his hair shorter but also it's not exactly sticking up because he doesn't have his headband yet. He's got pretty simple clothes for the most part, with the coolest thing being that he has light up shoes (i like to think that's what drew Mei to him when they first met. she's not allowed to have light up shoes haha). He still is predominantly orange in color palette and I gave him some shorts because he's a pretty active kid so he likes to move around a lot. (Also headcanon that he didn't like pants all that much as a kid because they felt bad)
And then finally we have Red Boy. Which ohh boy i did the most research on this kid haha. I looked at other iterations of Red boy in different jttw media and kinda took inspiration from those! I took the most inspiration from his outfit in the 1986 series iirc (I cannot find my references I had collected...) I also got rid of his glasses because YES it might be petty but glasses hadn't exactly been invented yet in the era that jttw takes place in (Yes i researched glasses for this. Yes it was all done through spite). Anyways I decided to keep his hair long and I decided to put it up into two small buns - mostly becuz to me it would be cute to have them burst into little balls of flames hehe. I also gave him little bull horn ornaments to tie back to his family and also gave him back his spear. There's a version of him with and without a cape because some iterations have him with one and i thought it was cute :)

I completed every main mission and sidequests in Cornia (excluding the forbidden level 40 area)
This game is so fun and refreshing to play. When I played Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen a few years back, I dreamt of a game in the same vein that could grant you more control over how battles play out and Unicorn Overlord is a far more layered iteration of the timid concept I imagined. Going through all these menus and setting all these conditions, testing them out, doing it all over again to optimize them... This is so thrilling. I love micromanagement.
The more gameplay devices are introduced (like watchtowers, catapults, balistaes, rams, units to rescue in the middle of nowhere), the more fun it gets. Thanks to these elements coming into play one at a time, the stages never feel dull or the same.
I'll say Cornia on expert mode was hardly that difficult. It provided fun challenges so I don't mind. I'm just surprised that the highest level of difficulty feels like a normal mode. That being said I'm not a good judge of strategy games difficulty because I'm pretty much like that:
The presentation of the game is sooo beautiful. The hud, style and environments all fit so perfectly together. So few games seem to understand the value of these things nowadays and it's refreshing playing such a well-crafted one. I just wish there were more parity in character design: men with sillier outfits and animations and (a handful more) women with... let's say more pragmatic ones.
The soundtrack has been alright so far but I'll say: BOY am I glad to get out of Cornia. I think the area could have used 1 or 2 more songs for diversity (even if they kept a similar style or leitmotiv). Drakenhold is delivering in terms of music already!
Unfortunately the only tar so far is that the story is just so very... mid. At best, It's simple and serviceable even though you feel like you've seen it a hundred times before. At worst it's... mind control to handwave morality and responsibility away. However, I don't want to judge it too hastily and I hope to be surprised eventually.
Mostly, I'm genuinely, desperately, hopeful that recruiting everyone merrily will have dire consequences at one point or another. As much as I enjoy collecting every little guy on the continent, defeating a boss set on murdering you and/or terrorizing the countryside and having Alain choose between executing them or recruiting(/releasing) them after hearing their tragically lukewarm backstory (and everything ends well and fine) is becoming jarring. I want to feel regret, I want to feel pain. I want my decisions to come back to haunt me. I want to be crushed under the weight of my actions.
(DON'T tell me whether that's the case or not)
But so far the characters are just bad until they're good and once they join your ranks, they are unconditionally loyal. It lacks conflict and makes everyone far less interesting as a result.
(side note: this one isn't recruitable (thankfully) but Gaston in "Province of Famine" was one of the worst parts so far. You've got a tyrant pillaging his subjects' reserves, depriving them of food while bragging he's enjoying several lavish meals in a row with the most episodic cartoon villain presentation, but when you defeat him suddenly he wasn't actually that bad and was just keeping a reserve in case of famine. Surely... There was a way to write this with a bit more nuance and with less contradictions.
The worst part? I called that one as soon as the stage began so it wasn't even shockingly bad, just disappointingly so.)
Still, the characters themselves feel engaging enough. The writing is decent when it comes to interpersonal relationships. I've set one foot in Drakenhold and I was delighted to see Travis and Aubin come into the picture once again. It makes me hopeful the greater cast will develop outside of rapport conversations. And if the narrative truly doesn't deliver later on... I will have these lively and diverse characters to fall back on at least.

Before starting the analysis, I would suggest if you haven’t already, read her W.I.N.G. (introductory) commu (through the broswer game's English patch or on YouTube). If you don’t play the game, I would listen to her image song and read the lyrics to get a better sense of her character.

STYLE BREAKDOWN
Sakuya’s style is very straightforward, simple, clean, cool and fits a princely girl like herself. Her wardrobe has a good mix of masculine and feminine components as well as compliments her slender proportions and height.
Mode casual and mode-kei are two of the strongest influences in Sakuya’s style. A lot more casual than the typical mode style, Sakuya’s style introduces more color and design elements, but retains that trendy and cool minimalistic style.
The second style that is a big influence on Sakuya’s fashion is model-off-duty, specifically the 2010s iteration. As she is known to have a modelling career before becoming an idol, this effortless but cool style that compliments her height and figure fits her very well.
The last style we will talk about is mannish, a style that incorporates traditionally “masculine” elements to increase one’s elegance and femininity. Sakuya’s close relationship and respect for her father is one of the reasons why she dresses in this fashion (out of emulation).
Sakuya’s image color is a very dark teal-green color that fits the coolness and mature charm that she exudes. It’s a very masculine color as well, being close to a military green and symbolizing the calmness and freshness of an conifer forest.
Sakuya’s color palette mostly includes dull and neutral colors, giving off a chic and mature vibe like that of a seasoned supermodel. Most of her outfits contain only colors in the main palette, but sometimes she wears rich primary colors as accents to add a punch to her outfits.

STYLE ANALYSIS
Sakuya was scouted by Producer while doing a job as a model in the city. Though Producer asks her to be an idol with such passion, Sakuya questions his decision saying that she’s not the typical image of one.
However, Producer replies that he wants to produce her because she’s so different from a conventional idol along with her talent. Though her suave demeanor and ability to charm others drew Producer to her, she accepts as she was drawn to Producer as well for choosing her.
Due to being a model that exudes a lot of charm, Sakuya has many female fans both at school and due to her fame. She does a lot of fanservice like saying one-liners or kabedon. But it also includes the way she dresses, wearing very cool & unisex clothing in the earlier days.
Sakuya cherishes her relationship with her fans, and often does things with them in mind, putting aside her own health. It’s later learned that Sakuya values human relationships above all else, due to her childhood situation. Her fan letter replies usually span multiple pages.
It’s later revealed in her pSSR3 card "Rhythm of Happiness" that Sakuya was an only child raised by her father alone, as her mother died after she was born. Her father often worked late nights, leaving Sakuya alone by herself most of the time. Because of that, Sakuya is very lonely and hates solitude.
In her S.T.E.P. route, she revealed that her father passed away before she became an idol and her grandparents take care of her. It’s inferred that Sakuya dresses more masculine due to emulating her late father, dedicating her everyday style to all the love he gave her as he is her role model.
As Sakuya puts huge importance on human relationships, she loves L’Antica more than everything else. She often takes care of her members and often does fanservice for them as well. She is known to get emotional when there is a fight or when the group is apart for a long time.
Though her fashion style stays mostly the same throughout time, there has been a very recent development. Sakuya, known to only wear pants, wears a skirt for the first time in her pSSR8, “Make My Heart Swoon" after receiving this outfit in a gig and choosing to wear it casually. Sakuya, who is not used to being called cute, dresses more girly here.
Sakuya has had grievances with her image in the past. In her GRAD route, she has received letters asking her to revert back to when she was a model, and she’s had doubts on how to make everyone happy with her due to being very service-oriented.
For most of her career as a model and as an idol, she’s cultivated her image to charm and please others. However, due to Producer, her fans, L’antica, and her grandparents, Sakuya learns that to make others happy, she must search for a more selfish happiness outside of others.
So in her two newest pSSRs, we see Sakuya’s personal style shift to one that is more girly and cute. Her suave charm is still everpresent, but her fashion here is aligned to the Sakuya that is empathetic and sensitive yet still appeals to her cool side.
Needless to say, I’m excited to see the direction Sakuya’s fashion will keep going in, especially in ShaniSon. Like all the characters in Shiny, their initial appearance decieves how they actually are like, and that couldn’t be truer for Sakuya.

I'm rewatching What's New Scooby Doo and I have some thoughts; part 2
Progress disclaimer in part 1 =]
So I've talked about Shaggy, what about the rest of the Gang? Daphne is an overpowered queen the whole time and I love that shit. The show makes a reoccurring joke that she's able to do everything from unlock doors to renovate entire houses with whatever's in her purse. Icon and she knows it.
Velma's great as always with her usual smarts and sarcasm, and I find what they added to her personality very interesting. She fawns over certain boys with Daphne, she goes a little nuts the couple times that the Gang doesn't actually meet the bad guy beforehand so of course she didn't know who it was, and she seems to like expressing her femininity but at the same time is embarrassed by it. She volunteers to wear a Jasmine-eske belly dancer outfit and appears to be pretty comfortable, but in a different episode remarks that her "mother would have a heart attack" when she's wearing a wedding dress and an edgy wig for a Hex Girls music video. Ngl though I think that was a joke at my expense because I saw her and damn near hit the floor. Achievement Unlocked: Super Gay.
Fred is a himbo, we knew that, but special shoutout to the episode wherein the Gang is at a Renn Fair and he catapults Shaggy and Scooby into the brick wall of a tower, looks at Daphne, and says "I'll try to aim a little higher with you =] " . Bro. Also I don't know if this is the case for most iterations or not but I love that he's a fanboy. Mostly over sports teams but he's a smiley, eager dude with people he wants to impress. This did carry over to certain movies; I know he's a fan of astronauts too.
Scooby's the title character but there isn't much to say about him because he's a very simple and consistent personality; silly, scared, hungry, talking Great Dane. You don't need to change perfection.

1. Your first OC ever?
I’m not 100% sure I’m pretty sure it was a superhero who could turn into any animal in a puff of smoke, she had been raised in the woods like all by herself and so she knew a lot about nature. She had kind of like a wild unpredictable personality, and her outfit was a leopard print onesie with like ears on the hood. Her name was She-ra because I had see He-Man and my dad mentioned She-ra also existed and so I used that same name because I thought it fit the character. This was when I was like 8 btw. But my ninjago fan oc (there were like elemental dragons in the show at one point) who was a pink girl dragon with the element of magic could have come first.
2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs?
Which character is my favorite changes pretty often, like depending on who I’m most interested in at the time and I guess whether I’m interested in their inner emotions, so I would say I do have a favorite like at any given time, but not any one favorite like in the long term (I do have one it’s Rocio)
23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like?
Saida was originally created as part of like. A school assignment for my art class basically what I was doing was creating a magical girl team based on 2000s fashion. So every character had like their own power and then what it was was tied to like whatever their character arc was (for example one of them was like super nice but had zero self esteem, so she initially had the power to heal the other characters + amplify their powers, but then she became more confident and could like use her own powers as well which were related to like light/the sun).
It was like really simple so I finished the character designs but I didn’t really have a lot of interest in developing them any further. But then I did anyway for some reason + like 1/2 of the characters were abandoned but 1/2 of them I kept. Grace and Melanie have basically the same personalities except they’re not magical girls and they were like developed further into more in depth characters, but Saida’s whole like character was changed. She went from having no sense of identity (and so shapeshifting powers)+ feeling lost and helpless I guess to having to fake being overly confident because a lot of the things she wants in life seem impossible (whether it’s things that actually are very difficult like becoming a successful musician or things that are very plausible like having someone fall in love with her) and she’s convinced she’s going to fail at everything, so she like turned hard into acting as though she can do literally everything she wants and success is guaranteed until she starts to believe it, which at like the start of the story she kind of has, but she’s also stubborn and has an unwillingness to like reflect on her choices or think abt the future.
I like her a lot basically :) I think she’s a fun character to write she’s really funny (< I have like 5 handwritten pages that will never see the light of day and some comic page sketches) and I like her relationships with the other characters. But overall she’s completely different than the original concept (or than she was in some of the 500 other iterations of this story, I last described what the story is like a month ago and that’s outdated now. Right now it’s mostly a slice of life type story with very very minimal magic elements but that could completely change. At one point this story was about being stranded in the far future, at another point it was Halloween themed. So with this I mostly have the characters and their relationships established + like ironclad, but as for what actually happens to them… anyone’s guess tbh.)

Wardrobe & Styling: Risika PT1
As always, I’ll keep using original names if I’m talking specifically about the original iteration and in quotations and stuff, but I’ll be referring to everyone by their new names in all other situations.
Welp, I guess I'm officially back! In a nutshell, work got really busy and I got distracted by a few other hyperfixations (and I also got a bit self conscious now that I realize this blog actually kind of has an audience). I was going to do a big post explaining what I’ve been up to, but I it was taking too long and I didn’t feel like it, so I guess I’m going to just jump right back in!
I recently started watching a lot of youtube videos about fashion and costuming in movies and tv shows, so I thought it might be cool to do a short series about how I’d dress these characters for my version of the story. Starting, of course, with our girl Risika!
Canon outfits
We don’t get a lot of detailed clothing/outfit descriptions in general, but here’s what we have for her:
Chapter 1 (Now) - Black jeans and a black t-shirt
She doesn’t always wear black, but that was the color of her mood that day.
She also says in this chapter that she wears a silver ring set with a garnet stone
Chapter 15 (1704) - Mens clothes and tangled, unkempt hair
Wearing long skirts was getting too cumbersome for her
Chapter 18 (Now) - Black tank top → cropped body hugging gold tank top with black jeans
Generally keeps her hair its natural old gold color until the end when she adds black stripes to it.
Going off of just this, it seems like Risika is pretty utilitarian when it comes to clothing choices. Very simple, no frills (literally), mostly/exclusively black (contrary to her own narration)…up until when she’s dressing for her fight with Aubrey.
I take this to symbolize Risika’s character journey from being depressed, antisocial, and wanting to hide away from the vampire world (or at least pass through it unnoticed) to embracing her predatory nature and being comfortable with being seen and making her mark as a part of vampire society.
My Version
I want to stay along these same lines as the canon, but add some more nuance and details.
Generally, Roksana favors earth tones and natural materials (to show how attached she is to nature and humanity). She doesn't like things clinging to her too much but she also doesn't like things that are so baggy or flowy that they get in the way (to show her yearning for freedom).
She hates button-ups (too stiff and formal); she likes dresses and skirts in theory, but doesn't often reach for them on a regular day.
For the most part, she likes to keep things simple for her main apparel pieces—solid colors, basic shapes. Shoes and accessories is where she likes to have more ornamentation.
She tends to keep her accessorizing to a minimum because she likes to be able to move unencumbered. She hates carrying bags or wearing hats but she has a pretty extensive shoe repertoire. Her shoes are practical but well-crafted and even ornate.
When it comes to jewelry, gold is her preferred metal. She's not super into precious stones or pearls. She likes wooden or clay beads and semi-precious stones like jasper, jade, or lapis lazuli.
These days, she doesn't wear much makeup, but during time periods where heavy makeup was a thing, she'd wear it in order to blend in.
She typically styles her hair in whatever is fashionable at the time, but prefers to wear it down in its naturally curly/wavy state.
She's more interested in how things feel as opposed to how they look, so comfort, mobility, breathability, and texture are very important to her. She doesn't like feeling trapped.
I really want her wardrobe to speak to her innate longing for freedom and her resilience as well as her connection to the past. I also thought it might be interesting to hint at a secret craving for luxury (a contrast to the idealized image she has of her saintly brother in order to make her feel even more guilty and self hating after she becomes a vampire) and a desire for comfort (or rather, to stay in her comfort zone) but at the same time always being prepared to flee.

I'm still researching the specifics of what was worn at this time/place (it's been surprisingly really difficult to find info about late 17th/early 18th century fashion in Mexico) so I'll probably do a more detailed followup post later on, but Roksana would basically be wearing whatever other people of her social class were wearing in terms of silhouette, fabrics, etc. I don't she would have much flexibility when it comes to self expression at this time (clothing was expensive to make so she probably wouldn't be very trendy or experimental as a working class woman). I think she would favor solid colors over prints and she'd wear almost exclusively earth tones except for a blue rebozo (a long woven shawl of Mexican origin; image below) that was her mother's (blue to represent a touch of the supernatural). No jewelry, either, except for her rosary (although, I'm not sure if this actually counts as jewelry) that was passed down through her father's family.
Because she was raised without her mother and apart from her mother's family, aside from the rebozo, her clothing wouldn't really have many indigenous or African elements to it.
NOW
While she's not into metallics and synthetics, I do picture her style as kind of reminiscent of Y2K era R&B singers, especially in terms of silhouette (small, fitted tops, big pants, chunky shoes), but there are also some goth elements like corset tops, square or high necklines, the occasional puff or bell sleeve. She loves crop tops! For bottoms, she liked wide leg pants, utility/cargo pants, and joggers.
STYLE NARRATIVE
Closer to the beginning of the story, Roksana's outfits are very subdued. It's like she's constantly trying to camouflage. She's also wearing more historical looking clothes to show that she's kind of trapped in the past.
Towards the end, she starts to incorporate some bolder, more eye-catching elements, especially metallics, which also feel more futuristic, like she's finally ready to move forward and she's ready to be seen.
She also starts to dress a little more like Andros, who I picture as having very bold style.
Also, because in my version her hair is dark and curly/wavy, the tiger stripes in her hair aren't going to work out so well, so I was thinking of giving her tattoos, like tiger stripes along one arm, her shoulder and down her back (I have no reference photos for this because everything I could find on pinterest and google images looks stupid). This would not only symbolize her embracing being a predator, but it also shows that she's becoming a little more like Andros (who has tons of tattoos).

Good Design, Bad Design: Baldidition!
That's right, I'm doing it again. An idea so nice I'm adapting twice!
This time I'm talking about Baldi's Basics.

I believe that Baldi's Basics is the apex form of what a Slenderman style game (which is First Person Survival Horror but that's way more broad than calling it a Slenderman-like) should be.
You have a simple premise, you have a map you can eventually master to optimize your routes, you have a series of random events that you have to learn to work around and a little bit of RNG that can either screw over a run or make it a huge success.
In a lot of ways it shares the same values Buckshot Roulette has. A very simple game with a straight forward ethos on how to play it effectively combined with learning how to work around RNG or have it work in your favor.
In the end the game the will only run you a couple hours. You can play it again but not every game is meant to be played forever and for the price of free it doesn't hurt to play a game that was designed just well enough to accomplish it's assigned premise.
It's easier to see how good it is when you compare it to Slenderman.

Baldi and Slenderman are essentially the same character. The difference is that Slender doesn't have any tells or animation. Most of his outfit is black and the environment is mostly black as well with the only source of light being the flash light your character has. You gather the papers and hope not to see him.
Meanwhile Baldi is always physically on the map and doesn't magically appear ever, you can hear where he is and how fast he's moving, and he tracks you based on sight and sound.
Additionally he has counters. He can be pushed around and his hearing can be jammed with noise.
But Slenderman is an old game that broke the mold. Someone doing something better based on it's original formula is just how art is made in general. Well, how about Advanced Education?

Viktor's Advanced Education plays a lot like Baldi's Basics but, well, it does too much. It's easier to get lost in the school, the problems are harder to do and while do you do the problems Viktor can attack you. Viktor has way less tells and his main counter is much harder to use than the counters that were in Baldi's and you have to micromanage the chef (and you can still get ganked while doing that as well). It also adopts more of a creepypasta tone when Baldi's is specifically a parody of a creepypasta game.
The developer doesn't understand that what made Baldi's Basics work is that it was simple.
It may have been a Game Jam game but Baldi's Basics is what I would consider an example of
Good Design.

Hey it's Baldi's Basics again? Not Quite. It's Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered.
By the way, this is the video that inspired me to write this article but unlike Flaw Peacock's video inspiring me to write about Who's Lila out of how good it was and how it opened my mind to what exactly Who's Lila really is.
Minaxa's video left me feeling like the answer to the question posed by the title "Why did we forget about Baldi's Basics?" wasn't properly answered. He said that the answer was simple and it was. In fact it was more simple than the one he gave.
The real, most simple answer as to why later versions of Baldi's Basics go basically ignored is that everyone moved on.
Baldi's Basics v1.2.2 was a done game and a complete experience. The various iterative changes made by the creator Mystman12 were never going to be enough to keep people coming back because the core experience didn't change and it is still essentially the same game. Minaxa made it seem like it was our fault that we just didn't have the patience to wait for the game to come out in it's true form and that we are more used to rapid fire Fnaf style development.
But uh, that's not the case at all. Indie devs don't live and die on a fast development schedule. You can just look to McPig for that.

Pizza Tower took a long time to figure out just how much Wario it needed to emulate and how much Sonic it needed to add to really be the hit it ended up being.
