So if you follow me (and aren't just stopping by because you saw one of my funney viralposts), you probably know that I've been writing a bunch of fanfiction for Stranger Things, which is set in rural Indiana in the early- to mid-eighties. I've been working on an AU where (among other things) Robin, a character confirmed queer in canon, gets integrated into a friend group made up of a number of main characters. And I got a comment that has been following me around in the back of my mind for a while. Amidst fairly usual talk about the show and the AU and what happens next, the commenter asked, apparently in genuine confusion, "why wouldn't Robin just come out to the rest of the group yet? They would be okay with it."
I did kind of assume, for a second or two, that this was a classic case of somebody confusing what the character knows with what the author/audience knows. But the more I think about it, the more I feel like it embodies a real generational shift in thinking that I hadn't even managed to fully comprehend until this comment threw it into sharp perspective.
Because, my knee-jerk reaction was to reply to the comment, "She hasn't come out to these people she's only sort-of known for less than a year because it's rural Indiana. In the nineteen-eighties." and let that speak for itself. Because for me and my peers, that would speak for itself. That would be an easy and obvious leap of logic. Because I grew up in a world where you assumed, until proven otherwise, that the general society and everyone around you was homophobic. That it was unsafe to be known to be queer, and to deliberately out yourself required intention and forethought and courage, because you would get negative reactions and you had to be prepared for the fallout. Not from everybody! There were always exceptions! But they were exceptions. And this wasn't something you consciously decided, it wasn't an individual choice, it wasn't an individual response to trauma, it wasn't individual. It was everybody. It was baked in, and you didn't question it because it was so inherently, demonstrably obvious. It was Just The Way The World Is. Everybody can safely be assumed to be homophobic until proven otherwise.
And what this comment really clarified for me, but I've seen in a million tiny clashing assumptions and disconnects and confusions I've run into with The Kids These Days, is that a lot of them have grown up into a world that is...the opposite. There are a lot of queer kids out there who are assuming, by default, that everybody is not homophobic, until proven otherwise. And by and large, the world is not punishing them harshly for making that assumption, the way it once would have.
The whole entire world I knew changed, somehow, very slowly and then all at once. And yes, it does make me feel like a complete space alien just arrived to Earth some days. But also, it makes me feel very hopeful. This is what we wanted for ourselves when we were young and raw and angrily shoving ourselves in everyone's faces to dare them to prove themselves the exception, and this is what I want for The Kids These Days.
(But also please, please, Kids These Days, do try to remember that it has only been this way since extremely recently, and no it is not crazy or pathetic or irrational or whatever to still want to protect yourself and be choosy about who you share important parts of yourself with.)

San Antonio Cryptocurrency News
Inside of an unassuming convenience store along Callaghan Road sits an ATM that’s likely different than any you’ve used before.
The machine allows users to buy and sell Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency widely known for its volatile value — as well as the ardent support it enjoys from cryptocurrency enthusiasts and the intense skepticism many business leaders and academics have toward the digital currency.
San Antonio currently has about 31 cryptocurrency ATMs — largely located in gas stations and convenience San Antonio Local News stores — that are owned by several different operators. They allow users to  create an account, then buy and sell Bitcoin for a fee, typically between 5 and 20 percent, according to Coin ATM Radar, a site that tracks installation of the ATMs globally.
Coinsource, one of the largest cryptocurrency ATM operators in the nation, announced recently it was “ramping up deployment” of the machines in San Antonio and across Texas.
Tumblr media
The increase of the ATMs, Bitcoin advocates say, will greatly enhance the accessibility of the digital currency to the public as the machines are adopted, and will move Bitcoin from its original home on the fringes of the internet into the commercial and monetary mainstream.

Bitcoin is the most widely-used cryptocurrency. Proponents tout the decentralized nature of the digital currency, and its use outside of the traditional banking and financial system.
No central bank or single nation owns San Antonio Press Release or operates the cryptocurrency system. The goal for supporters of the currency  is to allow anyone in the world to make peer-to-peer monetary transactions at any time without having to go through financial or governmental intermediaries.
Bitcoin, which was created in but remained difficult to acquire until recent years, has fluctuated wildly in value since becoming more popular earlier this decade.
San Antonio Digital Currency News
After peaking in value at around $20,000 per Bitcoin in late 2017, the digital currency tumbled to below $3,200 per coin by mid-December of last year.
Coinsource, one of the largest San Antonio cryptocurrency News  operators in the nation, announced recently it was “ramping up deployment” of the machines in San Antonio and across Texas. Photo: Mike Fisher/Staff Artist On a recent day, Oct. 2, Bitcoin’s value hit $8,414 per coin, only to drop by around 3 percent hours later, according to coinmarketcap.com, which tracks cryptocurrency prices.
The number of cryptocurrency ATMs in the U.S. has dramatically increased over the last five years, especially within the last year, according to Coin ATM Radar.
The first Bitcoin ATMs in the U.S. were installed in March . By , there were 429 of the ATMs nationwide. Since then, the number has grown to over 3,800 cryptocurrency ATMs across the country.
In the last year, nearly 1,500 additional cryptocurrency ATMs have been installed nationwide.
“We are spearheading mainstream adoptability and accessibility to be able to buy and sell cryptocurrency,” said Derek Muhney, director of national sales with Coinsource, the cryptocurrency ATM manufacturer and operator.
“We definitely see (the number of cryptocurrency ATMs) going to six figures and beyond,” he said.

Coinsource, one of the largest cryptocurrency ATM operators in the nation, announced recently it was “ramping up deployment” of the machines in San Antonio and across Texas. But while local cryptocurrency investors laud the introduction of additional crypto ATMs in San Antonio, others are skeptical the currency and the ATM proliferation.
“Easy access to cryptocurrency through ATMs is actually detrimental,” said Ashwin Malshe, a professor San Antonio Local News of  marketing at University of Texas at San Antonio, and an expert in e-commerce and cryptocurrency.

“When you hold U.S. dollars in your bank, you don’t wake up the next morning and see your bank account is worth 50 percent of what it was yesterday. That can happen with cryptocurrency — that can be somebody’s life savings wiped out overnight,” Malshe said.
But crypto-optimists and proponents of the ATMs say they provide benefits such as offering communities without banks or credit unions access to financial tools, including storing and sending money.
One example might be a person without a checking or savings account purchasing Bitcoin on an ATM and sending the money elsewhere, or simply saving it to lower the risk of carrying a large amount of cash, according to Muhney.
Muhney said the ATMs provide a way for users to buy or sell Bitcoin instantaneously. Users can also exchange the digital currency for cash on the spot.
Traditional online Bitcoin exchanges — chiefly Coinbase — allow people to trade Bitcoins, but users can wait for weeks to receive their money or Bitcoins.
And the history of fraud, theft and illicit trade associated with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies often makes people hesitant to hand over their bank information to cryptocurrency exchange companies, Muhney said.
But with ATMs from Coinsource and most other operators, users typically create an online digital wallet and aren’t required to share banking information, Muhney said.
Tumblr media
And while the price does fluctuate, he said, it wouldn’t necessarily be hazardous to store your money on a Bitcoin ATM because the value of the currency continues to grow in the long run.
“Even at its current price today, it’s still up 200 percent from the beginning of the year,” Muhney said. “Yes, there is fluctuation, but year by year, its going in the right direction.”
Crypto-advocates are quick to point out that the digital currencies have been declared dead during price downturns throughout the decade, only to rebound and continue rising in value.
Alex Eaton is a co-founder of the San Antonio Crypto Network, where he consults with potential cryptocurrency investors and educates people about the digital currency.
He said his experience in the Army, when he was deployed to the Middle East as a medic, showed him what can happen when nations and their economic systems collapse.
“I just don’t think anything is too big to fail,” Eaton said.
Eaton supports the addition of more Bitcoin ATMs because it allows people to easily access the cryptocurrency, and the proliferation of the ATMs could make for a seamless global system, he said.
“With Bitcoin ATMs in every city across globe, you can travel with Bitcoin, download a Bitcoin wallet onto your phone and travel anywhere in the world,” Eaton said. “As long as you know how to securely store your bitcoin, no one can take it.”
Even so, Eaton is supportive of regulating cryptocurrencies to help reduce fraud. He admits even he’s been scammed.
“It’s so easy to scam people in this space because most people in this space are very amateur — they don’t know much about it,” he said.
Crypto scams can include hacks into  your virtual wallet, with thieves stealing your Bitcoin, or fraudulent exchanges that may swipe money you try to send through them. Some scammers have even created fake companies to persuade people to invest Bitcoin before disappearing with the money.
Both Eaton and Malshe said that in San Antonio Sports News the early days of cryptocurrency, it was largely used to anonymously make illicit transactions, primarily of drugs on sites such as the now-defunct Silk Road.
Tumblr media
Malshe dismissed the vigor with which crypto-advocates promote the digital currency as enthusiasm borne from self-interest.
“If I’m sitting on 15 Bitcoins, which I bought for pennies, now I have very strong incentive to hype that up and then I can make money. I’m going to always be very aggressive and strong promoting it to anyone who will listen,” Malshe said. “It’s a classic pump-and-dump strategy. This is the salesperson attitude.”
Malshe said he doesn’t think it’s likely Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies reach a point where they are used for retail or daily transactions en masse.
“I don’t see that. The governments are going to lose control of their own currency, which is super difficult to believe any country is willing to do that,” he said, noting that China last year has already banned all activity related to cryptocurrency trading. “The monetary policy of the country is very important.”
Muhney, of Coinsource, said when credit cards were first introduced as payments options midway through last century, businesses were likely skeptical about the idea of allowing payment via the new method. Eventually, of course, credit cards became nearly-universally adopted.
“That’s where we’re going with this. We make it as easy as it can be to be able to buy and sell this and as easy as it can be for business owners to accept it,” Muhney said. “All they’re doing is allowing themselves to receive an additional stream of revenue.”
But Malshe said you shouldn’t expect to use Bitcoin to make regular purchases any time soon — and he didn’t recommend investing in the digital currency or using the incoming ATM machines.
“If it’s a very knowledgeable person who knows what they’re getting into, I can understand (using cryptocurrency ATMs). But they don’t need an ATM. I overall don’t see this as a positive development,” Malshe said. “I don’t see a world where crypto is going to become easy to use everywhere.”

How I got my one word Instagram username
hey guys welcome back to the channel today I'm going to be talking about how I got my a g1 word Instagram username so let's get right into the video [Music] so I own instagram.com / breathe yes Oh G one word username and in this video I'm gonna explain kind of how I have secured that Instagram username it's really really simple I've been doing I've been doing like securing like one word usernames for about three or four years now pretty much there is a form there's forums all over the internet and people call it like the black market or whatever but it's just it's just forums that these og usernames actually built like og users have actually built and it's funny because like the forum that I use is called og users it's like a it's a whole nother world that you'll get into that you'll understand like oh my god I didn't realize like Instagram was doing this type of thing and there's a market for it pretty much in the one word username market it's just a bunch of people like buying selling and trading their Instagram accounts for profit yes you can make some serious serious money the most I've ever been offered for an Instagram account is around fifteen thousand dollars and I I dished out that offer because of personal reasons or whatever but for one word Instagram username specifically the most I've ever made and a day was about three grand that was because I was able to get the money via like Bitcoin and that's that's a big thing with the with like the whole community of og users and like just one word Instagram names in general but yeah pretty much how I got breathe like just Instagram back home slash breathe is I went on the forum maybe two and a half years ago I met up I met this guy on there I seemed legit he had a bunch of like vouches is what they call him like people like vouch for you if they did a good deal whatever but let's back it up a little bit my first Instagram account was coffin-like COF FIM that's like my first og username I try to turn that into like a personal page and then like a mean page and then I just got tired of the username so I sold it that was the one I sold for well I sewed it for about a thousand USD but it was the time when Bitcoin was like booming so I I got it in Bitcoin and then it shot up to around three thousand nine and i i i got you know i pulled out and got a USD for just uh that just kept on making me when they get like cooler in surrey arm usernames and yeah that was like my first one and then I had an Instagram account called coast that was my first ever scam like I am Scammon Bay scam me um so pretty much what happened was I bought it for I bought it for like four hundred dollars everything went smooth I did everything that I thought was necessary and that everybody was telling me to do on these community forums and then two days later I get on Instagram and I see a fucking post on my feed that like I clearly didn't post from that account Coast I was like what the fuck so I like logged in on coast and just said you've been logged out and has a fuckin og user if you're watching my this that's like the that like hits your fucking off your heart goes through your ass for real like you feel like I don't know you just feel like like you just fuckin lost your soul I've had a couple scares every now and again but yeah that's like that's just energy user lifestyle type of thing yeah I learned my lesson and then I figured out a way to properly secure these Instagram accounts and I wrote up like a three or four page PDF that you guys can actually download in the description that way if you are wanting to get into this stuff that way you know understand the way to secure these Instagram accounts I've even brought it to like the next next level which I have a physical key now that's all my Chane to login to my Instagram accounts and I have a key for that key but that key is 2,000 miles away so I took super super precaution when I got breathe yes because it's so OG it's so nice and I mean seriously guys breathe one out of a billion people I'm the only person that owns breathe yeah you can say that per your username but is it a one-word username the reason why this is a market and why it's such a thing is because it's just so recognizable it's like um yo you won't fuckin breathe like how'd you get that how'd you get that username like try it out yourself go on Instagram type in actually type in any word that you could ever think of and they exist existence of humanity and I guarantee you is taken I guarantee you all the words plus a underscore plus a number as taken and yeah that's how rare it is to have a one word username the way I got breathe is like I got it on a forum I paid and I paid I think I paid $300 for the username this was zero followers but I also have the Instagram account in the Twitter so it was like a package deal and then yeah I paid $300 for it and then my mind was always I'm always trying to branch it and like make it into something I can't like just have a one rib username just habit showing like that's just not me do I branded it into adventure like adventure of photography just like this because everything around me is like adventure gear and everything I just wanted a forum I was scrolling through the forum and then people were just listening out the usernames that they were selling and I found this guy I forget his fucking name but anyways he he had it and then he had a lot of bouches like I said and it's just people backing him up saying he's a legit seller and I was like okay cool so pretty much we got on kik this is what a lot of these people communicate with obvious that own these usernames only communicate through there and so we're communicating and this time we had a middleman and pretty much what a middleman is if you don't know it's like somebody that's gonna help secure the deal just it's almost like a fucking drug deal but online this is how crazy it can get my second one where I got scammed I didn't use a middleman and then that was like my lesson learned or whatever I always use a middleman if you do it make sure you use a middleman somebody that's can you can be trusted with and if you're watching this if you need to move them in I can be your minimun but you gotta watch out some middleman's take like a percentage or like a flat like flat rate fee to do the deal so pretty much what a mailman is so this is an old man this is this is a count buyer and this is me what happens is that count the count seller gives the credentials to the middleman and then I give the money to the middleman and then the middleman gives me the credentials account while he's holding on to the money I secure the count which is everything that I am that I written about in the PDF for you to download for free after I do that it takes about for me it takes about a good like three minutes to do absolutely everything after that the middleman hands over the money to the account seller and the deal is secured and like I said I take extra extra precautions and I actually have a physical key and not a lot of people even though oh gee users don't even understand that like what the fuck you got a key to it's not like a fucking key it's like a USB but it's a thumbprint and facial recognition on your computer if you want to know about that or where I got it send me a DM and then I'll send you send you what I know about it or how you can get it that's like military-grade encryption that's like a little crazy because you can have two factor authentication on your account now but yeah in this video I'm not going to talk about a lot about how I secured it like how I secure secure that account but more about like in general how I got it but yeah that's pretty much it it's just a forum there's tons of forums the best one I know is oh gee users they're good they're reliable they got reliable people but they also got scammers on there so watch out for them I just do research don't go in there like the first day find that account you're like oh my god I like this I like this username wait and just you know do your research like for like a week see like just read about the people that you're gonna buy from because a lot of these people want to do either the payment through Bitcoin which there's no chargebacks so as soon as you send that money to through bitcoins that person you better hope that you get the account that you want and you better hope that they don't take it back and like I said in that PDF it tells you how to 100% secure it and the main thing is securing the Instagram email the email is the most important part you can have the Instagram account and everything like that but if I have your email I got everything like the email is more important than the og email the original email is more important to me than that account because I can have I could get I can get right back into the Instagram account with the email easy so make sure you hide a percent scare the email also the account as well but yeah that's pretty much how I got my Instagram account just there forum we chatted on kik everything went completely smooth I actually got the Instagram account first yeah it was like three packages dude online I went to go get the Instagram secret the Instagram and then he was selling the kik breathe kick I believe - I didn't get that I didn't care about that because I didn't really like fuck with that shit I just downloaded it only win I want it to buy an Instagram account I'm am I gonna I don't know and then I got the Twitter maybe like three months after but totally secured him both and it's it's just a cool thing to have like you know I own a 1-up a billion user name account it's very very rare think of it as like digital or real estate that's how I think about it a lot of these people that own these one-word usernames are not thinking of it that first of all they're they're younger kids I'm not bashing on any of these people they're really cool it's just the younger kids they're like 13 up to my age like I'm 25 so but majority of them are really really young they have a ton of these Instagram user names and they're it's just a side hustle but I dunno I know one person that is like doing this and he's making like ten thousand dollars a month it's more than a side hustle type of thing yeah it's really cool it's just a it's like a side hustle niche though yeah oh yeah I asked you guys some questions yeah but tell me a video on how I got my one word username literally nobody asked questions so maybe next time next week hey guys what's up I just got back from the gym and I actually got a question from the polls that I told you guys about literally right after I left like for example I put this up I'll put that up every Wednesday and yeah I'll just be like any questions you want me to answer about the topic so next week's topic will be about like how to grow an each page or whatever from G's AK testa I said can I finesse a name that's unlisted and what I'm thinking that you mean zach is like if you search up a username and you'll go on the page and it says user can't be found or something like that so the answer is 50-50 yes and no may be more likely no because unless you have a Facebook or Instagram contact it's it's very very hard there's two reasons why that is where like you'll search a user name I can't think of the one I can't think of one the top of my head but if you search a username and it doesn't come up with anything there's two reasons one because Instagram has marked it as spam and they have it they don't they're not using it it's not active but like a previous user has used it and used it and did a bunch of spam on it like you know sending a ton of dm's or they're aware of like these people that like buy sell Instagram so they might snatch it away from you and then the most logical reason is the person has it but it is deactivated can't do this through the app you have to actually go on the web page on like your laptop go and log in an Instagram and then you'll be able to see a thing it says deactivate and it'll say like deactivate for 24 hours or or it'll ask you why and the new black I'll be back blah blah blah it will take off you're like you'll you'll still have your username but it'll just say can't be found on Instagram and that's pretty much the two reasons by much all for this week's video comment below actually what your favorite Instagram username or like what Instagram username that you wish you could have that said I will see you guys in the next week's video where I teach you guys how to create a niche account so with that I will see you guys in the next video peace

Please don't fall for this shit guys:Oh, no! A hacker (says he) planted a Trojan, (claims he) took over your computer’s camera and microphone, (purportedly) filmed you watching porn, (theoretically) has the password to your email account, and is threatening to forward the scandalous video to all your email and social media contacts unless you fork over Bitcoin!“It must be true,” many people have unfortunately thought about this new twist on an established sextortion scam. After all, he’s (apparently) sending email from your very own email address!Good news: thankfully, it’s not true. The sextorting phisher has not, in fact, demonstrated that he’s hacked your email. All he’s done is demonstrate that anyone can send an email claiming to be from anyone else. That’s nothing new; it’s just the way email is designed, though plenty of phishers use this fact to send spoofed email that looks like it comes from a trusted party (like you!).We’ve seen sextortion emails that have included an intended victim’s password – that the attackers actually found in a data breach dump – in order to make their claims to have taken over somebody’s computer seem legitimate. Those passwords are typically outdated. But with the latest spin, they’re also pretending to have access to their victim’s email account, by simply spoofing the sender of the scam email to make it look like the same email as that of the victim. The new variant of this lucrative scam was first seen targeting people in the Netherlands. RTL Nieuws reported on Thursday that the scammers had thus far bilked people of €40,000 (USD $46,000).The spoofed mail claims that victims’ computers have been hacked and that the targets have been filmed while watching porn. It gives them one day to cough up a €1000 ransom in bitcoin, or else the video will be sent to all of their contacts. Here’s Google’s translation of the Dutch scam email:Hey,I've been watching you for a while because I hacked you through a trojan virus in an ad on a porn website. If you are not familiar with this, I will explain this. A trojan virus gives you full access and control over a computer, or any other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen and switch on your camera and microphone without you being aware of it.That way I also got access to all your contacts. I made a video that shows how you satisfy yourself on the left half of the screen and on the right half you see the video you were watching. With the press of a button I can forward this video to all contacts of your email and social media. If you want to prevent this, transfer an amount of 1000 euros to my bitcoin address (If you do not know, search with Google "Buy Bitcoin".) Bitcoin address: xxxxxxxxxxxxAs soon as the payment is received, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 72 hours to make the payment. Then you know what happens. I can see it if you have read the email.RTL Nieuws analyzed more than 100 of the bitcoin addresses from the emails and found that the crooks had managed to talk people out of seven bitcoins as of Thursday, making it one of the most successful extortion emails to have ever made the rounds in the Netherlands. It may be just a slight tweak of an extortion scam, but people are unfortunately falling for it. You can see why: most people who watch online porn would be horrified at the notion that they’d been filmed while doing so and that their reputations could wind up in the gutter if embarrassing video of them were to be disseminated to friends, family and colleagues. It’s not hard to believe that a hacker could take over your microphone and webcam, after all: Crooks can use a piece of malicious software called a remote access trojan (RAT) to take over your computer, record your conversations, and yes, to turn on your webcam and microphone to spy on you.Victims of sextortionists have included those as famous as Miss Teen USA: Cassidy Wolf was blackmailed by a crook who used a RAT known as “Blackshades” to take nude pictures of her through her webcam. We’ve seen plenty of stories about hijacked baby monitor webcams, too, and we’ve seen one couple who didn’t realize that they’d been joined by a peeping Tom who spied on them via their webcam as they snuggled together to watch Netflix.Couple the too-real threat of RATs and hijacked webcams with an email that looks like it came from within your very own email account, and it’s easy to see how people can get strung along.Like most scam email artists, these criminals are adept at playing on our fears. These “I have your email account” guys are piling fear on top of fear – “we recorded you watching porn!” “we have all your contacts because we have your email account!” – to make a sky-high, multi-layered fear sandwich.Text in post stolen from: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2018/10/15/beware-sextortionists-spoofing-your-own-email-address/Edit: Found a super neat way to figure out whether or not your email account is really hacked or not:If the message claims to be from you, check your Sent folder. If it’s there, but you didn’t send it, your account has likely been compromised. Equally, if you look on Gmail, you can see “Last Account Activity”, which might give you an indication about whether someone else is logging into your account.

How One Pillow Manufacturer Is Putting Amazon Fraudsters to Bed, One Scammer at a Time
In 1990, my dad set up shop with my mom, selling this pillow with a hole in the middle.
He’s a dermatologist, and made the pillow to provide relief to patients of his suffering from tender ears caused by a condition called Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis (CNH for short).
They’ve been in business ever since then, and up until this year when my husband and I bought the business from them, they did everything exactly the same as they did back in 1990.
That means no advertising, marketing or sales channel changes in almost 30 years.
So, my husband I took over in January and have since changed everything (it is 2017, after all!)
We updated our website and joined BigCommerce in January of 2017.
From there, we put ads on Google.
Then, a few months ago, we started selling on Amazon.
That’s when our sales doubled!
My parents were shocked. “That’s the power of Amazon!” I told them.
We were going to be the next big Amazon success story –– I just knew it. And then, our listing was deactivated.
Someone else had the lowest price.
“OK,’ I said to my husband, “that’s impossible. Nobody else can have the lowest price for this pillow, because nobody else has this pillow. My dad invented it. We have the lowest price, because we have the only price.”
I was freaking out.
It was the first time either of us had ever experienced fraud — and I had no idea what was going on.
But that was then.
I’ve since learned that the kind of fraud we were subject to is a huge problem on Amazon.
I’ve also gone through all the necessary steps each and every time to make it stop. And for my business, I have it down to a science.
Let’s start with what not to do.
Take This Book With You
This full guide (all +17 chapters and +50 experts and their insights) is more than 35,000 words. That’s a lot to read on a screen.

What Happens When You Call Amazon About a Fraudulent Seller?
After that first incident, in my panic mode, I called Amazon customer service.
At that point, I had tried to do everything I could within seller central.
Nothing was working. So, I picked up the phone.
They wouldn’t tell me anything about the other seller.
I supposed that it made sense, after all, it’s private and it could be “somebody else’s business,” in theory.
But we’re the only ones who make this pillow, remember?
So I told Amazon:
“This person says they’re selling my product and they can’t be! Nobody else has my product. It’s my own product. Nobody has it.”
To be fair, they were very calm about the whole thing and let me freak out over the phone. They asked me to explain the issue entirely –– and that they’d look into it. So, I did.
Here’s what I told them:
Another seller listed my item
They used my picture with my hand on the pillow
They used the description that I wrote myself
They had *our* customer service number on there
And worst of all, they lowered the price to $5.47 –– when the cost is $59.95.
Let’s get transparent on the pricing part.
Our pillow costs us $20-something to make it. There’s no way somebody could have made a similar or knockoff product for even close to $5.
Of course, they weren’t saying it was a knockoff.
They were saying it was the real deal.
Our product.
Our custom-made, copyrighted product.
It was frightening, but Amazon was able to take that seller down decently quickly.
Problem solved, right?
Wrong.
As soon as that seller was taken down, a few hours later another one popped right up again. It’s part of the scam.
Beware the Amazon Seller Scam
Several years ago, Amazon had a big push to become a global marketplace, and so they opened themselves up and made it super easy for international groups or people to sell and open up a store on the platform.
Essentially, almost anybody, almost anywhere, can sell on Amazon within minutes.
It goes like this…
One scammer somewhere in the world says to a want-to-be Amazon merchant:
“Pay us a certain amount of money, and we’ll set you up with a store on Amazon. You pay us and we’ll set you up with a store with 20,000 items for sale. People buy the items from you, and all you have to do is drop ship. You never actually hold any items in stock at all.”
Now, I can only assume that somebody has a program which allows a “seller” to select many items at once and set a price that’s some very low percentage of the price that is originally on there.
It’s why our $59.95 pillow was listed at a little over $5.
I say that this is the case because when you go to the storefronts of these fraudulent sellers, they have hundreds, if not thousands of products listed, all at insanely low prices.
I’m at the storefront for HairWOW. You can see at the top left this newly launched store has 114,976 products! Including mine. Hopefully lots of other vigilant sellers are also reporting them. You’ll need the link to this storefront page to put in the email you send to Amazon.
The products they list alongside might be related, or not.
In our case, there was the CNH pillow, plus a lot of other bedding, and then a lot random stuff.
It’s almost always the case, however, that the scammers will target ‘Just Launched’ items, from genuine sellers with few or no ratings.
Yep, there’s my product, being “sold” by another seller and me. HairWOW is on top because of their lower price, and I’m second. If there was another lower price before mine, I would be bumped completely off the page. If that happens, just repeat all the steps in this article with each fraudulent seller. Usually the seller will be Just Launched, as in this case, and offer free shipping.
This has something to do with the way Amazon lists products.
If I’m a new seller (a genuine one) with no reviews, and I’m ‘competing’ as it were with two scammers, listing my product for a fraction of the price, then even though none of us has any reviews, the scammers will appear above me because their offering is less expensive.
Why Does the Scam Work In the First Place?
The scam works in part purely because of the sheer size of the Amazon marketplace.
Even if Amazon had a team dedicated to tracking down the scammers, it would be incredibly difficult to catch them all at launch.
In practice, the scam works because:
Before shoppers buy one of these fake items, they’re told it will ship from inside the U.S.
Then, as soon as they place the order, the fake seller changes the shipping information from U.S. Post, to China Post, and attaches a tracking number.
How do they attach a tracking number when there’s no product to send?
Yep, it’s fake, too.
Why put a tracking number in the first place?
Amazon pays sellers every two weeks. Items posted from China take between three and four weeks to arrive.
The plan is that they’ll get paid in two weeks, then, when in four weeks time the customer hasn’t received their item, that customer will complain to Amazon.
The customer will be refunded by Amazon, but by then, the fake seller has already been removed, and set up shop as somebody completely different.
Even if they succeed in getting a small fraction of those sales to work, the scammers are making money. The customer wastes time, but they eventually get their money back.
In the end, it’s the seller who’s losing out, because:
The customers are angry
Trust is broken
They might never want to buy from you again.
This has been the case with us a few times, and when I speak to customers who have been scammed, the conversation goes something like this:
“Hey, I haven’t received my order.”
“I’m sorry. I have no record of you buying from us.”
“I only paid $7.00”
And so I explain what’s happened, and usually they say, “Well, that sucks. Can I order now?”
But it’s a waste of everyone’s time.
Is There Anything Amazon Can Do to Fix This?
Probably.
Making sellers jump through a few more hoops before being able to list items would be a start.
Placing some restrictions on new sellers would help to curb the scammers, or at least slow them down.
But honestly, the way we’ve dealt with things on our own has been really effective, and if it can save you the hassle of going through what we went through, then I would be all too happy to share.
How to Stop the Amazon Scammers
There’s a bit of policing you’ll need to do yourself when it comes to taking down the scammers, but it’s totally worth it.
1. Keep checking your inventory.
If you have just a few items for sale on Amazon, then the first thing you ought to do is go to your inventory page on a daily basis — I do this multiple times a day — to make sure you’ve got the lowest price.
I’ve got my pillow, and I’ve got my extra pillow cover.
Those are my only two items. So I know that I should have the only price on Amazon.
There’s a little green check mark by each item saying, “Yes, you’ve got the lowest price.” I know if that’s the case, I’m fine.
This screenshot is of my inventory page. I checked it this morning and put a red box around the area I was looking at. I wanted to see check marks by both products showing I had the lowest price because I should have the only price, since no one else has my exact product. My extra pillow cover showed I did not have the lowest price, and instead showed someone else had it listed for less. Amazon puts a link there for me to click if I wanted to match their price – which tells me there’s a fraudulent seller out there (or maybe more than one) listing my item.
If you no longer have the lowest price, and you’re the only one selling that item, there could be problem.
If somebody has significantly undercut you on a similar item, do some research before going in guns blazing.
2. Get as many reviews as possible.
If your product has lots of positive reviews, it will help to keep you up high in the listings.
It’s also more work for scammers to fake reviews right after launch.
3. Be open and honest in your product description.
The other thing I do — since it’s my product that I own and manufacture — is to address scamming right there in the product description.
Here’s what I say…
“Beware fraudulent sellers! They don’t have a cheap knockoff version, they do not have a version at all. There is not an item, this is a scam.”
Explaining to people what’s going on –– that if they see something that seems too good to be true –– that it probably is, that helps a lot.
4. Send an email to Amazon.
The third thing –– the most important thing –– to do is to send an email to Amazon.
You don’t want to flood them with emails, or you don’t pester them with phone calls (it doesn’t work) but you do need to reach out.
The email is [email protected] — just send them one email per day.
If you’ve got a lot of fraudulent sellers on your account every day, just pick a time of day and then send them an email.
Here’s the format and process that I use.
Compose an email to [email protected]
Subject line: Possible Fraudulent Sellers
In the email body, put the name of fraudulent seller’s store, with a link to their storefront
Do this for however many fraudulent sellers there are
Underneath, say, “We believe the above sellers are engaging in fraudulent selling activity. Please investigate.”
Presto. They will sort it.
This is what it looks like:
Subject: Possible Fraudulent Seller
Body:
Seller Name: HairWOW (or whoever it is)
Link to their storefront: (paste here)
We believe the above seller is engaging in fraudulent selling activity. Please investigate. Thanks!
And then you wait. That’s all. If there are multiple fraudulent sellers, you can just list them all in one email.
Bonus tip: Lay the smack down!
Because I believe that everyone should be held accountable for their actions, I also go to that fraudulent seller’s store and click on the button that says, ‘Ask Seller a Question’, and I hit them with my standard shaming paragraph:
“Didn’t your mother teach you not to cheat people out of their money? Don’t you know you’re hurting people’s businesses? This is not a victimless crime. Shame on you.”
I have no idea how many times that’s worked, but it makes me feel much better.
I hope that helps you to navigate this more seedy section of Amazon, and that you won’t get discouraged from selling on what has to be one of the best platforms we’ve ever used — after BigCommerce, of course!

Online Dating For The Beginner
Nov. 2012 Online Dating for the Beginner My interest has been piqued and then I also feel a little sick to my stomach when I see the stories on the news about people whom have been catfished. Can people really be that naive, lonely, or desperate to be taken by someone online? Because of the internet, the rules and manner in which we date have so drastically changed. CAUTION should be flashing in big red letters on each page we open. After almost a year of internet dating and experiencing some of it firsthand I believe that I’ve become somewhat of an expert on reading between the lines, seeing what isn’t there, and most importantly- seeing what is right there in writing or photos that some lonely people may not see or want to see. Each and every dating site has a list of guidelines for posting your profile. For argument’s sake, let’s say that you post your profile and you’re completely honest on yours. You put up five or six current pictures of yourself in different settings, including a couple of full body shots. You might even have to fill out a questionnaire or a magical chemistry match tool. The site is going to find three (yep, or another allotted number) potential partners for you. So, you read their profiles- and personally, I have only found a handful in all this time whom have even seemed remotely like a guy I would be interested in. And- that is on three different sites. But, let’s get back to the profiles. I can only speak as a heterosexual female looking for a single/divorced heterosexual male five years younger to ten years older than myself living within twenty-five miles. Yes, you can set the parameters for your search. Here is how I read a profile- 1. The Photo.  This is the first thing I look at before going any further. Red Flag: If there is no photo, I wouldn’t even consider sending a message or responding to a message. No photo can mean the person is married and doesn’t want to be discovered. Don’t be naive enough to fall for the line that he doesn’t have a camera. Phones have them. I even have one of the dreaded bathroom mirror shots on my profile which is so five years ago, but I wanted a body shot. The photo does tell a lot about the guy/girl. If you are aren’t athletic and all the photos show the person skiing, mountain climbing, etc. then you should get the idea quickly that you may not be compatible. On the other hand, if the photos are all of the guy in bars and you don’t go to bars much, take note. Look at the other people in the photos, too. Pictures of his truck?  Lots of photos of her cat? Is he smoking or drinking, yet says he doesn’t? If the person only has one photo that could be a sign, too. On more than one occasion the man I met has been a lot older than the profile picture and I now truly believe that having more than one photo could have helped. Multiple photos can stop that because a lot can be taken from the background and if all the vehicles, clothes, hairstyles, etc. seem out of date- maybe the photo is older than the poster is trying to project. I don’t know if you noticed, I didn’t mention the cuteness factor. You know what appeals to you. If you don’t like beards or you have to see a certain look and don’t see it, then move on. I don’t really base who I will or won’t correspond with based on his facial appearance. I believe there is a lot more to a person than their looks. Men don’t have the luxury of make-up that women do and we cannot help the face God gave us. Most photos are of faces. And- I like men of all sizes, so that isn’t an issue. 2. Relationship Needs. This one is really important. When somebody lists they are on the site for dating and you aren’t, MOVE ON. You won’t get that guy or girl to suddenly decide to settle down. Or the opposite. If you are just wanting to date, don’t contact somebody who wants marriage or a long term relationship. There are also people who are looking for a sexual hookup. That is what they want and it this fact will present itself to you in your messages. This happens to me daily. If that is what you want, go for it. There are sites for that and even the basic dating sites have that as an option for a relationship. We all know there are sites for married people who want to cheat. Go there if that is what you want. But, I am not looking for  that. My response to men who send me a proposal of wild sex escapades? I politely answer back that I am sorry, but I am on here for looking for a long term relationship and I wish them well in their search. Once I send the message I seldom hear back. A few times I have gotten an apology and a couple times the men have still pursued it, so I blocked them. I am looking for a long term relationship. Plain and simple. Of course that is going to take time and so far my track record has been about one month or so before I get fed up with the man I have been dating. It usually takes me that long to determine that our lifestyles are completely different, our hours don’t mesh, or that the guy just irritates me in general. This is from dating men whom have stated they are looking for a long term relationship, too. I have wished them all well on their continued searches, but I won’t be on their journey. 3. Read the profile.  If the poster lives outside your travel range for meeting on a regular basis for dating- move on. If you are particular about grammar or spelling and it looks as though a first grader wrote the profile- move on. When reading the profile most people have a tendency to try to see exactly what the poster has in common with the reader. I think it is just as important to see what the poster has written that is not in common. Sure, you both like a couple of movies and Chinese food. Oh, and there is that wonderful fact that both of you are Aquarius. Okay, that doesn’t make you a match. He spends Friday nights out with the guys and you are a homebody or he loves hunting and you are morally opposed to it. She loves a romantic Sunday afternoon walking hand in hand while antiquing and you want to sit in your recliner with pro football on and don’t like someone clinging to you. Get the idea? Get real. 4. Now comes the message. Should you send a message and say hi or should you wait for someone to send you messages?  What I have learned from talking to men on these sites is that there are a lot more men on them than there are women. Men have to work harder to get a woman’s attention. I know that if you don’t send out a message, you are cutting your chances of meeting someone. Worst case scenario of messaging? No response or you get blocked. No harm no foul. You don’t know that person. Best case scenario could be that you meet somebody and you two hit it off.  Just one word of advice on the first message. Women are smart enough to read through a line of BS. Flattery is nice, but not necessary. A simple first message could be something like this:  Hi. How’s it going? I would like to get to know more about you. That message is really nice, it has a question in the message so the other person may feel free to answer back and of course getting to know more about someone can be fun. Go for it! 5.  How to avoid the Catfish.  Okay, you have received a message from a guy/girl you find interesting. a. Do not go to yahoo or an email to chat with that person. Many of these are scammers and the sites all warn of that even though many people still fall for it. Stay on the site to chat. All of them have chat ability or a way to send messages back and forth. b. Get to know the person for a reasonable period of time on the site before giving out your phone number for texting or skyping. Be comfortable and even use *67 before calling the first time if you don’t want to give out your phone number. c. Don’t think you are in a relationship if you have never met the person. You aren’t. You are only kidding yourself if you think you are. Don’t think somebody loves you if you have never met them. They don’t. When someone avoids meeting you, there is usually an agenda. I wouldn’t waste my time trying to figure out what it is. That’s their problem, not mine. Move on. d. With webcams and skype- catfishing need not happen. This can take the place of the meet and greet in some situations. Some people may shy away from this and that is cool because you never know what you may see on the other end. But, it is a tool you can use. e. The meet and greet. I addressed this in another blog, but it cannot be stressed enough that as soon as you feel comfortable enough to meet to the person- do it. This will either put a stop to your correspondence or it will be the green light to go forth. If the person you have been talking to does not show up- it is up to you to give him another chance for a meeting. I don’t find it worth my time. If you do reschedule and it happens a second time- you are a fool if you don’t stop communications as that point. If the meet and greet works out, then you are on the road to figuring out if you want to see each other again.
