Originally when Downpour was known only as a mod, Saint didn't had fluff. So I like to imagine an alternative universe where saint stayed smooth and every RW artist drew them like a fucked up sphynx cat

Decided to revamp my Sinner Slugcats so they're not all just multicolored scugs.

I did look into some of the symbols and stuff of the game, so the writing is more or less "Outlaw, Number", since I wasn't sure how to make a "Sinner" symbol in the RW language, so I just used Outlaw since it has the lowest Karma symbol anyway.

Intricacies under the readmore

Yi Sang: Inspired by daszombes' Deadlands video, he is a "Flying Slugcat", like a sugar glider or flying squirrel. He has no true flight, but it works

Faust: Some sort of Echo or associated. Has her own citizen ID drone of an unknown Iterator, and it also acts as a little scanner (inspired by @astragatwo's take on scug Faust). She still maintains Gourmand's crafting ability, but it might be more taxing with her smaller frame.

Don Quixote: A special breed of Slugcat meant to go fast, her legs are quite powerful, letting her make longer pounces or generally run faster than most other scugs. Obviously, her lack of weight makes her weak to poleplants/worm grass, but y'know.

Ryoshu: Similar to Spearmaster, but by way of King Vulture, she only has one spear directly connected to her that she can recall (it does not act like SM's feeding needles). Also, a subtle detail is that her ears are absolutely massive compared to most scugs, giving her enhanced hearing.

Meursault: (Perhaps a Purposed Being?) He has face armor not unlike a lizard, in fact he's about the same size as a blue lizard. His bite is quite powerful, and he's certainly the best to have in front going through pipes, as his face will deflect spears (should the scavs be aggro or something). He might also have better climbing ability, able to get on walls and such, but he's very heavy so idk

Hong Lu: Bioluminescent, like a fun mix of lantern mice and cyan lizards, he can "turn it off" as it were. His tail also can be used as a small flashbang, but obviously only once (per cycle). Of course, this helps with coalescipedes, but makes him a damn beacon otherwise.

Heathcliff: Still Artificer based, where explosions and such just don't really bother him and he's able to maul enemies (though obviously his bite is weaker than Meur's). He also has a pearl hanging around his neck of unknown use, but clearly given to him by someone special.

Ishmael: Rivulet, but even closer to salamander where she actually has fins, her ability to swim is obviously a cut above everyone else's. She's probably had a bad run in or two with Leviathans. Her cloak is probably a gift from whatever version of Queequeg this world has

Rodion: Also inspired by astragatwo, she's mega fluffy making her very warm. Though, this does make it annoying for her to swim if the area is cold because she'll freeze faster. I still like the idea she can carry more scugs on her, but idk. (She does look more like a fox, but such is the price of floof)

Sinclair: Saint-lite, and still pup-sized (he's an adult, just tiny like Don) so long as he's not at lowest Karma, he has limited ability to incapacitate enemies (not quite enough to ascend) and fly a bit with said ability. I basically wanted to reference his Mark of Cain somehow.

Outis: Ironically, just your average Slugcat. She probably has stuff going on with reputation or maybe she allows Echos to appear on first visit, or convinces Pebbles to not murder everyone immediately

Gregor: Definitely a creature that has been fucked with too much. Originally just a Slugcat that had been spliced with a centiwing (sorta like how the Miros Vultures are hybrids), he seemed to have got infected by the Rot, most likely when whatever Iterator structure he was hanging out around pulled a Pebbles

The Amazing Digital Downpour

Woe, Rainworld and TADC au be upon ye.

It’s mostly just the designs but I’m still going to ramble about what’s planned down below

So the general premise is ‘What if the circus was in rain world’ and this is it.

Caine and Bubble are the classic duo of iterator and overseer. But Caine has kinda forgotten his original goal and so has taken on the task of keeping all these not ancient ancients from going insane through fun challenges and adventures. Especially since there’s no escape from his can due to some technical oversights during his creation, and the whole cycle thing prevents anyone from truly dieting, so that’s not an escape either.

(If they die they just get ‘respawned’ the next cycle with minimal harm; everyone still remembering and coping with it)

Now on to the main stars of this show. Everyone here was at some point an ancient and only remembers attempting to ascend before suddenly falling from a random pipe within Caines structure. Oh and ending up in rather unusual bodies.

Caine has no idea where they come from nor how they appeared, so that’s a dead end. And escape is practically impossible as far as anyone is aware.

So what’s going on with everyone?

Pomni

Weird lantern mouse (her tail glows instead of her open tire body)

Absolutely minuscule

Practically shakes from how much anxiety she has

Otherwise she’s the Pomni you know and love

Just add on some extra existential dread

Ragatha

Mostly a normal slugcat

Just extra fluffy

Surpassingly craft for having less dexterous hands

Kinger

Scavenger

Just a weirdly colored scav

About as obsessed with bugs as he is with pearls

Somehow has managed to get quite the collection of both

Jax

Really weird slugcat

Got lizard in him or something

Still just as much of a jerk

Has absolutely gotten everyone killed once

Zooble

They’re just a mix of everything, you name it, it’s probably in there (somewhere)

Which has somehow led to them being pretty chill, guess all those instincts just cancel everything out

Takes full advantage of their size, and uses it to scare off Jax (no it has not stopped him from being the end of them)

Gangle

A garbage worm with some vulture

She’s still heavily influenced by her masks for her emotions, although to a lesser degree

Without them she looks mostly like a normal garbage worm (just red)

She gets very upset and angry, and will chase whoever stole or broke her mask (only does it for awhile till she tries herself out)

After she tires herself out she just acts generally mopey

Is in fact made of three different organisms, the smaller worms act as her arms

Bubble

It’s Bubble not much to say

He’s an overseer and acts the exact same, if not more annoying since he has more free reign

Caine

He’s an iterator, capable of controlling practically everything in his can

His face got destroyed before anyone can remember (Kinger doesn’t count)

Just as clueless on how ancients work, he didn’t get to talk with them much

He will often create purposed organisms and alter his structure to fit the daily adventure, trying to keep it from killing anyone

The structure is unusual, almost like it was made for what’s currently happening

With huge rooms and areas just mostly empty, and much more editing capabilities than most iterators

Despite being trapped in his room, he tries to stay connected vie Bubble and built in screens

Slugcats are incredibly comfy to draw when my brain is fried. Please enjoy them all

Also below's a bunch (aka a paragraph for each how'd that happen) of headcanons and thoughts about my designs because the brain rot hasn't really stopped

Survivor

The most average slugcat to ever slugcat. So instead I'll say that I decided to give the slugcats whiskers (that are probably closer to barbels on fish or the sensory tentacles on slugs). Also I know they're probably slimy in canon but nothing can stop me from giving them fluff. I like to think that slugcats are prone to weird mutations that lead to a very varied species and makes them easy to purpose.

Monk

Monk is about as average as Survivor except being a little smaller than usual for their age. I don't have many strong headcanons in the way of gender for these guys but I like to think of Survivor and Monk as big sister and little brother to parallel Moon and Pebbles in a way.

Hunter

Just having the absolute worst time. Any wounds Hunter receives quickly rot and stop healing and they are pretty much always in pain. When it gets really bad the rot cysts and tentacles begin to grow and sometimes attempt to eat Hunter themself. They know that it was No Significant Harassment's mistake that led them to getting the rot but aren't really mad about it. They just have a sort of a tired and somewhat grumpy “it is how it is” kind of attitude about pretty much everything.

Gourmand

Gourmand is from the same clan as Survivor and Monk and so is also fairly average, their standout traits being their height, size, and intelligence. Their also a little fluffier than average for maximum comfy hugging potential. Well respected in their clan and considered a legend of sorts for their journey into Five Pebble's facility grounds.

Artificer

Artificer's explosive abilities and abnormally large size are due to a combo of weird mutations and diet. The dark red marks are a mix of dried blood, scar tissue, and general explosive damage. She has damaged her hearing via explosions, has one working eye, and blown off most of her whiskers. She is practically running blind and is literally too angry to die. Fluffy but rough and course and just awful to hug at this point.

Spearmaster

Spearmaster has spines growing all along their back, but only the ones of its tail are strong and thick enough to use as spears. Their whiskers are also thinner and more similar to their spines (or cat whiskers in a way). Their ears are also cropped (like a dog's) and Seven Red Suns gave them a small coat to distinguish them as a messenger. Underneath on their chest is a small scar that marks the pearl's location (that is very quickly a big scar once Pebbles commits the worst surgery in Rain World history).

Rivulet

Rivulet is from a subspecies of semi-aquatic slugcats with increased lung capacity, seal-like fur, and a tail fin for steering underwater. Their whiskers have taken the appearance of gills. While useless for breathing underwater, they mimic salamanders in an attempt to confuse and scare off predators. Rivulet is an adventurer who left their clan to explore distant lands and keeps finding themself in trouble.

Saint

Incredibly fluffy to adapt to the cold but pretty skinny and frail underneath. Their tongue is rough like a cats (so are all slugcats but Saint stands out). As their karma grows, echo scales begin to appear along their body and they subtly glow and distort the close surrounding environment. Saint is just really uncanny to be around.

*Liked by everyone but me (and Least Favorite) is Saint because I just have such a hard time coming up with headcanons and designs that I like & find interesting for Saint. It feels like they're everyone's favorite thought experiment (/hj) but for me like. Idk. It's probably also that in a way they feel like they have the most concrete & "stuck" storyline

I used to think Surv was so boring I could NOT come up with shit all for them or for monk, didn't help that none of the fan content was of them (quite a bit of "surv" fanart is just using them as a generic slugcat imo)

*Like the character, not the design is Riv and Hunter to me but specifically the canon designs and trying to translate them into my art, Riv's gills end up looking like clown hair and Hunter's pink gives me the ick to work with for fur. But I love to make Hunter fluffy anyways

SOS is more of a plot device than a character to me and I don't find her all that interesting, I do like individual fanon versions of her though

Purple moon = good, purple moon in-game has like. A shade of purple I dislike + a blue that's SO CLOSE in value to it. Oh my god.

3. the sheer confidence you have to be self indulgent with the things that make you happy and not care if people hate them. i dont really ship any of the slugcats but your art makes me happy in a way i cant describe. ur so awesome and cool man

hehe i like to exaggerate faces sometimes. my slugs have long snouts, which is funny and is nowhere found in their canon designs- it moreso came from how i draw anthros in general.

to me scavs are fluffy. the babies are like little chicks with down feathers...

I'll be a little honest, I am a bit scared of the possibility of people hating me/turning their backs on me for posting art i want to express (it has happened multiple times in this fandom and it has given me trauma and panic attacks), but i post what i like anyway because im no happier if i were to keep them to myself, and the people who still stay even with some of my honest fumbles- I'm very happy to see. i'm glad my art makes you and others happy. rain world art where its mostly happy- a litany against the depression it gave me at first- it serves true to this day and im still fighting. thank you.

6. favorite thing to draw?

When drawing ganqing: hair (always fluffing it up and adding strange triangular streaks to keqing's hair that make zero sense lol), faces, and ganyu's horns. But honestly arms and hands too, because the gestures can express a lot imo. For all the lamenting over anatomy and how strange and hard it is, i think i've improved enough over time to generally just enjoy drawing the whole body of a character.

When drawing creatures: heavily depends on what kinda creature it is, artstyle etc. but generally fur. Like even if i draw dragons, i wanna add some fur. Slugcats are an exception lol, i've drawn them with fur before but i'm a firm believer of smooth, slimy slugcats. Other than that, ears, horns and claws are fun.

GANYU WITH A QILIN TAIL!!!! I'm enjoying all the new art of baby ganyu, but i'm rlly excited abt my "adult ganyu showing keqing her fluffy tail" wip lol. I can tell you i've been lowkey agonizing over having to draw clothes tho 😭😭 But i got over it and it's going okay, so i should be done with it maybe even today. Also what's funny is that ganyu's head in this drawing is a months old doodle i just repurposed for this drawing. I'm glad i got to actually use it for something lol

24. whats a compliment about your art that has always stuck with you?

One time someone said they "love the togetherness of this image" abt my drawing, and that was really nice, like yes!!! I succeeded at putting emotions into this image!!! Also you said "this is like straight out of a scene in my mind tbh" abt the exact same drawing, which i liked a lot too!!! Something abt humans connecting with each other thru art perhaps?

But I also really enjoy whenever people say they like the shapes i draw, or that my art and characters are " so shaped", etc. And character expressions!!

29. do you use a lot of references while drawing?

Yes, usually. Sometimes for simpler doodles i won't have any, or maybe only a few, but a lot of the time my canvas is cluttered with references lol. In-game screenshots, official art, irl photos, 3d model pose screenshots, my own art too. For my latest wip i took photos of my own arms hhhh. Sometimes it also just serves as setting the vibe tho, or general inspo, not necessarily anatomy or some specific thing. Depends on the drawing. (old examples below)

rate how fluffy you think every playable scug is

HHEEEHEEHEE U HAVE ACTIVATED RANDOM SCUG FACT TRAP CARD. So I think slugcats mainly go into three categories. Smooth, seal like, and furry. Smooth scugs have no fur. Rivulet and Gourmand fit this category for me. Their skin is, as you can imagine, very smooth, and the slug part of them comes a lot more obviously with a light layer of slime over them. The skin however can be very thick and difficult to cut. Seal like scugs have fur that is, well, like a seal! Survivor, Monk, and Spear master fit this for me It's very close to skin, very short, and usually very coarse. If u wanna think more familiar, think pitbull fur and other breeds like that. Not as much slime there but you still get the feel of it a bit. AND FINALLY THE FURRY GUYS. Hunter, Artificer, and Saint fit in here. Furry dudes are any scugs with just. Generally longer fur. Hunt and Arti both have spiky messed up, fairly sturdy longer fur, while Saint has far softer, thicker, puffier winter coat fur. There's also the points of like, shedding and getting thicker softer fur when winter comes around, but yeah anyway. FUR.

I don't have much time today but, starting off my H̶o̶a̶r̶d̶ collection of iterators, we have SVS and PL! or Seven Vultures Soaring and Pearlescent Light. I realized to late how similar SRS and SVS are name wise-

Here are some poorly drawn refs ^

Vultures is a generally introverted iterator, though not shy of communication. He's quiet and usually calm, sometimes a bit grumpy however. Pearlescent is his s/o, she's an absolute rambler who talks a lot about a lot of things. Really enthusiastic and friendly, but she doesn't really talk to her local group outside Vultures because she feels like she bores them with her rambling tangents. Vultures is always very happy to listen, however, and enjoys hearing her talk.

Before her ancients ascended, she made them a mini species of purposed slugcats who are very fluffy and light-colored. Her ancient colony was rather... posh? To say the least. She still has those slugcats around.

At one point, Pearlescent's communications array stops working. She can't seem to find the problem and all her systems look to be working, and Vultures ends up sending two slugcats to go find out what's wrong. The white one was larger and more docile, able to store more pearls in its stomach than usual. The black one is smaller, but an absolute fighter. Will kill centipedes and lizards 10 times it's size, but probably has a very carnivorous diet and definitely not responsible enough to carry any pearls. It would drop them in favor of bombs.
