So I’ve been loving all your FEH stuff! Your art is very very pretty it looks like candy and I want to eat it to become all powerful. But now I got a question! Got any thoughts on Anna? She also gets pretty sidelined by the plot which is a damn shame because I find her dynamic with Askr siblings FASCINATING. With all their complications with making friends, Anna seems like the only friend Alfonse and Sharena have successfully made and I would kill to know how that happened.
EXTREMELY THRILLED TO HEAR THIS HAHAHA esppp thank you!!! That is SUCH a compliment... deeply honored to have my art achieve edible-looking status 🫡
ALSO. I'VE. BEEN ROTATING THIS IN MY BRAIN SO BAD. The unfortunate thing I'll be upfront about is that I don't have a lot of thoughts about Anna, aside from like, appreciating her gimmick and finding her funny.
But I DO agree she does have a fascinating dynamic with the siblings. Like. I think it's so interesting to see how Anna is their superior, as the commander and leader of the Order of Heroes, while at the same time Alfonse and Sharena are literally the prince and princess of Askr. Which IS par for the course for the Order of Heroes to have royalty in their ranks, but still!! It's a dynamic I can't quite put words to, but it is SO interesting to see how it plays out. (Also worth mentioning though, I feel, Alfonse and Sharena wanted to join the order not as royalty but as themselves, as people. What they stand for, believe in, and want for the future, ect -- so their status doesn't always play a huge role, but, you can't erase it completely, esppp as they ARE the prince and princess Of Askr)
AND ALSO. All that said, Alfonse isn't afraid to call Anna out when he feels her schemes are getting slightly unethical LMFAO. Despite each of their status/titles/roles, they do feel like they're on equal footing. And with Sharena, her relationship with Anna is very friendly -- but I feel like that's also just how Sharena is LMFAO.
In my head though, the way I see it, each of their relationships with Anna do feel professional in nature? Which isn't to say it can't be personal as well, I do think each have bonds with each other. But espp when I've revisited Book 1, I got the sense that Anna is more of a boss and mentor to the siblings -- esppp when Sharena starts crying recalling the disappearance of Zacharias, Anna is quick to resolve it in a professional way and also take the responsibility she felt as the commander to all three of them (WHICH. ALSO. WILD TO THINK ABOUT. Like what IS the timeline here???? I WANT TO KNOW SO BAD.)
(also also that moment Was from Book 1, so maybe I'm not accounting for character development here, I only revisit books when I'm feeling VERY autistic about something specific in particular LMFAOO)
AND HONESTLY IF I. THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT THAT I go insane, like. I know it's just a consequence of Zenith being In A Mobile Gacha Game, and the point isn't really the world of Zenith itself it's to get all the guys from the mainline games to make money LMFAOO BUT. Askr feels so lonely and empty, actually. Like I feel like we have a more fleshed out/more world building for Embla than we do Askr! A LOT of fascinating family stuff there actually. But in Askr it's just Alfonse, Sharena, their parents, and Anna. That's it. And honestly I HAVE to wonder, like! Where did Anna come from, anyway? I know each Anna has their own lore, so I suppose she could just be from Askr, herself. And I guess it wouldn't matter any which way, but I am just so. I WANT. LORE. AND TIMELINES LIKE. When did Anna become the commander. How long has she been the commander. You've given me a whole new thing to violently chew on wood over HAHAHAH

A few months later-
For someone that prefers their skin to be flawless and smooth, Goo is awfully fascinated with yours. His hands constantly wander, tracing over your blemishes and imperfections.
"Hmm, I like your skin," his fingers run along your ribcage, taking his time, as if he's counting each one.
"What, to wear?" you ask him one evening, after he spent far too long pouring over your body.
He looks up from caressing a freckle on your hip and chuckles.
Well, that's comforting.
“Are you still mad, Princess?”
Damn this guy. He knows to pick his battles with you at your weakest. When you’ve spent the whole day in bed together, him drawing constant moans and whimpers from your lips until your mind is completely blank and your whole body is quivering.
Well. What does he think?
To be honest, after the shine of your reunion and your kiss had worn off, you had been filled with rage. Honestly, you never would have thought you would see a delinquent such as Goo Kim cower because of you.
It took weeks, months of work. Of peaks and troughs to get over the way he treated you. How he heartlessly ghosted you and tossed you aside and then reappeared in your life again as if that was fine.
Goo learnt the consequences to his actions, hated every moment, and had some eye opening lessons.
So no. You’re not mad anymore. Although-
“What if I still am?”
Your boyfriend grins at you with an insatiable hunger, ready to make you black out from pleasure.
.
.
Late nights are usual for Goo. He often comes home to find you fast asleep on his side of the bed, burying yourself in his scent like a safety blanket.
Tonight, while he undresses, the moonlight peeps through the gap in the curtains and illuminates your face.
Even seeing you lifts his spirits.
Especially tonight, as unfortunately, it also highlights your drool.
He laughs to himself, swiping it away with his hand, you stirring in your sleep when he does so.
A little gesture, that is really quite ordinary and meaningless but so desperately intimate is how the realisation comes crashing down on Goo that he is deeply in love with you.
That even as he felt his feelings blossoming, he never really managed to put the words to it until now.
How, before you, he never thought he would be someone that could fall in love but now there is no denying it.
Love is the only way to describe how he feels about you.
.
.
And another few months later-
Goo waits outside a small cafe, leaning against his eye-wateringly expensive car and fiddling with his phone.
A handsome blonde in a designer suit catches the eyes of many but he ignores them all, fixated on the mobile game.
And actually, a very happily taken man.
Knowing these pretenders would never be able to keep up with him. Not like you do.
He senses your presence before anything else, and looks up to catch you waving goodbye to your college study group.
As soon as you’re alone, you slump. The weariness of the day taking its toll on you; the demanding pace of your prestigious university course maybe being a bit too much.
Goo waits for you to spot him and it doesn’t take long. As soon your eyes meet, your face transforms, lighting up and your smile is brighter than the sun.
“Let’s go home hmm, Princess?”
.
.
“And this is the partner that I don’t hate,” Goo smirks, gesturing at you and happy with his backhanded words.
Gun doesn’t say anything, just studies you from the other side of the counter as you bag up their purchases.
“Hi,” you say, then look to your boyfriend for an introduction.
He flaps his hand in your direction, “He’s a nobody. Don’t worry about it.”
“Gun Park,” the other man says, letting the insult slide off him and extending his hand out.
This Gun is intense, matching that of your boyfriend, just in very different ways. But luckily, you may be the best person on earth to handle Goo Kim. You’re sure you can handle Gun Park too.
Not flinching from his black eyes, you hold his gaze as you reach out and shake his hand. Firm grip, brief, professional.
When they both leave, Goo blows you a kiss and Gun gives you a small nod.
You tilt your head at the dark haired man. Something about that nod feels like him approving of you.
.
.
And a lot more than a few months later-
Goo staggers in, reeking of alcohol, loud and headache-inducing.
“This is your problem now.” Gun dumps him in the doorway and leaves without a second glance.
“Huh?” Goo looks around, glasses askew, trying to place exactly where the fuck he is.
“Good night?” You ask, diverting his attention to you as a far off voice in his brain tells him this is his home.
“Y/N!” He slurs, suddenly hit with a burst of energy and throwing himself in your direction. Boy is he pleased to see you. Although, now he thinks about it, when is he not.
Goo grins, lopsided and with heart eyes, “I want to see you everyday.”
You must be cursed. Because even though Goo is an absolute nuisance when he's drunk, even more so than usual if that is possible; at the same time, his sappiness comes out in droves and you can never find it in yourself to be mad at him.
“You do,” you reply, handing over a glass of water.
“No. I want to spend all my time with you.” He frowns down at the drink that has appeared out of nowhere in his hand.
“You do.”
“No,” he pouts, on the verge of a tantrum because why on earth are you being so dense and not understanding him right now.
“I’m not dense, you’re just drunk!”
Oops. Goo giggles to himself when he sees you glaring at him. He was supposed to just think that.
“Princess,” he says, puppy dog eyes appearing after you force him to down the water in one go, “You don’t get it.”
“Tell me then.”
“I want to marry you.”
“Is that it?” You pluck the glass from his hand and replace it with another full one.
“Yes!” Goo is this close to stomping his feet. Can you please stop handing him water. That is not a reasonable response to him pouring his heart out over here.
“You tell me that all the time too.”
A frown. “I do?”
“Yes. But babe…”
“Hmm?”
“We’re already married.”
Goo looks impossibly confused until he glances down, and spots a shiny band around his ring finger. “Oh!”
He gives you another grin and your heart melts.
.
.
Goo used to think you would be an idiot marrying his high school sweetheart but turns out, he’s one and the same.

This is the future. Her future. My present. Isn't it?
The second thing the woman realised, after feeling that she had succeeded in breaking out of her water tank, lifting her soaked body off the wet floor, was where she was. The first thing? She was awake again, alive, and the world... well, it was far less destroyed than she had thought it would be.
Their plan had been set in motion. And it had worked. At least to an extent... it remained to be seen to what extent exactly. She was still only half human, her other half able to breathe in water and swim and feed off fish. She was still the woman she had seen in the mirror all that time ago.
She was still only half human, her other half a mermaid-like being. That meant she still had these weird powers that came with that. The enchanting singing - like nothing any human had ever heard - as well as the hydrokinesis and pyrokinesis. The conflict in her wasn't only on the inside. Her present self had gotten two kinds of abilities instead of one.
This meant she could evaporate the water her body was soaked in. Turn it to steam and be dry. And so she did, squeezing her hand to control the power. It was fascinating, wasn't it, how her younger self had thought this was magic. Once she was done, all of her dry from head to toe, she ran her hands through her pockets.
No, there could be no mistake. The wallet inside one of the jacket's inner pockets contained an ID card with the names Fíann Foley, which changed to Flyn Farrell as she lifted it to her face. The face that looked back at her was both hers and not hers - her hair was shorter, the wrinkles and creases had become more, and, somehow, so had the freckles. As well as the height. I suppose I am 180 cm tall. Hm. I'd remembered differently...
As she left the water tank room, only casting a wary glance behind herself while she slithered out through the half-closed door, she felt a weird sensation coming from inside her jacket. Could it be...? Fucking hell. Her mobile had made it out of the water tank just as alive as she was. They may have been serious when they said those things were fully waterproof, huh. Even though I still kind of don't buy that shit.
Not only was the phone alive - but it also had a missed voicemail. Who the fuck sends voicemails? In this day and age? And to her, of all people? Flyn frowned. Whatever it was, it was going to be crap, just crap and more crap for her to sink in. As she held her phone, she headed to the lifts and out of the building.
The walk that followed afterwards felt like it lasted forever - not that she minded; with the bad luck she was getting, Flyn would be alive for an infinite number of walks - and when she got off the subway she'd taken, she reached the town centre at last and sat down on a bench on one of the bigger streets. Time to listen to that darn voicemail. Whatever it may contain.
These are the consequences of joining Imperium Tempus. You know that. You got so invested in video games and composing music for them, that you nearly forgot both your part-time work at the aquarium and our deal, Flyn. By the time you hear this your past self will be about to die, thanks to you lowering her body temperature enough. But now you get to keep the best of her. Have fun.
Little did she know, there was a lie hidden in the message, and it would take a while to find it...

Congratulations Ash!
Your application for Katie Bell has been accepted. Katie is a character I’ve rarely given much thought, frankly, but I’ve completely fallen in love with her already. You’ve given her so much depth and involved her so closely in everything that is happening. I can’t wait to see what she gets up to!
Please look to the checklist for the next steps and reach out if you have any questions!
OUT OF CHARACTER
NAME & PRONOUNS: Ash, she/her.
TIMEZONE: PST
ACTIVITY LEVEL: I reckon I am about a six or seven out of ten. I am constantly on mobile and accessible for plotting, but prefer to do all of my replies once I am home from work and have access to a computer.
ANYTHING ELSE: I have ten plus years role-playing experience and I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity to potentially write Katie again for the first time in years. She was one of the first characters I ever wrote in the Harry Potter world and holds a very special place in my heart.
CHARACTER DETAILS
NAME: Katherine Emery Bell ( Katie Bell )
BIRTHDATE: 21 April, 1978.
DEATHDATE: 10 October, 1997 N/A, still alive and kicking.
GENDER, PRONOUNS, and SEXUALITY: Katie is a cisfemale who uses she/her pronouns. She is bisexual, as she was taught to love and embrace everyone for who they were at a young age. It doesn’t matter what they are; she only weighs who they are inside.
BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood.
HOUSE ALUMNI: Gryffindor.
OCCUPTATION: Unspeakable, Death Chamber.
FACECLAIM: Poppy Drayton, though I might want to switch if accepted / after having some time to sleep on it.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND
POSTBELLUM
Like many, Katie too has scars from the war. They are weighted far heavier than she cares to admit and she carries them with her everywhere. In the pocket of her favorite cloak, tightly wrapped around her not just for warmth, but security too; on her broomstick whenever she needs to escape from the static background noise; or to one of her best mate’s houses where she is sure to find relief at the bottom of a shared bottle of fire-whiskey.
Katie shies away from intimacy’s pervasive touch. She does not give her trust away so freely like she once did as a carefree girl. Every instinct to share a piece of herself and love others is met with restraint. These are a few of the repercussions she faces because of the damage inflicted on her. She has been to a dark place; tethered between the realms of life and death while being neither here nor there. She clawed her way back to stable ground, though there are times she questions its permanence. In fact, if anything the war has taught her everything is fleeting. Now she leaves claw marks on everything, but can’t seem to hold onto any of it.
Practically everyone she knows has been touched in some way by the war; some of their scars running far deeper than her own. She lost friends and a part of herself, but many had it off far worse. Katie tries not to linger on her own pain and psychological trauma for that reason. At the end of the day, she survived; the heart beating in her chest confirms she is alive despite sometimes feeling anything but.
Since the war came to pass five years ago ( though at times it feels like a separate lifetime ago ), Katie has channeled her experiences and emotions into molding a successful career as an Unspeakable where she works in the Death Chamber. Since her brush with death at seventeen, Katie found herself unusually fascinated with the subject matter. She spent six months hospitalized in St. Mungo’s, a majority of which she was at what felt like death’s door. She swore she did die, but that was a difficult pill for her to swallow—let alone anyone else, so she kept that secret sealed tightly under lock and key. Katie figured that was the better alternative than being labeled crazy.
It took a long time for her to cope with what occurred, and even longer to bring up the occurrence with those closest to her. Being cursed certainly had its affects; it changed who she was and what made her tick. When she returned to Hogwarts and participated in the final quidditch match of her school-career against Ravenclaw, the game did not give her the same adrenaline filled rush it once had. She unknowingly battled depression and PTSD that year struggling to hold onto all the things she loved. They no longer provided her with sustenance, but she confused these arbitrary feelings with lackluster consequences from a progressive war with what felt like no end insight.
PERSONALITY
As a girl, Katie was known for being carefree and reckless. She was an untamed spirit who had not yet learned about the world’s cruelness. She had no reason then to be the emotionally guarded woman she would become. The final years of the war forced her to grow up much sooner than she ever planned for herself. Her overly-competitive demeanor was combated by a sudden instability. Trust no longer comes as easily for her as it once did. When she was imperiused during her last year of school and subsequently cursed by the Opal Necklace, she felt like she lost a part of herself. She no longer enjoyed many of the same hobbies she once did. She questioned everything, from the motives of her friends to the intricacies of life. She was no longer left in control, but instead reeling with trust issues in the present day—the most concerning being the lack of trust she feels in herself. It is an unspoken feeling, but it looms above her like a dark cloud.
Since being cursed, Katie has been keenly inept at desensitizing and disassociating from reality whenever it doesn’t fit perfectly in the box she has crafted for it. The war left her jaded and its scars provided an unwanted resilience she transformed into armor. She has survived many battles, but even the ones she lost were never for naught. They each made her stronger—just a mere fraction of the woman she will become, but still knowingly has many lessons to learn before fully evolving. However, Katie is plagued with self-doubt. Perhaps that is what holds her back from achieving her full potential.
Katie is now far more reserved than she once was. Her desire for love and ability to share it with others has diminished since she was a child, muted by a perverted sense of drive. She has a bad habit of shutting not only the world out, but those closest to her too. It can be a lonely road at times, so she throws herself into her work with hopeless abandon. She is driven and sees every project through to the very end. Ironically though, her never-ending need to answer life’s most challenging questions is exactly what holds her back from living life to the fullest. She has a one track mind and can become so preoccupied, or short-sighted, she forgets to hold onto what is really important.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FAMILY
Katie grew up in a happy family with very relaxed core values. Her parents always demonstrated love to her and her brother, Christian, even when they weren’t the most deserving or receptive. Olivia and Rhys Bell loved each other fiercely; that was one consistent factor in Katie’s life. As the youngest Bell in the family of four, she was spoiled and fussed over more than she cares too admit. She recalls all the arguments and tiffs her and Christian got into over the years—a trait that seemed to follow the pair into adulthood. Their parents on the other hand hardly ever fought. Katie believed there must be occasions they clashed with one another, but it was evident they were far more emotionally reserved than their children. They made a point not to fight in front of them, which always raised the question of where their children’s argumentative tendencies came from.
It was important for Olivia and Rhys to make their children feel empowered starting at a young age. They wanted to instill in them a strong sense of confidence that would allow them to break through any obstacles in their way or complete whatever task they set out on. As survivors of the first wizarding wixen war, and Olivia being a muggle-born, it was imperative to them their children didn’t embody the same fear or embrace any limitations as they once did. This nurturing mindset is exactly how Katie got into flying. Her father gifted a toy broomstick to her one Christmas when she was no more than six years old. She can recall the sheer horror on her mother’s face that morning; it was evident she was not in on the surprise, otherwise there probably would have been no broom at all that year. Christian had received one a few years prior and Olivia’s excitement over the matter quickly disintegrated when he lost control and spiraled into their garden trellis. Christian didn’t fly again until his first year lessons, however his sister’s abilities came far more natural than his own.
Once Olivia realized her daughter was more agile than her first born, she quickly warmed up to the idea. After she mastered and eventually outgrew the dainty toy broomstick, it was her mom who splurged for her first trainer’s broom. Katie excitedly whipped the new broom around their property, memorizing every trace of it from the new safe haven she had discovered. Flying became an escape for her. Quidditch always brought much excitement, but flying was what truly made her feel at peace with herself. Over the years she fully mastered the skill ( while running through her fair share of broomsticks ), and Katie knew she had her parents to thank for supporting her in spite of themselves and pushing her forward every time she wanted to quit. Though her quidditch career eventually faded away, her love for flying never wavered as her unconditional love for her parents and brother never has.
Present day, Katie and her family still share a special bond. Her parents continue to support all her endeavors even if they don’t necessarily agree or understand them. At times Katie is aware there is a disconnect between them, but it is something she can’t seem to avoid. Olivia and Rhys witnessed their daughter go from a bubbly and charismatic girl to someone almost unrecognizable at times, but since the war is still so fresh for everyone it has become easier to turn the other cheek.
HISTORY
Katie always considered her life very ordinary. Her parents worked hard to ensure her and her brother had a good life. They were a close-knit family and, though they got on her nerves on occasion, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Katie recalls her childhood fondly. Olivia read books to both her children frequently, however Katie found herself to be easily distracted. Her head would wander to the sky where she would pluck shapes out of the clouds. Christian was the calm and retentive child—it was much easier for their parents to hold his attention. Katie on the other hand was a bumbling ball of energy since she was of crawling age. She would color the walls or demolish Christian’s toys if left unattended. It was much easier to hold her attention whenever baking was involved. Katie had a knack for sweets, though the thought of giving her more sugar didn’t always appeal. Still, she somehow persuaded her mum into baking cookies with her often. These were some of the best days of her childhood.
As soon as Katie was gifted her first toy broomstick, a spark ignited. Flying undoubtedly was her first love. Whenever her and Christian had a sibling squabble or he was getting on her nerves, she would run to her broomstick immediately and take flight; and when it was his time to leave for Hogwarts and she was left behind for three more years, flying became her therapy and release. It remedied the loneliness.
When it was finally time for Katie to head off to Hogwarts, her natural charisma and energetic personality really shined through in all she did. She made friends quickly and they became a forefront in her life. She fed off the energy of those around her and subsequently became a member of numerous school clubs. Joining the Gryffindor quidditch team her second year was the highlight of her entire school-career. She considered those initial years to be the best of all; her original teammates quickly became a second family to her. It was a feeling that still echoed long after their glory days on the quidditch pitch.
When Lord Voldemort returned, Katie found herself at a loss for words. She considered Harry Potter a friend and teammate. No one in her inner circle doubted him nor did she, however she did have a difficult time comprehending just what that meant. Cedric Diggory was also a friend; like many, seeing his body in the aftermath of the Tri-Wizard Tournament was Katie’s first brush with death. It was evident to the then fifteen year old that only something vile and cruel could take the life of someone like Cedric—someone with so much potential. She jumped at the opportunity to join Dumbledore’s Army for that reason. She believed in the cause and, reflecting on the pain the first war put her own parents through, Katie had to believe there was a reason she wound up here when she did.
Katie genuinely did not believe anything could be more difficult than that period of time, but her seventh year was one of the most challenging of all. Katie was not sure when the trip to Hogsmeade went awry on that beautiful fall day. There was excitement in the air despite the frigid temperature that brought the first snowfall of the season. That is one of the only memory’s Katie holds onto from that day. She later woke up in St. Mungo’s where she was told she had been for six months recovering from a fatal curse.
With a hoarse voice and fear filling her eyes, Katie asked the first healer she saw if she was dead.
The healer laughed as if she made some kind of joke. “ No honey, you’re lucky to be alive. ”
Lucky to be alive.
Except the problem was Katie didn’t feel anything, least of all alive. She spent the last six months in a foreign place, but didn’t feel nearly as lost or confused there as she did now that she was back in the earthly dimension.
The phrase continues to haunt her six years after her near-death experience. Maybe the Healer was right and she should feel lucky, but she doesn’t. Now that the war has come to pass, she is riddled with guilt. She cannot walk away from what happened to her six years ago despite making it out of the war alive. That alone should be enough reason to celebrate, but it is not. There are too many unanswered questions and Katie understands better than most who survived the war that everyone is borrowed time. She cannot unsee the place she spent six months of her life trapped in. She is desperate to understand it and even more desperate to know if the souls of her lost friends now inhabit the same space.
OOC EXPLORATION
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
This group captivated my attention immediately upon discovery. The Trio Era is what originally got me into role-playing Harry Potter and the Marauders is what kept me, so this role-play truly is the perfection combination. I have been looking for a group to join for some time now and your group has one of the freshest and most unique concepts I’ve ever seen! Plus, it is obvious the passion and care that has gone into creating this group. I am excited to potentially be a part of the journey and see where the story takes us all together.
EXTRA FOR NON-BIO CHARACTERS
CHARACTER CONTRIBUTION
Katie possesses a lot of versatility with her character. She naturally has an outgoing and charismatic personality, and is quick at adapting to her surroundings. She has always been an integral part of whatever community she is a part of—ranging from her time at Hogwarts on the quidditch team, in the dueling club, or Dumbledore’s Army; to her career beyond the castle’s walls. She has proved herself a loyal friend to many. I think her experience being cursed by the Opal Necklace makes her an imperative character because she has knowledge from that ordeal others might not be equipped with, which she has channeled into a career within the Ministry of Magic as an Unspeakable.
I headcanon that when Katie was cursed by the necklace during her seventh year, she spent a large portion of her time in St. Mungo’s unconscious. During this period she had an out of body experience where she thought she was dead. She tightly holds onto the secret that she visited what may be known to some as limbo, purgatory, or the underworld out of fear of being labelled crazy. She doesn’t dismiss her experience though; she clings to it, and it to effects every aspect of her life.
Katie’s brush with death made her obsessed with the idea of it. Since the war’s conclusion she has tried to dissect the mechanics of life and death, but had no success. Everyday feels the exact same; she is capped out with little to show for her efforts. That is, until the first of the returned makes their appearance through the veil. This ignites a new obsession in Katie all over again.
PRESENT
“ Have you heard? ” A stocky Unspeakable buzzed with excitement as he pushed passed Katie and exited the elevator lift.
“ Heard what? ” The woman quipped in his direction as she rubbed her tired eyes, but by the time she gathered her senses he was already hurrying off down the corridor. Katie shrugged her shoulders back and dismissed the interaction before continuing along in the same direction. Unusual occurrences were the norm in this part of the Ministry so she didn’t think much of it. She was already getting a late start on her day anyway so she decided to quicken her pace as she rounded the corner leading to her dual office/laboratory, where she was forced to stop abruptly when she came across a throng of other Unspeakables littering the hallway. Katie quirked a brow upon the realization everyone was huddled near the Death Chamber.
“ What is going on? ” She asked the same Unspeakable who she spotted standing nearby.
“ You don’t know? ” Emerson gaped, which annoyed Katie slightly. “ They are saying someone has returned through the veil. ”
“ What do you mean ‘returned through the veil?’ I didn’t realize we were trying to send anyone to the other-side— ”
“ No, someone no longer living returned through the veil. They came back from the dead. ”
“ Impossible, ” Katie uttered in protest, but her own near-death experience quickly replayed in her head. She was only seventeen when she swore she too briefly died, so maybe it wasn’t impossible for the dead to return after all.
“ No really, a boy was found wandering the corridors naked this morning. Creevy is what they’re calling him. ”
Katie stood silent for a moment as she processed what she had just been informed. “ Someone came back to life? Through the veil? ” The witch repeated as her dark eyes swirled with sudden intensity. Emerson merely nodded. “ I sure picked a hell of a day to be late. ” She concluded completely gobsmacked.
“ You won’t make that mistake again, ” Emerson chuckled before disappearing off into the crowd to try and sneak a closer look.
And he was right. From that day forward, Katie was never late again. She always put her best foot forward when it came to her career, but the stakes suddenly felt like they had been raised even higher upon the departed’s return. The one thing she now knows for certain is that this might be the only opportunity she has to find answers to the questions that have been tormenting her for the last six years—and she doesn’t plan on letting this moment pass her by like she did unwittingly the last one.

IN CHARACTER
Character | Lady Macbeth, Lucrezia Eleonora Falco nee Capuccio - I’d like to change her face to Summer Bishil pretty please!
What drew you to this character? | I have always held a soft spot for Lady Macbeth. Why are the traits that would be seen as positive, almost heroic, in a man the ones that doom her in the end? Why is she punished for her ambition and cleverness, the willingness to do whatever it takes to get ahead? Lucrezia to me answers the question of what if Lady Macbeth wasn’t condemned and drowned in guilt, what if she was able to remain as much of a force to be reckoned with throughout the whole play, not just the first two acts. Strength, competence, and ambition have far too often been seen as faults in women - in Lucrezia they are her crowning glory. By no means does that make her a good person, it makes her all the more interesting and dynamic. I also truly love that there is no deep violent or horrible reason that she is the way that she is. No tragic villain origin story. It was a deliberate choice, one that I feel she made freely and intentionally, to give into the longing for something more that the rose colored world she was born into. Something interesting and dark, to explore the innate cruelty that anyone can be capable of. I want to play with the darkness and with the idea that a girl could be given everything one could possibly want and still demand more.
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
Give my rage back to me, I know how to hold it - Men have always sought to own pretty things, and he is no different. Til death do us part, you said with more than a little irony. Who’s death is still uncertain. Your husband wanted you because you were just out of reach, all poison laced smiles and velvet rage in a pleasing package. He held such promise in those days, made the game almost interesting enough for you to want to see it out to the end. And now that he owns you, slipped that diamond shackle on your finger and tattooed his name on your soul, did he really expect you to be happy one step behind him? You are never happy, you force his name higher and farther than he could even dream. But when you plunged your hand into his chest, the organ you pulled out was feeble and pathetic, not nearly strong enough to fill the emptiness inside your own ribs. You are a creature of rage, he knew what he was getting into. His heart did not satisfy your hunger, in fact it only made you all the more starved. You will taste every heart in Verona if you have to, and he has no one to blame but himself.
[ I love a twisty and toxic relationship! Mikael did not gave her a taste for blood and destruction, but he increased her lust and refined her palate. Lucrezia wants to play with her food and conquests, twisting the knife deeper and deeper until their heart slips freely into her stained hands. Rage is her tool and I want to explore her being held back and fighting against her husband or anyone who tries to tame and control her. I also want to see the consequences of reaching too far or biting into a heart that is perhaps more poisonous than her own ]
All that hard, glossy armor - You watch them call her names you yourself wear like badges of honor and see her flinch at every verbal dagger. You are not one to care for other people, you never have. Perhaps you see yourself in her, or what you might have become if you did not learn early to love the darkness for what it was, not what you wished it to be. You crafted your armor, lovingly cultivated this reputation into a weapon. You attack first, and if they are dumb enough to hit back they find anger and armor all the way down. She needs your help, a decision that surprises even you. Maybe you are bored, and think it might be interesting to try and create someone for once instead of destroying. You will teach her to take their venomous barbs and learn to love the sting until she has built up her own armor. And what if, in the middle of this, she discovers a tiny crack in yours?
[ Gals helping gals we love to see it! This is an opportunity to explore Lucrezia’s armor and reputation - how she built it and what might threaten it. I want to play out what happens when someone finds a chink in hers - originally based on the Delilah connection, but could work for anyone who can get close enough. The inner turmoil of her trying not to care then realizing that she does and dealing with the repercussions of this is something I definitely want to explore! Give her a weakness, or someone else to see past what she projects and tries to be, maybe they can use this to hurt her or maybe they actually care. I want to test the strength of all that hard, glossy armor. ]
Then why does it feel like I’m losing my mind? - Madness sings from the blood of every woman, your mother once said, imploring you to resist its call. Can there be such a thing as too much love? Too much attention and coddling? Maybe you learned to love the cruelty and darkness just to spite them. They obsessed over the porcelain doll they thought you were, smothering and controlling and loving all too much. You learned to crave the thrill of chaos, the high that came from taking this love and holding it over their heads like a whip. And they made it so delightfully easy, tracing out the lines so clearly they were practically begging you to cross and smudge them. Because despite all that they tried to teach, all the loving words and sickly sweet affection, you knew you could never be enough. Even if you did exactly what they asked, dampened down the parts of you that were dark and interesting, resisted madness and her pretty call; you would never be enough. Perfection is utterly unattainable, to strive for it is a type of madness itself. If you are going to miss the mark, it might as well be deliberate and enjoyable. But guilt is a ghost who has followed you throughout your life, singing her own sort of haunting refrain. You tried to cut that part of you away and were mostly successful. She still finds you in quiet moments, crashing in with an alien emotion, methodically clawing away at that armor. You will not allow this imagined weakness to threaten everything you have built and so you double down on your devotion, cutting away that traitorous part of your mind again and again until maybe there is nothing left.
[ Guilt and madness and paying the price for ambition are huge parts of Lady Macbeth’s play arc and I want to explore Lucrezia fighting against these. “Madness” and “losing ones mind” seem to be the end, the punishment given for reaching too far. But what if they are a choice one makes to get there? Another tool like beauty and sex used to get ahead. I want to play with Lucrezia balancing right on that line between control and the loss of it. Likely her own actions and weaknesses will lead to some sort of confrontation, maybe an internal battle that leaks out to threaten her plans and ambitions. Is the idea of madness a choice one can make or simply the result of other choices? I want to see what happens when she is forced to deal with the consequences of her actions and choices, a reckoning for her rage. ]
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Yes probably but I am fairly attached to her so I’d like to have plenty of time to play first. I don’t really want her to meet the same end as her literary namesake, ie if Lucrezia is to die, I would like it to not be by her own hand.
IN DEPTH
Please choose between the interview or the para sample (or both, if you like!)
In-Character Interview: The following questions must be answered in-character, and in para form (quotations, actions written out if applicable, etc). There is no minimum or maximum limit for your response - simply answer as you would if you were playing the character.
What is your favorite place in Verona?
“Twelfth Night Museum in the early morning,” she responded without hesitating, the truth flowing almost as easily as a lie. “I like the stillness and the silence, there’s a sense of peace that is hard to find elsewhere.” At this Lucrezia smirked at her questioner, peace was rare in such a tumultuous city. And for those who knew her well as an agent of controlled chaos (and even those who only knew of her), even the word peace sounded unnatural on those red lips. It was meant to be an offhanded question by some eager tourist looking for the locals perspective - ( Note: since when did she give off the approachable ‘ask-me-for-recommendations’ vibe? Lucrezia needed another espresso and quickly ) - but it lingered even after he was long gone. It wasn’t peace, she decided, there had always been a bit of unease in the empty museum, like she was intruding on a sacred crypt for the gods. Those moments in the early mornings seemed to exist outside of the normal confines of time and space, Lucrezia could walk through all ages at the same time. She almost expected to see the old masters adding a final touch while the elements whether away details on a nearby marble bust. Maybe that was why she loved it so much, a place both haunted by the weight of history and expectations while utterly, achingly empty. The museum held some sort contradictions as Lucrezia herself, and perhaps she wanted to co-exist just as beautifully.
What does your typical day look like?
“I certainly hope there isn’t a ‘typical day’, that would be so boring,” she resisted rolling her eyes, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting something different is a type of madness, is it not? So I would hope to never be typical.” Still, the questions seemed to have been asked in good faith, so Lucrezia sighed a bit dramatically and continued. “I guess I have to wake up every day, sometimes early sometimes late - it depends.” She had never been good at sleeping well, the task of quieting her own mind daunting but not nearly as exhausting as she wished. “And then I go to work. Or I go to the museum, I always make sure to find time to be alone and surrounded by beauty - art, music, places, maybe another person.” Her smirk was laced with honey but her eyes flashed in a warning. “Work is never boring, there is always something new.” Lucrezia did not expand on this, her companion did not need all the details regardless of how she longed to brag. Because she was very good at her job and thought that was something she should be praised for. Charm was second nature, she was expert at the delicate blending of flattery and threats. More than that - it was a game, the give and take of honeyed words balanced with a sudden shift to cold cruelty. And Lucrezia loved to win. “And then I come home to my adoring husband who loves to take me out.”
What has been your biggest mistake thus far? (Tw self harm kinda)
Lucrezia laughed harshly, “Getting married at eighteen” She spun that huge diamond around her finger, a nervous habit, feeling the bite of the gem in the well worn callous on her palm. She loved the ring, she liked the sharp edge. The pain kept her grounded, reminded her of the goal. She would sometimes count - one turn for every year with him. Ten to right, then ten more to the left, and she was back smile in place, momentary lapse in control gone. Mikael served a purpose, she knew this, even that young she wasn’t so stupid as to throw her life away on something as meaningless as infatuation that could be mistaken for love. His name gave her access, status her father’s could not. And he so prettily sank to his knees for her, feeding into that innate desire for power - her driving force. The strangest part? She’d made the initial mistake of showing too much, of letting him see too much of who she was, the rage and cruelty and force. And instead of running, instead of longing for the pretty smile and charming mask - he saw her for who she was, and wanted her even more for it. Lucrezia looked down at her hands, the ring still twisting - eight, nine, ten - and then back up at the questioner. “I just mean I was too young, we should have waited a bit more.”
What has been the most difficult task asked of you?
“Oh, I don’t know,” she waved an errant hand, as if to dismiss the question. “Probably some negotiation with a particularly horrible client. I am sure it was difficult and tiresome, but I persisted and won, naturally.” A lie, they surely knew that it was, but she wasn’t about to attempt to unpack the particular traumas of a picture perfect childhood. Because the most difficult task had always been the first one asked of her, the most spectacular failure of her life. Little Lucrezia Capuccio with her chocolate curls and wild gaze tasked with lessening herself, carving out anything interesting, shrinking and molding herself to fit into their expectations - the porcelain doll daughter they thought they deserved. She was a creature of rage, even then. And when they begged her to stop, to peel away parts of her self to please them - Lucrezia set fire to anything good and pure that might have remained inside her. They had it wrong, though, when they pleaded for her to be their little angel. Angels had always been vengeful, violent spirits - sent by God to punish, to kill, to make an example. There is nothing soft, simpering, or good about a creature who’s wings have always been dipped in blood.
What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?
“War seems like a bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think?” She took a sip of her drink, “it is not so far reaching and tragic as all that.” She knew her side, had chosen carefully. Mikael had been her way in, but she’d long ago outranked him. But she had never had time for such dualities as black and white, good and evil; the battle-lines were far messier than the poets would have you believe. And that was the best part about choosing, she wasn’t bound to a side with anything as weighty and meaningful as blood or history. Lucrezia chose, and she would continue to chose - the next right thing, the next fortuitous position. One could only ever truly be loyal to oneself, any other pledge would alway eventually become a lie. “This situation,” she chose this word carefully, “provides opportunity for those who are able and willing to take it. We all want the same thing, right? What is best for those we love and our dear, fair Verona.”
In-Character Para Sample: Again, write as much or as little as you need to get your interpretation across.
(Tw mention of violence, tw blood)
On her wedding night, the newly minted Mrs. Mikael Falco considered killing her husband.
There wasn’t any particular reason, it was just the fact that she could. She wasn’t unfamiliar with violence, having dipped her toe in those depths more than once, but the particular sin of murdering one’s husband called out like a deliciously dramatic turn of events. Lucrezia thought she might make an excellent widow, she’d perfected false tears that still left her beautiful long ago. She could play vengeful, demanding the city run red with the blood of her husband’s killer. It could be a nice spark, instigating more chaos and violence between factions, an opportunity to climb even higher, not to mention how entertaining it would be to watch.
He looked so peaceful sleeping like this. Lucrezia watched the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest with every breath. She felt a sudden desire to touch him, to trail her fingers lightly along the outlines of his muscles, to trace the marks her nails had left earlier and then to press down harder and harder until he awoke and forced her to stop. Instead she grabbed the glass of wine from the bedside table, cradling it in both her hands to take a too large sip. Some heavy red, she remembered, not her favorite. Surely he would have learned her preferences by now, beyond the exquisite things his hands and mouth could do to her body. Then again, she might not have ever told him what wine she liked. Not that ignorance was an excuse she would accept.
Was being served the wrong type of wine offense enough to warrant the death of one’s husband? Asking for a friend.
Lucrezia took another sip of the disappointing wine and idly wondered if he’d ever thought the same of her. She wasn’t afraid of him, he wouldn’t have the balls to go through with it he was far too devoted - something she’d made certain of before saying yes. It was the headiest type of high to watch him carve it out himself and willingly place his protesting heart in her hands. She often tried to replicate that initial thrill and occasionally she got close, but never quite the same heights. Taking his life would surely do it, an incredible rush buzzing across her skin if she were to actually stain it with his blood. But it would be just as short lived as the last.
Since she was indulging this little fantasy, she might as well consider the details - she was nothing if not a very thorough planner. It wouldn’t be with a gun, the weight and heft of the weapon always felt wrong in her hand. And that was such a clinical, distanced way to harm. Lucrezia preferred a knife. Their intimacy had always teetered just on the edge of violence, he might not even realize her intentions until it was too late. And maybe, she let her self think for a fraction of a second, it was how he wanted to go. Mikael knew her better than anyone else, he saw her for exactly what she was and loved her anyway. It was almost frightening.
Fear and guilt are sisters - or so Shirley Jackson told her.
She finished the wine and reached over to place the glass on the table. Her husband stirred, his fingers twisting in her dark hair and Lucrezia let herself be pulled back into his arms.
“What are you thinking?” Even his half asleep whisper sent a spark of something down her spine and she smiled that arcane, cruel smile she knew drove him mad.
“I was wondering if I could be strong enough to kill you if I needed to.” Her honestly startled her, something about him caused intimacy and vulnerability. Or maybe she’d had too much to drink. He laughed then moved swiftly, rolling over on top of her while pinning both her wrists above her head with just one of his hands. The other gently caressed the side of her face and she met his burning gaze, wondering if her own eyes looked empty. He did not ask if she’d decided. She didn’t know if he thought she was joking.
He kissed her, hard, biting down on her bottom lip until she tasted her own blood and let out a gasp of desire. No, Lucrezia thought, I don’t think I could kill him. She reasoned that she would never be able to top that power rush, that he could still prove useful and the sex was excellent so best to keep him around. But really, she would be lost without his devotion, his obsessive love.
The gods only die when there is no one left to worship their names.

Wicked Game: Part II - No One Could Save Me But You (Ethan Hunt/OC)
Tumblr media
Summary: You can't trust anybody these days, that's what they tell us. They tell us that the IMF are trouble; but, then again, aren't we all? Stuck in rut, hoping our darkest fears won't bubble to the surface. In all my years, I never expected my life to take such a drastic turn; then again, life is such a wicked game and only the brave can play.
Word Count: 2,759
Pairing: Ethan Hunt/OC (Slow Burn)
These lovelies - @evangingtherealm & @ponyboys-sunsets - asked to be tagged.
A/N: Hello everyone; back again, this time with another chapter (surprising, I know); but I'm so inspired at the moment, and this story is the cause. Anyway, enough rambling, please enjoy this chapter.
The last thing she saw before blacking-out; was a pair of piercing green-eyes.
Audrey awoke with a gasp; her breath back in short gasps, the sound a constant wheeze. Her lungs burned as she began to cough; spluttering about. Once she had calmed, Audrey's eyes darted around the room she currently lay within. It was dull and drab; a single table next to the open-window, however, the smell of destruction still lingered in the air. She glanced down at her bed and closed her eyes once more; remembering the events that had just taken place. Michael was dead. The Kremlin was gone; this surely wouldn't have gone down well back at Langley. She could imagine Hunley now, pacing about, shouting orders at any pour soul that would listen.
Where in the world was she?
Was Michael alright, if not, was he still alive?
Audrey shivered involuntarily; trying to wish the dark, almost depressing thoughts away. She groaned loudly, feeling a dull pain spread through her body; the impact of the fall, she quickly presumed. Closing her eyes once more, Audrey decided that sleep would probably help; however, this didn't last for too long. A loud-crash caused Audrey to re-open her eyes; she focused her attention upon the noise, and the intruder.
A man stood in the doorway, the hospital gown he wore appeared to be hanging off his sculpted, yet lean figure. He frantically ventured further into the room; his brown hair beginning to fall over his face. As he did enter, however, Audrey froze; she recognized this man, and his piercing green-eyes. She sat up further in the bed, watching the man close the door behind him and stagger over to Audrey's bed. The pair watching each other, both with the same lucid fascination.
"It's-It's you." She stammered, still in shock. "You saved me, how-?"
The man leaned against the bed, resting his body and groaned tiredly; but made sure to keep his gaze upon Audrey.
"What's your name?" Audrey tried cautiously.
"Ethan Hunt." He replied nonchalantly.
Ethan Hunt. Of course, Audrey knew the name; she'd be stupid not to. He was infamous around the CIA, most of the operatives that worked amongst them hated him; they hated the way he did things, how he would make all the agents looked bad. Audrey often thought that Ethan was more of a hero, then a villain; but she dare not share these thoughts, as the consequences would be awful.
Pushing the covers away from her and swinging her legs off the bed, Audrey stood, albeit shakily. She reached for her clothes; which sat on the table by the window. Ethan watched her do this. He moved to stand, occasionally glancing at the door; knowing the Russian Police would be here any second.
"What's your name?" Ethan countered carefully.
"Audrey, Audrey Dunn." She replied quietly.
At the word 'Dunn', Ethan stood straighter; standing to his full height. He began to stretch out his limbs, still maintaining his watch of the hallway outside. Ethan smiled at Audrey, albeit his face a little strained. He then, to give his new acquaintance a sliver of privacy, turned away; opting to stare at the door. Audrey noticed this and smirked, at least he was a gentleman.
"Well then, Audrey, Audrey Dunn; it's nice to finally meet you."
Audrey's eyebrows shot up in surprise; how did Ethan Hunt know about her? She was often one to keep a low profile, realizing that in times like these, it usually worked in her favour. Removing the drab-hospital gown and shrugging on her jeans, Audrey looked around; searching for her shirt. Spotting it on the chair, she grasped it quickly and slid it over her head; wincing as it brushed over her stomach-bruises. Audrey glanced in Ethan's direction and smirked, watching as the Agent fidgeted, anxiously peering through the window.
"You can turn around now." She offered softly.
Ethan spun on his bare-heels, staring at the now fully-clothed Audrey; he noticed the way she held herself, and for someone who had just been covered in the Kremlin, was remarkable. But, before he could admire the blonde any-more, a loud rumble echoed from outside the room; although not another Explosion, it was something similar. Russian Police. Audrey looked over with an alarmed expression; staring at Ethan cautiously. The man caught Audrey's gaze and grimaced; she hadn't any need to ask, Ethan knew what she was thinking.
"That's the Russian Police." He explained, his tone rushed.
"Right, I see." Audrey returned, walking closer to Ethan and peering out of the small-cubbyhole. "And I take it they're after you?"
Nodding, Ethan moved to stand alongside Audrey; watching as the loud-officers neared the room. They were currently checking each room, un-satisfied that they hadn't found Ethan. As Ethan continued to stare, Audrey pushed herself away from the door and started to pull on her once-pristine, white Converse. She tutted, rubbing at the blood; before tying the laces and standing back up. Audrey could hear the shouts grow closer; she knew that Ethan didn't have much time. Rushing over to the open window, Audrey leaned out of it and relished in the cold, almost harsh wind that blew onto her face. She took a deep breath and turned back towards Ethan.
Deep in her mind, she could hear her co-worker's now; they'd call her a traitor for helping Hunt, if she did, that is. Audrey would be shamed, probably kicked out of the CIA; Hunley turning a blind-eye and casting her out onto the streets. Nevertheless, this didn't deter Audrey from her next-few steps; she had made her mind up. Audrey stole one last glance out of the window, before racing over to Ethan and seizing his hospital-gown; quickly dragging him over to the open-window. She caught Ethan staring at her, his green-eyes full of curiosity. This caused Audrey to roll her eyes in return.
"Look-" She began hurriedly. "You saved me earlier, therefore, it's my turn to return the favour."
Ethan's hand clasped around Audrey's arm; watching with a concerned expression.
"I couldn't allow you to do that." He responded softly.
BANG, BANG, BANG
The pair simultaneously turned to face the door; just as the Russian Police continued their tirade. They were closing in. Audrey placed her hand a-top of Ethan's; the latter's heading shooting up, clearly-alarmed.
"I'm not giving you a choice Mr Hunt. You saved me, therefore, this is me saving you." She reiterated sternly; ensuring that her word was final.
Ethan watched her for a handful of seconds, hoping to find a source of hesitation in the younger-woman's eyes; there was none. He sighed and gave her a small smile, which Audrey gladly returned. Behind them, the door opened with an almighty-crash; the Police tumbling into the room. However, by the time the Police had entered the room, Audrey and Ethan had already ascended onto the window ledge.
The couple stood, side-by-side, teetering over the edge; Ethan appearing much shakier than before, Audrey, on the other-hand, was trying her hardest not to glance down. Through her sudden rush of adrenaline, she'd failed to remember that she occasionally suffered from vertigo. It hadn't looked too high from inside; oh, how she hated to be wrong. She leaned back and gulped, tuning back to stare at Ethan and the Police officer, who was casually-leaning out of the window; almost as if he was taunting the runaways. He lit a cigarette and smirked, smoking the item with ease.
"Not a good idea."
Ethan bobbed his head, considering the Officer's words; however, without the Officer noticing, had taken Audrey's hand in his.
"It seemed like one a minute ago." He replied, almost breathless.
The Officer smirked, he-too considering the others words, before motioning - with his finger - for the pair to come back into the room. Ethan began to shift along ledge. Audrey, although confused, peeked at Ethan and shifted along, following his lead. The pair stopped, hovering over a large-dustbin; the officer monitoring, the cigarette still in hand. From the street down-below, the sound of an engine could be heard; Audrey recognized it as a car and by the sounds of things, it wasn't far away. She glanced down; noticing that van was starting to move down the street. What she failed to note, however, was Ethan dropping her hand and removing his belt.
"Grab onto me." Ethan commanded in a whisper.
"What?"
"Just do it." He commanded again, this time through gritted teeth.
Doing as she was told, Audrey wrapped her arms around Ethan, however; before she could registrar what was happening, Ethan jumped from the ledge and, with his belt hooked onto the telephone-wire, slid down and onto the top of the van. Although, Ethan missed the van, Audrey landed on top; she groaned loudly, but sat up and hurried off the van. She knelled next to Ethan, helping him to his feet; the pair shooting a quick glance to the window they had escaped from. The police officer still-stood, gaping at Ethan; cigarette long forgotten about. As the Officer started off and away from the window, Ethan grasped onto Audrey's hand; the pair running off in the safest direction.
Eventually, Audrey and Ethan had found safety (of sorts); along the way, Ethan had obtained a jacket and a pair of shoes, rendering him invisible to those in pursuit. They approached a cafe, where Ethan quickly swiped a mobile-phone; and led Audrey through the back-streets of Moscow. She watched as he placed the phone to his ear. So, this is what it's like to be an IMF agent then, she thought with a smirk.
"SAT 20. Agent 82-Delta-Echo requesting immediate Evac. Rendezvous Alpha 113." Ethan spoke firmly into the device.
Ethan, showing little-sign of emotion, appeared satisfied with the call and as they crossed onto another street, threw the phone into the nearest drain. Audrey moved closer to Ethan; but only to dodge on-coming pedestrians.
"What happens next?" She inquired quietly.
Stopping still, Ethan grasped Audrey's arm - in the same place as before - and stared deep into her eyes.
"This is your last chance, Audrey; once you come with me, that's it. You could walk away now and I wouldn't think any-less of you." He said softly.
Similar to her previous actions, the blonde grasped Ethan's hand; squeezing it reassuringly.
"I'm here to stay; all of my chances flew away the minute I helped you out of that window." Audrey's tone was equally as soft.
They shared a small-smile, before Ethan began to lead her down the road once more. He glanced down at her, as they crossed into another back-street.
"There's just something I have to do first."
Audrey wished that she was back in bed; she wished that the Kremlin was still in one-piece. At least then, Audrey knew she would be safe; however, safe was not the phrase she'd use right-now. Ethan seemed a lovely-man; but she sure-was not in the mood for another attack.
Gasping for breath; Audrey swam to the surface of the water, glancing around, searching for Ethan. When she couldn't locate him, her breathing quickened; surely he was still alive? There was no she was leaving without him; they'd made it this far. Audrey embarked further through the water; searching, occasionally going-under but finding it rather difficult. Although, her prayers were suddenly answered; as, from behind, a male-gasp was audible. She swam around, noticing that Ethan was now-above water; another man, whom she vaguely-recognized, swimming beside him.
"Ethan!" She called, waving her arm. "Ethan! Over here!"
Ethan craned his neck, breathing a sigh-of relief as he spotted Audrey; floating, almost gracefully, besides the sunken car. The men swam towards her; Ethan quickly scanning the blonde for any major injuries; once again, he sighed, relieved. The trio quickly swam out of the water; away from the prying eyes of the bridge above. Once out of the water, Audrey grimaced; feeling the water soak into her Converse; she was most certainly throwing-these away. Ethan leading, the trio continued through the city; keeping a low profile. Audrey and, the analyst, William, walked side-by side; Ethan up ahead, occasionally turning to check on Audrey. William glanced down at Audrey; he recognized her from somewhere. She caught his gaze and smirked, crossing her arms, raising a sarcastic brow.
"Everything alright, William?" She questioned.
William, cheeks red, coughed awkwardly and averted his eyes.
"Perfect, thank you." He replied, albeit awkwardly. William coughed again. "So, are you an IMF Agent too?"
Ethan, also curious, glanced back; but Audrey simply shook her head, wet, blonde curls flying about. She chuckled quietly; the question causing her a great-amount of amusement.
"I'm a translator." She returned proudly; her job, up until now, had caused her much-joy.
Both Ethan and William appeared surprised; the former the most, he hadn't expected that. From what Benji had told him, he'd imagined Audrey to be an Agent of some form; she certainly had the bravery to be one. The team approached a set of train-tracks; Ethan halting the group.
"We're here."
Find the green-car.
Find the green-car.
Find the green-
"It's here!"
The train moved quickly; Ethan struggled to log-back into the IMF's system, the carriage moving-quicker than need-be. Beside him, Audrey and William waited for the signal, all the while trying to avoid obstacles heading their way. As Ethan was accepted, the carriage door opened. William was the first to enter onto the train. Once on, he held his hand out for Audrey; she gladly accepted it and leaped after him. That just left Ethan. Audrey sat back and watched as Ethan jumped on, landing inside with a loud THUD. Looking around, Audrey let out a breathless chuckle.
"Well, what a day this has been."
William groaned, lying back; where-as Ethan caught Audrey's gaze and smirked; their silence, however, was ruined by the sound of rustling. Audrey and Ethan jumped to their feet, ready to intercept the intruders; but Ethan visibly relaxed at the sight of his team. Audrey, however, frowned; focusing upon one-person in particular.
"BENJI?"
Benji lowered his weapon; mostly out of shock. Were his eyes deceiving him, or was his baby-sister really stood before him? He stood, mouth hanging open.
"Audrey?"
Without a moments hesitation, Audrey rushed into her brothers arms; causing him to drop his weapon and wrap his arms around her. The others watched on with a mixture of surprise and confusion; but this all twisted to amusement, as Audrey removed herself from the hug and quickly slapped her brother. Benji held his face, although couldn't find it in him to be angry; he deserved this. Audrey grimaced and bit down on her lip.
"Sorry Benji, but you deserved that. I've been so worried about you." She ranted calmly.
Benji nodded, but soon wore a confused expression of his own.
"Hang on a moment, what the hell are you doing in Moscow?"
Ethan and Audrey shared a small-glance; Benji not catching it, but appearing concerned none-the less. The former moved around the the large-table in the center, next to a fierce-looking woman. Audrey sighed, knowing that her plight wasn't worth the time; they had bigger-problems.
"Another story for another time, we've got work to-do."
Seemingly accepting his sisters words, Benji followed Audrey to the table; William doing the same. They all turned their attention towards Ethan; who glanced around, wearing a grim expression.
"The Secretary is dead."

June 2018 Featured Creator
What is a Featured Creator?
Write Way Studio’s “Featured Creator” segment is my way of showing appreciation for the creators of the world.  Creative outlets are limitless, because there is no end to human imagination.  Every month shows the succeeding featured creator.  If you would like to be a part of this collaborative project, contact me at [email protected]!
My ninth guest creator is the artist known as PonPox!
Introduction
Known on the Internet by their username PonPox, they also go by Pon!  They are twenty-four years old with their birthday landing on March 16th.  Their astrological sign is the Pisces, better known as the twin fishes!  They have earned a bachelor’s degree in video game design with a focus on 3D art.  At the moment, they are part of an internship with a mobile game company as a 3D/2D artist for a vocational university.
Although they are a 2D artist at heart with both traditional and digital media, PonPox also works with 3D.  They create fan-art for a variety of fan-doms they are currently interested in.  When they have spare time, they adore experimenting with digital art.  With the digital come the opportunities with colored pieces and more advanced work.  In comparison to traditional work, digital has become so much easier because of Ctrl+Z and able to freely move pieces around as desired.  Programs like Photoshop and SAI help them practice even more with all artistic elements and experimentations.
However, because of their current schedule, most of their creative drawing time occurs on their commute to and from work, an estimated three hours per weekday, and lunch breaks.  In concerns to the consequence of the impending time crunch, they elaborated that their artwork was bits of “messy sketches, cleaner lead drawings and sometimes inked pieces.”  The minimum of their supplies are sketchbooks, mechanical pencil, and an eraser.  At the moment, they possess an interest in coloring, so they also bring along color pencils in order to satisfy the urge.
The most common subject matter for them is fan-art.  Original pieces are a close second, particularly folklore and fantasy creatures.  Fauns, harpies, centaurs and Scandinavian-styled trolls name only a few.  They like to place them into a modern setting with creative narratives attached.  The chronicles even develop into full blown backstories during their commutes.  The ideas may even develop into something more in the future.  But right now?  They are just ramblings to them.
What Sparked the Creator Passion?
How It All Started
They started drawing around the same time as everyone else would, in kindergarten.  The only difference is that they did not want to stop.  They admitted that a huge artistic milestone for them had been the introduction of manga and anime into their lives.  They were about nine or ten when they first started reading manga.  They later would try to mimic the manga styles they encountered.
All about the Art
The Epiphany
PonPox recalled some sort of news coverage a couple years after they had been introduced to the world of manga.  The topic of discussion?  “How to draw manga” tutorials, of all things!  They then remembered paying very close attention to the instructions the news provided.  A new development occurred to them from the experience that never registered before, that “you can learn techniques to draw better.”
Their parents later gifted them with a “how to draw manga” book that actually managed to do a decent job in jumpstarting their journey as an artist.  They learned so much in a short time as well as lucked out with the book being one of the decent tutorial texts.  It provided a bit of everything for artists, from color wheels, basic anatomy, and even shading rules.  It even shared multiple drawing styles and artists, revealing how manga is just one kind of style that happened to originate in Japan.
Manga and Anime
Manga and anime continue to be PonPox’s biggest inspirations.  It’s the main reason they started to focus on their art more versus simply aimlessly drawing.  However, a clarification is in order:  they are not a manga artist.  The term implies that the artist is creating manga in Japan and they definitely do not like being labeled with that assumption.
Experimentation
Fantasy and folklore creatures interest them since the beings can freely break away from the norm.  People-watching heightens their creativity and curiosity.  Humans fascinate them so, just like the creatures.  They began to tinker with various body modifications, from body hair, wrinkles, body fat, muscles and body types as a whole.  Part of the experimenting is due to them trying to escape from the typical anime/manga body imagery.  For the mythical creatures, they feel that “you can bend the rules more . . . [since] their beauty standards and physiques can be very different than what humans are used to.”
Future Projects
At the moment, there is no definite answer.  PonPox does know, however, that they will never stop drawing.  They sometimes works with their girlfriend on comics of an AU (alternate universe) for the character Leorio from the anime series Hunter x Hunter on a side-blog.  They are always creating more art for their blog, though!
There may be the possibility of prints, keychains, and other products (that is the hope anyway).  They are simply creating art and completing commissions at the present time.
Where to Find You? Support You?
PonPox is available on the Interwebs, from looking at their artwork to business purposes.  To satisfy your curiosity, look at the information provided below!
Two sides of Tumblr house their art!
Main Art Blog
Side-Blog (that also focuses on art)

Last Tidbits
As crazy as it may sound, PonPox had no clue narwhals were real animals!  Somewhere they heard about narwals being the unicorns of the sea and it just stuck.  It wasn’t until they were about thirteen or fourteen that they stumbled upon a photograph of one.  It completely blew their mind!  To this day, they still think narwhals are “some of the most magical creatures out there.”

To PonPox,
Even though we could not work on this as much as I would like, I hope you enjoyed the collaboration as much as I did!  I know that it was hard to consistently connect for the collaboration, especially when some unavoidable occurrences happened on my end and you having work as well.  It was definitely not easy and I cannot apologize enough for my lack of professionalism when the situations continued to arise.  It also provided me with a painful reminder of the unfortunate reality my technology presents me (since I had to rig it so much just so we could work on the rough drafts – long story!)
We beat the odds!  This finished product you’re reading right now is proof of that!
I appreciate this opportunity you gave me and hope we can work together again soon!  As crazy as it may sound, you are the first person on Tumblr I have actually asked to work with me (and answered back!)  I love your unique art style and quirky personality.  You are one of the people I look up to, especially when it comes to art.  Until next time, I wish you the best of luck!
Sincerely,
Jasmine Love

Your brain on video games | Daphne Bavelier

Your brain on video games | Daphne Bavelier
Tumblr media
Translator: Joseph Geni Reviewer: Morton Bast i am a brain scientist, and as a brain scientist, i am without a doubt fascinated by how the brain learns, and i’m above all fascinated by a likelihood of making our brains smarter, better and faster. That is in this context i will tell you about video games. When we say video games, most of you suppose about kids. It’s real. Ninety percentage of kids do play video video games. But let’s be frank. When the children are in bed, who is in entrance of the PlayStation? Most of you. The usual age of a gamer is 33 years historic, no longer eight years historic, and actually, if we seem on the projected demographics of video game play, the online game avid gamers of day after today are older adults. (Laughter) So video is pervasive in the course of our society. It is evidently here to remain. It has an robust influence on our day-to-day life. Recall these facts launched by way of Activision. After one month of free up of the game "name Of responsibility: Black Ops," it had been played for sixty eight,000 years global, proper? Would any of you bitch if this was the case about doing linear algebra? So what we’re asking in the lab is, how will we leverage that power? Now I want to step again a little.I do know most of you may have had the experience of coming back house and discovering your youngsters taking part in a lot of these video games. (capturing noises) the secret is to get after your enemy zombie dangerous guys earlier than they get to you, proper? And i am just about definite most of you’ve got thought, "Oh, come on, can not you do anything more clever than taking pictures at zombies?" i’d such as you to place this style of knee-jerk reaction in the context of what you may have concept in case you had found your woman enjoying sudoku or your boy reading Shakespeare.Correct? Most parents would in finding that high-quality. Good, i am not going to let you know that enjoying video games days in and days out is absolutely excellent in your health. It is no longer, and binging is never just right. But i will argue that in affordable doses, actually the very sport I confirmed you on the starting, those motion-packed shooter video games have particularly robust effects and constructive effects on many one-of-a-kind points of our habits. There’s not one week that goes without some essential headlines in the media about whether video games are just right or dangerous for you, right? You’re all bombarded with that.I would like to put this type of Friday night bar dialogue apart and get you to sincerely step into the lab. What we do in the lab is truly measure directly, in a quantitative fashion, what’s the have an impact on of video games on the mind. And so i will take a few examples from our work. One first announcing that i’m definite you all have heard is the fact that an excessive amount of screen time makes your eyesight worse. That is a announcement about imaginative and prescient. There could also be vision scientists among you. We in reality comprehend scan that declaration. We can step into the lab and measure how good your vision is. Well, bet what? Persons that don’t play a number of action games, that don’t truely spend plenty of time in front of screens, have usual, or what we call corrective-to-common vision. That is ok. The problem is what happens with these guys that truly indulge into playing video games like 5 hours per week, 10 hours per week, 15 hours per week.By that declaration, their vision will have to be rather bad, correct? Guess what? Their vision is quite, fairly just right. It is higher than those who don’t play. And it can be better in two one-of-a-kind ways. The primary manner is that they’re truly competent to resolve small detail within the context of muddle, and although that suggests being capable to learn the quality print on a prescription rather than utilizing magnifier glasses, which you can simply do it with simply your eyesight. The wrong way that they’re better is truly being able to get to the bottom of exclusive levels of gray. Assume you’re driving in a fog. That makes a difference between seeing the car in entrance of you and averting the accident, or coming into an accident. So we’re actually leveraging that work to develop video games for sufferers with low vision, and to have an influence on retraining their mind to peer better. Obviously, relating to action video video games, screen time doesn’t make your eyesight worse. A further announcing that i’m definite you’ve all heard round: Video games lead to concentration issues and bigger distractability.Okay, we all know the right way to measure awareness within the lab. I am honestly going to provide you with an example of how we accomplish that. I will ask you to participate, so you’re going to ought to certainly play the sport with me. I’ll show you colored phrases. I need you to shout out the colour of the ink. Right? So that is the first instance. Orange, excellent. Green. Viewers: purple.Daphne Bavelier: red. DB: Yellow. Audience: Yellow. DB: red. Viewers: Yellow. DB: Yellow. K, you get my factor, right? (Laughter) you are getting higher, however it’s tough. Why is it difficult? Considering the fact that I introduced a conflict between the phrase itself and its color. How excellent your concentration is determines truly how speedy you unravel that conflict, so the younger guys right here at the top of their recreation almost always, like, did a little higher than a few of us which are older. What we can show is that when you do this sort of task with humans that play a lot of motion video games, they in reality get to the bottom of the conflict turbo. So obviously playing those action video games does not lead to attention problems. Definitely, these motion online game avid gamers have many different benefits in terms of awareness, and one part of awareness which can be elevated for the easier is our potential to monitor objects round on the planet. This is whatever we use at all times. When you are using, you are tracking, retaining monitor of the automobiles around you. You are additionally maintaining monitor of the pedestrian, the jogging dog, and that’s how one can simply be dependable driving, correct? In the lab, we get folks to come back to the lab, sit in front of a laptop display, and we supply them little tasks that i am going to get you to do once more. You are going to see yellow comfortable faces and some sad blue faces. These are children in the schoolyard in Geneva for the period of a recess during the wintry weather. Most children are completely satisfied. It is genuinely recess. But a few children are unhappy and blue on account that they’ve forgotten their coat. Every person starts to move around, and your challenge is to maintain monitor of who had a coat on the beginning and who failed to. So i’m simply going to exhibit you an illustration where there is only one sad child. It can be effortless considering the fact that that you may truely track it with your eyes. You could track, that you could track, and then when it stops, and there is a query mark, and i ask you, did this kid have a coat or no longer? Was it yellow originally or blue? I hear a number of yellow. Just right. So most of you’ve gotten a brain. (Laughter) i’m now going to ask you to do the undertaking, but now with slightly more challenging undertaking. There are going to be three of them which might be blue. Do not transfer your eyes. Please do not move your eyes. Maintain your eyes fixated and broaden, pull your attention. That is the one manner that you may without a doubt do it. If you happen to move your eyes, you’re doomed. Yellow or blue? Viewers: Yellow.DB: just right. So your typical average younger grownup can have a span of about three or 4 objects of attention. That’s what we simply did. Your motion video game player has a span of about six to seven objects of concentration, which is what’s proven on this video here. That’s for you guys, action online game avid gamers. A bit of tougher, correct? (Laughter) Yellow or blue? Blue. We have now some persons which are critical out there. Yeah. (Laughter) excellent. So in the equal way that we truely see the consequences of video video games on persons’s habits, we can use brain imaging and appear on the influence of video video games on the brain, and we do find many alterations, however the important alterations are without a doubt to the mind networks that manage attention. So one part is the parietal cortex which is very good identified to manage the orientation of attention. The opposite one is the frontal lobe, which controls how we preserve concentration, and one other one is the anterior cingulate, which controls how we allocate and keep watch over attention and unravel conflict. Now, when we do brain imaging, we discover that every one three of those networks are absolutely way more efficient in people that play action video games. This truely leads me to a rather counterintuitive discovering within the literature about technological know-how and the brain. You all know about multitasking. You all had been erroneous of multitasking when you’re riding and also you choose up your phone. Unhealthy idea. Very bad notion. Why? Considering that as your attention shifts to your cell mobile, you’re simply dropping the potential to react swiftly to the automobile braking in front of you, and so you’re more likely to get engaged into a vehicle accident. Now, we will measure that style of capabilities within the lab. We certainly do not ask men and women to force round and see how many auto accidents they have got. That might be a little bit highly-priced proposition. But we design tasks on the pc where we are able to measure, to millisecond accuracy, how just right they’re at switching from one assignment to a further.Once we try this, we virtually to find that humans that play a number of action video games are quite, relatively excellent. They swap fairly rapid, very swiftly. They pay an awfully small price. Now i’d like you to recall that influence, and put it within the context of a further crew of technology customers, a gaggle which is genuinely much revered by means of society, which can be humans that engage in multimedia-tasking. What’s multimedia-tasking? It can be the fact that most of us, most of our kids, are engaged with paying attention to tune even as as they are doing search on the internet at the same time as they may be chatting on fb with their friends. That is a multimedia-tasker. There was once a primary be taught carried out through colleagues at Stanford and that we replicated that showed that these humans that determine as being excessive multimedia-taskers are undoubtedly abysmal at multitasking. Once we measure them in the lab, they are fairly bad. Right? So these kind of results rather makes two predominant features. The first one is that no longer all media are created equal. You can not evaluate the result of multimedia-tasking and the effect of enjoying action video games. They have got utterly exclusive effects on unique points of cognition, perception and awareness. Even within video games, i am telling you proper now about these action-packed video video games. Distinctive video video games have an extra influence to your brains. So we genuinely have to step into the lab and rather measure what’s the result of every video game. The other lesson is that general knowledge incorporates no weight. I confirmed that to you already, like we looked at the truth that despite quite a few reveal time, these motion avid gamers have a number of superb vision, and many others. Here, what was once really placing is that these undergraduates that absolutely file conducting a lot of high multimedia-tasking are convinced they aced the test. So you show them their information, you exhibit them they are dangerous and so they’re like, "now not possible." you already know, they have got this type of intestine feeling that, quite, they’re doing rather, quite good. That is another argument for why we need to step into the lab and fairly measure the impact of science on the brain. Now in a sense, once we consider about the outcomes of video games on the mind, it is very similar to the outcomes of wine on the well being. There are some very poor makes use of of wine. There are some very poor uses of video games. However when consumed in reasonable doses, and on the right age, wine can also be excellent for health. There are absolutely specific molecules that have been identified in pink wine as leading to greater existence expectancy. So it’s the identical approach, like these action video video games have a quantity of constituents that are in reality quite powerful for brain plasticity, finding out, awareness, vision, and so forth., and so we need and we’re working on figuring out what are those energetic materials in order that we are able to quite then leverage them to deliver higher video games, either for education or for rehabilitation of patients. Now on account that we’re involved in having an affect for schooling or rehabilitation of patients, we’re truely no longer that fascinated with how these of you that decide upon to play video games for many hours on end perform. I’m way more occupied with taking any of you and showing that with the aid of forcing you to play an motion game, i will virtually exchange your vision for the better, whether you want to play that action sport or not, right? That is the point of rehabilitation or schooling. Most of the kids do not go to college announcing, "nice, two hours of math!" So that is really the crux of the study, and to do this, we need to go one other step. And a different step is to do training studies. So let me illustrate that step with a task which is referred to as mental rotation. Mental rotation is a task the place i’ll ask you, and again you’re going to do the mission, to seem at this form. Learn it, it is a target form, and i’ll present to you four extraordinary shapes. Such a 4 exceptional shapes is simply a circled variation of this shape. I need you to inform me which one: the first one, second one, 0.33 one or fourth one? Okay, i’m going to support you.Fourth one. A further. Get these brains working. Come on. That is our target shape. Third. Just right! That is hard, right? Like, the intent that I requested you to do this is due to the fact that you relatively suppose your mind cringing, proper? It doesn’t fairly consider like enjoying mindless motion video games. Well, what we do in these training stories is, humans come to the lab, they do tasks like this one, we then drive them to play 10 hours of motion games. They don’t play 10 hours of motion games in a row. They do dispensed practice, so little shots of forty minutes a few days over a period of two weeks. Then, once they are completed with the learning, they arrive back a few days later and they’re proven again on a similar type of intellectual rotation assignment. So this is work from a colleague in Toronto. What they showed is that, firstly, you realize, topics perform where they’re anticipated to perform given their age. After two weeks of training on motion video games, they certainly perform better, and the development continues to be there five months after having achieved the educational. That is quite, relatively important. Why? Due to the fact I instructed you we want to use these games for schooling or for rehabilitation. We must have results which can be going to be long-lasting. Now, at this point, a quantity of you might be in most cases wondering well, what are you waiting for, to position on the market a recreation that would be good for the awareness of my grandmother and that she would honestly revel in, or a game that might be best to rehabilitate the vision of my grandson who has amblyopia, for instance? Good, we’re engaged on it, however here is a project. There are mind scientists like me that are starting to fully grasp what are the nice constituents in video games to advertise optimistic effects, and that’s what i will call the broccoli part of the equation. There may be an enjoyment application industry which is enormously deft at arising with appealing merchandise that you simply are not able to withstand. That’s the chocolate facet of the equation. The obstacle is we need to put the two collectively, and it’s slightly bit like with meals.Who quite wants to eat chocolate-protected broccoli? None of you. (Laughter) and also you most often have had that feeling, proper, identifying up an schooling recreation and variety of feeling, hmm, you realize, it is not fairly enjoyable, it can be no longer fairly engaging. So what we want is really a brand new manufacturer of chocolate, a company of chocolate that is irresistible, that you simply fairly wish to play, however that has all the ingredients, the nice components which are extracted from the broccoli that you just cannot respect however are nonetheless working in your brains. And we’re working on it, but it surely takes mind scientists to return and to get together, men and women that work in the amusement program enterprise, and publishers, so these are not persons that in general meet everyday, however it’s clearly practicable, and we are on the right monitor. I’d like to depart you with that proposal, and thank you for your awareness. (Applause) (Applause) .

You Wonder What The Author Was Thinking
by Sonia Mitchell
Wednesday, 04 February 2009
Sonia learns an important moral lesson about impulse buying, with Charles Stross's Halting State.
Uh-oh! This is in the Axis of Awful...~
From the blurb, and the little card on the shelf telling me that a bookseller recommended it, I thought Charles Stross’s novel Halting State sounded good enough for an impulse buy on a 3 for 2 offer. Seduced by the fun little pixel people on the cover, and the intriguing description, I didn’t even take the elementary precaution of reading a few pages.
If I’d bothered, I might have noticed this book’s major failing. It’s written in the second person.
Second person is good for some things. Choose Your Own Adventure books, text adventure games... interactive fiction, basically. I can only presume that Stross is attempting a homage to such games, but in doing so he does seem to miss the point using the style. The principle advantage to the second person is that it lets you place yourself – or a character of your choosing - in the story. Combined with the ability to make choices, this give you a lot of freedom in the way you follow the plot. Zork never told me what I thought of the thief, only what he looked like. It was up to me whether I wanted to try killing or kissing him. The game made very few assumptions about me, other than that I was mobile, able to carry things and able to perform those actions that it recognised. The internet tells me that later in the series you’re satirically addressed as AFGNCAAP - Ageless, Faceless, Gender-Neutral, Culturally-Ambiguous Adventure Person - though as I’ve been stuck on Zork II for years I’ve never had the pleasure of that address. At any rate, the freedom to choose your own character helps the player immerse themselves in the game in ways that can never happen when you’re guiding Mario on his way to find the princess. (There are exceptions, of course. The
Hitchhiker’s infocom game
has you playing in the second person as characters from the series, but that’s the point of the game and you come into it knowing what you’re going to get).
Basically, while second person has its advantages, they centre around making the reader a participant. This novel doesn’t even bother to try doing that, instead trying to balance three characters’ viewpoints. You jump from being a female police sergeant, a female insurance investigator and a male computer programmer. The latter, incidentally, is harbouring Dark Secrets that work really fucking well in the second person, when you keep thinking about the Dark Secrets without ever being able to articulate them into actual thoughts.
It’s difficult to get past the second person problem and review any other aspects of the plot, but I will just in case you’re intrigued by the blurb and decide to risk it. I’m going to have to spoil it, but without apology because I believe I’m doing you a favour. Also because I stuck with the book right to the end and I need to make it worthwhile somehow.
The near-future novel claims to be about an apparently impossible raid which takes place in a World of Warcraft-style game. The virtual treasures stolen in this raid have real world value, and the book supposedly deals with the real world consequences of what happened in the game. To me, that sounded pretty awesome. A novel about games and computer crime should have been fun, and the aforementioned little pixel people on the cover also contributed to my impression that the book would be a light and enjoyable look at gaming. The actual focus, though, is more on insider trading and various bit of European politics that presumably fit together somehow. There’s a board of stereotypical fat-cats, and one of them did something bad while another one’s a goody. I couldn’t tell you which is which, despite the Big Revelation of the bad guy.
Oh, and incidentally Scotland now has its independence, which is really good, and England is doing quite badly as a result for reasons that never become clear. Something about the English reaping what they sowed. Don’t worry about remembering this though, as the text will be sure to remind you. Inexplicably, it even reminds you when you’re currently the English woman, who somehow connects the failing tube system with the closing of the borders. I think. To be frank, I was getting a bit annoyed with the book by then, so I may be misremembering.
As another incidentally, this is the future, so everyone wears FutureGlasses, as possibly seen in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine in the seventies. They allow the wearer to be connected to whatever network they’re engaging with, such as CopSpace (okay, FutureGlasses was facetious. CopSpace, unfortunately, is Stross’s actual term) or the game they’re playing. They’re also got various recording devices built in and overlay nicely with the real world most of the time. Bizarrely, despite the fact that people walk around with computers on their faces, ‘geek’ is still used as a pejorative.
Do you need another ‘incidentally’? How about the fact that the insurance investigator also specialises in sword fighting and conveniently impulse buys a broadsword which is not mentioned again until a bad guy needs sorting out in her hotel room? Yeah, I’m getting a hit cross writing all this. I spent money on this book. The excessive programming language doesn’t really help, either, especially as I suspect that since this is set in the future some of it’s made up. I could be wrong, though, as Stross’s own background is in programming. Either way, he overkills on the acronyms and abbreviations for my layperson’s taste.
Even without the massive problem of the second person, this wouldn’t be a great book. Which is a shame, because the initial idea was pretty promising, and I’m still open to the idea that a story about a MMORPG could be fun. Unfortunately the plot of this book turns out to be quite dull, and from time to time it just gets irritating. There are good moments and interesting points – an exciting scene in which two of the characters had to escape from a remotely-controlled taxi is a high point - and I did get quite absorbed in the book at times, but I can’t recommend it to anyone else. There’s just too much working against it.
Ultimately, Halting State is readable, but I’m still stuck on my initial question of why anyone would write a book in the second person. It’s such a bad technique that I’ve felt justified telling people about the book in social situations, and the only other books I tend to do that with are the latter volumes of King’s Dark Tower series (for reasons that will become very clear if the reading canary ever tackles them). Even when you get sucked into the book enough to overlook it, next time you pick it up you’ll get that jolt all over again. Surely someone along the publishing process raised an eyebrow when they saw what they were producing?
Morbid curiosity, however, is rarely a good reason to pick up a book, and I don’t suggest you do it. And kids - always glance at the first few pages before you buy.Themes:

at 10:21 on 2009-02-04I'm glad (glad in the schadenfreude sense of the word) you read this ... the cover has been attracting me from Borders for a while now and it was just a matter of time until I picked it up. I have such a terrible habit of judging books by their covers - I might make a theme for it, actually :) I'm not sure I can actually think of (m)any books about gaming / virtual worlds that aren't entirely made of stupid, or offensive in some other way...

Maybe it will, but it'll have to be someone else doing it; I can smell the stench of King's solipsism from a mile off.
The England/Scotland thing seems especially bizarre. It's like someone needs to sit down with Stross and draw a diagram of where the taxes come from and where the taxes go...

at 14:30 on 2009-02-04I do know two good things that address the reader directly, but neither of them are full-length books written completely in the second person. One is "If on a winter's night a traveller" which is all about readers of books so it makes a lot of sense, and the other is a German short story where the point of the direct address is not so much to involve the reader as a participant as to characterise the reassuring, mysterious voice talking to someone as their life flashes before their eyes (it's more like overhearing it talking to someone else). Definitely something you need to have a good reason to do though – and not something to do badly. Why do you think it was being attempted here?

at 15:38 on 2009-02-04I have to admit everything I've read from Stross has been great, and in most cases his fascinating ideas have been good enough for me to forgive the slightly idealistic political allegory. But writing the book in the second person... well, I'm disappointed in him. Especially if it's all about MMORPGs, and full of slightly silly Scots nationalism (yes, Mr Stross, we know you're proud to be Scottish).
I am mildly curious about him working programmer-ish language into a book without ruining it for non-programmers, though. I shall have to leaf through the book in Borders at some point. Perhaps there will be geek in-jokes that redeem the book somewhat.

I'm not entirely sure. The book has a theme of the erosion of boundaries between the real and the virtual, so I suspect that by casting the reader as participant Stross was trying to play with the real/made-up boundary. If that's what he was aiming for, though, it wasn't effective on me.
Or maybe he just hates his readers.

I can actually think of (m)any books about gaming / virtual worlds that aren't entirely made of stupid, or offensive in some other way...
Aren't they usually made of stupid *and* offensive, in exactly the same way every time, to wit:
"Okay, right, so the core idea of this book is that ... like *games* ... right take place in ... like ... worlds. But the *real* world is ... like ... also a world so ... like ... people who play games must get ... like ... confused about what's real and what isn't."
Why yes, I am still bitter about

I'm picturing 'exported' characters wandering round casually smashing objects in the search for powerups, jumping on people's heads or demanding quests from people in the Lamb and Flag...
If they're going for that "core idea", of course, then the in-game characters should also be influenced by real-world stuff. "Sorry, I can't slay the Lord of the Ogres and free your children, I've got laundry to do."

Otherland

In practice it is about Tad Williams giving an airing to some of his undeveloped story ideas (including honest to god
Wizard of Oz
fanfiction) before slapping us all about the face with a deus ex machina and declaring the story over.

Though to give it its due, the Metaverse of Snow Crash is probably the most accurate envisioning of Second Life-style virtual worlds the cyberpunk movement ever produced, mainly because Stephenson realised that some people would just make their avatars giant purple cocks. Which doesn't mean it lacks its share of stupid and offensive content (anti-rape devices which only work if you're already being raped!).

From what I have heard, and the little I have read of him, this seems to be Stephenson's problem in a nutshell. His books are so enslaved to the ideas at their core that they're, um, kind of the opposite of books.
I have to confess, I lose all my genre points because I haven't actually read Ender's Game...

It wouldn't be so bad in
Snow Crash
, except that the idea he chooses to obsess over happens to be the least interesting one he presents in it... franchise nationality? The internet as a shallow pit of wish-fulfilment? (Man, did he call that one...) Stateless communities based on lashed-together ships in international waters? Pizza delivery tanks?
Snow Crash
is stuffed with cool shit; unfortunately, it all gets shoved bodily offstage every time the origins of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind waddles its fat, pasty, historically inaccurate, cribbed from Burroughs arse onstage to do its ludicrous little dance and spout its silly little monologues. How I hate that creature.
I've not read

at 11:01 on 2009-02-20The second person was nearly enough to drive me away in the first chapter. I hate being told what I feel or think. Unbelievably irritating. And it only gets worse when you jump to another character in the next. I think there could be a case made for it if it had been better implemented, but i wasn't expecting it and it threw me.
The rest of the complaints didn't bother me much though. If you read it as a story about the future of the IT society it's quite interesting and fun. It seems that you are pulling the book apart based on what you wanted it to be, rather than what it is.
For example: CopSpace is a terrible name but it brings together the ideas of the internet of things, ubiquitous computing, augmented reality etc etc quite well. The story then allows discussion of how such technologies might get used, their benefits, their flaws and also the wider ranging implications for society...
It's a similar thought experiment about most of the issues with online activity, and how they will only become more important. For me, that's interesting.
On another note - the pixel people were enough to put me off the buying the book entirely, rather than an attraction. If my brother hadn't lent it to me, I would never have read it.

at 00:11 on 2009-02-21Hi bitterlittleman, thanks for the comments. I'm glad you managed better than me in getting past the second person problem.
It seems that you are pulling the book apart based on what you wanted it to be, rather than what it is.
Good point, but I think the book did make promises it veered from. I expected a fun gaming read because of the incident it began with, because of the blurb (though I appreciate that was written by marketing people rather than the author) and because of the cover. I wasn't led to expect a board-room book, and I wouldn't have read it if I'd known.
So I'll concede I have prejudices against the genre it turned out to be, but I don't think the book should have disguised itself as another genre.
It's a similar thought experiment about most of the issues with online activity, and how they will only become more important. For me, that's interesting.
In general I agree, but in this specific case I think it was badly handled. The idea that the future of IT is in computerised glasses seems outdated and unlikely to me. The remote controlled taxis, on the other hand, rang true, and I think Stross does have some good ideas in the book. I would perhaps pick up something else of his (after checking the viewpoint this time).

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/09/23/androids-first-killer-feature-compass-mode/
(sorry, first example i found, its 2am.)
Once you want that kind of data on a heads up display to keep your hands free, glasses start to be more practical...
I'd say that we're way closer to CopSpace than autonomous vehicles like the taxi's described. For reference, I did information engineering, including modules on autonomous vehicles, intelligent systems (AI) and computer vision. My masters project was a combination.

at 15:59 on 2009-02-21I think the key point is this:
Once you want that kind of data on a heads up display to keep your hands free, glasses start to be more practical...
Which is sort of the issue; how many applications are there where it's more practical to have a load of distracting crap appear in your glasses?
It's also worth noting that
HUDs
have existed for a while, and I think it's noteworthy that the information they present:
- Is presented in a very sparse style. You don't want this information to actually get in the way of something you might bump into.
- Is related exclusively to the task at hand. Distracting car drivers or aircraft pilots with ephemera while they fly is a no-no.
- Relate entirely to the operation of vehicles.
Basically, I think the uses of HUDs for pedestrians are going to be extremely limited.

at 20:19 on 2009-02-21I could see the odd extra use for them, at least in a story. Traffic police could have HUDs that flashed up speed, vehicle tax status, and checked vehicles against police records. Security guards, scuffers and bouncers might have something that matched your face to records of troublemakers, or scanned and tagged you for possible weapons. Warehouse foremen or car park wardens could have HUDs to help identify each item and navigate around. Workers in sewers, mines or other confusing places could have HUD maps and compasses (like in a game). Or if you were doing pure information work (coding, examining photos or something) you might use them to avoid distractions.
It all rather depends on what other gear you're packing, though. I mean, if your HUD can detect RFID tags, or contain X-ray scanners, or spot and label problems with machinery, that's useful. If they just display the latest headlines, less so.

at 01:02 on 2009-02-22But I think it's also worth considering whether it's more useful to have this sort of stuff on your glasses or some other surface. With the traffic police, it's surely more useful to just project the information onto the windscreen or something. With security guards and bouncers, I'm not sure putting this stuff on something that might get ripped off/smashed in a scuffle is necessrily a smart move.
Also, if you happen to be longsighted, there's obvious problems with trying to read something that's projected onto the inside of your glasses...

I've found that to be the case with everything Stross writes -- in this case, from what I'm seeing here, the vehicle for these ideas might be a bit lacking.
The idea that the future of IT is in computerised glasses seems outdated and unlikely to me
Well, the idea's not novel -- the first time I came across it was
in the 90s
, and even Stross has been
playing with it since 2005
.
Projecting things onto your glasses would be easier and cheaper than putting them in contact lenses or implanting them into your retina, which are AFAIK fairly well-known SF tropes (@Arthur: while it's non-trivial I think it would be perfectly doable to adjust the focus of the projection to be perfectly clear to your eyesight), and I for one think it's pretty cool and wish we had the commercially-available technology to do that today. Presumably, once the glasses are developed, you could stick a Bluetooth receiver into them and then have them interface with everything from your mobile phone to, as Shimmin suggests, an X-ray scanner...

At first, don't mention anything about money or gifts, or perhaps your finances and the way that much help you need. Seriously, I had one lady tell me over and also again what amount she loves money and gifts, in minutes after she first met me. I think it shows not enough class, and makes us want to care for you like 'you know what'. For a ton of sugar babies, Meet Sugar Daddy brings an entirely new world into their lives - that on the wealthy, famous and prestigious. A spanking new sports car as an existing is just the appropriate way to welcome her to this fascinating new lifestyle. She's going to love the eye and envious stares she's as she cruises down her street on her new vehicle.
In network marketing there a multitude of who sign up and even purchase a product, but they consume and expect someone else to perform the marketing these. They expect their sponsor to hold their business hand by setting within the back office for them, writing all the advertising for them, watching television telephone calls for them and shutting the sales for all involved. Wait a minute. What is wrong along with this picture? Should the sponsor will probably be do each of the work, after that your sponsor consists of a right to every one of of the income. Enthusiasm for a new business becomes a blame game and whine session when the money does not flow in the bank plan.
Along having a beautiful home and luxurious facilities, you would find every kind of car in his garage. Novice is the Best Sugar Daddy Meet would possess associated with wheels like high-speed super bikes, cars with exceptional power and design in brands like BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari or some other high-priced MUVs and SUVs, all that speaks his style and statement of life. also. Don't hesitate to dream - simply live on one occasion. Think about the length and width of the home, the education, your family, etc. Just pen these thoughts down of how one can want the to look like. Once you list down your ideals, remember to factor in mundane issues like kids education, insurance, etc.
There are some partners who expect to contribute practically nothing to a relationship, consequently they may supply unfair expectations of public record information should receive - we typically call these people 'gold diggers'. They expect their romantic partners may them more than they are willing to give others -typically these people freeloaders. Really can notice the signs, when you start the only person doing all the giving! Definitely a Sore point!

If obtaining the non-public label resell rights to a selected product appears like a tremendous business opportunity, you might be proper. Nevertheless, articles that are modified extensively after edits are completed, and that live on Network Sites, might be moved again to HubPages.
