2023 Ariel Restyles

These girls took me nearly three months to finish lol What started as a very simple attempt to redress my 2023 Ariel dolls in nicer outfits turned into an annoyingly expensive 3-month project in which I purchased multiple Ariel dolls, outfits, accessories and tons of sequins and pearls and repainting supplies in order to construct what I imagine a set of 2023 Ariel dolls would look like if they had the same budget, design team and quality of early-mid 2000's Mattel Disney dolls lol Literally so much fucking text below the cut because I couldn't help but explain every minute aspect of my decision making for these dolls like anyone cares!!!!

Mermaid Ariel is wearing a lot of different pieces combined together; my desire for this set was for them to look and feel like they had been manufactured and released by Mattel, so I pulled a lot of elements shared between various mermaid Ariel dolls that they've made over the years and combined them to look like a natural continuation of what they had been doing prior to 2016! Her tail comes from the 2008 Ariel and Friends gift set but has been given a few extra details that were heavily inspired by Forever Hair Ariel from 2004, the bra is from a hasbro Ariel but was altered to fit the Mattel body (and once again has details added to match the tail), and the starfish clip is from the 1997 Ariel and baby Sandy set with the addition of some extra shell sequins in a slight homage to the 2003 Charming Princess Ariel doll's hairpiece. The purse is from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll but has been painted purple to match the rest of her outfit; this piece took the longest because I had to spray it with a base (Mr Hobby Base in White) in order for the acrylic paint to adhere which is something I have NEVER done before and felt incredibly daunting to even attempt (thank you for the help John!!!) but I finally got the courage to try and it worked out perfectly! I was originally dead-set on using real sculpted accessory parts from actual Mattel dolls to construct the embellishments on her outfit because Mattel will rarely use pre-made sequins and buttons for their dolls, but eventually I came to the conclusion that it's not too far out of the realm of possibility and I would be better off creating something that is evocative of factory-made dolls and has the right balance of colors and fabric than it would be to make a less cohesive outfit with a bunch of mismatched sculpted parts that don't look like they were made by the same person. If she were an actual release by Mattel, I think she'd either just be called Deluxe Mermaid Ariel or maybe Magic Pearls Ariel if she were a gimmick doll (perhaps with a color change gimmick on the pearls, hairclip and purse?) lol Some photos of the Ariel dolls that inspired me (Forever Hair obviously being the biggest inspo):

Pink Dress Ariel is a lot simpler but actually took the most work and took me the furthest out of my comfort zone when it comes to skill; her dress comes from the 2006 Glitter Princess Ariel doll but has been heavily embellished to look more 'deluxe playline', the peplum was gathered for a little more volume at the waist, pearls added to the waist, hem and collar and the darts on the front of her bodice were tightened to fit the bust on 2023 body more. Pink Dress went through the most trial and error because I couldn't figure out what to use for her tiara or the embellishments on her dress, but I eventually settled on sequins and pearls to match the Mermaid doll because I felt it would give the impression that they were designed as part of the same collection (and it also just looked the best out of everything else lol) Her tiara is from the 2023 Color Splash Ariel doll but was sprayed white and painted over with pearlescent white acrylic paint; I only painted it with one color because Mattel doll tiaras are rarely painted and the original Glitter Princess tiara is also one solid color. Originally I tried using a few Barbie tiaras that already came in the color I needed, but eventually came to the conclusion that she would only look right with an actual 2023 Ariel tiara lol Finally I gave her a choker (a very common design element with Mattel Ariel dolls that I really love) as well as the dinglehopper and shoes from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll! For how deliberately playline-esque and simple these dolls are, it was honestly such a big project to put them together; I learned so many new skills through this project and it was a lot of fun to explore the elements that made the old Mattel Ariel dolls so special in order to combine them in a way that feels authentic, even if it results in a set of dolls that are purposefully lower-impact than a more elaborate custom would be lol

Crafty shit 1

I got SO MANY CRAFT ideas to share with whoever may stumble across this unknowingly:

To make plastic fangs, claws, or any other thing you need easily moldable plastic that's foodsafe, use Polymorph. All you do is throw some of these little pellet motherfuckers in some boiling water until it's clear, then scoop that little bitch back out and mold it as needed >:D it's endlessly reusable and works amazingly for fangs assuming you don't have wacky ass teeth like I do T^T

One of my favorite crafts to do is make these strange little mushrooms out of hot glue. You basically are gonna need:

~ hot glue gun + sticks

~ some surface that hot glue does not stick to that is either flat or bowl shaped (this will be for the top of your mushroom! I think it's called the cap? I use those weird poppit fidget things for my mushroom tops, and it works like a charm! but use whatever works for you)

~ bowl of cold-ish water (just not room temp, slightly lower is good :p)

mk so after you get all the things then you:

Turn on the hot glue. you fucking idiot. if you need hot glue for a craft turning it on/plugging it in is sp obvious my grandma would've known that and she's been in the ground for years.

I don't know the right word to use here. Extrude? Use? Pump out? whatever it is, do that to the hot glue either into your bowl shaped mold or into a circle on your flat mold

while that dries, get your bowl of water and hold your glue gun about 4 inches away from the waters surface. Squeeze out little lines, it's ok if their funky or curved (this is gonna be ur stems so it's boring if it's all straight lines)

MUSHROOM-VENGERS ASSEMBLE. no seriously though. Make an additional larger vaugly circular thing, thatll be the ground. then attack the stems to the caps, and the full shroomies to the base. HELL YEAH YOU MADE MUSHROOM LITTLE THINGS

optionally, you can paint it if you don't like that unfinished hot glue feel. I use just acrylic paint, and do mostly plain colors for the caps with white spots, mix brown and white for a light tan for the stem, and just use plain green for the grass, but it's up for interpretation as your creative gremlin self decides

leon gets a little self-conscious when it’s his turn because his nails are highkey disgusting from all the time he spends playing baseball - there’s dirt trapped under them and everything so he’s just like hhhhhhh anxiety go brrrr but anyway he gets solid black because he’s edgy and cool like that 😎

I think Taka gets a French manicure with little dark red flowers pressed towards the tips because!!! simple yet pretty!!!

Celeste probably takes the longest because her request is sooooo complicated like it’s black and red and long ass acrylics with overlapping patterns and everyone else just kinda sits there feeling h o r r i b l e for that poor nail stylist

Toko gets a checkerboard pattern, with each nail having a different neon color in place of white!!! Because she knows that Jill will find it cool and pretty and colorful the next time she fronts (visual stimming jill?? 👀)

anyway Makoto????? rainbow loom????? absolutely

he has so many bracelets!!!!! so many so many so many and he knows how to create such a wide variety of styles it’s so cool!!!!!! he wears a bunch of them at any given time because they are so fun to fidget with!!!! and rubber texture hvvvvhvv!!!!

and he creates personalized ones for his friends, too, like he knows their favorite colors and sometimes picks up on whether they prefer a certain style or not from the way they react to the other ones he’s made and it’s!!! just so neat!!!!!

I’m thinking about it and!!! he has a bi pride fishtail, a trans pride arrow stitch, a black and neon green railroad, a pastel pink/blue/purple/yellow ladder, a jelly yellow and green dragon scale, a rainbow double cross, and a bunch more!!! he also has a bunch with charms and beads added into them!!!!

He also makes them for his friends even if he knows they won’t wear them!! Like Toko, for example, isn’t the biggest fan of jewelry because she doesn’t like the texture, but he creates one for her anyway and fills it with so much love (it looks like a daisy chain!!!! because at least she’ll be able to look at it and hold it and still be interested in it without it needing to be on her wrist!!!)

he makes a ton of bright colored ones for Mukuro (usually either single or inverted fishtail because he knows she wouldn’t enjoy wearing anything too heavy or overbearing) so that she has more mobile visual stims!!!

similar for Jill!! although most of hers tend to be black and bright neon rainbow in various bulkier styles!!!! Jill will also force him to let her look at his bracelet-covered arm whenever they hang out because. my god,,,,,,so many Colors™️

he’s found that togami prefers black and white simpler styles, and that Kyoko absolutely adores singles, fishtails, and double fishtails in any shade of purple, and that Mondo likes any of the larger styles in darker colors + blacks and grays!!! Chihiro loves anything with jelly and glitter bands!!!

Leon usually only wears one at a time, but he cycles through every single one that his boyfriend’s ever made for him because????? GOD they’re so cool and his boyfriend is so crafty and incredible and just,,,,,,,,,hvvvhvv every time he looks at the one he’s wearing he’s able to calm himself down and remember that Makoto loves him........it’s also very good for stim and fidgeting <3

Hi! Loved ALL your fic recs!! Do you read girl direction fics? And if so what are your favourites?

LISSSSSTEN, I love rec’ing fic, come ask me for fic recs all day long, my god, you don’t even know. I’ve read some great girl direction fic, but definitely not as much as I’ve read boy direction (sadly, I think that’s down to content in general, there’s just more boy direction than anything else). THAT SAID, I have faves, and I’ve asked some of my faves for their faves, too, so we’ve got you covered, bb! This got kind of long, so I’ll pull it under the cut…fingers crossed, ratcha fratcha, mobile version!

Let’s start with objectlesson, aka @alienfuckeronmain, and maybe you’ve read ‘em already, but go read them again! I’m only slightly biased because I did the beta job on these, lol, but I also think one of the truly undersung themes in Phoenix’s girl direction work is the tremendous amounts of body positivity in all of ‘em):

The Daisy Chain series, 20k words total, 2 parts, E. Ten minutes later, an awkward, long-legged, curly-haired, so pale she’s reflective, and so obviously gay-looking Harry Styles is sitting shotgun next to Louis in a bikini, denim cut-offs, and heart-framed sunnies. (P’s first girl direction, and it’s so sweet and pure and PUBETASTIC in a way that anyone who’s ever worn a too-small bathing suit will instantly get)

Dream About That Casual Touch, 7.6k Words, E. And that was the first thing Louis noticed about her. Not her nipples, or not only her nipples, anyway, but the fact that she was so confident with her body and didn’t seem to care that her tits were sort of soft and floppy and uneven or that she had a little roll of pudge around her hips that poked over the top of her jeans when she wore crop tops. (A story of two terrible, fucked up dates before finally getting it right)

From Now Until Forever, 9k words, E. The girls go to Britney Nite and Louis wears Juicy track pants and Harry is not ok. (This one is borderline crack fic but only because it’s so fucking FUN, like, you can practically see the outfits, but it still has a tremendous amount of heart/emotion/heat)

In the Heat of the Night, 7.7k words, E. Louis is the only butch in London with a truck and Harry needs to move a couch. (Give this girl a trope like bed-sharing, and she will take it to the NEXT LEVEL)

Diamonds in the Moonlight, 16k words, M. The 70s au where Harry is a rich girl stuck in the suburbs who thinks she loves Shaun Cassidy, and Louis is the skater who breaks into her backyard and changes everything forever. (I dare you to read this and not immediately visualize a tender coming-of-age movie, like, it literally unfolds in your mind’s eye, it’s so VISUAL)

Holy, 6.6k words, E. Louis wants to eat burgers and smoke weed and be twenty three. She wants to wake up with Harry and spend the whole day in bed fingering each other because they finally don’t have to have goddamn acrylic nails for once. She wants to grow her pubes out. She wants to lounge around in a posh, red-velvet High Hefner robe. (One of the rare canon ones, and it’s so fucking good, maybe my fave? I imagine this very much WOULD BE girl Louis)

What a Heavenly Way to Die, 8k words, E. She’s thought about it a lot, and two big things seem to be holding her back, aside from the uncontrollable paralysis that overtakes her body every time she so much as tries to sneak a hand under the waistband of Harry’s knickers. (Another canon one, X Factor era)

Dreaming of a True Love’s Kiss, 17k words, E. Zayn is a no-nonsense career lady and Niall is the literal Disney Princess who uproots her life (and also teaches her a thing or two about birdhouses, and love). (Honestly, so sweet and cute and who knew we all needed ziall enchanted???) 

I Must Confess (I Still Believe), 44k words, M. Harry is the new girl at an all girl Catholic Girl’s School, and Louis is the unattainable, dashing senior who changes her forever. (The author notes on this one still break my heart, aggressive sighing)

…and this one isn’t strictly girl direction, but it’s girls around One Direction, and it’s so brilliant, my god: Snakes and Stones, 1.4k, E. If you call a girl a snake enough, sometimes she becomes one. Her legs lengthen and fuse, her pupils shrink to slits.

Next up, Blake, aka @newleafover. They haven’t written too much girl direction (at least compared to their fantastic boy direction work), but what they’ve done is outstanding (as per usj):

Something in the way she mooooves, 11.4k words, M. Harry is a veterinary science student who’s failing all her science classes and a softball-playing lesbian who runs away from the ball. She chose her major because of her love of cows. She joined the softball team because of Louis. (Do I have a soft spot for this one because it takes place where I went to school? Maybe so! It’s a great read to boot!!)

The Ballet Direction series, 22.9k words, 3 parts, M/E/T.  Harry is invited to practise her Snow Queen solo in a post-class rehearsal with Louis Tomlinson, who is only the most beautiful, charming, talented ex-Sugar Plum Fairy in the whole world. (There are about 25 things to love in this series, and it was such a sweet one to work on!!!!)

I’m putting the rest of my recs here in no particular order, and they aren’t necessarily my top picks by each author, but each author has written a lot of amazing girl direction stories, so I suggest reading their latest ones below and diving deeper:

What service do you use for your acrylic keychain charms?

I use Vograce on Alibaba! 

Theyre a lot more popular with big groups going all in on big group orders, but they do offer no MOQ ( minimum order quantity ) with their charms ! so if you wanted to just buy like 2 charms you could totally do that.

the downside is , since its coming from china, shipping is going to cost a fuck ton. ( shipping can be anywhere from 30 - 50 dollars, maybe more depending . )

Making books is fun

Frustrating when you technically still "just moved" (even though you've been here over a month) and can't find any of your damn tools, but I used a push pin. Besides, punching your needle holes is only a tiny part.

I also got thirty-seven pages of script formatted. And then I made some ATC templates. I started to use these to make frames on my blank signatures--I don't want to stitch them in until all the frames are drawn onto the pages. This time around, I'm experimenting with Coptic binding and I'm actually really pleased with the result. I didn't use any fun colored thread (even though I have a ton of threads I could choose from), and I didn't do anything fun with the stitches like make them say "fuck you" or "danger", which would be fun to pull off.

However, I have this patterned scrapbook paper from Michael's, it's a white background with cotton candy, ice cream and...... something else, a lollipop? I'll take a photo when I'm done stitching this book. It's such a cute pattern, unfortunately I only get one set of covers per sheet and so much scrap. I had already coated this paper in a few coats of furniture finish mod podge and doesn't end up using it how I thought I would--I also bought some mermaid paper, and I ended up using that to display my enamel pins and acrylic charms.

I want to buy a bunch more of these sheets, a variety of colors and patterns, and coat them in mod podge a good amount of time before I want to use them so that I can just use them without waiting for them to cure.

The reason one sheet only makes one set of covers is, I thought I'd get the best oomph by pasting two layers together--a little more strength, and a bonus of having a bright, cheerful pattern just inside the book, like an end paper. So one giant sheet gives me the mileage for four pieces the size of my cover. I could even paste together different papers, if I had them--but that seems a little chaotic for me.

It could be interesting to see how well paper works for a classic cover-spine-cover cover. You'd definitely want the gauze on the spine for extra stability. Maybe you'd also add some chipboard or cardstock to the inside of the spine and maybe sandwich your end page in your cover and end paper?

I only have a whole pack of paper that I want to turn into my little sketchbooks--and whether or not an agent wants my story, I want to see this thing through. Even if I never get to the next book of the story.

Hey Lady! I've caught the watercolor bug again and I busted out my paints to do some practicing. But I've only ever used watercolors like three times before, so I was wondering if you had any quick tips and suggestions for beginners, or like, advice you wouldn't get from a class. Also if possible, could you explain to me how gouache works? I've read about it but I still don't understand it. Any words you have would be helpful; thanks so much for your time. :)

Sorry this took so long, I had an Interesting Night when you sent this and it took me a while to have the fortitude to run through a whole answer!  Don’t worry, sometimes even the advice you get in a class doesn’t make any goddamn sense.  I was literally told, “Be one with the paint” in one of my first watercolor classes.  I think I remember putting my brush down and looking around at everyone else to confirm whether or not I was on television. 

That’s a good thing to say someone who is already skilled a little bit, but to a person just trying to figure out what the fuck to do with the medium, it’s not super useful.  

Uh, let’s see, I don’t know what stuff you’re currently up against, and forgive me for saying so, but it’s been a while since I was a beginner at this, so I’m trying to remember what would have been helpful to me ten years ago.

I start with shadows or just darker areas and I had to learn over the years not to be afraid to commit to a dark color early on.  Paper can only take so much water before it starts shredding, so you have limited numbers of times you can wash back over something.  When you start with the dark areas you can kind of blend them out with a lighter color and then leave places as the white of the paper as the color dilutes.  

Some of the beauty of watercolor does come when you just abandon control of it a little.  Sometimes I think it’s not so much ‘painting’ with watercolor as ‘controlling’ or ‘herding’ it.  But it takes sort of a while to get the hang of letting it go wild in an artsy fashion. This is where my instructor was trying to articulate ‘be one with the paint’.    

Mix colors with their compliments rather than a black or brown to make them darker.  Watercolor can get muddy really easily even without doing this, so it’s best to keep your colors as purely COLOR as possible.  This also helps you avoid things looking sort of washed out and dull in the end.  

Related to that, things will dry a little less intense/lighter than the color you first down, so again, don’t be afraid to commit to a darker or more intense color.  It will almost always calm down and you’ll likely darken it even more later to balance the painting.  

The paper you use does make a difference.  The paint will pool on some papers and not others.  It’ll raise the pulp on some paper.  It’ll stay workable on some and get sucked in immediately on some others.  If you find the paint is staying wet too long or not long enough for you, try changing up your paper before giving up on what you want to do.  Some papers will almost record every stroke you make so everything is really patchy, and others will blend so much it’s like running a brush chaotically over ice.  It all depends on what you want to do and what you like.

I find varying whether you let an edge dry in a hard line or a soft blend makes paintings interesting looking.

Try varying whether you wet the paper before you put paint on it.  You can do combos like a lot of water on both the brush and the paper, tons of water on the paper but not much on the brush, a little water on both... If you’re looking for soft or smooth coverage of big spaces, this might help. 

Gouache is technically supposed to be used in an opaque manner, but I’m a troll and use it almost entirely like watercolor, which you can do too if you have some.  There is a lot of pigment in gouache, so I get a lot of my really bright shit accomplished with gouache rather than watercolor.  Since you can use them together, I usually end up mixing them without even realizing what I’m doing.  I do use it somewhat properly for big areas of solid flat black, and I like using white gouache for highlights, but I don’t often otherwise use it like a proper artist.   I’ve used it the way it’s supposed to be while I was in school a few times, but I was not overly charmed with the application of opaque stuff in general.  I did see some demonstrations of its superior pigmentation and brighter color than most acrylic, though, so if I ever decided to paint opaquely, I’d probably be using gouache rather than acrylic. Maybe I should approach it again!  My acrylics all get used to doll faces now anyway haha   It’s more expensive than watercolor in a lot of cases, so unless your soul is screaming ‘BRIGHTER COLORS, DAMMIT’ like mine often is, I wouldn’t fuss too hard with gouache for now.
