5. Cutting Corners

“What,”  a sibilant hiss curled around the room, over the sounds of casting magics and Creation, “Do you think you are doing.”

Hythlodaeus looked up in surprise at the sound, his mask almost falling off from the speed his head snapped upright. The rest of the research room became still as everyone identified the source of the words; two amaurotines, one noticeably shorter than the other, clustered against a table that held the diagrams for a new Creation that was half formed. Hythlodaeus couldn’t remember their names at all, only recognizing them in passing from the halls of the Akademy. They were partners, he thought, working together on some higher project assigned to them by the professors. 

“I-I was going to add the next building block,” the taller one said, their shoulders hunched defensively and their hands trembling around the diagram. 

Everyone could see the sneer that came over the face of the other, and he crossed his arms over his chest. “Why.” 

Hythlodaeus felt a small smile come over his lips, and he leaned forward on the table and put his chin in his hand to cover the expression.

“The-- The base is done, yes? It needs the next layer for the Creation to start to take shape,” the taller said, nervously licking their lips. What was their name, Hythlodaeus couldn’t remember… Quite rude of him. 

“Is it.” The shorter said, and it wasn’t so much a question as a statement, his head cocking to the side ever so slightly. “Tell me, what materials were you going to be using for the next?” 

“Material 42b, to give it buoyancy,” the first said, confusion coloring their voice. “Daedalus, if you’re going to criticize me, it could at least be in private.” 

Reflexively, Hythlodaeus glanced again at the Creation, and just barely managed to contain his shocked intake of breath. Combining that building block with--oh dear. 

“And why would we not use Material 42a instead?” the shorter, Daedalus apparently, asked. He made no indication that he heard the reprimand, instead glaring at the researcher underneath his mask. The acrid tone was only enhanced by how his soul flared with anger for all to see, and something else that he was trying to desperately keep under wraps. 

“The--The reaction time is too slow,” the first said, and Hythlodaeus thought their name was Iris. Some form of flower, perhaps. Gladiolus? No… Lilium, that’s right. “We’ve been over this, in order for the creature to achieve flight, it needs a higher reactive fuel than what 42a has. It would be just as dismal as our attempts with 38c, 89a and the like.” 

Lilium was seemingly done with the conversation and turned back to the Creation, grabbing the material off of the table. Daedalus’ hand shot out and grabbed Lilium’s wrist sharply, and Hythlodaeus could see what looked like claws on the fingertips as he wrenched Lilium’s hand to the side and caused the material to tumble out of their fingers. 

“Do not, unless you wish to return us all to the Star prematurely.” Daedalus hissed, and underneath that soul-flaring anger was fear. He ignored the way the rest of the room, Hythlodaeus included, flinched and stepped back. 

“My--My hand--” Lilium said, their voice hitched in pain. Daedalus practically flung it back at them, and they whimpered as they cradled it to their chest. “What do you mean, 42b wouldn’t--” 

“Are you naturally this stupid or is it deliberate?” Daedalus snapped, and flung and aethershield around the Creation that lay half finished to suspend it in time. “The only reason why 42b provides a higher rate of reaction is because it’s infused with lightning aether, meaning it seeks a grounding force.” 

Lilium paled. 

“Adding it to a creature designed for flight would cause a chain reaction inside the creature’s belly and make it explode from the inside out,” Daedalus hissed again. Hythlodaeus caught the barest hint of what looked like two sets of fangs in his mouth. “ Your desire for a quicker solution almost killed us all.”

Daedalus said nothing more as he grabbed the Creation and stormed out of the laboratory. Lilium stared after him, mouth agape, and still clung to their wrist tightly. Their breath hitched, and shiny wet tears rolled down their cheeks from underneath their mask. 

Hythlodaeus ignored how the others in the room went to comfort them, instead leaning back in his chair and watching as Daedalus stalked off. He squinted, and that strangelovely filter came over the world once more, showing every hue and color of the souls around him. His eyes were sharp, but even he couldn’t have seen how the Creation was doomed from that simple addition of materials. He didn’t know who this fellow student was, but … 

Midnight black, with a corona of dark purple moved through the halls, and away. He marked it in his memory, and made a note to find that color again.

So vampires can hear you if you say their name. What if d(a)emons shared that trait, like you'd be able to 'summon' them like the myths. But for them to hear it, you'd have to say the whole thing. Example:

"Vega. Stellar-formed, Congruent of D’Deridahn, bound in his Madrigal. Anacrusis of his Phrase."

Meaning, you'd have to know the d(a)emon very personally to be able to call out to them.

If that's the case: Caelum. Stellar-formed, Congruent of E'laetum, bound in his Madrigal. Please come home, we miss you

Hush EA spoilers

(also a whole lot of word vomit. and for once its not copied and pasted from texts i sent to my boyfriend)

I TOLD YALL I TOLD YALL VEGA WASNT DEAD!!

okay wow theres a LOT to unpack here. uhm.

so the general theory that demons dont go to Death when they die has been confirmed!! yippee!! their magic just gets scattered to the winds and it seems like its up to someone to stitch said magic back together in order to revive(?) the demon that was killed. yay!!

taking a moment to talk about Hush because HUSHH?? Hush freaking out about how he killed Vega and how Vega confused him was just. heart-breaking. omg. i was expecting many things today, but not Hush of all people having a breakdown. that really hit too close to home </3

now, Hush mentioned something when talking about Vega: he used the term "anacruses" to refer to our beloved manipulator. hello? sudden lore drop?? question mark??

more lore drops is Hush talking about how he met Vega before he was formed, and how he thinks he wasnt supposed to remember the demon, and i quote: "But a part of me, a tiny echo within me is made of those who made me, and that’s the part of me that knows him. Knows… Vega. The daemon before the demon. The voice before the song broke from the stave. I don’t think I’m supposed to remember him."

focusing on the "voice before the song broke from the stave" part; i looked up the term "anacruses", and what i find interesting is that the word "anacrusis" popped up. "anacrusis" has multiple meanings, but one of them caught my eye: "one or more unstressed notes before the first bar line of a piece or passage."

now, i dont know much about instrument lore, but (correct me if im wrong) this is referring to music. personally, i think this is really interesting (this may be the autism speaking), because we know that d(a)emons have some sort of connection to the spellsong. im sure Gavin or Hush maybe explained it once, i cant really remember. we also know that Hush is literally the silence in the spellsong. the plural of "anacrusis" is "anacruses". you can see where this is going.

we know that Vega is really old. we know he was around before the Cacophony, which makes me think that he was one of the first daemons to be created. like, "within the first ten" kind of first. Hush calling Vega "one of the Anacruses" has me thinking some things.

firstly, the term "Anacruses" may just be a sort of title for d(a)emons who were created before the Cacophony. this is plausible, and i think it would make sense. it could also refer to d(a)emons who were created before the existence of the spellsong, maybe?

we dont know much about the spellsong, other than that its this non-corporeal thing that d(a)emons and Hush have a connection to (and if we really want to reach, the Sovereigns as well). we know that every empowered person's core has a "voice" in the spellsong, and that if said person dies, their "voice" goes silent.

we dont know when it was created, or how it was created. but the definition of "anacrusis" got me thinking... maybe the "Anacruses" daemons are the ones who created the spellsong. its a bit of a reach (thats an understatement that a very long reach), but i think it's plausible. its like FNAF lore: if you dont think about it, it makes sense.

you must be thinking, "wow vinn thats a lot of word vomit! what are you trying to say?" what i said a few paragraphs ago: "Anacruses" just means "old demon" but with significant lore and meaning attached to it. thats it.

(i really like how Erik's brain works — props to him for working this into the possible spellsong lore)

i dont really have much to say about Hush saying he existed before he... well existed. what i take from that is that he could have been a non-corporeal being who physically couldnt take a physical form until very recently. whatever created him took parts of themself to make him. i dunno, im still trying to understand it myself.

Wait, what!? Not Sadism?? I thought Vega was one of the first Sadism Demon from pre-history? Why did he introduce himself as Gravity instead??

LOL! Glad to know that Vega is still Vega in terms of personality even without memories.

So what I'm understanding is that this Vega is from pre-history. He's young again in terms of memories. Him mentioning the alliance between de(a)mons and humans means the war against the Sovereigns. Huh. It makes sense why he's 'friendly' (as Vega can be) to Doc and cold?? Annoyance?? Towards Hush.

Also, on the topic of Warden...

They're gonna find them to try and help bring back most of Vega's memories. In a meta sense, Warden now has all the power in their unbalanced game. Before, Vega had the upper hand. NOT ANYMORE NOW! Warden could do something as hilarious as LIE or makeup stuff about Vega dnfjkdsf

On a more dangerous note, I doubt Warden knows all about Vega's original plan. Now that his memories are lost... and he was on the cusp of pulling off something HUGE... I think this is gonna bring trouble to them. A HUGE PROBLEM IF VEGA DOESN'T GET HIS MEMORIES BACK.

AND THEN IT BACK TO THEM BEING ENEMIES AGAIN, YAY :D
