American Gothic di Grant Wood è uno dei dipinti più iconici dell'arte americana. Ispirato alla pittura tedesca e fiamminga, il quadro rappresenta un uomo e una donna (nella realtà si ispirò alla figura del suo dentista e di sua sorella) nei tipici abiti contadini e con il forcone a tre punte. Sul retro una tipica casa dell'Iowa. Il quadro dapprima fu accolto da qualche critica, ma ben presto divenne un simbolo di valori di rinascita e forza incrollabile dei pionieri americani, in risposta alla Grande Depressione.
