Kaiju Week in Review (January 28-February 3, 2024)
youtube
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition's Godzilla DLC is now available. I joined Wikizilla's stream of it yesterday as a spectator and found it quite entertaining (especially when @squid-in-a-party-hat switched to Creative Mode and started summoning mini-kaiju). I'll post the highlight reel from that stream when it's finished. The main hub of this DLC is a combination movie theater/gallery; each of the four screens lets you access a different minigame. The first is based on the original film and has you rescuing civilians and just trying to survive as Godzilla trashes Tokyo. The second transforms you into Godzilla and pits you and your allies against various kaiju from the first three series. The third tasks you with defending Tokyo against Shin Godzilla, with each defensive phase featuring a different form. The fourth just has you taking photos of the battles in Godzilla vs. Kong (with the Tasmian Sea fight replaced by Godzilla barging into Kong's dome). I found the second and third to be the most interesting, but it's dismaying that only the third really takes advantage of these games being in Minecraft. You scrounge items, build barricades, lay down TNT, trade with NPCs, summon agents, fire blood coagulation potion into Godzilla's mouth from a crossbow... it's a lot more involved than the others.
In further Godzilla video game news, the Heisei MOGUERA and a crystal-hurling SpaceGodzilla variation have joined Godzilla Battle Line, the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers mobile game is teasing its original monsters, and Dave the Diver of all things announced a free PlayStation-exclusive Godzilla DLC for May.
Tumblr media
Here's a rare sequel to an IDW Godzilla miniseries. Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants will boast the same writer (Frank Tieri) and artist (Inaki Miranda) as its predecessor. The logline:
The sequel to last summer’s smash miniseries! Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda reunite to explore the conspiracy that led to Sir Francis Drake hiding his treasure on Monster Island! Who are the Sons of Giants, and what is their mission? More importantly, what is their connection to Godzilla and the other monsters? This series shows us how it all came to be, how Godzilla was discovered by the leaders of the world, and how it changed history forever!
Despite the Roman numerals, sounds like a prequel. I still think there's something off about any Godzilla story set before the Atomic Age, but the Sons of Giants were the most interesting part of the original Here There Be Dragons, and historical figures encountering the King of the Monsters is always amusing.
Tumblr media
Naturally, Funko is making a line of Pops for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The standout is the Amazon-exclusive figure of a sleeping Godzilla; I also love how Shimo looks like she's yakking. Monogram also revealed the lineup for its sixth wave of Toho Godzilla bag clips, as well as a GxK set. Highlights of the former are a curled-up Final Wars Anguirus, a Simeon, and Zilla; the latter is notable for including a previously-unrevealed monster called a Parrot Frog.
youtube
Tokyo's Hibiya neighborhood has long played host to Godzilla statues: first the Kawakita Godzilla, then Shin. Now they're getting a new three-meter statue of the original '54 Godzilla. It emits smoke at night, the mouth glows, and there seems to be some kind of AR app through which he fires atomic breath at you. Despite it being a 70th anniversary installation, however, it'll only be in Hibiya until March 10. I'm guessing that won't be the last we see of it.

So we finally went to see the next chapter of the MonsterVerse GodzillaxKong: The New Empire. I was super excited to go see this because as a Godzilla fan I have been enjoying this series. Also yes there was plenty of collectable goodies for this movie which of course you can see here.
So as for the movie itself I would say I pretty much loved it I thought it was great myself. I loved all the monster action and all the smashing and crashing. You can tell how these movies evolved from the 2014 Godzilla to now being in the 2014 movie it was very I'd say human centric and as they went on the monsters pretty much took center stage. I feel that the human involvement in this movie was very minimal and were there when they needed to be. and that Warner Bros was all "they want monsters we'll give them monsters!" because I feel this was like 85% monster action!
Now with the story I do feel much like the previous Godzilla vs Kong that the story is focused more on Kong then Godzilla. Kong is the main character in this movie and does get the most screen time. but as for the story itself if kinda is telling two at the same time a Kong Story and a Godzilla story and going back and forth until the 2 meet up again. I don't know the timeline of this I don't remember if they mention anything but I think it does take place shortly after the previous movie maybe a year or 2?
Your basic story is this Kong is living in the Hollow Earth while Godzilla is above. Kong is still lonely believing he is the last of his kind until he finds a hidden underground area with many like himself but it is ruled by a ruthlessly despotic ape known only as "The Skar King" Kong of course comes into conflict with him and gets the upper hand for the moment until the Skar King unleashes his ultimate weapon a kiju named Shimo who has a devastating ice attack causing Kong to retreat and seek help from the only one who can match Shimo's power the King of the Monsters Godzilla! after a short scuffle Godzilla agrees to Help Kong and the Monster action goes into full swing!
Now I like I said I love this movie I thought it was every exciting and very fun and delved more into the mythology of the characters of Godzilla and Kong I loved how they introduced some more new monsters like The Skar King and the little minikong Suko who was a real bastard when you meet him but of course became a friend of Kong's as Kong earned his trust. I also love the return of Mothra as well. The animation and character work for this movie was impressive too especially with Kong and the other ape characters as well as Godzilla who seemed to have a greater sense of motion in this movie as you can see him both running and jumping.
Also like I said the monster action is amazing Ken Watanabe's character Dr. Ishiro Serizawa said it best in the first movie of this series back in 2014 "Let them Fight" and this movie takes that to heart and lets them fight! the fight in Egypt is alot of fun but its pretty much not until they get to Rio and then everything goes crazy! but it is so much fun to watch and I would say it is very satisfying all the smashing and crashing and buildings going flying as the monsters tear everything apart.
but in the end this is just an amazingly fun movie. There is plenty of action and its exciting and goes deeper into the lore and I feel it is having lots of fun expanding on this world and this universe. One thing with these movies is I would like to see more classic characters appear like Anguirus and maybe Gigan but I also like how they are creating newer monster for these movies too. I'm just enjoying everything in these movies and loving it all! but yeah if you are enjoying the MonsterVerse as much as I am then I would highly recommend this one.

So....3 announcements on atab
As I mentioned earlier the inspirations for the story are a lot of indie stuff like helluva boss, lackadaisy, hazbin etc(don't wrap me up in the drama, I could not care less)
But also for the kaiju tone and stuff like that, here are the main inspirations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of these Kaiju films are easily my favorites in the genre. Shusuke Kaneko, and Takashi Yamazaki are some of my favorite kaiju directors and their movies have shaped the kaiju genre as a whole tremendously, Godzilla vs mothra is here for nostalgia reasons mostly and because I think it handles the lore of monsters pretty well too.
Now, what's a Godzilla/daikaiju story without some monsters. The roster already included Godzilla, Gigan, Megalon, titanosaurus, Mothra,Anguirus, and Rodan but I think that there's another kaiju icon that needs...some work. The ion dragon from Monarch legacy of monsters was cool and all....but it gave me false hopes of a sonic super dragon showing up. So joining the ranks of the kaiju in atab are these fine folks: Moguera, Barugon, gyaos, legion
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
....and one more, taking on a more villainous approach than the usual benevolent guardian role he usually has
Tumblr media
Gamera
Each kaiju will be adapted in my own way that I think would be interesting for atab. also me saying that Gamera is gonna be more antagonistic presence doesn't mean he's gonna be THE villian of atab. I'm taking an approach similar to the titans in the monsterverse, where they are just creatures from an age far older and far more merciless than the age of man.
And now for the 3rd announcement, production on the first story of atab's universe is starting, I want it to come out in early to mid March, it's gonna be focusing on the early days of the warden's and fittingly enough, the origin of several Kaiju(primarily Godzilla, Gamera)
I hope you enjoy! There's a lot more to come for this^^

We've got Ruby in all the era's of Godzilla but what about Nerissa? How would she function in them?
Oh ho ho ho. Rubs hands evilly. I've been thinking about this all day. With bonus Chelsea too!
Showa : Nerissa is a mermaid goddess vaguely associated with Megalon. Unlike the big bug, Nerissa's actually intelligent and ambitious who wants to TAKE OVER THE WORLD. She's also the most human design wise as a nod to the rubber suits. Basically, a human body with fins and large mermaid tail on the back. Chelsea's her evil summoner who's able to reawaken her but it's left ambiguous whether or not they're related.
Heisei/Millennium : Originally a human in power, Nerissa struck a deal with the Vortaak to aid them in their goal of global domination in return for more power, aka being turned into a giant free-willed kaiju, and acts as the human big bad at one point before being transformed into a giant fish monster. Design is still more human than mermaid and she fights Ruby only to be killed by her. Nerissa's later resurrected by the Vortaak as Mecha-Nerissa with a burning hatred for Ruby. Chelsea's her human daughter that went against Nerissa's plan and worked to stop her, eventually forming a bond with the giant monster Ruby. Ruby protects her from harm and other giant monsters.
Monsterverse : It's left ambiguous but heavily implied this Nerissa is of extraterrestrial origin not unlike Ghidorah to explain the more human aspect of her design. She was worshipped thousands of years ago by ancient man and upon waking up from hibernation, was furious over being forgotten. She attacks coastal areas and cities until the inhabitants start to worship her once more, which obviously doesn't settle well with Ruby. Their time has come and gone so they fight a lot. Monsterverse! Nerissa is more akin to her canon giant form being more mermaid like than before. She's still able to achieve land travel through little back-fin feet-like legs but it's pretty awkward for her. Chelsea's a monster here this time, being Nerissa's spawn, but far more amicable compared to her mother. Like her, she's more adapt to water than land but can still get around. More or less becomes the Anguirus to Godzilla's Ruby.
Shin : Foolishly seeking to understand Shin Godzilla, US scientists take his DNA and start experimenting with it and even incorporating other kinds of DNA (human included). The result? Nerissa. A bizarre human/fish...mermaid...godzilla...thing. She devoured the staff one by one and overtook the ocean facility she was made in. Like Monsterverse, her design is more mermaid this time. Nerissa can also travel on land but instead of having fin-like feet, they're grotesque under-developed human legs. She revels in her monstrousness, power, and is deceptively intelligent. One wouldn't be wrong in thinking she's using fear to bring humanity to its knees. Chelsea was spawned from Nerissa but was adapted more for land travel. She's basically one big homage to Showa! Nerissa, being mostly human with mermaid features design wise. Unlike her spawner Chelsea is far more tragic and bemoans her existence as a freak of nature. Finding Ruby and knowing she too is unsure of her own existence brings her comfort and the two start working together, ultimately putting a stop to Nerissa as she continues to grow bigger and stronger.

Godzillathon - The Showa Era
This month I started a Godzillathon, a series of reviews of all the King of the Monsters movies from Toho Studios. In my Letterboxd you have the reviews with more detail (in Spanish), but since I just finished with the Showa era, I thought I'd share some brief comments here.
Tumblr media
Godzilla (1954) - ★★★★★ (10/10)
The original. An undisputed classic. A masterpiece. Terrifying, embracing its idea of the monster as a metaphor for the horror of the atomic bomb and its consequences. Top 5 of the whole kaiju eiga genre.
Godzilla Raids Again (1955) - ★★ (4/10)
In hardly less than a year we went from metaphorical horror to the most generic monster mash. It wouldn't be a problem if it weren't so bland/boring. Tremendous downgrade. Anguirus is cool, though.
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) - ★★★ (6/10)
Basically a Kong movie with Godzilla as a guest antagonist (the real villain is capitalism). It has things that have aged very badly (the racial representation and use of blackface) and unbalanced pacing. It is saved by its last ten minutes. The US cut adds extra hilarity.
Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) - ★★★★ (8/10)
Mothra is made of awesomeness. Godzilla is a charismatic asshole. Once again, the real villain is capitalism. The main metaphor gives way  now to a satire of the Japanese economic boom of the 1960s and its ecological impact. Fun from start to finish.
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) - ★★★½ (7/10)
We lose the satire and social commentary, but we gain an iconic villain and embrace space opera and sci-fi without qualms. Fun monster mash and Godzilla's first step in his transition to an anti-hero status. He's still a jerk, but he's our jerk.
Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) - ★★★ (6/10)
The spectacle wins out over any subtext, which has all but disappeared. It introduces what will be a recurring element of alien invaders making use of giant monsters. Memorable for being overall a fun film and perhaps the craziest of what we've seen so far, but not much more. Also, Godzilla dances.
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) - ★★½ (5/10)
Originally a Kong movie rewritten for Godzilla and it shows. Tropical jungle island adventure. Villains that could come out of a Bond movie. Godzilla in full heroic mode. GIANT LOBSTER. Fun, but doesn't leave much of a lasting impression, although Ebirah has its fans.
Son of Godzilla (1967) - ★★ (4/10)
Not as horribly bad as I feared, but not a good movie. Horrible design decisions, unremarkable antagonists (except for the giant spider because it’s a giant spider), and abusive monster parenting. It tries to squeeze in a bit of environmental commentary, but it's dull and infantilizing.
Destroy All Monsters (1968) - ★★★ (6/10)
The Avengers of the franchise. I wanted to like this movie more than I did. Two very uneven first and second acts of a story with a recycled plot (aliens + monsters under mind control) saved by a resolution that is memorable as fuck. You almost feel sorry for Ghidorah. Almost.
All Monsters Attack (1969) - ★½ (3/10)
The absolute low point of the franchise. It's like a bad dream/recap episode. Tries to do some slice of life with the monsters as a metaphor for childhood anxieties in a plot that shoehorns gratuitous kidnappings into it. Good intention but disastrous execution.
Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) - ★★★★ (8/10)
A return to form! Hedorah is an excellent metaphor for uncontrolled pollution and contamination. A bit dissonant, with Godzilla as a kid friendly hero (he flies!) in a terrifying plot, with body horror, human casualties in large numbers and an apocalyptic feeling. And that poor kitty...
Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) - ★★★ (6/10)
Recycled plot of aliens (cockroaches!) using a giant monster. AGAIN. But it's fun and Gigan is memorable as one of Toho's most extravagant kaiju designs: anthropomorphic alien chicken with cool visor instead of eyes and knives. How many knives? All the knives.
Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) - ★★ (4/10)
What the fuck. Total drift to Saturday morning cartoon standards, but poorly done. It's basically a pilot episode for Jet Jaguar, which is endearingly crappy. The plot? The usual, but swap aliens for ancient underwater civilization. Godzilla looks almost too adorable. Note, it actually has a message: nuclear testing is bad.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - ★★★½ (7/10)
Twentieth anniversary and introduction of an iconic villain! And the plot... Guess what the plot is? Take a fucking guess. The aliens are now gorillas, just because. At least it's well executed, it's good fun. Also, King Caesar. I like King Caesar, even though he feels like a discount version of Mothra at times. Surprisingly gory in the fights.
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - ★★★½ (7/10)
Direct sequel to the previous one. The end of the Showa era is a fun but a bit uneven film. Too much focus on a boring Titanosaurus (one of Toho's blandest kaiju designs). Good balance of monster fights and a human plot with touches of humanism and trans-humanism, and a tragic sacrificial ending.

Biola: Monster Genesis character profile
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Godzilla
This creature, named for the similar-looking yokai Gojira (short for gorogoro-kujira, meaning "thundering whale") of Japanese folklore, is a unique lineage of derived thyreophoran dinosaurs, branching off from basal forms such as Scelidosaurus and Jakapil kanikura, that evolved a semiaquatic marine niche as they survived into the modern day (among quite a few non-avian dinosaurs to have done so in this universe). This lifestyle enabled its housecat-to-dog-sized ancestors to become giants, with Godzilla himself standing at a towering 50 meters in height, that fed on squid, whales, giant crustaceans like Ganimes and Ebirah, and fish in deep diving ventures. They are able to stay underwater for extended periods of time due not just to holding their breath and closing a palatal valve, but due to an organ derived from an offshoot of the crop that functions as a second lung, absorbing oxygen from the water much like a turtle's cloacal respiration (water can also be reguritated from this chamber along with a mixture of previously-digested material for a defensive or aggressive display much like fulmar chicks). Additionally, like the bacteria in an anglerfish lure and firefly squid, this species has a mutual endosymbiosis with dinoflagellate algae that live within their dorsal plates, allowing them to bioluminesce for displays a feature only rivalled by their vocalizations, with the species having a language complete with legends and stories passed down from generation to generation
In the almost 70 years since this individual, the first kaiju known to mankind, made its appearance, it has been the only documented member of its species and there's a good reason why he's the only one we've seen...
Godzilla was the top male in his particular colony. He had vibrant colors and plenty of scars to display his victories and long-held position, including a chipped beak. As one would expect from a top male, he has had plenty of offspring during his tenure, with more on the way. until his island home was baptized by the atom.
With the atomic bomb testing, the beast that would soon be known as Godzilla was charred, scarred, and irradiated. Despite his previous radiance having been taken away from him, such scars would have been something to be proud of, as it would be shown that he was strong enough to survive this cataclysm... were he not the only survivor of this cataclysm. Indeed, He was the only one of his kind left. He was alone. He was enraged. Knowing that iron whales were present when it happened, he left his home in search of retribution and attacked the first boat he saw: the unrelated Eikō Maru. After another attack revealing Godzilla's existence to mankind and subsequent depth charges in a fruitless attempt to kill him, he then ravaged Tokyo, Japan on November 3rd, 1954. Having wreaked his vengance, he then went to rest in Tokyo Bay before being driven off from the area in Tokyo Bay in which he was resting by the Oxygen Destroyer, a device that used a catalyzed reaction to convert water and the oxygen dissolved within it into large quantities of hydrogen peroxide, irritating the beast enough to make him understand the message: "you are not welcome here."
over the next seven decades, He would resurface and be faced by either humanity or another kaiju he was interacting with, from Anguirus the following year to the primate-like Gabara in 1962 to a mysterious, orange-and-black insectoid designated as "Gigamoth" by Typhon. However, one day he found something different. Having heard a cry that was unmistakibly one of his species (albeit in an uncanny valley way), he came to the remote Odo Island where it originated, but there he found not another of his kind, but... something. This figure, like a tree with a face and arms, could only be compared by him to a spirit in his people's folklore who is split amongst all plant life; this could only be called a "Biollante". After observing the Biollante, he left, but later that night, he heard the Biollante calling to him again from the beach of Odo Island, this time more intently. After coming to this Biollante, getting to know what she was (apparently she, going by the name "Erika", was a member of the tiny things that had scorned him for many years who had also had plant essence and recently the essence of Godzilla infused into her), and taking her to hunt an Ebirah for them to share as a meal (Erika was starting to get hungry), Erika asked for the reason behind his attack on Japan all those years ago. With drawings on the sand as an aid (despite Erika being able to understand Godzilla's language in her new state, there was still a bit of a vernacular barrier betwixt the two), Godzilla found something from a human (or at least a thing that was once half human) that he had never seen from one before.... understanding.
Tumblr media
(art by @artmakerproductions) ... then, it was apparent that mankind's recklessness with scientific progress, something that made the now-irradiated dinosaur simultaneously the last of his kind and the first one like him, had inadvertently made his existence a little less lonely

Since I doubt Toho would let you raise Godzilla, here’s the kaiju I’d expect
If we did get a crossover DLC with a Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher sequel, I’d expect like Ultraman he would unplayable as Godzilla “cannot be tamed”.
Still I think you could have fun by making Godzilla a special errantry trainer., able to teach kaiju techniques from the movies such as
undefined
youtube
undefined
youtube
(a support move that alters stats, obviously)
undefined
dailymotion
and the  Energy pulse punch (Gabara and Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla inspired).
Now here’s my ideas for trainable monsters, and how I would justify them to Toho.
I would imagine unlike the Ultra Kaiju subbreeds would be less texture swaps and more new textures with similar themes to other fusion component, and a naming system with new adjetives in front of monster type. So  subbreeds, if allowed would probably reference past toy releases with colors that differed from film.
Godzilla Jr
Tumblr media
The adolescent or young-adult  form of Godzilla’s less mutated (at first) adopted kid from the 90s film. Spent days in imprinting on humans lab so thematically better for being raised than a full-blown Godzilla while still letting players have some sort of Godzilla.
Could have Holly note it resembles a cross between Godzilla and a Dino from monster rancher.
And could use his “atomic bubbles” from his “Little Godzila” stage of development as a withering attack
Tumblr media
And their psychic telepathy powers (shown by eyes glowing red) in their appearance as baby could inspire support-techniques
Titanosaurus
Tumblr media
[my translation from  Definitive edition Godzilla Monster Illustration Super Encyclopedia (TV Magazine Deluxe 28)]
A human controlled Kaiju from the 80s , said to have been a peaceful creature prior to the mad scientist researching them turned abusive and teamed up with aliens and sent the mind controlled sea monster to attack Japan alongside Mechagodzilla.. A mirror to Godzilla, a natural prehistoric creature turned into a rampaging beast by malice rather than negligence.
Can create electromagnetic whirlwinds with tailfan giving it range, something that one of my other runner up choices, Anguirus, was lacking.
Those antennae by the way, are implied by some possible concept art as being artificially implanted into the brain, or at the very least have mind control implants inserted into their bases. So some transmission-icon support techniques as well maybe
Jet Jaguar (Singular Point)
Fits very well in “raising a monster”” thematically, being a product of experiences,. And the A.I system it uses was intended for more than just robot piloting, and always demands a name from its owner once installed.
Tumblr media
There also color variants as basis for sub-breeds from an old puppet show called Godzilla Island.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anguirus (added)
Tumblr media
Anguirurus of the showa era is one of the most easy monsters for humanity to deal with despite his power and fighting spirit, the two individuals in the Showa Era can be lured away by flares or repelled with military just making clear not welcome.
So works well having a human “coach”
Could be given a trait that gives a chance of causing recoil damage when pushed away by other kaiju to represent spikes.
While no projectiles, Anguirus has range with a relatively harmless sonic howl in Godzilla Raids again that can slowly destroy wooden buildings, could be a withering attack that lowers the Guts/Fighting spirit of the opponent..  For other long range attacks see his  jumping attack from when fought mechagodzilla, and the backwards leap used against Ghidrah in Godzilla vs Gigan.
Spikes could be represented a trait/cookie that sometimes causes inflicts recoil damage when pushed back by the opponent
Longer reaches
Mothra (Monsterverse ) - Kinda reaching
Hardest to fit in actually do to the “Mothra does not rage” stance Toho has taken in past videogames. I feel giving Mothra Imago a “never rampages” trait might be potentially gamebreaking. And they might state that the adult form of Mothra having tantrums is out of character for a creature meant to be mature and wise.
Still this incarnation has most easy version of Mothra to fit into the combat system, and implied to have human priestesses/caretakers in past.
Tumblr media
Metamorphoses system similar to Wurm in Monster Rancher 2.
(Honestly wondering if new designs combining personality and features of multiple iterations rather than being faithful to the screen like the Ultra Kaiju might be the best bet for the crossover. Because Showa Mothra could definitely tantrum,  but lacks a larval form  that’s upright enough. And Angui)
Mechagodzilla (Showa)
Feels less likely, but I feel like it could also be a story event villain you unlock by defeating
Tumblr media
Gigan and Megalon
I oddly  suspect these two would be the hardest to get approval for despite fitting the tone well. Gigan is alien-controlled and Megalon despite being worshipped as a god is well, directed  like a toddler by worshippers. They wave shiny thing in his face to get him pointed in the right direction
However, unlike the others they don’t really have name changes and have pretty much always been unique individual rather than a species name or going through name changes from developing and growing. (Gigan Miles and Gigan Rex from the 2022 short film feel unlikely as a justification )

godzilla: legends #1 (2011)
this was a cute little story with anguirus as the focus character! it's heisei era movies-adjacent since destoroyah is the main antagonist, though instead of g-force japan is defended from kaiju attacks by the kdf (one imagines it stands for kaiju defense force). it also doesn't really fit neatly into the events of the movie, but that's alright! like with gangsters & goliaths, i'm just glad to see things starting to resemble the toho universe more!
i also really appreciated how anguirus was characterized here. i'm very much not a fan of godzilla raids again, but anguirus is nevertheless one of my favorite characters, and i really wish he got more love in the later movies. and i loved how the one soldier related to anguirus because she identifies with underdogs.
really solid stuff here!

Kaiju Week in Review (October 30-November 5, 2022)
This week actually brought more news than I was expecting... and I was expecting a lot!
Tumblr media
Takashi Yamazaki will direct—or rather, has been directing—the next live-action Toho Godzilla film, which started shooting in March under the working title Blockbuster Monster Movie. (Gigant called it!) He also wrote the script and will supervise the visual effects, a level of control never before afforded a Godzilla director. Yamazaki previously directed the King of the Monsters in the cold open for Always: Sunset on Third Street 2 and the Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle attraction, but he's also been extremely prolific as a director of visually extravagant genre movies, including Returner, Space Battleship Yamato, the live-action Parasyte films, and Lupin III: The First.
Little is known about the story, save for the time period: early postwar Japan, specified in a casting call as 1945-47. That's rare territory for a Godzilla story. I believe Godzilla: Awakening is the only other example, and that was a globe-trotting adventure in which the Big G never set foot on Japanese soil. So it promises to be something truly fresh for his 69th anniversary. Nice.
Tumblr media
The main attraction of Toho's Godzilla Fest livestream was the event's third tokusatsu short, Fest Godzilla 3: Gigan Attacks. These things get better every year; compared to Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Gigan Attacks had a bigger set, a new suit for the enemy monster and a much nicer-looking suit for Godzilla, sharper fight choreography, and more intricate VFX. If they keep getting longer too, maybe Toho will accidentally make another tokusatsu feature by the 2030s.
For the next few days, you can watch it on YouTube here (starts at 6:57:00 and is followed by a ton of behind-the-scenes footage). After the archived stream gets banished, find it on archive.org.
Tumblr media
I kind of love when animation makes kaiju lighter and bouncier than they should be for the sake of slicker fight scenes, and the other Godzilla Fest short, Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, certainly delivered on that front. And if you've always wanted Toho to revisit the Heisei continuity, there are a few hints that this Godzilla is Junior, including the long-overdue return of Megumi Odaka as the narrator. (As a Wikizilla bureaucrat, I am obligated to add that these are only hints, akin to the way IDW's Godzilla comics will sometimes allude to the films without officially being in continuity with them.) Assuming this is Junior, he certainly does his old man proud.
Tumblr media
An onslaught of new Movie Monster Series figures were revealed this week: Godzilla '84, Gamera '96, two Shin Ultraman variants, Zarab's Ultraman disguise, and Mefilas. A site called Awesome Collector also opened preorders for Manda '04, Baragon '65, Ebirah '66, Hedorah '04, Godzilla '04, and King Ghidorah '91, due in February or March 2023. No images for them yet, but they foretold the MMS Salunga figure in the past. Finally, Showcase Daikaiju claims that the Godziban versions of Rodan and Anguirus will be shipping out next month. I'm more excited for those than the ones we got total confirmation of, to be honest. Though the Godzilla '84 looks more on-model than my NECA...
Oh yeah, there's an S.H.MonsterArts of the original Gigan on the way too. Not my thing, but nice to see them remember the Showa era exists.
Tumblr media
Buried in a Hollywood Reporter article about Blockbuster Monster Movie is the revelation that Godzilla Island will be coming to the English Godzilla YouTube channel (GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO) later this month. Yes, the one from the late 90s where Bandai toys portray all the monsters. This will be its first official English translation; as someone who's watched the whole thing raw, I'm excited to finally learn what the hell's happening in some of those story arcs. The special effects are the least wild part of the show, truly.

Netflix released a full trailer for Troll which looks pretty spectacular; I did not realize the film had this much money to play with. Roar Uthaug (The Wave, the Tomb Raider remake) is the director. It's always nice to see another giant monster movie set in Europe—how many have there been since the glory days of Reptilicus, Konga, and Gorgo? Okay, maybe "Konga" and "glory days" don't belong anywhere near each other... the point stands.

O'Shea Jackson Jr. has been writing the pilot script for a G-Team animated series with Toho Kingdom media relations director Chris Mirjahangir. (In case you forgot, that's Monarch's military branch, callously discarded in Godzilla vs. Kong like most of the world-building in King of the Monsters; Jackson played Barnes.) No story details yet, beyond plans to include Biollante and Gigan. Bear in mind this is far from a done deal; the strategy seems to be going public early to convince Toho and Legendary the demand is there.

Fathom Events screenings of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla grossed $335,000 from 727 theaters on Thursday, good for fifth place that day. Apart from the introduction by Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota (who I hear was very wooden), Fathom included last year's Godzilla vs. Hedorah short and some behind-the-scenes footage of said short which I'm not sure has ever been released before. Thankfully, a couple people recorded that part.
The film itself had some frame rate issues, at least at certain theaters. The video quality also apparently dropped off whenever there were any English supers. The subtitles used the (superior) script from the old TriStar DVD, though a handful of typos suggested they were retyped. Still, people seemed thrilled at getting to catch a Toho Godzilla movie in theaters, and I can't blame them (G-Fest has spoiled me rotten).

Evangelion Unit-01 has officially arrived in Godzilla Battle Line, with the Fourth Angel (called Sachiel in the original show) to follow mid-month. She's armed with a Gatling gun and a few neat abilities, like an AT field reducing the damage she takes while she's rushing and resistance to self-destructing units like Burning Godzilla and Zetton. Be forewarned that Shinji screams in agony whenever an Eva Leader loses a match. Battle Line also gave Kiryu an Evangelion skin—and the ability to evolve into the Modified version from Tokyo S.O.S. after being defeated twice in a match. Also, GigaBash released a teaser for their upcoming Godzilla DLC, and announced that three more Toho monsters would join the game as well. Be sure to feign surprise when they turn out to be King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra.

I'll close with yet another plug for another kaiju obscurity brought to light by @spacehunter-m. This one's the 1958 German version of Godzilla Raids Again with English subtitles. It's a more straightforward dub than Gigantis; no banana oil, fire monsters, or unrelenting narration in this one. It also looks better than the HD transfer Toho has been trotting out for years, despite being in SD!

I mentioned on Godzilla that I was going to do four of these and see how it went. Probably obvious that Ghidorah kind of has to be on the list, so I was just going for the kaiju cast of Godzilla vs Gigan. However I've felt slightly weird about not doing Mothra but figured that there should be another aggressive enemy kaiju for balance. Someone asked for Biollante and you know, I think she has great potential so I'll expand it to six monsters for now. "Hero-verse" Anguirus Not a big variation from the Showa design, just taking advantage of being drawn and not needing to accommodate human proportions and turn him into a poorly proportioned quadruped. Overall there's a little tweaking to try and give him something of a loyal dog sidekick vibe. His shell is also a ways more turtle-like because I really like turtle shells and use any half excuse to make something more like a turtle shell. Anguirus was originally intended be the main support character for Godzilla but he was initially over-designed and after his first couple of appearances animators complained about the complexity of his shell and spike combo. This caused him to be hastily written out and replaced with other benign monsters for a few episodes that are known for being a bit janky writing-wise and displaying strange characterization for monsters like Rodan and Mothra. However the design was eventually fixed and the character re-introduced. As a result Rodan undergoes a very rapid character shift and Mothra is treated as though being introduced for the first time a little later. Fan theories go from alternate realities, out of order episode airings and suspiciously aimed amnesia. "Horror-verse" Anguirus Mostly pulls from his appearance in Singular Point but there's references to everything from injuries recieved in various media, Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee and the abandoned idea of a splitting shell in Godzilla Raids Again. While a giant prehistoric reptile set loose in the modern era has often been depicted as a destructive event, it's hard to paint it as gross out or gory horror so it took some thinking here. Anguirus is well known for being a stubborn creature, applauded among some western fans, and showing up again in spite of dying in his first appearance. Therefore, horror Anguirus has enhanced healing fueling the never give up attitude, even apparent death is just a delay. However his healing is flawed, the initial tissue is incomplete and merely enough to stop bleeding but then as the process continues the tissue is erroneously replaced with armor or claw. Anguirus sports several patches of sprouting bone armor, claws and teeth from the areas he's been wounded in the distant past. More recent injuries like the lower torso wounds from Godzilla, the neck and shoulder wounds from Gigan, and the jaw injury from what seems to have been another bout with Godzilla are all still partway through the healing process and bony material can bee seen emerging. Another apparent death saw his thagomizer being claimed as a trophy by a robotic adversary only for Anguirus to ressurect once again and begin growing a new club of much more random spikes. Anguirus lacks true energy attacks like Godzilla and other kaiju, but is capable of producing a roar so loud it generates a shock-wave. If it raises its shell it can vibrate it at intense speeds and seemingly harmonize with its roar to amplify the effects. Humans and animals at our scale can easily be killed some distance away from Anguirus' threat display alone. The tissues and tendrils exposed when its shell is lifted seem to serve some other purpose in making Anguirus hyper aware of its surroundings, the most commonly accepted theory is that these organs feel and smell the air with great sensitivity allowing Anguirus to track things that it doesn't seem should be able to, however the odd crackpot will insist that Anguirus's predictive abilities are too great for that to be the explanation and hypothesize the creature is somehow seeing the future. The retort to that is easy, surely if the creature knew the future it would get wounded much less. All in all Anguirus is one of the more benign kaiju but can still cause intense destruction in its wake.

GODZILLA MOVIE MARATHON: Godzilla vs Gigan (1972)
Tumblr media
We're really in the thick of it now, neck deep in the Champion series where budgets barely covered the catering bill, and god can you feel it.
The human element is laughably bad, another Goji movie to throw to the pile of forgettable plots meant just to be fast forwarded through. It's another alien invasion, directly meant to just rip off Invasion of Astro Monster, but this time the aliens don't even have cool costumes or flying saucers. It's like a sitcom, the entire movie takes place on, like, four sets. There's half a dozen aliens here attempting to take over the world, it's really not all that threatening or engaging. The whole movie has the energy of one of those cheap Hanna-Barbera cartoon episodes stretched to an hour. It's remarkably boring.
At least we get some good Kaiju scenes, right? Only if you like most of their runtime being stock footage with this horrible tint put over the top to try and make it look like night to match the original scenes. It's painful, genuinely.
The saving grace is our good man Gigan, though I argue most people know and love him from the next movie after this. Not only does he have a striking and unique design, but he has some great characterization, sadistically beating and taunting Godzilla and brutally slashing the good Kaiju to bits with bright red cartoon blood and everything.
It's also nice to see Anguirus again, this is the movie that turned him into "Godzilla's best buddy" that's a common characterization in the fandom. He even gets some good moments, like backwards slamming into Ghidorah with his spikes.
Speaking of Ghidorah, poor guy does not want to be here. If you cut out all the reused stock footage, Ghidorah literally does nothing but stand there. Mainly because the suit was so old and required so many people to move it that the budget didn't allow it to do much. Still, him just standing in the sidelines, refusing to help Gigan is hilarious. I love when Gigan tries to do a little claw slap but Ghidorah just ignores him and when they start arguing right in the middle of the fight. It all comes across as Gigan thinking they're closer friends than they actually are, it's genuinely funny.
So, this movie should sit around the same score as the others of its type right? Bad human plot but fun monster action usually comes out as mid, but I genuinely can't even give it that. The monster scenes in this movie are mostly boring too, they're so full of stock footage and awkwardly shot that I just ended up zoning out. The most fun I had while watching this movie was when my recliner fell over.
It's just bad, there's some good moments here and there but it's a tiny fraction of what's mainly a boring as tar experience. It gets a 3/10 from me, but luckily I don't think the series will reach a low this bad for at least a couple decades, so it's uphill from here.

[ questions from this post ]
101-110 - FUTURE
🌟 Are you engaged/would you get engaged? Describe/Show a picture of your ring.  we aren't.. not yet anyway :))) we've been together for less than a year and it feels really early to make that move but i think we both definitely think about it anyway.. i feel like he'd be the one to propose and i'm sure he'd plan something big and special
🌟 Are you married/would you get married? Describe/Show the aesthetic of your wedding. nope, and i'm not sure! personally i'm not the biggest fan of marriage, specifically the whole performative ceremony thing ?? in theory it's very cute but the idea of being in front of people while i'm saying my vows and talking so intimately to him is Scary to me.. but if we get married then i would want it to be a very small gathering of just close friends/family, not really fancy at all.
🌟 What does your ideal home look like together?  eclectic, warm, cozy, lots of neutral shades with pops of color thrown in, accent walls with vintage wood paneling, healthy and thriving plants everywhere, LOTS of natural sunlight, it's tidy but still full of little knick knacks that we've collected over the years.. there's a constant feeling of comfort and safety, it smells Amazing all the time despite the pets, several polaroids that we've taken are lining the shelves in frames, little sticky-note love notes are still hanging around in various hiding places either because they've been forgotten or we don't like to throw them away, there's always a record playing in the living room.. it's literally perfect
🌟 Do you have/want kids? If not, would you have/want pets?  we do Not want kids LOL... we do, however, have/want pets! currently we have just his bearded dragon but we'd love to get a cat, and maybe a couple geckos and a snake 🥺 we love animals so so so much
🌟 If you have/want kids or pets, how would you name them?  diego's beardie is lovingly named anguirus, i've already told him that if/when we get a cat its name will be oliver.. we don't know on the others, we figure a name will present itself to us eventually when we get a new pet
🌟 If you could give advice to yourselves when you started, what would you say to each other?  get over yourselves HFKLDSHGDS.. for me: calm down, trust your heart this time, let him in and allow yourself to fall for him because the faster you do the quicker you'll be in his arms 🥰 and for him: go easy, don't overwhelm her with your desires, be Patient and Understanding, things will turn out just fine
🌟 What do you look forward to the most in the future of this relationship? as of right now (december 1st '22) i'm looking forward to new years :)) also our birthdays, though his is pretty far away LOL.. basically i guess i'm excited to go through special days of the year with him
🌟 How long do you think you’ll be together? How long do you want to be together?  ✨forever✨ ... who knows! i like to think we're in it for the long haul, it's extremely rare that i develop feelings for someone so there's definitely something very special and long-lasting here
🌟 Do you think you’ll continue to self-ship with them for a while? y e s LOL i anticipate it going on for a while, i had a previous f/o that i essentially self-shipped with for around 5 or 6 years (the self-ship community was not as open and visible back then as it is now) and he was not nearly as fleshed out as diego is in my mind now.. honestly this is The Most i've ever felt for a fictional character 🥺 he is so stinkin special to me
🌟 In real life, are they someone you wish would be your partner? YEAH HFDJKSGS 100% no question.. i love him dearly

Been making characterization notes for this AU, so here's all the guys in the Godzilla line:
(Mutated Human) Gojira - The original monstrous mutant that revealed the existence of mutants to modern humanity. Not much is known about him. He’s Godzilla’s father, but the trauma of the whole event and his young age made Godzilla forget almost everything about him. His wife died in childbirth and while at first he had complicated feelings towards his monstrous newborn that took his wife away, he quickly grew past that and dedicated himself to hiding and protecting his child. He was slowly mutated over time due to exposure to Godzilla and the radiation that he had to consume for energy.
(Born Mutant) Godzilla - The Godzilla throughout the Showa and Heisei era events. The original ‘king of the mutants’. His earliest memories are fear and pain, though he doesn’t know exactly what the memory is, not realizing it’s memories of the rampage of the mutant known as ‘Gojira’, his own father. These early memories have become weak and lost due to the trauma of the event, but despite this he still had his father’s instance of staying hidden internalized and so spent years hiding from humanity. It’s not until he ran into Anguirus that he would become more widely known. While at first he had a lot of distrust and hostility towards humans for how they always tried to hunt down his kind just for existing, he did come to be more kind and protective of them, enjoying the attention he received as a kind of ‘protector’. Because of his ability to beat almost anyone, other mutants ended up flocking to him for protection and leadership. He was a bit goofy and cocky in his youth, but mellowed out a lot with age. When Mutant Island was destroyed in bomb testing, killing many mutants including his son Minilla, he lost all love and care for humanity, going back to resenting them, though now full of hatred. He no longer cared about being a ‘protector’, instead only doing what was needed to defend himself and his kind (all Heisei era enemies either attacked him or his son).
(Born Mutant) Minilla - Godzilla’s adopted son in the Showa era. While known for being a bit of a weak coward compared to his dad, he’s also known for being very kind and welcoming, especially to humans. In the split timeline, where he makes it to adulthood, he becomes a representative in human to mutant relations. He’s best friends with Baragon, mostly because they were the only children growing up on Mutant Island, and in the split timeline is a responsible and attentive older brother to Junior. While younger, he just kind of follows along with whatever Godzilla tells him, but as an adult he learns to stand his ground against him and the two often butt heads when it comes to decisions about the management of Mutant Island and relations with humans.
(Born Mutant) Godzilla Junior - Godzilla’s adopted son in the Heisei era and known as Godzilla throughout the Millenium era events. As a child, much like his brother Minilla, he was noted as being very sweet, kind, and especially friendly towards humans, though for him it has to do with having developed a close relationship with a human when he was born. When he was a teenager, his dad sent him away suddenly, not giving him much explanation. This was Godzilla not wanting him to see him slowly die, though the lack of explanation left a bit of an abandonment issue, especially after being given away by the humans as a baby. His subsequent death at the hands of Destoroyah and being brought back only to find his father dead, all after humans drew them to the fight, breaks something in him. He not only loses all trust in humanity, but others period, becoming extremely defensive and aggressive towards anyone. This negative state is what leaves him open to being possessed by Gojira’s spirit, having always had a spiritual sensitivity since birth. The efforts of Leo, Baragon, and Anguirus to bring him back to himself, at the cost of Anguirus’ own life, finally calms him down enough to stop going out of his way to pick fights and start to regain some trust, finding and taking in Minya 2 years later helping even more. The event that really seems to bring him some closure and relief is when himself, Leo, and Minya go back in the past, and he has the opportunity to interact with his dad again, in the end splitting the timeline and risking his own existence by warning them of the destruction, in order to save Minilla’s life.
(Born Mutant) Minya - Junior’s adopted son/brother(?) and known as Godzilla throughout the Legendary events. Was born during a very tumultuous time for mutants to exist, as a result of Junior’s rampaging causing tense relationships between humans and mutants. As a result of these tense relationships, his parents were killed, with him just barely managing to survive. Shortly after this he ran into and decided to stick with Junior, who at first allowed him out of pity, but very quickly came to care about him as family. Compared to Minilla who is cheerful but a coward in dangerous situations, he’s a very timid child, hesitant to speak up and very uncertain of things. This, of course, he does grow out of, thanks to both Junior and Leo’s influence. While he would never call them his dad’s, both Junior and Leo were very parental and influential figures for him growing up. This is why when he becomes an adult and takes on the Godzilla mantle himself, he’s both very aggressive in battle, but also very spiritual and careful about relations with humans.
