Bookshelf Overload: October 2017
Another month, another mountain of media that somehow made its way into my possession! (Actually, I know exactly how.) Thanks to some fantastic sales, I finally got around to filling in the gaps in my collection of Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond. I also ended up buying more anime than I usually do, too. In particular, Sentai Filmworks announced back in September that it would be discontinuing DVDs and has since been working to clear out stock. Since my eyesight is poor enough that I don’t usually notice a difference in visual quality between DVD and Blu-ray releases, I took the opportunity to pick up Space Brothers and a few other things at a greatly discounted price. As for October manga debuts, I was greatly impressed by Spirit Circle, Volume 1 by Satoshi Mizukami. I was also really looking forward to the release of Yokai Rental Shop, Volume 1 by Shin Mashiba since I enjoyed the creator’s earlier series Nightmare Inspector. Notably, manga translator and yokai scholar Zack Davisson released a new work in October, too–Kaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan is one of the newest titles from Chin Music Press, a publisher that takes great care with physical production and design, so in addition to being interesting, it’s also a beautiful book.

Kaga for the character ask?
how i feel about this character:
my first ever hlitf instructor ;~~; he’ll always have a soft spot in my heart. he’s the reason i first changed my icon from my fated forever love hue and he was my introduction to what would quickly become my favourite voltage title. smoking hot 10/10. he’s kind of a dick but he just does things his own way and he secretly is so softe and cares so much. he sounds mean sometimes but honestly kaga is such a Dad™??? also he treasures the people he cares about so deeply and family means so much to him alskdf i will S C R E A M if we don’t end up with hlitf family season because kaga’s character was basically WRITTEN to have internal conflict about being like his father but of course actually ending up being the Best Dad Ever. also kaga has literally the best povs out there. he’s such a lovestruck fool lmaoooo but he expresses it so weirdly so you get so much out of his pov chapters.
all the people i ship romantically with this character:
his mc duh… although i also ship him with ayumu’s mc??? it’s chill that they gave ayumu a love rival in miyayama but a kaga/mc/ayumu love triangle would be t h r i l l i n g !!!!! kaga is effing cute with ayumu’s mc like why does he care enough about their relationship to actually get involved? it’s cause he can see that she’s good for ayumu but only if she’s willing to commit to loving him and being there for him unconditionally. but anyway i love seeing kaga go from not caring about anything to basically being wrapped around his mc’s little finger. that colourless dream is one of the greatest scenes in hlitf and one of my top 10 voltage scenes of all time. also him being nervous and polite to meet his mc’s family? HE CARES SO MUCH. i also love how they have miscommunications and get frustrated when they just don’t understand each other because they’re so different and have different priorities and values but then they gradually begin to understand each other more and more as the seasons go by. and then the thrill of absolute obedience story is just amazing - he really treats her like a professional. also him and his mc are just meant for each other laksfdjsl when they talk about having to choose between work and love and she’s just like ¿¿¿¿¿porque no los dos????? *chefs kiss* amazing and incredible
ETA: something i wanted to flag up specifically and then forgot to because i got too excited is the work/love relationship balance. just the development from him choosing work over love in adversaries and her being understanding of that and agreeing in his position about it to graduation where he’s still struggling between work/love and his love for his mc ends up trumping everything else and they have that talk (after his talk with namba!) and she says “when you choose work then i’ll choose love and vice versa”
it’s SO PERFECT because adversaries is satisfying enough but then the writers went and examined how the relationship could be taken further and then DID IT?? in graduation!!?!
also do i kind of ship kagagami because they have so much chemistry and sexual tension? …..yes
my non-romantic OTP for this character:
i’m still fully on team kaga for best non-romantic OTP. i went back to reread that scene where kaga is worrying because ayumu got kidnapped and beaten as an intimidation tactic to scare kaga and i JUST CAN’T HANDLE IT. he cares so much about people even though he tries so hard not to and to isolate himself.
but also kaga and hana’s relationship is also THE BEST? and i also love the relationship between kaga and miyuki because she’s the only one who can give him shit. anyway he treasures his family (but also his mc’s family!!) so much and it just makes me emomo
my unpopular opinion about this character:
i wish he would stop calling his mc a dog lol. moron/idiot/dork/dumbass and whatever else i’m fine with but i find it so uncomfortable when he calls her a dog/mutt lmao. i know he calls her kuzu/trash sometimes and i even prefer that to dog/mutt. because it’s not like we see him being particularly fond of animals/dogs so i kind of feel like i would rather be called a human fool (because i am) or even trash than an animal (btw i love actual dogs so much)
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
honestly kaga gets some really good storylines and plot points haha almost all the ones i would have wanted (his reactions to losing her, multiple times!!) have happened bc she’s been kidnapped, shot, almost burnt, etc. now i just need an angsty storyline about his mc getting pregnant and having to decide between whether to stay active in the field or not (and she had better stay an active agent!!!! i refuse to let detective mc become a SAHM) and risk injury in the field and also kaga’s turmoil over becoming a father
