I was gonna (finally) continue my reiconing for Star some today, but uh.

The icons I did so far were all in 100x100, like I usually did. I recently started doing 150x150 though, which I feel is a lot nicer because you can just, see more (also I guess bc my screen is big but I just, really feel like 150x150 is just a lot more nicely visible and, idk, I had some other 'reason' too at some point I think).

Comparison here:

Now, my question being, is 150x150 too big for your tastes? Is 100x100 better for some other reason?

I'd rather decide to redo for bigger size now than later, thus here's a poll to help me decide.

Will you ever upload more abyssrium or word villas or some other mobile games?

In general, mobile games are really tricky to record. I used to have a fairly decent program I used-- Side Sync, but it’s been discontinued and is now broken. I can still kind of use it (as I did with my recent Pocket Camp video and the STYLIT video), but it’s a huge pain and skews the video entirely as essentially the vertical game is being shown squished into a horizontal perspective. There is no fix. 

I haven’t found a program that works for my needs. The closest I can find either have a monthly fee (I don’t mind buying something once, but I don’t use things enough to justify a monthly fee), some kind of recording mark over the video and/or will record sound through the microphone. I actually generally play mobile games muted and live in a very loud house so that helps no one. Or they aren’t for screen sharing at all and are really just to get your emails/alerts which I don’t need.

And Samsung Flow, Side Sync’s replacement, is honestly terrible. I can’t get it to work. 

While I could consider an emulator, the issue there is not all games properly carry over progress and my computer is slowly having more issues and just can’t always run them. I do try to use an Emulator for games where I know I will play for a long time, but it can be pretty glitchy (Using Choices and Hogwarts Mystery as examples, my progress isn’t always properly saved and sometimes I have to redo things on my phone after). 

As for the games you specifically asked about, being completely honest, I don’t think I’d be uploading more of Abyssrium or Word Villas regardless as, to put it nicely, both have became a bit too greedy for me. 

Before I go into it, I want to say I never have an issue with putting money into a game I enjoy. I’ve spent a lot on Abyssrium and a fair amount on Word Villas. But I have very little patience with subscriptions for one and I just... haven’t enjoyed a lot of choices either game has made recently (of the two, despite playing Abyssrium longer, I think Word Villas has made me more upset about the direction they’ve gone). 

This will also get quite long, so....

My first worry with Abyssrium came with the pearls. I dislike second currencies and we already had some expensive things (they had a Mermaid for $100 for crying out loud, but they at least seemed to be slowing down with that). Next were some of the event features... like the 150 gift boxes for an event fish. That is A LOT of constantly logging in and I am very much a “let be just be done ASAP and be good” person (I’ll be talking about this more in an upcoming entry) so the added walls were another thing really making me kind of anxious about Abyssrium.

Then they added subscriptions. No ads (which with the amount of their stupid events that required you to watch ads now was HUGE to save time) and the adorable Puffin taunted me, as I had every other fish up to this point. I couldn’t justify $7 a week for that though so I only ever temporarily did the subscription whenever an event happened.

And thus our problem-- we started getting monthly events. Which included a $10-$20 exclusive new species (and sometimes even a second one for you to spend even more money on). And also new dailies which removed more accessible pearl getting, but also were another layer to these events as every single one would have a whole second set of objectives with one that required you to complete 3 Dailies in a row. 

I rarely did the dailies, partially due to my burnt out issues when it comes to monotonous tasks, but also because I find tapping incredibly painful. So I was killing my wrist every single event. And that adds up fast.

It was just too much to keep track of. And then they added in a gacha system too that cost event currency or materials and it just... it was too much. This was too much every month and like why I dropped Pocket Camp (and now only really check in for the special gifts), I just couldn’t take a chance to breathe. 

Adding in Abyssrium Pole just made it worse which continued some of the worst parts of the original while also making things even slower at times and it’s a shame as there’s some really neat things they did with it, but it was just annoying. 

This doesn’t even go into all the other little intricacies I had with some events (Like having to create more than one of each or remake ones I already had because of some objective), but it was just exhausting.

As for Word Villas... Just... ugh, I think what really breaks my heart with this is I LOVE decorating games, but I HATE Match Three′s with a passion so this was so much more my speed and they just had to ruin it. I don’t know if I’ll ever find a replacement either because for some reason every single time someone makes a decoration-based game, they have Match Three firmly printed on their forehead. 

I’m going to bullet-print this one because none of it really requires the long description as Abyssrium did for the most part, but it’s just a lot of frustrations and the fact that they just didn’t seem to care about their fans up to this point.

Constant events. Some people hated these events as they just wanted more rooms, but I actually really enjoyed them! The issue mainly came as they were just, like Abyssrium’s issue, happening constantly. I would’ve been fine with a break of no updates, but it was getting a bit exhausting to constantly be doing event stuff... Especially as the events generally required 60 levels minimum to get everything (Some only required 40 but it was still a lot) and it was just tiring to power through so many due to the limited time.

Similarly, there was a glitch with the Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year event and not everyone even got the photo, yet they were never able to fix this. 

We also started getting Competitive Events which nobody really seemed to want? Myself included. The game was a solo game. This was entirely pointless and making some items only available to the person in first was super scummy, especially when some people were already out of levels and thus, couldn’t keep going for that #1 spot in the first place. 

The Blossom Problem - Blossoms are no longer even in the game, having been replaced by Blue tickets which you can only get randomly through certain things ooor by buying them with a premium currency that you can only get with real money... yet these are now used to get things the blossoms were-- Collectibles that can be used as decorations in various house areas. Some people had over 50,000 blossoms built up only for them to be dumped. They kept asking for more things to be used on. Blossoms were only gotten for hitting certain combo streaks and while not having the combo streak pressure is nice, it’s still a huge slap in the face to long-term players who saved up. 

The writing is kind of spotty. In all honesty, I glance over this a lot as I like the characters quite a bit, but anytime the main character talks with her best friend about dieting and not wanting to get fat when they’re super thin, I just cringe. The dialogue is unneeded. It’s a game for crying out loud. And honestly, proof reading is needed. 

They did recently let use customize the MC’s appearance to an extent, but we still can’t change her eye color or skin color and hairstyles are set to whatever color they are. But we can’t adjust her sleepwear appearance... 

The Premium Currency - There’s just... no ways to get this in-game (or if there are, I have not found them and it’s definitely not much) and yet they keep adding more things that require them. 

New Visual Novel feature? Every choice that is somewhat romantic or just not being awful requires it. And this is a shame as I’d genuinely love to read some. 

Furniture options you like? Might require it. (Heck, the only other option in the current “limited” boardwalk decorating does each time). 

Certain customization options? Require it. 

As a note, I’m not even necessarily against premium currencies as long as the prices are fair and it’s possible to earn in-game too, but otherwise when your game has a huge focus on customization and/or collecting, it’s essentially pay to win and that’s a problem. 

My biggest issue as we get more and more currencies though is the main one often ends up taking a backseat because of it. 

As I mentioned above with Abyssrium, I have no issue purchasing games, but I think having to repeatedly pay to remove ads is super dumb and getting ads between rounds is so annoying, but I don’t always play enough to justify paying every month to remove ads. I also just find it kind of distasteful. 

The upped star costs. I get that I’m pretty far in, but needing 3 minimum to 4 or 5 Stars at a time now to do things is honestly just kind of boring. I liked to do bursts of levels than story, but now I just have to do too many levels to do that and I can’t switch off enough to keep myself from getting burnt out. 

The stupid mission pass thing. Let. People. Play. At. Their. Own. Pace. And don’t prevent rewards just because people won’t pay for the premium version... there shouldn’t even be two versions. 

Too grindy. Too many levels needed for so many things (events, the stupid competitive stuff, etc.) and it’s just exhausting. 

The constant events also really did just end up burning me out in and off itself and then running out of my “no ads” time period due to how little I’m playing just gets me more discouraged. I used to be up to date, but I’ve been behind due to the larger costs and lack of time (and then the ad issue and ugh). I can’t even bother with most of their events lately as it just isn’t fun.

Making a Leather Pattern with Denny Lowe

Part of the Springfield Leather Company philosophy has always been to learn through projects. When you’re getting started, you often need to follow the instruction of someone more seasoned through a pattern or a kit. Denny Lowe is our resident master craftsman and, with a little help, he creates nearly all of our new patterns and kits. His latest project is making a guitar case, a project he’s never tried before. Here’s a peek into his process. 

Getting Started

Planning, pattern making, and cutting 

To make a pattern, you first need a product. Denny finds it easiest to choose from what he’s most passionate about. “Most of the time my projects are picked for me,” Denny says. “[The rest of my projects] are things I have always wanted to do.” 

He began the project by making a case for his own guitar.  “I wanted to make sure I made one big enough to take almost any size guitar. I have a pretty big guitar myself so I made one to fit it.” 

Once he had his base settled, it was time to begin the actual pattern. Using a pencil and Bontex, he begins tracing the guitar. After tracing, he factors in the amount of space needed between the guitar and the case and what materials he might use between the guitar and the leather. “I decided I wanted about a half an inch of foam rubber on each side of it - all around it, so I added another half inch for that. Then I added another half inch for incidentals.” 

Denny glues the gusset to the base 

Of course, the guitar has to fit inside of something, so there’s the matter of the gusset - the piece of the case that connects the top and bottom. “I had to measure how deep the guitar was and I was also gonna have some foam above and below it so I added [the guitar depth] plus a little bit for good measure.” Denny opted to use foam from our store - all of which are about 1/4″ thick.  

After getting patterns for both traced, he cut them out of Bontex and set to work. He opted to make the pattern for the lid of the case after he got the structure of the bottom complete - he originally thought this would improve the fit, but later found that this method made things harder. Next time, he says, he’ll fashion the lid by reusing the pattern from the bottom of the case and simply add more space all around. 

After getting all of the patterns made, Denny cuts the shapes out of leather - just like you’d do with a purchased pattern. Denny knew he wanted to tool his piece, so the leather was easy to choose: Hermann Oak veg tan in 6-7 oz. He also made choices about other materials during this time. He would use Kydex as a stiffener for the top and bottom and line the case with velvet. 

Designing the Case

Tooling, fitting and alterations 

Once Denny has his leather cut out and tested for fit, he begins tooling. For this project that element was, by far, the most time consuming part. 

His design approach for tooling is more spontaneous than the rest of the pattern. “I just start drawing flowers on it. There are no patterns for that, so I make something from scratch. I just make something that pleases the eye.” He says that this project put him to the test because of its size. “This was the biggest piece of leather I ever tooled. A saddle has a lot of pieces of leather but none of them are that big. A lot of design had to go into this case - there was a lot of space to fill.” He says that moisture wasn’t an issue for this piece, he just added water as needed and made sure to tape the pieces to prevent stretching. 

Once the pieces are fully designed, Denny tests things out once more before permanently bringing them together with adhesives and sewing. 

For this guitar case, Denny realized he made a mistake cutting out a piece and had to rethink his sewing approach. “I originally started out with a French box stitch which is an angled stitch that goes through both pieces of leather. I made a mistake when I was cutting it so I couldn’t do that.” 

Denny said that misstep doubled his stitching time. “I would have had to hand stitch all the way around to begin with but I would have just had to do it once.” To put that into perspective, instead of hand stitching for 56 inches per piece (both lid and base), Denny had to stitch 224 inches. That upped his band-aid budget. 

Still, he wouldn’t call it a mistake.  “I never make mistakes, I just make more expensive products. That’s kinda what it turns into. It’s the same cost for the customer but it’s more expensive for me. To make or to do things that are mis-engineered and have to redo them or just make them work costs time and money.”

Denny had to weigh his options when it came to the hand stitching fiasco. He estimates that he put about 150-200 hours into this guitar case and that over half of that time was spent tooling. His choices were to redo the tooling or suck it up and stitch some more. 

“I put a lot of time into tooling and I made a mistake cutting an edge to stitch [the case] together, so was I supposed to scrap that deal that I worked a week and a half tooling? Or do whatever it took to make it work? Every crafter is going to run into that situation. It’s like a carpenter or any kind of a craft or skilled laborer. You have to make things work because theory is different than practice every time.”

He says that pattern makers aren’t the only ones who must face this reality. “Patterns help but even that doesn’t solve every problem because materials are inconsistent. Especially a natural material like leather. It’s not like plastic poured into a mold. Some parts are soft, firm, stretchy, some are stiff - so you run into a lot of problems and you can’t match everything perfectly. You have to make them match. ’Course sometimes, you have to scrap it, but most of the time, you can salvage it.” 

Once Denny had his strategy settled, he began stitching his days away. Once he had everything stitched and all of the materials put into place, he just had a few more tests to do. During this time, he made a few adjustments like changing the velvet interior color. In the end, he ended up with a pretty satisfactory product, but it wasn’t pattern-ready. 

Pattern-ready

New methods, materials, and plans for the future

While Denny feels that his guitar case is good enough, he doesn’t think it’s refined enough for people to emulate- plus, he has a few bones to pick with his material choices. 

The guitar case he produced was heavy. He estimates it’s about 20-25 pounds as it’s essentially made from two sides of leather. Still, he says, the weight isn’t his main motivation behind giving this project another go. “The one I made is usable and I love it, but the pattern needs to be refined.”

He says that his current pattern is too difficult to make decent instructions for. Hand stitching aside, he says that some of his design choices like making the top of the case last and using Kydex as a stiffener for the gusset cost him a lot of time. This was especially true when it came to shaping the top of the case as there was nothing solid to easily mold the shape from. 

“I ran into a problem when I was shaping the gusset [trying] to get it to look the same on both edges. The top was just loose. I had to hand shape that and I ran into some problems. I’m thinking next time I’ll build a form. Then I can shape the Kydex around it.” Though, he admitted, he wasn’t exactly sure how he would pull that part off. The Kydex, he added, didn’t turn out as stiff as he thought it should. 

For his second case, he’ll opt for a thin plywood instead. He says that this should give him the strength and flexibility that he was looking for while also cutting down on the overall weight. 

He also wants to reduce the production time for his second attempt. Skipping the tooling will cut his project time nearly in half, but he’s thinking of more ways to get his time down. To do that, he’s focusing on the second most labor intensive step: stitching. “For the next case, I can machine stitch half of it. I don’t want to cut a corner, but I want to do something that’s a little simpler.” He says he isn’t quite sure how he’ll machine stitch some parts, but he’s putting some thought into it. 

He also plans to cut the top of the case out using the pattern from the base. “Biggest challenge is getting the top to fit the bottom. I worried about that all the way through, because I built the top last. Next time I’ll build them at the same time.” 

Finishing Touches

Turning a finished product into a pattern 

We mentioned earlier that Denny doesn’t do these patterns alone! Though he designs them and even cuts out the original pieces himself, someone has to convert those lovely ideas in a cohesive product for our customers. Elizabeth, a member of our Research and Development team, checks in with Denny throughout the process and documents each step with photos and notes. Denny keeps track of the process in his head, so it’s up to Elizabeth to put everything on paper. After that, Elizabeth matches up photos and notes to develop instructions. Sometimes she even converts the photos into drawings for clarity. During this time, she checks back in with Denny to make sure that the instructions work. This is often when, she says, they add optional steps so that customers can make something unique. The Bontex patterns that Denny cuts out are scanned and converted into convenient outlines that are later specially printed so that they come out the actual size of the product. Once all of that is done, Elizabeth creates the packaging, names product variations, writes the product descriptions and makes it available online.

Product Reflections 

Denny’s thoughts on making patterns and pricing his work 

After explaining his process, Denny had a few more thoughts to share. He says that his favorite part of developing a new pattern is seeing how it turns out. “When you’re making a brand new pattern, when you’re thinking about it and it’s a lot of fun. Then you start trying to make it work and it’s not much fun. But, when you get to where you can start putting the pieces together and see what it actually looks like, it’s pretty fun! ‘Cause sometimes it comes out pretty good - it never comes out like I think it's gonna come out, but it always comes out pretty well.” 

Though Denny doesn’t sell many products himself these days, he does like to think about what price he might charge for it. “If you ask me how much money I'm gonna make on it, the answer is $0. Considering the amount of time that’s in it and it’s sort of a unique product, I would say about $7,000 is what it oughta sell for. Without tooling, [the price] would decrease by more than half. If someone with a big name made that and not necessarily any better, I would say $10,000-$15,000 is what it would go for. It’s like a Louis Vuitton purse, the unknown craftsman’s is worth $1000 and [Louis Vuitton] is worth $3000.”

Readability isn’t just being able to see letters or words on a page or screen. That’s legibility.

Readability formulas claim to be able to predict who would be able to read the content. To be valid, those claims would have to be true. But let’s consider what readability really means.

For these formulas to be useful, readability must include understanding. You want people to get meaning from what they see. The content must be useful to readers—answer their questions, inform them, entertain them, or make them think.

No formula can answer the following critical questions:

Is the content what your readers want and need?

Is the key message near the beginning?

Do meaningful headings help make the content manageable?

Does the content flow logically from one point to the next?

Are sections and paragraphs short enough to engage readers?

Are there lists, tables, pictures, and charts where they can help—especially in content that people would skim and scan?

Is the page or screen layout inviting and useful?

A poor readability score tells you only that you have some combination of excessively long sentences and too many long words. It does not tell you what else you need to do to improve your content. A good score doesn’t tell you whether your content creates a good conversation. No score can accurately predict whether an actual person would be able to understand your content.

3. Readability formulas don’t consider the meaning of words.

If a formula only counts word length, it doesn’t consider whether your readers are likely to know what the words mean.

You might say, “Okay, but I’m just using the formula to see whether my content has long sentences and big words.” But a big word might be one your readers know, while a short word could be one they don’t know. If a formula only counts word length, it doesn’t consider whether your readers are likely to know what the words mean.

For example, compare these two sentences:

I wave my hand.

I waive my rights.

Even though wave is a familiar word for far more readers than waive, most formulas give both sentences exactly the same score.

Only the Dale-Chall Formula, which uses a word list, gives wave a better score than waive. The original Dale-Chall list had words that 80% of fourth graders in American schools knew in 1948. Dale compiled a much larger, revised list in 1984—again, words that 80% of fourth graders knew. After Dale’s death, Jeanne Chall published the 1984 version in her 1995 book Readability Revisited: The New Dale-Chall Readability Formula—not long before her own death in 1999.

However, even the Dale-Chall Formula doesn’t distinguish between different meanings of the same word. Enter in a software instruction isn’t the enter that made it onto the Dale-Chall list. Cookie for a Web site is not the same cookie that Dale’s fourth graders said they knew.

And you can’t just compensate for the formula by declaring that “kids today know these new meanings of the words.” You would need to redo the research to get a modern-day list.

We have better ways than the Dale-Chall Formula to check the vocabulary you are using. We’ll describe them later, when discussing what to do instead of running a readability formula.

4. Grade levels are meaningless for adults.

Grade level is a meaningless concept when writing for adults. What we really care about—and what modern literacy assessments look for—is functional literacy: Can adults understand what they are reading…?

You might be concerned about reaching low-literacy adults and, therefore, thinking about writing to a specific grade level.

Of course, writing for your readers is essential. But does a readability formula actually help you to do that? What does it mean to say that an adult reads at an eighth-grade level or has a reading age of 13?

An eighth grader who reads at that grade level is a fluent reader. An adult whose reading has never progressed beyond age 13 struggles over text, very likely hates reading, and probably avoids reading as much as possible. But that adult has much greater life experience and knows many ideas and words that an eighth grader would not know.

A True Story from Ginny

I vividly remember testing a revised lease for renting an apartment. Our readers were low-income, low-literacy tenants. Our aim was to make sure that they understood what they were signing. Most of our changes worked well. One did not.

We had changed the heading “Security Deposit” to “Promise Money.” All the readability formulas gave our new heading a better score—fewer syllables, more common words.

So we took our before and after versions to a community center where we knew we could easily meet some of the low-income people who needed to understand the lease. By offering to pay them for their time, we got several people to try out the different versions.

Most of the people in this tryout did struggle with reading. They read the words promise money more easily than security deposit. But when they read promise money, they were agitated, exclaiming, “What’s that?” or “I’ve never heard of that!”

They had to sound out security deposit; but once they had the words, they were much calmer, saying, “Oh, yes. You always have to pay a security deposit.”

We must respect the knowledge that our low-literacy adult readers have.

Grade level is a meaningless concept when writing for adults. What we really care about—and what modern literacy assessments look for—is functional literacy: Can adults understand what they are reading so they can do the tasks they need to do to find and keep jobs, take care of themselves and their families, and so on?

5. Readability formulas assume they’re measuring paragraphs of text.

No formula can grade an ecommerce page that is mostly images and fragments of text. None can grade a form.

All of these formulas are meant to assess continuous paragraphs with full sentences. For example, the SMOG Index requires a minimum of 30 sentences: ten sentences from the start of the text, ten from the middle, and ten from the end.

Some Web sites claim that the FORCAST formula works with forms because it counts only words, not sentences. But the FORCAST developers didn’t use forms in their research. They used text passages comprising full sentences, just as the developers of other formulas did. They just found that they didn’t need sentence length as part of their formula. To use the FORCAST formula, you need at least 150 continuous words. But if your form includes chunks of 150 words, you have a different and simpler problem: far too many words.

Lists are also a challenge for readability formulas. Just ending each item with or without a period could change your content’s score dramatically.

An example: If you were responsible for importing animals for a zoo in the United States, you would need this information:

To apply for permission, please mail or fax a letter providing the following information: what species of animal is to be imported, how many will be imported, the animal’s country of origin, how the animal will be kept safe and unable to escape, and the identity of the party who is responsible for meeting the animal upon arrival into the U.S.

We think you’ll agree that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made the right decision when they chose to convey this information as a list, as shown in Figure 1.

As Figure 2 shows, this text scores poorly with the readability formulas that Microsoft Word uses; but, if we put a period at the end of each item, the same text scores very well. However, we would then be adding periods to pieces of text that are not whole sentences.

7. Good scores don’t mean you have useful or usable content.

A good readability score doesn’t tell you whether your content works to meet your goals or your readers’ needs. You also need answers to all the questions we listed earlier.

Furthermore, when writers correct just the elements that a formula counts, they may unintentionally introduce other problems for readers. For example, Tom Duffy and Paula Kabance tested four versions of the same content: the original text, a version with shortened sentences, one with simplified words, and one with both shortened sentences and simplified words. Readability scores dropped by as much as six grades from the original text to the version with both changes. But the changes did not result in better comprehension.

A few years later, Leslie Olsen and Rod Johnson analyzed the four texts from the Duffy and Kabance study to see whether they could figure out what had caused those results. They found that the changed versions had lost the cohesion that makes text flow logically and remain meaningful to readers. Changing the elements that the formulas counted created other problems that the formulas didn’t see.

When you use a readability formula—especially if you are under pressure to get a particular number or grade level—you must resist the seemingly easy fix of tweaking your text to get a better score. You might make things worse!

The better way is not using readability formulas at all. We now have much better ways to judge how useful and usable our content is. Let’s look at those better ways.

What to Do Instead of Using Readability Formulas

Let’s look at how to get a good first draft, then at how to evaluate that draft.

Follow a User-Centered Process to Ensure a Readable First Draft

We’ll start with four ways to get a really good first draft.

1. Write for the People Who Read What You Write

The definition of plain language has moved away from writing short sentences and using simple words to focusing on the people who read what you write. As plainlanguage.gov says:

“Don’t write for an 8th-grade class if your audience is composed of PhD candidates, small business owners, working parents, or immigrants. Only write for 8th graders if your audience is, in fact, an 8th-grade class.”

2. Do User Research—or Create an Assumptive Persona

Do user research to find out what readers know and don’t know, what words they use for your topic, and how motivated they are to come to and use your content.

Don’t guess about the people you’re writing for. Do user research to find out what readers know and don’t know, what words they use for your topic, and how motivated they are to come to and use your content.

However, if you cannot do any user research before you start writing, create a short story about someone who must read what you write. The name for such a story is an assumptive persona. To create an assumptive persona, complete the blanks in the following sentences:

Today, ___________ (someone’s name) decided to read ____________ (name of your content item) because ___ (appropriate pronoun) wanted to ____________________________ (reason why the person is reading).

When ___________ (person’s name) comes to my content, ___ (appropriate pronoun) is __________, _________, and ________ (adjectives about that person’s mental state, such as busy, anxious, angry, curious, or tired).

Hint—The reason the person comes to your content is almost never “because I want something to read.”

Assumptive personas help in two ways:

They give you a way of focusing on your readers by walking your personas through a conversation with your content.

They help you notice the assumptions you’re making about your readers so you can research those assumptions later.

Just be sure you think realistically about who would come to your content. In almost every case, you are not your user!

3. Follow Guidelines for Clear Writing

Short sentences and short words are not the only critical elements of good writing. For example, writing in active voice is also important—although no readability formula counts actives versus passives. (Grammar checkers do, but they’re different from the formulas.)

Your organization might have its own guidelines for clear writing in a style guide, voice-and-tone guide, or a design system. Also consider using the guidelines at plainLanguage.gov.

4. Use Checkers, but Don’t Let Them Change Your Content Automatically

Never let either a spelling checker or grammar checker change your content automatically.

If you want to be sure that you are using common words, use a vocabulary checker. When writing this column, we searched for vocabulary checker and chose one of the available tools. It helped us decide to change a few complex words in this column. For example, we changed discern to see. Just remember that a vocabulary checker cannot tell you whether you have used a word appropriately.

Many programs for creating content have a spelling checker built in. Some also include a grammar checker. You can also easily find separate spelling and grammar checkers online.

Never let either a spelling checker or grammar checker change your content automatically. Treat both as sources of red flags. See what they say and decide for yourself what to do. The checkers we are familiar with, especially grammar checkers, often indicate something is wrong when it isn’t.

Spelling checkers and grammar checkers can be helpful, but be careful. They can also deceive you, as we are reminded by Mark Eckman and Jerrold Zar’s famous poem “Candidate for a Pullet Surprise.”

Test Your Text with People to Find Out Whether It’s Readable

We have several ways for potential users to try out our content.

Test Content with the People You Want to Reach

Usability testing is, of course, the best way to know how well your content would work for the people you want to reach. You don’t need many people, a lot of money, or a laboratory. If you know your content exists specifically to help people complete a task, ask them to use it for that task.

For short documents that people might read from beginning to end, such as letters or notices, paraphrase testing is a great technique. For longer documents or any content that you want to ask your participant to read every word of, try a plus-minus technique, as follows:

“Participants are asked to read a document and put pluses and minuses in the margin for positive and negative reading experiences. After that, the reasons for the pluses and minuses are explored in an individual interview.”—Menno De Jong and Peter Jan Schellens. “Toward a Document Evaluation Methodology: What Does Research Tell Us about the Validity and Reliability of Evaluation Methods?” IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication,  October 2000.

You can choose what positive and negative mean for your document, depending on its purpose. Pete Gale describes using a plus-minus technique for exploring confidence in his blog post “A Simple Technique for Evaluating Content.”

Get Help from a Person Who Isn’t Familiar with the Content

Ask the person to read the content out loud to you. Don’t ask them whether they like it. Ask them to tell you what it means.

If you are not allowed to test your content with anyone who is actually a potential reader, the next best option is testing with anyone—anyone at all—who is not familiar with it. You can learn much more about your content by having even one or two people go through it than any readability formula can tell you.

Summary

Readability formulas are neither reliable nor valid. Grade levels are not meaningful for adults. Adults who have trouble reading typically know a lot of words and concepts that a grade-level readability test would assume they don’t know.

A poor readability score doesn’t tell you how to fix your content. Moreover, revising your content to get a better score could make it harder for people to understand the content. A good score doesn’t guarantee success because usability and usefulness rely on many elements the formulas don’t consider.

Writing is a user-centered process, so having users try out your content is a much better way of ensuring success than using a readability formula.
