Overlord: I am the embodiment of everything evil
Harumi:...
Overlord: So you know that evil thing that happened? I was responsible for that.

I love it when I say "Harumi was never evil but her actions were" then get people accusing me of saying Harumi's actions are excusable because it reminds me of this twitter meme
Tumblr media
"I don't think Harumi is evil but I'm also not gonna defend her actions because her actions are absolutely evil" "So you think Harumi's actions are excusable?" no i think she's a deeply traumatized person who lashed out violently because her adopted parents neglected her and she basically blamed lloyd for having ever been neglected in the first place which made her lash out violently even more

Okay here’s another controversial “Green family take” tell me if I’m wrong.
“People who hate Harumi and Lloyd family dynamic ignore that Lloyd and Morro also shouldn’t have a family dynamic, when Morro did the exact same thing”
Because besties I agree I honestly think green cousins doesn’t make much sense either since yknow Morro and the whole possession thing, but at the same time if you look at canon, they just aren’t the same thing and yknow I need people to actually stop looking at Harumi as the girl version of Morro and the only reason we hate her is because she’s a girl.
Because she’s not.
Like yes I agree there’s definitely a lot of bias towards Morro, if he was woman he would be demonised to hell and back but since he’s man then he is adored, and vice versa with Harumi and sexism fucking sucks.
But Harumi and Morro are different guys. Harumi is portrayed as worse in canon in Lloyd’s eyes. Yeah Lloyd got possessed by Morro and that’s obviously bad tm but other than what people assume possession entails, Lloyd was never as shaken as he was with Harumi.
In s5, we never saw Lloyd be conflicted about the possession thing. He had no fear of Morro. We have no reason to believe that a ghost possession feels worse than being a sleep and maybe having a vague awareness of what’s going on. He barely mentions Morro after s5. And I will say I think this is a writing flaw, obviously it would’ve been cooler if Morro actually had some kind of impact on the ninja, but regardless this is the canon. Lloyd hates Morro but he’s not traumatised yknow. It’s not to the point that Harumi got to.
I feel like getting possessed should be worse than getting lied to, but Harumi did on top of it, start a cult in his name, Kill actual Characters (the royal family and Hutchins) and then kidnap Lloyd and his mother and his uncle and then resurrect his father removing vital parts of his father’s mind/personality/emotional cognitive abilities etc. on top of that she also nearly killed the ninja and wu (which Lloyd believed she did).
Somehow she was much more dangerous than Morro was, she was a much more successful villain.
Additionally I would say Morro has more of an excuse to be seen as family, even if I I’m less of a green cousins fan. Because Morro and Wu actually have a father son relationship, in which Wu was actually responsible over Morro. They had a normal albeit imperfect dynamic before Morro left. Regardless of Lloyd and Morro’s interactions, that dynamic was still present even in the very end.
It doesn’t mean and Lloyd and Morro have to be buddies, just because there’s a family connection doesn’t mean shit (this is the show of found family have we learned nothing? Blood connections don’t matter, only friendship).
But like in comparison to Harumi and Garmadon’s absolute parody of a relationship, where Harumi turns to the man who doesn’t remember what love is and asks him to be her father (at this point neither of them know what “father” even means), Morro does have a family dynamic and Harumi does not.
So in response to the original quote, Morro has a much more solid claim to any kind of family dynamic bc his relation to Wu is much more family esq, and also he was bad yeah, but the show portrays Harumi as worse especially in Lloyd’s opinion.
I just don’t like the argument that Morro and Harumi have done the same things, when the severity is definitely different imo and they aren’t just copies of each other. Imo it’s an oversimplification to reduce their characters down to each other.

FUYUMI VOICE!! FUYUMI VOICE!!
I thought of her having the complete opposite voice of Harumi, Harumi has like a calm soothing mature voice, so Fuyumi should have a raspy crack-ish voice! I thought of lots of characters but Glass Boy from adventure time was the best choice (also bc he reminds me a lot of her C:)

I've never watched ninjago but I'm interested in toxic ships. If you don't mind (and no pressure btw!), what makes llorumi interesting?
Llorumi's an intersting ship for me, especially because of how toxic and abusive it is coming from a chdrens show that i grew up watching. So. Strap in i actually have a lot of feelings about this ship. And YES i perfer to consider them a ship in romantic and occasionally platonic context because genuinely its fascinating, and also there IS appeal and catharsis to be found in bad harmful ship dynamics sometimes. Especially if its one very unique and uncharacteristic for a show like Ninjago.
Lloyd Garmadon is effectively the main character of Ninjago:MoS, right? In season 8, Harumi, who's apparently the princess of Ninjago gets introduced as a possible love interest for him.
Turns out that Harumi is actually not the sweet and friendly damsel with a badass streak that the Ninja thought she was, she is actually the shadowy cult leader of this biker gang called "the Sons of Garmadon" and she is hell bent on resurrecting Lloyd's dead father, Lord Garmadon who is an evil dark lord who died a while back, *but not before he was magically un-eviled. Garmadon was evil because he got bit by a demon snake, the Great Devourer(put a pin on this snake because its important later). Essentially Harumi is mega *obsessed* with the demon version of his dead dad and wants to summon him from beyond the grave.
Got all that? Ultimately Harumi's plan to bring back Lord Garmadon works and she manipulates the situation so that Garmadon nearly kills his son *on live television*,and then seemingly kills the other Ninja, his de-aged uncle, and destroys their ship. And then Harumi and Garmadon take over the entirety of Ninjago.
This entire world domination plan is because Harumi wants revenge on Lloyd and is obsessed with his Dad. Why, you ask? Because in season 1, Lloyd originally released the Serpentine and Pythor which culminated in the Great Devourer get let loose on Ninjago again but this time it was BIG so it was collapsing buildings and stuff and one building it collapsed had Harumi and her birth parents, and her parents DIED, and the Ninja werent able to stop the snake, BUT Garmadon was (** note that Lloyd was at most 11 at this time, by the time s8 haplens he's like 16.)
So basically Harumi launched this elaborate plan to destroy Lloyd's life AND make his dead dad love her more, and did this all while decieving him into being in a romantic relationship with her. Already verry toxic right? IT GETS WORSE.
Harumi actually fucking DIES. In her final moments, Harumi realized the literal horror she unleashes on ninjago and REGRETS IT and she dies the same way her birth parents did. And while the building's collapsing she and Lloyd make eye contact and theres this like "i wish things didnt turn out this way" being communicated between them because BELIEVE IT OR NOT Harumi too did carch feelings for Lloyd through all of that manipulation and mind games. Insane.
After the building falls and the Big Final Fight that Lloyd naturally wins, he GOES TO LOOK FOR HER BODY he doesn't end uo finding it. Because Lloyd, despite the trauma Harumi put him through, he cant help but care about her.. even in later seasons its very obvious that he's not over both his romantic feelings and trauma about Harumi. His fear of that relationship keeps haunting him, his feelings and regrets keep coming back. This is actually a part of Lloyds characterization that i think is really special, but the way that this trauma really festers and makes him a lot more... hm messy. I like that. Lloyd is uniquely messy in a way that none of the other ninja's character arcs are.
Okok i gotta address Crystallized now because it explores more of Harumi's feelings about Lloyd. So to catch you up to speed, Harumi gets ressurected by Ninjago's equivent of Satan and is tasked with summoning him to the mortal realm. At some point she manages to capture Lloyd, and tries to convince him to join her side. Obviously it doesnt happen but their exchanges highlight that they still are romantically inclined towards eo. Harumi kinda gets up into Lloyds business in a flirty way and in turn Lloyds very forward about the fact that "you should join MY side instead, bc i know you dont want to be the villain again". I wont say that crystallized handled this point of the relationship WELL but i think their desire to mend this tear between them is really interesting.
SO. TLDR? i like Lloyd and Harumi's extremly messy and unhealthy dynamic. Harumi is absolutley an abuser and Lloyd is her victim. They care about each other and they might even think its love, but even though there are feelings, they dont matter because of what they're relationship actually is. I think its Silly to regard them in a sibling way or even platonic for the most part dynamic, bc -andI dont want to give TOO much credit to the N'MoS writing team- but Llorumi is a canon ship that was written to be abusive, and a key part of the main Hero's trauma. I think erasing the ship's romantic implications diminishes the sheer *weight* it has on Lloyd's character arc. This was Lloyd's first experience with romance and it *scarred* him. Thats's fascinating.
Tbh i genuinely like both of Harumi and Lloyd's character's a LOT. I think its cool to erase the abusive parts of their ship and make them wholesome for an AU, i think its extra cool to explore the abusive parts of their relationship further either in the past, or if they get together in the present, while also recognizing the fact that its toxic and not something worth aspiring for.
I personally like the specific flavor of them getting together and ultimately splitting, but not after hashing things from their past out and being able to find some kind of closure for that pain. Idk.
Honestly i love llorumi so much and i really think that shipping them shouldn't be as demonized as it is in this fandom, esp considering that so MANY other cartoon fandoms have very popular and very similar ships. I appreciate that Ninjago tried to portray an abusive romantic relationship that actually held weight after it was over.

Ninjago/ATLA AU bc there's not enough of those.
Lloyd is the avatar and the Fire Prince and this boi is going thru it. He begins Fire Bending Training very young so by 10 years old he's pretty good but has not mastered it. When he was 11 he accidentally waterbent while feeding the turtleducks with Wu. Wu of course was like 'well shit' and helped Lloyd understand what it meant and also kept it a secret bc Garmadon would either get his son to help him take over the world or if he couldn't he'd probably just imprison him (to make sure he's not reincarnated.) He does actually care for his son but he cares about power just a bit more. When Lloyd turned 14, he and Wu left to travel the world and find teachers for Lloyd so that he could defeat Garmadon. They left at night undetected and now are being hunted down by the Fire Nation. Wu for 'kidnapping' and Lloyd to be brought back to the palace.
Fire Lord Garmadon. After taking the throne he decided he wanted to take over the world and started the war. :|
Wu. This mans never helped out in the war because he didn't agree with it at all. He hung out in the palace doing whatever it is the fire lord's brother does and helping raise Lloyd. When Lloyd was like 2 he left on a 'spiritual journey' for about a year- he just kinda wandered around the world.
Firebender Jay but he only uses lightening bc he went a little backwards in his self taught learning adventures. He accidentally figured out he can control lightening before fire. Upon trying to firebend he either can't even produce a spark or he basically just combustion bends but really badly and it explodes in his face. He doesn't keep trying bc he doesn't really care. Lightening is cool af dude who needs fire. Grew up in the middle of nowhere in the Fire Nation at Ed and Edna's Swap Shop. (Basically a junk yard.) Ed and Edna are nonbenders. (lmao just imagine you own a swap shop and someone just leaves a whole ass baby and takes a lamp or something while ur sleeping) Wu and Lloyd met Jay not long after they left the palace. They were taking back roads and less populated areas to remain unfound when they stumbled upon the Swap Shop. They figured, 'hey we should get less nice things because rich people are very noticeable actually.' Jay who is 16 was like 'mom and dad can I please join these travelers who are actually the fire prince/avatar and his uncle (jay saw a wanted poster) because a- the avatar needs to learn to control lightning bc it would be useful, and b- I want to travel please please please' and thus Lloyd and Wu gained their first moron.
Non-bender Misako. She left to find the avatar when Lloyd was still a baby- not knowing the avatar is her fucking son - bc she wants to stop FL Garmadon and figured committing treason wouldn't be the way to go about it. She wanted to take Lloyd but Garmadon wouldn't let her.
Cole (17) is an earthbender. He wanders the earth kingdom climbing mountains and shit after running away from home. His dad is a performer in Ba Sing Se. After Lilly died, Lou just threw himself into it, ignoring everything else and forcing Cole into dance lessons more often. He didn't want Cole using his bending/fighting because he relates it to Lilly's death. (Instead of resting and receiving treatment for her illness she continued fighting in the army until she got too sick to continue.) Wu meets Lilly while he's off doing his soul searching. Later when he's trying to find teachers for Lloyd, he searches for her, and they come across Cole instead. Cole had been taught by badgermoles after he ran away, and also earned cash by occasionally joining fighting rings in random towns and is a skilled earthbender so he joins to teach Lloyd and beat tf out of the fire lord.
Firebender Kai (16) and Waterbender Nya (14). Kai is a blacksmith and they live in an Earth Kingdom colony. He figured out he's a firebender when he was 12. Nya still hasn't figured out she's a waterbender. They don't know their parents were benders bc they died when Kai and Nya were both pretty young. (FALSE they were arrested bc mixed relationships were illegal in the fire nation. Kai and Nya don't know this bc from their pov their parents just kinda didn't come home one day.) Maya went with the warriors as a healer when they left the Southern Water Tribe. She and one of the men had stayed behind in a nearby earth Kingdom town bc he was wounded badly. She met Ray while he was making blacksmith deliveries. Wu finds Kai and Nya in the village when he's looking to repair Lloyd's sword. He learns of Kai's hatred of the war, and Nya's desire to Do Something and they end up joining the crew. Lloyd and Kai train together since Kai hasn't really had any proper training, and Lloyd is still learning firebending.
Zane (18) is a waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe. His fighting style is like 97% ice, 3% water. Wu and the gang travel to the NWT to find a waterbending teacher. (On the way Nya gets pissed at some fire nation soldier and accidentally freezes him - learns she's a waterbender) When they arrive, Lloyd starts his training under the prev. Master of Ice (do we ever learn his name??) but he won't teach Nya - very Pakku of him - She gets pissed off and Zane is like 'Master why not teach her? She clearly possesses the ability and desire to learn? To which Ice is like fuk that shes a girl. Anyway Zane agrees to teach Nya since he's pretty much a bending master already and Lloyd is like well I'd rather learn from a guy who's not a prick, too. Ice gets mad that Zane is teaching Nya and Zane is like well if she can't learn in the NWT perhaps we should leave so that she isn't in the NWT and then she can learn. Thus Zane has joined the group.

saw a post that really annoyed me but also made me have sort of a breakthrough
Another thing seasons 8 to 10 have an issue with is how the writers never manage to pick what they actually want the 'new, darker' ninjago to be. There's several elements of good plot threads in there, but the writers are still basically working off their usual formula, and ultimately they end up mashing idea several ideas that don't work.
Case in point: Harumi.
(for the record. This isn't an anti-Harumi post. This is an anti-Ninjago writer post.)
I've heard lots of praise for Harumi, sure, but none of it ever seems to be like. directed towards the character in the actual show. She's supposed to be seen as someone who was pushed to their limits for reviving Garmadon fully evil, except when Lloyd points out that she'll end up killing several other families like hers and she just says 'nah fuck them'. She's supposed to be evil, except she does legitimately donate food to the poor of the city. Her death is supposed to be a tragedy, but she's said she wanted to torment Lloyd in gruesome detail on screen after manipulating him and generally being creepy as all hell.
Most egregiously, her motivation of losing her parents is supposed to be more 'morally grey' than the other villains, but in actual fact it's just Nadakhan and Morro's backstories stitched together with edgy black thread. In actual fact, she lost her parents as a child - which is admittedly traumatic, but then she was adopted into royalty, and then proceeded to start a criminal empire.
Nobody fucking goes that far. They dismiss some of that inherent privilege by saying 'oh she had to go through a lot of training to be perfect at all times', but they don't fucking show that. You have to make that up.
In all honesty, as someone who's gone through a tough upbringing myself, season 8 put a very bad taste in my mouth of what the writers think happened to traumatised kids. All we really see is a princess with the most twisted, villain-ball idea of how to do good in the world, but who also might've been right in her own way despite that.
Tumblr media
This frame from OSP's video on villains pretty much sums up everything I think about Harumi.
These are both quite good bases for an antagonist, but Harumi never fully gets to be either of them because the show never decides what they want to do with her. It would actually be pretty biting if she was like... an Elon Musk-like character - a rich shut-in who has actively damaging ideas of what would improve society that people believe purely out of hype - or if her resurrection of Garmadon was supposed to be his season 2 self, because he did far better for Ninjago than the rest of the team, and she was actually blinded by the fact the resurrection wouldn't work for lore reasons or whatever.
But the thing is, if you try to have both, you pretty much just have a brat. While that can also work - see Morro and Nadakhan - you have to then have their actions reflect more on your protagonists than their own sympathetic side, and also you have to make it clear that THEIR IDEAS ARE BAD AND THEY ARE BAD FOR DOING THEM. It also helps to not have so much of a focus on them versus your protagonists if they're not actively being fun - otherwise they just eat up screentime before getting killed at the end of the season.
On the flip side, if you truly want a sympathetic antagonist, you have to write them with a complexity on the same level as your protagonists. Ninjago has only had that luxury once, and the character that was with had five seasons to do so, and was carried by his voice actor and relationship to Lloyd. Harumi has half that time, half that charisma quadruple the crime list, and is put in a place where we have no reason to really want her to change for the better.
It still frustrates me to this day that people took Harumi (and by extension the trilogy) as good purely because of the presence of tropes that can be done well, but actually just rip the tone of the show in half. Admittedly a lot of us were teens entering our emo 'no longer a kid' phase but like, as someone who'd seen something similar going down in MLP at the time, it was terrible to see a lot of the fans falling for the lazy writing tricks that were being pulled here.
[...this post was actually supposed to lead onto how the OP of the annoying post misinterpreted Garmadon's changed character as good because they justified it in canon, but this has gotten long enough for now :/]

i have a ninjago au where it's basically just lloyd trying to summon the rest of his dad's spirt from the cured realm and accidentally catching morro instead and accidentally tethering their souls together till morro can find a new host.
It's called unhappy hauntings.
Enjoy!
