French Downtempo Playlist
A fully new playlist! Got a bunch of chill, heady, and sometimes intense downtempo tunes that range from the early 90s to the early 2000s, all from the nation of France. So far it’s a good mix of synthesizer odysseys and sweet trip hop grooves, and I also think it happens to make for a perfect companion for those times when you’re still awake at 3 A.M. for some reason. Almost all of these tunes come from the great, Paris-based F Communications label, which was co-founded by Laurent Garnier, who has a couple of his own offerings on this playlist himself.
Couple fun notes: things kick off with what might actually be the first ever unintentional trap beat, “Yantra (Open mix)” by Scan X, which came out all the way back in 1993! And the second track is actually two tracks in one: “Fly Over Bombay” by A Reminiscent Drive and “Switch Out the Sun” by Juantrip’. So, don’t fret when you get a bout of silence in the middle of that one; that’s just how the track was released 😅.

French Trip Hop Playlist
Here we go! Started up another French electronic music showcase of sorts and this week we’ve got a variety of dope trip hop grooves that end up clocking in at a little under an hour. Things kick off with back-to-back-to-back offerings from the great, fat-blunt-hip hop-minded DJ Cam, and then we splinter off into a little synthiness, a little bluesiness, a little jazziness, and a little post-electroness.
Only one of these artists ever really managed to transcend the underground, I think, and that was France’s dance music clown prince, Mr. Oizo, whose “Flat Beat” was an immense electro-house hit throughout Europe back in ‘99-’00. However, I went with his less known distorted bassline jam, “Sick Dog Try to Speak,” here.
