Happy 76th Birthday the excellent Scottish actor David Hayman.
Hayman, one of Scotland’s most acclaimed actors of stage and screen was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow on February 9th 1948.
David Hayman grew up as one of three children in a working class family in Drumchapel, Glasgow. Leaving school without any academic qualifications he started work as a would-be engineer at 16. One day, wearing his grease stained boiler suit, he marched into the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and announced his intention to become an actor. He still has no idea where this came from, he is basically a shy person and there was no family history of acting. He took advice and joined an amateur dramatics group and a year later was accepted to study drama and has never been out of work since.
His film and television credits are, frankly, much too numerous to list but include his superb portrayal of hard man Jimmy Boyle in “Sense of Freedom” and, of course, he is recognisable everywhere as Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Walker in Linda La Plante’s long running Trial and Retribution series. He has also starred in the hit Scottish cop drama Shetland as well as Scottish comedy shows Scotch & Wry, Rab C Nesbitt and Still Game.
Hayman has also directed numerous films and TV shows as well as regularly treading the boards in the Theatres.
Away from acting, David established his Glasgow-based charity Spirit Aid in 2001. It has gone on to become one of Scotland’s most successful small scale humanitarian organisations. He started Spirit Aid because he wanted to do a Scottish Live Aid at Hampden, but his rock stars let him down. “They were all, ‘Oh, man, I’m burned out,’ and I was thinking, ‘You’re sitting on your fat arse on your sofa with £40 million in the bank. Go and sit in a refugee camp in Afghanistan and tell me you’re burned out’. But I thought, I believe in this, I’ve got to keep going.”
He spends several months every year visiting his charity’s relief projects where he employs indigenous workers wherever possible. His fundraising operations include Operation Loo Roll, a project selling toilet paper that raised £100,000 in 2007. The charity undertakes humanitarian relief projects from Kosovo to Guinea-Bissau, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Malawi and South Africa.
Hayman is a big campaigner for a Scottish film studio, which is looking like happening soon, he says “It takes the Americans to come in and build a shed where they shoot Outlander and that’s the nearest thing we have to a film studio, think of all the movies that we’ve lost, all the money that we’ve lost all the way back to Braveheart.”
David was recently in the fab comedy from Scottish director Michael Caton-Jones, Our Ladies, “set mainly in Edinburgh a group of Catholic school girls get an opportunity to go to the capital for a choir competition, but they’re more interested in drinking, partying and hooking up than winning the competition” it is an adaptation of Scottish author, Alan Warner, of Morvern Callar fame’s third novel Sopranos, I read the book in the late 90’s it is a laugh out loud book, and the film is also very good.
Hayman was in an interesting film, My Neighbor Adolf, last year, which I haven’t got round to watching yet, set in 1960;s Brazil he plays a “lonely and grumpy” Holocaust survivor convinces himself that his new neighbour is none other than Adolf Hitler. We also saw him in the sequel Fisherman's Friends: One and All, both films get ratings of 6.2, and 6.4 on IMDB . I have just started a binge watch of Chemistry of Death, a Brit crime thriller series which is on Paramount plus. Last year David played a Chieftain in the Disney Star Wars prequal series Andor.
David won a top theatre award for his portrayal of northern Irishman, Eric, in the acclaimed play Cyprus Avenue last year, he has a couple of projects lined up, Jailbroken, an action crime thriller described as "the day before a violent criminal is due to be released from prison he receives a threatening call. Armed only with a mobile phone he must somehow save his family - and himself."And at the other end of the spectrumis a fantasy called Assassins Guild, "After the Mermaid Wars, Iliad's city is attacked by dark forces. With the city full of rancor and corruption, Death herself forms an alliance and offers Atticus, an elite fighter, the chance to return to life. This gift comes at a price."

OUR LADIES (2019)
Starring Tallulah Greive, Abigail Lawrie, Rona Morison, Sally Messham, Marli Siu, Eve Austin, Kate Dickie, David Hayman, Chris Fulton, Jamie Quinn, Jack Greenlees, Stuart Martin, Myra McFanyen, Martin Quinn, James Rottger and Ross Anderson.
Screenplay by Alan Sharp and Michael Caton-Jones.
Directed by Michael Caton-Jones.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. 106 minutes. Rated R.
It’s always interesting to see a teen “girl power” movie that was directed by an adult man, written by two men and based on a novel written by yet another man. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m not so naïve as to think that teenaged girls can’t be just as sex-obsessed and perverted as the boys are. However, I spent a lot of time watching the coming-of-age drama Our Ladies wondering how realistic it really was – even for its era in the mid-1990s.
Which doesn’t mean that Our Ladies was not a fun movie to watch. It was actually quite enjoyable. I’m just not sure I totally bought into it. Still, perhaps Rotten Tomatoes puts it best in their description of the film: “Despite its outdated ideas about teen sexuality, Our Ladies presents a well-acted and affectingly nuanced portrait of female friendship.”
That it does.
Our Ladies was based on the 1998 novel The Sopranos by Alan Warner about six small-town Scottish schoolgirls in a Catholic school choir who take a field trip to the city of Edinburgh. They are in the city to perform a concert, but the girls see it as an excuse for them to get drunk, buy sexy boots, get laid and just act wildly while away from home. (Not surprisingly, the filmmakers changed the title for the film version since the book name was quickly usurped by another pop culture phenomenon with the same title the year after the novel was released.)
Speaking of cultural phenomena, some of the parts of Our Ladies feel rather awkward in the post-#MeToo world. It feels a bit like an artifact of the 1990s – and even in those wilder days it would have been rather outrageous. However, it does capture the effervescence and recklessness of youth in an infectious way that makes it mostly go down easy.
The six girls are as much types as they are characters, but they get the points across. Manda (Sally Messham) and Finnoula (Abigail Lawrie) are the leaders. Manda is a bit of a bully and a blowhard, but she loves her friends. Finnoula is always down for a bit of trouble, but she has been having trouble dealing with the recent death of her father, and she is starting to question her sexuality.
Kylah (Marli Siu) is the pretty, cool chick, doing Buzzcocks covers with a local band and freely shagging all the band members. Kay (Eve Austin) is a bit of an outcast with this group, the pretty rich girl who ends up being okay and having a connection with Finnoula. Then there is Orla (Tallulah Greive), who has recently survived leukemia and now is desperate to lose her virginity.
Our Ladies followed the young ladies through bars and parties, jail and older men’s apartments – cursing like sailors, getting drunk until they puke and hitting on every guy they see. The men in Our Ladies are pretty interchangeable; vain, snippy, sex-crazed and mostly way too old for these girls.
It makes for a wild day (and night). Our Ladies is a bit of a relic from a time that is long past, but the primary purpose – showing girls’ friendships in an unfiltered, non-sappy way – is rather timeless. The actors and the characters make it easier to overlook the slightly creepy parts of Our Ladies.

Bay Area Theatre 2019 - the Top 10
Tumblr media
Friends, Bay Area residents, theatre lovers, lend me your clicks, for we are about to look back at the best of local theatre in the past 12 months. (Or, at least the best I was able to see. With some 300+ local companies, it’s impossible for anyone to see everything.)
Usually I do this one post at a time, building anticipation for which show will take the top spot on the list. This year, we’re binging - you get it all at once.
Tumblr media
#10 - “King of the Yees” at San Francisco Playhouse
Here’s a tip for successful theatre-going: if Francis Jue is in it, buy a ticket. Jue was one of the reasons Soft Power made last year’s list (and went on to a successful run in New York), and he was just as good in this very San Francisco story of a Chinese family and its crazy lovable patriarch. A charming look at parental expectations in the Chinatown culture.
My full review is here.
Tumblr media
#9 - “Seascape” at American Conservatory Theatre
Edward Albee was a master at recreating the language of relationships, and he was never better at it than with this odd work about a newly-retired couple who squabble (gently) on a beach - until they are interrupted by the appearance of two scaled sea creatures (another squabbling couple) who show interest in leaving behind the life aquatic and evolving into land-dwellers. James Carpenter and Ellen McLaughlin were brilliant - and so was David Zinn’s spectacular dunescape set.
Full review is here.
Tumblr media
#8 - “American Psycho” by Ray of Light Theatre
Ray of Light does only three shows a season, but this seems to give them the focus they need to do them exceptionally well - especially for a relatively small company with limited budget. American Psycho, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, was just as stunning in its own way as last season’s Top 10 honoree from Ray of Light, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. But whereas that Hedwig was a rough-edged look at a down-on-her-luck trans rock star, playing a seedy venue (which made RoL’s home, the seedy Victoria Theater, the perfect place for it to play), American Psycho was all about Manhattan glitz, opulence and wealth. The cast was terrific and the show was bloody fun - in multiple senses of “bloody” and “fun.”

#7 - “Rhinoceros” at American Conservatory Theatre
As I said in my review, if I’d seen this play pre-Trump, I might not have appreciated its razor-sharp satire on the dangers of group-think and conformity in an age of authoritarianism. It would just have seemed creaky and odd. But in our times, and in this splendid production from artistic director Pam McKinnon (and director Frank Galati), the tale of a small town where everyone starts turning into rhinoceroses was simultaneously frightening, insightful and hysterical.

#6 - Mother of the Maid" at Marin Theatre Company
Pretty much every take on the story of French hero Joan of Arc focuses on the teen girl who claimed visions of saints and led France’s armies to some key victories in the Hundred Years’ War. But in Jane Anderson’s moving play, we see Joan’s story from the point of view of the mother who tries to protect her daughter from the world’s dangers - just as all good parents do, and too often tragically fail at.
Click here for the full review.
Tumblr media
#5 - “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” at The Curran
This is scheduled to run in San Francisco (the only place it’s playing outside of London and New York) for two years - though rumor mill has it ticket sales aren’t meeting expectations. Still, I loved it - especially for its stunning stagecraft and theatrical illusions. If you haven’t read all the books, you will still likely enjoy the adventures of a grown-up Harry Potter (and his son, Albus), but I’d recommend perusing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as it does the best job of preparing you for this extension of the Potterverse.
The full review is here.
Tumblr media
#4 - “Becky Nurse of Salem” at Berkeley Rep
There are very few shows I see that I’d be willing to sit through again immediately (the way I sometimes used to sit for another showing of a movie when I was a boy - and when that sort of thing was allowed), but Becky Nurse of Salem is one of them, due to its multi-layered look at fanaticism, feminism, family, history... Its threads intertwine and unravel and reweave themselves in ways both fascinating and funny. Plus, Pamela Reed was a marvel, creating a character we both love and judge.
The full review can be found here.
Tumblr media
#3 - “The Jungle” at The Curran
Carole Hays must love renovations, for she’s done it three times with her beloved Curran. Most recently, the entire theater was redone for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Carole spent a couple of years (and millions of dollars) remaking the space after she purchased it initially.
For The Jungle, a tale of the refugee camp that sprung up near Calais, France, she pulled all the seats from the main floor of the theater, turning it into a simulacrum of the camp, complete with different areas for refugees from different countries: Syria, Afghanistan, Somali and others. A working kitchen was installed, producing fresh, hot naan and chai that were served to attendees. (At least some attendees, I missed out and was peeved when the person next to me let their slice of naan sit there and get cold.)
The experience was immersive and thrilling.
Full review here.
Tumblr media
#2 - “The Good Book” at Berkeley Rep
The Good Book was nothing if not ambitious, aiming to tell the story of the origins of the Bible and its impact on worlds both modern and ancient - but it succeeded mightily. Staged with tremendous energy and passion by director Lisa Peterson (who also co-wrote the show with actor Denis O’Hare), The Good Book had me enthralled from start to finish.
Read my full review here.
Tumblr media
#1 - “Cabaret” at SF Playhouse
One of my all-time favorite shows, and SF Playhouse’s production is my all-time favorite staging of it, edging out the production I saw at Studio 54 in New York with Alan Cumming as the Emcee and Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles. Simply put, Marin native Cate Hayman put Williams to shame with a performance that was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Everything about this production was top-notch: set, lighting, direction (by Susi Damilano), music - plus every performance.
It’s no wonder it grabbed the number one spot.

Happy 75th Birthday the excellent Scottish actor David Hayman.

The Godsend (full film) 1980
Tumblr media
youtube
A 1980 British horror film directed by Gabrielle Beaumont and written by Olaf Pooley. It is based on the 1976 novel The Godsend by Bernard Taylor. The film stars Malcolm Stoddard, Cyd Hayman, Angela Pleasence, Patrick Barr, Wilhelmina Green and Joanne Boorman. Alan and Kate Marlowe are out an walk with their kids, Davy, Lucy, Sam, and baby Matthew. Kate meets a pregnant stranger and she comes home with them. It's apparent that Alan finds something "off" about her right away, as she intensely stares at him, but he doesn't say anything. Left briefly unattended, she cuts their telephone line. Alan is about to drive her home, but she goes into labor, and Kate helps her deliver a baby girl. The next day, Kate sees the woman is gone, having abandoned the child with them. Despite Alan's reservations, Kate wants to keep the baby, whom they name Bonnie. Later on, they find Matthew dead in a playpen with Bonnie. At a family picnic, Davy and Bonnie wander off, and they search for them desperately. Kate finds Bonnie on the bank of a creek with scratches on her hands, while Alan finds that Davy has drowned in the creek. Alan attempts to perform CPR on Davy, but is unsuccessful. Later, Kate and Alan agree that the scratches on Bonnie must have been from Davy saving her. Bonnie starts to break things and Sam gets blamed for them, despite him saying he didn't do it. Kate attributes this to Sam's jealousy of Bonnie. One day, the family is playing hide and go seek and Alan finds Sam dead in a barn. Later, Alan finds Bonnie's ribbon next to where Sam's body was. The Marlowe's begin to receive letters accusing them of killing their children and Kate falls into a depression. When a reporter comes to their house and upsets Kate, Alan agrees to move the family to London. Bonnie becomes ill with the mumps, and purposely kisses Alan as he takes a nap. He becomes ill with the mumps too, and has a flashback in a dream, to the circumstances of the deaths of his sons, and Bonnie being nearby in each one. At a playground, Alan watches Bonnie throw an unoccupied swing in the path of a swing Lucy is swinging on. The chains on the swing twist together, but Lucy does not fall off, and Alan is able to save her before she is hurt. Alan tries to discuss his concerns about Bonnie with Kate, saying she is not normal. Kate strongly disagrees, saying that Bonnie loves Lucy and was only playing. Alan says Bonnie loves Lucy the same way she loved their three boys, and Kate is disgusted at the insinuation. Alan tells Kate his theories about Bonnie being involved in the deaths, but she is still in disbelief. Alan uses an analogy about Bonnie, saying that a cuckoo lays its eggs in another nest, and the fledgling pushing the others out to get the full attention of the parents. Alan wants to send Bonnie away, but Kate refuses, so he kidnaps Lucy. Alan goes to see Kate, who is distraught that Alan will not tell her where Lucy is. Alan gives Kate an ultimatum to choose Bonnie or Lucy. She refuses to do so and he leaves. Later, they find out that Kate has had an accident and is in the hospital. Alan rushes back to London, where he learns that Kate had been pregnant, but miscarried due to the accident. Back at their apartment, Alan finds out from neighbor, Mr. Taverner, that Kate tripped over a doll at the top of a staircase and that Mrs. Taverner has taken Bonnie on a trip. Kate comes Alan's work to tell Alan him she wants a divorce. He is alarmed to learn that Bonnie is home alone with Lucy. Alan calls Lucy, telling her to go next door to the Taverner's. Bonnie has them locked in, and as Kate and Alan get home, Bonnie has used mind control on Lucy to make her jump out of a window to her death. Alan tries kill Bonnie, but Mr. Taverner pulls him off of her. Kate decides to stay with Bonnie, and Alan leaves her. At a park, Alan sees the strange woman who gave birth to Bonnie, and is now pregnant, and talking to the mother. He unsuccessfully runs after them to warn the family, but they are already gone.

Foreigners cashing in on North Qld tasks 'a disgrace'
Tumblr media
FEDERAL and state government politicians and officials have been accused of turning a blind eye to the hundreds of foreign workers employed in construction jobs on North Queensland solar farms.
Critics say promises that the renewable energy sector encompassing wind and solar developments represented thousands of job opportunities for Australians have not materialised. Instead jobs are being taken by workers from countries like Spain, France, Bulgaria and Chile.
Yesterday the LNP Member for Burdekin Dale Last labelled the situation which was seeing Aussie workers denied jobs "a disgrace".
He said it made a mockery of the boast that there were "massive increases" for locals in jobs in the renewable energy sector. He said North Queenslanders and Australians were missing out on jobs and that the federal and state governments should be held accountable.
Mr Last said he was advised that contractors were receiving $47 an hour for each worker and that the foreign workers were only being paid $10 an hour. He said the lack of transparency was a concern.
"We need to know what is going on. It's disgraceful, the fact that North Queenslanders are missing out on jobs," he said.
Mr Last could only conclude there might be "thousands" of foreign workers employed on solar farms in Queensland and in other parts of Australia.
"You have to question the government's agenda. It is hanging its hat on jobs in renewables and here, not far from Bowen, we have around 400 foreigners on the job."
Federal Minister for Jobs and Innovation Michaelia Cash said that under Australian workplace and equal opportunity laws all job vacancies must be available for Australians to fill.
Ms Cash said that in case of worker shortages, temporary visa holders could be employed to help local businesses and the employment of backpackers by farmers during peak harvest times was one example of how the system worked.
Member for Mundingburra and Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O'Rourke said last year the state Labor government had "kickstarted the renewable energy boom".
Ms O'Rourke said there were 17 projects financially committed in Queensland providing 2200 construction jobs with the promise of more on the way.
Ms O'Rourke said she could not have foreseen what lay ahead when it came to those 2200 jobs. Asked yesterday about jobs on solar farms going to overseas workers, she said the Palaszczuk government would "always urge employers" to give local workers the first opportunity to fill local jobs.
The Member for Dawson, George Christensen, has sheeted the problem home to Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Minister Alan Tudge. Mr Christensen said Australian Border Force officers were looking at the allegations and had visited solar job sites. He and Ms O'Rourke both said it was not illegal for companies to employ foreign workers who were in Australia legally and who had appropriate visas.
In March this year, Australian Border Force officers inspected several North Queensland solar farms in response to allegations foreign workers were illegally being employed ahead of locals.
The Townsville Bulletin understood at the time ABF officers visited the Hayman and Daydream solar farms managed by engineering firm RCR Tomlinson.
An ABF spokeswoman confirmed "employer awareness visits" had taken place.
RCR Tomlinson was invited to respond to this story at the time, but declined.
This week when contacted for comment on these latest concerns about foreign employment, a spokesman for RCR Tomlinson said he had been advised by company staff on-site one month ago they were "packing up" and work was finished.
This contradicted follow-up advice to the Bulletin from Whitsunday Regional Council sources this week. They said RCR Tomlinson still had an office in Collinsville's main street. Further, they said the company had only recently put on an extra 100 staff in order to try and have the project finished by October.
RCR Tomlinson did not return a call to discuss the matter further.
Ms O'Rourke said the issue of foreign workers employed on solar sites was a "federal government matter".
Whitsunday Regional Council representative Mike Brunker said Queenslanders were available to do the solar farm construction work. He said it was "ridiculous" to suggest the jobs could not be filled from the local and national workforce. He said flying in foreign workers and employing holidaying backpackers instead of locals was "not on".
Cr Peter Ramage represents the greater Collinsville district on the council. He said the influx of foreign workers into the area was "extremely disappointing".
"All of the money is going out of the local economy," he said.
Mr Last said there should be someone in government with oversight employed on large projects.
"If there is they should be ensuring locals are getting jobs," he said.
Ms Cash said foreign workers with correct accreditation were covered by Australian workplace law regarding salary and employment conditions. She said foreign workers who met visa and certification requirements received the same protection as Australian workers.
"All foreign workers are covered by Australian workplace law regarding salary and employment conditions, and receive the same protection as Australians," she said.
Anyone with evidence of illegal recruitment practices should contact the Fair Work Ombudsman or in the case of suspected visa violations, the Department of Home Affairs.

“Cabaret” at SF Playhouse
Tumblr media
I think I said it all in my review at TalkinBroadway, but I will try again here to convince you to get tickets. This Cabaret is the best I have ever seen and I’ve seen a few, including the Sam Mendes production in New York in 1998 and the version with Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams at Studio 54 in 2014. Cate Hayman as Sally Bowles will slay you. Her version of “Maybe This Time” is just as good as Liza’s (not necessarily better, but different, and just as heart-wrenching), and the rest of the cast is fantastic.
Please don’t miss this one - you’ve got two months to get there, but I can imagine this selling out with great regularity, so why not get tickets now: www.sfplayhouse.org.
