Bajan Newscap 4/10/2017
Good Morning #realdreamchasers! Here is your daily news cap for Monday 10th 2017. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (SS).
NO WORK NO PAY - NO WORK. NO PAY.  That was the scathing comeback from Minister of Education Ronald Jones to the almost 200 teachers who are up in arms about his ministry’s plan to dock their pay after they participated in the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union’s (BSTU) March For Respect last Wednesday. “I can’t allay or delay your salary, but if you work you should be paid. If you don’t work, I don’t see how you can be paid,” Jones said last night. His comments come as teachers prepare to meet tomorrow to plan a response to the memo which ordered principals to record the names and times that teachers left for and returned from the march and submit it to the ministry. (DN)
ST LUCY HAS BEEN NEGLECTED, CHARGES PHILLIPS - The people of St Lucy are in dire need of proper housing, better roads and improved water sources, Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate for the northern constituency Peter Phillips has charged. He cried shame at conditions in the rural parish and knocked long standing Member of Parliament Denis Kellman of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) for his poor stewardship after holding the seat for four consecutive terms. Phillips who is determined to unseat Kellman in the next general elections, argued that the parish had been left out of the Government’s pothole repair programme at a time when communities in Crab Hill, Pie Corner, Mount View and Rock Hall grappled with poor roads. He also claimed that some districts including Pickwick were still experiencing water shortages. (BT)
WELL EQUIPPED BUT STILL NO GOVERNMENT WORK – Murray “RAY” Chandler Jr wants to know why he has not been getting construction and septic cleaning work in Barbados.  In an interview last week, Chandler, the owner of Polly Septic Services and Equipment Rentals as well as Polly Construction, said he had been short of work for the past five years despite owning some of the largest and most efficient pieces of equipment on the island. “We can do the work cheaper with no cost overruns. We have a clean record with Government and I, Murray Chandler, am the best when it comes to cleaning sewage in Barbados, period. I also have the biggest earth-moving equipment and I am the biggest contractor in St Philip, but since 2012 I have not been getting any work from Government,” he said. (DN)
BIBA charity helping QEH – The Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) charity continues to make a major contribution to the health care system. Speaking to the DAILY NATION at last Friday’s BIBA charity event, An Evening With The Masters, A Tribute To Fielding Babb, charity trustee Lisl Lewis disclosed they had donated over $500 000 in medical equipment to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and polyclinics over seven years. The art fundraiser was held in Simpson Motors’ Mercedes-Benz showroom in Warrens. Lewis said that it started three years ago when they were allowed to host it at a house in Turtleback Ridge, St James. (DN)
CHEKITA FOUGHT TO THE END – Even in the face of death, Chekita Belgrave was brave. Last month the 20-year-old lost her battle to a rare form of cancer while undergoing chemotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, following surgery in Canada. She was being treated for osteogenic sarcoma, a cancerous bone tumour which had grown inside her mouth. At the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rose Hill, St Peter, on Saturday, hundreds of friends and family paid their final respects to the former Queen’s College student. (DN)
MISSING TEEN FOUND – Police report that 16-year-old Jevon Elcock, of Gibbons Boggs, Christ Church has been found and is safe. Elcock was reported missing last Friday, April 7th.  (BT)
BOWEN: JAIL DANGEROUS DRIVERS – Send them to jail! That’s what president of the Barbados Road Safety Association, Sharmane Roland-Bowen, wants for people found guilty of dangerous driving that causes the death of pedestrians or other motorists. Her comments came after a man last week admitted to dangerous driving in the death of a pensioner who was using a pedestrian crossing. He escaped incarceration, but was fined $8 500 in the High Court. Suspended Transport Board driver Clare Ramon Nevero Hinds, of Perfection Road, Bush Hall, St Michael, who admitted to causing the death of 89-year-old Edna Sandiford on March 3, 2012, has a year to pay the fine, or face 12 months at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds. (DN)
THREE INJURED IN CAR ACCIDENT LAST NIGHT - Three people are nursing injuries following an accident at Wanstead Road, St Michael around 11 p.m. last night. The car, which was driven by 23-year-old Raphael Jordan of Husbands, St James struck a utility pole and later caught fire and was destroyed. Jordan received bruises to his left hand and sought private medical attention. His two female passengers ages 21 and 22 years respectively, suffered injuries to the head, and neck, and were both transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical attention. One fire tender, and five fire officers responded to the scene. Police are continuing investigations. (BT)
TWO PEOPLE INJURED IN ACCIDENT AT WATERFORD, ST MICHAEL – Two people are nursing injuries following an accident at Waterford, St Michael around 7:15 a.m. today. Fifty-four-year-old Deborah Howell- Cadogan of Friendly Hall, St Michael was the driver of the first car, while 60-year-old Danny Gill of Jackson, St Michael, drove the second car. Howell-Cadogan suffered pain to the right hip and right leg. She was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) by ambulance for medical attention. Danny Gill suffered pain to the chest. He was taken to the QEH by private vehicle. Police are continuing investigations. (BT)
THREE INJURED IN ACCIDENT AT MY LORD’S HILL, ST MICHAEL – Three people suffered injuries in an accident at My Lord’s Hill, St Michael today around 8 a.m. The accident involved a car driven by 36-year-old Samuel Boyce of Arch Hall, St Thomas, and a van driven by 49-year-old Thomas Harris of Buttals, Grove, St George. Boyce and his passenger 57-year-old Cynthia Boyce, of Bayville, St Michael suffered chest pains and were transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical treatment. Harris also suffered chest pain. He opted to seek private medical care. Police are continuing investigations. (BT)
Four injured in accident at Oldbury, St Philip - Four people were injured in a two-car collision along Oldbury Road, St Philip in the wee hours of this morning. The first car was driven by 20-year old Tre Belgrave, of Moncreiffe, St Philip, who was accompanied by 21-year-old Akkeem Lashley, of Massiah Street, St John. The second car was driven by 19-year-old Krish Payne of Rose Gate, St John who was accompanied by 16-year-old Donte Dear of Massiah Street in the same parish. The four males complained for pain about the body and they were all taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical attention. (BT)
VICTIM TRULY A HUMBLE MAN – People always say nice things about those who have been killed, but this is one time, chorused residents of Long Bay, St Philip, that the words truly describe murdered man Jibri Cezont. The 25-year-old Cezont was gunned down in his kitchen around 1:55 a.m. yesterday. His brother, 23, who was not named by police but who neighbours called Negus, was shot in both legs when he rushed to Jibri’s aid. He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. When the DAILY NATION visited the family home, a male, who was later identified as another brother, ordered the newspaper off the property after steadfastly refusing to comment. (DN)
VANDALISED AGAIN – One of the 3Ws busts at Wanstead Park, Cave Hill, St Michael, has again been decapitated.  And an upset Member of Parliament for the area, Donville Inniss, says the act smacks not only of a lack of respect for property, but also of ignorance of the contribution made by the famous batting trio. The replica head of Sir Clyde Walcott was knocked off and left on the ground looking up at the other two busts of Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Everton Weekes. Two plaques, commemorating the involvement of a number of companies in the tribute, had also been chipped off and placed to lean against the stone base. It was in 2014 that the bust of Sir Everton was vandalised in a similar fashion, but the artists Frances Ross and Art Edwards created another which was installed in 2015. “I really don’t know what more I can say,” said Inniss, who was one of those who officially unveiled the restored bust in 2015. “If people don’t appreciate the work of our artists and the contribution that the 3Ws would have made to Barbados not just in terms of sport but in terms of international acclaim, then I don’t know what else could help,” he added. (DN)
DOPING FIGHT A MARATHON – Drugs in sport may never be eradicated but better control measures can be put in place, says a sports law expert.  “I don’t think it is ever going to be eliminated but with the passage of time it will be better managed and there will be more disincentives for people to cheat,” Tyrone Marcus said, adding that doping had been around for eons. “[In] one bit of research I did, I found that from 1776 BC this has been going on in sport,” said the Trinidadian attorney, who is also a consultant for the UNESCO Barbados Anti-Doping Legislation Project. He was speaking while giving a lecture entitled Anti-Doping Legislation: Implications for Athletes, Athlete Support Personnel, National Sport Federations and Stakeholders at Solidarity House on Saturday night. (DN)
CRAIGG SETS NEW JAVELIN RECORD - Javelin thrower Janeil Craigg set a new national record at the high-profile Grenada Invitational International Classic at the Karani James Stadium on Saturday. Craigg won the men’s javelin with a throw of 78.71 metres on his third attempt to surpass his own Barbados record of 75.62 metres established at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in El Salvador last July. The final throw from the former Coleridge Parry schoolboy went a distance of 75.89 metres, which was also over his previous record. Cyrus Hostetler of the United States had to settle for second with a distance of 75.25 while Albert Reynolds threw 75.14 metres for third place. (DN)
BDFSP WIN LATE AGAINST ELLERTON – The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) scored with practically the final kick of the game to snatch all three points against Ellerton when the Digicel Premier League continued at the Wildey Astroturf on Saturday night. A 93rd-minute curler from Khalil Gill ensured that BDFSP moved back level on points with leaders Wales. Rashad Jules opened the scoring in the 70th minute for BDFSP, before they were pegged back by a Shakille Belle strike for Ellerton three minutes later. But just when the match seemed destined for a draw, Gill stepped up to turn one point into three for his side. (BT)
PAKISTAN WHIP WINDIES – West Indies plunged from the lofty heights of Friday’s sensational opening win, producing an underwhelming performance to slump to a 74-run defeat to Pakistan in the second One-Day International yesterday. Set 283 to win and wrap up a series victory over Pakistan for the first time in nearly 30 years, West Indies stumbled when it mattered most and were bundled out for 208 off 44.5 overs at the Guyana National Stadium. Captain Jason Holder topscored with a career-best 68 while Ashley Nurse got a robust 44 but the Windies batting suffered a spectacular failure, with none of the top six getting past 15. Pacer Hasan Ali was outstanding, claiming five for 38 while off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez picked up two for 23, as the euphoria from the successful record run chase four days ago all but dissipated. (DN)
EGYPT’S COPTIC CHURCHES HIT BY DEADLY BLASTS ON PALM SUNDAY - Two blasts targeting Coptic Christians in Egypt on Palm Sunday have killed at least 45 people, officials say. In Alexandria, an explosion outside St Mark’s Coptic church killed 16 people. Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Church, had been attending Mass inside and was unhurt, state media reported. An earlier blast at St George’s Coptic church in Tanta killed 29 people. So-called Islamic State (IS) says it is behind the explosions. The group has recently targeted Copts in Egypt. Following the attacks, President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi ordered military deployments to protect “vital an important infrastructure” across the country, the government said in a statement. Four police officers, including one policewoman, were among those killed in Alexandria, the interior ministry said. The suicide bomber blew himself up after they stopped him from entering the church. The first explosion in Tanta, 94km (58 miles) north of Cairo, took place near the altar. “I saw pieces of body parts and broken seats. There was so much blood everywhere, some people had half of their bodies missing. The first three rows [inside the church] were destroyed,” Nabil Nader, an eyewitness, said. Security forces later dismantled two explosive devices at the Sidi Abdel Rahim Mosque, also in Tanta, the state-run Al-Ahram news wedsite reports. The explosions injured at least 71 people in Tanta and 35 others in Alexandria, the health ministry said. The Egyptian government announced three days of mourning. The blasts appear to have been timed for maximum impact, as people gathered to mark Palm Sunday. It is one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar, marking the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. Egyptian security forces had been put on alert in anticipation of attacks. The explosions come weeks before an expected visit by Pope Francis intended to show support for the country’s Christian minority. He condemned the explosions. “I pray for the dead and the injured, and I am close in spirit to the family members [of the victims] and to the entire community,” the Pope said. (BT)
