Amidst several headwinds, BNPL sees considerable growth potential in the travel and hospitality sector

As buy now, pay later (BNPL) model extends beyond its focus on consumer goods; instalment-based financing is seen to find its way into different sectors and industries. Interestingly, travel captured the top spot in consumers’ spending priorities among the non-essential items, and consumers are most willing to fund their expenses through instalment payment options. Consequently, several BNPL firms are capitalizing on this trend to diversify their revenue streams.

In August 2022, Cashew Payments, a UAE-based buy now, pay later (BNPL) provider, entered into a partnership with Sandy Beach Hotel & Resort in Fujairah, to provide the customers the flexibility and financial opportunity to pay in instalments during their staycation. Though this is not the first partnership of this kind, however, it is the first time the BNPL provider is tapping into the hotel industry. In order to diversify its business, the fintech firm has expanded into different verticals and now entered the travel and tourism sector seeing high growth potential.

This new offering came after the firm’s realization that a significant number of residents staying in the UAE were looking for staycation options without paying the hotel price upfront. Therefore, Cashew Payments expanded its lending option for the residents of the country through interest-free BNPL loans, with options to repay in three, six or twelve instalments.

Notably, the firm is also building strategies to expand into niche industries such as furniture, education and healthcare to capture more market share in the country. With more than 50% BNPL penetration, PayNXT360 expects this new offering to see high adoption amongst the customers in the country.

In March 2022, BNPL firm, Atome, announced to partner with the digital travel platform, Agoda, to provide more flexible payment options for the residents of the Philippines. Under this partnership, Philippines travellers will be able to pay for their domestic travel accommodations in three instalment payments. Previously, both the firms had partnered to serve other markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia. Now, this partnership would help in boosting domestic tourism by providing Agoda customers with payment flexibility as they book their domestic travels.

In July 2022, an India-based travel fintech and BNPL aggregator, SanKash, revealed that it is aiming to acquire 1 million customers by 2025. This fintech firm launched BNPL services on its platform after the realization of the massive gap between travel experiences and on-time availability of money. The ‘Save and Spend mode’ feature of the platform, which allows the user to spread out the payment in instalments, has been witnessing an uptick over the last few quarters. While most banks do not lend for travel, SanKash is making travel more accessible and affordable for the customers by offering pay-over-time payment choices. Moreover, it also acts as the focal point for both merchants and BNPL providers to offer and avail Travel-Now-Pay Later option to their customers. SanKash, which uses an AI-powered logical engine at the time of payment & point of purchase, aims to increase partner productivity by 5X and double monthly activation rate plans, serving around one million customers by 2025.

Another United Kingdom-based travel fintech firm, Fly Now Pay Later (FNPL), raised a US$75 million debt funding package from Atalaya Capital in January 2022. The firm will use this capital to expand into the world’s largest travel market, the United States. Notably, FNPL allows the user to spread the cost of a trip over 12 monthly instalments through the travel agents such as Malaysia Airlines, HotelsOne, TravelUp, Air Serbia and Azores Airlines. Also, the firm allows customers to access flexible financing options through its app.

Other BNPL providers, such as Uni and LazyPay, also observed travel emerging as one of the top priority sectors for customer spending. Uni, which is the newest BNPL player in the Indian market has partnered with travel merchants such as ClearTrip, EaseMyTrip, Indigo, Goibibo, and Paytm. Under the partnership, the BNPL provider allows the user to pay via Uni Pay 1/3rd card to book tickets, stay, and pay for food and other expenses during their travel.

With the shift in the consumer’s expectations, BNPL providers are revolutionizing the travel experience through alternative and easy digital payment solutions. Therefore, more fintech firms are expected to see growth, prioritizing the needs of the customers through a seamless and flexible payment experience, making travel more accessible and empowering for the consumers.

Ready, Set, Summer! Agoda.com reveals top holiday destinations for North American travelers

Tokyo’s appeal as a hot destination isn’t limited to travelers from Asia, it sits in the top ten for travelers across all regions, with Agoda’s booking data showing Tokyo jump to second spot for US travelers and fifth for Europeans this year.

While Asia-Pacific travelers are more likely to holiday ‘locally’, travelers from the Middle East, North America and Europe are crossing continents for their summer break. The fashion capitals of Europe, London and Paris are the top cities enticing Middle East travelers this year, while Rome, with its history and Italian chic, takes the third spot. Asian destinations are also inching up the list for Middle Eastern travelers, with Bali, and Tokyo joining Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in this year’s top 10.

Las Vegas holds the top spot for North American travelers in 2019, with Tokyo pushing New York out of the number two spot to number three. The cosmopolitan cities of London, Paris and Rome with their historical and contemporary sights and sounds also make the top 10. Los Angeles, Orlando, Chicago and Seattle are the top domestic destinations within the top 10 this summer.

Meanwhile, in Europe, travelers are venturing further and taking more mid to long-haul trips this summer. Asian destinations have knocked traditional European cities down and out of the top ten list with Asian favorites such as Bali, Bangkok, Tokyo and Pattaya making the list. GOeureka uses blockchain to unlock 400,000 hotel rooms with zero commission

Booking hotels can be an expensive business for consumers once commission fees are added in. And few booking services offer rewards or reasons for travelers to return to the platform, which leads to a “comparison engine” lifestyle.

A hotel booking platform that uses blockchain technology, GOeureka has released the alpha version of its platform, which allows its users to book hotel rooms with zero commission and receive loyalty rewards and benefits, all with no hidden fees.

GOeureka is ahead of many similar blockchain projects, with trial bookings on the blockchain through smart contracts on Ethereum and a significant infrastructure of available hotels. Its board includes C-level executives from Accor Hotels and Agoda, among others.

“ERC-20 smart contracts will be utilized for the security and immutability of data throughout the platform,” GOeureka founder and CEO Manraj Rai told me. “To increase performance and keep transaction fees to a minimum, individual transactions and bookings will be kept outside of the blockchain. The settlement of all transactions will occur off-chain, and fulfilled transactions will be aggregated each day and sent through the smart contract to be validated and stored on the blockchain.”

The problem GOeureka is solving is well known. The existing hotel booking infrastructure is controlled by a handful of booking sites that charge between 10 and 30 percent commission on top of the room rate. Those fees are also not transparent, so consumers don’t get to see how they are calculated. That means the retail price of a single room varies widely depending on transactions between the hotel, the bed bank wholesaler, and the online booking site.

GOeureka’s goal is simple. It wants to reduce the cost of hotel bookings, offer transparency and consistency, and cut out intermediaries by letting the hotel deal directly with the customer. It also enables the traveler to accumulate benefits and rewards. For the hotels, this allows them to reduce the supply chain to the bare minimum, making operations cheaper and more efficient.

Blockchain technology and smart contracts are ideally placed to solve these issues and provide consumers with cheaper, faster, more transparent offers.

“GOeureka chose the Ethereum blockchain due to its flexible and extensible nature,” Rai said. “The use of Ethereum smart contracts allows for the creation of autonomous agents that may be implemented throughout GOeureka’s platform to automate many processes and remove various third parties that usually result in a slower process and multiple transaction fees that lead to high costs.”

The reward program is a significant part of the platform. It helps GOeureka increase loyalty for both itself and its partners. The company has plans to expand this offering beyond hotels, however.

“Like any loyalty program, we will reward the users for transactions made on our platform. And every GOeureka user will accumulate reward points/credits for repeated bookings, and these can then be used to unlock additional travel rewards, like further discounted rates, free airport transfers, and so on,” Rai said. “These rewards will not be limited to the GOeureka platform, as we are also working on collaborations/partnerships with other companies and plan to open up the usability of our points into the retail sector and across other areas of the hospitality industry.”

So what’s next for GOeureka?

“We already have a working web platform that has over 400,000 properties available for booking worldwide and have been using it internally to book our hotel stays in cities like London, Dubai, New York, Singapore, and Malaysia,” Rai said. “We have also opened up test bookings to a group of beta testers and will be gathering and analyzing their feedback over the coming weeks. The current version only accepts payment via fiat, so the next phase is very much focused on enabling cryptocurrency payments and testing bookings on the blockchain with our partner hotels.”

In addition to the company’s roadmap, it will give a winning investor in its token offering access to free hotels for life. That offer does come with some caveats, however.

The offer includes 15 free nights a year with a cap of $250 per night, which equates to $3,750 per year. Over a lifetime of 50 years, this totals around $187,500, which is equivalent to 1.875 million of the company’s 1 billion GOeureka tokens. In other words, it is 0.1875% of GOeureka’s total token pool.

“This will be funded by our reserve token pool, and the lucky user who has access to this benefit will be entitled to a specific number of free nights a year for the rest of their life, with a cap on the nightly room rate,” Rai said. “Terms and conditions do apply here, and we are also working with our partner hotels to obtain preferential rates for this promotion.”

GOeureka’s token sale is ongoing and ends on November 30, 2018.
