last movie: Princess Bride, just last night! :] I’ve had and am still at the tail-end of a busy and lightly stressful week and thus decided I need a bit of silly sappy adventure that I didn’t need to think too much about.

currently reading: Working my way through the Wheel of Time (currently at Crossroads of Twilight) while waiting for Nona the Ninth! It’s. A strangely compelling series and setting, with some surreal aspects in the reading experience. What I appreciate is that — aside from items that rather clearly are only as they are because the author likes that thing — the series has generally been aware of itself (and its bullshit, if you’ll pardon the language). For instance: the magic system is highly gendered as understood by the characters; while I don’t know how it all shakes out yet, I’ve still noticed enough in-text implications that support their understanding being incomplete and the magic being more a frame-of-mind thing, and the characters themselves have so far on several occasions figured out that the magic doesn’t quite work as they assume it does. Characters can be frustrating and foolish, but in a ‘yeah people do that’ sort of way and so far often have to deal with the ramifications of such. I’ve had multiple instances of “I can’t tell if the author’s being horny or if he mentioned this character’s chest in one sentence because he wanted to talk about jewellery (or fashion, generally) for the next three paragraphs.” I dunno, a very mixed-bag sorta situation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Many thoughts on the series overall, good and bad alike, but overall I’m enjoying it and intend to finish it! :] …as time allows, of course.

Two things: first it’s very funny to me that the first time @vulpes-aestatis and I dual wrote a blue-collar sapphic in space/titanic super powerful piece of machinery novella thing I was writing the war machine, and now we’ve traded.

Second, I want you all to know, canonically, Ames is (if I counted correctly) in her mid to late forties, grew up in crushing poverty in the middle of the world famine humanity had ever seen, has gotten a bunch of cheap implants stuck in her, and has spent the last decade in space. Point being she’d look gnarly af. The trillion dollar spy-gun-satellite is, canonically, incredibly in love with the equivalent of an old pack-a-day trucker ladies, more or less, in terms of her health and appearance. And I think that’s beautiful.

Hello! Welcome to my music sideblog!!

I'm Char (they/she) and my main blog is over at @vulpes-aestatis where I do all my regular weird internet shitposting scrapbooking.

Just some background I guess: a little while ago I saw a post on tumblr that had one of those videos of a modular system hooked up to a mushroom. I thought, "oh wow, this is really cool, I wish I could do do something like that," and I fell hard down the modular synth rabbit hole. I quickly discovered that synth modules are very expensive, but I also came across Ray Wilson's Make: Analog Synthesizers and realized that I already had a bunch of the electronics parts I needed sitting in a bin next to my desk. I reacquainted myself with a bunch of electronics concepts (including op amps, my old nemesis from my college mechoptronics class). I've also started looking into some music theory, which turns out it's one of those topics I wish I had discovered way earlier in my life.

As of right now, the only thing I've actually built is a VCO prototype based on the Noise Toaster that's presented in the book I mentioned above. I think initially, I'll probably end up getting pre-designed pcb's and panels rather than design my own, but it'll still be absolutely fascinating to explore all the intricacies of how it all works.

I think it might be fun to use this blog as kind of a dumping ground to explain some of the concepts and the various things I'm working on: electronics, synth patches, music stuff, or I guess anything even vaguely related. I guess I'll see how it goes and what direction I want to go, but I'm excited to start on this journey with y'all!

last movie: prey! which absolutely rocked. i only saw the first predator and that was super long ago but prey felt basically standalone and i think it was better off for it. also amber midthunder is badass and cute and i hope she gets lots of good parts in coming years

reading atm: for whatever reason, whenever i put a bunch of stuff on hold on Libby, they all tend to come in at the same time so i just started "this is how you lose the time war" by amal el-mohtar and will follow it up with "all systems red" by martha wells. time war is fine so far? the first quarter of the book was pretty meh but it picked up once the letters turned more towards obvious emotion/affection. also I'll probably reread Gideon and Harrow before Nona comes out next month

Currently Reading: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell though it is very slow going. This book is 60% footnotes. So far it’s good though. Also The Green Ripper, because I haven’t learned my lesson about 70′s authors.

Currently Watching: Strange New Worlds season 2 is out but I’ve suddenly lost the desire to watch it, probably bc I just watched a series very quickly and am still hung up on that. It was Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and you should watch it.

Current Obsession: Writing, bead art, clay, and therapy. No these aren’t related, why do you ask?
