logically i know that merlin was being made over ten years ago and that’s why it’s Like That but also i cannot help but be completely captivated by the Like That of it.
#actually i don’t think they have an excuse to be homophobic. cassandra clare was releasing tmi at exactly the same time#which is not something i’ve ever thought about before but. wow.#city of ashes came out the same year merlin premiered#huh. letting that sink it. the same year obama was elected. the same year i got my julie american girl doll#damn that’s crazy. also. the recession. which i must admit i forgot about. sorry i was busy with my american girl dolls idk#what the hell was this post supposed to be about how did we get here#wait city of lost souls came out the same year season five aired. in a post twilight landscape#but a pre-dystopia craze landscape. actually right on the cusp. has anyone analyzed that societal transition? we went from twilight to the#hunger games in like the same year. and then it was a weird mix of supernatural romance and dystopian teen movies for a while#and then of course the mcu took over everything and now we live in hell where there are no real blockbuster movies anymore#wow now i’m depressed about the state of cinema. not what this post was for.#whatever. my point was going to be this. has any interviewer tried asking anyone involved with merlin about It All NOW. like has anyone#tried to bring it up in the past nine years. i feel like if we tried again they’d have more to say#can some bullshit streaming service show cast katie mcgrath in something so she can be super famous online for like a month am#and she can say what needs to be said. i trust her#if EYE was in charge of some dumb show’s pr i’d cast one of these bitches just for this purpose#i can’t believe no one has thought of this#ok i’ll shut up now i know the post got away from me#beth.txt

Literally just an opinion (please don't hate me):
Ok so here it goes: I haven't invest much time on researching about Cassandra Clare and the plagiarism theme so I'm not talking about it but there's something I really need to get a out of my chest, is just my opinion and is not base on any kind of special knowledge or anything, just some ideas that came up while reading the 'anti-Cassandra' hashtag: There's a lot and I mean A LOT of comments about Clare slut shaming Izzy, I'm going to be realistic here: I read the books tons of years ago (probably more than 4) and while I was very young I cannot remember feeling like Izzy acted or dressed "like a slut" on the books. On the other hand (and I'm saying this as someone whose only watched like three episodes of the show, I only started yesterday haha) I do feel like they made Izzy more promiscuous, I felt like it was just this sexy chick who only know how to use her body (I mean wtf she's having sex during the first episodes and btw I hated her mom for slut shaming her.) If my memory does not fails, she was supposed to me this incredible fighter and warrior, who in fact knows that she's beautiful and use that as a tool, but she's waaaaaay more than that. They also go way to fast in her relationship with Simon. Other stuff that people seem to talk about a lot is the fact that Cassandra is kind of using Malec as a way of earning money or attention back to her: now let me remain you that the show actually makes money for it; which means that it would be really stupid to think that all the Malec stuff is purely based on love for the fandom. I mean Alec spends (for what I read on social media: a lot of time shirtless, which is not something that the book character would do). Also, and if I'm wrong correct me: the Bane chronicles were release online around 2013 and there's Malec in there. Maybe in tmi books there's not a lot of reference to it but honestly they weren't the main characters, the storyline is strictly based on Clary's POV, at least on the very first books, and since there wasn't a great relationship between Clary and Alec it wouldn't make sense. People seem really disturbed about the way in which Alec manages Magnus bisexuality: honestly everyone is different and react to certain things in different ways. Alec was just getting his mind around his own sexuality and was dealing with A LOT. In the books the shadowhunter society is really close minded (which I'm guessing was Clare's idea of reflect our own society not so long ago). Thinking that because Alec is gay, he would be perfectly okay with other preferences or not be confuse by them it's totally unrealistic, I mean he literally didn't have a regular education and didn't even have access to things like Internet, like many of us. About the incest/homophobic topics: Cassandra is not the only author who talks about it and I think we should stop shaming her for it. While I don't presume to know about her thoughts and so, I think it's important to realize it's a fantasy book, I know that normalizing these topics (rape culture, incest, homophobia, etc) is a dangerous thing to do, specially rn, but let's not forget that is not real, and instead of blaming books, movies and media in general, for promoting them, we should start promoting critical thinking because there is always going to be people praising this toxic ideas. The first book was released around 2007, that's 10 BLOODY YEARS AGO. We, as a society, have grow a lot and have our own ideas over these topics, and the future generations reading these or other books will know better if we educate them to think better. I will also like to mention that Clare has grown and come a long way as an author. If you read Lady Midnight you'll realize that, the way that she approaches some of these topics is better. She's human. Being a published author does not make you lose your prejudices or maliciousness, that's something that all of us fight every single day. No one is free of the ideas that our society has push in us. Let's not forget that she grow on an entire complete time than us. With less information and less opportunities to explore these topics. I'm not trying to excuse her or something I just don't think all the hate that people is showing her is in any way better that what we accuse her of. Hate is not fight with hate. Anyway this was just something that I need to get out, I'm not trying to change anyone's ideas or anything, it's just an opinion and everybody is free to feel or think differently. P.s. English is not my first language so I hope my words actually match my ideas and that not much is lost in translation. Goodnight x.

Even tho Cassie Clare was problematic at first, she got a whole lot better in her later books- Jem in TID, Cristina in TDA, etc. The Last Hours series is going to be released starting either 2018 or 2019, and it's going to have two biracial (British-Iranian) siblings. One of them will be a focal POV main character. Her name's Cordelia. Unfortunately the fandom thinks she is white because she has red hair. I wonder if they ignored the fact she has brown skin and speaks Farsi?
Cassandra Clare might have characters of color and LGBT+ characters in her books, and she might try to seem “inclusive” and “progressive” with “her” work. I think, however, that she utterly fails at that. Under the cut, a list of all the reasons why her diversity isn’t worth much, and why I don’t think anyone should be giving her any more money, as she will just keep on dissapointing. Call this…
The Cassandra Clare is inexcusable masterpost:
Mistreatmentof Characters of color in The Mortal Instruments:
o  Thereis a really big cast of characters that can be said are relevant to the story –whether they are main characters, secondary characters, or given a small rolethat furthers the plot. The ones between brackets are the ones that are PoC:Clary Fray, Jace Herondale, Isabelle Lightwood, Simon Lewis, Alec Lightwood, [Magnus Bane], Jocelyn Fray, LukeGarroway, [Maia Roberts], [Jordan Kyle], Camille Belcourt, [Raphael Santiago], Helen Blackthorn, [Aline Penhallow], Max Lightwood,Sebastian Morgernstern, Valentine Morgernstern, Marisse Lightwood, RobertLightwood, Hodge Starkweather, Meliorn, the Seelie Queen, Emma Carstairs,Brother Jeremiah, [Brother Zachariah]. Asyou see, there aren’t many of them. Now, the next points will be used to further expand on each of them.
o  MagnusBane: downworlder, an asian warlock. As such, he is considered an inferior raceby the Nephilim. They, however, have no problem in using him as they see fit tohelp fix their problems, although he owes them nothing. He’s actually reallyhelpful and our all-white team of shadowhunters is ungrateful to him. Hisromantic interest is Alec Lightwood – a white Nephilim, who tries to steal hisimmortality (!!) besides being biphobic. The plot is never about him, it’s morelike he’s always there for someone else: to help the Nephilim, as Alec’sboyfriend, as a means of Clare to info-dump, etc.
o  MaiaRoberts: teen black werewolf. Besides Luke, probably the most important ofthem. She’s introduced as someone who was abused by her brother and later on byher boyfriend – whom she later starts dating again. The book shows moresympathy towards said boyfriend than towards her. We’re supposed to side withKyle, not with Maia. We’re supposed to ship them, a victim with the guy whophysically abused her.
o  JordanKyle: werewolf, Maia’s abusive boyfriend. Dies later on.
o  RaphaelSantiago: latino vampire. Per Clare’s Word Of God, he’s asexual, although it’snever established in the book. He’s a morally grey character who also dies.
o  AlinePenhallow: Nephilim, chinese lesbian. Her first appearance is during the ClaceIncest Angst – she’s seen by Clary while making out with Jace. He wants to seeif he can “think of another girl” and she wants to see if she could like anyboy at all, as Nephilim society is really homophobic. On the course of theother books, she starts dating Helen Blackthorn, and in the last book of theseries Helen’s exiled to the Arctic, where Aline follows her. As of thecontinued storyline – considering the TDA continuity – Helen and Aline aremarried and still live in the Arctic. Not the same happy ending Jace and Clarygot.
o  BrotherZachariah: AKA Jem Carstairs from TID. Chinese Nephilim. In The InfernalDevices he was forced to become one of the Silent Brothers as he had a…chroniccondition? I’m not sure what to call it. Anyway, joining the Silent Brotherswas the only way in which he could survive and also give an excuse to have thewhite/white pairing happen too (I know, I know, this is subjective but bleh I’mnot giving her the benefit of the doubt and I hate Will/Tessa).
o  That’s…it. 6 books and 6 characters of color. Apparently, in Clare’s mind, 1 PoC perbook is good representation. Oh, and she also kills off two of them, and they are all blatantly mistreated through the narrative.
o  Havingone main character of color per book series isn’t too good, either. I mean, look at this: Magnus in TMI, Jem in TID, Cristina in TDA… Correct me if I’mwrong, because I didn’t read TDA but…
o  Whyare the Carstairs Chinese in TID but they are white in TDA? Yeah they mixedwith white, probably, but was it really necessary? Since they are not realpeople and the author is “so worried” about representation she could’ve hadEmma Carstairs as a mixed Chinese shadowhunter but…no. Another brooding whiteblonde main character we got!
Mistreatmentof LGBT+ characters in The Mortal Instruments:
o  Magnus, canonically bisexual, has his sexuality changed by Clare when, through Twitter, she states that he “identifies as bi”, but is “actually pansexual” because he’d“date a nb person”.
o  HasMagnus’ boyfriend, Alec, be biphobic towards him.
o  Theonly f/f pairing in the whole series (Helen/Aline) is given a shitty ending inwhich one of the women’s exiled to Antarctica.
o  Includesa character’s sexuality through Word of God – but blocks fans who want to knowmore about it. This is about Raphael, who, for lack of character development, was dubbed as aroace by Clare, when it’s never mentioned in text and the onlyclue about it is that he never has a romantic interest…
o  More on her mistreatment of LGBT+characters here
Thewhole plagiarism issue: (I’m not going to elaborate on that, a shitton ofpeople before me already did – I’ll just link it)
o  “Cassandra Clare and things youprobably don’t know but should”
o  “Why I have a problem with CassandraClare and why you should, too”
o  She plagiarized the whole plot ofThe Mortal Instruments from another author
o  Sherrilyn Kenyon sues CassandraClare for ‘wilfully copying’ her novels
Miscellaneousoffenses:
o  Anti-bullying YA queen Cassandra Clare is amassive bully. Water also wet.
o  Upholdsthe “not like other girls” misogynistic mentality by having Clary, the maincharacter, slutshame Sheila “the thong” and thinking badly of Isabelle becauseshe’s “pretty” and feminine. Something similar happens in TID with how Tessaand Jesamine are portrayed – Jesamine, the feminine girly girl is villainizedand pit against Tessa and her “natural beauty”.
o  Clare herself slutshamed Isabellebecause she wore clothes that were “too reveling” in Shadowhunters. Because reducing Latina women tothe way they express their sexuality is, like, totally chill and Never DoneBefore /Sarcasm. (Mind you, this wasnever an issue when Izzy was a minor in the books and she was written as“sexy”).
o  Shefetishizes incest: “the mortal instruments” wasoriginally the name of a Ginny/Ron Weasley fic she wrote back in the day; the Clary/Jace incest plot (whenthey are TEENAGERS), she ships Stefan and Damon from TheVampire Diaries, and Cersei/Jaime from Game of Thrones. On The Dark Artifices, CristinaRosales was dating a “distant relative” too.
o  Perhapsthis is being too salty but was it necessary to have Simon dating two girls atthe same time? And then having one of them “forgiving” him?
Thingsto remember:
o  “Writewhat you know” is an extremely shitty mentality. Make your works diverse ANDmake your diversity good. Research is important.
o  Diversityisn’t just including a few token characters for ally points. For a work to bediverse you need to make sure that you’re not applying harmful tropes andstereotypes to your plots/characters.
o  Tokenizing, baiting, etc, are also really harmful behaviors and they should be avoided ATALL COSTS. And anyway your readers are not stupid. They know what you’re doing. You probably know that they know.
o   If you’regoing for an oppression metaphor, make sure to give the oppressed a voice, torespect them. Do not treat them as plot devices or as a convenient help fortheir oppressors.  Minorities are already mistreated in real life, do wehave to go through that in fiction, too.
o    If you’re writing from a privileged position, make sure to listen to what the groups you’re representing in your work is saying. If you’re writing about PoC and you’re a white person, when a PoC critices you pay attention and learn from what they say.
