No, not just grow, but to grow up, deep down and physically he is still a child. He is fifteen damn years old. He loves comics, technology, stupid jokes, and drawing.

But he's left alone, with a single mom and an uncle who can't play that big of a role in the family even if he tries.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's been able to cook a light evening meal for himself (and his mom) for a few years now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he knows how to iron, do laundry, mop the floor, and all these other household chores that usually fall on the mother's shoulders.

But Rio is exhausted. Rio works a lot. And that's why Miles will do everything he can to make her work a little less, to give her a few hours of rest.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the breakdowns, broken shelves, and doorknobs that have fallen off have been on him since he was thirteen.

Not because it's a "man's" job, but because mom comes home late at night and that's the last thing Miles G. wants her to do. Although Rio did ask Miles to leave it to her.

But he's a pushy guy, you know.

I wouldn't be surprised if he knows exactly all the water, gas, and heating bills. He knows how much they owe over the past months, he knows how much money they need to pay back to stay afloat.

I wouldn't be surprised if he and his mother sit together in the evenings and count it all up, no longer complaining that the other needs a break.

Because they need each other.

Because Miles is Rio's son, and Rio is Miles' mother.

And if Miles has to sacrifice his childhood, his "golden" teenage years to make his mom feel a little better, he will do it without a second thought.

i think, and this may just be my zekrom bias speaking, that if someone wants to experience the full value of bw's story it's better to play through white first. black has the issue of coming off as very dismissive towards plasma's legitimate and well-founded claims that pokemon abuse DOES occur (and it does! from the kanto games' marowak to bw2's liepard there's instances where it's put in the spotlight, so it certainly does happen)... by assigning the protagonist to truth, it feels pretty evident that n's beliefs are "wrong", and the game just seems to brush any questioning aside.

on the other hand, white giving n the hero of truth role means we're basically forced to think about what that means for the relationship of people and pokemon at large. to translate a point n makes in chargestone cave: if you allow people to coexist with pokemon, even if the majority of trainers treat them well, there will always be someone somewhere out there who abuses or neglects them instead. are we okay with that? should those pokemon still be allowed to suffer, just because what they experience is an outlier to the general rule? while not outright stated, zekrom's association with hope and the strive for the ideal suggests that we don't brush off these facts, but instead take them into consideration, and aim to change the world based off of them... like how in bw2 society in unova puts a lot more emphasis on the bond between people and pokemon, and on pokemon as equals (see: iris's dialogue before entering your team info the hall of fame).

i think black version has its own unique avenues to explore, but on the surface level, it's a much more cut and dry, "no, you're just wrong", type of story that kind of makes you work harder to fit it into bw's overall theming of "the world's not black and white, there's not a singular objective right or wrong perspective."

Yessss I think that's exactly what happens, too!

Like, to him specifically, it never actually emotionally feels like he's choosing work over you, you know, he's not in the sense that he does love you both more than ANYTHING. But at the same time, he's also unable to actually stop himself from putting way too much into the job, even when you go from asking to literally begging him to.

Honestly, I think part of him doesn't realize he's doing it. Every second he's at work, he's thinking about you... it doesn't matter TO HIM that it's the third night (or day) in a row he's spent sleeping at the agency, it doesn't matter to him that he hasn't been there for any mealtimes or bedtimes or bath times with his daughter, or anything else... since he's keeping you in his heart, he believes it's not so bad as, for example, real abandonment.

Except it lowkey is.

(For such a smart guy, he's super, SUPER dumb about it—the very few times in a week he's home to see you, he's getting annoyed when you try to bring up him cutting his hours back: not even for your sake but for your daughter's... and then getting angsty when you get annoyed. He can't remember exactly when you start getting really mad.)

But then you hit him with separation papers and the topic of divorce and the whole world comes crashing down on him. I don't want to say you have one of those cliche moments when you literally ask him to choose between family or work as he's walking out the door................ but absolutely that is what I want to say, at least in the sense that I think:

You're talking about trying to make things work, finally, FINALLY, he took a few days off to sort things out with you and commit to being a father... and just when things are starting to seem like they'll be okay in the end (AKA: he was actually able to get you to smile and accept a gentle kiss), in the middle of the night, one of the first he's actually been back in your bed, he's getting a phone call about needing to come into the agency and...

You're sitting up in the dark as he's walking to the bedroom door, and you just know what's happening, and he's turning to look at you and no words are even needed to get across that if he leaves, you won't let him back in.

(And then that's really when he starts to sleep under his desk, eat literally nothing and go out on patrol for HOURS ON END, and actually process the extent of what's happened; that it was just as bad as leaving you all together in the first place, especially with a baby in the picture... and the fact that it was a decision he literally, consciously made.

(It took lecture upon lecture from Aizawa, Denki, Deku, fuck, Monoma, before he was able to get himself a half-decent apartment and actually reach out and to figure out a co-parenting schedule w/ you. Lord knows he'd never ask you to bend over backwards for him ever fucking again.)

“Coming out” to a person can be so embarrassing for no reason especially when it’s a friend you’ve known for some time and it’s just never come up before.
