Is there like a document or an email I can send a resume to? Bc y'all have dental? Does this, like, include health and vision? What's the rate? Are there tax fees taken out my paycheck since you're not really a government organization?
Chief will make sure anything and everything you need is paid for including therapy. It's pretty much a dream. Also, since we are above world governments, not only do you not get fees taken out but your salary is also classified (since this job, in technical terms and in the eyes of governments, doesn't exist) and you therefore pay a flat tax rate every year that's equivalent to a low tax bracket married filing jointly rate. we have to have you pay some taxes so people don't go looking for you in places they don't belong
Whatever part of the world you hail from is paid enough to know better than to ask questions, especially since we hold classified government intel from most world countries and we count as a global anti-terrorism unit. We're well taken care of :] even if its not all entirely legal
to submit your resume please find any nearby camera, vent, or PG graffiti and start mumbling about carmen sandiego into it and we'll pick you up. please mention in the mumbling if you're allergic to any of the chemical inhalants listed on our website that we'll use to kidnap you and we'll do our best to adjust

You know, I’ve been thinking about Carmen Sandiego, just a bit. And about Chase Devineaux.
Chase Devineaux, who from the start was fixated on the hunt, on black-and-white in a world of greys, reds, and blues.
Chase Devineaux, the only confirmed member of the “guardians”—Interpol and ACME—whose first language is not obviously English, with a strong accent and likely more than a little difficulty understanding conversation that wasn’t strictly to the point while trying to show off his mastery of his (second? Third?) language with lines practically pulled from detective novels.
Chase Devineaux, who learned to follow the “dull facts about boring things” over the course of the series, adjusting slowly but surely to another world whose language he didn’t know from the start, and coming to respect Julia Argent for her expertise and clear head instead of not understanding the relevance of the things she said and the plots within plots and resenting her for bringing them to the fore.
Chase Devineaux, more beaten up—physically, emotionally, socially, mentally—than any other guardian in the series, but still capable of some fairly impressive feats of investigation (like actually finding the Isle of VILE) and strength (a forty-something-year-old doing parkour over the roofs of Poitiers?) when directed properly.
Chase Devineaux, unwilling mentor, then grudging subordinate, then confident partner.
Here’s to the terrier of Carmen Sandiego, everyone.

Archives in...Carmen Sandiego?
Tumblr media
Now, this was something I was not expecting. In the final season of Carmen Sandiego, Julia "Jules" Argent, who has retired from her job as an archaeology professor at an unnamed university, returns to a shadowy agency known as ACME or the Agency to Capture and Monitor Evildoers. Anyway, the Chief gives Jules a mission of finding Carmen Sandiego's mother. We see the record room of the headquarters in a few episodes, like the final episode, "The Dark Red Caper," which is shown above. She is going through stacks of paper and undoubtedly archival records along with it! Unfortunately, we don't see the records that closely, so they aren't that detailed, but I still enjoyed that part.
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Jan. 23, 2021.
This isn't the only episode in this season of Carmen Sandiego which features the record room. In the episode before this, "The Viennese Waltz Caper," the Chief gives Jules a research project she says would be of interest to her: finding out about Carmen's mother! Jules, who probably has a crush on Carmen and feels that Carmen is a force of good, happily agrees to this. We later see her going through more records, with her project interrupted as she goes on a trip to Austria, in an attempt to find Carmen. What follows is a heist for VILE that is successful because Carmen has been brainwashed to join them. Oh no!
This is not the first time records appeared in the series, although, admittedly, not in an archival context. In the previous season, Carmen searched for her both in Buenos Aires, looking through a safety deposit box, and there are still loose ends, unfortunately. And in a season before that, she looks through VILE's case files, which have ended up in the ocean. But that's about it, when it comes to archivy themes. I'll end this episode with a screenshot of Jules in the ACME record room in the episode "The Viennese Waltz Caper":
Tumblr media
The final episode of the series, "The Dark Red Caper," Carmen is handed a file which Jules put together, with this information, with Shadowsan giving her a choice of where to go forward with her life. She opens the file and meets her mom at the end of the episode. What a victory for archives, records, and everything in-between!

VILE, ACME, and Team Red Pride month Hc’s
[Author’s Note: Hey y’all’s, miss me?]
VILE:
VILE’s motto is: “If you can steal we don’t care about the rest.” Meaning they’re pretty chill about lgbt+ things.
A lot of the people in VILE are in the community someway or another. Some are more vocal about it while others prefer to keep it on the down low.
In the beginning VILE didn’t do any sort of celebration but as their criminal organization became more diverse pride month became something to celebrate!
They would decorate VILE island with streamers and posters with jokes and puns everywhere.
It’s like a month long party where missions become optional because everyone just wants to chill including the faculty.
ACME:
Much like VILE, ACME doesn’t care either.
Agents have to follow a dress code unlike operatives but I think you’re allowed to wear pins or even embroider things onto your uniform!
ACME may not seem like it but they actually do care and support their agents.
Chief appears to be all business but she takes time to learn about all of her agents. Every single one of them are like the children or grandchildren she never had.
She’ll stand up for all her agents in a heartbeat.
Team Red:
Carmen has the world’s strongest gaydar, she might know if you’re lgbt before you know you’re lgbt.
Celebrating pride month with them is absolutely chaotic.
Regardless of their chaotic nature, team red are always there to talk if you’re questioning any part of your identity.
They don’t take many things seriously and they won’t take you coming out too seriously unless you want them to.
Also Zach and Ivy are your protective older siblings and if anyone says anything they’re getting attacked by angry gingers.

Headcanons for Zach and Ivy working with Chase and Julia post- final season:
Chase finally gets to teach someone (I think this is almost his first line to Julia in the show - that he will be her teacher). Julia let’s him take the lead, as she can see this is important to him.
He gets way too excited when the Chief says someone needs to show Zach and Ivy the ropes and volunteers. The Chief responds with “knock yourself out, Devineaux” then adds “don’t take that literally”.
The one time Zach accidentally calls Chase ‘dad’ and they’re both mortified.
Either Zach or Ivy start calling Chase ‘eyebrows’. The other starts doing it, it catches on.
Zach and Ivy bringing the whole family vibe to ACME. Them getting the other agents to be nicer and friendlier to each other.
Zach and Ivy asking all the agents when their birthday is so they can bring cake to the office. Agent Zari straight up responding with “if I told you I’d have to kill you.”
The first time Zach and Ivy see Chase rough up an ACME vehicle, and they get really angry about it and tell him off.
Chase realising Zach is a better driver and enthusiastically asking for tips like “how do you take corners so fast and smooth? Please, tell me, I must know your secret!” Zach responding with: “I slow down😑”.

I feel like as a fandom, we should acknowledge how much work the Chief and ACME were putting into stopping VILE. Sure, Team Red was stopping the elites but in Carmen's lifespan alone, at least 16 groups of 40(?) thieves were released into the world to do their bidding. TR is great but they can only be in one place at a time.
But an organization can have 7 units taking care of the smaller-time cases easily

The fucking. carulia in this episode. Carmen wanted to talk to Julia!! She is uncharacteristically serious because the situation is too, hence the absence of flirting and the going straight to the point, but she still seeks her out. Julia, however, doesn’t know about the “many innocent lives at stake”. She still has their last interaction in Milan in mind, and she’s thrilled at the chance of talking! In the town hall, she’s so eager to show Carmen she has figured her out - she’s almost playful flirty, trying to find out what Carmen is in Stockholm for.
And Carmen is tense and guarded, more than she’s ever been with Julia- just compare her attitude here to the one she had in Milan. She keeps the communicator, but she knows and trusts Julia enough to know she can talk to her frankly. She knows she can trust her more than the rest of ACME.
And then she thinks Julia ratted her out.
Their first shot at an open conversation, knowing each other’s identities, and it immediately falls apart. And Julia was so sure she could get Carmen on board. She understood her motives, she had Chief’s OK, of course everything would work out. Going in, she wanted for this to work equally for Carmen and for Chief (see “You can’t let Chief or Carmen down”). Julia wanted so bad for this mission to go well, to prove herself worthy of Carmen’s trust, and it blew up in both of their faces.
And don’t get me started on that look they share at the end of the episode. Fuck. Julia doesn’t even try to explain to Carmen what happened. Does she feel guilty for Carmen’s state? Does she think she doesn’t want to hear her apologies? That she won’t want to speak to Julia after that?

Very normal and calm about how others perceive my favourite character
Tumblr media
Hmmkay so:
Devineaux is Not dumb. Well, he's not *dumb* dumb.
Hes loud, dense, arrogant, stubborn, impulsive, egotistical and obnoxious, yes. But he's not dumb.
He believes things based in hard fact, physical and literal evidence and stone cold logic (atleast in his perspective). A huge factor why it took him so long to understand how carmen wasn't the evil doer she was assumed to be, is because of his very thick brick wall sort of thought process:
'This elusive smug woman is stealing. Stealing is bad. I must stop her from stealing. At the end of the day, any sort of motive or excuse you could make up for her Does Not matter because. She's Stealing. And as previously stated- Stealing=Bad.'
Whereas Julia is alot more curious and spares more thought in the 'why' aspect of things, and following reasonable yet sorta hard to straight up prove theories- Why is Carmen Sandiego stealing precious artifacts, only to then soon after, slip them back to the authorities? Might she be stealing from other thieves? The only logical motive for that would be to protect the said precious artifacts from the other thieves. And on and on.
Devineaux, truth be told, doesn't care. He's very much stuck on the "stealing things only to return them makes Absolutely no sense" (given the default assumption she's taking them for monetary value, why would she willingly give them back?? Boom, theory busted, cry about it.)
Other than the observation that two people can veiw one thing very differently (with both looking and focusing on different parts, individual interactions with carmen, with devineaux it's her strictly making smug small talk, and evading him- but with Julia she's *Alot* more friendly, passive and semi-includes her in the caper)
There are more factors to keep in mind.
General knowledge:
A note that we tend to forget quite frequently is that- Carmen sandiego I an internationally known figure. Dare i say a myth- cryptid even! All the common knowledge about her is her signature colour, hat and coat. So like, imagine your tasked yourself as the one to catch the woman the myth the legend, while your partner keeps trying to suggest there's more to the very simple picture. "Maybe she's doing it for a good cause"! Uh. Not sure about that bucko.
Incredibly unlikely, from all her rare moments of talkativeness, she seems to fit rather nicely in the 'stereotypical criminal who thinks their better than the law' type behaviour.
It's alot like trying to psychoanalyise DB Cooper. Who cares??? I'm just trying to find and capture her first! We can deal with the explanation and 'why' part after.
And another point:
Its a clearly made point, that Devineaux is a flawed individual. Very heavily implied and shown, with the little of the pov we see of him.
But! Thats just it! The entire show, as is its namesake, is 90% Carmen Sandiegos own personal view. We, the audience, see things from her perspective, as we have been spoon fed the basic information about the basic premise of the plot that surrounds and personally entails her. And with this pov, we see others the way she does. Julia is the unlikely ally, vile the biggest threat, acme the main antagonists and- well, devineaux isnt really all that relevent, compared to everything and everyone else carmen and team red have to face off against.
Because of this, he's painted as an inconvenient, and brutish obstacle. Purely in the way for reasons we and carmen know to be false- so it's very easy to just think thats How he is in his entirety! But he's not. Let's not forget:
Not Only is this guy a full blown Inspector, But, it's explicitly shown that he has the deductive reasoning, and skill with the process of elimination to (ONLY USING INTERPOL RESOURCES. NO ACME NEEDED!) Find viles home based!! Sure, by then it's Formerly home base as they blew up a whole 60% of it quite recently, but!!! Dude!!! Chief, the literal head and founder of acme, who's been looking for any trace of vile for twenty years couldn't even dream of managing such a feat!
Tldr: devineaux isn't stupid, he's just plauged by ego brain fog, extremely unlucky timing and lack of impulse control.

tfw a random side character takes down the big bad instead of the mc (mini carmen sandiego rant)
i love gray he is my favorite
never will shut up abt him
BUT i can never get over this show having him being the reason vile is exposed. HOW DO YOU EVEN WRITE SOMETHING LIKE THAT
the show is called carmen sandiego but not even the titular main character, who has devoted EVERYTHING we see of her in the show to taking down vile, takes it down. Not even her found family takes it down in her place, to show that the bonds forged with people outside of your controlling family can leave such an amazing impact. NOT EVEN ACME TAKES VILE DOWN. like i wouldve preferred maybe julia and chase going behind chief's back to use acme resources to do their own investigation, but still, to not even have the organization built on stopping vile get that moment is insane.
hell maybe even carmen's old classmates defecting slowly could be worth something thematically
yeah no lets have the guy who was literally
a) meant to be the narrative vehicle for carmen to info dump the backstory in the first episode and intended to be written out
b) was bonked in the head with amnesia and only made a brief reappearance in one ep is s1 and an ep in s2 and no speaking lines in "s3"
c) had a focus in the first half of s4 which ended with him picking vile in the end only to have another change of heart the moment he returns as an antag in the final two eps
be the guy responsible for leaking vile to acme. no high stake rescue mission or final heist or deep investigation. nope just some guy tattle tale-ing lol to bring down an entire criminal organization.
yay female empowerment (jk kinda this show is good at writing female characters as just normal characters but it does greatly rub me the wrong way that carmen get side-lined in the finale of her own show by gray and shadowsan and yet the show claims to be empowering. easily could just be a writing issue tho and nothing to do with gender)

fan fiction ideaaaaaaaaaa! ❤️
Shadowsan has to trust chief with his life during a caper, and Carmen knows that it’s like the only way to save some sort of artifact or something like that, but she doesn’t trust chief whatsoever, due to the trauma that cheif did kill Carmen’s biological father, so Carm is like super scared and worried for Dadowsan.
I just thought it was a good idea, something that could be used later on for you, but it’s like your choice if you actually want chief to make a mistake and then something happens to shadowsan, and then Carmen is like super pissed…….like dangerously pissed………but it’s totally up to you if you want to make it a happy ending or a sad ending lol 😘😘😘
your amazing and tysm for all you do for this fandom, your pretty awesome and I see ur stuff all the time, you are a writing genius pretty much lolll ❤️
Omg stop it, I'll cry right now-- that was such a kind thing to say about my writing. It really made my day ❤️
Anyways, here ya go! It's not very long and I'm not sure it's quite what you had in mind, but I'm happy with it. This takes place post series.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She was a light stepper, but that's never meant much to him. He raised her from infancy; he knew her presence well.
"Are you going to lurk there all day," he asked, "Or are you going to say hello?"
He turned around, abandoning the task of polishing his newly--and legally-- acquired swords. Carmen glanced at him wordlessly, contributing nothing. She was sullen as stared down at the hotel room's desk, absently running her fingers along the surface. Her lips were slightly pursed and her eyebrows were drawn. He recognized the look well, and seeing it, he may as well have been picked up by the scruff and placed back in time twelve years.
Black Sheep had never been much of a reticent child, but when she wanted something she knew they wouldn't allow, she took her time to work up the will to ask. She would become silent and broody, and Shadowsan always found it amusing how transparent children could be.
"Is there something you want?"
She glared down at the desk, fingers drawing still. He folded his hands behind his back as he waited on her.
"...Let me come with you." She said.
"No."
"Shadowsan."
"You are in no condition," He said, nodding to her arm in a cast. "How did that even happen?"
"I don't want to talk about it." She muttered.
He hummed and made a mental note to ask Player about it later.
"I thought you were out of the game," She said, "What changed?"
He looked at her, eyebrows raised. "I could ask the same of you. Why are you here, Carmen?"
She snorted. "I'm only partly retired. You know I can't sit still."
He considered this. He nodded.
"Point."
"Why are you doing this, Shadowsan? What happened to living a normal life?"
"This operation hits close to home. Various museums around the country have been the targets of often violent robberies. ACME Intel indicates that Matsumoto could be next."
"'Could be,' huh? Give me and Player two hours and we'll get you definite answers."
He frowned at her, eyes narrowing.
"What is this about, child?"
"I'm not a child." She muttered.
He rolled his eyes. "Forgive an old man for his habits."
She turned away from him.
"Carmen."
She stared at the floor, shoulders held stiffly with tension.
He pressed again. "What is bothering you?"
She huffed. "It's just..."
She trailed off, her fists clenching as she spun back around.
"...Why do you have to work with her?!"
He blinked, somewhat taken aback. That's what this was about? She'd come all the way to Japan just to plead with him against working with ACME's chief...? He thought her issue with the Chief had been long resolved, was there something he was missing?
"I mean, what's it even about? Chief doesn't do field work! That's weird! And why couldn't you have partnered with literally anyone else? Fuck! You, Zack, and Ivy have tons of experience working together. You could have worked with Jules, or Devineaux, or even Zari! I don't trust it."
He grunted. "I would not work with that French idiot even if my life depended on it."
"Why her?"
He hummed. "I imagine it has to do with me being ex-VILE. It would make sense if she wanted to make sure of my allegiances herself."
"That's ridiculous. She has both Zack and Ivy's word. If she trusts them then she should trust you."
"ACME's chief is a cautious woman."
"Oh, really. Wasn't very cautious of her when she pulled a gun on my father."
Oh.
Okay. He understood now.
"Are you worried she's going to..?"
She hugged herself, suddenly looking very unsure of herself.
"No... Yes. Maybe... I don't know. Just let me come with you..?"
He sighed heavily and approached her. He put a hand on her shoulder and waited for her to look at him.
"I will be fine," He assured her, "I've been in and out of this game for a long time. Even if she does try anything-- which I know she won't-- I am perfectly capable of defending myself."
"I know, but--"
"--Have you been doing okay?"
"...What?"
"Have you been doing okay? You know I am happy to have you here, but I must admit that I'm worried about you. You flew all the way here, and for what? To accuse a woman you yourself have worked with of plotting something insidious? It's uncharitable, and I hate to say it, but incredibly irrational."
She pulled away from him.
"I'm fine." She insisted, "God, you and Player sound exactly alike."
"Player is an intelligent young man."
She rolled her eyes. "Alright, fine, whatever. Maybe I'm being unfair, but you'll have to excuse me if I trust a little less after all the shit I've been through."
She swallowed harshly and swiped at her eyes. He watched her silently, a dull ache in his throat and a stabbing desire in his heart to vanish anything that troubled her.
"Perhaps I should move closer to you, I--"
"What? No. Shadowsan, that's-- No. You're finally back with your brother, you don't have to--"
"--I don't have a responsibility to Hideo, Carmen. You're like a daughter to me, and if you're struggling--"
"--I'm not struggling."
"It's okay if you are."
"Well, I'm not. And it's fine. I have Player. You don't have to uproot your entire life for me."
He smiled ruefully. Of course she wouldn't understand, it wasn't her job to.
Back in the beginning, years and years ago, he'd never been one to care much about anything. Life had not been kind to him, and so he was not kind to others. But it was in those early days, the first few sleepless nights before the nannies showed up, that he found himself actually concerned about somebody else. Holding the child, wishing desperately that she would just go the fuck to sleep, he came to reckon with his role in her life. He had, completely and irrevocably, changed the course of her entire life. She was his responsibility, and it wasn't about him anymore. Anything he'd ever do would have to be for her. This was the burden he shouldered.
(he'd choose this burden time and time again.)
"I uprooted your entire life, are you sure you don't want to return the favor?"
She snorted, a small smile that she tried to fight gracing her lips.
"I want you to reconnect with your brother."
"And I want to make sure you're happy."
"I am happy, Shadowsan. I just... have a lot going on." Her voice sort of hitched at the end, and ouch. It pained him to see her like this.
She shuffled closer to him and he recognized the action for what it was. Even as a child, she could never bring herself to ask for affection. She'd just kind of follow you around and stare up at you and wait until you got the message. The other three never quite caught on-- or, they did, and they opted to ignore her. Then there was Coach Brunt, and that was just... Ugh.
Understanding her need, he took her and held her close. She threw her arms around him, burying her face in his shoulder.
"I've just been so... weird lately."
"It's understandable after all you've been through."
"I can barely relax."
He had no good response to that. He pet her hair instead.
"I don't want to lose you."
"I know."
"...I um. You know that I love you, right?"
He smiled softly, quiet content spreading warm in his chest. He kissed the crown of her head.
"I know. I love you too."o
