Movies watched in 2023
Nomadland (2020, USA)
Director & Writer: Chloé Zhao
Mini-review:
This movie is spellbinding in every possible way. The cinematography is stunning (just look at that poster, which is a shot from the movie) and the acting is gorgeous. Frances McDormand gives a beautifully nuanced performance that makes the character seem completely real. There's not a single facial expression or line delivery that feels "acted". And the same goes for the rest of the cast. I was actually shocked when I read that most of them aren't even professional actors, because their acting was incredibly natural.
As for the story, nothing much happens, but it kept me absolutely enthralled. There's just something so special about Fern, her life on the road and her interactions with all the different characters she meets. It's hard to explain, but I found it all beautiful, haunting and kind of heartening. Chloé Zhao is a truly fascinating filmmaker, and I love how all her films are so... her. You can feel her touch in every single part of it. It's a bit too soon to say this, but I'm pretty sure Nomadland will be in the top spots of my ranking for movies I've watched this year.

There’s a reason I don’t bother watching. It seems like nothing more than a way for white folk to pat themselves on the back.
Ain’t ish changed, there’s people who haven’t watched it in decades! 🤷🏽‍♀️

I can’t believe it took me so long to watch Dune. I heard a lot of good things and I can only agree. Great cast, all the visuals are just stunning, epic music, really really good! Very much looking forward to part 2. Dune received six Oscars: Best Sound, Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Production Design, Best Music-Original Score, Best Film Editing and Best Cinematography.

The Power of the Dog (2021, Jane Campion)
13/11/2023
The Power of the Dog is a 2021 film written and directed by Jane Campion.
Film adaptation of the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It was presented in competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, where the director was awarded the Silver Lion - Special Award for Direction. Campion also repeated her success in Hollywood by winning the 2022 Oscar for directing.
In 1925, in Montona, brothers Phil and George Burbank, wealthy ranch owners, are engaged in transhumance.
Rose, George's wife, cannot play more than a few notes of Strauss's Radetzky March and is humiliated several times by Phil, who starts whistling the tune every time they are near each other.
Rose's son Peter rides alone one day and finds a dead cow, probably due to an anthrax infection: the boy puts on gloves and cuts off pieces of the cow's skin.
Peter, who did not go to Phil's funeral, opens a prayer book for funeral rites and reads Psalm 22:20:
"Deliver my life from the sword and my love from the power of the dog"
The project originated from producer Roger Frappier, who acquired the rights to the novel in 2012, but it did not go into production until Campion agreed to write and direct the adaptation in 2019. Paul Dano was supposed to play George Burbank, but was replaced by Plemons due to scheduling conflicts with filming him in The Batman. Elisabeth Moss had to give up the role of Rose as she was already busy on the set of The Handmaid's Tale.
Filming of the film, which took place entirely in New Zealand, began in January 2020 in Maniototo, in the Otago region, then moving to Dunedin. Work was interrupted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic: Cumberbatch, Dunst and Plemons remained in the country for the entire duration of the lockdown, then resumed filming in June.
The film premiered on September 1, 2021 in competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. It will also be presented at the BFI London Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.

Remember… women take clothing much more seriously than men. I’ve never seen a man walk into a party and say “Oh, my God, I’m so embarrassed; get me out of here. There’s another man wearing a black tuxedo.” — Rita Rudner

I could not find screencaps of this beautiful movie anywhere, so I am going to be uploading the 200 I took while watching it. I really recommend giving it a watch. It's visually satisfying and compelling, and it's just really something special.

Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2022 — Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC Dune (2021) Directed by Denis Villeneuve Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1
Desert colors dominate throughout the movie, but Fraser, [production designer Patrice] Vermette and costume designer Jacqueline West went to great lengths to imbue that palette with subtle and organic variations of color. “We worked very hard to make sure the world of Dune was not monochromatic,” Fraser says. “For example, Patrice worked veins of reds and blues into the sand walls. He — and Jacqueline, who built these subtle gradations of color into the costumes — both did wonderfully subtle work, and I had to make sure we were capturing those subtleties."
“My approach was to pull as much color as possible out of non-colorful situations,” he continues. “It was all subtle differences, not necessarily bold color contrasts. Achieving bold color in film is super easy. Achieving depth [in the image while creating a natural-light look] when you’re working with a digital sensor and digital lights is harder than it might first appear.” — The American Society of Cinematographers, January 2022

I started watching a movie called The Shape of Water, and during the opening it looked like the kind of movie that wins oscars, so I decided to look up trigger warnings (oscar winning movies usuallly have things in them that trigger me). I noped out of there so fast. Call me weak, but I’m triggered by a lot of things that supposedly happen in that movie, and I’m glad I stopped watching it when I did.

Somehow I haven’t really heard anything or anyone about this film. Which I don’t quite understand, because it’s actually a beautiful film. I love the way it was shot, great cast and just a story worth telling. Is it a new favorite of mine? No. But I do recommend it. Belfast received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Branagh.
