Turtles Encounters Her First Full GMMTV Upfronts Experience: A Personal Journey Into GMMTV2024

LOL, I don't mean to be dramatic -- I was around a little bit (?) last November for the GMMTV2023 upfronts, and I honestly did not know what was going on, except to scream about Cherry Magic Thailand. Back then, I was much more of a Japanese BL gal (see: Cherry Magic), but now I'm down with the GMMTV scene, as it were, through my Old GMMTV Challenge project, and I'm ready to wax on deez trailers.

One huge overall note: YES TO DUDES NOT BEING IN BRANDED PAIRS. Your Gawins, your Ohms, your Thors, your Joss-es. YES. This is an exciting line-up to me to see the dudes getting mixed up. As much as I loved Be My Favorite, I don't need to see GawinKrist again.

I am stealing the formats of the wonderful @bengiyo and @neuroticbookworm to offer my thoughts on the trailers! (My list is literally gonna look like everyone else's list, LMAO).

FUCK YES

My Golden Blood: Joss, Gawin, Mond, Neo. Vampires. Blood. Baseball bats. LSKDJFLSJDFLKSJDGLKJSDLGKJSLDKGJLDSKF. The SFX are gonna be SO BAD. Joss sucking Gawin's blood will be SO FUCKING GOOD. I AM STILL SCREAMING. OBVIOUSLY.

Kidnap: Ohm Pawat's next BL. While he had previously said that he wanted Bad Buddy to be his last BL, the bullying scandal that he encountered this past year makes this decision a sensible one to get back on the brand engagement train. His co-star, Leng Thanaphon, is gorgeous looks like he's making a strong debut. I am very happy for Ohm, but I think I am a bit spoiled by knowing his previous non-GMMTV oeuvre so well (Make It Right, Dew, He's Coming To Me), and I'm feeling like GMMTV isn't pushing his acting chops as much as they used to. (Meaning.... I'd be okay if he left GMMTV one day to do more movies.) Time will tell, but I am happy for him -- he is a king of BL, the most prevalent actor on the OGMMTVC list, and this'll let him rebuild his career. He deserves it, and is a personal fave of mine.

Wandee Goodday: YO. So obviously this looks intriguing! But like -- I'd expect Golf Tanwarin to be doing this for another network. Full-frontal, heavy (HEAVY!) sex talk, smoochin' everywhere. I'm impressed GMMTV is going here. It's perhaps because I have Domundi on the mind heavily with my recent ZeeNunew education, but I have been feeling as of late that GMMTV has been choosing fluff and/or crap romance (SEE: DANGEROUS ROMANCE -_-) over... pure sex, as it were, and this is getting closer to a Domundi-style show than even where Only Friends went. I LOVE THOR. I LOVE THOR!!!! I'm excited for this, and me likey the looks of Inn.

On Sale: I am LOVING this new we're-not-in-school-we-are-just-insane TayNew era. And Jan is a FAVE FAVE FAVE of mine, and looks like she's gonna level this show the FUCK up. I'm SO INTO THIS.

Pluto: For sure I am watching this for Film (oh, and hi, Thor and Arm!). I'm not the biggest Namtan fan? I wasn't the biggest fan of her acting in Midnight Museum or UMG. Kinda flat. But she's at the top of the popular actress list at GMMTV, and it's great that someone of her prominence is flirting in the QL space. Film, though -- Film has CHOPPPPPPPPPPS and will likely eat this role. We might never get EarnPear, but this might be close.

My Precious: For NanonFilm, anything. But this is just the movie with more scenes, right? I don't know if it was ever going to get international distribution as a movie anyway. K. I'll buy it!

The Trainee: Tell me where I've seen OffGun do movie shit before -- and I don't mind the slight theme repeat. KapookPiploy, huh? I have not seen Vice Versa, but I really enjoyed Sea Tawinan in that. Gun crying, not surprising, but I officially stan OffGun because of Not Me, and I'll stand by this one.

UMMMM

My Love Mix-Up: See here for my initial thoughts. I came to Thai BLs from Japanese BLs. Kieta Hatsukoi was one of the first JBLs I discovered specifically through Tumblr. Japanese BLs are so varied -- and I think, when one is watching JBLs, to have a gentle/general sense of how sex is perceived/managed/dealt with in Japanese culture. I'm not gonna get into this too much here, but the ways in which Japanese and Thai societies deal with sex is very different. Anyway. I think my own mental dissonance on this conversation is coloring my thoughts on My Love Mix-Up Thailand/Kieta Hatsukoi Thailand. Pairs are not repeated in Japan (unless you have second seasons of the same show), and to have an established branded pair in GemFourth in Ida and Aoki's roles -- I'm just, I'm not sure. I don't want the show to feel pressured to go to a place it wouldn't go to without a branded pair. Will Thailand pay homage to Ida's unique and inquisitive demi identity? Can the branded ship economy manage that? I dunno. Let's wait and find out.

Summer Night: I'm going to be gentle on this one. I like that Phuwin takes on various het roles. I happened to LOVE HIM in The Warp Effect. And I like Bimbeam in here -- she actually showed some firm chops in 55:15 Never Too Late. Only if the schedule allows will I take this one, but I actually like the smell of it a bit.

Ossan's Love: What in the EarthMix. Ossan's Love was often cited as queerbaiting material for early Japanese BLs (EDITING TO ADD: just want to clarify that that statement literally came from my early days in JBLs reading Twitter; thank you to @twig-tea and @nieves-de-sugui for the clarifications in the comments!); I have never watched it, but understand its importance in the Japanese BL repertoire. I'm gonna remain sus on this until we find out more. (Although, I'm VERY EXCITED to see a channel like TV Asahi break out of the Japanese paradigm of not collaborating with other countries to get this on Thai TV air. TV Asahi and TV Tokyo for Cherry Magic are real groundbreakers, and I do dig that.)

Only Boo: When I was talking about this show with friends, and @neuroticbookworm said "Book's in this," I WAS LIKE, WHO'S BOOK? LMAO. Let me see Book away from Force for a GOD DAMN SECOND. I know we don't know anyone in here, but the actors actually seem strong! This was a fun preview.

We Are: Lots of couples. PondPhuwin, MarcPawin, WinnySatang, Aou and that other dude. What is this, a New Siwaj show? I might have enough to watch next year without needing to watch ANOTHER school drama. We'll see.

LIKELY NOT

Enigma 2: Not a fan of Win Metawin, and didn't watch the trailer.

High School Frenemy: I understand this is a K-drama remake of School 2013, which I haven't seen. I... am trying to understand the story here, but happy for View/June/Mark/Prom to be in a show together, and I'll pay more attention when the show's closer to airing.

Ploy's Yearbook: Did not watch the trailer. I understand there's a storyline with Joong's character romancing his adopted sister. HARD. NO.

My 2022 in dramaland!!!

I really wish I could have more time to make a bigger post (mostly so I can talk more about the dramas I LOVED) but it is what it is and it’s always fun to try and describe something you either hated or loved in a few sentences, so in the order I watched them:

My TOP5 first:

Dream Garden: Technically premiered last year but it aired like a kdrama (2 eps per week) so it took me 2 months to watch. Not excellent but far from being bad. A lot different from most modern romances in cdramas I’ve watched since it was a psychological thriller romance (with a super slow slowburn). Here because it was the only Gong Jun drama I got this year. Ugh. Cdramas, you know? Totally a rec!

Extraordinary Attorney Woo: Anyone who watched it knows why. It just had a hold of me since the very first scene. Park Eun Bin was her usual magnificent self. Also Kang Tae Oh and his character, Junho were a delight. He’s my pick for best male lead this year. Greenest Flag in whole dramaland. I don’t want a S2, but I want another drama starring Eun Bin and TaeOh. Fingers crossed!

F4 Thailand: Because it technically was/is my first thai drama. I KNOW the drama was not perfect and a lot of people jumped ship halfway through but come on, the story is completely outdated yet they keep remaking it, why? Cause we watch it. We love and obsess with the story as much as Thyme obsesses with Gorya in every version. Would love to watch the whole main cast again in another project.

Love Between Fairy and Devil: On the surface, it’s just like any other xianxia... except it’s not. It’s so MUCH more. It’s all in the execution. I cried I laughed I cheered and wish I got more of the happy ending. Just a tiny little bit more, drama!! I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Also, I discovered Dylan Wang can truly act. So the drama was full of surprises.

Revenge of Others: Orphan girl moves to an awful school full of little psychos to avenge the death of her dear brother. Girl meets boy. Boy discovers has a brain tumor but he’s also quite the vigilante. They develop an amazing bond and relationship that most romances in kdramas wish they could have. A really well executed whodunnit drama, with interesting plot twists. I was pleasantly surprised that the writers managed to tie in all the loose ends and gave us a satisfying ending and truly a happy one for the two main leads. SUPER REC!!

All of Us are Dead: THE POOR KIDS. I rooted so hard for the kids and no one ever came to save them. My faves survived and that’s the reason I’m watching S2. Rec? At your own risk lol. Also, the title is the biggest spoiler.

Bulgasal: I always forget this drama aired this year. I actually loved it, but it needed something more. Maybe a kiss?? lol I don’t know, on paper it was perfect but something was missing. Totally a rec, though.

Business Proposal: It came out of knowhere and was my first enjoyable romcom in kdramaland in a really long time. For me it’s a classic already. Would love to watch the second leads in their own drama, though. Not on my TOP5 bc really good and great dramas came after it.

Tomorrow: Please know that I’m a huge Rowoon fan before you read the next sentence. He was a terrible miscast in this. Everyone was crazy about the romance with Lee So Hyuk and Kim HeeSun and I would’ve loved to be as well if only they ever had more than 3 minutes together per ep. Just when I was getting into it, drama took me somewhere else. Not a rec. Sorry Rowoon. Sorry whole cast. Love you. Come back to us with something better

Not Me: Not sure why I chose this as my first Thai BL, but I’m so glad I did. Very different even among its own genre. Chemistry and makeout kiss scenes were AMAZING for the 2 main couples. Give this drama a chance but be prepared for the activist theme and the political talk. These are youngsters trying to change their world for better. Also, the OST is magic. P.S. That scene in ep 7 with OTP holding hands under the Pride Flag must have its own monument.

Bad Buddy: I always thought people were overreacting when the drama was airing. I thought “it must not be that good”. Oh but it was and I ate my words lol Fun, romantic, bit of a Romeo&Juliet themed, and the twist at the end?? Delightful. I cheered!!! SUPER REC!! Btw I also loved the OST of this one.

Love all Play: Back to kdramas. Badminton, romance, a charming male lead but terrible families. Another show that came out of knowhere but it was actually really inspiring and cozy to watch, in the first half. I loved the OTP. The found family dynamics in the team but there was TOO MUCH angst, really unnecessary and that’s why it’s not on my top 5. It had a a super happy ending though, and I loved that. Rec? tbh yes, really bingeworthy. And you would feel the angst less.

Sh**ting stars: For a romcom, I have to admit drama’s best joke was its title. It was enjoyable but not that memorable for me. Kim YoungDae is really good in this genre, though. He should stick to these kind of roles. The Oh NamJoo kind (where my Extraordinary You fans at?) He shines the best like that. Rec? Honestly, yeah. Good for a binge if there’s nothing else to watch!

Kiss Sixth Sense: Romcom, cliche, full of tropes. AMAZING chemistry between the leads. Because of fate, he could hear really well, superpower level. And she could see the future of the people she kissed lol drama’s biggest mistep was that it took itself too seriously. Also, the last episode was really bad. Technically a happy ending though. Not a rec.

Yumi’s Cells S2: Jinyoung was the best part and I regret nothing. Except the part where I loved and had so much fun with S1. This sequel though, did not spark joy, on the contrary, it killed it. What happened, Yumi??

Remarriage and Desire: Makjang. 6 eps. Happy ending. What can I say? It was great to relieve stress and at the time, I truly needed that. Rec? Yeah. It’s crazy, it’s soapy, it’s stupid, but it’s fun, short and its plot twists have plot twists. Also I’m sorry but I watched it in spanish dub and it was even more hilarious.

Fanletter, please: Romcom. She’s a top actress. He’s a single dad taking care of his young and sick daugther. Sounds like a downer, but it truly wasn’t. Only four eps, and the chemistry between the leads was soooo good that I want them in another, longer drama. A total rec, for sure!!!

May I help You: Enjoyable drama but, as per usual, something was missing in the second half. The romance was nowhere to be found after OTP got together so maybe that’s what, at least for me. Drama shifted genres. The plot twist on the actual baddie was surprising but not shocking. Rec? Yes? Maybe? Well, I love Lee JunYoung and Hyeri’s acting got better imo.

Summer Strike: I honestly think the best thing about this is that the eps were only about 40 min long and that there were only 12 of them. A longer drama with a longer runtime would’ve lost the desired effect. In my opinion, the best slice of life kdrama of the year and really inspiring, even if it made me cry at times.

Under the Queen’s Umbrella: Iit honestly doesn’t sound like my thing. But I kept watching spoilers and gave it a chance. I’m still watching but I know how it ends and I think it’s a pretty great drama. I love the acting, the stories, the Queen and her sons and have never rooted for someone to kill their mother-in-law so much. Also, Queen is mom of the year. Total Rec.

Dishonorable mentions (shame on you, dramas! You were suppossed to be be better!):

2521: I think even the people who did not watch the drama know why. I made a rant post about it. It was not that they didn’t end up together. It was the how they got there what bothered me and traumatized me. Blacklisting the director and writer for life.

Love in Contract: Look. It took me out of a mini drama slump and I’ll always cherish that. Not the best drama (far from it), not a single bit made sense in the second half, but it honestly wasn’t as bad as people made it sound. Also, happy ending!!! Yay!!! Put it here because of the second lead. That dude was a psycho.

Note: The second male lead in this drama shares his award for most annoying second lead with the one from Cheer Up, cause I honestly think they’re one and the same annoying, entitled and deluded asshole!

Cheer Up: Conflicted. I loved this show when it was a fun coming of age story with youngsters in college, full of dreams and hopes and just wanting to cheer in a club after class. But sometimes it was like Bring it On meets Scream. Or something weird like that. Also, that asshole second lead was truly hateable. I honestly don’t know how I got past him and finished the drama. Last ep got a lot of things right, a pity drama spent so much on the love triangle.

Silent: jdrama. I actually finished this because I love Meguro Ren and became invested in a secondary couple (their story was soooo sweet) but this drama was more of a downer than anything else. Also ten eps of conversations, of taking big steps towards healing (or so we thought) only to realize male lead is still in the same place he was in the first ep? Doesn’t spark joy. Silently frustrating, despite the happy ending. Watch at your own risk.

When you hear the television inside as you’re in the process of inserting your key into the lock of your upscale apartment door, you freeze. Last time you checked, you didn’t have a roommate, and you definitely didn’t have a significant other hanging out in there. Your heart starts racing. Should you call the police? Ever since making it big in tennis, competing in all sorts of national and international tournaments, you’ve had a lot of crazy fans vying for your attention. Some do it in sweet ways, and others… not so sweet. However, no one’s actually ever showed up at your home.

You take a deep breath and twist the lock, pushing the door open anyways. There’s no way the man at the front desk would just let anyone walk right up. Perhaps it’s maintenance?

But no. Instead of seeing a worker dressed in uniform and fixing a leak, you see Linda Drysdale lounging in the armchair of your living room, legs crossed with a naturally unamused demeanor as her blue eyes flicker across the flat screen TV. She glances up at you as if she’s lived there her entire life, eyebrow lifted. “Finally. I didn’t realize tennis practice took so much time, how many methods can possibly be involved in hitting a ball back and forth?”

You look at her in disbelief for a few moments, trying to process that your ex-boyfriend’s mother is inside your home right now despite the fact that you and Ransom broke up three years ago. You aren’t even offended by her words; you’re aware of how blunt and straightforward the seemingly harsh lady can be- she was practically a true mother-in-law to you when you and Ransom were dating. You finally speak. “Linda. What are you doing here? You can’t just- how did you even-”

“The young man in the lobby clearly isn’t getting paid enough. A twenty was all it took. Might want to move somewhere else before he just casually allows a serial killer to walk in.” She rolls her eyes, then mumbles under her breath, “Or my son.”

“What?” you ask, and she shakes her head, looking up with a slight authoritative smile crossing her lips. “We need to talk, Y/N. I’m just going to get straight to the point. My son is ruining his life, as per usual, and I’ve had enough of it. I did everything I could to get him out of this damn lawsuit, to keep him out of jail, and he’s just-- Christ, he’s an ungrateful brat, that’s what he is.” She looks fed up, the sharpness in her eyes seeming as though she’s ready to strangle the man. “Drinking himself to death, fucking a new girl every night, on every single drug you can think of-- he’s a little piece of shit, even without being able to leave the house.”

“And you’re telling me all of this, why…?”

“Because he loves you.” She states simply, and you hate that the words make your heart race. “I know he still loves you, and that you’re the only girl on this planet he’ll ever love. He’ll listen to you, Y/N,” she insists, “and so you need to go see him. Better yet, just date him again. He was a significantly better person when he was with you.”

You look at her shocked, slowly shaking your head as you let out a quiet scoff. “Linda. He tried to kill someone. He’s the reason your father died. How can you ask me to go back to him? Why do you even care what happens to him, after everything he did?”

“Because he’s my son. And maybe you’ll understand one day, when you have a child of your own. But what I understand is that you could turn him into someone his family can approve of. Or, at least, even tolerate.” She adds with a roll of her eyes before continuing, “He tried to be good for you, Y/N, you know that.”

“Good?” You look at her incredulously, starting to get a little heated. “He told me he didn’t want to be with me anymore just because I was trying to have my own career! He couldn’t stand me putting so much time into tennis. He hated me playing tennis. That’s not what a “good” boyfriend does, okay? It’s not my responsibility to fix him back up when he couldn’t even be a support for me in the first place.”

She quickly waves her hands, frowning slightly. “Okay, okay. Fine, don’t think about getting back together with him. Just see him, at least. Please.” She sighs deeply, looking down for a moment as she rubs her temples before looking back up at you. “I’m begging you here, Y/N. I can’t just stand here and watch this boy waste all my hard earned money for his own selfish needs. Hell, if I could, I’d just stick him in jail now if I could. He doesn’t deserve this freedom at this point.”

You roll your eyes, crossing your arms over your chest as you look away. “What a nurturing mother,” you mumble under her breath, and although she hears you, she doesn’t remark on it. She sighs again instead, looking at you somewhat frustrated and helpless. “Just go over to his house, only for an hour. Talk to him. Convince him to stop being such a prick.”

You look at her somewhat frustrated, but finally sigh. You are the only one who’s ever been able to get through to Ransom, and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t concerned when you heard the news. The Ransom you knew was an asshole, but he certainly wasn’t a murderer. Something clearly changed in him since you broke up with him, and so maybe Linda was right.

“An hour.” You finally agree, though give her a warning look. “And if he gets disrespectful or crosses any lines, I’m leaving. I’m not a miracle worker, Linda.” She looks relieved nonetheless, immediately nodding her head. “Of course. Thank you, Y/N.” The two of you stand there for a moment before she lifts an eyebrow, looking at you. “Well? Get over there before he gives himself alcohol poisoning.” You blink, about to protest but sigh. You figure it’s best to get this over with anyways- if you don’t, you’ll be up all night stressing about it. “Fine. But you need to leave first, you can’t- you can’t just hang out in my house when I’m not here, you know?”

“Oh, I’m leaving. This place is a shoebox.” Linda looks around somewhat disdainfully before pausing, looking to you with a smile. “But you’ve… decorated it very well.” You roll your eyes, gesturing to the door. “Goodbye, Linda.”

Her smile remains as she nonchalantly waves, heading out the door.

As you come up to Ransom’s door, your heart is racing. You can hear loud music and obnoxious giggling from inside, no doubt Ransom is throwing some kind of get together- or probably more of an intimate gathering featuring scantily clad women who throw themselves at his good looks and money. You glance over at his BMW shining in the driveway, barely scoffing to yourself. Of all the things to keep intact, he would make sure it was his car. You were with him when he bought that car, and it was probably one of the only “girls” he had ever loved in his life.

You being the other one, of course. You know that at one point, Ransom Drysdale loved you. You can’t help but wonder if that’s still the case.

You take a deep breath and ring the doorbell. The talking and laughing doesn’t stop; these girls are clearly unbothered, but you hear footsteps.

And then he appears, dressed in a t-shirt and perfectly fitting jeans, his brown hair slightly tousled and his cocky smirk across his lips- until his intoxicated brain registers who you are. He blinks in surprise, smile fading from his lips for just a split second- then quickly returns to his normal self, most likely realizing he absolutely must look composed and confident. “Y/N. I knew you’d come crawling back to me eventually. Took you a while, though, I’m kinda busy right now.”

You stare at him for a few moments; you thought you’d be nervous and apprehensive, but now, as if by magic, any feeling of uncertainty slips away. It’s almost impressive how he has this effect on people, but within less than one minute of this conversation, you’ve already had enough.

“Shut the fuck up, Ransom.” You find yourself saying, suddenly pushing right past him and grabbing his arm in the process. “We need to talk.” You practically drag him into the kitchen, ignoring the confused and even irritated looks of the half naked women on his couch clearly having been in the middle of enjoying his attention. It’s surprisingly easy to maneuver him, most likely because he’s a little too drunk.

“Wow, hellcat. You really missed me, huh? Unable to find anyone who’s a better fuck than me, I take it? Alright, alright, I’ll squeeze you in. I have to say, I definitely missed your tight little-”

He’s cut off by a sharp sting on his cheek when you slap him across the face, his lips parting into a shocked ‘o’ almost immediately as his blue eyes stare at you in complete shock. Even you’re a little shocked upon where this sudden boldness is coming from, but you decide you’re on a roll and that there’s no need to question it. You came here to say something, and you’re going to say it. You don’t even let him respond. Not that he has the words to, anyways.

“Who the fuck are you anymore, huh? Why are you acting like this? And not just a douchebag fuckboy, either, but a full on killer? What the hell is going through your brain?” you practically scream at him, and he blinks in surprise before his features suddenly become defensive. “What, do you think it has to do with you? Our break up? You think I’m just so tormented, torn apart, that I’m not over you?”

“I- no, when the fuck did I say-”

“Well then why are you here, Y/N? Why do you, of all people, need to be here right now? Who are you to come show your concern and your goddamn disgust when you’re the one who dumped me?!” His voice is just as loud as yours if not louder, the vein in his neck bulging from anger, his eyes practically a shade darker. You throw your hands up in frustration, retorting, “Why does that even matter, Ransom? Can I not be concerned that the former love of my life turned into a goddamn murderer? And then his lips suddenly crash against yours, his hands grabbing your waist and pinning your small frame against the cool counter, a husky growl of frustration escaping his throat as he kisses you. Rough. You gasp, starting to press your hands against his chest, wanting to push him off… until you don’t. You’re kissing him back fiercely, though still angry as ever, moving your hands to grip his muscular biceps as you dig your nails in. “I fucking hate you,” you hiss against his lips, and he scoffs in between kisses, barely groaning from the feeling of your sharp nails leaving indents in his skin. He’s turned on, and you know it.

“No you fucking don’t.”

There’s no need for foreplay. There’s no time or patience for that. After easily sitting you up on the counter, he pulls your shirt up over your head only to connect your lips again, his teeth pulling on your lower lip roughly as he unhooks your bra and tosses it aside. His hands find your gym shorts and shove them down- he quite literally rips your underwear off, making you let out a muffled squeal of surprise into his open mouth. Every time you got stressed, you’d bake- Ransom would always lovingly make fun of you for this, hence how “cupcake” began. However, he doesn’t give you much time to dwell on this- perhaps on purpose. He’s most likely realized he fucked up, God forbid he show any sign of affection. You let out a short moan when his broad fingers rub your clit, his other hand using the grip on your hair to tilt your head up so your brown eyes are locked firmly onto his blue ones.

“You like that? You see what you’ve left behind for these past few years? You couldn’t possibly have forgetten how good I fuck you, right?” he speaks through husky breaths, panting just as much as you as he rubs. You moan lewdly, though your teeth clench in frustration. “Just fuck me already, Ransom, stop… stop fucking talking…”

He snickers and suddenly stops rubbing, leaving you feeling slightly disappointed despite the fact you asked for it. Hastily unbuckling his belt and pushing down his jeans and briefs, he wraps his fingers around his throbbing length, groaning lowly to himself as he pumps his shaft. Pressing it against your entrance, he wastes no time in thrusting inside you, gripping your hips tightly as a grunt of pleasure escapes his throat.

“Fuck. Fuck. I forgot… how fucking tight… your pussy feels around my cock…” he groans with half shut eyes as he bucks his hips forward, tilting his head back. “God damn!”

“Ransom!” You hear a girl’s voice come from the kitchen doorway, gasping from both surprise and pleasure as you look up- normally, you’d be embarrassed, but right now, you couldn’t care less. Your body is practically being rocked upwards from how powerful he is, your head buried into his neck as you bite and suck desperately only making him groan even more.

“You still on birth control?” he breathes out gruffly into your shoulder as his hands cup your ass, his teeth nipping and biting harshly. “You still getting checked regularly for STDs?” you retort breathlessly, though to be honest, you’re not worried about that despite his recent history. He may treat his things like shit, but he keeps himself well maintained all to uphold his little rich boy image. He’s actually much more hygienic than one would imagine, and has standards with the women he sleeps with despite coming off as such a playboy.

“Yes, yes, I’m on birth control, come inside me,” you whine demandingly, moving your hands up to grip his brown hair tightly, messing it up even more than before. He smirks, grunting louder as he uses his hold on your ass to rock your hips towards his, the sound and feel of skin slapping putting you into overdrive. “Ransom…! Shit, Ransom, I’m close, fuck, I’m coming!” He groans just from hearing you, chest heaving as he keeps going, beads of sweat appearing on his forehead. “Come for me, doll, fuck…!”

With his past and reputation people would think he’d at least get defensive when other people flirt with you

He knows what players are looking for since he was one. He’s been in their shoes

Yet??? He’s indifferent towards everything???

It takes a lot to get Sylvain worked up. His laid back way of approaching conflict tends to rub off on those around him and therefore helps in avoiding arguments

It would take either you expressing your discomfort or for the other party to attempt physical contact to make him hostile

Even then though he’ll simply push them back before leading you away. No harm no foul, just in and out before things escalate

When it comes to big decisions or outbreaks he also follows a neutral approach. He waits for you to express your own wants before giving his opinions

You want to fight in the next battle? Cool, you’re registered. What battalion are you with? Well, looks like your going a different route than him. Are you sure that’s the one you want to follow? Yeah? Nothing he can do then aside from wish you luck.

Doesn’t mean he won’t be concerned at all though. I mean, it’s natural to be.

His mindset is that if he doesn’t worry then you won’t either. Anxiety is contagious and you don’t need extra stress in bad situations.

Annette:

She doesn’t w a n t to be like this, but sometimes it’s hard to hold back jealousy

Annette is one of those people that likes attention from the person she cares about. It makes her happy, so being ignored for someone else would really hurt

She’s nothing special in this regard. Like any person in a relationship she’ll have her moments, but for the most part everything is fine and dandy

The whole reason she’s above average is because of other reasons

She’ll nag you about safety precautions with logic from her studies. Being a goodie-two-shoes from a young age has her nerves spiking whenever you take needless risks

If she wasn’t reading up on faith magic before then she is now

The fear of being left behind is also something to chalk up on this list. If you’re gone longer than expected she’ll become antsy

The others can always tell when she’s worried. Annette isn’t very good at hiding that kind of aura from taking over

All in all, she’s not a very protective person. A better term would probably be “anxious”

Mercedes:

While she isn’t the staple of ‘overprotective,’ she is still exceedingly mindful of possible disasters

Are you really surprised? Mercedes cares about everyone no matter who they are.

She legit prays for the souls of her enemies. The woman is a saint in human skin

This also negates any jealous bone in her body. If she ever does feel uneasy it’s just a quick pang in the chest and then it’s gone

She doesn’t like to dwell on ‘what ifs’ because then she can’t live in the present- where people need her

She can seriously be a bit much other times though. If you even sneeze near her she’ll ask to take your temperature

Doesn’t matter where, who, when, etc. Mercedes takes care of everyone

Don’t ever deny her either. She can be pushy if the situation calls for it and sometimes it’s just easier to let her do what she wants

She’ll pray to the goddess for your safety before any battle, and send you off with extra healing potions for the times she won’t be near

During these times she’s extra vulnerable and is more open to showing her own personal strife to others. She tries to keep optimistic but nobody’s perfect. If it becomes too much she may seek to talk with a close friend (aka Annette)

However, her thoughts remain unclouded when others are in need. She suppresses her personal feelings until those in front of her are taken care of

Omg I'm so glad you enjoyed reading it! I hope you're ready for this MASSIVE answer and you don't get too bored reading this one!

CHERRY MAGIC!!!!!! It instantly became a comfort show for me, as it did for many others!

ADACHIADACHIADACHIADACHI. Adachi is 100% my fave. I never fully understood what a comfort character was. I was like, "yeah! I love Tine also!" But. Adachi is the definition of comfort for me. I see so much of myself in him! Everyone sees him and is like "babie. Must protecc." And honestly? Me too. How can one character be so damn CUTE??!?!? One of my favourite moments is him seeing Kurosawa after the almost-kiss. He just like, sees him, and gets so panicked 🥺 the way his arms just flail about makes me smile like an idiot.

But like, on a deeper level, this drama makes me believe I'm worthy of love. The idea that someone like Kurosawa could be THAT infatuated with you, even though you're an awkward virgin lmao. The point of watching these dramas is to get lost in a story, right? See a situation you want so badly but you know will never realistically happen? The entire premise of the show is just really enticing to me. I am Adachi, Adachi is me. Also, the thing he said in ep6 about not having a clear dream in life? Yeah. I felt that. I'm so envious of people who have passions they work so hard for, it gives them a form of purpose. Like Adachi, sometimes I feel like I'm living in a "daze". I feel like I don't really have any specific passions or skills that I want to develop into a career. Sometimes I just wish I had ambition. Adachi makes me feel so seen and like I'm not the only person who feels like this. The kinds of characters that usually make good protagonists are characters with a clear goal/passion. In most shows this obviously really works, but I can never relate to them personally. It's really special for me to see a character who's similar to me in this way.

Kurosawa is such an amazing character too!!!!! His gay little heart 🥺 on another level, he's just so?? Respectful??? 7. YEARS. 7 years of pining and he holds himself back so well!! He's been waiting for this relationship for so long but is so patient, willing to take things slowly for Adachi. He flirts shamelessly (as he should) but never to the point where Adachi was too uncomfortable.

He cares so much about Adachi :(. But also, even before he liked Adachi, he could tell he was uncomfortable with the drinking thing, so he DOWNED the wine lmao. Clearly he's just a lovely person all round who's really socially aware.

As for other characters:

• Tsuge's chaotic energy is iconic

• Minato a lovely little dance machine :))

• Rokaku deserves the world, my excitable kiss interruptor :(((

I ADORED ep8!!! I LIVE for established Adasawa! Adachi coming out to Tsuge :((( I'm so proud of Adachi coming to terms with his feelings and being confident enough to share his relationship with his closest friend. Coming out is not easy and he did so well 🥺

Adachi and Tsuge are so useless bless them 😂 Kurosawa really said "well I guess I have to take these two socially awkward disasters under my wing." Adachi and Tsuge are such a chaotic duo, I love that they can communicate just by touching each other, and omg when Kurosawa said his name Tsuge was "wait maybe I know everything about you already" and if that isn't friendship idk what is

Also Kurosawa making up a poem in his head about Adachi???? Peak romance. Also iconic. I'M A SUCKER FOR HAND HOLDING SCENES SO I DIED. "I like him. I like him. I like him!!" HOW CUTE CAN YOU GET FJKHDSHSKSK

I also got another arm flailing moment when Kurosawa almost got the wrong idea about Adachi and Tsuge!! CAN ADACHI STOP BEING SO CUTE MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT. How on earth his boyfriend is still alive I have no idea.

There are so many other shows and ships I love. I feel like I'll probably miss some, but here we go. These aren't rankings at all, just like, lists lol.

1. 2gether

This show means so much to me. It was the first time I watched a bl week by week and it made it so much more special?? I valued scenes so much more than when I binge shows and they would like, look at each other and I'd have a heart attack. They made the first part of my quarantine bearable bc I always had something to look forward to every Friday. I actually really enjoyed quarantine overall as an introvert (not to be insensitive about the literal deaths the pandemic has caused), but I really enjoyed constantly thinking about how long it was until Friday. I'm massively emotionally attached to all of the characters in this show you have no idea. Every single one. The found family of it all,, the way all of the characters have relationships. Still2gether did a phenomenal job of showcasing all of the unexpected but very welcome dynamics and relationships, platonic and romantic alike. I could blabber about this show for so long I'll spare u for now

2. YYY

Is it well written? No. Did I enjoy it anyway?? You know it! I told you how much I love the found family trope. UGH. THIS FAMILY. Also, seeing the feminine side of the LGBT+ community represented positively warmed my heart. There needs to be more bls that do that! Celebrate femininity!! There's nothing wrong with being camp as fuck! It's so much fun!!! This show made me so happy :))

3. Start up

I'm currently obsessed. It's my first Kdrama and holy shit this is what the hype is about. The budget!! The acting! Top notch. On a sad note I really wish bls got that much funding behind them. My heart aches for a complicated story with fully developed characters and plotlines, that just happens to have a gay main couple/character. Wishful thinking for now at least. Anyways, I'm massively emotionally attached to Halmeoni and Jipyeong. Team Jipyeong all the way (even tho Dalmi's obviously gonna end up with Dosan, and I'm happy for them!). All I need is a happy ending for my darling Jipyeong. Please give him one. Also, if anything happens to Halmeoni I will WEEP.

4. Cherry magic is obviously here but I've ranted about that enough already 😂

5. 3 will be free

I would never have expected gmm to make a series like this! But they went and did THAT. Wild. It was such a healthy representation of a poly relationship. The themes of feminism were so well handled and powerful, the chemistry was off the CHARTS, I was hooked from start to finish! Time for a rewatch? I think so.

6. Feel good

Not an Asian drama, but still gay as FUCK. It's written by my wife Mae Martin who also stars in it, and I have to say, it blew me away. Story time!! My friend irl recommended it to me without saying it was Mae, so I was like "okay sure I'll put it on my to watch list I guess" without much motivation to watch it. But as soon as I found out it was Mae I watched it and I've never looked back lol. Once I finished I sent my friend a splurge of messages about my feelings. The series touches on issues like addiction, sexuality and gender. "I'm not a boy. I'm not even a girl. I'm like a failed version of both." That shit HURT.

There's a scene near the end which has really stayed with me. So Mae's character is a comedian and she does a set making jokes about the stuff that happened in the series and oh my GOD. The way I CRIED. It made me realise that people who make jokes about their experiences are using humour as a coping mechanism and when people say "Haha I have daddy issues isn't it funny" we have to remember to be respectful. It's never okay to make jokes about someone else's trauma. Don't make a big deal of it but just don't be a dick.

Anyways I could go on but would 100% recommend this series!

7. HIStory 2 crossing the line

My first bl! This series is the reason I'm so obsessed with bl lmao. The main couple are so soft :( this little series will always hold a special place in my heart!

8. Sotus

My first gmm series, we've come a long way. I miss Kong and Arthit :(

9. Dark blue kiss

Such a brilliant series. I trust P'Aof (director) with my life. This series touches on issues that are so important and deserve to be talked about so much more in bls. This is what happens when you let LGBT people tell LGBT stories! They do it with such care and love!! One of my favourite lines is "I may like men, but I'll never like your brother." One of my biggest let peeves is "I don't like men, I only like x." Like, I get the business behind it, they don't want to make the character gay to make them available for girls to fantasise about. Which is disgusting. But Mork really said "no. ❤" and I LOVE IT.

10. The shipper

I could go on and on about how underrated I think this series is. This series took over from 2gether on Fridays, and while I didn't think about this series constantly like I did with 2gether, this series made my quarantine brighter. Fridays meant I was gonna laugh at least once and forget about life just for a short while. The humour in this series is so fucking dumb lmao, but I'm here for it.

I've seen people talk about the shipper as a bl but I disagree. I think it's better described as a series with bl aspects. The main themes are friendship, family, dealing with loss, respecting boundaries of people you admire, and one of the main messages is about making sure the people close to you know how much they mean to you. Don't get me wrong, the majority of the series is over the top humour, but by the end of it I was personally really attached to the characters and their feelings. Overall I really enjoyed this series but I don't see anyone properly talk about it :(

11. Gaya sa pelikula

A series made by gay people for gay people. Shows like this are so important. This show really healed my soul with how brilliant the representation was :(( "remember we talked about microagressions" the way that means Vlad is constantly educating Karl about LGBT stuff, UGH. SO GOOD. Also this show has the most realistic representation of a crush I've ever seen lmao, soft Vlad is the best Vlad.

12. My engineer

My happy little Saturday show :( I miss the shit writing, shit acting and soft story of this series so much. I'm so fond of this series, I watched it after the horrible ep12 of 2gether and it really made me happy. I'm looking forward to season 2, but Ramking's novel goes DOWNHILL from here on. I know tricreation wouldn't allow the final chapter's scenes, but the entire story is so problematic and unenjoyable :(. The only valid scene is King's coming out scene but that's literally it. And the collar scene can stay lmao.

13. Oxygen

Another soft saturday series! I love this series so much, all of the couples are so bloody healthy and it makes me so happy. The communication is amazing!! THIS is how you show healthy relationships!!!

14. The gifted

S1 was so amazing!! I loved all of it! The only part of s2 we'll talk about is timegracethird. Time best boy!! Grace a feminist queen! When future Grace said they would be friends for a long time that made me so happy :(( also pangwave canon

15. Until we meet again

So I talked about the healthy relationships in oxygen. But uwma really showed the healthiest relationship ever. DeanPharm are just the softest little humans :( I would die for Pharm. He's the closest I got to a comfort character before Adachi. I just have to PROTECT HIM. My motherly instincts really kick in when I see him lmao.

The storyline of this series is just breathtaking. And the ending? I don't think I've ever cried that much. At all. It was so fucking beautiful 🥺

16. My gear and your gown

I really liked this show! Honestly I don't think I'll ever rewatch it but I definitely enjoyed it. The way Pai just seemed to breathe freely for the first time when his parents accepted his sexuality :(((( my baby :( also purefolk were brilliant

These two are the definition of romance. They mean the fucking world to me. The fact that their story is apparently gonna be continued in some form makes me so. So. Happy. I cannot begin to describe it. My bet is on a special episode and ugh I'm so EXCITED.

Thonhonchonlatee in general is enjoyable but I don't like Thon at all. It's such a shame bc I was so excited for Khaotung and Podd to be in a series together :((. BUT. Aini have grabbed my heart. 4. Ramking

One of my fave ships. As I mentioned, I'm apprehensive about s2, but s1 ramking is such a beautiful story. It's just about 2 boys falling in love, no complications. Plant boy who's afraid of dogs falls in love with quiet boy who loves dogs but is afraid of children. Iconic. Also chemistry outsold, I THINK ABOUT THE KISS CONSTANTLY. When I mentioned the acting is shit in this series (shit is harsh, I mean awkward), I did not mean Perth and Lay in the slightest. They really nailed their roles and I loved it.

5. Professor Layton x Claire

You 100% won't get this reference but I grew up with the Professor Layton games and holy shit do they hold up. They're so amazingly written with beautiful stories and the most lovable characters in the world. Layton's intellect, loving nature and surprising athleticism are admirable. Adachi is the character I relate to most, but if I was gonna choose a character to comfort me irl, Layton's your man. His voice is so comforting by nature. I'm blabbering at this point but the point is him and Claire are the only het pairing that matters.

These are just the ships that I felt should be separate from their shows. I love all of the ships from the shows I mentioned.

Oof this got horrifically long, I haven't had a proper chance to rant about most of these shows so I really let it out lol. I hope you've watched at least some of these shows and I didn't just rant to u about 12 shows you've never heard of 😂

Thoughts on Sarazanmai Ep1: “I Want To Be Connected, But I Want To Lie”

Oh boy, are y’all ready for Ikuhara’s newest Wild Ride as we experience the joys of young boys transforming into kappas and stealing magical orbs out of people’s anuses and finding out about their deepest secrets?

Because I’m not.

I’m not ready at all.

But I’m still gonna try and be here every week writing about my thoughts on each episode because I can’t help but respect someone who goes so far and does so much, all for The Gays.

I’m kinda regretting the fact that the only Ikuhara anime I’ve watched before this is Utena, since this seems way more similar to both Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi, based on what I know about those series. I’ll get to them eventually, lol. It’ll definitely wait until after this is done, since I don’t think my mind can physically handle watching multiple Ikuhara anime at the same time.

I can really see what people who went to the pre-screening meant about how even the very first scenes seem packed with foreshadowing, and about how they were surprised that this was allowed to air on TV at all.

At first I thought that that might have just been a bit of an exaggeration, but nah not really. Ikuhara really be out here making us look at some boys-turned-kappas acting as maybe not so metaphorical anal beads to extract a magical Desire Organ [tm] out of a giant zombie’s anus. And lest we forget about whatever the fuck was going on in the scene with Keppi extracting Kazuki’s shirikodama. LEST WE FORGET.

I’m still kinda worried about whether or not Ikuhara is gonna be able to actually tell a well-paced and coherent story in just 11 episodes, but thus far the actual meat of the story in terms of the character dynamics seems relatively focused enough that it probably won’t be a bit deal. It at least looks like the series will just focus on the main trio [plus our favourite Gay Cop Dads, and also Sara], with the supporting cast being there to support the character arcs of the main trio. So hopefully Ikuhara isn’t trying to juggle too many things at once here.

I’m not even gonna try and seriously speculate at length about most of what happened in the first half of this episode since most of it seemed like stuff designed to make sense on a rewatch, but I did think almost immediately that the whole dramatic monologue about ‘not wanting to lose the connection this time’, mixed with some of the weird cuts and time skips and references to memory erasure and dreams, gave me a bit of a “time loop” vibe. Though knowing Ikuhara I doubt it’d be just as simple as “time got looped after things happened and ended up badly”.

There’s also probably gonna be a whole lot of symbolism based around kappas, and other parts of Japanese folklore/history that’ll probably go over my head, so I’ll probably just leave that to other people to talk about, lol.

Based on the promotional material I kinda pieced it together, but it looks like this is, at least at first, basically gonna play out like a monster of the week magical boy show where the main trio fight a new zombie. Which will probably be a good way to make each episode have it’s own satisfying set-up and conclusion while also setting up all sorts of other plot threads.

And on the note of the whole zombie thing, we don’t really have any idea what’s going on with them or what their goals are beyond the fact that they also have their own desires they’re trying to keep locked up, but it looks like the Gay Cop Dads are intentionally setting them off and turning them into zombies, based on the final bit of the episode. There’s not much to say about these two at the moment, but I feel like their motives and actions are gonna be a core part of whatever this series has to say about the BL genre and societal views/expectations towards gay/bi men, if it has anything to say about that at all. I also wouldn’t be too surprised if there’s some stuff about monogamy vs polyamory, given that their official joint twitter account is called keeponly1luv. And if anyone’s gonna be out there making in-character official anime character twitter accounts plot-relevant, it’s this dude.

Also, these two remind me a lot of Mikage from Utena already, so that’s cool. That whole arc was one of my favourite parts of Utena, so if we can get a whole season of not one, but two mysterious queer anime dudes provoking people’s innermost desires and conflicts for unknown reasons, then that’s even more cool.

I guess I should actually get around to talking about the main trio of the show. I suppose that’s pretty important, lol. There’s really not much to say about any of them at the moment since this episode was more about introducing the setting and style of this whole show rather than really showing off the characters, but I really like this episode’s whole central twist with Kazuki. I didn’t expect it at all, but it was really cool. I certainly wasn’t expecting his big secret to be that he secretly cross-dresses as Sara and basically roleplays as her to send texts to his little brother. I’m guessing that Kazuki for one reason or another feels unable to have a direct connection with his little brother, and so he’s doing this whole complicated daily routine of dressing up as Sara and sending texts to him because it’s the only way he can connect with him. It looks like they live together and even sleep in the same room, so if there’s any sort of distance between them it’s probably an emotional one.

Also, on the note of Kazuki’s whole thing in this episode, I have a feeling that the subtitles using feminine pronouns for the person he’s connecting with might be inaccurate if he was actually just talking about connecting with his little brother. Who I at least think is a boy. I was actually kinda thrown off at first at the implication that Kazuki had a secret girlfriend, lmao.

There’s also not a whole lot to say about Toi and Enta thus far, but it looks like another part of the whole monster of the week formula is that after each fight, one of their secrets is gonna get telepathically broadcast to the rest of them, like what happened in this episode with Kazuki, so there’s clearly a lot to unravel with both of them as well. Going by the OP theme, it seems like there’s gonna be importance placed on Kazuki’s relationship with his little brother, Toi’s relationship with his older brother, and Enta’s relationship with Kazuki. So I can’t help but wonder if one of the ‘twists’ later on will be about the idea of Enta having a crush on Kazuki. It looks like he was packaging a present for him early in the episode which got stolen by the kappa zombie underling things, so that might come up later.

I’ve also got no real predictions about what kind of role Sara is gonna have in this, especially not after whatever the fuck happened at the end of the Gay Cop Dads spin-off manga. At the very least I think she’ll probably be kinda like the shadow girls in Utena. Ikuhara really likes having characters who exist mostly to provide cryptic running commentary on the events of the show.

Aside from everything about the story, which was the number one memorable part of the episode, I was really pleasantly surprised at how nice the animation was throughout the whole thing, especially in the whole kappa zombie fight sequence. I hope that this quality can keep up the whole way through.

Also the ED theme is fantastic and I’m glad that they were able to use the ‘anime characters in real environments’ aesthetic of the trailers in at least some part of the show itself.

Anyway that’s about it for this episode. Will I end up having too little or far too much to say about the rest of the series after this? Who knows. That’s for me to not initially know and for me to find out one way or another.
