Speed-running Doctor Who - The Eighth Doctor and Other Non-Series Doctors
Tumblr media
A quick and dirty guide for those who want to get into the show, but don't want to watch everything from the beginning.
The Eighth Doctor
Tumblr media
Plot Important Episodes
Entrances, Exits, Enemies, Lore Drops, and Character Development
Tumblr media
The Enemy Within - The Doctor Who TV Movie (The Eighth Doctor's introduction)
The Night of the Doctor - Minisode (The Eighth Doctor regenerates)
Tumblr media
Bonus
Not actual episodes but things you might want to watch anyways
Shada - Webcast (one of the many animated versions of Shada, but this one stars the Eighth Doctor instead of the Fourth)
The War Doctor
Tumblr media
Plot Important Episodes
Entrances, Exits, Enemies, Lore Drops, and Character Development
Tumblr media
Scream of the Shalka - Animated Mini-Series (this story features what may or may not be a young War Doctor. It also features Derek Jacobi as the Master for the first time)
Day of the Doctor - 50th Anniversary Special (The War Doctor's proper introduction and his only official episode)
Bonus
Not actual episodes but things you might want to watch anyways
Tumblr media
The Curse of Fatal Death - Minisode (a Doctor Who parody made for charity that, at the time, was treated as an actual episode but is no longer considered canon. Worth a watch just to see how much the short predicted the New Series)
Alternate Universe Doctor
Tumblr media
Back in the 60s, Doctor Who got two theatrical film adaptations staring Peter Cushing. There's much debate over where he fits in the continuity of the show, if at all, but he literally has more screen time than either McGann or Hurt so there's no reason not to include him.
My personal favorite fan theory is that he is a 10.2 Meta-Crisis Doctor grown old. It explains why he's human, why his last name is actually Who, why he had to build his tardis in his backyard, where his two granddaughters and niece come from, why they're named after past companions and family, why Ian and Wilf have alternate universe version of themselves, and why the Doctor is seemingly repeating his past adventures all over again.
Plot Important Episodes
Entrances, Exits, Enemies, Lore Drops, and Character Development
Tumblr media
Dr. Who and the Daleks - Movie (first story featuring Peter Cushing's Doctor)
Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. - Movie (Final story featuring Peter Cushing's Doctor)
Bonus
Not actual episodes but things you might want to watch anyways
Tumblr media
At the Earth's Core - Movie (This has even less to do with the show than the Dalek movies, but Cushing's character here is basically the same as his portrayal of the Doctor and is even called 'Doctor' through out the film. So fans of his Doctor have considered this an unofficial third movie)
(NOTE: THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR WILL BE COVERED DURING THE 13TH ERA BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE ALL OF HER APPEARANCES ARE)
(disclaimer: no spin-offs or extended universe stuff were considered when making this list beyond filmed appearances)
Up Next: The Ninth Doctor

Not At All Dredd-ful
Tumblr media
Dredd
 Not at all Dredd-ful
“America is an irradiated wasteland. Within it lies a city. Outside the boundary walls, a desert. A cursed earth. Inside the walls, a cursed city, stretching from Boston to Washington D.C. An unbroken concrete landscape. 800 million people living in the ruin of the old world and the mega structures of the new one. Mega blocks. Mega highways. Mega City One. Convulsing. Choking. Breaking under its own weight. Citizens in fear of the street. The gun. The gang. Only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice. Juries. Executioners. Judges.” is all the set up you’ll get in 2012’s Dredd but it is in fact all that you’ll need. Comic book adaptations are often bogged down due to the fact that writers and directors try to cram decades worth or comic storylines and lore into just a two-hour feature film. Although I don’t mean this literally creators often pack too much into an adaption to please the fan base or maybe just to prove that they know the source material. Luckily, Dredd does not suffer from this problem. The director Peter Travis forgoes a focus on the lore of Judge Dredd in favour of just being faithful to the character, this doesn’t mean a lack of lore in fact quite the opposite as the film is full of references to 2000 A.D’s comic run but they amount to just passing references as the film focuses on the character of Judge Dredd moment to moment. Karl Urban’s brilliantly authentic portrayal of the character, even refraining from taking his helmet off throughout the whole feature. makes that focus worthwhile.
Opening with a monologue provided by Urban’s Dredd giving the audience a brief overview of the state of the world really does well in getting you hooked straight away and at the same time it gets all that information out of the way early so the film can focus on the plot, and what an exciting plot that is! We first see our anti-hero in a high speed pursuit, chasing down a van load of criminals getting high on ‘Slow-mo’ (A drug that causes the brain to perceive things at one percent its usual speed). The chase gets serious when the criminals collide with an innocent bystander, sealing their fate, the verdict homicide, the punishment execution. Here you really start to get an understanding of who Dredd is, he’s no nonsense and by the book. The altercation ends with a standoff in a nearby building. thankfully, Peter Travis isn’t afraid to make use of a few cheesy quips akin to an 80’s action block buster like Predator or Commando. For example, we see Dredd calling someone “Hot shot” before firing and incendiary round into the suspects head and watching it melt, that’s the level of cheese we’re talking about here, also the level of gore. The film does not pull its punches its a practical effects blood bath. The audience is told that this world state is depressing and harsh and the aesthetic violence really hammers it home.
The Film then takes Dredd back to the hall of justice where he’s saddled with a new recruit, he’s charged with assessing. Leaning on the Judge Dredd lore, we are told that the recruit is a mutant with the ability to read minds. After giving her the option of what crime to respond to, Dredd and the rookie (portrayed wonderfully by Olivia Thirlby) head to ‘Peach Trees’ to investigate a multiple homicide. Peach Trees is a two hundred floor mega block housing thousands of inhabitants but more importantly its home to the Ma-Ma clan, a drug running street gang headed up by the ruthless and condescending Ma-Ma (portrayed by Lena Headey). After arriving, assessing the crime and finding a suspect the Judges attempt to leave the building to interrogate the individual when the building is placed into lock down. Two judges, one blood thirsty gang and 200 hundred floors between them. From this point onwards the film left me in an almost permanent state of suspense.
One of the most inspired things about Dredd is the aesthetic of its gun fights. Travis makes use of various visuals styles during the action, from slow motion, an ear ringing flash bang affect to filling the screen with green smoke and thermal imaging just to name a few. Travis has created an isolated narrative that focuses on very few characters, but he absolutely nails them. The film may be confined to one tower block but it, host to enough visuals styles to keep if fresh and exciting to look at. This film bombed at the box office on its release in 2012 so how about you give Judge Dredd the justice he deserves and watch this movie. Its crime: a poor advertising campaign, the verdict: guilty... of being one of the most entertaining action movies of the past decade, its punishment: the fact that you have not seen it yet.

they both roll a super critical 00. however, yami bakura’s dice shatter due to ryou bakura sealing his own soul into the doppelganger dice, too; ryou bakura dies from this action and it negates yami bakura’s dice roll. anzu mazaki uses her final big bang magic attack to defeat last zorc, and yami bakura. yami bakura’s soul goes back into the millennium ring and it detaches from ryou bakura, the millennium ring falls to the floor. yami yugi rolls a super critical 00 and white wizard bakura revives ryou bakura using healing magic luonazun.

A.D. 2016.  fortnight.  april 1st - april 30th.  dead approximately 3,341 years.  yami bakura momentarily stops ryou bakura because he senses the presence of another millennium item. while ryou bakura’s friends run off to find another duelist, yami bakura takes over and pulls out the millennium ring from underneath his shirt, it points to the location of the new millennium item. along the way, he knocks out a wandering duelist and rummages through his duel monsters deck before tossing them to the ground. he equips the duel disk then leaves. he follows the guidance of the millennium ring and comes across the owner of the millennium rod. he demands that malik ishtar give him the millennium rod or else he’ll kill him. they relocate to domino pier where they discuss the millennium items and the stone tablet of memory, then become allies due to their similar motives, the promise of the millennium rod and malik ishtar’s word that he’ll numb the pain of the injury for his host. yami bakura suggests using ryou bakura as a way to get close to yugi muto’s friends, so he pulls out a pocket knife and cuts open his left arm. he tosses the pocket knife into the ocean then retreats into the millennium ring, leaving ryou bakura unconscious. ryou bakura is taken to the hospital. later that evening, yami bakura stirs awake and rips out the i.v. from his arm, he leaves the hospital and goes out hunting for locator cards to qualify for seto kaiba’s battle city tournament then comes across one final duelist named bonz, he defeats him and steals his soul. he acquires six locator cards. yami bakura rendezvous at domino stadium with the other tournament finalists. he releases his control on ryou bakura. the millennium ring responds to the arrival of rishid ishtar who is undercover as the fake malik ishtar. yami bakura hilariously takes control of ryou bakura to eat bloody steak. yami bakura and yami yugi are chosen for the first duel, they arrive on the aerial duel arena above the battle ship where they cut and shuffle each others duel monster decks. yami yugi asks if he’s after the millennium puzzle again and he gives him an answer that leaves it up to his own interpretation. he tells him that he wants yami yugi’s egyptian god card; he needs to acquire the egyptian god card in order for malik ishtar to give up the millennium rod. malik ishtar intrudes yami bakura’s mind to suggest he duel yami yugi through him; this aggravates yami bakura who tells him to back off because yami yugi is his. the duel starts. for three turns in a row, he lets yami yugi freely dwindle him down to 750 LP before revealing that he fell for his trap. he finally goes on the offensive and summons dark necrofear, a duel monster that requires three monster sacrifices to be made in order to be summoned to the field. the real duel has just begun. yami yugi summons dark magician girl and activates his spell card book of magic, this increases dark magician girl’s attack points from 2,000 ATK to 2,200 ATK and she destroys dark necrofear and yami bakura is reduced to 420 LP. he thanks yami yugi for doing what he wanted because when dark necrofear is destroyed, her special ability activates which allows the soul inside her marionette doll is to possess one of yami yugi’s monsters. yami yugi tries to attack with magnet warrior beta, but the soul that possesses his monster retaliates against yami yugi with spirit burn. he reveals that if he chooses the wrong monster to attack, it’ll attack its owner instead of his opponent and they lose half of the possessed monster’s attack points while the opponent gains the damage the owner took in the form of life points, which makes the opponent stronger. additionally, by destroying dark necrofear, yami yugi activated his trap card; permanent trap, destiny board. the letter D appears on the field, after five turns, when all five letters of D-E-A-T-H appear, yami yugi will be eliminated from the duel. yami bakura activates the spell card, the dark door, which forces his opponent to attack only one monster during his turn, then finishes by placing earthbound spirit in defense mode. yami yugi makes the mistake of assuming that the soul of dark necrofear’s marionette can only possess one monster on his side of the fear and uses dark magician girl to attack, the soul attacks yami yugi with spirit burn and yami bakura’s gains more life points. the letter E appears on the field. yami bakura places a card on the field and ends his turn. when yami yugi attacks with magnet warrior beta, yami bakura activates his trap card, dark spirit of silence, this cards makes yami yugi’s attack command switch to another monster on the field. dark magician girl attacks and the soul of dark necrofear’s marionette attacks yami yugi with spirit burn again. yami bakura’s life points increase to 3,700 LP while yami yugi’s decrease to 750 LP. the letter A appears on the field. yami bakura skips his turn. he’s surprised when yami yugi activates the spell card, monster recall, this recalls his field monsters to his hand and he can reshuffle and draw five cards. yami yugi summons kuriboh to the field and its possessed by the marionette’s soul due to kuriboh being the only monster he has on his side of the field. dark spirit of silence affects kuriboh to make it attack, and because he summoned kuriboh, his chain of destruction trap card activates; this trap card causes kruiboh and the soul of dark necrofear’s marionette to be destroyed together. yami bakura growls in response to yami yugi’s smart counter play and the letter T appears on the field, leaving yami yugi with only one turn left. when yami yugi claims he only needs one turn to win the duel yami bakura begins to overthink, he looks at his hand and contemplates summoning ghost duke, but hesitates due to the face-down card on yami yugi’s side of the field. malik ishtar enter yami bakura’s mind to comment on how careful he is and tells him he knows what his opponent’s face-down card is. he praises yami bakura’s destiny board combo, but points out its one flaw; dark necrofear must be in the graveyard or else destiny board will disappear. he reveals that yami yugi’s face-down is monster reborn, a card that allows him to revive any monster in the graveyard. malik ishtar continues to give yami bakura advice on how to win his duel, but is cut short when he's told to shut up and disappear. yami bakura draws a card and laughs, then uses a sacrifice to summon ghost duke to attack yami yugi. he purposefully falls into his trap. when yami yugi activates monster reborn, he revives dark necrofear and destiny board is destroyed, he counters ghost duke with dark necrofear. yami bakura activates a spell card, deja vu and destiny board returns to the field, he reveals that once destiny board reaches its 4th letter, it can’t be destroyed; furthermore, dark necrofear disappears and yami yugi’s previous monsters return to the field. the effects of deja vu makes the field revert back to its original state one turn ago. lightning comes crashing down when yami yugi summons saint dragon, the god of osiris to the field. yami bakura is taken aback when the soul of dark necrofear’s marionette is unable to posses the egyptian god card. malik ishtar reenters his mind to comment that his defeat will serve his own purposes and he uses the millennium rod to forcibly release ryou bakura’s consciousness. as he watches ryou bakura suffer with the pain of his injury in spirit form, yami bakura tells malik ishtar that even he has standards and repossesses ryou bakura so he doesn’t have to deal with the pain of his injury. he tells yami yugi to attack and reassures him that ryou bakura won’t die, stating that he’ll take the damage for him instead because his host is important. yami yugi complies and yami bakura is reduced to 0 LP. ryou bakura is taken away to be treated.
A.D. 2016.  one day later.  april 1 - april 31st.  dead approximately 3,341 years.  when midnight comes and yami malik tries to murder rishid ishtar in his sleep, yami bakura materializes from within the shadows to intervene, with the millennium ring in his hand reacting to the others arrival. the soul of malik ishtar appears before yami malik from within yami bakura’s body and explains that they have a renewed alliance and that yami bakura’s main objective is to stop yami malik’s attempted murder in exchange for the millennium rod. yami malik uses the power of the millennium rod to subdue yami bakura against a wall and tells him that he’s next to die after rishid ishtar, yami bakura is taken by surprise for a brief moment before using the millennium ring’s power to break free. he challenges yami malik to a shadow duel and they relocate to the aerial duel arena. malik ishtar wishes to speak to yami malik and yami bakura complies, he sheepishly sticks a finger in his ear as a subtle display of respect for their rather personal conversation. when malik ishtar mentions shadi shin appearing five years ago, yami bakura is left momentarily stunned and only snaps out of it when malik ishtar starts telling him what to do. yami bakura makes him promise that in return for rishid ishtar’s safety, he’ll give him the millennium rod and show him the secret carvings on his back, malik ishtar agrees; he also forewarns that if he wins, he’s going to burn his physical body, malik ishtar understands. with that out of the way, the shadow duel starts. yami bakura places one card face-down and summons goblin zombie in attack mode, then ends his turn. when yami malik attacks with drillago, yami bakura activates his trap card, earthbound counterattack, which causes a ghoul at appear. he uses goblin zombie as bait to activate his trap card’s effect to attack his opponent, but its negated by yami malik’s remove trap card. when yami bakura’s shoulder disappears, yami malik explains that when they lose life points, their bodies will start to disappear. this causes him to look up when he notices a soul-eating monster lurking in the darkness, his initial surprise is quickly overpowered by his piqued interest. they resume their shadow duel. yami bakura draws a card and studies his hand and he notices he has this destiny board combo at his disposal, but knows that it won’t work against yami malik. just as he starts overthinking, malik ishtar tells him not to worry because he knows of a way to counter the winged dragon of ra and lets yami bakura in on the secret. he places two cards on the field then summons gernia in defense mode, ending his turn. yami malik activates the spell card, coins from heaven, this allows him and yami bakura to draw two cards. yami bakura laughs when he notices the frustration on yami malik’s face. he activates his face-down card, dark designator; this allows yami malik to add the winged dragon of ra to his hand, then he also activates his trap card, multiple destruction, which sends all of the cards in their hands to the graveyard. by doing this, he’s reduced to 2,900 LP and his torso and right elbow disappear. yami bakura claps his duel disk. he places one card face-down and sacrifices a monster to summon puppet master, controller of the dead. when this monster is summoned, its special ability activates and revive cards his discarded gernia, headless knight and dark necrofear to the field, this action reduces him to 1,900 LP; his chest and right shoulder disappear. yami bakura laughs then states on his next turn, yami malik’s current 4,000 LP will be reduced to 0 LP. yami bakura licks his lips in raw anticipation of yami malik’s death. he’s unsettled when yami malik bursts out laughing and claims a one-turn kill by revealing that the winged dragon of ra has a special ability unknown to even malik ishtar himself. yami malik summons the winged dragon of ra using monster reborn and starts reciting an ancient egyptian incantation; he uses 3,999 LP, with 1 LP remaining, so the winged dragon of ra can attack. yami bakura and malik ishtar are defeated, but when his body starts to disappear, yami bakura simply smiles and states that he is darkness and that he’ll be revived again in due time. only the millennium ring is left behind. when yugi muto enters yami yugi’s soul room, yami bakura eavesdrops on their conversation while he watches them from the shadows. with the end of battle city, yami bakura reawakens from within the millennium ring. malik ishtar shows yami yugi and his friends the secret hieroglyphs carved into his back, the key to the nameless pharaoh’s memories; yami bakura is a witness to them, too. later, the group’s attempt to hide the millennium ring from ryou bakura ends in vain as he eventually finds it with the millennium rod and happily puts it back on.
A.D. 2016.  a day later.  april 1st - april 30th.  dead approximately 3,342 years.  ryou bakura finally completes the ancient egypt-themed diorama.
MILLENNIUM WORLD.  21st century, 3rd millennium.
A.D. 2016.  16 years old.  april 1st - april 30th.  dead approximately 3,342 years.  yami bakura kills the thief who steals the three egyptian god cards from yugi muto and gives them back, scolding him for not anticipating something like this would happen. yami bakura presents both the millennium ring and millennium eye to yugi muto and swears loyalty to him, promising to hand over the millennium ring when he gathers all of seven the millennium items. he explains that the millennium stone is the door to the underworld before tossing the millennium eye to yugi muto before leaving.
A.D.  2016.  a day later.  april 1st - april 30th.  dead approximately 3,342 years.  ryou bakura arrives at domino museum with his friends wearing the millennium ring. when yami yugi presents the three egyptian god cards to the stone tablet of memory and disappears from within yugi muto, yami bakura becomes uneasy and he listens carefully when bobasa starts to explain a way to enter the world of memory. bobasa uses the millennium scales to weigh the hearts of yugi muto’s friends; ryou bakura is the only one who makes the millennium scales tilt, this causes ryou bakura to leave in a hurry when he realizes he’s unable to go. by the time bobasa and yugi muto’s friends arrive, yami bakura is already waiting inside the millennium puzzle’s maze, and when they finally discover the hidden door to yami yugi’s world of memory, yami bakura follows them in. he hides within the city of thebes and listens to the swarm of rumors about his progenitor, thief king bakura. night falls and yami bakura is floating above the city of thebes as his sleeping memories start to come back to him. hearing the egyptian soldiers assume that thief king bakura is dead causes yami bakura to laugh before he flies off to thief king bakura’s location. he sits across from his progenitor in an egyptian tavern while he eats and kills the patrons. when thief king bakura is prematurely killed by the nameless pharaoh’s winged dragon of ra caused by the interference of yugi muto and his friends, yami bakura becomes upset; he reports to the high priest of the shadows about thief king bakura’s defeat and he uses his memory reverse ability to rewind time. yami bakura intercepts yugi muto and his friends and when jounouchi katsuya attacks him, he uses the power of the millennium ring to knock him back. while thief king bakura engages the nameless pharaoh, yami bakura distracts his friends. he explains that the nameless pharaoh isn't the only soul sealed inside the millennium puzzle and that zorc necrophades is within it, too, and that the world of memory is a continuation of their war from 3,341 years ago. when yugi muto asks who yami bakura is, he tells him that zorc necrophades sealed his part of his soul within the millennium ring, too. a duel disk grows from his arm and he explains that whoever loses a duel in the world of memory can never return to the real world, he engages jounouchi katsuya in a shadow game and defeats him easily, the world of memory goes black. the nameless pharaoh and his high priests defeat thief king bakura in the hidden temple of the dead in kul elna and he tries to place the millennium items into the millennium stone, but his body starts to turn to sand. time is frozen and yami bakura appears before the nameless pharaoh, and he reveals that the world of memory is actually an alternate reality created from the nameless pharaoh’s 3,341 year old memories and is the layout for the ultimate shadow roleplay game. yami bakura explains that they’re still within domino museum, in a hidden room behind the exhibit where the stone tablet of memory is on display, and that the ancient egypt diorama was something he made ryou bakura build for their final duel. yami bakura and yami yugi talk about their first tabletop roleplay game and how the exact same elements apply, which includes the souls of yami yugi’s friends being trapped within this roleplay world, too. the only way to save their souls is to defeat zorc necrophades. he presents their comatose bodies laying within coffins, as well as the mummy of the high priest of the shadows. they continue their roleplay game and yami bakura successfully summons zorc necrophades with the millennium items. high priest akhenaden levels up and becomes the high priest of the shadows, but for the sake of having a fun game, yami bakura gives yami yugi a hint: yugi muto and his friends are non-playable characters and are the key to victory because of their mission to find yami yugi’s true name. yami bakura is about to win the game with zorc necrophades, but yami yugi threatens to use the card for high priest set as a shield in hopes that the high priest of the shadows will stop zorc necrophades’ attack; yami bakura realizes this and attempts to bribe yami yugi into giving him the high priest set card by possibly calling off his attack. yami yugi refuses and this annoys him. yami bakura eagerly attacks but is taken aback when the non-playable character hasan shows up to defend the nameless pharaoh and his high priests. meanwhile, yugi muto and his friends arrive at the valley of the kings to find yami yugi’s real name but are intercepted by yami bakura’s doppelganger and he duels yugi muto. his doppelganger is defeated and yami yugi’s friends discovers his real name. yami bakura activates the power of his third hourglass, natural catastrophe, in an attempt to kill his friends and stop yami yugi from learning his real name; this third ability causes four earthquakes to occur within the world of memory. despite yami bakura’s efforts, yami yugi learns his real name and he’s able to summon horakhty the creator of light; zorc necrophades is defeated as is yami bakura.
A.D. 2016.  one month later.  may 1st - may 31st.  dead approximately 3,341 years.  all seven millennium items are placed into the millennium stone and pharaoh atem enters the afterlife, the millennium stone breaks and the millennium items fall into a chasm.
A.D. 2016.  dead approximately 3,341 years.  ryou bakura continues to experience splotchy bits of paranormal activity within his apartment; such as objects moving by themselves or falling off shelves, doors opening and closing, incoherent whispering, discovering hand prints and scratches marks on his body, and a singular shadow figure coming and going. this activity stops after three months.  HC.
A.D. 2016 - 2018.  dead approximately 3,341-3,344 years.  when pharaoh atem enters the afterlife, yami bakura follows when the millennium ring is placed into the millennium stone, but his soul is chained in a darkened state of limbo, as an abyss. it often manifests as a dim, torch-lit tomb when, if, pharaoh atem comes to check on him. slithering can be heard in the endless nothingness when his soul is quiet.  HC.
DARK SIDE OF DIMENSIONS.  21st century, 3rd millennium.
A.D. 2018.  march.  dead approximately 3,343 years.  seto kaiba excavates the temple of the dead in the ruins of kul elna, in search of the millennium puzzle.
A.D. 2018.  three days later.  march.  dead approximately 3,343 years.  mani finds the millennium ring coming out from the rubble and picks it up; he ends up possessed by its evil powers. mani attacks ryou bakura in place of diva’s hesitance and the powers of the millennium ring engulf its former host. when the millennium ring kills mani, it sends ryou bakura to another dimension. diva comes across the millennium ring after he suffers defeat at the hands of yugi muto and ryou bakura is returned to the stadium after the power of the millennium ring wears off. diva is then taken over and the millennium ring bonds with the quantum cube, the supposed eighth millennium item, and diva emerges from within it in a monstrous form. yami bakura speaks when diva’s younger sister sera mentions shadi shin, explaining that shadi shin is no longer diva’s master and that he’s the one who killed the guardian of the millennium items years ago. pharaoh atem returns to the land of the living when yugi muto is nearly dead and defeats diva by summoning palladium oracle mahad, the millennium ring vanishes.  HC.
A.D. 2018.  july.  dead approximately 3,343 years.  four months after ryou bakura had indirectly reconnected with the millennium ring, he starts to vomit thick, black substance in varying amounts and when he attempts to clean it up, it’s gone like it was never even real. this is the result of an eight years worth of demonic possession.  HC.
A.D. 2018 - ongoing.  immortal.  dead approximately 3,343-3,344 years.  yami bakura returns. after the millennium ring had bonded with the quantum cube, it absorbed power from the supposed eighth millennium item and transferred over to his limbo-bound soul, and to the pieces of his soul that remained in the land of the living, sealed as fail-safes within a multitude of soul-jar-like items; such as ryou bakura’s monster world miniatures of zorc, the dark master and the mysterious non-playable character zorc, the dark master had disguised himself as, and his thief king bakura miniature from the ancient egypt-themed diorama.  at least, this is what yami bakura theorizes...  he assumes that the power the millennium ring took from the quantum cube broke his chains and led his soul back to the land of the living, like a beacon guiding him back to himself. he has yet to learn the details as to how he’s alive and in a body that’s separate from ryou bakura’s, but maintains his appearance with nods to his original progenitor, thief king bakura.  HC.

An Ancient Curse and Mysterious Fires - Welcome to the Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon
Established in 1902, the Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon is the “oldest original building” in Old Town Spring near Houston, TX. It sits across a once well-travelled railroad and played a key role in the boom of the Industrial Revolution. Resilient and devoted, the saloon held steady through the prohibition until being forced to operate as a dry cafe (1). Today, over a century later, the business continues to thrive, attracting lovers of local history, Southern comfort food, and surprisingly- the supernatural.
Reportedly, the original Wunsche brothers themselves are still keeping an eye on the place, most notably Charlie. Staff members account that he tends to spend his time on the upper floor, protecting the place while playing the occasional prank on the living (2). However, in 2015 the Saloon was temporarily closed due to a fire that left the building uninhabitable. Undoubtedly, the Wunsche Bros themselves continued to watch over the building’s remains, and one can only imagine their delight when the business was restored and reopened to the public.
Though a structure fire seems like a run-of-the-mill event, many in Spring, TX attribute the accident to causes beyond man. Over the last century, the saloon hasn’t been the only building to catch fire in the shopping district. For example, another building, the ice house, repeatedly catches fire with little known cause. As told on the ghost tours of Old Town Spring, it’s known that if a business cuts down a tree in order to set-up shop, that building will suffer a fire (2). But what’s the cause?
Local lore links these instances to the land’s ancient and dark history. The Akokisa are the rightful inhabitants of the land, whose heritage dates back to 100 A.D. (3). However, French and Spanish colonizers stripped them of their ownership, erasing their culture and lineage. Today we may know menial facts about the structures of the Akokisa’s homes, how they fed themselves, and some about their religious practices (of which most information seems to have a heavy Eurocentric bias), but most details of their customs, belief systems, and even their language are unknown (4). Lost.
Due to the cruelties of the colonizers, it’s believed that their curse fuels the repeated fires of Old Town Spring, and many have marked the area as incredibly spiritually charged. Next time you visit the Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon, tip your hat to Charlie and pay respect to the lost culture that lies beneath.

The vines are almost all pruned now. The pieds de vigne, or woody parts, stand in perfect rows like so many well-behaved students at assembly. Or sentries, silent, brooding. With a little lower-back pain.
The vines are old, sometimes 30, even 70 years old. Wine takes time.
The one above reminds me of an old vigneron, or winegrower, who was similarly bent over. He drove a rickety old tractor that putt-putted down the street to his vines. It was a Lamborghini, something that never failed to make me chuckle.
My kid and I always smiled and waved to him as we headed to school and he passed on his way to work. We probably also said bonjour, which I doubt he ever heard over the racket of the Lamborghini’s finely tuned engine. He always brightened and waved back. He seemed amused by children, a good thing for somebody who lives next door to a preschool.
I was amazed that he kept working. He must have been around 90. Years later, somebody told me that he was a mean guy that nobody liked. I felt terrible for him. How did he get such a reputation? Was it deserved? Or was it a label slapped on by somebody for one falling out and then became part of village lore? He seemed sweet to me. And his tiny tractor, with some yellow paint still clinging to its sides, was cause for great excitement for a preschooler.
After a good frost but before the first buds on the vines, the vignerons are out pruning (tailler) the vines. It’s usually a solitary job. A beat-up car or camionette parked in an odd place (OMG, what is that car doing there? was there an accident?) is the first clue that somewhere in the expanse of row upon row, a bent figure will be clipping away.
In the years since our kid graduated from the village school to upper grades in town, I no longer get out morning, noon and evening, and I miss out on local news. There are three main sources of information: the knot of parents waiting outside the school doors; the local commerce–bakery and grocery store, mostly; and a loudspeaker system by which the mairie broadcasts announcements. These are preceded by very badly recorded clips of music, usually some pop song that was popular 15-20 years ago and just as often in English as in French, then the announcement, read by one of the mayor’s secretaries with a lavishly thick local accent. More music, the announcement one more time in case you missed it, then more music and out.
However, sometimes the snippet of music is the “Kyrie” from Mozart’s Requiem mass. And then you listen for who died. I knew most of the old people by sight, not name, smiling and waving on four-times-daily school commutes (9 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 5 p.m.). When our kid declared independence, meaning going to school alone, I had to agree yet I was so worried that I would creep behind, working to keep up while staying far enough back not to be seen. There are some benches near a fountain, under the platane trees, where several old men gather to watch the world go by. My kid would greet them, a high point–well, four points–in their day, often the only person to go by.  And these papis would smile and assure me, as I peeked around the last corner from which I could see all the way to the school down an ancient street too small for cars,  that everything was fine and I could go home. Our little secret.
I missed the announcement of the old vigneron’s passing. I realized I hadn’t seen his tractor in a while, nor did I see him tending his vineyards. Finally I asked someone and learned he had died a few months earlier. I think of him every time I pass one patch, where I often saw him, bent like the vines he was pruning. Sometimes I wave anyway.
I wonder whether the vignerons talk to their vines, which seem so much like individuals, with personalities. I would ask, but I suspect they would look at me like “this American really IS crazy.”
Plenty of people talk to their plants. My grandma had a way with African violets. One day, she confided that her secret was that she talked to them. She pulled me into her sun porch, where African violets lined the window sills, to demonstrate: “If you don’t bloom, you’re going out!” she barked at the plants. Bloom they did. Tough love.
The trimmed branches are called sarments, good to add to a barbecue fire for flavor. The word “sarment” often figures in restaurant names.
In 2008, the European Union launched a program to reduce a glut of wine and keep prices from crashing by reducing EU vineyard area by 94,000 hectares a year. Kind of like OPEC for wine. People love to complain about the EU, but united we stand, divided we fall. Without an overall plan, everybody would have said, let the other guy tear up his vineyards. And they all would have suffered as prices fell further. Overall, vineyards in the EU shrank 24% between 2008 and 2015.
Ripple effect. Isn’t it amazing that creeping green shoots can harden into such shapes?
It wasn’t the first time vines have been uprooted. In 92 A.D., the Roman emperor forbade planting new vines in Languedoc and ordered half the vineyards to be destroyed, because French wine was giving Italian wine too much competition.
Since last year, vines have been allowed to be planted once again.
These make me think of modern dancers.
Did you know that 85% of French households say they bought wine for their own consumption during the year, but just over half drink only a once or twice a week; only 16% of the French drink wine daily or almost daily. The average price of a bottle of wine in France is €6.33. And most of it is good stuff, even when it’s cheap.
Update: I wrote this a few days ago, and the very next day, leaves popped out on the vines. If they made a noise, the countryside would sound like a popcorn machine right now. They seem to open right before your eyes. I’ll try to get out and Instagram some later today. The leaves have a “just woke up and blinking in the sunshine” air about them.
Time to Wine The vines are almost all pruned now. The pieds de vigne, or woody parts, stand in perfect rows like so many well-behaved students at assembly.

People hadn’t set foot in this ancient ‘lost city’ in the Honduran jungle for 500 years — until now
More than half a century after the collapse of the Mayan civilization, the members of a neighboring Central American society suddenly gathered their most sacred belongings, buried them in the center of town, and vanished.
"There's a big question about who these people were," best-selling author Douglas Preston, who visited the remnants of this city, told Business Insider."What happened to this civilization? Why did they abandon this city so suddenly?"
Preston was part of a research mission launched two years ago to explore the ruins of an allegedly lost civilization. He wrote about his recent trip through the Honduran jungle in the new book "The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story."
Some have claimed that the buried remnants correspond with an ancient, legendary "White City" — a town of extreme wealth that vanished some 600 years ago. Since the 1900s, rumors of this forgotten city had danced on the lips of explorers, aviators, and tourists excited by the prospect of uncovering hidden treasure. But no one knew much about the people who once lived there.
Even after some parts of an abandoned village, including remnants of plazas and pyramids, were uncovered in 2012 during first expedition to the area, anthropologists and archaeologists remained stumped.
"In the words of the leading Honduran archaeologist on our expedition, 'What we know about this culture is...nothing,'" said Preston.
Nevertheless, some intriguing theories have emerged. Researchers on the most recent trip found a cache of nearly 500 intricately-carved stone objects inside something Preston described as "a grave — not for a person but for a civilization."
The legend of the 'Lost City' and the discovery that sent archaeologists fuming
The 1,000-year-old ruins — whose timeline coincides with the legendary "White City" — were buried in the rain forest, in a round valley ringed by steep cliffs. Since a team of researchers uncovered them in 2012, they've been revisited by more research teams (including Preston's).
When news outlets picked up the story, most portrayed it as an ancient mystery that had finally been solved. National Geographic ran with the headline, "Exclusive: Lost City Discovered in the Honduran Rain Forest." NPR announced, "Explorers Discover Ancient Lost City in Honduran Jungle."
There was one problem, though, according to researchers who signed a public letter condemning the news claims: The ruins were not the "lost city" of lore, and worse, they may never have been lost to begin with. The dissenting researchers (including University of Transylvania archaeologist Chris Begley, who has 20 years' experience in the region) said the National Geographic story exaggerated the findings and ignored the region's indigenous people. National Geographic responded to the letter by linking to a statement from the research team that says their story never claimed to have discovered the "lost city," but merely a lost city in the region.
The people who disappeared
Controversy notwithstanding, the teams of researchers and documentarians who visited the site in 2012 and 2015 came away riveted by what they'd seen. Preston and several other archaeologists maintain that they set foot on terrain that had remained untouched for half a century. And they say the clues these people left behind point to a tragic end.
"It's hard to believe that in the 21st century a lost city could still be discovered. But that's exactly what happened," he said. "People hadn’t touched foot there in 500 years. It's absolutely true."
Whoever populated the area deep in Honduras' Mosquitia Jungle did not leave many clues. The team that visited in 2012 was able to date the remains they uncovered to somewhere between 1000 A.D. and 1400 A.D. That places people in the region after the time of the Mayans, whose civilization stretched from southeastern Mexico across Guatemala and Belize and into the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador.
"They grew up near the Mayans, they took on the pyramids, they laid out their cities in a somewhat Mayan fashion but not quite," said Preston. "But it's very mysterious. There's so much we don't know."
What researchers do know is that whoever lived there disappeared suddenly. In addition to rough remnants of their pyramids and plazas, they left behind a series of intricate stone pieces, including what is thought to be part of a ceremonial seat featuring an effigy of a "were-jaguar". So far, researchers have identified nearly 500 of the stone pieces.
"At the base of a pyramid we discovered an enormous cache of beautiful stone sculptures," said Preston. "It appears the people brought their objects, carefully laid them to rest, and then walked out of the city."
Several archaeologists and anthropologists who were on Preston's research team believe the people were felled by disease.
"The evidence is very strong that that's what happened," Preston said. "These were diseases brought by Europeans, specifically smallpox and measles."
Ironically, it's unlikely that any Europeans ever reached this civilization — at least not in person. Instead, their diseases probably found the indigenous populations by way of trade. As goods exchanged hands, so did viruses. And some of these invaders were foreign illnesses against which the indigenous people had no defense.
"This is a fascinating example of how disease can run way ahead of physical contact," said Preston. "Even though this valley was never physically threatened by the Spanish, it may have been laid low and completely wiped out by their disease."
