Hi everyone This is late into the comic, but I loved the reveal of Apricot's family -- how it was treated as normal and matter-of-fact in-universe, because for her it is, even though it's a real Wham Moment for the readers.

i agree with erin. my favorite scene is when we find out that apricot's secret is that shes the princess of darkness. because i did not expect the secret reveal right then, and just like the entire process as things evolved was personally comical for me. cause first her dad shows up in this weird attire, then grandma darkness, then the helmet thing, and then just more from there. like it was a bunch of puzzle pieces all falling into place. if i was a cartoon character thats when a lightbulb and exclamation point wouldve appeared over my head.

Ooh, it was totally unexpected. And most people would consider this as a possible reason why she can't transform! But it's perfectly in-character for her that she never spoiled the reveal by even thinking about it.
She's such a ditz, I love her.

yeah. the humor of the comic is definitely top notch. this, imo at least, is parody done right. because its walking that fine line between mocking the tropes but having them and loving them anyway.

That's a good example of a joke that's clever and genre-savvy, it just happens to refer to something that's bad news IRL. In contrast to the "it's gross, that automatically makes it funny" bits.

Ah! I suspected but wasn't sure. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about that one, like I almost wish it had gone deeper. I wasn't sure if the dad was being sarcastic with the "son" comments near the start or not. But I agree there was some good consideration there.

Erin: Yes, but I wasn't sure if she was actually a girl who liked cards, or a boy who liked magic. Like, the way it was presented felt ambiguous, even through the dad's comments, until later.
Of course, I'm also sleep deprived.

QUESTION 2. One of the main aspects of the comic is to parody manga and anime in a comedic manner. Of all the parodies so far, which one do you think is the most accurate? What about its execution in the comic do you think makes it work as a parody? Additionally, which of the parodies did you find the funniest? Outside of the writing, there are also plenty of visual gags. Visually speaking, which moment stood out to you as particularly comedic? Lastly, what do you personally feel the underlying commentary is saying about manga and anime? Has any parody in the comic made you think about manga or anime in a new light?

It's really funny that there's this whole card-game-based conflict going on in the same world, in the background to the magical-power-based conflict.
Like, that's how the industry as a whole feels sometimes -- though obviously it's not along such a rigid divide (much as marketing companies wish it was).

The visit to the Convention was rather amusing. There's these times when the creator pokes fun at themselves, visually or otherwise. (eg "No one does these things in full colour").

i think my favorite parody of them all is the one where apricot actually does wake up late and then takes the time to go get bread, and etc. etc. cause its just so drawn out in how long it takes. but its true, you cant go late to anime school without toast in your mouth.

...realizing now that I don't actually have much personal experience with Video Game Final Bosses, I'm basing this impression mostly on how they get parodied in other webcomics. Like RPG World, or Adventurers.

The language thing (are we speaking Japanese or English) felt like it went on a bit long too. I think it only stands out because usually the pacing feels very good.

i also loved the translation bit. it did go on for a bit, yet i think what sold me on it was the OK that was supposed to be english was actually changed to the correct universal font for trying to show things in english

QUESTION 4. Apricot’s one true dream in the story is to become a magical girl. Do you think that Apricot will achieve her dream eventually and learn to transform? If so, what measures do you think she might have to take to ultimately achieve this dream? How might this affect Apricot’s relationship with her family? Alternatively, will she eventually come to accept her role as the Princess of Darkness? Regardless of which event occurs, how do you think Apricot’s friends/school mates would react to finding out who her parents are? Do you think they’ll find out or will it stay a secret forever? The others are all aware of a great power when Apricot tries to transform. Thing is, didn't someone say at some point that Princesses couldn't transform? I think she'd need to renounce her throne for it to work. Which she might do, but then regret.

Look How Far We’ve Come
Welcome to Year of the Pony’s second regular series (aside from the editorials), The Elements of MLP! Every month, we’ll be looking at one aspect of Friendship is Magic in some degree of depth to explore all the different parts that go together to make MLP what it is.
Part of the reason I started this year-long event was to get to the bottom of why I love this show so much, so maybe looking it piece by piece will help me appreciate the whole better.
This month, we’ve got the Element of Design and Animation, one of my personal favourites.
And, I’m not alone! So let’s go through the whole gosh darn process (or at least as many stages as I’ve got something to say on)!
Design

In the beginning, there was Lauren Faust.
If you only know one name from behind-the-scenes, it’s Lauren Faust. As MLP:FIM’s creator, she lead a lot of the development that made the show what it is visually (and in other areas, too, of course).
So, yes, Faust had an immeasurable influence on the design choices. And, because of her genuine love for My Little Pony as a kid, so did previous generations of MLP.

Figures that AJ would be the one to change the least during development (never change, AJ), but here they are: The old school Mane 6! As you probably know, all based on characters from the franchise’s history!
You’ll notice that even though the colours themselves varied, the pastel colour-scheme overall was there from the start, and it’s largely because of the franchise's roots in the 80s.

*Correction: Silver Rain on EQD pointed out to me that the cartoon commonly thought of as G2, My Little Pony Tales, is actually still G1. There is no G2 cartoon (generations are defined by new sets of the toys, not the cartoons or feature films, so even though Pony Tales is very distinct from the first two movies, it’s still G1)
The closest thing to a G2 anything besides the toys is a video game, but for this analysis I decided to keep it strictly to television and movies. So, enjoy knowing G2 is a lie!
See how the first two generations looked a bit washed out? And the next two are sort of over-saturated? In addition to looking cleaner because digital animation v.s. traditional (neither is better), G4 strikes a balance between the different colour-palettes of the franchise in a really comforting, visually satisfying way.
Soothing is probably the best word, which expertly matches the breezy, light-hearted, and loving tone of the show.
So, anyway, even after development went on, as changes were made, notes were taken, and the world we’ve come to know took shape, the show’s roots still have a surprisingly big influence on its visuals.
And my god, can we all take a second to appreciate these designs?

Every element---from characters, to creatures, to backgrounds, to that storybook thing they keep doing---make this show a visual treat. For several reasons:
Cute - the ponies are round; there are very few sharp points in their designs and that combined with the classic big eyes + cute tum + small nose and mouth = cute, makes them even freaking cuter 
Instantly Recognizable - there’s a rule popularized by Simpsons creator Matt Groening that if you can recognize a character in silhouette, that’s a good design; even besides the fact that they’re ponies and you could tell them apart from human characters, there’s absolutely no doubt who’s who---I could even name the side characters if you tested me
Conveying Personality - You can tell most character’s personalities from the minute they walk on screen---take Starlight Glimmer, for instance; the first shot we see of her, she’s got kind of a 60s hairstyle, so before she even opens her mouth, you can guess she’s either got some old-fashioned ideas, or more accurately, she’s in charge of this weirdly cheery village (ever watch, well, pretty much anything from the 60s? Those fake smiles in Starlight’s village would fit right at home); her false-belief of what will make ponies truly happy is reflected in her design, and not only that, she used to have straight bangs to instantly cue to the viewer that this is a character who’s going to parallel Twilight (especially when she’s screaming about ‘creating Harmony’...)
Simplistic - Most of these designs use thick outlines and soft colours to emphasize just how cute the horses are; in relation to the backgrounds and other creatures, they easily draw the eye because the other elements are more detailed but very rarely have outlines.
Asymmetry - You’d think it would be more satisfying to an audience to see characters with symmetrical designs, but not so, and this is reflected in every single character design in the show (as well as most building designs: the Golden Oaks Library, Canterlot Castle, Cloudsdale, etc.); even Twilight, who’s bangs are cut straight across (according to the EQG universe), has a curve to her mane, highlights to the left, and a small part on one side
All of these aspects and probably more give all the designs a strong visual impact, while also making them cute as heck.
I don’t think I can say it better than this: these designs are so sweet, distinctive, and inviting that the fandom latched onto and created entire backstories and personas out of background characters. It’s like Bobba-Fett from the Star Wars franchise---in reality, he’s barely in the films, but because he managed to grab so many people’s attention with his surprisingly memorable design, he’s one of the most popular characters!
And, you know, I’m not going to lie to you. Part of the reason this show is so comforting to watch is just the soft colours and incredibly cute characters. It really is just soothing to look at. But there’s more to the visuals than just cute, pretty ponies.
Movement

One of the things I remember hearing back when I first came into the fandom in early season 2 was that some fans were downright shocked that MLP was animated in Flash--- a program so cheap and hard to animate in fluidly that most shows and projects that come out of it tend to look ... shoddy.
Which isn’t always the case, of course, good shows have been animated there, but I would say that, on the whole, shows animated in Flash seem to have great designs but less focus on fluid movement. 
Like, even if you’re not an animation nerd, if I list a bunch of shows you animated with Flash, you might notice a kind of a pattern in how they move (of the ones you know):

The Gravity Falls pilot (the rest of the show was animated in ToonBoom Harmony, the same animation program My Little Pony: The Movie is being animated in!)
It’s a hard quality to describe for me, but the absolute best example probably is the Gravity Falls pilot:

See how everything looks exceedingly flat (even for 2D animation)? And how each movement tends to have this weird, unnecessary (for lack of a better word) pop to it?
That’s what Flash is known for. 
I’d like to take a second to say it of course doesn’t make all of those shows bad at all; and in fact, there are a number of shows besides MLP that actually use Flash well (to the point that you wouldn’t know it’s animated in Flash).
Bob’s Burgers, Archer, Sym-Bionic Titan, The Amazing World of Gumball, even Fairly Odd Parents as of the 10th season.
I think it’s mostly just the fact that at the time we didn’t know many shows that could look this good and still use Flash. 
The exciting thing is that MLP doesn’t move like that. Season 1 had its moments of animation flubs, sure, but I’ve re-watched it recently and it is animated pretty well.
A lot of moments will have a snap for emphasis (like, the manes will move how they’re supposed to), but it’s handled in a natural way that doesn’t distract from the movements we’re actually supposed to focus on.
And, no, it’s not the most sophisticated, beautiful animation out there, but it can run the gambit from snappy comedic timing to slower, dramatic scenes.
I think the only problem I’ve really noticed with G4 animation is whenever characters run in Equestria Girls.
I know, that’s really specific. I don’t even have a problem when they walk, it’s just when they’re running that it looks the most like the cheap Flash animation. It’s a hard quality for me to describe, but rewatch a scene where they have to run at all, I’m serious. It’s almost a pet peeve at this point.
It’s a hazard of the genre, I suppose. Like most Western animation, MLP focuses most of its time and energy on expression and the smaller movements as opposed to big, involved battle sequences or choreographed action (the only big battle sequence is the Dragon Ball Z Tirek fight, which was done super well, but is still a rarity in this show).
Meaning, some of the most unique bits of animation come in the form of expressions and reactions.

I always love these. Not for the meme potential (although... ), but because I know every time I see a face like that the animators went out of their way to make something distinct and insanely expressive. 
And that’s not the only way they bring the visuals together. I could probably go on and on about things like the shading and lighting, the staging, the intelligent use of background to hide gags or references or just add that much more depth to a scene...
But, seriously, I’ve already eaten up so much of your dash.
I will say this, though. Friendship is Magic’s style is more gorgeous, fitting, and creative than you might think at first. It’s why the artistic side of the community exploded, and still hasn’t stopped growing. And the continual improvement in this element alone is enough to get me excited for the next season. I’ll admit it, it’s one of the biggest reasons I always look forward to seeing more.

Thank You, Mrs. Holly
My name is Holly Gainley. I’m 74 years old, and I live with my only daughter, Alice, and her husband and two children.
I have been many things in my long life: a mother, a performer, a wife, an artist. I’ve had a good life, full of adventure and romance, but with the recent passing of my husband, Roger, I’ve come to realise that I have no one left who shares so many of my stories as he did.
That’s why I’m writing this now, in the hopes that my grandchildren can read this letter and know me as more than just Grandma, Nanna, and the occasional Gigi - but as Holly, with all my long history and accomplishments.
I have much to say, and I’m sure I will write many letters in the coming years, but my mother always told me to start a story with the most exciting thing that happens in it, so I think that’s what I’ll do.
The greatest adventure of my many years was the time I spent as an animator in New York City. I was young, about twenty or so I think, and I was living in Manhattan at the time. It was nowhere near as busy as it is now, but nothing was back then, so it certainly felt the same as it does now: big city, bright lights, fast, fast, fast!
I had moved out of my parents’ house to attend college. My mother was always very concerned with maintaining my higher education, and I think we both approved of Barnard’s origins (it was formed as a response to Columbia’s refusal to admit women, an appealing act of defiance), so I studied and got a degree in History and one in English.
I was still in college, looking for a job, craving the independence I had gotten a taste of away from home. The bustle of the city inspired me and I eventually came to work for the breathtaking Capitol Theatre as an instrumentalist in their orchestra. Movies were still silent back then, of course, and the theatre was an astoundingly decadent affair. There were lounges and smoking salons and ushers to guide you around the place, and it was always busy! Plenty of work to go around, seeing as they needed instrumentalists for every movie. I had been educated in the classical manner and knew how to play a handful of instruments, so I was really quite valuable to the theatre. It was tough work, but good, and I had music in my life then.
What with the theatre’s rise in popularity, there were rumours that the management was looking into starting a radio show, and there were plenty of people vying for a spot to perform, I tell you what! I had an eye out for extra work on the side, as ever, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to play with better hours, as I mostly had to fit my work schedule around my classes.
Out of the blue, an old friend from my alma mater offered that I do music for a cartoon show - he had heard I was looking for a job - and I accepted; that was the first time I saw Roger Atwood since high school, and our reunion eventually culminated into a relationship spanning decades.
Mother never approved of cartoons, thought they were lowbrow. I believe the word she used was “scatological”, but seeing how comedy has gone nowadays I rather think she jumped the gun on that one.
Regardless, it was my first time seeing an animated cartoon, and I was absolutely entranced. I still remember the name of the cartoon at least, Bobby Bumps at School, but many of the stories run together in my head. I do vividly recall the image of Bobby’s mother washing his face with a cloth, but I believe that may be from the earlier short “Bobby Bumps Starts for School”. Bobby Bumps didn’t do much to step out of the formula.
I was doing music for the show, and the musicians have to work very closely with the animators, you know, for the visual gags to line up with the music. I was very fortunate, I think, that my introduction to cartoons included how they were made, because I had no conception of cartoons before, how easy or difficult the process of their creation.
As it happened, Bray Productions - the studio that produced Bobby Bumps - was looking for a new cel painter. I’d tried my hand at some traditional painting before, so I offered my services. The interview was very casual and irregular because I had Roger’s shoe in the door, and so they gave me a deadline and said “paint 300 of these cut cels in a week and we’ll consider that a portfolio”, and I managed it quite fine. I wasn’t the only woman painting cels there by any means, so I thought I had a pretty good shot, and turns out I did! I was hired to paint and ink the cells for their new animations.
The first cartoon I distinctly recall working on was Heeza Liar. Heeza had this sort of Roosevelt feel to him. Colonel Heeza Liar. They were rebooting the series, as it had stopped in production sometime around 1917, so I think if I’d known cartoons before then I really would have considered it an honour to work on it.
The job was really quite difficult, especially because of the financial position the studio was in at the time. It was established enough that the animators could get away with some frankly half-finished (and frequently half-started) drawings, and the cel painters were expected not only to paint each cel but to ink a lot of them too. I think that was the hardest part. Too much of that job was ad-lib.
Now I didn’t really know this at the time, but the studio was reaching the end of the rope. I only ended up working on six or seven proper cartoon shows before they started to wrap up work on that. Luckily for me I managed to get into another department early, and I started working on educational videos - PSA’s mostly - and commercial work. It was a fine thing back then, because you got a new thing to draw every week and you never had the time to get tired of a character. But it wasn’t meant to be, and work finally started drying up around 1928 or so.
My degrees from Barnard didn’t prepare me for any job I was particularly interested in, so I returned to my work as an instrumentalist for a few years, but the first few films with sound had come out and there was less and less need for the pit orchestra for each movie. I stayed with Roger and we finally got married in June of 1931 ("when’s the wedding?” had been a running joke in the studio years before we finally found each other sitting side by side).
By 1932 I had moved on to some small jobs with the radio. The Depression had hit and movies were out of the question for someone not passionate about the work, and I was lucky enough to get a job as a corner store clerk working for one of my neighbors. Roger moved in and we scraped through until the war.
He enlisted, of course; he’d always been a firm believer that we should have taken action long before we did, and so when the opportunity arose he left. I missed him terribly, and I suppose that’s part of why I started sewing clothes for the soldiers out on the front lines. I thought it must be awfully cold and damp, and I hated to think of our brave citizens freezing out there. A gift from home can warm the spirit as well as the body, and so I started a small charity to make and donate clothes for our soldiers. My little charity circle grew and I think one year we sent out as many as two thousand shirts.
When the boys came back from the war, they wanted to educate themselves, and, well, I know an opportunity when I see one. Always have. With my education I easily secured a job as the librarian of a local college, and I really felt like the queen of the castle there! Directing the building and feeding a hunger for knowledge; I couldn’t have been happier. In fact I worked there until quite recently.
I still draw occasionally and play for the family for small events like birthdays and holidays, but I finally settled down. I didn’t get the life I expected, but I found happiness in what I was given. And really, isn’t that the point? Isn’t that the entire point?
