I just finished playing A Plague Tale: Requiem (spoilers incoming) and that final scene with Hugo was just so masterfully done.
The way Hugo was positioned, almost like he was on a cross, as the sacrifice needed to save human kind.
The way Amicia has finally been forced to recognize the horrible truth she's been adamantly denying the whole game.
And the slow, horribly deliberate way she draws her sling that final time. It's such a tiny detail that makes a major difference in the mood, and it's little details like that that make video games stand out as a unique form of storytelling. You as the player are forced to draw the sling yourself, instead of the game prompting you or doing it automatically. And when you do, you can feel how slowly and painfully Amicia does it, you can feel her indecision through your controller, and then, just when you hear the crack of her sling, it cuts out to blankness and silence. It was just such a great scene.

Béatrice's line "Love can kill, Emilie. By the time you realize that, it'll be too late"...
That's the whole point of the game.
We're on a journey driven by love and hope, but at the end there's only death and mourning.
Béatrice's love for Hugo took them (her, mostly) to trust Vaudin even if it wasn't the best choice. Amicia's love for Hugo took them to La Cuna, and that wasn't the wisest course of action either.
Both options were born out of love, hope to save Hugo... but in the end they killed him slowly. First, Hugo was disregarded, misled, and treated poorly by Vaudin, then in the island the Macula overcame him, it connected to him even more.
When they all realized what had to be done to keep Hugo safe, it was already too late...
Yeah, I'm still reeling back from Requiem... That cursed scene's imprinted in my mind and I can't seem to get it out. That chapter was so dark, twisted, and cruel... Fuck... I still have a lot to say about Chapter XII but this is what struck me the most. Unbelievable...

Hi I just realized Hugo controls everything in the end.
Amicia and Lucas go down a slope together and somehow get separated. Because he needs her alone. To face this. To understand. To accept.
And after she understands, he disappears from her side. He doesnt need to be there now. She is ready.
But as she walks on, she says she cant be ready for this. And that, after this is done, she will be alone.
And right after, Lucas suddenly appears, hugging her.
She isn't alone. Hugo shows her that.

Oh no here she comes again with the fanfict she will never write=
Okay, I'm in the middle of a mess, trying to organize my first draft. I managed to write a short summary and a full synopsis, using the Snowflake method, and for now, I'd say it actually works.
Read more bellow if you dare.
I wanted to share with you my first Character sheets tests, (because I'm stupidly proud of it) but also, if you're in the same situation and looking for a model; here is mine. It's a mix of different results I found through many Youtube channels and google, and some of my own ideas.
The Snowflake method helps you to prepare your story step by step, starting from a simple sentence resuming your plot to a full detailed synopsis. Plus, creating your characters profiles. You can find many videos about it on Youtube, (I really had fun making this, but it might to not suit you as all writers have different way to work.) There is a full part on how to write your character description, but this is where I took some liberties;
I found all of the pictures on Pinterest, except for Lucas' face. I used the Artbreeder app, and with the few free credits I had, I somehow managed to mix two images to have a close result, then edited it on Procreate.
There is no spoilers in those descriptions, you can read them safely. (If you're ever interested in my story ^^)
The steps :
Some infos about your characters, size, eyes color, hair color, peculiar details of their bodies, fears, ect...
A short summary of their story and current status.
Their concrete goal, or what they want to do.
Their abstract goal, or why they want to do it. (those part can be tricky to discern, so I just asked myself what are they doing in the story, and then why.)
What is preventing them to reach this goal, external or mental obstacles, burdens and conflicts with themselves or with another element/character, past traumas ect...
How your characters are going to evolve to reach they goal, what kind of person they will become and what they have to do to get there. What they are going to learn through the story.
The status, alive or deceased at the end of the story. Add a short description in the second case. (I voluntary erased my answer here to avoid spoilers ! )
A page about whatever makes you think about your character. Think about details you haven't written in the description, but also ambiances, or even memories.
Remember that I'm a beginner/casual writer, maybe this isn't the best way to create your characters but I found this very fun to do and constructive. It helped me to think a lot about their personalities and choices, impacting the plot.
Feel free to give it a try, and share your results, changes, or even advice !
Thanks for reading ! And good luck for your projects !

A Plague Tale Requiem - Thoughts (SPOILERS)
I've just finished playing A Plague Tale Requiem and well…it became my favorite game ever. lol
It was a perfect sequel to Innocence and it improved in all aspects compared to the first game, even where I didn't think it was possible.
The gameplay was smoother and felt more nautral, I loved the new way we had of controlling the rats, which I found a bit too hard in the first game. Loved all the new ways of killing enemies, including the crossbow, and how all the weapons just felt instinctive to use.
Also, I thought that Sophia's prism was a very creative way of avoiding the rats.
Tumblr media
The visuals were even more stunning than Innocence, which was BEAUTIFUL.
In Requiem, though, literally every scene was straight out of a painting. I spent so much time wandering around and trying to catch every little detail and glimpse of this beautiful world.
I was particularly impressed by chapter 9: such a big space to walk around compared to all the other chapters, and it was just as beautiful and full of details as the others.
Tumblr media
The music was perfect in every moment and was fundamental to convey the strong emotions of the story, exactly like the dubbing that was just amazing. (When Hugo said 'I love you' to the tree my heart sunk in my stomach lol)
Tumblr media
The story was very well written even if (of course) it leaves you with a bittersweet feeling at the end. And I think that's how Amicia feels at the end too: the plague has been stopped but… yeah, you already know.
The new companions were written flawlessly and you grow to care for them exactly like it happened in Innocence with all the kids.
It's insane how this game is capable of making you see a character in all his facets, and makes you appreciate characters that you first considered enemies. Like it happened with Arnold but even with the rats themselves: they first were a threat, and later they become an asset to help you go forward in your path.
Also, the very last scene where we see the new born baby bearer of the Macula, suggests that, if there will ever be a sequel (I HOPE), it will probably take place in a more modern setting, given the sound of the mechanical respirator we can hear in the back. And I don't know how to feel about that😅.
Because, obviously I would love another great game and to know more about the story, but at the same time I want Amicia, Lucas and Sophia to be back!😭 I'm not ready to leave them yet.
Tumblr media
And this brings me to the only sour note about Requiem: why didn't they bring Melie back?
They told us in the finale of Innocence that she left the group because she was scared of Hugo basically.
And this left a big scar on Amicia, like we can see with Sophia: when Sophia sees for the first time what Hugo is capable of, Amicia is terrified she will leave them, exaclty like Melie did… (part number 324234232 where my heart broke).
Amicia can handle when strangers look at Hugo fearfully, but Melie was her friend and they built a strong bond during the first game.
All the kids were like family, that's why it felt so wrong when she just left… no goodbyes, no last scene.
Tumblr media
She was clearly torn apart by the pain of loosing Arthur, and she couldn't help but blaming Hugo for it, but I really hoped that when this wound would've healed a little, she would've come back to the only friends she has.
And now, more than ever, that they have both lost the only brother they have, they could've been there for each other and understand each other like none else could.
That's the reason why I hoped to see her again until the last frame of the game, but also simply because I grew attached to her character and I missed her. *sigh*
But yeah, if the hypothetical sequel will take place in the future, there is less than 0 chances of seeing her again. Of seeing ANY of them again, for that matter.
Tumblr media
Bottom line, this game was ridiculously good and it broke my heart from start to finish, when I was just trying to hold back tears (unsuccessfully).
It's a shame A Plague Tale isn't more known, because it deserves the same recognition as games such as The Last of Us.
Tumblr media
P.S.: favourite funny moment, Silent Lucinda, and Hugo being terrified of goats ever since. lol

Finally got my copy of Tenebris this morning, and all I have to say is with Beatrice it is on sight. She is so insufferable and her personality comes across as downright mean (even though it's meant to show she's pragmatic).
Then there's Amicia, trying so hard to cheer Lucas up and save him from the walking childhood trauma dispenser that is her mother:
"What did you think?" repeated Amicia hastily, preferring to spare her friend an abrupt remark from her mother. (A little later) "Don't blame yourself, Lucas, we owe you a lot (Amicia speaking louder), don't we mother? "
Amicia had heard her mother speak in this tone before. The interrogation was beginning, and Beatrice would take it to the end. Maliciously? No. (A little later) Amicia tried to intervene for her confused friend. Lucas has nothing to do with this.
Lucas nodded, but Amicia found him more obedient than truly convinced. She decided to intervene.
Lucas is so exciteable about alchemy that it hurts my feelings to see her be so high and mighty to him about it. Also she doesn't know Amicia's language? Your children are not puzzles, ma'am. The hell. Now, I see what he meant by being stuck between Beatrice and Vaudin. Terrifying.

I need to ramble about A Plague Tale: Requiem
Man i have so many thoughts over a plague tale: requiem and i need to share them or write them down somewhere or I think i will aHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
the game is so good dude, like, holy shit. i loved innocence, i really did, but there were some aspects that were okay. ya know? like, sometimes i think there was this whole, "illusion of choice" thing present. like more than one way to get pass enemies but in truth there wasn't really.
but requiem? holy shit dude, requiem really dID give you a choice. I noticed it the MOMENT Lucas pointed out how Amicia (the player, technically) handled the situation, and the game showed 3 different like, skills that will develop depending on how you get by enemies. One for stealth, one for aggressiveness/fighting, and another that I don't really understand but I think it had to do with alchemy. And oh BOY WERE THERE CHOICES IN THIS GAME.
There's like, all kinds of different ways to get by enemies, 17 different PATHS, DUDE IT'S SO GOOD. HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK
the story, oH MY GOD, THE STORY WAS SO GOOD AND TRAGIC. I LOVED the new characters. I absolutely adored Sophia, though I wish they gave Arnaud a bit more screentime. With him we just snuck around and walked around town. With Sophia we like, spent a whole fucking day with her. The game did such a good job at establishing her character. Showing her traits and her thoughts and loyalty. My favorite being after she finds out about the rats, after she finds out about the curse, after she learns EVERYTHING, she STILL choses the kids. She still picks them. Still helps them. She stays by their side until the end and even more so then. GOD, it was so good, and I loved her character. And I'm sO HAPPY SHE DIDN'T DIE.
We didn't see much of Beatrice but one scene with her keeps replaying in my head. When the rats are taking over the town, and Amicia reaches Beatrice and Hugo. Beatrice watches the rats, believing, yet also hoping Amicia's words will reach Hugo in time. And there's a moment, where, she accepts the worst. Accepts the fate of herself and her children. And rather than panicking, rather than scolding Amicia, or telling her to hurry, she hugs them. She hugs her children. She wraps her arms around them and holds them close. Because if this is truly the end, she wants to be with her children.
Beatrice, in all her being and faults, is not a perfect mother. And to me, she didn't have enough screen time to me to truly make an opinion of the type of mother she is. Yet, I think about that scene a lot. Because to me, it shows that she loved Amicia and Hugo dearly. She closed her eyes, held her children, and accepted her fate.
I loved Lucas in this game, you can truly tell that he's a bit more mature. That's he's grown from the previous game, and even the stuff that happened in between the two games (because apparently there's books that go over events between the two games and the moment they get translated I am going to buy the sHIT OUT OF THEM).
I love how he was the balance in this game. He kept Amicia and Hugo, especially Amicia grounded. He calmed them down, comforted them, supported them, held them, he was their strength when they had nothing left.
If the world was being consumed by a hurricane, Lucas was the eye of the storm.
You could tell how much he loved Amicia and Hugo, how much they meant to him. In Innocence it was obvious that he cared for them after a while. But Requiem showed that he began to love them. That they mean everything to him. Maybe it's because Lucas is my favorite character, but it was so obvious that he thought of them as family. Or at least as something as strong as family. They meant everything to him, he loved them both so much. The De Rune were his world, and it hurts to think that he almost lost it, and in some cases, practically did lose it.
Amicia, holy shit Amicia, it's so obvious the effect the 1st game had on her, the consequences, the toll. Amicia is ready for everything to go wrong, but she still holds on to hope that maybe, just maybe it won't. She acts less like a young girl trying to survive and weighing her decisions, and more like an adult who is ready to do what is necessary even if she doesn't want to. And it hurts. It hurts to see what she has become, and to see how the 1st game has changed her. It hurts to see her deal with trauma at a time where stuff like that wasn't really discovered??? At least I don't think it was all that known.
And Hugo? God, Hugo. My poor boy. You can tell how much he wants to be like other kids, how much he wants friends, and peace. How tired he is, he's 5 years old and he's already tired. He hadn't even lived yet, the choice to live was stolen from him by selfish assholes. And it hurts to see how afraid he is of dying in the beginning only to reach the end and... It's just so.. Obvious that he knows what has to be done. That he knows he's going to die. And he's okay with it. Hugo has come to terms with it and it hurts. He's 5. FIVE. FIVE YEARS OLD. When I played Innocence for the first time, all I could think about was, "Hugo has never been outside, this is his 1st time outside. This is his first impression of the outside world. A beautiful yet cruel place" And that thought is still so strong in Requiem. And it hurts.
This game hurts, and it knows it hurts. It's a beautiful yet cruel game. And I love it.
I can't stop thinking about it. It's all I can think about. God, I fucking love this game.
When people would ask me, "What's your favorite game?" I never had an actual answer. I could answer my favorite video game franchise, but I've never had a favorite game before.
Now, though? Requiem changes that.
I adore this game. Replaying it now hurts, but something is missing now. And I know what it is.
I want to experience the game for the first time again. In all it's beauty and pain.
I've never felt that way about a game before. And I love it.
I love Requiem. In all it's being.
To think none of this would have happened if I hadn't stumbled upon a random video showing Innocence's gameplay.
I wouldn't change a thing though.

A Plague Tale: Requiem’s Ending ruined the entire game and it’s beautiful message:
(I have edited this post: the ‘mental illness’ to ‘mental and terminal illness’ as I missed the words and only used mental in reference to a spoiler)
So I just finished A Plague Tale: Requiem and the ending absolutely destroyed the beautiful message (your terminal illness doesn't make you: you can still live and thrive) and ruined the entire game.
(Major spoilers for the entire game and mentions of ableism under thread)
The story is an allegory with living with terminal illness: you have good days, you have bad days, you do everything right but you are getting worse, you're afraid people will leave you at seeing your worse, you're afraid of hurting those you love.
Hugo mentions how he has ruined Amicia's future by her taking care of him, but she doesn't believe that because she loves him. Sophia says that she still likes him even after seeing him at his worst.
You find out that the previous Carrier (Basilius) was isolated and institutionalised against his will because he was 'too dangerous', which made him panic and activate the Macula. The game heavily criticises institutionalising those against their will and separating from family.
It is discovered that so long as Hugo has a loving network and the support he can live with the Macula. Amicia and Hugo wish to start a new life where they can live in peace.
The message of the story was about how no matter how destructive your terminal illness is (and how terminal health correlates with mental health) may be you still deserve to live and can have friends that love you regardless. There is no cure for the Macula, but Hugo learns to live with it. He can be happy. People love him regardless.
Only for the ending to say 'Hugo is far too gone (even though he has some control?)/too mentally unstabled, so you must kill him' and for Amicia to give up trying because... you can't win in everything? You can't save everyone? It's hopeless? The whole journey was pointless?
The story's message alluded that the ending would be that Amicia saves Hugo; there is no cure for the Macula, Hugo learns to live with it, they start a new life, and have a network of those who love and support him (Sophia and Lucas). What a beautiful message, ruined.
Why didn't the game just end with chapter 14 in which by boat they go to the mountains to start a new life? Beatrice's death wouldn't have been pointless (which also destroyed the message of how so long as Hugo and Amicia have each other they'll live).
Asobo dropped the ball with the ending and ruined the entire message of learning to live with you terminal illness and living (with family and friends). Requiem is entirely ruined. Even Innocence by extension. Jesus, Asobo that was a godawful way to ruin Requiem.

I am thinking about Hugo de Rune once more. He was such a ray of light and love. He loved everything he got to see thanks to Amicia, and if he hadn’t experienced all he had, he might’ve easily become Basillius; locked away, alone and afraid, and uncaring that he was destroying life because he would have never known it and all the joy it brought. This sweet little 6 year old boy, guides Amicia through the unnatural landscape and shows her what she needs to see, to understand, to accept. And then when she is scared she’ll be all alone, he guides Lucas to her, to show her that she won’t be.  This loving little boy uses what lucidity he holds in the last threshold, to tell her he loves her and to promise her it’ll be okay after he’s gone, to make sure he’s stopped so all he loves isn’t gone from the world.
May this world remember how much you loved it.
