201203 The Powerful, Limitless Kai
Tumblr media
EXO member Kai unpacks his solo debut, artistry, and how he learned to express himself.
“I wanted to show that Kai is limitless,” 26-year-old Kim Jongin, better known by his stage name Kai, tells Teen Vogue of his newly-released debut self-titled album. The word is multifaceted, conjuring up an unfettered existence or an endless void, as terrifying as it is appealing.
Kai leans toward the latter. His voice — soft, restrained, thoughtful, and at times giddy during our interview — is an anchor in that wide open space. He’s quite excited about the idea of limitlessness, of existing on more than one plane, of proving you’re more than one thing.
Kai, out November 30, is just the first step.
“Over the years I've been in the industry, many people have seen me as a member of EXO. I have performed in front of our EXO fans and SuperM fans. This is the first time I'm actually releasing something under my own name,” he says. “I want to show people who Kai is through this album. The name Kai means ‘to open’. So, I want it to be open and show a new side of me.”
Tumblr media
The year was 2012 when EXO debuted with an intensely mythological, high-concept origin story. Shortly after the heart of the Tree of Life dried up due to the red forces’ incessant attacks, Kai descended to Earth — along with the rest of the members of EXO — as part of the legends that “see the same sky but shall stand on different grounds, shall stand on the same ground but shall see different skies.” (A parallel to EXO’s original split into two groups, one focused on China’s pop market, the other on Korea’s.) Each member has his own superpower, and Kai’s is teleportation, although he doesn’t always know what to do with it. During the music video for “Lucky One," the rest of EXO use their powers to fend off villains, but Kai breaks out into dance. (Though if you’ve seen Kai dance, you’ll know that’s as much a superpower as anything.)
That may be Kai’s beginning, but he was brought to life by Kim Jongin, the youngest of three siblings, who grew up in Suncheon, South Korea, with an early interest in ballet and jazz dance. Taking on the persona of Kai at 17 years old, he began to set the framework for what he’d soon become known for: a fluid, captivating dance style infused with seemingly endless confidence, smirking through concept changes with ease. As EXO’s popularity hit the stratosphere shortly after their single “Growl” — with performances on world stages like the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the multi-million selling 9-member group remains one of the most revered acts in modern-day K-pop — so did Kai’s reputation as one of the most enigmatic performers in Korean idol music.
Duality is one of K-pop’s favorite concepts, and the endearing dichotomy between Kai and Jongin is a perfect example of where the person and the artist diverge. On stage, Kai paints a mysterious picture, flitting from lithe self-possession to seductive swagger, to borderline arrogance. Off stage, however, Jongin is uncharacteristically shy: he blushes when complimented by his group members, often forgets his own passwords (and asks friends to help out), and is obsessed with his niece and nephew.
While every gaze, every spin, every step with Kai is intentional, Kim Jongin is as free of the bounds of pretense as it gets. It could be as easy as turning a switch on or off, but that would be doing Kai’s ethos a disservice. It’s subliminal. “Kai is me in my dream state,” he says. “When I'm sleeping, it's like my dream character comes alive, and that would be Kai. I’m more of a normal, down-to-earth person. That's just me, but Kai is this persona that's on stage… I do notice that when I'm dancing and pulling off all these different concepts, [I’m] like a totally different person outside of myself doing that.”
And if EXO member Kai is one type of persona, solo performer Kai is another. He previewed Kai with a short film song-sampler, in which he “teleports” through a cinematic thoroughfare of concepts, each one diving deeper. In “Hello Stranger,” his voice is the lighthouse in the storm of the bustling city, asking to talk about the things that overwhelm you. “Reason” is a modern-day fairytale, with Kai as the quirky, attention-grabbing prince in a sea of droning conversations and pretentious debutantes. Hold his hand, turn the corner, and you meet Bad Boy Kai in “Amnesia,” sheathed in leather and a mullet (a hairstyle that continues to be one of the greatest things ever to happen to K-pop) and leaning into noble sacrifice: “Forget me before I know you,” he says. How can you?
We pass through scores of mirrors, each with a different version of Kai as he croons, “Don’t think about anything else.” He holds this attention until the mirrors open into a vast landscape. Now, he is the one looking at a mirror of his own — clad in lace and soft whites and vocalizing his desires openly, “Nothing On Me” is his version of suave vulnerability. The story ends on “Ride Or Die,” a throwback to yesteryears with its heavy, sensual synths and noir setup. It’s a full circle moment; this Kai is the same one we get a glimpse of within the first few seconds of the film, as a hologram. All this while, the mirrors that pull us through the songs have been windows, a journey through the hallways of Kai’s mind, ending in the confident reassurance that he will “ride or die” with us, till the end.
“[I wanted to show] that I can do anything and that anything is possible,” he says. “It’s the connection between teleportation and the limitless possibilities that I have as an artist, as Kai. I wanted to showcase that all of these different sides are Kai, are myself.” And he learned a lot about himself in the process of making the album. “To be honest, I was pretty stressed preparing for all of this on my own, but I think I learned a lot about myself throughout this process. Not just myself as an artist, but [also] a lot about myself as a person: my personality, how I deal with stress, and just... what I’m like as a human being.”
Teleportation is an apt comparison for Kai’s continued interest in embracing other art forms and expanding his artistic lexicon. If that comes with playing with the constraints of conventional style, fashion, and masculinity, then so be it. Like his artistry, his sartorial expression is boundless: whether it’s the slew of crop tops worn to highlight the chorus in “Don’t Mess Up My Tempo”, which gave us one of the most memorable fan-cams of 2018; to the shirtless red suit for “Love Shot” that, frankly, deserves its own museum; to the soft yet dangerous combination of flaming red and lace he’s sporting in the highlight medley for Kai. Every outfit is the period at the end of his words, mapping out his own zeitgeist.
“As my career progressed, fashion itself became a way to express myself on stage and the being that I am,” he says. “It's not just about expressing the song or the concept itself. I think it’s really important for me to try new things and have people notice what I've been trying. I actually want people to look back on the styles that I've tried as an example for them to reference later on. Fashion has become a really important thing for me to develop myself.”
At the heart of these many concepts, of both his Kai persona and his life as Jongin, is movement. Kim Jongin and Kai share a fundamental receptiveness to the world, and of course, a singular, synchronous rhythm that has become the bedrock of his artistry, whether as part of EXO or out on his own.
“When I was younger and I first started dancing, I think I just simply loved dancing itself. I was immersed in the art of dancing,” he says. “I loved doing it, but I think as I've progressed as a performer, as my career has grown, dancing has not only become something I love to do, but it's also become a tool [to] express myself on stage and to audiences. Dancing has been part of more than half of my life now. It’s like a friend that I can't live without.”

I was watching ikon tv on YouTube again and that made me look at a bunch of old clips from kpop, and I just want to say FUCK THE BIG 3 SO MUCH OR ANY OTHER COMPANY THAT TREATS IDOLS LIKE SHIT
JYPE
Blatantly favoritism over Twice and Stray Kids, which leads to overworking them, and zero to nonexistent comebacks to got7 and day6 (idk about itzy bc I'm not a fan). For example in 2018, Twice had 6 comebacks (japanese/singles included) and in both 2017/19 they had 5 (japanese/singles included) Stray Kids on the year they debuted, 2018, had 4 and in 2019 they had 5 (japanese/singles included).
This situation got so bad that during a vlive Jeongyeon cried because of how overworked she was. She, Mina and Jisung had to take a break from promotion, I know that those breaks were in different eras but I think that there's a link on why only members of the most overworked groups needed a break.
Also Got7 has like zero promotion, when they had the world tour ahgases were the ones to promote then, because jype didn't bought ads. The boys songs were refused so many times, Mark's schedule were canceled so he couldn't meet his family. They refused to give a solo career to Yugyeom and Mark, when they failed to protect the boys from the sasaengs which lead them moving out so many times and on why Jackson got injured.
Edit: I am more than glad to say that today, 10th of January, all members of Got7 are leaving Jype. #Got7forever💚 I love you boys, thank you for 7 years of happiness, and I'll proudly continue to support all of you
How they forced that visual and hairstyle on Jeongyeon, even tho she didn't wanted it, she said during a vlive that she wanted to grow her hair but the company used to cut shorter everytime. They are extremely strict with the weight and the food, a few artists like Sunmi already said that. Somi has told some stories about how they had to sneak food and hide eating in the bathroom, and when Momo was forced to lose 7kg in seven days only to appear in a showcase.
The famous situation flag situation with Tzuyu. She was 16 when that happened, she introduced herself as Taiwanese and held the Taiwan flag as well. Which lead to many to many chinese users saying she was a pro-independence activist, she was barred from the Chinese television and suspended of all her activities in China. 2 months later, on the day of the election in Taiwan, Jype posted a video of her reading an apology saying that there's only one China and she is extremely proud to be Chinese. She was 16 at the time, and you can see during the video that she is so scared, sad and clearly hesitating on saying what she's reading, the whole video just has this weird, forced vibes. The 3 presidential candidates said that video was too cruel for a 16 year old girl and that she didn't need to apologize.
YG
I will never forgive yg for disbanding 2ne1, for not helping G-Dragon when he was accused of plagiarism and started suffering from depression but had to continue with the promotion. Same thing with Top that was diagnosed with social anxiety and depression, and suffered a overdose because of the marijuana scandal but yg had also nothing to say.
For releasing Hanbin in a DAY because of false accusations, while it took them WEEKS to release s***gri and only after he released a statement saying that he was leaving bigbang. And for not telling the public or for not defending Jennie during that time everyone were saying she was lazy when in fact she had an ankle injury, but still continued the promotions.
SM
Whether we like to admit or not, SM is probably the best company in the kpop history if we're talking about success, they have a formula that works over and over again, it's a pattern, we can especially see it in Suju, Shinee, Exo and Nct. But omg they have zero compassion for their idols.
Starting from the training, we all know the training for the debut is really difficult, but a lot of people say that between all the companies SM is the worst one, they are extremely strictly and controlling , especially the managers who abuse the power. They have this curated-ness that is quite toxic, and leads to an incredibly perfectionistic and controlling management system. Kai used to practice 8 hours a day so that everything was perfect, like surely work it out bc Kai is one of the best dancers in the industry, but still that's a lot of hours you're basically overworking yourself (I think)
As a result, many idols have even more outstandingly brutal beauty standards than there already are in the kpop industry generally. especially intense weight-loss standards, Taeyeon already said this, during the first 5 years of GG she was constantly battling with eating disorders. Baekhyun has this diet where, instead of eating the food he only chews and then spits out, Sehun in 2017 (I think) had this stage on the Exo tour and he said that he spend an entire month on diet, so he could do that stage. Taemin said on a few episodes of Mtopia that he was on a diet, but you can clearly see that he was extremely thin. Also they have a part in their contracts about plastic surgery, you can see that almost every SM artist has done it a double eyelid surgery.
The blatantly favoritism over Korean idols and the mistreats that happens with idols that aren't Korean (especially with they're chinese), as we saw many times already with examples like Tao, Kris, Luhan, Lay, Winwin, Ten and Lucas before they joined WayV. Or favoritism with certain members of groups, like Taeyong in Nct, of course that favoritism is a part of their formula but still pretty fucked up.
They have such a questionable promotion, like I already read once about. They said that SM promotes the new groups so they can form a better fan base and that way no longer will need the promotion, but still this is extremely bad. Like with BoA, Tvxq or Suju who are still relevant but we barely hear news about them because SM doesn't promote then, and I can already see this with Exo especially in their latest comeback.
They manage mental health horrifically. Like with Taeyeon in 2014/15 when a member (bc SM treated Jessica as garbage) of her group had to leave, which lead to the midia saying it was her fault alongside with the hate she received at that time because of her relationship with Baekhyun, that lead to her depression and eating disorders. Same thing happened with Baek, although he didn't receive the same amount of hate, he still had to suffer with his relationship being in the spotlight while 3 members of his group left, because AGAIN SM treated them as fucking garbage.
For stop carrying about f(x), as a result lead to a witch hunt on Victoria saying that it was her fault for that happening, for Sulli who was suffering from a mental illness but never received a break nor the protection from the media that used to say that she was a bad example. For Jonghyun who was also suffering from depression but never got any help or a break.
And our latest examples Irene and Chanyeol. I don't approve Irene's actions, but the fact that the media is so ruthless with her it's ridiculous and even more ridiculous of SM to not defend their idol, especially when there's so many other celebrities that are WAY worse than her. And for Chanyeol, who was accused of cheating on his girlfriend 10 times, but SM had nothing to say or to defend his image. It took the fans for that to happen, the fans were the ones to find out that was a fake and cover up scandal so the news about the government crisis were not to be seen.
They are so bad at dealing with idol apologies, like why did Taeyong in 2016 had to apologize for something he didn’t do, but they never had anyone apologize for their racist or the cultural appropriation that the idols have done many times already in a lot of mvs????
That's why I hate the kpop industry and the media so fucking much, bc they're ruthless and assholes who are putting so much pressure on the idols, who in the end of the day are humans and are deserving of things like love, privacy and a break to take care of themselves. I truly adore kpop and the dramas, but I'd stop watching and listening with all of my heart if it means that they would stop treating humans beings as fucking trash! They deserve so much more!
Thank you for coming to my ted talk!

TLC Secret Santa 2018!!
@nerdishfeels i finally finished it! here is your gift. it is a kaider fic about them going on a new year’s eve date after a long state dinner. merry christmas and happy new year! enjoy :)
Cinder puffed a strand of hair out of her eyes in annoyance.
“Almost done, Your Majesty," Iko said calmly. She slid the last pin into the elaborate twist. A footman standing next to the two women held out a lacquered box with a small golden clasp. Iko flicked the latch and raised the lid. Gently she lifted the glittering tiara off of its plush, emerald green velvet cushion. “Come to mama," she murmured. The footman closed the box and dismissed himself with a nod.
Cinder straightened her spine in preparation for the headpiece. “Where'd you get this one, Cinder?" Iko asked, admiring the polished diamonds and smooth pearls.
Cinder glanced behind her reflection in the mirror. “Oh, that one was a wedding gift from Queen Camilla. She gave it to me because it's known as the Lotus Flower Tiara, and the lotus is the EC's emblem. It was made in 1923, Second Era.”
“Ooh, vintage!”
“Yeah, the metal scrollwork is admirable, considering the primitive tech and tools they had back in the day.”
“Leave it to you to get your little mechanic brain all wrapped around jewelry.” Iko placed the tiara gently on Cinder’s head, nestling it safely in the stablest parts of her hairstyle. “You look beautiful, Cinder." Iko bent to kiss her friend's cheek.
“Thanks, Iko.” The two turned in unison at a sharp rap on the mahogany door frame.
“Ready to go, gorgeous?" Kai stood effortlessly straight, a dashing figure in his expertly tailored suit. Cinder rose to meet him but he crossed the room first, catching her painted lips in a kiss. Cinder steadied her tiara with one hand and she could feel some of the stress leave her shoulders just knowing her husband would suffer through this horrible function with her. They broke apart and Iko promptly whacked Kai's arm with a makeup brush.
“Kai! Now I have to reapply her lipstick and adjust her hair. And you're already going to be late!” Iko cried.
Kai placed a gentle hand on Cinder's back, sending the same chill down her spine that it had four years ago. “Well, I'm sure the diplomats can wait an extra minute. Take your time, Iko.”
Cinder sat back down as Iko deftly rearranged pins. “Remind me again why we have to go to this dinner, Kai?" Cinder asked, trying to hide a twinge of whine in her voice.
Kai dragged a hand down his face. “It's a tradition. The leaders of Earth get together for dinner every New Year's Eve. According to official media, we talk about world events and general politics. But usually, everyone is so busy stuffing their faces that very little work gets done. Anyway, it's our turn to host this year. It was going to be in Australia, but it turned out they were in the middle of major renovations that they conveniently forgot about until a week ago. Sorry I didn't involve you more.”
“It's ok,” Cinder started. She paused as Iko approached her face with a lip brush. Once her friend-slash-stylist-slash-hair-and-makeup-artist had finished, she continued. “But afterward, I'd like to do something together. Just me and you. Ok?” She gave her lips a final swipe and stood back up again.
“Of course,” Kai said. Cinder could hear the sympathy in his voice. Kai gave a pointed look at Iko as he kissed Cinder’s cheek. The android made a small disapproving noise but said nothing. Kai bent his arm and Cinder slipped her hand into the crook of his elbow. She loved the sureness she felt holding onto him like that, her anchor in a sea of anxieties and mistakes waiting to happen. They glided down the corridors together, followed at a distance by a half-dozen security staff.
When they entered the dining room, the diplomats stood and the kitchen staff bowed their heads. It had taken Cinder months to get used to having that kind of effect when simply moving within her own home. She took a deep breath and forced herself to embody an empress, calling forth her memories of royal training.
As they were led to their seats, Kai grabbed her hand and squeezed it. “It’s going to be fine,” he whispered. Cinder nodded briefly and smoothed her blue crepe skirt. That was the other thing she hated about these functions: she and all the other women had to pretend they were comfortable in their tight, movement-obstructing, or generally unpleasant dresses. She made a mental note to consult Iko about it, and that next time she would insist on wearing a suit as well.
As soon as the first course was presented, conversation ceased and each person was focused solely on eating as much food as humanly possible. Cinder spent most of the meal rotating between chicken satay, tofu curry, steamed bok choy, and a variety of sweet buns. Kai immediately dove for his favorites: chili crab, vegetable egg rolls, inarizushi, and gulab jamun.
When the waiters began clearing plates, part of Cinder wished that the dinner had been scheduled for longer so she could have eaten more. That feeling soon faded as various representatives and politicians swarmed around her and Kai to personally wish them a happy new year. There was a sudden lull in activity, and the two young monarchs only needed to exchange one glance before they both made a beeline for the large double doors leading to the main hall. Cinder leaned against the wall, savoring the relative quiet. One of the women guarding the door glanced in Cinder’s direction but showed no reaction other than a slight inclination of her head.
“So, what did you want to do?” Kai asked.
Cinder chewed her lip and let her eyes wander around the hallway. “Um… I don’t know…” She spun a phantom wrench between her fingers as she considered their options. Kai always loved when she did that, when she was so lost in her own thoughts that the rest of reality seemed to vanish. He gazed at her, still in disbelief that he had married the girl of his dreams. He could almost see the literal mechanisms in her head turning.
Abruptly, Cinder looked straight at Kai, eyes bright. “I know! Let’s go watch the lantern lighting in the park.”
Kai looked at his watch. “Cinder, it’s already 11:30. Are you sure we can make it in time?”
“Yes, what are you waiting for? If we run we’ll have time to change clothes.” Without another word, Cinder grinned and took off down the carpeted hall as fast as her pinchy shoes and confining dress would allow. Kai smiled and ran to catch up with her.
Back in her dressing room, Cinder didn’t even stop to breathe. She rifled through her closet in search of her comfiest cargo pants and sweatshirt. She found them quickly and tossed them on the floor. Iko was no doubt at a wild party so Cinder was left to undo her formal outfit by herself. She placed her delicate tiara on her vanity table. A glance at the clock told her that there was no time for her to remove her makeup or take the pins out of her hair. With a shrug she shimmied out of her evening gown and heels, somehow managing to pull on her incognito clothes at the same time. She had to dig deeper in her closet to find her favorite boots, and she tied them sloppily to save time. She threw on her hood and emerged from her room to wait for Kai.
A moment later, his door opened and Cinder saw that he was wearing his old ratty gray hoodie. She smiled and grabbed his hand.
“Come on, we only have fifteen minutes. I want to get as close as we can to the lanterns.” Cinder pushed the door open and ran much faster than before in her well-worn shoes.
They barreled down the hallways, garnering a multitude of stares from very confused staff, but no one tried to stop them. Cinder couldn’t help but laugh as they scrambled down the stairs to the main road. She hadn’t felt this free and spontaneous since before she became Empress. She glanced at Kai, who was smiling just as wide. The two of them raced around corners and dodged several hovers as they navigated the maze of New Beijing’s streets.
Kai paused against a wall a few blocks from the park, panting. “Wait… a second… I need… to catch my breath… Why… did I skip… calisthenics… with Torin every... day as a kid?”
Cinder snorted as she slowed to a stop. She extended a hand to pull him upwards. Kai accepted, but as she began to drag him up, he drew her forward.
“Ahhh!” Cinder gave a yell as she was thrown off balance. Kai grabbed her other arm to keep her from falling and pulled her into a warm embrace.
“Hey, slow down a minute. I just want to hug you. I love you. A lot.”
Cinder gave a relaxed sigh and nodded into his chest. “I love you too.” She tilted her head back to look at him and tugged his head toward hers for a kiss. She glanced to the left when they broke apart, pulling up a small clock in the corner of her vision. 11:52. Her eyes widened. “Kai, we have to go now or we’ll miss it!”
Kai relaxed his grip. Slowly a mischievous smile grew across his face. “Race you!” he cried. He bolted toward the park before Cinder had time to react. He was already half a block away when she shook her head and followed.
Cinder arrived at the park gate just a few seconds after Kai. He grabbed her hand, momentarily shocked by the coldness of the metal, and they walked in together. Somehow they were able to squeeze their way into the third row of the crowd, the unlit lanterns so close that Cinder could spot the soldered joints of the metal frames behind the ornate paper.
The time was 11:58. Kai stood behind Cinder with his arms wrapped around her shoulders. She rested her head on his bicep as she gazed at the decorations surrounding them. She gave a contented sigh and breathed in the cold night air. It was sharp against her skin, refreshingly jarring compared to the consistent temperature in the palace. The savory smell of fried meat was wafting from a nearby restaurant. The aroma mingled with faint smoke from firecrackers that had been lit earlier in the evening, likely to appease children who weren’t allowed to stay up past ten. Midnight drew closer and the volume of the crowd increased steadily.
“Ten,
nine,
eight,
seven,
six,
five,
four,
three,
two,
one! Happy new year!!”
The lights in the lanterns flicked on while the spectators cheered. Cinder turned her head and smiled at Kai before pressing her lips to his. She could already tell that this was going to be a great year.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 8/1/2019
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Thursday, August 1st, 2019. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
LET CABINET ‘TAKE POLYGRAPHS FIRST’ – Let the Cabinet of Barbados lead the way in taking polygraph tests. After that, customs officers will follow, outspoken Senator Caswell Franklyn said speaking in the Senate yesterday.Franklyn, also general secretary of the Unity Workers Union which represents some Customs staff, said Cabinet should lead by example to show there was no corruption in high office in Barbados by being the first public officers to take lie detector tests.“When Cabinet takes lie detector tests, I would advise customs officers to follow. Show them there is nothing to worry about. Lead by example.”Franklyn was speaking in the Upper House yesterday, as members debated the Customs Amendment (No. 3) Bill. (DN)
BETTER VEHICLES FOR GAIA INSPECTORS – Environmental health officers are being given two suitable and reliable vehicles to carry out their duties at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA). Wayne Walrond, the acting deputy general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), told the DAILY NATION that this was one of the issues addressed at a meeting yesterday morning to resolve a number of the health inspectors’ concerns. The officers had complained that the two vehicles which they had been using for over ten years were not in good working condition and had become unreliable. As a result, they were walking back and forth to aircrafts in the sun and rain to carry out inspections and clearance, but this was taking a toll on them.  (DN)
VAT DEBTS WRITE-OFF AS AMENDMENTS PASS – The Labour Party administration has kept a mini-budget pledge made shortly after coming to power last year,  writing off outstanding Value Added Tax (VAT) debts from its first four years and waived their penalties and arrears. But an outspoken Opposition voice in the Senate condemned the amendment to the VAT Act as forgiving “criminals” for evading the tax. As she introduced the VAT Amendment Bill in the Senate during its post-lunch session, Government Senator Kay McConney said: “Following further consultation with the Barbados Revenue Authority, it was determined that we would write off the unpaid taxes from 1996 to 2000, and the waiver of penalties and interest incurred on arrears should start from January 1, 2001, and extend until December 2017.” But Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn strongly disagreed, declaring the defaulters “criminals”, some of whom were among the bigger companies on the island –  according to a register of defaulters he perused in the Registry Department –  should be made to pay their outstanding debts. Senator Franklyn declared: “This bill is purporting to forgive criminals, people who received money on behalf of the Government and kept it. “The people who did this should have been hauled before the court, not forgiven. “When you pay VAT on an item, the businessman should put the VAT amount aside to pay it to the Government. “Now you are asking this Senate to breach the Constitution and forgive a crime.” Senator Franklyn added: “If you refuse to pay VAT, income tax or NIS, [the] director can file an unpaid tax certificate to say certain taxes were not paid; this becomes a judgement of the court. “You have to go to court and prove you did not owe the money. All Government has to do is renew these judgements every five years.” His colleague, Senator Crystal Drakes, queried why those four years – 1996 to 2000 – were chosen and whether any VAT defaulters had approached the Mia Mottley administration calling for debt relief. The economist queried: “Why these four years? VAT started in 1996, but you can only owe VAT if you have collected it. “If you were going to write off VAT and had to choose a four-year period, you could have tried 2008 to 2012 after the global recession when many businesses were challenged, but was 1996 to 2000 a difficult time, too? “I also want to know if anyone came knocking on Government’s doors asking for relief from their outstanding taxes because we are not aware of this. “Does the Government know how much money is being written off or waived? “VAT is supposed to bring in $948 million, or 30 per cent of the revenue we have to make for this year, yet according to my colleague’s findings, the penalties, arrears and interest we are seeking to write off add up to a billion dollars.” Responding to the Opposition senators’ claims, Senator McConney said: “The tax penalties and interest have not been waived from 1996 to 2000, but only penalties and interest for January 2001 to December 2017”. She stressed that it was not debt forgiveness, but more of a debt write-off, in that “the penalties and interest will only take effect as long as the tax arrears are paid off or an arrangement is made with the [Revenue Authority] before the deadline given to do so”. In support of the amendment, Senator Lynette Holder, long-time chief executive of the Small Business Association, declared that the previous Government’s failure to pay out VAT refunds had contributed in part to the demise of several smaller enterprises in recent years. “Between 2015 and 2018, [the SBA] did a survey and 240 small firms closed their doors. “Not all of them were owed VAT refunds, but they were impacted by what was happening economically at the time, and they could not maintain their competitiveness. “This bill is correcting a wrong in my view, as we would have owed millions in refunds and because the last Government refused to pay, it might have caused these businesses to go under.” Senator McConney said that the outstanding VAT had become difficult to collect and in some instances, the defaulters had died or their businesses had closed down. She insisted: “While we have ‘written off’ the debt, it does not mean the taxpayers do not still owe it. “In fact, the BRA has recently put out a request for proposals for debt collectors, because we intend to go after our defaulters.”(BT)
MPS HAIL ‘FREEDOM OF BARBADOS’ HONOUR –The creation of Barbados’ highest alternative national honour, the Order of The Freedom of Barbados, has been hailed by lawmakers as a step forward on the nation’s “road to emancipation” as they passed a bill for the honour last night. The new honour is being introduced as an equivalent to the Knight or Dame of St Andrew – the patron saint of Barbados whose feast day of November 30 is also Independence Day. In introducing the bill, the Prime Minister suggested the honour, to be styled ‘FB’, is to be granted to those who opt not to accept a knighthood from the Head of State – the Queen. During debate on the bill, MP for St James South Sandra Husbands said it was an important moment for her, as it was a signal that Barbadians are now beginning to celebrate their own achievements. “I was born in a Barbados where that which was foreign was better. That which came from the Mother Country was desirable… was pointed to as that to which you must aspire. “And so our psyche was riddled with self-hatred where we were unable to value that which came from ourselves…. We were taught to venerate what was made by others,” she said. For her colleague, Trevor Prescod, the MP for St Michael East, the honour was an indication that Barbados no longer needed validation from its former colonial masters. Prescod, a prominent Pan-African activist, declared: “We don’t want any British validation to know who we are and to know that we are human beings, and to know that we are great.” But he acknowledged that not everyone would welcome the new honour. He said: “We still have an educated elite, sad to say, and that is why you have to have an honour like this because the educated elite would not even want to be associated with this, because this is no honour for them. “So this is the honour for the people from the trenches; the people who’ve made significant contributions in Barbados. And it’s not to be trivialised because it does not have the sanction of the British Monarchy.” Prescod further argued that it was of even greater significance, as the country’s highest honour will now be indigenous and not from the ‘British throne’. “In the post-independence period, there are people in Barbados today they don’t hold any respect because of that psychological damage of not believing that we are people of importance and that we can contribute anything to the development of Barbados. “There are still those people who still believe that they should be given special privileges in this country. So this is a major transformation. “And what we have to do now is to address that miseducation that we had prior to independence, radically transform it, and I believe that is what we are focussing on as we look at the removal of the so-called Eleven Plus, all those areas of social stratification. “You cannot build a society that is based on equity and equality and inherent in the educational system it has in those areas of social stratification. You can’t do it.” MP for St Michael South Central Marsha Caddle said that the new honour represents the importance of having a new national consciousness. Using the opportunity to address criticism of her natural hairstyle, she said it was important for young Barbadians to have people and values that represent where they came from and what they look like. She said: “Some years ago I made a decision that… it was perfectly acceptable for the hair that naturally grows from my head to be presented to the world as who I am. “And I remember when I decided to stop processing my hair with these chemicals that really you sit in the chair at the stylist and you just cannot wait for the lady to tell you please come and sit at the sink to wash it out because you feel as if your head is on fire. “I don’t make any judgement for what other people choose to do but I made the decision as a descendant of African slaves, as a black Barbadian woman, that I would no longer go in that direction and that the way I was born and presented naturally to the world as a black woman was perfectly acceptable in every context. “Perfectly acceptable in a professional context, perfectly acceptable… in any way that I choose to present as an economist, as a proud member of parliament for St Michael South Central, as a young black Barbadian woman.” St Philip West MP John King, the Minister for Culture, called on his fellow legislators to “let this also be a time when we free ourselves from some of the historical incidents that may keep us in a particular place”. Said the veteran calypsonian turned politician: “But it is my job as a person who has the honour of seeing Barbados in a completely different light, having been born in the colonial mother country, having to suffer racism from five years old and then having the privilege to come to this country to experience something completely different but in many ways very similar: classism. “And so I have a perspective of what it means to be able to look in the mirror at yourself and have a confidence that says that you have the ability to be whatever and whoever that you decide you want to be.” He added that the new honour is a chance for all Barbadians regardless of ethnic background “to decide who and what we want the rest of the world to know”. SEMINAL MOVE – The Caribbean’s push for reparations from descendant beneficiaries of slavery made major headway today as a Scottish university that acknowledged it earned millions from the trade signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the University of the West Indies. The agreement will result in the joint establishment and management of a research facility dedicated to studies that lead to various development projects in the region. No date has been set, but the agreement calls for the building of joint facilities at both UWI and the University of Glasgow. The Scottish university, as an act of reparation for slavery, has agreed to contribute £20 million to the institution to fund its operations and research programmes over the next 20 years, officials said. At the abolition of slavery in 1833, the British government compensated slaveowners £20 million for their ‘loss of property’ as enslaved African people were emancipated. The buyout, estimated to have been worth 40 per cent of the British national budget of the day, is now worth about £17 billion in today’s money. The Scottish university – founded in 1451, the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world – decided to take the step following research done some four years ago that proved that it had benefitted directly from the proceeds of slavery and the slave trade totalling some £200 million in today’s value. Addressing the MOU signing ceremony from UWI’s Kingston headquarters, Sir Hilary Beckles said the partnership represents “a commitment to fund development solutions for the people of the Caribbean as they continue to battle with the debilitating legacies of slavery and colonization”. He added: “We have agreed to jointly establish and manage an institution for collaborative research action that will mobilize historical knowledge to be galvanized to meet the development needs of the Caribbean and Africa. “This institution will be called the Glasgow Caribbean Centre for Development Institution. “Its collaborative research agenda will revolve around broad areas and issues of public health, development economics and cultural empowerment and related themes and subjects.” Sir Hilary said the centre will be administered by a joint board and its activities and allocations will be “guided by the principle of reparatory justice”. UWI is also looking at the possibility of establishing an “online slavery museum”, he said. He said other universities in the UK were in the process of “looking at the matter” of reparation and at least two of them have so far agreed to “research and then stand up and repair”. Dr David Duncan, Chief Operating Officer and University Secretary and Chair of History of Slavery Committee at the University of Glasgow, said the intention behind signing of the MOU was “to be honest as we can about the past and be forward looking and respect the different experiences we have had historically and establish a true partnership”. Stating that the university could not go back and change the past, he said the signing of the MOU could be seen as a part of the learning institution’s way of saying “sorry”. Dr Duncan explained that the agreement paved the way for his institution to raise more awareness about slavery and reparation, offer scholarships for students of minority ethnic background, carry out further research on slavery and its consequences and further collaborate with institutions in countries affected by slavery. Stating that Glasgow University was willing to share its expertise with others, Dr Duncan said he was hoping that the MOU between the two learning institutions would serve as an example for others to follow. He declared: “We are absolutely determined as two universities that this will not be a ‘no action, talk only’ agreement. “It will be the beginning of a real partnership. “We are not in the business of researching and running, this will be an enduring bond between the two institutions.” In a recorded video message, Prime Minister Mia Mottley welcomed the signing of the agreement, though acknowledging that “no amount of time could erase the scares” of those affected by slavery. Describing the MOU as “a step in the right direction” and “a start of saying sorry and dealing with the consequences”, she believed once the research process was started then the region would be able to address a number of developmental issues. Mottley, who chairs CARICOM’s prime ministerial subcommittee on reparation, said she hoped others would follow in the British university’s footsteps.(BT)
MOST PSV CONDUCTORS ‘ILLEGAL’ –Eight out of ten conductors of privately-owned public service vehicles are unlicensed, according to a survey commissioned by the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT), the association’s chairman has revealed. And the alliance’s head, Roy Raphael, said the study points to job cuts in the public service under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme as thwarting efforts to clean-up bad behaviour in public transport. With the layoffs and job market uncertainty which followed the austerity measures, the number of unlicensed conductors operating in the privately-owned public transport system has increased tremendously, the survey claims. Raphael told Barbados TODAY: “It is very disturbing to see that 80 per cent of the conductors on our roads are not legal conductors. “We conducted our own survey and we would have carried out our own investigations, in some cases going as far as to ride on the buses to see for ourselves. “We are seeing a worrying trend where persons just give someone a day job so that they could earn some money. “We understand the unemployment situation and we know that things got really tough for some people after the layoffs, but this is a matter that must be addressed. It was a growing trend before, but it became worse after the layoffs.” Raphael told Barbados TODAY that the survey shows that the majority of the unregistered newcomers are young people. The AOPT head insisted that he is happy that the sector can provide jobs for young people, but noted that the influx of the conductors would only serve to further tarnish the industry’s image, while placing the youngsters in serious legal jeopardy. He said: “These persons are putting themselves in some serious legal implications because they are not legally allowed to approach the public for money. “The law gives the passengers the right not to pay under those circumstances. “Under the Road Traffic Act, a conductor must present his badge or wearing a uniform while walking through the aisle to pick up money.” He contended that quite often, illegal conductors were the ones who tend to create the most problems in the industry. “The ones that are illegal create more problems than the ones that are licensed. They [unlicensed conductors] don’t wear the uniform and some of them disgrace the entire PSV sector because they are not controlled,” the AOPT chairman said. Raphael told Barbados TODAY that his organisation is moving to work with the PSV pirates to help them go legit. He said: “Truth be told, we look forward to having more conductors in the system and we want to encourage those persons who are not legal to become legal. “From September we are prepared to create a special class just for them. We want to walk them through the process of how you can get a conductor licence.” He noted that there is currently space in the system for more drivers and conductors, but it was pointless to have an inflow of people who do further harm to a system already plagued with discipline concerns. (BT)
JAIL ROUGH – Procedural gaps in the trial and the absence of physical evidence in the face of statements an accused man apparently made but never signed led an appeals court to vacate the conviction of Omar Dacosta Holder for the 2005 triple murder of a young mother and her infant children. The Court of Appeal ruled “reluctantly” that the capital murder case against him should have never gone to trial and declared the conviction unsafe. This morning’s decision comes almost a month after Holder’s attorney Andrew Pilgrim, QC, delivered a tongue-lashing on the court for its tardiness in handing down a judgment in an appeal made on Holder’s behalf back in 2013. The former murder convict of Pasture Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael had been on death row for the past decade after he was sentenced to death when a jury found him guilty of the murders of 20-year-old Sakina Walrond, her son Shaqkem Gittens, aged 3, and two-month-old daughter Sha-Mya Mapp on March 31, 2005. In handing down the ruling Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson explained that the Crown’s case against Holder was “predicated largely” on several oral statements as well as a written statement which he allegedly dictated but refused to sign. The “appellant never initialled the statements to the police nor did he sign the so-called written statements, which he disavowed and attempted to destroy by chewing. “Next, it is clear to us that both statements were oral since neither statements was ever acknowledged by the appellant’s signature or initial”, Sir Marston said. During the trial, the court heard that Holder had allegedly told police when questioned that “my Creator tell me to make a sacrifice” before hitting the young mother on the head as she slept with one of her children moments before setting their Haggatt Hall home on fire. But according to the Chief Justice, no ‘voir dire’ – a preliminary examination of a witness or a juror by a judge or attorney – was conducted at trial since the appellant never disputed the reliability of the statements and never alleged that he was in any way forced or induced to make the statements. Sir Marston said: “In the absence of any eyewitness, fingerprint or other trace evidence or DNA or other forensic evidence or any other evidence to corroborate the appellant’s oral statements, we hold and do so with the greatest reluctance that this case ought not to have gone to the jury at all, however credible the oral statements may have appeared to have been. “Accordingly, there is merit in the appellant’s contention that the verdict is unsafe and unsatisfactory in so far as the case ought not to have gone to the jury. There was accordingly a lurking doubt about the verdict, the appeal must, therefore, be allowed. The appeal is allowed, the conviction is quashed and the sentence be set aside. Mr Holder, that’s the judgment from the court.” Several minutes later, Holder walked out of the Supreme Court Complex into the arms of his older sister, accompanied by attorney-at-law Kyle Walkes who was substituting for Pilgrim in the case. After speaking with his lawyer and a nephew who was also outside the court and phoning family members to break the news, Holder told Barbados TODAY that he was happy to be freed. But Holder, who claimed he was “set up”, also declared himself a changed man after years in “horrible, horrible” prison. He said: “It’s good to be free, the Lord sees and knows…. Obviously, I get set up so I know that victory was always on the way and I was on death row for ten years and three months and jail horrible. “Getting water and bread ‘pun an evening and something name ‘manna rice’ that ain’t even in society. “’Manna rice’ you goin’ get it every day; if you refuse it, nothing else ain’t coming. Jail horrible, horrible place to be. I am so glad that the Father [get me out].” He continued: “All I want society to know is that they tarnish my reputation, my character and everything but the Father sees and knows and deliver me from the hardship that I was going through and I got ‘nuff to thank the Lord for. “The 14 years that I went in, I am not the same person. I am a changed man – people will see it gradually as I walk the walk and talk the talk. “I just want to thank Pilgrim for the hard work he and his associates [put in], for the good job they put up and do. I just want to be with my family now and it is nice to be free.” His older sister, who declined to give her name, said she was elated with the news. She said: “Put God in front and everything will work out. “I never doubted but I was not looking for it so soon. “I am so, so excited, overjoyed. I am glad that he is home. I just hope that he will… move on and put God first in anything that he do.” Holder had some advice for the youth especially in the face of the violence plaguing society. “I want the youths to know that jail ain’t no bed of roses and they better check themselves. “Crime don’t pay. I was there long. I was there 14 years, three months and days so I can tell you it hard and rough. “See crime and lef’ it alone. I glad that my family was there for me from the start they didn’t lef’ me. “Think before you do things, boy; jail rough. “It’s a horrible place to be so I won’t even want my enemy go there,” he said.(BT)
FRAUD AWAITING HIS FATE – When St Joseph resident Jason McDonald Phillips presented a forge cheque to a teller at Republic Bank Barbados Limited three years ago he received “20 hard $100 bills” in return. Principal Crown Counsel Krystal Delaney gave the evidence today as she read the facts of three fraud cases following guilty pleas from Phillips, of Suriname Road, Horse Hill, St Joseph. The 38-year-old man admitted before Madam Justice Pamela Beckles in the No. 5 Supreme Court to uttering a forge cheque on June 8, 2017 with intent to defraud the mentioned bank of $2,000 and obtaining the said amount for the bank. He also pleaded guilty to money laundering in that between June 8 and November 14, 2017 he disposed of the amount being the proceeds of crime. Prosecutor Delaney said the owner of Hunte’s Nurseries Ltd located in St John realised that he had misplaced one of his cheque books in June 2017. After searching for it with no luck he went to the bank’s Broad Street branch and made a check of his financial history only to discover a transaction which he said he knew nothing about. The matter was reported to police and the necessary investigations were conducted leading to Phillips’ arrest. Under questioning the now convicted man told lawmen he received the cheque from a man named Edwards who he knew from prison for a “long time”. He said he went to the bank got the “20 hard $100 bills” from the teller while Edwards stayed outside. On his exit Edwards gave him $600 after informing him that he could not give him half of the amount as he had other people dealing with. Phillips who has 24 prior convictions including assault, theft and burglary will return to court on November 11 when a report on his time spent on remand at HMP Dodds and a presentencing report will be read to the court.(BT)
ALLEYNE REMANDED – A 25-year-old man has been remanded to prison for allegedly committing several offences against police officers as they executed their duties. Jamar Anderson Alleyne, of Farnum Land, Chapman Lane, St Michael is accused of assaulting and resisting police constable Devon Subhan in the execution of his duties on July 8. The unemployed man is also alleged to have uttered the threatening words, “Boy, you tase me, I going to kill you out here,” to officer Subhan with intent to cause him to believe that immediate, unlawful violence would be used against him. He is also accused of resisting and assaulting Sergeant Andrew Pilgrim in the execution of his duties on July 30. Alleyne pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Sergeant Kevin Forde in objecting to bail pointed to, among other things, the nature of the offences and said that the accused is alleged to have threatened the life of a uniformed police officer. He also pointed to the fact that Alleyne was presently on bail on another matter. Alleyne was sent to HMP Dodds until August 28 after addressing Magistrate Douglas Frederick. Meantime 54-year-old Elvis Avan Haynes, of Philip Gap, Lightfoot Lane, St Michael also appeared before Magistrate Frederick today. He is alleged to have incited Alleyne to resist Sergeant Pilgrim as he executed his duties on July 30. Haynes pleaded not guilty to the charge and with no objection was released on $2,000 bail. He will make his next appearance in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on November 25. Also appearing in court on that day is 27-year-old Jabarri Lamario Haynes of the same address who was granted $2,500 bail. He is accused of and pleaded not guilty to obstructing Sergeant Pilgrim also on July 30.(BT)
SERIAL CROOK – Lesanto Orelston Hydrafel Lavine was back today two weeks after he was rearrested in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court following a grant of bail on drug charges. There was no going home for the 33-year-old of Well Gap, Cave Hill, St Michael as he was sentenced to more than three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to several criminal charges. Lavine admitted that he broke the glass at the Digital Barbados Ltd, Sky Mall location as a trespasser and stole three cellular phones and three tablets totaling $5, 243 on July 4. He also admitted to being a trespasser when he entered Golden Dragon Restaurant between June 15 and 16, stealing a $600 cash register; the Home Improvement Hardware and Supplies between June 22 and 23, stealing several items totaling $441.66 including a respirator and a boom box belonging to K.J’s Holding Inc; Round Hay Pharmacy between June 22 and 23 with intent to commit theft; Saving Plus Supermarket, stealing $413.78 worth of alcoholic beverages; SOL Jackmans between June 17 and 18, stealing 35 boxes of cigarettes worth $361 as well as Friction Clothing Store and stealing 48 shirts, eight pairs of jeans and five pairs of slippers worth $7,570 on July 8, 2019. Lavine also admitted while his co-accused 18-year-old Taryn T’Shawn Lynch, of 1st Avenue, Alleyne’s Lane, Passage Road, St Michael pleaded not guilty to entering Online Consultancies between June 19 and 20 and stealing $2,187.20 in items including nine tablets belonging to Emma Pile and R.S Friendship Mini Mart between June 17 and 18 where he made away with $403 cash, three bottles of brandy and 15 packets of cigarettes totaling $760.50 belonging to Samuel Sergeant. Accused Lynch was granted $3,000 bail to reappear before Magistrate Douglas Frederick on November 25. In outlining the facts Sergeant Edwin Pinder said the owners secured their establishments only to return the following day to discover the glass windows broken with a hole big enough for someone to enter. In some instances Lavine was caught on CCTV footage. Lavine also pleaded guilty to a 2018 charge of going equipped in that on December 5 not being at his place of abode he had with him four screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench and a hammer for use in the course of or in connection with burglary. He was sentenced to nine months for that crime and six months on the other charges. Five of those sentences will run consecutively with the nine-month sentence and the remainder will run concurrent.  (BT)
CAR THIEF ADMITS GUILT – A Christ Church man who stole a $19, 500 Toyota Corolla three years ago and sold it for $1,500 will make his next appearance in the No. 5 Supreme Court on September 3. Ryan Oneal Wickham, of Wellington Drive, Enterprise Coast Road pleaded guilty to stealing the 2004 NZE model vehicle belonging to Tamara Mayers on June 15, 2017. Principal Crown Counsel Krystal Delaney told Madam Justice Pamela Beckles that Mayers left the island on vacation leaving her car with a trusted friend who parked the vehicle outside his St Philip home. When he went out about 2:45a.m. to the newspaper man the vehicle was still in the location that he left it. However, when he returned around 5:40a.m. the car was nowhere in sight. The matter was reported to police and Wickham was subsequently detained. Under questioning he told police, “yes I take up the NZE car”. He said he passed the car some nights before and decided to return for it. Wickham told police he broke into the vehicle and “made a search for money and valuables but ain’t find none”. He then drove the car to Husbands, St James, switched licence plates and sold it to a ‘wrecker man’ for $1,500 and bought drugs, food and alcohol with the money. However, Delaney told the court that the man denied buying the vehicle from Wickham. The following month, July 2017, the stolen vehicle was found at Bucks, St Thomas burnt to a crisp. “With respect to the case I believe that the same person who had the car is who burn it,” Wickham told Justice Beckles today. When he returns on September 3 he is expected to be arraigned on additional charges. Wickham will then make his next appearance in the High Court on November 5 when an officer from the Probation Department will read a presentencing report on his life.(BT)
ANTI-DRUG CRUSADER ‘WILL MISS BREATHALYZER’– Anti-drug crusader, Pastor Victor Roach, who campaigned relentlessly for the introduction of breathalyzer testing did not live to see his efforts become the law of the land, friends said today at his funeral. The former president of the National Committee for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Dependency (NCPADD), was remembered at a thanksgiving service at St Philip-The-Less Anglican Church, this afternoon as a jovial and committed man whose work in Barbados and around the world was irreplaceable. The 64-year-old pastor died on July 19 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He had been ill since 2015. Pastor Everette Howell, who delivered the sermon, told the packed Boscobelle, St Peter church that those who admired Roach’s work, should honour him through making contributions to complete projects he started. “To honour him, is to make sure that those things that he didn’t get to compete will be completed, like the breathalyzer testing that he talked about for many years, but folks seem to be afraid of going there. “Alcohol and drugs and other stuff that is coming in now, those of us who are still around and still alive, we can fill the breach so that his passing will not be in vain,” he said.   In 2007, Roach spearheaded a petition for the introduction of breath testing with 40,000 signatures under The Coalition For the Adoption of Breathalyser. He said he believed breathalyzer testing should have been included in the 2006 amendment to the Road Traffic Act. But nine months after Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Mark Cummins promised that the testing apparatus would be functional in a matter of weeks, no visible progress has yet  been made. In March, Minister of Transport and Works, Dr William Duguid, at a national consultation on land transport said: “the last requirement is the implementation”. He told Barbados TODAY regarding the promised breathalyzers: “There are some security measures that have to be put in place that are not in place yet.” Sources confirmed to this newspaper five months ago that Government was at an “advanced stage” with the implementation of the testing and that the machines had arrived on the island and were with the ministry. Drug Education Officer with the National Council on Substance Abuse, Brian “Bumba” Payne, said Pastor Roach was one of the early stakeholders involved in NCSA’s drug prevention fight. Payne also commented that Roach’s push for the introduction of breathylyzer testing was yet to be activated. He said: “Victor Roach was the heart, soul and mind of NCPADD. This gave him tremendous leverage to speak out against the ravages of alcoholism and the self-destruction of illegal drugs. “He took every opportunity to agitate, educate and enlighten. “Victor was the founder of the idea of a Drug Awareness Month in Barbados. “His sobering and articulate voice will be missed as we wrestle with new manifestations of the drug phenomenon locally, regionally and internationally. “His campaign for a healthy, drug-free Barbados will never be forgotten. He also used the church as a vehicle to disseminate messages to the public,” he said. Pastor Roach was a member of a number of boards and committees. He was the founder of the Barbados Drug Hotline, member of the Royal Barbados Police Force Crime Prevention Panel, and introduced the US-based Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) programme to Barbados. He also initiated the lobby for A Smoke-Free Cricket World Cup 2007 and was a member of the International Association of Drug Treatment Courts Board. A district pastor and evangelist of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he was also a Drug Education Officer with the Ministry of Education and chaplain of the Barbados Defence Force. Former Chairman of the Men’s Educational Support Association (MESA), Ralph Boyce, and representatives of several non-governmental organisations attended the service. Family member, Mary Moore-Hinds, spoke of his affectionate, soft, jovial side, and infectious smile, as she reflected on his great sense of humour. She said she was not surprised that the Combermere alumnus’s intelligence led him to become the spokesman for the family. Moore-Hinds said: “He was never too busy when you called him that he could not answer. He was always smiling. That is Victor. Victor, you will be gone, but we would hold you close in our thoughts and our hearts.” Musical selections and tributes also came from the Egvinalle Nursing Home and the University of the Southern Caribbean Alumni of which Roach was a member. FINAL VOTING FOR PEOPLE’S MONARCH – Will it be a Fair Sa day for Hypasounds? Will Sometime come tomorrow for Leadpipe? The two are into the finals of the Starcom FLOW People’s Monarch competition. A new monarch will walk away with the $15 000 cash prize, as reigning People’s Monarch Mikey was ousted from the quarter-finals. Yesterday’s last semi-final pitted Hypasounds (Fair Sa) against Lil Rick (Jam Down). Hypa received fan love with 65 per cent of the votes against Rick’s 35 per cent. The first semi had Leadpipe’s Sometime against Shaquille’s Darlin’, and the former received 86 per cent. There were 30 entrants in the wild card segment in which voting by the public narrowed the final number to eight. The grand final voting day is today, and the winner will be announced tomorrow. Voting is by FLOW phone only or online at HOTT 95.3FM. (DN)
‘FULL FLIGHTS’ FOR FESTIVAL –As the last lap for the Crop Over Festival heats up, tourism officials are expecting more merry-makers to fly into the island this weekend. “The information from the hoteliers indicates that the season is on par with previous years and we are aware there have been comments about insufficient seats from some of the markets, so we are aware that the flights have been coming in relatively full. We believe the quantity of overseas visitors will probably be comparable to previous years,” chief executive officer (CEO) at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) William “Billy” Griffith said. Likewise, the chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Senator Rudy Grant also anticipated a positive performance. (DN)
PM CHAIRS CROP OVER ‘LAS’ LAP’ PLANNING – Government moved today to make sure its second turn at putting on Crop Over ends “without blemish” as the Prime Minister led a meeting of national security and cultural industry chiefs this afternoon to fine-tune logistics and public safety plans for the last-lap weekend. The high-level team which also examined lessons learned from the season’s past events, included Attorney General Dale Marshall, Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith, Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force Colonel Glyne Grannum and Minister of Culture John King, Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Jerome Walcott and Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation Carol Roberts-Reifer, They acknowledged some hiccups at last weekend’s Soca Monarch competition with congested access to the National Botanical Gardens at Waterford, leaving some patrons unsure of where to go once they had parked. In a bid to avoid a recurrence, the high-level team has set up a park-and-ride system for the busy Waterford area, after consultations between the National Cultural Foundation and the Transport Board, Transport Authority, and public service vehicle operators, with the input of the security forces. From Friday, patrons to the Pic-O-De-Crop Finals will be able to park at the National Stadium, Queen’s College, the NCF carpark, Wildey Gymnasium and Weymouth “B” playing field and take a bus to the event at Kensington Oval. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister said: “These parking areas will be well lit and properly secured so patrons need not worry about their safety or the security of their property. “I want to thank Barbadians for conducting themselves in a manner that has allowed us all to enjoy an incident-free festival so far, and we have put arrangements in place to complement that behaviour so we can make it through this long, festive weekend without blemish.” Roberts-Reifer explained that patrons using the park-and-ride system will be charged $5 per ride, with the service starting at 6 p.m. and ending one hour after the calypso finals climax at Kensington Oval. Given the limited parking space around the Oval, and that the Foreday Morning Jamimmediately afterwards will bring thousands of revellers into the area, she said it was critical that patrons make use of the park-and-ride to avoid traffic congestion and frustration. “As the world looks on this weekend while we are at the height of revelry, I appeal to Barbadians to also display their best behaviour,” the NCF CEO said.(BT)

EXO's Kai Talks Independence, Motivation And His Incredible Career
There’s the saying that you’ve made it into the upper echelons of fame when you achieve single-name status. Monikers like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, and Billie Eilish ring a bell for they’ve relentlessly dominated not just the music charts, but pop culture, fashion and news in general. Then there’s also Kai. The 26-year-old main dancer of popular K-pop boy group EXO and a member of global K-pop boyband SuperM, beloved for his powerful moves, and experimental style — read: crop tops — that challenges the traditional markers of masculinity.
Today, it’s clear that the space Kai inhabits has only gotten bigger since his debut eight years ago, most recently wearing the hat of Gucci’s first-ever Korean male global ambassador — dismantling cultural boundaries and parlaying the mononym, Kai, beyond the K-Pop realm. In this cover interview, the superstar chats candidly about going global, being independent, and why he felt like he needed an Instagram account.
Some time ago you revealed the results of your personality test on Instagram live. With regard to the question “Have you wondered about your existence?”, you answered that you have.
I think I have always thought about the question, “Why was I born?”. Also, I often wonder about questions like, “Why am I not born as someone else but as me; is the world I see through my eyes different from another person’s point of view?”
You revealed that you have an INFJ personality type based on the MBTI — it seems quite accurate.
I don’t really remember my result, so I plan to take it again. My family has taken it too, and after seeing my mum’s result I thought it seemed like a very credible test [laughs]. My mum is a dreamer. Even before I debuted, she said, “You like to dress up, and because I brought you up in that way you are definitely going to have something to do with fashion brands in the future.” Naturally, when I became a Gucci ambassador, she was ecstatic.
Your Instagram feed’s theme is filled with “EXO”, “family” and “Gucci”.
I created my account in 2018 when I was having a shoot with ELLE for Gucci’s Cruise show. I’ve always known that social media was important, but I really felt that even more when a lot of celebrities asked for my account during the show.
You participated in the filming of a global eyewear campaign that was revealed not too long ago in the Amoeba Music store in Los Angeles. Was it a special experience for you as a musician?
Of course, it was supposed to be closed down and so the fact that I managed to take pictures and create memories of that historical place made me feel happy and blessed. The production crew were all non-Koreans, and the atmosphere at the location was different as well so it was all very nerve-racking. I felt like I had gone back in time to when I first debuted.
Even Kai gets nervous. Have you had any other similar experiences when a location you liked disappeared or closed down?
The old SM building I grew up in when I was a trainee and formed so many memories [at] just recently underwent some remodeling works. The rooftop and a few other spaces where I spent so much of my time have all disappeared. Those were places that meant so much to me, so with the new changes made, I was able to actually realise how much time has passed.
There are many people with a good [sense of] style. [Your] outstanding point is that when you try out different styles, it doesn’t seem foreign [to you].
I think that cool and pretty things can be captured easily but capturing a specific concept — in terms of fashion — can be a difficult feat. I use that mentality as an excuse to try out different styles of fashion that I would not have dared to in my daily life, such as the reggae hairstyle that I did in Growl, or the short crop jacket that I wore during my promotions for Obsession. I think two weeks is more than enough to prepare and try out new things [laughs].
You have made appearances in variety programmes such as Knowing Brothers and Radio Star last year. Were these experiences enjoyable?
Thanks to the humorous moments that came about, I actually received many offers from other shows. However, I was worried that the Kai that I portray on stage could be hindered by my different sides shown on TV, and that it might be difficult for anyone to focus on my performances due to the drastic differences.
I can’t not mention SuperM’s group promotions. Three different groups under SM came together to form this sub-unit, as part of a project!
When EXO went on our American tours, we experienced that culturally, races and traditions had been blurred. I could feel that there was less of a “line” separating us. I was able to approach fans more easily; I don’t think there’s a limit to K-Pop. I don’t need to deliberately mention the [global] success of Parasite. The fact that I became the global ambassador of Gucci eyewear proves that race does not matter at all, but it’s more about one’s talents and charisma.
Personally, I felt the progress of K-Pop after watching the safety briefing videos that SuperM and BoA shot together for Korean Airlines.
I am too shy to watch it, but I did receive a lot of video stills of myself from my friends and they didn’t look good at all. They keep sending me parts where I look bad [laughs].
Due to your performances and dancing, I think the pressure on the stage is incredible.
Usually I don’t have much worries, stress, or even anger, but it’s different right before going up on stage. I get so stressed to the point it can be tiring. Honestly, waking up at six in the morning with hardly any sleep just to pre-record our performances for music shows — it sounds impossible. I’m only able to show 20 per cent of my all and that is really sad. Last year was such a busy year, I hardly had any time to recharge myself nor did I feel I was ready to stand on stage, but the show still had to go on. I was not fully satisfied with the performances as a dancer, but it just has to be endured.
What are the reasons that you are able to carry on despite all the difficulties?
The contentment after I get things done, and the comfort that I was able to pull through. On the other hand, I think the sincerity I feel towards everything I do and the constant ambition to do things better is a huge motivation and a relief when I accomplish it. If I don’t feel this way, it will mean that this work no longer means as much as it did to me in the past. Showing my fans the best version of myself, and the comfort and happiness I feel when I’m contented with my performance or work, is really important to me. In the past I couldn’t even sleep after making one mistake, but I sleep really well now [laughs].
And dancing is still something you enjoy?
I’ve been dancing for almost 20 years now. I can’t not dance. Even when I was young, I’d dance everywhere and anywhere, to the extent my mum said, “Stop dancing, it’s embarrassing.”
It’s well known that you have some really special and tight relationships with a few people around you. Do you get any inspiration from their advice, or from their influence?
I’m not the type to ask for advice from anyone first. Even when I ask what’s the better of two choices, I already have an answer [that I’ve] decided on in my mind. I’ve always felt that I needed to be independent; to [think for myself] when I decide, in order to be able to say that it is “mine”.
So, you’re a man of few words around people.
If they want me to be. If necessary, I will say good things, but more [so] the realistic point of view. I always think of the worst possible situation before saying anything [when giving advice], so those who know me well will not ask me trivial questions. When things go south or important decisions to be made, they will look for me. As for myself, I humbly listen to criticism or harsh words.
“Sexy” and “beautiful” are words that you probably hear a lot, but your fans call you “cute”. Which sides of yourself do you think are cute?
None! Even if I have thought of myself as cute, I won’t say it or admit it [laughs].
There are many people who idolise you as they see you as an iconic person. Does [the phrase] “a symbolic beauty of youth” or any other nicknames that you carry, feel a little too exaggerated?
Everyone views me differently, so I can’t say that it’s burdensome or exaggerated. Instead, I’m thankful. I don’t want to think of these nicknames or titles consciously as I live my life. Like, “Oh since they call me this, I should try to behave a little more as such”. I only want to show my true self without having other considerations — always.
What do you consider to be beautiful?
Definitely cool clothes, sculptures, drawings and paintings. When I look at some really good-looking people, I feel that that is beauty too. But personally, I think that true beauty lies in moments. Past memories and ordinary moments that when you look back, [you] realise that what you felt back then was more beautiful and precious than any other happiness that you’ve experienced.
A line from the drama The Miracle We Met pops into my mind — “Memory isnot [just] a record of time, but [is always]accompanied by emotions. That’s something surprising we never expect.”
Good memories always bring back rushing emotions, regardless of when you look back at it. That is really beautiful, and that is why I really love watching movies with film static noise, as it seems like I’m looking into someone’s memories.
Your name Jong (鍾) comes from“iron drum bell” and In (仁) comes from “benevolent”. Your grandfather named you that, which means to be as benevolent as the person who rings the morning bell. Throughout your life, have you ever thought about the meaning behind your name?
Hmmm, firstly, I’m not a morning person [laughs], but hitting the bell at dawn means to be of use to someone and to [have] more initiative, so I do want to live up to that and inspire others. Perhaps I could already be doing just that, I’m not sure.
I’m sure you’ve garnered plenty of praise for your dance techniques, but the shoot today focused quite a bit on your looks too. Which feature of yours do you like?
I do like to think that I have my own attractive features, like my small ears or a round bear like nose which most would say is so-so — but I still like them. If I really had to choose, it would be my chin and eyebrows for now. I think these two features make up 80 per cent of my defining look.
What does family mean to you?
Family is family. There may be no one in the world who will be completely on my side, but my family will still accept me as I am. I grew up happily with two siblings, and so if I were to have a family of my own, I always thought three kids would be just nice. But now when I look at my sister struggling with childcare, I realised it’s definitely not something to think lightly of. My family members are also my seniors (sunbae) in life.
Your eight-year anniversary is coming up soon, and you’ve probably been through many hardships. Do you think it is necessary for a person to go through pain to mature?
Looking back now, not all hardships have changed my nature; I personally don’t see the need for a person to go through change and pain in order to mature. But you know there is going to be a tough time for everyone at least once in their lifetime, and it’s not so bad a thing to be positive and think of precious things to get through it. Most importantly, just because you’re going through something difficult doesn’t mean you should hate yourself or be hard on yourself, because the most precious thing in the world is yourself.
Some may look at you and think that you’ve got it all. In spite of this, is there still anything that you wish to have, and is there a further goal you have in mind?
Before my debut, I had a lot of ambitions but the Kai I am today doesn’t have anything else I could wish for. I don’t think the place I am today is my final station but even if it is, I would be okay with that. Even if my debut was the end, I am proud of the life I’ve led, and I would be super proud of whatever I do. I am able to say this confidently because I learnt that the more fixated I am on something, the less happy I am. I learnt that it is better to focus on and enjoy the present; to enjoy doing what you do.
What type of person do you hope to be to your loved ones?
There is only one thing I wish for and that is for them to always be by my side no matter what decisions I make. Likewise, I will do the same.

The Paradalis Paradigm, Ch. III
The final chapter of "The Paradalis Paradigm," an "Essence of Ragnarok" story.
If you didn't see this coming, you clearly don't know me. (And, yes, this really is how the roleplay went.  Er, more-or-less…  There… might be some exaggeration, here-or-there… nyeh heh.)
Word count: 5,692 – Character count: 32,946 Originally written: October 4th, 2018 Slightly revised: October 8th, 2018
Joseph's day goes beyond weird and straight into the fantastic when Kaiya reveals her true plan.
Kaiya Paradalis originally created by Kaiya Canver

After the awkwardness of having a mouthful of odd-tasting liquid spit down his throat, things started to calm back down, for the new couple.  Kaiya had suggested playing some video games – something that Joseph was all for – and, before long, the previous nervous excitement and awkward feelings had been exchanged for feelings of competition and adrenalin!
“What’s the matter, slow-poke?  Can’t keep up?”     The first game that Kaiya popped in was a racing game… one that Joseph hadn’t exactly mastered, at that.  And, though he tried his best to give the bunny-girl a run for her money… he just couldn’t keep pace with her.  Still, he never got too frustrated.  He always had fun racing with his friends.     The next game that they played was a puzzle game… which was a genre that Kaiya had a little trouble with.  But, she had ways of making herself look better…     “H-hey!  Ha hah, s-stop…!”     Which usually involved tickling her opponent or pressing buttons on their controller.  Again, Joseph didn’t mind.  In fact…     “N-no, hey…!  Joe!”     He even got in on that action, a little… which, of course, made the girl return fire…  Not long after, the game controllers were put down and the two ended up wrestling on the couch, each trying to tickle the other while keeping their guard up.
“Nope!”     A bit of a tussle ensued before Kaiya wound up on top.  She held Joseph’s arms up with both of hers and straddled his hips, giving a big, bright grin and letting her tail sway.     “Not gotta happen, Joe!” she teased with a wiggle.     “Okay, but…”  He smirked as he asked, “How are you going to tickle me… when you’ve got my arms up, like this?”     The fox immediately regretted his question and gave a wince.  Something had brushed against his ear… something very soft.     “Like that,” she half-sang, still grinning as she waved her tail in front of his face.     “That’s… that’s not fair…”  Joseph playfully pouted as he said, “My tail isn’t all loose and limber, like yours.  All I can do is this!”     Kaiya giggled a little as she felt his big, bushy fox tail wag against her mid-back and bat against her shoulder-length hair.  It didn’t tickle her, but she was still amused.     “Should’ve thought of that before you got into a tickle fight, hun!”     “But… but, you started it!”     “Aaand… I’m gonna finish it!”     “Wha– no!  Ah…!”
The bunny’s prisoner winced and wiggled as she assaulted his aural flap with the tip of he super-soft tail.  When he refused to laugh, she brought it up and started rubbing it against the inside of his ear.  Then, when he still refused to laugh…     “I… I don’t get it!”     She stopped.
“How are you holdin’ out on me, Joe?” she asked with a stern, somewhat-confused look.     “Not… not ticklish, there…” he panted.     “What do you mean?  You’re blushing and I can hear you breathing hard!”     “Not… not ticklish…” he repeated with heavier emphasis.     “I don’t get it…?”     Joseph went silent, then, biting his lower lip and looking away while folding his ears.  Whatever he was getting at, it was clearly kind of embarrassing…     “Wait…!”     He jolted as Kaiya jumped in-place.  The look on her face told him that she’d had a sudden thought…  He just hoped that she wouldn’t guess…     “Are you saying… you… like it… when I do that?”     That exact thing.
“I-I-I can explain…” the fox stammered with a heavier blush.     “No need!”     He blinked, then, as Kaiya let him go… only to lean down and snuggle his head into her collarbone.  He started to relax… until a sudden poke to the ear startled him.     “K-Kaiya…?” he squeaked.     “I always thought your ears looked like chocolate kisses…” she excitedly whispered.  “Let’s see if they taste like ‘em…!”
Joseph shivered and shuddered as he felt his girlfriend kiss the tip of one ear and nibble the other.  He quivered and quaked as she nipped her way down the side of one and dragged her somewhat-rough, warm, wet tongue up the rim of the other.  And… he panted aloud as she got silly and started sucking on his left while firmly rubbing the right.  He wasn’t sure that she knew what she was doing to him… but, he also started to wonder… if he shouldn’t just let her.     “G-gods…” the fox said in a daze, “K-Kaiya, that feels…”     “Ssshh…” she hushed before rubbing her nose inside his right ear.  He was kind of thankful that she was being so gentle…  It sounded really weird… but, felt pretty alright.
After a few more moments of teasing the fox’s auditory bits, the playful bunny-girl shimmied down and snuggled into her boyfriend’s chest with a purr.  She closed her eyes as he wrapped his arms around her frame… then, she returned the favor to him, content to simply lay there, for a time.     “Think… it’ll always be like this, Kaiya?”     A kiss under his chin was all the answer she would give.  And, perhaps… all the answer that he needed.     “I’m glad we’re boyfriend-and-girlfriend…” he contently sighed.  “I’ve been wahnt–”     The fox blinked.     “That was weird,” he said before clearing his throat.  “Anyway, I’ve been wanting to askew owt– what… why do I kheep–”     His ears perked, then.  Kaiya was giggling… no, she was laughing.  Albeit, quietly.     “Kaiya?” he asked.  “It’s noht– eh… not funny.  It’s… embarrassing…”     “It’s funny, to me…” she chuckled, giving his throat another kiss.     “Yeah, well… it’s not happening to you…  What the… what… happened to my voice?”
Kaiya leaned up, her tail swaying and a secretive sort of smile on her face.  She was looking right into the fox’s golden eyes, her own aqua peepers seemingly trying to read him…  He’d brought a hand up and rubbed his throat… and, in fact, was continuing to rub.     “Kaiya…?” he called in a slightly different, somewhat-smoother voice than normal.  “What… what’s going on?  You know something, don’t you?”     “Why, Joseph…”  She grinned.  “What ever gave you that idea…?”     “My throat feels funny…  My… my body feels… tingly, too.  Ah– K-Kaiya?”     He blinked a couple of times.  Kaiya was pawing at his chest…  At least, he thought she was.  He could feel her hand there… but, at the same time… something felt strange.  It almost felt like… his chest had a little more give to it than before…     “Kaiya…  What… what happened?”     “Don’t you worry your pretty little head, Jo…”  She leaned in, giving him a kiss and pausing before adding, “‘– sephine.’”     “‘Joe’ ‘sephine?’” he asked with another blink.  “I don’t…”     It was then that the wheels in his head started turning.     “‘Joe…’ ‘sephine…’  ‘Joe-sephine–’  Josephine?” he asked.  When his girlfriend gave a sharp, excited sort of nod, he narrowed his eyes and asked, “Why… would you call me that?”     Without a word more, Kaiya hopped off of his body, grabbed his arm, and pulled him up onto his feet.  Not a second later, she dragged him into the bathroom, much to his confusion.
“Kaiya, what the Void is going on…?” Joseph asked with much confusion.  The bunny still had ahold of him and was kind of moving him around.  His head stayed focused on hers, however, despite all her positioning.     “I wanted to do something fun… something we’ve never done, before!” she explained with a wiggle and a hyper sort of giggle.  “Something that we could only do when Nana was away…”     “K… Kaiya?”  He blushed a little, suddenly remembering his thoughts from earlier.  “You don’t mean…”     She kissed him on the cheek before nodding.  “I do…!”     His blush brightened… then, he blinked as she took him by the head and turned him toward the bathroom mirror.     “Say ‘hello’ to the new you, ‘Josephine!’”
For several moments, Joseph just stared at the mirror, confused and blinking.  He really had no idea what Kaiya was talking about…  It wasn’t until he brushed his bangs away from his right eye that he started to notice…     “W… why… why is my hair so heavy?  It’s, like, wilted…”     Indeed, the trio of bangs that usually stood out from his face were stiffly hanging to one side, partly obscuring his eye.     “Did my spray wear off?  Kaiya, did you–”     He paused, then, noticing something else.     “Kaiya…  Why… are you brushing my hair?  A-and… why do I have hair– why do I have hair, Kaiya?!”     Kaiya giggled and even snorted a couple of times.  She had started brushing through the long, shoulder-length locks on Joseph’s head… which had just kind of appeared.  Or, maybe they grew in during sometime during the day…?  He wasn’t sure…  He was just… curious.
“And…” he continued, “wh-why are you styling it like… like a girl’s hairstyle?”     “Silly Jo…” she whispered, giving him a nuzzle on the cheek with purring.  “You ask too many questions!  Just relax and let your girlfriend make you look hot…  ‘kay?”     He hesitated… but, as she gently led him over to the toilet and set him there, he found himself growing more curious…  When she threw a towel around his neck and shoulders, he noticed that… she did seem pretty excited to be doing his hair… even though he really shouldn’t have had “hair,” in the first place.  Really, he didn’t know what was going on, much less why…  But, after a couple moments of thinking… he figured that Kaiya probably had something to do with it… and, as long as she didn’t ask him to go outside… he figured it was probably okay to let her indulge herself, like that.  So… he closed his eyes, removed his glasses, and let the girl work her magic on his newly-grown hair.
    “Aaand… finished!  Lookie!”
Feeling Kaiya place his glasses back on his nose, Joseph opened his eyes.  When he did, he noticed that she was standing nearby, wearing a big grin, holding some scissors in one hand and a big mirror in the other.  He looked at her… then, he looked at the mirror… only to gasp in surprise!  Kaiya… really had done a number on his new hair!     Normally, the fox only had the three bangs to worry about, all of which he would douse with some super-high-strength hairspray that made them stiff, but still delightfully bouncy.  But, rather than do that, Kaiya had brushed the two larger “spike-bangs” to the right of his face, letting them rest over his eye, somewhat… while one sat to the left, practically down and under his ear.  He also noticed… he had a bit of fringe curled around his face in a chin-length bob… one that matched the rest of the freshly-teased-and-feathered hair that curled around the back of his head and dipped in a curve pointing at his shoulders.
“Well?” Kaiya asked after her boyfriend looked over his new style.  “What do you think?”     “I…  I’m…”     She grinned.  “Yeesss…?”     For a moment, Joseph didn’t know what to say…  But, after looking away, rubbing his cheek, and blushing… he finally told her.     “I’m cute…”     “What?”  Her grin widened.  “I didn’t catch that.”     “I said… I’m cute…” he mumbled for a second time.     “Still didn’t hear ya.”  Kaiya giggled, telling him that she was lying.  “Say, again?”     Finally, Joseph put his hands over his face, shook his head, and groaned…     “I’m… I’m cute!” he said in a normal volume.  “I’m really cute…!  Like…”     He removed his hands, then, before looking at Kaiya with a surprised expression.     “I’m so cute, I’d date me!  I’d… I’d kiss me…!  Holy smokes, Kaiya…”     His blush brightened, much to her amusement, as he admitted…     “I’m… I’m hot…!  You really did make me h-hot…!  I’m… so conflicted…”     “You have a really cute face, sure…  But…!”  She wiggled a bit more before saying, “You’re not ‘hot…’ yet.”     “‘Yet?’” he repeated.  And, without a word more, Kaiya pulled him off the toilet and dragged him away, leading him into… her room!
“K-Kaiya…?” he nervously asked as she closed and leaned on the door, her face alight with mischief and her tail rapidly brushing against the wood grain.  “Wh-what are–”     He squeaked, then!  Kaiya had leaped at him and, without any warning or explanation at all… started undressing him!     “Kaiya, wait!” he protested as his shirt flew off.  “Kaiya, no!”     But, as she yanked his pants down, he suddenly noticed something about himself that… he was baffled that he hadn’t noticed, sooner – something that made him go completely rigid…
“Joe?”     Kaiya had stood back up and looked at him with a concerned expression.     “What’s wrong, hun?”     “Kaaaiyaaa…?” he squeaked in a voice that was filled with befuddlement.     “Y… yeah?”     “What… are these…?”     She tilted her head as he reached to his chest… then, placed his hands on the pair of round things that were sticking out and hanging there, covered in fur and looking largely out-of-place.  At least, he thought they did…     “Those?” she asked, offering a slight grin.  “Those are boobs, hun!”     “O-okay… a-and…”  He blushed, letting them bounce a little as he let go.  “W-why… are they on me?”     “Because, you’re a girl?” she giggled.     “I… no!  No, I most certainly am not!”     He yelped, then, as Kaiya spontaneously put a hand between his legs.     “Mmm… nope!” she said as she patted around.  “Nothin’ down here… and, you’ve got these, up here!  I’d say you’re pretty-much all-girl!”     She reached up and pointed at “his” chest, then.     “They look lovely, by the way…  Your boobs, I mean.  Hee hee.”     And, just like that… Joseph… ine… wrapped her tail around her waist and crossed her arms over her chest, apparently feeling very self-conscious.
“Aww, Jo… c’mon, now.”     “Don’t you ‘c’mon,’ me!” the newly-formed vixen half-shouted, sounding angry as she hid her body and turned away from her girlfriend.  “I didn’t ask for this!  How… how did this even happen?!”     “Weeell… remember that li’l vial of stuff I made you swallow?”     Her ears perked and her fur bristled.  She was about to answer… when she felt something poke her back.     “Hey, I didn’t know you had spots…” the bunny-girl commented as she poked each-and-every-one of the chocolate-colored fur marks on her “girlfriend’s” back.  “Cute!”
“Kaiya…!”     Kaiya winced and jerked back, blinking as Josephine spun around.  Her face was bright red and she looked frustrated enough to cry.     “I didn’t… I never… I don’t…”     Her face scrunched and she closed her eyes, giving a whimper.     “Th-this isn’t riiight…!”     “Hey… hey, shh-shh-shh-shh…”     She whimpered a little more as she felt a hand touch her cheek.  She didn’t bother looking at her girlfriend, though…  She was far too upset.     “Jo, it’s okay…  It’s not forever.”     Josephine peeked an eye open to notice… Kaiya was smiling at him.     “I just wanted to do something fun with you… something no one’s ever let me do,” she said in a compassionate voice.  “I know it’s probably scary and kinda weird… but, I’d never-ever do anything to hurt you or anything that made you uncomfortable.  You know that, right?”     “Do I?!” the vixen half-spat with a growl.  “‘cause… I’m feeling pretty darn uncomfortable, right now…!”     “I can tell!” Kaiya chuckled.  She brought her other hand up, cupping the vixen’s face before leaning in and pressing their foreheads together.  “But, look…  It’s not forever.  Really!  I just… I always wanted a pretty girl to play with.  For a while!”     “But… you have you…” Josephine murmured, her eyes looking away.     “I look at me every day, hun.  But…”     The bunny gave her a gentle kiss on the lips.     “I don’t get to see a sexy, gold fox every day.  And, I sure don’t get to have one, all to myself… one that lets me style their hair… or, lets me dress them up, all pretty…?”     Josephine’s fur bristled, again.  When she looked Kaiya’s way, she noticed… the girl was nibbling on her bottom lip, again, and giving big, hopeful eyes.  Once again… she felt very conflicted…
On the one hand, Kaiya had been alarmingly forceful, since getting her alone.  The bunny had claimed her lap as a seat, forced her into two very deep kisses – during one of which she’d, apparently, been drugged…  She’d been pulled around, convinced into letting her hair be styled, pulled around further, stripped down to her boxer shorts… had hands put all over her body, and… to top it all off… it seemed like the person who’d done all of that just assumed that she would be perfectly fine with it!     By all rights, Josephine should have just told her off and walked out the door.  But…     “O… okay…”     “‘Okay?’” Kaiya asked, her face lighting up and tail wagging.     “Yeah,” Josephine said with a nod.  “‘Okay.’”     For some dumb reason that she couldn’t quite explain… seeing Kaiya’s brilliant smile and eyes sparkle with excitement was worth whatever embarrassing and potentially-painful situations the hyperactive bunny-girl could put her through.  Not that she expected pain.  Actually, after seeing what a fantastic job the girl did on her hair… she kind of… well… excited, in a way.  Mostly, though, she was just curious about the “dress you up pretty” comment.     Who knows… she thought as she watched Kaiya get into her closet.  It could be fun…
Before Kaiya started in, she offered the vixen… who had become relaxed enough to forget herself… a choice of bras.  Josephine was quick to pick a black one and slip it on… though, when she tried to fasten the hooks in the back, she drew a snorting giggle from her girlfriend.     “If you can’t even hook your own bra, hun…” Kaiya said as she helped the vixen with the fastens, “you’re gonna have real trouble unhooking mine!”     “I–”  She blinked, then, before blushing.  “What.”     Again, all the bunny would give was another giggle-snort, leaving the vixen confused…
Once the bra situation was sorted, Kaiya withdrew several individual articles of clothing from her closet and dresser drawers – all of which seemed to go with every other one, in some way.  It wasn’t long before the vixen decided on a combination to wear for Kaiya…
The first outfit that Josephine tried on were a pair of ripped-up, hip-hugging, stone-washed jeans and a somewhat-baggy, gray T-shirt with loose, flowy sleeves that came to her wrists, as well as a pair of black sneakers with thick, white soles.  The vixen posed for herself in a full-length mirror in the corner…  She thought she looked pretty nice.     “What… do you think, K-Kaiya?” she asked as she looked the bunny’s way.     Kaiya was fondly smiling and staring with adoring eyes, her long tail wagging behind.  That was about all the vixen needed to see to put a bright smile on her own face.
The next outfit the vixen slipped into was a little more “girly…”  The top looked like a form-fitting dress made of one piece of black fabric with wrist-length sleeves, a wide neckline, and a flowing skirt that came down just below her hips.  The material was also fairly stretchy, so even with it squeezing her middle, she had no problem fitting into it.  When it came time to wear the matching, calf-length leggings, though…     “I… can’t slide these over my shorts.”     “So… take ‘em off?”     The vixen blinked, giving a slight blush.  Kaiya was still looking at her with a wiggling tail… but, her smile had become a somewhat playful grin.     “I… I’m not s-sure–”     But, before she could object… Kaiya had shoved some black, cotton panties into her hands, as well as a pair of cloth ballet flats, and pushed her into the closet.     “Better?” she said in a teasing voice, calling from the other side.     “I…  Y-yeah?”  Josephine seemed unsure.  “H-hey…  Are you sure this is okay?”     “They’re clean!” the bunny told her with a laugh.  “Put ‘em on!”     After a long delay, the vixen finally told her… “O-okay…”
About two minutes passed as Kaiya impatiently waited for the vixen to return.  When Josephine did, she wiggled and smiled, full of curiosity and joy.     “I really like how the dress-and-leggings work on your bod!” she told the fox who was comfortably wearing the leggings, as well as the shoes, then.  “You look so cute!”     She appreciated the compliments… but, she was distracted by the fact that she was wearing her girlfriend’s panties – which, she had to admit, were surprisingly comfortable!     “Go look!”     When Kaiya ushered the blushing vixen toward the mirror, though, she welcomed the distraction with open arms.
“Kaiya…?”     “Yeah…?”     “I… really do look cute…” she admitted as she posed.  “Really cute!”     “Hang– hang on.  I’ve got something else, for you!”     Josephine tilted her head.  Kaiya had gotten into the closet and retrieved another item…     “What’s– oh!”     It was a large, light-blue muffler.  One that the bunny had no problem slipping around her neck.  She let it drape off of her shoulders, then, admiring the accessory in the mirror with curious eyes.     “There!”  The rabbit giggled as she said, “Pretty as a picture!”     “I mean… sure?  I suppo–”     She blinked, then.  Something had made a “snapping” noise, behind her.     “Kaiya…?” she asked, turning around.  When she saw the girl holding a camera, though, she blushed… looked to one side… then politely asked, “Can… can I have a copy…?”     Kaiya completely lost it, then, laughing, snorting, and stumbling against the bed.     “Wh-what…?!  I’m… I’m cute…” the vixen shyly said, rubbing one arm with a smile.     “You are so cute, Jo…  Gods, I wish I was as cute as you!”     Josephine heavily blushed… but, she brightly smiled… which made Kaiya smile just as much.  The bunny was good at making her feel comfortable about herself.  In fact… with all the nice, positive reinforcement, she was kind of starting to get used to her new body – something that she hadn’t expected, at all.  She’d even forgotten that she’d been so upset about the change, to begin with… and, with Kaiya’s bright cheers and high priase… she was kind of having fun!
Three more outfits were put on and removed, after the pause: a cute hoodie with baggy slacks and high-tops… a three-piece outfit with a cottony, long-sleeved top and opaque leggings under a semi-transparent skirt… and, Kaiya’s own tank-top, loose, wide-legged jeans, and blue sneakers – the lattermost of which made the girl hug her “girlfriend” tight and while commenting on the slight pudge she had around the waist… something she pouted about, to the rabbit’s continued amusement.     Like before, Kaiya had taken pictures of the vixen in those outfits, asking the comfortable girl to pose for her.  She’d also asked Josephine to put the first outfit back on, just so she could have a picture of that one.  Once all those outfits were exhausted, a playful grin came across the bunny’s face, again…
“Here!  Put this on!”     Josephine blinked, staring at what she’d just been given.  At first, she thought Kaiya was joking and that she’d been handed a simple, red handkerchief.  However, a second look revealed that the bunny had suggested…     “A… two-piece bathing suit?”     “Uh-huh…!”  Kaiya’s eyes sparkled and her tail brushed against the bed as she said, “I wanna see you in it…!”     “I…”  Josephine blushed… but, she smiled and gave a nod.  “O-okay.”     And, without any hesitation… she stripped out of Kaiya’s clothes and folded them up before taking a step toward the closet…     “Where are you going?”     Only to be stopped by a tug on her tail.
“I’m… gonna change into this bikini thing?” the vixen told her girlfriend as she looked back.  “I don’t think it’d have the same effect, if I wore it with underwear, so…”     “Why not… change out here…?”     “Huh?”     Josephine’s face brightened, again…  Kaiya was giving her another funny look…     “It’s just us girls, Jo!” she said with a giggle.  “I don’t mind!”     “W… well, I…”     “C’mooon…”  She squeezed the nervous vixen from behind as she told her, “Let me see what you’ve been hiding…!”     A nibble on the ear told Josephine that any answer other than “Yes” wasn’t going to cut it…  And… she was right.  It was just them.  So…     “Oh…?”
Kaiya stepped back.  Her “girlfriend” had leaned forward and hooked her thumbs into the waistband of her black panties.  She watched in silent awe as the girl tugged them down… then, she had to giggle a little as she watched the vixen fumble with the bra, again.     “Need help, hun?”     “N-no, no… I’m alright…” she said as she slowly managed the hooks and slipped the protective garment off.     “Not bad, for your second try…” Kaiya commented with a grin.  “Now… tuuurn around.”     Josephine took a deep breath… then, without covering herself, she did as instructed.     “K-Kaiya, no!”     Only to whip her tail over herself a split-second too late.  Kaiya hadn’t just seen her bare body…  She’d gotten a picture of it, too!
“Y-y-you tricked me!” the vixen cried while the bunny laughed.  “That’s mean…!”     “But, Jo!” Kaiya said as she walked over, camera in-hand.  “Look at how cute you are!”     Josephine narrowed her eyes… but, she looked at the picture on the view-screen… only to blush, again.  She hadn’t been trying to… but, somehow, she’d put herself in a shy sort of “Here I am” pose… which both accentuated her modest curves and showed how cute she really could be, if she tried.
“I…”  She hesitated before saying, “We should probably delete that one.”     “You can’t fool me,” Kaiya said as she brushed the fox’s fluffy, flushed cheek with the back of one hand.  “You think you’re sexy…”     Josephine twitched… but, she didn’t responsd.  She didn’t need to.  Her tail… which was swaying with excitement… had given her away.     “It’s okay…”  The bun leaned in, kissing her “girlfriend” on the cheek.  “I think you’re sexy, too.  Super-sexy…”     The vixen blushed fairly hard… but, again… the genuine smile on her girlfriend’s face was contagious and, before long… she felt like smiling, too.     “Now, let’s get you into some sexy swim-wear!”     “O-okay…!”
The final dress-up session was a little odd, for Josephine…  Without really suggesting it, Kaiya had decided to help the vixen dress.  So, while she slipped the bikini bottom in-place and set to work on tying the sides nice-and-tight over the girl’s curvy, gold-furred thighs, the vixen held her bikini top in-place while fiddling with the ties in the back.     “You are just so damn cute…” Josephine heard her girlfriend whisper.  She felt a kiss on her middle-back and a pair of hands run along her thighs before hearing Kaiya say, in a low, rumbly sort of voice, “I just wanna eat you up…!”     “Th-th-thanks…?” she nervously said, getting her companion to snort and giggle, again.     “Go look, hun.”     So, she did.
Josephine felt her face warm, again, as her eyes roamed over her freshly-clothed body.  The bright-red fabric on her top clung pretty tightly to the front of her chest and the bottoms, which were cut much lower than she thought, seemed to fit just as snug against her body as the top.  Overall, it left very little to the imagination… but, at the same time… it was attractive enough to make her feel like posing.  And, when she did…     Click.     She heard the shutter sound effect of Kaiya’s digital camera, again.     Zip!     Followed by the sound of fabric rubbing against fabric…     Flop.     Then, plopping against a carpeted floor, leaving her naked from the waist down.
For several moments, Josephine just stood there, still in her flashy pose, just staring at herself in the mirror.  Kaiya had yanked both tied cords loose from her hips and let the fabric drop… but, for some reason, it didn’t seem like her brain wanted to register that.  In fact, even after she recovered… the only thing she did, other than blush… was smirk.
“Sorry, hun!” Kaiya laughed.  “I couldn’t help myself!”     “Ya know, I’m not even bothered.”     “Oh?”  The bunny grinned, rubbing her eye.  She’d been laughing so much, she’d knocked loose some joyful tears, apparently.  “Why’s that?”     “I think I kind of expected it,” Josephine said as she turned around, wagging her tail without bothering to cover herself.  “You’re a trouble-maker, Kaiya.”     “Thaaat’s me!” she giggled.     “You know what troublemakers get?”     The bunny-girl blinked her dull, sky-colored eyes.  “What?”     “This.”     And, without any further warning… Josephine leaped at her!  However…     “Yeek!”     Kaiya was a little too agile to be caught like that.  But…     “H– hey…!”     There were other ways to catch a bunny-cat.  Like… by the tail.
Kaiya squirmed and giggled, wiggling and laughing as her “girlfriend” pulled her in, deciding to snuggle, cuddle, and nuzzle with her from behind.  She didn’t seem the least bit shy about nibbling or nipping at the girl’s fur, either… which changed her giggles into little pants.  But, only after a moment of doing that, Josephine calmed down and tightly held her, purring and wagging her tail while she let the bunny relax…
“You’re so much fun, Jo…” the cooed with a purr of her own.  “Thanks.  And… sorry.”     “What for?” she asked, giving a gentle nuzzle to the bunny’s cheek.     “Thanks-and-sorry… for all this,” Kaiya sighed.  “I just… didn’t give it any thought.”     “No need to apologize, Kaiya.”  She kissed the girl’s cheek before telling her, “I was a little upset… kind of confused, in fact… but, after we started playing ‘dress-up…’ and, especially after all the nice things you told me… I wasn’t upset, anymore.  And… I think you’re right.”     Kaiya quietly giggled as she was nipped on the shoulder, again.     “I think I am pretty cute…  I kind of like this body.  And, I’m glad you do, too…”     There was a little pause in the conversation, then.  Though Josephine couldn’t see it… Kaiya was biting her lower lip, again.     “Say, Jo…” she softly said, getting her attention.  “There’s… one more outfit that I’ve been saving for a… special occasion.  I-it’s nothing special… but…”     She turned around, looking into her friend’s eyes with hope.     “I think you’d look absolutely amazing in it…”     Josephine blinked her golden eyes.  Kaiya… was blushing.  Whatever the outfit was… it seemed like the girl absolutely had her heart set on it.  Luckily…     “Let’s try it on.”     She had no intention of disappointing her.
Kaiya practically squealed before wriggling out of Josephine’s arms and bounding over to the closet in excitement.  It took her several moments of searching… but, after finally finding everything she was looking for…     “W… whoa.”     She returned, holding a number of items in her arms… one of which had gotten the vixen’s full attention.
After a long session of sliding things up, on, and over curves and limbs… adjusting seams and straightening things out… Josephine stood there, staring at the mirror and admiring herself…  She was wearing an elegant, black, floor-length dress… and all the things that went with it, visible or otherwise.  However… having put on every bit of the outfit… was almost too much for the girl to handle.     Between having balance issues in the stiletto heels, feeling the cool, silk garments on her lower-half, and worrying about tearing Kaiya’s stockings with her plush fur… she was feeling a little awkward.  Doubly-so, with Kaiya clinging to her like she was, playing with the back of her skirt and trying to get peeks underneath.  It was weird… really weird… seeing her act like that.  She didn’t even feel flattered, anymore…  Kaiya was just plain freaking her out.
“Gods, you are so sexy, right now, Jo…”     She tensed, then.  Was Kaiya… grinding against her…?! –––––
“Magnus?”     “Here,” the near-black wolf in the third row called at the start of his class.     “Oppenheimer?”     “Yo,” another student called.     “Paradalis?”     There was a pause.  No one had answered.     “Paradalis?  Miss Kaiya Paradalis?”     Again, no answer.  A glance toward her usual desk revealed… a severe lack of presence.     “Hmmm…”  The teacher made a mark on their clipboard before calling, “Polk?”     “Present.”     Class came-and-went in a hurry.  As usual, one student stayed behind to do homework.  And, as usual… he was interrupted by someone calling his name.  However… the voice that had called sounded a bit different than normal.  As he looked up, though… he didn’t even bat an eye.
“Hello, Kaiya,” he greeted before returning to his work.  “The potion worked, I see.”     He blinked, then, as a pair of dark-spotted hands slammed down on his desk.     “Carlos, you jerk…!” the voice growled.  “You didn’t tell me this was permanent!”     “You didn’t ask,” he said with a smirk, not looking at the figure that stood over him.     “I need a fix!  I can’t finish the school year like this…!”     Carlos took a moment to examine the light-gray rabbit with the long tail.
The green hoodie, blue jeans, and trucker hat they wore did little to hide Kaiya’s identity, the feminine face and long hair being dead give-aways.  However… even with the baggy clothes, there was a lack of curves on the bunny’s body around the hips, waist, and especially the chest.     “I think it’s an improvement,” he commented, still smirking.  “Less of a distraction.”     “I–”  Kaiya paused and blinked.  “Did you just–?  N-never mind.  Fix this!  Now!”     “You’re a smart boy, Kaiya,” he said with a grin.  “Fix it, yourself.”     As he turned back to his homework, the other male went wide-eyed.     “You–!  I…!  F… fine, then…!  Stupid… jerk…!”     He spun on his heel and started stomping away…     “Three… two… one…”     Before coming right back and begging for help.  Just like Carlos predicted.
“Phew…  It’s good to be me, again!”
In exchange for an undisclosed favor at an undisclosed time, Carlos actually did help Kaiya “regain her womanhood” – a phrasing he took personally…  He even helped her make a second dose of the reversal brew, though he didn’t care to ask what it was for.     “You’re a trouble-maker, Kaiya,” he said to the rabbit-girl.     “I know,” she said with a smile.  “Thanks, for your help, ‘teach!’”     He smiled, as well… then, he gave a soft nod as she waved and headed out.
“Man, Joe’s gonna be happy to see this…!” she beamed, juggling the vial of clear liquid.  “I wonder if… she… went to school today?”     The girl grinned, thinking of the commotion that could have caused.     “Poooor Joe!” she giggled… then, she sighed.  “I… hope he forgives me…”

(ARTICLE) 180926 K-Pop Star Kai of EXO Reveals New Mullet at Gucci's Spring/Summer 2019 Show
Tumblr media
This is the first mullet I've ever liked.
K-pop's mullet club just gained a new member. After being spotted out and about over the past week with a new hairstyle, Kai officially debuted his mullet-meets-undercut on Monday. The EXO member's latest look was on full display while he attended the Gucci Spring/Summer 2019 runway show in Paris.
Unlike the mullets of the 1980s and 1990s à la Rod Stewart and Billy Ray Cyrus, Kai gave the controversial cut a 2018 twist by shaving the sides of his head. Adding an undercut to the look helps keep the mullet from looking voluminous and retro — without sacrificing the business-in-the-front-party-in-the-back aesthetic. Not only is this a good element to keep in mind if you've been considering a mullet for fall, but it also makes me like them. (Yes, this is the first time I've ever respected a K-pop star's choice to have a mullet. What a momentous occasion.)
The dancer also lightened up his hair to a warm honey blonde shade to go along with his new cut. He even coordinated his makeup with it, too, with a bronzey shadow on his lids.
September has been filled with EXO hair transformations. Chanyeol kicked it off by bleaching his hair, and Sehun colored his a rusty red — just to name a few. Kai, however, is the only member so far to undergo a major hairstyle change. This is also the second time he's showed up to a Gucci show with an experimental hair look. In May, he slipped on a bejeweled veil-like headband for the label's cruise 2019 collection. Maybe he'll dye his hair neon for next season's show.
