hi! i've seen the post about how shadow and bone is no rep for slavic/russian culture and was wandering how could it have been better in u're opinion? only if you feel like talking about it tho, no pressure or anything
I'm no expert on Russian culture, so I'll add some more general Slavic stuff:
NAMES- The only Morozova introduced is Baghra. Both Sasha and Ilya's surname should be Morozov. Patronymics would be a sweet bonus: Aleksander Ilyich Morozov, Alina ? Starkova, Evgenia "Genya" ? Safina, Zoya Suhm?ovna? Nazyalenskaya, Nikolai "Kolya" Aleksandrovich Lantsov... Malyen would be bullied SO badly! Мальен-малeнький! He’d be “tiny” as a “so grown up” child, he’d be “tiny” in different way as an adult...
Stereotypes shouldn’t be used merely as set pieces. If you want Grisha play balalaika, make it some side character's hobby. Not a thing you mention once to get some Russian points.
Apparently, you can't get drunk from kvas, and there is champagne in Grishaverse, so why not make vodka soldiers' best friend? Why not make it a widely overlooked problem- the army is poorly supplied, and soldiers' prospects are bleak. If you want Ravkans to be a nation of drunks, give me a reason why are they like that.
Stay consistent. Either there is a Tsar, or a King. You can't have both, OR you can have the same person with more titles, bound to different territories, but it should be established as such (for example: In Austria-Hungary, Hapsburg emperor could either be crowned the king of Bohemia, or he could just rule it as an emperor of the realm Bohemia was a part of...).
More culture, traditions, holidays...
Plenty of topics touched upon and ignored almost immediately. Serfs, child marriage, sexism so deeply rooted a wife is basically a slave, it's weird for a woman to stay unmarried and/or run a business of her own, yet women can serve in the army...
Religion. First it’s just uneducated peasants’ pastime, then it’s a world-changing force without any character doing anything to make it so, or shoulder the responsibility. Is there a God? Who establishes the Saints? What’s the structure of Ravkan church? Its relationship to other religions? Why was Alina a living Saint without moving a finger? Why are we supposed to believe Nina yelling “Sankta Leoni” persuades a whole town of people it’s the Truth™? The whole religious theme is handled very badly, not that there were no interesting ideas. It’s obviously meant to be some form of Orthodox Church with the Apparat as some creepy Pope/Patriarch/Ra-Ra-Rasputin combo, but it doesn’t make much sense...
Pretty, pretty Slavic clothes. Reds and embroidery, lace, flowers, white shirts, studs, high boots, vests, scarfs, aprons, muffs in winter, weapons as a part of an outfit- sabres, kinzhals, daggers, long light axes... hairdos- braids thrown over one's shouldes, made into crown around one's head, ribbons in hair...
Food, not just one stupid fucking fish! Pirozhki baked or fried, borsch, shchi, bazilion versions of dumplings, honey cake, mead, roasted goose or duck, sauces, gulash, lecho, I’m getting into Czech cuisine here- buchty, koláče, kyselo, kuba... Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Like I said, I'm no expert, there's just so much SO wrong, even I notice.
Feel free to add more.

The Red Meat
Pork is hog meat harvested between the ages of six months and one year. The finest pork is grayish pink in color, firm and finely grained, well-marbled, and covered on the outside with a layer of firm white fat. Approximately 30% of the flesh is consumed as cooked fresh meat, while the remainder is cured or smoked for bacon and ham, used in sausage, and rendered to produce lard. Because pigs can contract the parasitic disease trichinosis, pork must be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 °F (71 °C) to destroy the disease-causing organism.
The amount of edible flesh produced by pork carcasses is assessed. In the United States, where specific cuts are not evaluated, a U.S. Number 1 carcass has the best fat-to-lean ratio; Numbers 2, 3, and 4 have a higher proportion of fat, reducing the amount of lean. Utility-grade pork, which is sometimes obtained from older animals, has bad fat and is less firm. The most popular pig parts are hams, spareribs, loin roasts and chops, bellies, picnic shoulders, and shoulder butts.
Pork is a versatile meat that is consumed all around the world. Pork, on the other hand, is virtually non-existent in the cuisines of the Middle East and several indigenous civilizations in Asia and Africa since it is prohibited by Judaism and Islam's dietary rules. The top four pork-consuming countries are Germany, Denmark, Poland, and Austria (in terms of per capita consumption).
Tumblr media
Spareribs are fresh swine loin, leg, and rib sections that are commonly roasted in Western cooking. Grilled or pan-fried loin and rib chops are popular preparations. A spit-roasted whole newborn piglet, or suckling pig, is a delicacy in Central and Eastern Europe; wild pigs have traditionally been prepared in the same way around the Pacific. Less desirable parts of the carcass, such as ears, tails, hocks, feet, and brains, as well as the fatty portions of the back of the carcass (fatback), may be cooked with various greens, especially in the southern United States; despite its origins in the economic necessity, this distinct style of pork cookery has an important place in American regional cuisine. Nutritional Information and Health Benefits
It is the most often consumed red meat in the world, notably in Eastern Asia, yet it is forbidden in other religions, like Islam and Judaism.
As a result, pork is forbidden in many Islamic countries.
It is most usually consumed raw, but cured (preserved) pig products are also popular. Examples include smoked pork, ham, bacon, and sausages.
Lean pork is abundant in protein, vitamins, and minerals, making it an excellent addition to a healthy diet.
Tumblr media
Pork protein
Pork, like other meats, is mostly protein.
Lean, cooked pork has a protein level of about 26% by fresh weight.
When dried, lean pork contains a protein content of up to 89 percent, making it one of the most protein-rich meals (1Trusted Source).
It contains all nine essential amino acids needed for your body's growth and upkeep. Beef is one of the most complete protein sources.
As a consequence, eating pig — or other types of pork — may be especially beneficial for bodybuilders, recovering athletes, those recovering from surgery, and anybody who wants to create or mend muscles
Pig fat
Pig fat content varies.
Pork fat percentage is normally 10-16% (2), although it can be significantly higher depending on the level of trimming and other variables.
Clarified pig fat, often known as lard, is used in cooking on occasion.
Pork, like other types of red meat, is largely made up of saturated and unsaturated fats in roughly equal amounts.
A cooked, ground pork 3.5-ounce (100-gram) meal, for example, has 7.7 grams of saturated fat, 9.3 grams of monounsaturated fat, and 1.9 grams of polyunsaturated fat (1Trusted Source).
Pork flesh has a different fatty acid composition than ruminant meats like beef and lamb.

This is a fun ask! And in fiction anything could happen. But did you know that tomatoes, much like potatoes, came to Europe from the New World in the 16th Century? Even though German cuisine is associated with potatoes, it was a much recent addition. Sadly this means that Romans and Medieval peoples couldn't eat cheeseburgers and our potato-girl Sasha wouldn't even know potatoes existed in the quasi-medieval Paradis. The Huns and their distant "cousins" the Mongols ate, however, a type of meat that could be called the great-great-great-grandfather of the steak tartatare.
Europeans had almost no sweets and relied on honey and dried fruits. Granulated sugar also came from the New World, from slave labour in Brazil and the Antilles in the Caribbean. They also didn't have coffee. I don't quite remember now if coffee originated from Ethiopia or the Arabian peninsula, but it was through Arabian commerce that it reached modern day Turkey who, in turn, sold it to France in the 18th Century, it's military ally in an alliance that resulted in many headaches for the Pope and the Habsburg Dynasty-ruled Spain and Austria. Anyways, coffee wouldn't become a daily thing on people's tables until the Portuguese biopirated it to grow its seeds in Brazil, who then became the world's largest producer in the 19th century.
But what a sad reality, don't you think? You're a peasant and you live mostly on grain and game. You'd spend your entire life without tasting a tomato, a potato or even drinking coffee. Also no spices and no sugar and bad quality tea. And when you think about it in these terms, it was the spice trade that made Europe start to conquer the world!
brooo i know potatoes and tomatoes are from my homeland!! and coffee is from Ethiopia if i remember right tho but yeah so many things that we perceive as common food actually came from other places distant from Europe. im a peasant from the new world tho so i’m eating good lol 😭😭🤣🤣🤣 no but yeah i get what you mean. worse of it was when the production method wasn’t applied yet. you know the rotation or right after wars who suffered at the end were peasants that didn’t have much to begin with but now got nothing. being born in a good status was a blessing for life for sure. 😮‍💨

Hetalia Matchup: England
Warnings: Fluff.
@oneofmanyinterests Request: Hello! If you're doing match ups, I'd love to be matched romantically with a Hetalia guy~
As I believe personality and interests matter much more than looks, I'll omit them, if that's alright.
Thank you~
I enjoy being artistic very much. My skills include drawing, painting, embroidery, crochet, cooking and baking, and even some sewing. I love traditional and historical Chinese clothing and art; it's one of my very favourite. When I cook, I feel like I'm in my own world, and I enjoy making food from multiple cultures. I can even fold wontons and braid dough for bread.
I've been referred to as a "little old lady" since forever. My family says I've been more mature than my age would suggest, and my friends came to me for advice and wisdom.
I'm a loner who enjoys listening to music from all over the world. Rain is my favourite weather, and tea and my cats are perfect companions for such days. I love the colours and the cool, crisp air of autumn. Much peace and tranquility is found within the moon for me. Night is the best time.
I rarely ever get angry and I can be very patient. Many have told me that they feel comfortable and calm when I'm around. Irritation does come around, but that's mainly due to loud people or not feeling well.
This isn't related to my personality, but I've dealt with depression and anxiety for many years, along with often crippling migraines.
.
.
.
After reviewing the information given, I think that you best pair well with England!
First of all, England appreciates that you believe that personality and interests matter more than looks. He takes pride in his appearances and often dresses and styles himself as the perfect gentleman. He won’t mention it, but he knows that there are certain qualities to his features that may hinder others from pursuing him romantically. That said, he also appreciates how you look and tells you that no matter what, you are as lovely and as radiant as a freshly plucked rose.
England is instantly enamored when he realizes that you are very artistic. He may not be as inclined as art as other Nations like the Italy brothers, Austria, or Japan, but he knows his way around needles and thread, thank you very much.
Whenever it rains or the both of you don’t have plans that are set in stone, England would love to sit with you, knitting together. Seeking out domesticity had always been at the back of his mind, but now that he has you in his life, he’ll make sure that these weekly embroidery/crocheting sessions always happen.
England will show off his skills, give you tips on how to create life in your projects, and he’ll give you some of his pieces for you to wear or show off. Please compliment him! He may not show it all the time, but it would absolutely melt his heart if you acknowledge his hard work.
Once the both of you get to know each other better and if England spills the beans about his existence as the immortal representation of his homeland, he might take you on work trips around the world! You’ll get the chance to get private cooking lessons with various Nations and try out the local cuisines. Furthermore, once he realizes that you’re enamored with Chinese traditions and culture, in regards to their clothing and art, he’ll even make an appointment with China himself. (Please don’t look too enthused about this, though. England can get a little jealous and will feel inadequate when compared to a cultural behemoth and mainstay like China).
Please cook for England! He loves international cuisine and knowing that he can get such high quality food in the comfort of his home because of your talent makes him all the more likely to savor your cooking. He has his own skills and spins on the foods that he enjoys, so be sure to indulge him!
England might tease you a little for being such a little old lady, but he means well at the end of the day. If you object to such a name, he will immediately stop and apologize. If you happen to adore this little nickname, he’ll tease you over and over again because he finds it ironic that he’s centuries older than you, but he’s seemingly younger than what he seems to be. He’ll encourage you to live life to the fullest and that you should remember that your youth is something that must be treasured. Do enjoy yourself won’t you? He doesn’t want you to waste your life not having fun.
Rain is your favorite type of weather? Well, what do you know, you’re in England! His weather has always been a sore spot, especially when Nations from warmer climates come to his country for international conferences. It’s not always rainy! However, when he sees you look so content and at ease with his weather, he finds himself relaxing. He’ll brew a fresh pot of tea (always your favorite flavor during times such as these), and he’ll make sure that his cat is nestled close to you in case you want the warmth. Again, there’s the air of domesticity that he craves and he’s thankful to whatever god is out there that you’re in his life.
England would like to think that he’s calm and rational thinking, but that is far from the case. He’s a firebrand at best and an absolute petty menace at worst. When you come into his life, he finds himself soothing his anger more often than not and dulling the acidity of his irritation so that he isn’t as much of a prat as usual. (Don’t worry, he’s still a prat when it comes to his coworkers, but when it comes to you, he’s a perfect gentleman).
Whenever he’s feeling particularly incensed, he’ll seek you out. If the both of you are comfortable with it, England will either drape himself over your shoulders, nuzzle into your stomach while you’re seated, or hug you close to him. He can’t stop himself, your very presence is so soothing and it chases most of his worries away!
Finally, England has had bouts with depression and anxiety. He’s always felt like he had to measure and compete with other Nations, especially since he used to be the black sheep of Europe. Nowadays, he isn’t as inclined to feel as inadequate (he has long since been comfortable with his position once he was no longer the world’s greatest empire), but he still has tips from way back when that can help you. He’ll brew you the most calming of teas, teach you breathing exercises, and hold you close if the world ever becomes too much for you.
All in all, you’re in good hands with England! The romance between the two of you is filled with sweet and tender love, one that is always subtle, but warm and comforting to feel.

The Alps are a vast and iconic mountain range in Europe, stretching approximately 750 miles across eight countries: France, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. They are known for their stunning natural beauty, comprising towering peaks, deep valleys, glaciers, and picturesque lakes. The highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc, standing at 4,809 meters above sea level. The region has a rich cultural heritage, with diverse languages, traditions, and cuisines influenced by the various communities that have inhabited the area throughout history. The Alps are a popular destination for outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, mountaineering, and paragliding, attracting millions of tourists each year. Additionally, the Alps play a crucial role in regulating Europe's climate and water resources, as well as providing habitats for many plant and animal species.
Tumblr media
I find the alps to be incredibly stunning and fascinating, they were a real driving force in the decision to use a mountainous terrain for my first world. I wish I could've captured the real beauty of the alps but it would be incredibly challenging to do so as well as time consuming.

Schnitzel, a popular dish made with thinly pounded meat that is coated in breading and fried, has long been a staple in many cultures and cuisines. However, recent criticism has arisen regarding its potential role in perpetuating misogyny among immortal beings.
What exactly makes schnitzel manipulative for misogyny among immortals? It all comes down to the tradition and culture surrounding this dish.
Firstly, schnitzel is often associated with traditional gender roles, where it is seen as a hearty, "manly" meal. This reinforces the stereotype that meat-based dishes are meant for men, while lighter or vegetarian options are more "feminine." This can lead to immortals, who have been alive for centuries, continuing to perpetuate these outdated gender norms.
Additionally, the preparation and serving of schnitzel can also be seen as manipulative for misogyny. In traditional cultures, men are often the ones who are responsible for cooking and serving the meal, while women are expected to take care of the domestic duties. This perpetuates the idea that men are the dominant figure in the household and that their value lies in their ability to provide food for their family, while women are relegated to the role of caretaker.
Moreover, the act of using a hammer to pound the meat into thin slices for schnitzel can also be seen as a symbol of violence and aggression. This perpetuates the toxic masculinity that is often associated with immortals, who are often depicted as powerful and dominant beings.
Perhaps most concerning is the history of schnitzel in relation to women's rights. Back in the 19th century, when the dish originated in Austria, women were not allowed to work in restaurants. They were only allowed to serve schnitzel, but were not permitted to cook it as it was seen as too physically demanding for women. This unequal treatment of women in the culinary world reinforces the idea that they are not capable of handling traditionally "masculine" tasks.
In conclusion, while schnitzel may seem like a harmless and tasty dish, its traditional associations and cultural implications can be manipulative for misogyny among immortal beings. It is important for immortals to challenge and break away from these harmful gender norms and recognize the impact that their choices, such as the food they eat, can have on perpetuating misogyny.

Embassy of Canada in the Philippines Holds Savour Nova Scotia Seafood Dinner
Tumblr media
The Embassy of Canada in the Philippines recently held a special four-course dinner featuring specialty seafood and wines from the Province of Nova Scotia. This exclusive by-invitation only event was hosted by none other than the Ambassador of Canada to the Philippines, His Excellency David Hartman, with Canada and the Philippines celebrating 75 years of bilateral diplomatic relations this year.
Tumblr media
The Savour Nova Scotia Seafood Dinner was held at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Canada to the Philippines inside Dasmariñas Village in Makati last February 21, 2024. The Hungry Kat was invited once again by the Embassy to be one of their media guests so I was more than happy to visit and have my first taste of Nova Scotia seafood and cuisine.
Tumblr media
More than 40 guests from the Philippine government, business sector, and the culinary industry attended the special event that brought together suppliers, importers, wine connoisseurs, and food and beverage experts to showcase the many quality products available from Nova Scotia.
Tumblr media
We were happy to see some of our friends from the industry like celebrity chef Sharwin Tee and Trade Commissioner Louise Pasadilla from the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines. I was also excited to see Trade Commissioner Angel Cachuela who I have known for a long time.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Guest were greeted at the start of the evening with a welcome drink called the PhilScotian Sour. This was a specially-curated cocktail made with Nova Scotia's Glenora Distillery 12-Year Single Malt Whiskey, Philippines mangoes, and calamansi. It was quite refreshing and a good start to the evening's festivities. Lobster Canapés with housemade brioche, chives, and caviar were also served.
Tumblr media
I also met the evening's guest of honor. The dinner was organized on the occasion of the visit of Nova Scotia’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Honorable Kent Smith. Nova Scotia is located at the edge of North America and the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean, making its waters cold, clean, and pure. As a result, their seafood catch is always fresh and is of the highest quality.
Tumblr media
The program started with His Excellency David Hartman making his opening remarks and welcoming all the guests to the Savour Nova Scotia Seafood Dinner. “Tonight’s dinner symbolizes the strong people-to-people ties that bind our countries together and the great things we can accomplish when we work together. There is a growing population of Filipinos living in Nova Scotia, and we are so proud to know that this vibrant community is thriving in beautiful Nova Scotia and across the country," said Ambassador Hartman.
Tumblr media
The Honorable Kent Smith also took to the stage for his remarks. “Nova Scotia seafood has earned a global reputation for freshness, quality, and great taste. We were pleased to share our premium-quality products during the recent Asia mission. This was also an opportunity to celebrate the relationship between Canada and the Philippines and for Nova Scotia companies to build on these existing ties and explore new opportunities in the global market,” said Minster Smith. Nova Scotia is Canada's number one seafood exporter, exporting to over 60 countries. Nova Scotia's dedication to food safety, innovation, and sustainability is driven by a commitment to quality at every step along the value chain.
Tumblr media
Ambassador of the Philippines to Canada Maria Andrelita S. Austria was also present an flew over to the country just for this special event. The dinner also celebrated new milestones between Nova Scotia and the Philippines, including the Province’s Joint Declaration of Intent with the Department of Migrant Workers focusing on the mobility of workers from the Philippines to Nova Scotia and NSCC’s new partnership with World Citi Colleges on healthcare education.
Tumblr media
An array of seafood, wines, and wild blueberries were all flown in from Atlantic Canada and took the spotlight in the exclusive four-course dinner. Bread baskets were placed on the table consisting of malunggay pandesal, mini baguette and grissini plus whipped butter.
Tumblr media
Chef Thomas Carey of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and Chef Joseph Gomez, the Executive Chef of the Embassy of Canada and of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), took turns introducing each course that showcased the quality of Nova Scotia’s seafood. The dinner showcased the special collaboration between NSCC and DLS-CSB that began with the first Philippines-Canada Virtual Culinary Cup in 2021, organized by the Embassy of Canada, Les Toques Blanches Chefs Association in the Philippines, and the World Food Expo organizers. DLS-CSB culinary students helped prepare this special fusion dinner.
Tumblr media
Our first course was the Nova Scotia Whelk and Snow Crab Kombucha Squash Custard. The whelk and snow crab are prepared with spinach, Pernod cream, steamed kombucha squash, custard, and tarragon oil.
Tumblr media
I was not really familiar with whelk and Nova Scotia seafood in general, so it was a good that I was seated with Derrick Kennedy, Sales Director of Louisbourg Seafood Limited and one of the featured supplies during the event. The whelk is actually a big snail, much bigger that the ones served on French escargots, so it was quite a unique experience eating these exotic seafood items.
Tumblr media
Next we had the Seared Fish and Crab Cappellacci. This is made with a pan-seared red ocean perch which is a local Nova Scotia fish. The Jonah crab is also a local crab that is unique to that region. These were cooked with coconut-lemongrass curry, mushroom adobo, and heirloom tomatoes.
Tumblr media
To make the dinner even more captivating, each course was paired with Nova Scotia wines and ciders from Blomidon Wines, Benjamin Bridge, Bulwark Ciders and Lightfoot and Wolfville.
Tumblr media
Our third course is a fusion of Nova Scotia and Filipino ingredients. This beautiful Bay Leaf Poached Lobster Tail sits on top of crispy potato cake made with Benguet potatoes grown from Atlantic Canadian seed potatoes, then doused with rich bearnaise sauce. I just loved the plump and juicy lobster meat which was highlighted further by the bearnaise sauce.
Tumblr media
For our dessert course, we had the Petite Blueberry Charlotte which is a combination of lemon cheesecake, blueberry confiture, ginger chocolate crunch, and burnt butter pecan ice cream. We even got to sample some wild blueberries from Nova Scotia which were used for these sweet desserts.
Tumblr media
We would like to thank the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines, most specially His Excellency David Hartman, for hosting the Savour Nova Scotia Seafood Dinner. The dinner was a great way to discover and experience Nova Scotia seafood and Filipinos really should have more access to their wonderful selection of export-quality products. The next time you visit the supermarket and grocery, check out the imported seafood section and you may find some of the best items there from Nova Scotia.
