The SS Empire #Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks in 1948 carrying passengers from the #Caribbean. Invited by Britain to assist with post-war reconstruction, many of this generation resided in #Brent, becoming part of the fabric of the borough with a lasting legacy. This #WindrushDay take the opportunity to explore some fantastic @brentmuseumandarchives e-collections of widely varying recommended reads as we honour the British Caribbean community and the half a million people who travelled to the UK after the Second World War. Windrush Day
Tumblr media
On the third official Windrush Day, we recognise the half a million people who travelled to the UK after World War II, and celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants to our communities here in the UK.
Our 'Nice Cup of Tea?' display is a collaboration with members of Oxford's African Caribbean and Windrush communities, highlighting hidden stories of empire and slavery behind the tea trade. You can see it on display in Gallery 40.

Since its #WindrushDay I thought I'd reshare these pieces. The text below was penned by @sazisophiri about my work, I couldn't have put it better myself • • • • • • Featured works: 'God Save the Queen' and 'Windrush Scandal' by @thehoneyeffect . . . . 72 years ago the HMT Empire Windrush arrived by Tilbury Docks carrying workers from the Caribbean who were invited as BRITISH subjects to help rebuild Britain post WW2. Upon arrival they were met with hostility, and that hostile continued for many of them facing racism and discrimination, and being denied rights. Nowadays it’s hard to mention the name Windrush without it preceding the word ‘scandal’. It’s painful to think of all those who have suffered in the hands of the British government, with some losing their livelihoods, being taken from everyone they knew and deported to places they were not familiar with. For some of the victims, the stress of this caused health problems which led to the loss of life. A compensation fund has been created but a tiny percentage has been paid. Many still await justice. The artworks featured in the post are by @thehoneyeffect and illustrate some of the struggles that the Windrush generation and the generations after them have had to endure throughout the decades. These works were originally commissioned by @leftlionmagazine for their Windrush special 2 years ago, and the first one is featured on the front cover of Journeys to Nottingham by @nottinghamblackarchive that features a collections of narratives and photographs from people who travelled from the Caribbean to Nottingham during the Windrush era. Copies were being sold at @new_art_exchange. I will place a link in my bio to the drama ‘Sitting in Limbo’ which premiered on the BBC a few weeks ago about one of the victims of the scandal. I’ll also include the link to Nottingham Black Archive’s website and @thehoneyeffect’s Etsy store where you can purchase prints of the work featured in this post. #windrushgeneration #windrushday2020 #blackbritain #blackwomenartists (at Nottingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBv7YkmF_x4/?igshid=1s4ecmm20qeg9

🔸 Poised, elegant and regal - never before seen images depicting black people in Britain prior to 1938 are on display at Rivington Place gallery, as part of the Black Chronicles II exhibition. Kalulu, seen here, is often pictured with explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley as 'his boy'. Here, he holds his own with striking poise. Kalulu (Ndugu M'Hali). After the Second World War, the British government invited thousands of people from the Caribbean over to the UK to help rebuild the country due to labour shortages. On this day 72 years ago the new arrivals, the first of whom were brought over in the HMT Empire Windrush, arrived at Tilbury Docks, Essex. The passengers had been encouraged to come to England in 1948 as members of the Commonwealth under the 1948 British Nationality Act that granted citizenship and right of abode in the UK to all members of the British Empire. Between 1948 and 1973 approximately 550,000 West Indians (15% of the Commonwealth Caribbean population) migrated to the UK for work. In early 2018, after decades living & working in the UK, it emerged that members of the “Windrush Generation” were being threatened with deportation, because they couldn’t provide the documentation to prove how long they had been in the UK. Behind the scenes Caribbean diplomats said they had been asking the Foreign Office to deal with the growing problem of Caribbean born British citizens who were being told they were illegal immigrants for many years. Caribbean born Brits described how they had lost their jobs, their homes, or were detained because of them being classified as illegal immigrants by the authorities. The government was extremely slow to react. As many as 15,000 people were classified as illegal immigrants with 83 cases of wrongful deportation by the Home Office After pressure from Mr Guy Hewitt (the London born High Commissioner for the Carribean) & other Carribean commissioners, Amber Rudd apologised in Parliament & later resigned from her post as the fallout from the scandal continued. Windrush victims were promised compensation from the government although these payouts could be capped under proposals to ensure no individual receives a “disproportionately” high payment from the public funds. Peoples lives were destroyed, families split up, homes, possessions & incomes lost. As of February 2020 £62,198 had been paid out from a Home Office compensation account which was expected to distribute between £200m and £570m. #windrush #windrushday #history #1940s #vintagemenswear #vintagestyle https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvlNr9Dzfk/?igshid=luuc0t49oj4t

windrush Day . My mum was a nurse and she helped rebuild this country (United Kingdom) This was her picture in her passport which we still have it’s stamped indefinite leave, she was smart and got her british passport soon after . But indefinite leave means indefinite leave .... im not saying those who didn’t are silly but they were promised a new life and helped build that dream and are now being victimised..... people say they should be grateful because of Churchill he “allowed” them to be able to settle in Europe .... now years after here’s the question what should be asked ... should they be grateful for the lies? The betrayal from the mothership.... . . . Happy windrush day but I’m not sure happy is the appropriate word . You have to have lived it or affected by it to understand . #windrushday #windrushgeneration #windrushscandal #windrushday2020 #leroydawkins #monkey #magazinecover #empirewindrush #blackpeoplematter #blacklivesmatter #discoverunder5k #discoverunder1k #discoverunder10k #discoverunder2k #milkandhoney #greatbritain #unitedkingdom #england #winstonchurchill (at Windrush) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvi4XvAAHS/?igshid=xu5nse0lcrs7
