Though it’s a bit more nuanced than this, the point stands. The Sons of Liberty - the very founding fathers so enshrined by those who want to silence us now - were not shy about kicking up a ruckus, especially when they found themselves hostage to an occupying force. Those of us immersed in the field of historical study know just how heated the riots in pre-revolutionary colonies could get. And they were riots, complete with hanging effigies and lengthy call-outs in the newspapers. The five men killed in the Boston Massacre became martyrs to the cause and symbolic of the overreach of Royal authority. Seeing what is happening now, one can only hope we have just as much of a watershed moment in our future, where our country will finally live up to its purported values. We all know it was built on white supremacy and lies, but the hope that it could actually live up to the dream of free, equal melting-pot-ness is still a future we need to strive toward. From the Massachusetts State House this Friday where Bostonians came together to drown out right-wing neofascists. #blacklivesmatter #policebrutality #bostonhistory #boston #blm #resistance #protest #protests #nojusticenopeace #whitesupremacy #americanhistory #ourstreets #whosestreets #blacktranslivesmatter #saytheirnames #prosecutethepolice #breonnataylor #georgefloyd #standupfightback #nofascistusa #notrumpnokkknofascistusa #thisiswhatdemocracylookslike #racism #policethepolice #policeviolence #defundthepolice https://www.instagram.com/p/CCBp079AAR-/?igshid=1o1gi9zrl86wi

Whose Streets?, Charlottesville, & Activist Storytelling
Last Saturday morning, I headed to the movie theater, eyes glued to my phone as I tried (unsuccessfully) to navigate and check twitter at the same time. I found my seat in the dark, still trying to piece together what was happening and what had already happened in Charlottesville.
Then I shut off my phone to watch Whose Streets? -- which is, well... the short version would be to say that it's a look at community activism in Ferguson after the killing of Michael Brown. But that's a sanitized and simplified version of the truth.
A few weeks earlier, my sister told me to go watch Whose Streets. I forgot about it until the 9th, when I read an interview with activist Ashley Yates about what happened in Ferguson three years ago. It reminded me of why I'd stopped trusting my local newspaper, the paper I'd grown up reading: During the protests that continued for years in St. Louis (and still continue), the newspaper said one thing, and my sister said another. The crinkled newsprint said that the protestors turned violent, and my sister said that the police tear gassed MoKaBe's, a local coffee shop.
So I went to watch Whose Streets?, meeting up with a friend and sidling into a mostly empty theater where only a few older white folks were. It was chilling to watch the documentary and make the obvious connection to the weekend events -- how the police met the community in Ferguson with violence, while Nazis in Charlottesville marched freely. How activist Brittany Ferrell was charged with a felony for kicking a car plowing through a protest line (read: a woman trying to drive over protestors, wtf) -- and how that morning, a white supremacist had driven into a crowd of anti-racist counter protestors.
I was reminded that (racist) history repeats itself, and that the only way to break that cycle is to learn from it. That's why Whose Streets? is so important. According to its website, it's a documentary "told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement" and "an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising." It's about what really happened in Ferguson, not some distorted, sensationalist version shown in the news half a country away.
What I want most in this push for diversity in YA lit is for marginalized writers to get to tell their own stories, whatever that may be - immigration, slice-of-life romance, social justice, magic boarding school, you name it. Storytelling is how we connect with others, help people feel less alone, and learn from (and fight) the past. It's crucial that the people who should be heard, get heard.
Whose Streets? does that and far more. It's activist storytelling (well, truthtelling) - and we can never have too much of that. You should absolutely go watch the documentary if it's still showing in theaters in your area. For more on this:

Just got back home from the premiere of #whosestreets a film about the movement that started in Ferguson directed by @damondavis lemme tell you I have not cried in a film like I had for that screening ever. I'm a mixed boy from the suburbs and for most of my life I denounced my blackness. I hated it I hated every drop of melanin in my skin. Then the protests in Ferguson happened and I heard for the first time #blacklivesmatter . It was the first time I felt proud of being black. It was the first time I didn't care that listening to rap music made me less approachable by white folk. It was then I began to decolonize myself and the world around me. My nappy roots emerged from the no lye relaxer and I woke up. This film was a phenomenal portrayal of my city, my culture, my peers that rose to the occasion and made a stand against oppression. It was truly one of the most influential things I've seen in my life and I'd like to personally thank everyone that A. Was a part of the movement and fought for justice and B. Everyone that was a part in making this film and documenting this story! #staywoke #resist

Whose Streets? premieres today
Whose Streets?, the new documentary from Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis, is out today.
Told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement for justice, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising. When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy.
Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the national guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance.
Filmmakers Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis know this story because they are the story. Whose Streets? is a powerful battle cry from a generation fighting, not for their civil rights, but for the right to live.
