Writer Q&A Tag Game

Thank you so much @mthollowell-writes for the tag! I loved reading your answers and this was fun to fill out :)

1) What motivates you to write?

Mostly my mind cannot stop thinking of Situations. Whether they're for characters from my current TV/film hyperfixations or my own OCs, writing is the best way for me to get it out of my system and the artistic form I'm the best at.

2) A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)

From Where Paradise Died and Lived:

Sophie was just about draw her hand away, and perhaps he felt the pressure lessening, for then he brought his own hand up to cover hers, to keep her from moving it. He held her hand there, his fingers curling just barely under hers, not with any force but with a lightness she had just been administering to him. And underneath it, a reassurance that seemed to communicate he wanted something that quickened her heart. She knew if she proceeded here, she would be crossing a line she had thought she wouldn’t cross for a long time yet. She finally raised her gaze to meet his, and all sense escaped her—his eyes looked like the way she felt, all the encouragement she needed. A little bit scared, a little bit in love, she kissed him.

3) Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them and what are they like?

Honestly, I haven't gotten to write a lot of him yet, but I have a soft spot for Fendley. He believes passionately in the Velitovan cause and wants to fight for its independence...but he's also the biggest homebody and hates being away from Merity. The two parts of his personality are just direct contradictions to each other, it makes me laugh.

4) What process of writing do you enjoy the most?

Character building: creating a backstory, personality, aesthetic, all that good stuff

5) What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)

Describing inner turmoil? When I look at the passages I'm most proud of, they all have to do with an internal dialogue of some kind, usually in a situation with heightened tension or vulnerability where a character has a lot going on in their mind.

6) What is something in the writeblr community is most enjoyable?

Making friends with everyone! The support system is a huge motivator and definitely something that keeps me going.

7) A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)

Scrivener, my beloved. I was working in Evernote for way longer than I ever should have and was getting just so sick of it that I finally took the plunge to get Scrivener. Night and day comparison. There are so many great tools and functions and I love being able to have one document for a WIP and its outline, characters, worldbuilding, everything. It's definitely pricey up front, but in the long run worth it since it's just a one-time purchase. Highly recommend giving it a trial run to anyone interested.

8) A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)

I really love the country of Velitova, especially the lands beyond the Idylwild. In-universe they're written off as being sort of rural, but the nature out there is so beautiful and pristine. Huge rolling hills, a huge lake surrounded by flowering trees, cliffs facing a wild ocean...yes.

9) What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?

Stop writing: Whether it's a for a few days or a few months, taking a break from my WIPs and re-setting my mind whenever I am struggling is always the best solution.

Return to worldbuilding: I've seen a lot of people discuss how we get desensitized to the cool things in our WIPs after a while. Creating more cool things that will be new to me as well often makes my WIP exciting again.

Get outside: Traveling always inspires me, but I find even walking around your neighborhood can be so helpful! I especially walking among trees in the fall, that air of melancholy during that time of year just gets me.

dumping a bunch of my wrestling ocs here

Hello hello, it's me again. It hasn't been too long since my last post with my little wrestlingfic OCs, but I've got a good collection of them now and I thought now would be a good time to share them again. Don't worry, I won't drop their backstories and everything here and make this post any longer than it's already going to be, I'm just going to drop short descriptions of them and notes regarding their designs.

Stuff is under the cut.

Dexx

The protagonist of the story. A boy who traveled all the way from Kiribati on a boat, risking his life to reach the US and leaving behind his family and friends to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. His passion for the sport burns harder than the sun, and his talent and willingness to improve backs up his cocky and crass attitude. Can cling to a grudge for a very, very long time - and has a crafty way with words and holding his own inside the ring.

Design Notes: In the second half of the story where most of it revolves around his character being corrupted with obsession of staying at the top with his championship title; he wants to change his hair color to signify a change in his character. He didn't want to alter his maroon hair though - liking it too much to do so, and decides he'll change his strand of black hair into white.

His gloves have 'Dexx' written on it. They were written by himself with a white marker. His shoes didn't originally have those laces, but he took a bunch of rope and tied it as seen in the photo for the simple reason that he saw someone wear shoes designed that way and he thought it looked cool.

Madelca

A girl with an unorthodox fighting style; preferring to use strikes with her fists for most of her arsenal, and even going as far as to wear boxing gloves inside a wrestling ring. Comes from a long bloodline of successful people across fields such as medicine, art, education, etc. Her bratty and rude personality hides a long and painful experience within her family; and a scarier and more obsessive version of her that she represses.

Design Notes: Underneath her boxing gloves hides the fact that she was born with only 4 fingers on each hand; and all her other fingers are slightly smaller than the average person's as well. Her left hand is also covered in old scars left by her scratching at it in hatred of the environment she had to grow up in. The boxing gloves check a lot of boxes for Madelca; allowing her to keep what she herself considers 'disgusting' away from people's sights, and helps deliver more impact and cover more range in her punches that she would normally be unable to achieve without them.

Her heterochronic eyes reflect the colors of the country's flag that she hails from - that being Belgium. She'd actually much rather have her hair down than styled in those pigtails, but her family didn't approve of the initial appearance she wanted to go with.

Naguib

Full of energy and a pep in his step. A boy who makes up for his smaller stature with his zeal in the ring, and always extremely supportive of those he considers his friends. Though his win-loss record may not be the most inspiring, he will never hesitate to be someone's biggest fan and hype them up before, during, and after a match, and it's easy for people to get attached to his endearing and genuine heart when they're around him.

Design Notes: His kneepads are themed and patterned with the Egyptian flag. His elbowpads have Arabic text written on them (on the left being 'fight', and the right being 'tenacity'). The 'scars' on his face aren't actually scars, but face paint that he had his friend draw on him because Naguib's friend had paint on his face as well, and he wanted some too because Naguib thought it was awesome. Some people take Naguib less seriously because of it, but he doesn't mind.

His shoes were given as a Christmas gift, by the same friend above. He is almost always seen wearing them whenever he goes outside ever since.

Valentina

A former model for magazines who initially joined the sport for money; but came around to realize that she really enjoyed beating people up and feeling superior. Her cutesy and flirtatious front buries the reality that she is a museum full of submission moves and limb-breaking attacks, with a sadistic streak that relishes in making her opponents squirm. Has a soft spot for science, and particularly enjoys chemistry.

Design Notes: She has two tattoos of roses; one on her back visible through the gap in her top, and one on her right shoulder. Doesn't wear shoes because she feels much more agile without them; complimenting her serpentine movements and speed.

There's a butterfly hairpin on the right side of her hair, which keeps the tail of hair she likes to slap opponents with from falling apart. Her collar has a red skull with three yellow flowers surrounding it from below.

Lucia

Pure from soul to bone, and the kindest person you'll ever meet, though a little naive. She is a walking ray of sunshine and positivity, always seeming to light up any room she enters. A favorite among the fans for her loveable character and underdog aura - but her body is unfit for wrestling and she wins matches through heart and will alone, enjoying the sport too much to quit, even if it's to her own detriment.

Design Notes: If it wasn't already obvious by the maple leaves on her outfit, she's from Canada.

Everything from her thin stature and the way she's dressed reflects her origins of becoming a wrestler; where her friends originally invited her to try out wrestling as a joke, but she was too enamored by the feeling of release and catharsis that she gets from wrestling, because for once in her life; it feels like she isn't being held down by her body's limitations. It's almost become an addiction that's fueled her since then.

Ying

The second-ranked wrestler in the world, with a near perfect record that's only suffered her single loss to the current champion of the company. A beautiful woman who is a master in close combat and martial arts, who takes pleasure in extending the torture weaker opponents have to endure against her by taking her slow time in finishing them off. Hard to get along with, and prideful in her appearance and capabilities.

Design Notes: Though the heels she wears may seem impractical (and realistically, they are), she's completely mastered being able to move around in them, and having them on only brings a second layer of pain to her kicks and stomps. When she gets caught in a pinch, she's likely to aim between her opponent's legs while the referee is distracted. Damn cheaters.

Although her name and the dress she wears gives it away, she is in fact from China. Her design took a lot of inspiration from Chun-Li, though that's likely apparent to see.

Reyna

Design Notes: Subtle, but she has a painted star on her chin. Her elbow pads have the color scheme and pattern of the Philippine flag, her country of origin (I promise I wasn't power-tripping when I made a Filipino of all people the main antagonist for the first half of the story, lol).

The peak of the mountain - she is the current champion with an undefeated record. Tallying a streak of opponents that she's mowed down in ways unprecedented within the sport's history. A complete package in the ring with power, speed, and technique, though her most terrifying strength is her seemingly undying resilience. Her cold and arrogant attitude is rooted from a long, harsh road of betrayal and distrust.

She has four tattoos in total - on the right side of her chest, her right shoulder, and left wrist; all of which are tailor-made with Filipino designs. The last one being on her back is a crown, fitting for her status as champion and her name (Reyna means 'queen' in English), and her lifeless eyes reflect how harsh and callous she's become ever since the incident with her last friend group.

Kali

A young girl brimming with potential; and having already proven it inside the ring with her stellar performances and adeptness in each aspect within it, possessing a wide variety of moves to pull out whether she's flying from the turnbuckles or stretching you on the mat. Generally emotionless and almost robotic, from personality to fighting style. She's being trained under Reyna's wing.

Design Notes: Underneath her eyepatch is a scar left behind by a rough surgery. Kali's only friend in high school was partially blind, and when she found out about this; she immediately made the offer to donate one of her own eyes to her friend, despite the fact it'd make her own life hell or maybe even end it. After years of reluctance from her friend, they'd eventually give in after some convincing. The process wasn't 100% smooth, and Kali has had an ugly scar and mark on her left eye since then.

Her hair looks like that because I was thinking about Nagisa when writing her backstory, and that's why she has those little dog ears.

Xealouz

The man who Dexx grew up watching, and his childhood idol. He is partially retired nowadays and has taken a backseat to wrestling inside the ring. He is the booker and chief operating officer of the company, and has already been established as a legend and hall of famer within the industry. Will take matters into his own hands if he really feels the need to, and can still go inside the ring despite being past his prime.

Design Notes: The suit he's seen wearing in the picture above is his regular, everyday outfit. You'll rarely ever see him in his wrestling gear. His dual-colored eyes are meant to symbolize how one part of him is his more mature, mentor side now that he's older, and the other half is his bloodthirsty, conqueror of worlds persona when he was still a feisty young up-and-comer. As for the gear itself - his elbow pads have red skulls over them, and the XZ on his trunks are referencing the starting and ending letters of his ring name, and the Latin on it's side reads the following:

Veni vidi vici: I came, I saw, I conquered

Oderint dum metuant: Let them hate, so long as they fear

A lot of his design in general is inspired from Triple H.

This is Chet Ennin, or Agent CE (later shortened to ACE) and he's... my ace! He's honestly like the very last person you'd ever expect to be a secret agent because he's got 0 self confidence and is extremely shy, but he's also quick to step up whenever someone else needs help. Plus something about the cool secret agent outfit makes him feel super brave.

I've been trying to write a fic where he goes through the events of Club Penguin's storyline but i've been extremely slow getting Anywhere with it because i keep getting distracted by a personal worldbuilding project. He's basically trying really hard to be nice to Herbert but he isn't having any of it

Some very fun traits Chet’s got, it sounds like he’d fit right in with the EPF, boosting each other and teamwork make up like 97% of their strength. Tbh that shit I was ranting about in the tags of that one post, about why I feel alienated from artist communities online, is a huge part of why I hate the way the word "entitlement" (derogatory) has no set meaning

Because on the one hand, in fandom spaces especially, there are a lot of people who act...for lack of a better term, super fucking entitled to an endless stream of free content that caters to their exact specific tastes and get really pissy if you dare to create anything for YOURSELF rather than for THEM and excuse you how DARE you make an AU or have a different headcanon--

On the other hand, holy fucking shit, online artist communities...I've been in and out of them for over a decade and the level of drama and blatant hypocrisy I've seen is off the fucking charts. Love how many FANartists are so aggressive about copyright that they'll accuse someone of stealing their OC for having a vaguely similar and very common color palette. Who will talk about all their influences and then stick "DO NOT TAKE INSPIRATION FROM MY WORK" on their profiles - and that's not hyperbole, I've seen it, verbatim! If I had a dollar for every fucking artist I've seen who thought they were the sole true owner of an extremely generic composition...well, I'd definitely have a nice set of ring splints by now. Dare I even mention the omegaverse lawsuit?

And the thing is, the people who take these attitudes to these extremes are a tiny, TINY minority - but...they're loud enough to have an impact on others. Even if it's not to such an extreme as "I can't believe I have to stop my pirated movie marathon to file another DMCA, how could this person really think they could get away with it, an OC with blue hair and angel wings is MY idea!" there's still a pervasive attitude of "copyright maximalism for me, but minimalism for everyone I can argue is Bigger than me" that really goes unquestioned in a lot of these spaces. Similarly, between that horrible loud minority in fandom and corporate Astroturfing fandom spaces, it really feels like a lot of non-fanartists see fanart as being part of the actual canon, that just springs forth fully formed from the ether, even in spaces where people...nominally know better

So some people will treat hobby art like a side hustle in the sense of "well with the state of the economy today everyone could use more security so if you're gonna act like I'm here to provide YOU a service, fuck off, pay me" which is honestly totally fair, and some will just be hopeful that people will be generous toward people who make them happy but not have any expectations or demands thereof which is also cool, and some will sell actual goods and services which is totally fine, and some people will press the fact that if you want other people to make fan work that caters to you personally then commissioning them will be a lot more effective than just complaining that you're right and they're wrong and just generally being a giant penis, which is also completely true and fair, but others will indeed have every ounce of leftism just leave their bodies when you point out that drawing blorbo from your shows doesn't make them uniquely MORE deserving of survival than anyone else/that the people they're complaining about "stealing [their] jobs" and even the "lazy consumers" need to eat too, or ask them to examine their beliefs about IP law for internal consistency and stop equating legality to morality whenever it benefits them, or even just come up with a meaningful set of standards for what constitutes small enough to be "sacred" vs. big enough that derivative work is inevitable (ask me about what I call the Mario Kart model of copyright, that I propose until art is no longer a Market under capitalism)

And some people will be critical of the Patreon/Ko-fi/etc. economy and the flaws of the culture in online artist spaces for those reasons...but others will be critical of it because they're really really mad that those uppity snobs don't know their place and need to just make pretty things for them to mindlessly consume without even so much as a moment of basic human connection beyond hitting a button, or that they themselves aren't popular enough on the internet to get any kind of mutual aid...in the kind of way where they'd throw everyone like themselves under the bus just as hard if their own internet identity became Marketable enough; the problem isn't that PEOPLE in general get left out of this "merit"-based model but the fact that THEY PERSONALLY do

And all of the above will call some or all of the attitudes across the gap "entitled" and from that word there's no way to fucking tell whether the complaint is rational or not

And it's honestly one of my least favorite things about internet culture

Okay, it's more like a ton. I used to draw countryhumans in my old acc on insta and it still has the old fanart there and i can't BEAR to think of it, I HATE IT😭. Honestly it's every fanart i drew

Yes i do, whenever i draw, i put some music on my TV if i draw in my living room. Usually it's just some songs i've been listening to recently like; 3:16am by Jhene Aiko and I Don't Care by Violent Vira (there's more). Other than that, i put youtube videos of my favourite youtubers if i decided to draw in my room ^3^

I was like 11 or something when i saw this video mv on youtube with jacksepticeye and markplier fanart, and i thought the fanart was cool so I drew it. Back that i must've thought it looked cool and i started to draw more until i drew other fandoms like undertale and it lead me to knowing how to create ocs of my own and then that's how i'm here right now!

📖 How do you feel about fics based on you art?

If you wrote a fic based on my fanart, i would be like this: "oh🥹" I would be extremely honored and happy 😔💓

🤗 What advice would you give to new fan artists who are just getting started?

As someone who doesn't draw fanart often, i'll tell you that if wanted to draw a character, you would have to draw light sketches and doodles of them, if you really wanna make a good fanart of them, i suggest you study them, practice drawing them often but tbh you could just to go with the flow 🤷‍♀️ like the same thing with general art; just practice and you'll make progress 👍 but for me i'm just chill and going with the flow if you know what i mean.

uuuh, five things I like about myself! Here I go!

I like the fact that I've learnt to say no and not feel bad about it! I still struggle to put up boundaries when it's about people I really really really care about, but I used to be too nurturing for my own good. I used to manage a guild in a once-popular MMORPG, and that experience taught me that absorbing too much negativity and sucking things up for the sake of being "the healer" is only destructive;

Riding off the first point, the fact that I'm independent! I value my alone time above anything else, and don't feel the need to spend the rest of my life catering to a partner or a family. I don't have a lot of energy, so while I love my friends and family I also need to find time to be at home by myself, otherwise I'll be overridden by anxiety;

My hair! I appreciate the fact that it's gotten as long as I always wanted while still being strong and without needing specific or expensive products. I just get split ends, but that's fair! thank you keratin -u-;

My art skills! I don't really want this to be seen as bragging but I'm really happy to see I'm still able to learn new stuff about how to draw different body parts. Killer Whale is helping me immensely in this sense, because I really wanted my characters to look a certain way and I just could not compromise, so I kept trying and trying until I got the looks I wanted (Lidija was especially hard, because her fringe just wouldn't. sit. right with me. I'll share the beta designs one day, she changed quite a few times!);

The fact that I'm awkward! That's ok! That's me! It means I'm being me!

PHEW THAT WAS... HARDER THAN EXPECTED but it's a great exercise to remind ourselves of our worth!

I do tend to feel very invasive whe interacting with others, even when I'm asked to contribute but the experience so far in the KHR fandom has been... immensely positive! I really hope to become someone who people can feel free to interact with whenever they feel like it.

Hey Windy, I've been struggling lately with artblock/fatigue, and I was wondering; how do you go from idea to art, even with like little scribbles? Do you have like a mental list of ideas for drawings already, or do you just sit down to draw and have it come to you then? Do you ever have to force yourself to draw something? What would be your advice to someone who is trying to draw more frequently, but is struggling with ideas/things to draw?

well, that’s funny because I have ALSO been going through some bad artblock/fatigue lately

I rarely RARELY have an idea come to me when im facing the canvas, I cant just sit down and wait for an idea to slap me in the face. usually when i try to do that i just end up either scrolling through social media or just looking at a blank canvas for hours and hours without doing anything

most of my ideas I get either through friends or through music! I talk a lot about ocs with my friends, and we think about interactions with each other or send each other memes that remind us of our characters, and sometimes we do that (even though we DO talk about cool, more aesthetic ideas) but shitposts are a effort-cheap and easy way to draw stuff or break out of art block 

With music I just let it play and let my mind go nuts with oc AMV scenarios. Like not to be cringe on main or whatever but imagining your ocs doing crazy shit to edgy music?? absolutely fucking rules and I think everyone should do it.  I really like making different playlists for my characters and playing them depending on who i want to think about, since i end up associating the songs to each character whenever i hear them my brain goes hey!! think about this bitch now!!!  I’m not sure if you yourself have characters, but if you DONT then making playlists for general vibes works just as well. want to draw something dark and gloomy? make a dark ambience playlist. want to draw smth dynamic and actiony? bam, playlist with songs with a high bpm.  this doesnt ALWAYS work, but it helps me enormously!  I only have singular oc playlists for like 6 of them (my main ones) even though i have many characters, because its actually very hard for me to associate songs to a character, the rest of my oc lists are general story/universe vibe lists. My bf though has a playlist for each of their characters its incredible idk how they do it

sometimes I will have ideas while listening to music but i cant act on them until weeks later, for whatever reason, so a lot of times i will make a WIP file (i have a folder specifically for WIPS) and pick it up whenever in the future i feel like it (or maybe never)  or if i cant get to my laptop ill make a note of the idea wherever I can so I can remember about it (for example that pic of alex shredding a guitar i did for tapas? that one actually sat as a single line of text on my sketchbook for like 2+ months)

speaking of, having a sketchbook is also great! just a small little notebook where I draw... random crap. very low effort nonsense, with pencils and pens and dollar store markers. its a cheap sketchbook too, it doesnt have to be anything fancy either, but it helps for drawing out ideas/thumbnails (that you may or may not polish later), just drawing things to get them out of your system (with the least effort required) and keeping notes for overall stuff (i have... so much extinction crap written down on these its so disorganized oh god)

I hope this helps! at the end of the day there’s not a guaranteed-to-work solution, but you could try other things in the meantime  a lot of people also just tell you to plow through an art block by forcing out art which is horrible advice. unless art is your work you shouldnt HAVE to force it. youre doing it for fun! it’s ok to put it down and focus on other things. it might take a couple days, or over a week, but sometime you’ll think ‘oh shit i want to draw’ again and youll get back to it :3
