THE LAST DAY OF PITRUPAKSHA SHRADH : 17 SEP 2020: IT'S SIGNIFICANCE & WHAT TO DO. We owe a karmic debt to our ancestors. It is said by offering pind daan'' during Pitru Paksha or Shradh, one pays it back made for the poor or animals is auspicious. The shradh can be performed by the eldest son or the eldest male of the family. The rituals under pitra paksha involve Tarpanam and Shradh to be performed to pay homage to the dead. The souls of three preceding generations of one's ancestor reside in Pitriloka, a realm between heaven and earth. This realm is governed by Yama, the god of death, who takes the soul of a dying man from earth to Pitriloka. When a person of the next generation dies, the first generation shifts to heaven and unites with God, so Shraddha offerings are not given. Thus, only the three generations in Pitriloka are given Shraddha rites. It is believed that the ancestors came in any form to check on you, so, never send anyone back with empty hands. Treat the beggars and poor people nicely. Feed animals, donate to the needy give food to hungry, donate grains & clothes. Pind Daan or Shraddha Karma can be performed every month’s Amavasya for the peace of the ancestors, but Pitru Paksha is considered more important for Shraddha. The Tarpanam and Shradh must also be performed by those who have Pitru Dosha (the ancestor's curse). Those who may have harmed, hurt or displeased their dead elders invite their wrath. Therefore, to seek forgiveness, men perform the Tarpanam and the shradh rituals by offering food and water to crows (believed to be the representative of Yama, the God of death or dead ancestors manifested as crows). Ideally, one must perform the Tarpanam on all the sixteen days, but the Mahalaya Amavasya is the most important. It is 17th September this time.
