‘horrible mother’ ; kim heechul
overview: moonbyul never planned on rolling out of bed to find that one of her worst fears had been realized
content: big age gap ig lmao (24 & 35)
++++
Min Moonbyul was ordinary: she lived with her best friend, Yuju, in their Pasadena appartment. They had loud neighbors, they worked their jobs, and they had steady relationships. Both hailed from Korea, where the rest of their family and their significant others were located. The two resided within the US due to both having gone to college in California and both getting jobs within their fields there.
They often flew back to Korea to visit family and to see their significant others. Moonbyul often stayed at her boyfriend’s appartment, while Yuju stayed with her girlfriend. Planes made Moonbyul sick, without fail, everytime. For the first 2 days after getting to her destination, she was always hunched over a toilet bowl.
So when she was throwing up on the morning of the 3rd day, she began to worry. Heechul had already left for work earlier, which Moonbyul was thankful for. She knew that if he was there, he’d know something was wrong since it was the 3rd day. Moonbyul thought over everything she had ate within the last 24 hours, ruling everything out. Then she moved to thinking through anything that could be the reason.
Once the thought of pregnancy crossed her mind she nearly catapuled herself into Heechul’s bedroom that they shared when she visited. She quickly unplugged her phone with shaky hands and went to her callendar app. She scrolled back to the previous month: November. She and Yuju had visited Korea during America’s Thanksgiving break, and her period was supposed to come the day after she returned to America, but it never had. Moonbyul had written it off as the travel that made her miss it, as it wasn’t uncommon.
Tears started to well up in her eyes as she went to her contacts list and pressed Yuju’s contact name as fast as she could. After 2 rings, she heard Yuju answer with a tired voice. “Moonbyul, why are you up at 7 AM?” Moonbyul couldn’t help the strangled sob that she let out, alerting Yuju. “Oh, no, don’t tell me you and Heechul broke up . . .”
“No, but, I’m scared he might after this.” Moonbyul managed to get out.
“Moonbyul, get to the point please, you’re worrying me.”
“I - I think I’m pregnant.”
“WHAT?” Yuju screamed, “How?”
“I’m on the pill, so I don’t know why. But, it’s the third day since we’ve been here and I’m still throwing up. Plus I missed my period this month, but I thought it was just from travel like it usually is.” Moonbyul said, resting her head in her hand. This couldn’t be happening, not now.
“Okay, I’m going buy you a pregnancy test. Stay there. Don’t do anything dramatic, and don’t tell him yet.” Yuju said before hanging up.

Moonbyul was practically pacing by the front door. When she finally heard the knock, she praactically lept forward to open it. Yuju quickly walked in, the bag in her left hand. She rushed Moonbyul up the stairs, shutting her in the bathroom with the box after they found out how to use it. Yuju then left after being told many times by Moonbyul that she needed to go back and spend time with her girlfriend.
“And besides, I think I’m done having the panic attack, I just need to find a way to tell him. He gets back at 8:30, so I have less than an hour to think of a way. Thank you so much Yuju.” Moonbyul told her, her heart hammering in her chest at the idea of being pregnant.
Once the door closed, Moonbyul ran back upstairs, seeing that she still had 30 minutes until Heechul got home and a little less than 27 minutes until her pregnancy test was ready.
She was scared, more than anything. She grew up with a horrible mother who treated her like dirt, and from the age of 5, she had never felt the want to have children, no matter how many of her significant others tried to talk to her about having children with them in the future. She felt as if she had poor maternal instincts, depite how much people told her she was amazing with children. She had a job that she had just landed, and if she was pregnant, she’d have to move back to Korea with Heechul. Heechul was another problem: would he want anything to do with her or the baby if she was pregnant? To her, the negatives outwieghed the positives, but what scared her the most, was that Moonbyul didn’t know what she wanted the test to say. All of the negatives could be fixed if the test did come out positive. Moonbyul just didn’t know how to feel.
Thoughts ran through her head like they were in a marathon. They never stopped. Before she knew it, she heard the door downstairs open quietly, signialing Heechul was home - early. She felt her heart hammering and the cold tile of the bathtub against her back. The bathmath she sat on was the only thing giving her warmth. She was still dressed in Heechul’s shirt from the night before with a pair of sleep shorts that she threw on before Yuju had came.
The timer for her pregnancy test was still going with a little more than a minute left and she began to sob again, trying to hold in the noise, by to no avail. A sob rang through the apartment, making Heechul’s movements from the first floor stop before he ran upstairs, calling her name in a slight panic as he did so. He threw the bedroom door open, looking for her before he saw the bathroom light on. He was expecting Moonbyul to be asleep, not to be crying in their bathroom.
He slowly opened the door to see his girlfriend on the floor, a sobbing mess. He went to tunnel vision, seeing nothing else as he ran to her side. He was on his knees as he held her hand in his hands. “Baby, what’s wrong?”
“Oh God, please don’t say that.”
“Why?”
She couldn’t answer, as the timer on her phone went off next to her. They both looked at it, and she shakily reached her hand out to turn it off.
Heechul gave her a questioning look, causing her to just sob harder. He went to pull her into his chest despite his confusion, but she stood before he could. He watched her every move as she slowly walked to the counter, where she picked up a pregnancy test. Once she looked at it, she started sobbing harder. Heechul felt his heart drop. Was - was she pregnant?
“Babe, are - are you pregnant?” Heechul immediately stood, going to her side.
She slid the test to where he could see it: two pink lines were unmistakeable. His voice was barely a whisper, “I’m gonna be a dad?”
She managed to push the sobs down to let out a quiet sentence, “I understand if you want to break up.”
“What? No!” He said, spinning her to him. “I’m gonna be a dad! Moonbyul, we’re gonna be parents! This is the best news I’ve ever gotten! Oh God, I love you so much, and I’m gonna love our kid more than anything.”
She looked up in disbelief, seeing his eyes shinning with tears and a large smile on his face. “You - you want the baby?”
“Of course, you’re going to be the greatest mother of all time and I’m going to be the best dad. We’re gonna do amazing. I love you so much.”

After the doctor and nurses had done the baby’s checkup to make sure it was breathing properly and bathed, they huddled the baby in a pink blanket, signaling it was a girl. Moonbyul looked to Heechul, who was crying in the chair next to her as he held her hand.
The nurse brought the girl over to Moonbyul, placing her on Moonbyul’s chest. Moonbyul lifted a finger and ran it over her cheek lightly; she was so beautiful. The girl moved her hand and grabbed the finger that Moonbyul was holding out.
After Moonbyul had her time, the baby was passed over to Heechul, who was looking at her like she was the best thing he’d seen in his entire life. He held her close to him, enjoying the moment like he and his baby girl were the only ones on Earth at that point. He whispered something that no one else could hear, “I promise you that I’m going to give you and your mother the best life I can possibly give.”
