A new banner in West Kelowna, questioning what children are being taught in school has been sparking outrage due to its message and the graphics on it.

The billboard, stationed along Highway 97 in West Kelowna, shows a cartoon woman, who appears to be a teacher, wearing a mask in front of a rainbow flag with a caption reading “What are your kids really learning in school?”

One advocate of the queer community was shocked to see the billboard, calling it ‘discriminating.’

“It’s promoting hate against the 2SLGBTQ, against educators who are supportive and trying to create safe spaces in schools, and discriminating against a whole community,” said Wilbur Turner, Chair of Advocacy Canada. [...]

In a phone call, the co-organizer asked to remain anonymous and said parents involved in this group are concerned that they are losing their rights to parent their own children, adding that they are trying to start a conversation about what kids are being taught in school.

However, Turner says the billboard, is a targeted message directed at the queer community and that when it comes to children, it’s doing more harm than good.

“This targeting is really harmful to children, especially children who are trans or gender diverse and it sends a message to them that it’s not okay for them to be who they are,” said Turner. “They shouldn’t have to fight for their existence” [...]

Even as I type this in late afternoon in the Northeast of the US, another potential disaster is looming. Wildfires are threatening Yellowknife – the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories.

Also in Canada, British Columbia is experiencing a wildfire emergency near West Kelowna.

This was no ordinary photography assignment - it was a helicopter elopement to a mountain called Little White, nestled within the heart of the stunning Big White region.

Elopements have always held a special place in my heart. There's something incredibly intimate and raw about these quiet celebrations of love, where couples embrace the freedom to exchange vows in unconventional settings. It is a privilege for me as a photographer to document these profoundly personal moments, encapsulating the emotions and memories that will last a lifetime.

The notion of eloping has evolved over time, shedding its earlier connotations of secrecy and rebellion. Today, it symbolizes a deliberate choice to break away from tradition and immerse oneself in the beauty of nature, proclaiming love without societal expectations. And what better backdrop than the breathtaking landscapes of British Columbia to amplify this sense of freedom?

As we soared above the picturesque landscape in the helicopter, it felt like the world had faded away, leaving only the couple, their love, and the wild beauty that surrounded us. A wildfire-related travel ban to hotels or campgrounds in many communities in the southern Interior will be lifted at midnight, according to B.C.'s Minister of Emergency Management.

The order was implemented Saturday and restricted travel for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodations to Kelowna and West Kelowna, Kamloops, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton and Vernon.

It was designed to make space for the thousands of evacuees ordered out of their homes due to hundreds of wildfires burning around the province, as well as first responders and support staff.

However, non-essential travel to West Kelowna continues to be prohibited and people are being urged to stay away from the Lake Country and Shuswap areas.
