Dr. Knie

Gerade bei Zwillingsarten, die optisch schwer zu unterscheiden sind, ist es umso wichtiger, die Gesänge zu kennen. Bei Ziplzalp und Fitis ist das einfach, bei Sumpf- und Weidenmeise vielleicht schon ein wenig schwieriger.

In der Wahner Heide wurde jetzt der Orpheusspötter (Hippolais polyglotta) gemeldet (siehe Foto). Der sieht dem Gelbspötter sehr ähnlich. Um uns vorzubereiten, haben wir uns die Gesänge noch mal angehört.

Da fiel mir die Unterscheidung schon nicht mehr ganz so leicht. Die Literatur weisst darauf hin, dass dem Orpheusspötter die scharfen Töne fehlen. Das war schon ein guter Tipp. Aber der Hinweis eines Freundes brachte es auf den Punkt: der Geldpötter singt „Doktor Knie, Doktor Knie“, der Orpheusspötter nicht.

Jetzt ist es mit solchen Merksprüchen immer eine schwierige Sache. Und bei Spöttern sicher umso mehr. Sie sind oft nicht mehr als eine kleine Gedächtisstütze, und weniger eine präzise Aussage über den Gesang. Aber ab jetzt habe ich, wenn ich an einen der beiden Vögel denke, immer ein kleines Schmunzeln auf den Lippen – Danke, Dr. Knie!

Dr. Knee

Especially with sibling species who can hardly be distinguished opticly it is more important to know their songs. For chiffchaff and willow warbler it is quite easy, for marsh and willow tit maybe a little harder. Now a melodius warbler (Hippolais polyglotta) was spotted in the Wahner Heide near Cologne (see photo above). This bird looks quite like the ictrine warbler. So we prepped ourselves by listening to their songs.

The literature says the melodius warbler does not have the sharp sounds – as its name suggests allready. Which is quite a good tip. But a hint of a friend of mine was: the interine warbler sings „Doctor Knee! Doctor Knee!“ but the meldodius warbler doesn't.

But of course one can not take these mnemonics like that a 100%. They rarely provide a pricise statement about a song. But when I think of one of these two birds now I have a littel smile on my face. Thank you, Dr. Knee!
