#Armour #ArmourViennaBitesOriginalFlavored #CannedMeat #ViennaSausageReview
I tried the Armour Vienna Bites Original Flavored and these were pretty good.
These were microwaved and I drained the liquid that was around these vienna sausage bites.
These were firm but soft and had a light pork flavor.
The liquid on these were lightly salty.
These are just the original vienna sausages but cut mini.
I would eat these again.
Got at Dollar Tree.

"rn I feel like reading about someone's quiet daily life, maybe a diary or letters, set in a place or context I don't know much about, without turmoil or tragedy" oh! do you have any recommendations for books like this?
This is one of my favourite types of books! Here are 30(ish) recs...
May Sarton's The House by the Sea or Plant Dreaming Deep
Gyrðir Elíasson's Suðurglugginn / La fenêtre au sud (not translated into English unfortunately!), also Bergsveinn Birgisson's Landslag er aldrei asnalegt / Du temps qu'il fait (exists in German too)
Gretel Ehrlich's The Solace of Open Spaces, which iirc was originally written as journal entries and letters before being adapted into a book
Kenneth White's House of Tides: Letters from Brittany and Other Lands of the West
Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book
The Diary of a Provincial Lady, E. M. Delafield
Growing Up with the Impressionists: The Diary of Julie Manet
Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim (do not read if you don't like flowers)
The Road Through Miyama by Leila Philip (I've mentioned it before, it feels like this gif)
The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, I keep recommending this one but it's so nice and I love snails
Epicurean Simplicity, Stephanie Mills
The Light in the Dark: A winter journal by Horatio Clare
The Letters of Rachel Henning
The letters of Tove Jansson, also The Summer Book and Fair Play
The diary of Sylvia Townsend Warner—here's an entry where she describes some big cats at the zoo. "Frank and forthcoming, flirtatious carnivores, [...] guttersnipishly loveable"
Tumblr media
The Letters of Rachel Carson & Dorothy Freeman were very sweet and a little bit gay. I mostly remember from this long book I read years ago that Rachel Carson once described herself as "retiring into her shell like a periwinkle at low tide" and once apologised to Dorothy because she had run out of apple-themed stationery.
Jane Austen's letters (quoting the synopsis, "Wiser than her critics, who were disappointed that her correspondence dwelt on gossip and the minutiae of everyday living, Austen understood the importance of "Little Matters," of the emotional and material details of individual lives shared with friends and family")
Madame de Sévigné's letters because obviously, and from the same time period, the letters of the Princess Palatine, Louis XIV's sister-in-law. I read them a long time ago and mostly I remember that I enjoyed her priorities. There's a letter where she complains that she hasn't received the sausages she was promised, and then in the next paragraph, mentions the plot to assassinate the King of England and also, the Tartars are walking on Vienna currently.
Wait I found it:
Tumblr media
R.C. Sherriff's The Fortnight in September (quoting the author, "I wanted to write about simple, uncomplicated people doing normal things")
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith
Pond, Claire-Louise Bennett
Rules for Visiting, Jessica Francis Kane
The following aren't or aren't yet available in English, though some have already been translated in 5-6 languages:
ツバキ文具店 / La papeterie Tsubaki by ito Ogawa
半島へ / La péninsule aux 24 saisons by Mayumi Inaba
Giù la piazza non c'è nessuno, Dolores Prato (for a slightly more conceptual take on the "someone's everyday life" theme—I remember it as quite Proustian in its meticulousness, a bit like Nous les filles by Marie Rouanet which is much shorter and more lighthearted but shows the same extreme attention to childhood details)
Journal d'un homme heureux, Philippe Delerm, my favourite thing about this book is that the goodreads commenter who gave it the lowest rating complained that Delerm misidentified a wine as a grenache when actually it's a cabernet sauvignon. Important review!
Un automne à Kyôto, Corinne Atlan (I find her writing style so lovely)
oh and 西の魔女が死んだ / L’été de la sorcière by Kaho Nashiki —such a little Ghibli film of a book. There's a goodreads review that points out that Japanese slice-of-life films and books have "a certain way of describing small, everyday actions in a soothing, flawless manner that can either wear you out, or make you look at the world with a temporary glaze of calm contentment and introspective understanding [...]"
I'd be happy to get recommendations in this 'genre' as well :)

Evelyn- <snickering> Omg, the ghost particles!! And then we ate the worst food from a chip shop because it was near the dry cleaners.
Isidore- Oh yes, I remember he talked about the rain ruining that sweater for so long.
Ashley- There's another one, that isn't a wardrobe review...
Isidore- Oh please, I've never seen these!
*******************************************************Home Video
Tumblr media
Jonah- <sarcastically> Oh my god! I almost had a nibble. Only three hours in.
Evelyn- Stop it! I'm trying to take a video on how beautiful it is out here.
Jonah- You know that we live right ON the ocean? I don't know why we had to fly out to the mainland so that we can go camping and fishing at a lake, which if I might remind you, you don't even like to do normally.
Evelyn- You be quiet! We're having fun.
Jonah- Give me the phone and I'll film YOU having fun. Just pass it over.
<fumbling>
Evelyn- I'm trying! Just lean over and grab it!
Jonah- This dinghy is going to capsize! Why didn't you book us a proper boat?
<sounds of fumbling a thunk and then darkness>
Evelyn- Because this is fun Jonah! Ah I dropped it! Its wet down there. Do you think its broken?
Jonah- I got it. No its fine. Look there you are. So beautiful, so grimy and frustrated with how boring fishing is.
<Focuses on Evelyn looking cranky>
Tumblr media
Evelyn- You know my Dad helped feed his family by fishing!
Jonah- Mmhmm, well I can help feed my family by buying us some lunch, preferably at a restaurant, preferably one that has a dress code.
Evelyn- If we can catch a fish then we can eat THAT for lunch. That's fresh, lake to table. I'll be that runs at least a few hundred in one of your restaurants. Besides I have an emergency lunch packed! Its hot dogs...
Jonah- Wieners... I think you mean wieners. God knows I know how much you love wieners Evelyn, but... this is too much. I feel sea sick.
Evelyn- We live on a fucking boat Jonah!
Jonah- <fake outrage> Ev! Language. My virgin ears... I think its safe to say all the fish have been scared off. Can we go back? If you're interested in wieners I brought a footlong sausage.
Evelyn- <angry sigh then mumbles> Vienna sausage maybe.
Jonah- <in background lauging> What did you say?
Evelyn- <shrill> You heard me! Turn that off! You ruined my video! Jonah I said stop, turn it off. I'm mad at you!
Jonah- <laughing harder> Don't be mad! We can stay out and fish. We can stay out all day and fish until we've caught them all. I brought us hats and sunscreen. We can fish until tomorrow.
Evelyn- Turn it off! I don't want you to film me anymore! I don't want there to be evidence of what I'm about to do to you!
Jonah- <snickering> Ooooh sounds sexy!
Evelyn- <yelling> SHUT IT OFF!
<Jonah laughing so hard until he snorts>
<video abruptly stops>

Meat is meat: THE MAD BUTCHER (Guido Zurli,1971)
Some months ago, I reviewed a film called Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies, in which I asked readers “What’s in your pie?” This film, The Mad Butcher (Lo strangolatore di Vienna), asks a far more profound question: “What’s in your sausage?” In each case, a better pronoun might have been “who”. Guido Zurli was an Italian director but this film was made in English, set in Vienna and starred the wonderful,…

Can dogs eat Vienna sausages? The reasons and precautions For humans, it is a delicious Vienna sausage, whether boiled, baked, or stir-fried. But is it good for dogs? It is, therefore, not a good idea to feed Vienna sausages to dogs. I want to discuss why you should not provide Vienna sausages for dogs and what you need to keep in mind. What happens to a dog if it eats human Vienna sausages It is a Vienna sausage that is very tasty for humans. Some of you may eat it every morning for breakfast. In some cases, dogs may beg for a look when their owners swallow Vienna sausages. Vienna sausages are made to appeal to humans, so they contain substances that can harm dogs. Ingredients for Vienna sausages (varies slightly) (Pork, mutton, beef), binding material (starch, plant protein, mark protein), fish meat (tara), sugar (starch syrup, sugar), salt, skimmed milk powder, spices, seasonings (amino acids, etc.), smoke solution, collagen (nitrous acid), red No. 102, egg, dairy component, wheat, soybean. Accordingly, the following substances can cause disease in dogs: Additive-containing The phosphate salts Enhances meat's water retention and texture. It can become a kidney disease. Nitrite of sodium Color-producing material that prevents the color from fading over time. In meat, sodium nitrite binds to amines and becomes a carcinogenic nitrosamine. The colorants It may cause liver damage, eczema, urticaria, and anemia. In Vienna sausage, potassium sorbate (not listed here) is often used. A substance that prevents the development of fungi and mildew. Several concerns have been raised about the liver's burden. Are Vienna sausages harmful to dogs? Human Vienna sausages are exclusively made for humans and naturally contain a lot of salt. There is no comparison between the way people and dogs sweat. Dogs sweat very little, so that excessive salt doses will be excreted through urine. As a result, excessive salt can strain your dog's kidneys and cause illness. The following diseases can be caused by salt overdose: High blood pressure Cardiovascular disease Infections of the skin Symptoms of kidney disease There are about 1.9 grams of salt in 100 grams of Vienna sausages. Additionally, there is a low-salt type with about 1.06 g of salt per 100 g. Vienna sausages should not be given to humans. Dogs, however, need a minimum amount of salt as well. A guideline amount is 0.18 g for dogs weighing about 2 kg. Consuming too much salt is considered a bad thing. Don't give your dog human Vienna sausages. It has been discovered that a dog has eaten human Vienna sausages! As a consequence, a wide range of circumstances can be considered. The leftover Vienna sausages I ate before cleaning up after eating!" or "Something I was cutting on the cutting board fell off, and I ate it!" And so on. What are some ways to prevent your dog from eating human Vienna sausages? Can I do anything if I eat it? Optimal solution Keep Vienna sausages out of the dog's reach People should be trained not to eat from human plates Kitchens are not safe for dogs Frequently Asked Questions How to handle it if your canine consumes too much Vienna sausage In case your dog has eaten many Vienna sausages, make sure to visit a veterinary clinic. A small amount is not enough to make you vomit what you have eaten, but it is recommended to prevent recurrence in the future. Wiener sausages that eaten even by dogs Vienna sausages for dogs contain almost no salt. Reviewing the product label properly is crucial, as some contain additives. Vienna sausages have recently been made of natural materials, additive-free, coloring-free, and fragrance-free, so you can give them with confidence. Since it's for dogs, don't overfeed them and make them obese. Can dogs eat sausage? Deficient in thiamine (Vitamin B1), the sulfite preservative in sausages and cooked meats can kill you. Links are usually salty and fatty.
What occurs if a dog consumes sausage? A complete sausage is too oily and sodium-rich and could result in gastrointestinal discomforts, such as nausea or diarrhea. It can even cause pancreatitis, which could endanger your pup's life and affect its long-term dietary needs. Vienna sausages are good for hot dogs. Smoked Vienna Sausage 500g It contains no emulsifiers, fillers, or artificial additives. Spiced with fresh ground spices and lightly smoked over a wood fire. You can eat them as a tasty treat or lightly fry them for a tasty hotdog! Can dogs eat scrambled eggs? A dog should not be given raw eggs. Boil or cook eggs plain without oil, butter, salt, seasoning, or spices. It doesn't matter how eggs are cooked; your dog will love them. The short version What did you think? The use of human Vienna sausages in dogs is avoide It contains additives to make it tasty for humans. As a result, the dog's physical condition may be affected They stopped eating other food when I gave them Vienna sausages, which upset their nutritional balance! I often hear that. If you wish to give your dog Vienna sausages, we recommend a specially made one. Remember to check additives and manage calories as well.

9: Why Gatekeeping is Ok (#FufuChallenge Discourse)
African restaurants in the U.S., while not as popular as their foreign counterparts, are not far and few between in states such as a D.C., New York, and Georgia having large African communities. In recent weeks, videos of people trying variations of fufu and stew have popped up seemingly out of nowhere, unknowingly creating a “trend” called the #FufuChallenge. While some of the reactions were positive, many of these videos were quite the opposite, in which individuals with little to no home training had the absolute gall to record themselves treating the food as if it were 50 Shades of Grey – including but not limited to spitting, slapping, tossing, and other things that are considered incredibly disrespectful.
Now, fufu is native to West Africa and made from boiled and pounded cassava. Different countries have their versions of the same food, give or take a few ingredients - banku, eba, ga’at, ugali, mofongo, and cornmeal coucou (fungi, for my VI people). As disclaimer – I am an adventurous eater, and the first time I tried fufu, I was a fan. I don’t think it’s a food that’s hard to enjoy flavour-wise, but I can see how the texture may not be agreeable for everyone. Additionally, being from a culture that eats with their hands, there’s a lot of etiquette that’s instilled in at a young age– the most important being that food is not a toy. However, the recent videos have sparked a debate about Black acceptance between different members of the diaspora.
It is interesting how, during a time of inclusivity and unification within the Black community, it is taking no more than pounded root vegetable for most of you to show your ass. I don’t feel like now is the time to remind Black Americans that some of “common” foods would be considered abhorrent to others – chitlins and pickled pig feet, we’re looking at you. Everyone is losing their mind over pounded cassava, but the idea of eating soggy cornmeal – also known as grits – is a normal phenomenon. We can also bring snack foods into this - hot pickles in a bag, Vienna sausages - but the point of this conversation is not to sit here and bash culinary history, but to make the argument clear that every culture has foods that others would find less than palatable.
In the same breath that we want to come together, fight systemic oppression, and be on some fake Marcus Garvey shit, people are referring to African food as disgusting, garbage, and even “dog food”. But you want to go back to Africa, right? Find your roots?
Have you all lost your damn minds?
Black people exist everywhere, and that inherently means that the techniques and methods of cooking we use are prevalent in a lot of other cultures. If you don’t believe me, take the time to Google Korean fried chicken and the fact that the idea of frying chicken in batter was introduced by Black soldiers stationed abroad in the 1940s and 1950s, or how gumbo and jambalaya are variants of traditional African foods, created using recipes that date back to slavery. So, there’s a chance that there are other foods across various cultures – including Black American meals - that resemble traditional African cuisine. Why don’t you drag those on social media as well?
More likely than not, before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, this is probably the food that peoples’ ancestors were eating, and by reasonable conclusion, it’d be the food that OUR ancestors were eating. Additionally, there are so many other cultures with foods that can be turned into trend, so why was the Internet’s thought process to bully African people for no reason other than for laughs on social media? No, just traditional African food? Ok, noted.
Like ENNY said, please free my people from clout. PLEASE. I’m begging at this point.
And non-Black people have not escaped scrutiny either – so if you found yourself at a protest this year or have a cheeky little “BLM” in your bio, but you still found the time to degrade African culture on your timeline, I’m going to need you to go ahead and click backspace on your bio for me really quick, because the math is not math-ing. When it comes to other ethnic groups asking for parts of their culture to be respected and kept sacred, everyone wants to be quiet and listen, but when Black – specifically African people - ask for the same respect, people struggle to do so and are left with two options, or what they think are their only options – to, A, dismantle parts of Black culture to be co-opted and renamed to be acceptable to the white gaze or, B, label these things as disgusting and left at the mercy of Twitter think piece writers and Clubhouse podcasters who have nothing better to do than talk about things that they absolutely have no knowledge on.
Lastly, a LOT of foods from other cultures that are popular in the United States are not even authentic to that culture. To stand in front of a Taco Bell, or Panda Express, or Olive Garden and tell anyone that is your idea of eating “ethnic” food is not only a lie, but the curse of nationalism and Western closed-mindedness.
If you think our friends in Mexico are sitting down at their tables each night with a Crunch Wrap Supreme and Nacho Fries, you are highly mistaken, beloved.
But, with no empathy, authentic African culture has been co-opted as a sort of internet trend in which it’s acceptable to bash damn near an entire continent for food that takes immense labour and cultural knowledge to create successfully. And then, the people who posted their negative reviews actually had to sit, order the food, set it up, film themselves eating it, decide they didn’t like it, go back and edit the video – with their disrespect front and centre – and thought they could post it on the internet free of scrutiny. Like, we (as Americans) aren’t even eating traditional foods from other cultures to BEGIN with, so why was now the time to start, and why did you all start with African food?
Answer, and quickly.
There has always been tension within the Black community between Black Americans and the African diaspora, over feelings of perceived superiority and inferiority on both sides, and in all honesty, this is an argument I don’t subscribe to - at the end of the day, systemic racism does not care what flag you have in your bio, or how long you’ve lived in America – you’re Black, plain and simple.
But West Africans were not the first people who hopped on the internet and begged people to try their food, so the unwarranted opinions are more proof that maybe sometimes, it’s ok to gatekeep. And no one is begging for these reactions either or saying that you have to like it – if you’re not a fan, just nize it and maybe just…delete the video? Outside of the topic of respect also, the Internet is forever. So those of who you unabashedly are posting disrespect on the internet, think where this video will be circulating in a year or so.
Lastly, if you think Africans are blowing the response to the “fufu challenge” out of proportion, keep that same energy next time you see white women in box braids, rocking evil eye pendants, doing intricate henna on your timeline, or trying to lecture you about aligning your chakras, since it has now been established that disrespecting peoples’ culture is no more than acceptable social media discourse.
Be blessed!

My first 24 hours
So.... I made it. After 3 days, 3 planes and an hour and a half car ride, I made it to Zomba, Malawi for my 9 week internship. Holy cow. I had absolutely no expectations when I started my journey, and so far it has blown my mind. As I write this, I’m sitting on my porch looking out over a lush valley. I’m playing Hozier from my phone. Birds are singing and the occasional family of monkeys is wandering by. So how did I get here? Let me just review the last 24 hours for everyone.
I landed in Blantyre around noon yesterday (Saturday) and was picked up by a driver at the airport. He was so sweet and funny. He tried to teach me Chewa, although that was for nought. All I remember is that the second part of good morning sounds like branch. We talked about customs, dress, animals, and everything under the (very hot) sun. Unfortunately, I didn’t get his name, but I hope our paths cross again. Once I got to the office, one of the interns, Bongani, gave me a tour of the office and my living quarters. She drove me to a convenience store to get some food and snacks for the weekend since I wouldn’t see anyone else until Monday. I got beans, bread, some chicken, and margarine. They didn’t have peanut butter or jelly or any sandwich meats. Luckily, I brought quite a lot of snacks and vienna sausages from home (@ Jackie). Bongani also advised me to wait to buy more stuff until I could get to a market since everything was way over priced at the store.
Once we got back to the house, Bongani left me to unpack and rest. I couldn’t take a nap until I was completely unpacked since I’m neurotic. There’s more closet and storage room than my house back in Seattle, but I still managed to use a vast majority of it... I may have over packed. Whoops. I also wanted to spruce up the place so I stole a plant from the hallway. I may have to put it back eventually, but hopefully they won’t notice. Once I finally unpacked everything and felt satisfied, I laid down for a nap. As soon as I hoped into bed, one of the legs snapped off. I’m trying not to be offended by it. I was too exhausted to do anything about it, so I angled myself in order to put most of my weight on the remaining three legs and slept for five hours. When I woke up, it was 9:30 pm. I was still tired, but I didn’t want to wake up too early the next day so I started my reflection paper for class, and called my mom and friend, Jackie. I also texted my supervisor about the broken bed. I watched a couple of youtube videos and finally went to bed at 11:30.
I woke up this morning at 5:45 am. Much to my horror, I couldn’t go back to sleep so I played some games on my phone, listened to music and chilled (diagonally) in bed. I finally decided to get up at 6:30, took a quick shower, got dressed, and then made myself a delicious and nutritious breakfast of coffee, toast, and vienna sausages. I also treated myself to a kind bar while I finished my reflection. Quality. Just past 8, I left the house and walked until I found a church. I sat through the remainder of the service not understanding anything besides amen. They did do a version of Amazing Grace that I really got into. I ooo’d harmony. It was great. The choir took up multiple rows of pews and many of them were wearing matching skirts that had the logo of the church on them. They were really official and sounded so good. Some songs had choral-ography and everything. After service I walked home. While I did really enjoy being able to experience that service for myself, I’m hoping someone from the office will be willing to take to an english speaking service for the remainder of my time here.
Something that I knew I would experience, but it didn’t really hit me until I got here, was the fact that I would be a minority in Zomba. I thought that I would be used to it since I am used to being one of the only people of color in a room or conversation. In the US really anyone not visibly white is bunched into the same category. We find camaraderie in our experience as minorities. Because I grew up understanding blackness to include a vast amount of shapes, colors, and sizes, I learned to think of other black people as the same as me. Here, however, I am so obviously not the same. People stare, laugh, and honk at me. I really didn’t think it would be so obvious that I’m not from here. Call it ignorance, but I thought mixed race people would be a lot more common here than they are. Even lighter skinned black people are rare. I’m still processing it, and I’m sure I’ll have many more conversations with people about race, skin color, and the history of imperialism in Malawi, but facing it so explicitly today, and by myself, no less, has been really shocking. Something else that I didn’t expect was the huge gender divide that exists everywhere. Anytime you see a group of people, you either see a group of men and young boys, or women and young girls. There’s little to no intermingling unless it’s a short conversation, a family, or a young boy amongst a group of women or girls. Here, there’s a very obvious separation between gender. Even in church this morning, women sat on one side and men sat on the other.  I’m sure there will be many more conversations in the coming months about gender and cultural expectations in Malawi, but those have been my thoughts and observations so far.
There’s really no way that I can encapsulate my last day’s experience in one phrase, or even one post, but I think the best way to summarize it has been that everything is the same as the US, but really different.
Tiwonana,
This world traveler.

Virginia - December 2020
In the months leading up to November 2020, I had debated attending graduate school in the state of Wisconsin or Virginia. When it came down to the cost, it was the best decision to stay as an in-state resident for graduate school. I was accepted by George Williams College to start pursuing my Masters in Social Work in January 2021. With no clarity into my next opportunity for a trip out to Virginia I decided to go before starting school in the new year.
Saturday, December 5th
I woke up early and headed to Milwaukee for my flight to visit Jenna & Bradley in Virginia. I landed around 10AM. Bradley picked me up and had planned our first stop at a coffee shop, Cafe Amouri (https://www.caffeamouri.com/) in Vienna, Virginia. Bradley ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte and I ordered the Gingerbread Latte, both were incredible options. I would make sure to stop at this location again when in the area. I felt they did a great job managing ordering and contactless pickup during the COVID pandemic. Bradley and I caught up while Jenna completed her sleep after an overnight shift. When Jenna awoke we headed out for lunch and a full day ahead.
Tumblr media
I have a soft spot for Bartaco (https://bartaco.com/location/reston/) since it was one of my highlight restaurants the first time I came out to Virginia. If you know me well you know I am in a constant state of craving mexican food and elote corn. We ordered Guac, Street Corn and a variety of tacos. I decided I am not a fan of the Crispy Oyster Taco that Bradley is fond of, but I am down for the Glazed Pork Belly Taco any day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jenna drove us to Amphora Bakery (https://amphorabakery.com/) where we were able to see the treat artists at work in the back room. Bradley picked up some delicious decorative sugar cookies and I selected a magic bar. I decided that in the future the sugar cookies are most definitely the best way to go!
Tumblr media
In an attempt to stay local for the early afternoon we stopped for a wine flight at Fleetwood Farm Winery (https://fleetwoodfarmwinery.com/). Bradley and I enjoyed the variety as many of them were dry. Jenna passed up on several as she prefers the sweeter side of wine. Several other guest were ordering the pizza to pair with their wine, so that may be a good try for a future visit.
Tumblr media
As a tradition I requested that we snag up a treat from Mama's Apple Pie (https://www.momsapplepieco.com/)  in Leesburg, Virginia. I selected the Boston Cream which was good but nothing can compare the outstanding fruit pie varieties that are offered at each of their locations.
Tumblr media
Next we headed farther from home to Bluemont Winery (https://www.bluemontvineyard.com/) as Bradley had seen online they had a field of Christmas lights after sunset. Upon our arrival we found the venue overpacked for our comfort during the pandemic and it was cold enough we weren’t fond of sitting outside without heaters. We picked ourselves up and headed across the street to Henway Hard Cider (https://greatcountryfarms.com/henway-hard-cider/), a new location since I last visited. Upon arrival we witnessed a snowman on an island in their man made pond, as we neared the entry to the building we were able to chat with the chickens they house there. During our visit we enjoyed some cider, sliders and a cookie tray. It was an open building and great to check out for the first time. As the sun began to set we headed back over to Bluemont Vineyard where they had Christmas lights strung throughout the vines. It was stunning as we took the view from the bottom, driving on the curvy road to the top and got to look down on them as they spread over the hillside. Bradley made a great call in recommending we go out to see them. We had so much fun taking photos and videos, laughing at ourselves the entire time. Before heading out of town we stopped at Bluemont General Store (http://www.bluemontstore.com/) in which we were able to pick up some true molasses for our gingerbread cookies to come. We arrived home exhausted after a long day of travel and adventure, and went straight to bed.

Sunday, December 6th
Sunday was a monumental day, as Jenna woke up and cooked me breakfast all before 10. It consisted of Trader Joe’s hash browns, JUST eggs, Kite Hill chive dip and Wegmans Sausage. If any of you want a killer breakfast this is all the ingredients that you need!
Tumblr media
Our next stop of the day was the local farmer’s market, as ya know you’re girl cannot pass up a morning farmers market. We picked up Twin Oats (https://twinoats.com/) oat bites sampler pack. I do have to say my all-time favorite is the White Chocolate Cinnamon Roll, but the Vanilla is good too. Can I say that the owner of this sweet shop is so kind as well. Jenna was a familiar face but without hesitation she welcomed me in sharing all that she had to offer. If you have a local farmers market I encourage you to go, spend your money here, and socialize with others in your community. Let’s connect together as humans!
Tumblr media
We scooped up Bradley from home and headed to Eugene’s Sausage & Fries (https://eatateugenes.com/). I cannot rave enough about how accommodating the staff was with a dairy free, gluten free and egg free diet. Each member of the team was professional and took the allergens seriously. Please understand that a majority of locations we encountered throughout our trip did not take the time to double check their ingredients or consult with the chef to ensure that the allergens were not present within the food. I could write a stellar review about Eugene’s day after day for the great service they provided us during our visit. Our order consisted of Truffle Fries, El Diablo Sausage, Elote Fries, Southern Dog and my pitiful lamb blueberry infused sausage. I would highly recommend ordering the Truffle Fries at every visit with the parmesan on the side and the el diablo sausage. I would pass on the lamb sausage which is no longer listed on the menu, likely for good reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our following location was Aroma Wine Tasting Room (https://moraisvineyards.com/aroma-wine-tasting/) where we obtained flight trees and Jenna was in heaven with the opportunity to fill hers with almost all dessert wines. It was a quaint location with incredible staff, we spent much of the afternoon sipping our wine away. I must add too that the women’s restroom at this location is huge allowing you the opportunity to run in circles, which as expected Jenna could not pass up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cookies & Cream Ice Cream (https://www.cookiesandcreamshop.com/) was a phenomenal follow up location of choice for those of you who eat dairy, I would recommend passing on the sorbet. I ordered the Campfire S’mores ice cream and I can tell you it is worth the drive out to Haymarket! I would order it again and again for the rest of my days if I could.
Tumblr media
Bradley had other adventures to attend to, so Jenna and I went rogue for the rest of the evening. Starting out at Gray Ghost Winery (https://grayghostvineyards.com/) we completed a wine tasting at the counter allowing us the opportunity to hear the history of the grounds and story behind the name. We ended our visit by touring the wine cork gallery that has been set up for the holiday season. Jenna ended up purchasing a bottle of dessert wine and I took a sweet white home for us to share with our mother over the holiday season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Virginia there is this small little building that was placed on earth by God, called the Cheesecake Heaven Drive Thru (https://www.facebook.com/WarrentonCheesecake/) and by God is it good. I had the Original Cheesecake which was outstanding! I promise you, you won’t go wrong by picking out any one of these options. I truly suggest that you pick more than one, if you’re having a hard time deciding just be assured that the Lord only wants what is best for you and that may mean you have to pick out all your favorites.
YOU GUYS! I can not help but crack up each time I think of our experience at Bull Run Winery (https://www.wineryatbullrun.com/). As Jenna and I were walking in from the parking lot I was on the phone with our father. Jenna hops up the smallest curb and next thing I know she is on the ground, pauses a second on her back, rolls managing to get herself up in one swift motion all while picking up the contents that dumped out of her jacket pockets onto the concrete. Jenna starts halling ass up this huge hill to the entrance. I am laughing so hard I can’t speak to inform my concerned father of what occurred while at the same time I am out of breath trying to keep up with her. It is one of my favorite Jenna moments, and to this day I can’t help but laugh when the memory of this event crosses my mind. At the top of the hill as I confronted Jenna on the events that just occurred she acted as if no fall had occurred. Once I calmed my laughter we walked further into the ground of Bull Run to find a tent with heaters to drink under, a wine bar and outdoor live music. Jenna and I each grabbed a glass, found a location near a heater and it was then Jenna admitted to her fall for the first time. Jenna and I chatted and sipped on our wines while we listened to the horrific singing coming from the stage beside us.
We stopped at the Dolce Amore Peruvian Bakery (http://www.dolceamoresweets.com/) before picking up dinner and heading home. We ordered the Tres Leches, Mini Alfajor Box and a Caramel Horn. If you enjoy caramel and shortbread cookies the Mini Alfajor Box is a must have item. The employees were sweet in providing the correct pronunciation of the items after I asked for assistance. I would recommend making a stop here if you’re local.
Tumblr media
Jenna and I picked up Ford’s Fish Shack (https://fordsfishshack.com/locations/ashburn/) to-go before heading home to eat dinner with Bradley. I had requested crab legs before my visit to town so Jenna ensured they were on our order. Bradley and I both enjoyed Connecticut Style Lobster Rolls and fries while Jenna tried out the scallops. I have a sick obsession with their skinny fries at all Ford’s locations, which topped off my entire day. After we filled our stomachs and caught up on our daily adventure, we headed off to bed for another fun-filled day.
Tumblr media
Monday, December 7th
Our morning started off at Petite Loulou Creperie (https://www.lapetiteloulou.com/) in Purcellville, Virginia. Jenna ordered a Sugar Plum Mimosa with her Local Honey and Almond Crepe. Bradley ordered an oat milk latte with his Chicken Cordon Bleu Crêpe. I completed my order with the Prosciutto, Goat Cheese, & Fig Jam Crepe. If you know me any item with prosciutto, goat cheese and/or balsamic glaze is a must order item.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next spot on the way home was a coffee shop called Dolce & Ciabatta (https://dolceciabatta.com/) where I ordered my morning coffee and an eclair that I would come to love for the rest of eternity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jenna and I headed out in the afternoon to SideBar (https://www.sidebarlbg.com/eats) in Leesburg  to test out their happy hours for our first time. We spent hours this afternoon eating, drinking and chatting away. I have to say this is a memory that I will treasure, it was so good to visit with my sister one on one as grown adult women, an opportunity I don’t believe we truly ever had before. Jenna and I enjoyed the General Tso’s Cauliflower, Maple Sriracha Wings, SideBar Fries and Calamari. If you haven’t been to SideBar Happy Hour you’re truly missing out! GO NOW!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After our afternoon dining experience I forced Jenna to take me to all the local TJ Maxx locations. We explored around hitting up Nothing Bundt Cakes (https://www.nothingbundtcakes.com/) before heading home. I ordered the White Chocolate Raspberry, my all time favorite.
Prior to my arrival Bradley had planned several activities for us to enjoy in the evening one of which was building gingerbread houses and activities I had never participated in before. We had such a great time sitting around the coffee table as a family decorating our houses throughout the rest of night. I strove to one up them by adding a stained glass window in my house by using my phone’s flashlight and a half eaten gumdrop. Can you tell I am still impressed with my artistic abilities?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tuesday, December 8th
Again I forced Jenna to rise from her slumber and make me the very requested repeat breakfast from a few days prior. I am telling you, it is good! We headed out shortly thereafter for a wine tasting at Cooper’s Hawk (https://chwinery.com/). I enjoyed this opportunity as I had heard Jenna and Bradley rave about the wine and educational experience since moving out to Virginia.
As we were still full from breakfast we headed out to Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery (https://mtdefiance.com/). We were given the opportunity to order glasses of wine, due to the pandemic flights being unavailable. The cider pours were generous and tasted great. Bradley had a good cracking up session by himself at our table for still an unknown reason. We chatted here for sometime in this beautiful building before heading out. I did purchase a bottle of the Blueberry Cider and Jenna picked up some local mustard and jams they had for sale. We popped in and out of shops in Gainesville before heading to dinner.
Tumblr media
After much debate we enjoyed our dinner at Out of the Blue (https://www.outoftheblue.restaurant/). We enjoyed our shared order of calamari and shrimp. Bradley enjoyed his oysters. I was not a fan of the lobster roll bringing me to the realization I only appreciate a lobster roll if it is Connecticut style. Jenna ate scallops that we subpar for the pricing. We hit up another TJ Maxx on our way back toward home. After a dissatisfied dinner we snug a late night treat in at SideBar ordering some calamari that we shared together in the local parking garage. It was a simple but memorable experience together. I ordered some maple sriracha wings to dive into late at night since I was heading out of town the next day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon our arrival home Bradley got to work on the gingerbread cookies. As a family we spent the rest of the evening around the coffee table decorating and watching Christmas movies.
Tumblr media
Wednesday, December 9th
Once we rolled out of bed in the morning we enjoyed a simple breakfast with coffee at home. Around the noon hour Jenna made me homemade gluten free breaded pickles which were incredible. I ordered Pho-Nomenal (https://www.phonomenalashburn.com/menus) for lunch to arrive at the house. I ordered several types of Summer Rolls which came with an outstanding peanut sauce. We also ordered 4 Sisters Asian Snack Bar (https://www.foursisterssnackbar.com/) boba drinks as a last treat before I packed up my belongings and headed to the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the evening I landed safely back home in Chicago where I was greeted by my parents. Thank you Virginia for another amazing stay. I look forward to spending time outside at the wineries during a summer visit in the future.

almost employed!
okay! lots of stuff has happened. i accepted the job from berlitz, which is a full time teaching position in yokohama. i will be working 38 hours a week, including full days saturday and sunday. my schedule will not be finalized until after i receive my work visa and complete the initial training week.
ideally i’d be working a 9-5 m-f closer to zama, but hey! berlitz seems like a reputable company and i’m excited to meet coworkers and make money. also not worrying about the visa is nice.
i spent an hour in the berlitz tokyo headquarters yesterday filling out my paperwork to apply for a certificate of eigibility. once that is sent into immigration and processed (anywhere from 2 weeks up) i should get my certificate and be able to apply for the visa. that part sounds faster...my training is at the end of march, but i do not need a visa to take part in the training because it’s not paid (!).
so now i wait. i think now i need to start contacting friends of friends and signing up to volunteer so that i don’t go stir crazy. right now my week days where i don’t have anything scheduled entail me going to numerous grocery stores and trying not to buy too much.
today i walked an hour north to go to a halal african grocery store because they sell head and shoulders, which you can’t find in japanese stores. it was 1300¥! or $13. i talked the guy down to 1200¥ and bought it cuz i walked all the way there and i want to support his business i guess...he’s from bangladesh but has been here for 10 years. he says he likes japan cuz it’s not dangerous like bangladesh, for example they do not have terrorists. he suggested a language school i can attend in machida for me to learn japanese that i might hit up. after i went to that grocery store i hit up two more on my way back without buying things. i comparison price shopped. i’m also starting a log of my observations of each grocery store. thinking of starting a blog just aboj grocery stores but not sure what i’d include. plus i missed so many of the ones i went to in italy!
here’s what i comparison price shop and the ranges of prices i have found:
broccoli: 90-200¥ for one head (like one big floret, not lots of little ones)
spam: 550-700¥
eggs: 158-220¥
six slices of sandwich bread: 80-100¥
hot sauce: 200-500¥
canned tuna: 85¥ - 500¥
i also like to make note if they sell:
hot peppers
hamburger buns
sausage that doesn’t look like a giant vienna sausage
ground beef (very rare)
and lastly i like to check the variety, quality, and price of the prepared food, like tempura, sushi, doria, onigiri, bakery items.
here’s some grocery store pix
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
each store has a different check out method too. i’ve been to one store with self checkout that accepted credit cards, which was crazy! major selling point. most stores are cash only and regular person scans your stuff and you pay them. some are hybrid person/self check outs where the person scans and then directs you to a kiosk where you pay. the person will never bag your groceries for you. once the person scans the grocery they put it in a new basket and you take that basket to a counter where you bag with your own bag or a plastic one you bought. every store has at least one point card.
i feel like i’m becoming a grocery store expert and i only wish i knew what to do about it. photo journalism project of grocery stores around the world?
yesterday after berlitz and paperwork i took the train to tokyo’s korea town just north of shinjuku. i was looking for spicy food, cheese, and skincare products. korea town was PACKED. so many teenage girls. the skincare stores were teeming. i went into one well reviewed korean grocery store and couldn’t even move. i found the spicy ramen tho so i will have to come back at a better time...maybe cuz they’re in tokyo they open earlier than 10am. i want some spice.
i also learned that the korean products i want to buy (from cosrx) are online only so i will have to start a cart on amazon. life can be so difficult.
to get to korea town (actually called shin-okubu) i walked through the crazy part of shinjuku i hadn’t seen on my previous trip there. i saw that robot restaurant with big boob girls and robots that’s so popular. also saw a LOT of companion bars and love hotels. was definitely the most skeezed out and uncomfortable i’ve been since coming to japan.
i took one pix in korea town of don quijote but also some pix of a fancy mall i went to before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
other things that happened to me yesterday: a woman fell asleep on me on the train, which patrick told me was a rite of passage, and i saw a man take a cell phone call on the train. a first! the trains are dead silent. you don’t talk or make eye contact. maybe if you sit on someone you say “sumimasen” then you go somewhere far away at the other end of the train and try to disappear. high school me would have fit in really well here. i almost wish i hasn’t spent the past 10 years learning how to be a social member of american society.
my train conductor from shinjuku to zama yesterday was a real inspiration. she made me want to be a train conductor. she was probably 25-ish and just loved her job. her announcements were so professional and proud, unlike some lazy ass announcements i’ve heard. and she gave little train trading cards out to a little boy on the train (who was also impressive; he was probably 6 and taking the express train from tokyo to a suburb by himself after school, and semi politely asking the conductor for trading cards). but ya. she was so proud. i hope she didn’t get creeped out by my loving gaze the entire ride.
now i am sitting in the park by patrick’s apartment and plan to read here until five, when i’ll return to make beef curry. everyone is out in the park today but i was lucky enough to grab a big bench and everyone else is too reserved to sit with a gaijin. perks!
more random pix that don’t fit with narrative. first one is daikon growing in the park with old people playing tennis in background.

2018 - Year in Review
Tumblr media
Hot Mess Bitch à la Jan Bon - the most impressive dish I made (or participated in making) this year, on 31 Dec 2018. I guess now this space is for photos of what I did on NYE, following tradition of last year. It comprised of honeyed butter biscuit (baked from scratch!), sausage cream gravy, garlic polenta grits, cheesy scrambled eggs, topped with more uncased Italian sausage.
I was kinda procrastinating writing this post I guess because I was placing such unnecessarily high expectations on this post to be the motherlode of all reflections this year, especially since I have started keeping a handwritten (almost-daily) journal recently. Sorry bloggy, I hope you don’t feel jealous.
This year feels too short and too long at once. I almost cannot remember what I did for the first half of the year (partly also because my journal writing habit only started post-June when Janz handed me my first journal book and encouraged me to start writing in it so that I can remember and process stuff that happened in my life).
Maybe it feels long because I accidentally travelled a little too much this year (What blasphemy! Like too much is a thing when it comes to travelling?) But that was mostly thanks to the opportunity to do so from my work trips. Let me count the cities: Rome, Venice, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Brussels, Bruges, Krabi, NYC, Seattle, Vancouver, Melaka.
Oh yeah and I turned 30 this year too. It’s surprisingly uneventful, but I guess this year is when I started feeling more like an adult, less wet behind the ears and more okay with being myself. Especially since now at work I’m surrounded by so many young people, and it feels kinda weird that they seem to look up to me and come to me for advice.
New things I tried in 2018
Improv. I took an improv 101 class at the beginning of the year. It was good fun and pushed me out of my comfort zone to be less self-conscious and more spontaneous. I see some potential in using the concept of improv for the design process and I hope one day I can convince my colleagues to go check it out as well.
Piloxing. I wanted to make use of ActiveSG credits for the first time, and the idea of mixing pilates and kickboxing intrigued me. It was ok, pretty fun and not as intense as I expected. It’s kinda like a high-impact cardio exercise. Not my thing but I enjoyed it while it lasted.
Speaking at public events. I was invited as a speaker and panelist at General Assembly to talk about my experience as a designer. The first one was scary (and embarrassingly eventful). The next 2 as a panelist were more relaxed as I didn’t need to prepare that much. There is kind of an adrenaline kick doing this kind of thing sometimes, haha.
Journal writing. I have to thank Janz for encouraging this habit by giving me a notebook for my birthday. I think writing down thoughts and just things that happen in the day really helps me process stuff and is kinda therapeutic. I would write about conversations I had, things I observed, and maybe even stuff I watched.
PTTC aka Physical Touch Treatment Centre. This might sound a bit weird but in our Krabi UX teambonding trip, the girls were training me to be more touchy in showing sayang. That included patting heads and linking hands. And now I have become kinda good at it. (Okay.. this still sounds weird!)
Confessed to a boy. Rejected by said boy. But now we are good friends and I think I’m happy with that. And I think I’m pretty low maintenance and self-sufficient as a person/non-gf. This year I also concluded my online dating experiment and the result is the realisation that I don’t really need to find a partner to have a fulfilled life. Actually I already knew that from the start but this was a validation. But I’m grateful to have met so many guys from outside of my social bubble that I wouldn’t have met in otherwise. And the experience of meeting strangers also trained me to be more thick skin and be more socially confident. Glad I did this.
Things that made me sad in 2018
Colleagues that left. Early this year I was kinda shook when Michelle left. Even though we are not that close as friends, she and I had a good partnership as my researcher. Then Leonard, then Lydia, our dear POs. And then Gaofeng and Ernie left. My fellow Easy Team pioneers from the very beginning. :(
Macbook died. Itchy backside made me prematurely install Mojave OS before it was company-approved. My computer ended up getting corrupted and the IT guy tried so hard to help me save it for 2 whole weeks. In the end with all means tried, there was no choice to reformat the whole thing, and I lost all my files. That was an emotional 2 weeks.
SG team got booted off project. I found out after coming back from a trip and it hit me like a suddenly flying slap. But I don’t think it was anyone’s fault, just circumstances. And now I actually look forward to new challenges after this project comes to an end for me.
Chief Laihock’s passing. Chief was a great leader and strong pillar holding up GUI for the past 11 years, an inspiration to me and many people who know him. His passing was a sudden one and because of this keeping the kampung became a problem. I feel for the core team members who are working so hard to keep things running and continuing to fight this fight. Such passion is admirable and makes me want to do whatever I can to help.
Things I’m happy about in 2018
Read more books. Somehow managed to squeeze in more books into my reading diet this year. I’ve been gifted and lent many books this year and I guess because of that I was obliged to finish them, and that turned out to be a good thing. I also somehow unknowingly influenced some young’ins to start reading as a habit too, which surprised me.
Learnt to monkey bar. I had a random goal of learning how to monkey bar in September. I’ve never ever been able to do it, when I first saw other kids playing on it in pri sch and felt left out and embarrassed because I couldn’t. But this year I decided to see if I could train myself to do it, perhaps because the bar was always at the fitness station downstairs mocking me. And in November I showed it. That sense of jubilance and exhilaration I had when I finally made that first swing from one bar to the next was amazing. And in the next couple of weeks of training I finally made it through the entire ladder. Woohoo!
Strengthened bonding with colleagues. This year the UX team has expanded quite a bit. We welcomed in Janz, Lily, Oppa, Shirshir, Shishi, Lulu and Lala. And we got close almost instantly, which I think is unusual for team of such size. Boss has done an incredible job in scaling positive team culture somehow, and I think for next year our challenge is how to spread this culture beyond just our team.
Launched a fundraising campaign for GUI. The GUI web team’s work did not slack off since the launch of the 2.0 website last year. We did another release of 2.1 with some improvements after conducting some usability/feedback session with folks. And then in August when news of Laihock’s passing triggered the urgency to raise funds to keep GUI going and keep the land, we worked very hard meeting every week to come up with ideas on how to start a fundraising and awareness campaign. We pushed this campaign out in November and now to continue the efforts to tweak and optimise the message. Grateful to have a supportive volunteer team working hard together on this.
Didn’t take an MC this year. Last year I got sick quite often, almost once every 2 months. Then Gaofeng gave a suggestion that intrigued me. Exercise more. I decided to give it a try. And I’m proud to report that ever since I started exercising every alternate morning, my MC count this year has declined by 100%. I still got sick once or twice this year but it wasn’t so serious that I had to be bedridden. And I found going for a jog in the morning actually lifts my mood for the day. Two birds, bingo.
Knitted a hat. I joined our office’s Knit For Love group to learn how to knit a hat, and all knitted items would be donated to Singapore Cancer Society. I managed to finish mine in about 2-3 months after lots of getting stuck and having help. I was surprised that there are actually quite a few knitting enthusiasts in our office. And even to see a different side to those very notoriously fierce colleagues in the office - they were very kind and patient when it comes to teaching and guiding others. I love discovering new kinder sides of people.
Favourite things of 2018
Nonfiction Book - Crucial Conversations. Borrowed this from Lydia’s bookshelf. We even have a book review club at her house now to share our learnings. This book has valuable advice on how to handle tough conversations and I hope I could put it to proper practice and truly learn to do it.
Fiction Book - A Dog’s Purpose. A gift from Janz she got at Strand Bookstore. This was a surprisingly thought-provoking book despite the silliness of the premise. Best of all, it’s only USD 48 cents.
Podcast - Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. This one was recommended by Wei, a new friend I made from the DesignOps summit. Nothing can replace my love for Invisibilia but this one was another surprising gem. I like how they dissect and examine each chapter through lens of different themes and that made this beloved series even more meaningful.
Youtube Channel - Vox. I like the variety of smart educational and timely content presented in a visually appealing and simple to understand way. I especially liked their series explaining music and politics.
Music - Tessa Violet. Dodie. Chillhop radio. Pomplamoose.
Day memory - Cycling in Bruges with Eos. This was literally my idea of a perfect day come true. We had a cheap and cheerful breakfast at Hema, then rented a bike, and cycled all the way to Belgium in cool autumn weather, passing beautiful fields of flowers and farmlands and smelly cows. Had a sumptuous seafood lunch before heading back to town, serendipitously stumbling into an art gallery opening with free wine. Had a pigeon for dinner, then ending the day listening to jazz at a bar.
Trip memory - NYC/Seattle/Vancouver with Janz. I liked our adventurous/slipshod spirit and the resulting shenanigans we got into because of that. And all our silly and thoughtful conversations in between. And the food we got to try and coming up with a weird rating system for them.
Bonus - Making a Chinese rap music video with Jess. Jess and I bonded a lot during this 3-week Prague rotation trip. I liked practicing our rap every day walking to and from our office and hotel, and basically everywhere we go. She is such an easy person to have fun with, and we get a kick filming ourselves and annoying Leonard along the way (bless him).
Things to work on in 2019
Figure out how to be a leader. I recently got promoted to Design Ops Lead of the team. There will be a lot of dealing with people and processes, and that is something I have to learn how to manoeuvre. But having a new challenge is always exciting.
Being more articulate and assertive. Along with the above might mean learning how to better communicate expectations and handling tough situations.
Plan more and be less slipshod about things. There are times to be happy-go-lucky and be spontaneous about things. But wisdom is knowing when to pay attention and take care of the details, especially when the outcome might affect other people, not just myself.
Being more caring with my parents. Last year one of my resolutions was to improve my communication with my parents. I tried by listening to more chinese podcasts and speaking chinese more often. But I realised sometimes talking is not enough, it’s the tone and body language. How you show attention and care that matters.
Continue staying healthy. In the mind and the body. That means keeping and perhaps even increasing my regular exercise regime. And meditate more regularly!
So here’s what I did on the first day of 2019 – Taking a beautiful hike with my lovely buddies! It’s a gonna be happy new year, oh yes.

For the NYT Sunday Review: “What ‘White’ Food Meant to a First-Generation Kid” AD: Nathan Huang
I definitely related to this particular immigrant story, growing up in the Philippines and thinking nothing of eating Spam and Vienna sausages. When you’re on the outside of a culture, you only pick up what’s available to you through the media and in this case that was that being “American” was equal to fast and factory foods.
